Tuesday report

Hey, we’re back.
Thanks for the kind e-mails and phone calls of support.
But now it’s back to football.

* * *

• Kealoha Pilares today practiced at running back today in what is being regarded as a stop-gap move. He will become a hybrid receiver/runner when running back Daniel Libre is cleared to resume practicing. Libre has a high sprain in his right ankle.
• Aaron Kia was the No. 1 left tackle today in place of Laupepa Letuli (injured AC joint in left shoulder). Letuli said his shoulder has improved, although he is not certain if he will be available to play this weekend. He is considering not taking the MRI. Brysen Ginlack and Ketih AhSoon, last year’s starting left tackle, also worked out at that position.
• Calvin Roberts is the No. 1 right cornerback. Jameel Dowling started against Florida. Both are seniors with no redshirt years remaining. In the schemes involving five defensive backs, both will be the cornerbacks, with Ryan Mouton moving to nickelback.

Oh, great. The host comes back from his trip and now wants to show us trip pictures.

  18. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 6:57 am

AU’RYTE, Howzit Gang, was having withdrawals these past couple days…

Anyway, unfortunate for Libre and Pepa, I thought they both played very well against Florida. No worries though as Kia is a beast too and my boy Kealoha can handle running with LWJ. Heard big boy Jake Heun might be ready to go as well?

  19. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 6:59 am

    Howzit Aunty Ronnie…

Eh I was watching that Fresno St. – Rutgers game and had to catch myself going WTF was I thinking pulling for Fresno. I myself could not really do it…I mean happy they won but had to revert back to my hatred for them kitty cats, I mean dogs.

    Mahalos for the lifeboat…

  25. djmitcho September 2, 2008 7:14 am

Good Morning everyone! It’s good to be back on the WB. Mahalo to Liz for setting up the lifeboat and to those who helped keep it afloat. Welcome Back ST!

  26. Ronnie September 2, 2008 7:19 am

Pauoa Boy – I hear you! I cheered for the baseball team, but I just can’t for the football team. If not us, then Boise. (Of course, I’m REALLY glad I can cheer for Utah instead of BYwhoo).

  27. Blackie (ブラッキ) September 2, 2008 7:22 am

    Good morning everybody!

  28. monsterman September 2, 2008 7:25 am

A little birdie tells me that with Inoke being named the starter, the Warriors will be adding some new wrinkles to the offense. They will start fooling around with the Delaware wing-T. I’m not even sure what kind of offense that is. But with “wings”, I’m sure that it’ll fly.

Can anyone explain to me what a delaware wing – t is?

  29. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 7:26 am

Aunty Ronnie – did you just cuss at me…oye nevamind you said BYwhoo…haha 🙂

djmitcho – you ready for some fantasy football or what?

  30. IsleStyle September 2, 2008 7:27 am

Stephen — thanks for your support! I’m not part of the same Union, but as a member (former and otherwise) of a couple of other Unions in general, I understand the cause and, for what it’s worth, echoed your actions. I hope the HA Unions get what they are bargaining for.

Now excuse me while I get back to the “Hulk says Hawaii will smash Florida!” and “an opening day loss will set the tone for the rest of the season, no, there aren’t 12 more games” and “Practice Report — Alexander is real big and has great arm, I was there!” and the other typical threads of WSN.

  31. monsterman September 2, 2008 7:27 am

By the way, why would we be copying Delaware’s offense, are they even that good?

  32. jm2375 September 2, 2008 7:29 am

    Welcome back ST!

Have a good flight Liz! Thanks to you and everyone else for keeping the lifeboat afloat.

Have a great day everyone! Thought it was going to be a slow day at work, but things have just come up. See you laterz!

  33. July Jones September 2, 2008 7:29 am

LWJ is still running just like he did last year. Hesitating and not hitting the holes. We need Libre in there or to move Kealoha back. Also Bain is not the answer at one of the slots. Javonte Taylor #7 looks way more impressive.
I totally agree with the Funaki move as the starting QB

  34. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 7:32 am

monsterman – go to this website http://www.bucksweep.com has all the info you need on the Delaware Wing-T offense

    Here’s a little info for you…

The Delaware Wing T is more than a formation. It is a philosophy of attack based on the anticipation of certain adjustments forced upon the defense due to the position of the wingback. It is a four back running system that forces the secondary to play at least three deep, due to the presences of three deep receiving threats. Thus it is readily apparent that although the Delaware Wing T is a ground-oriented attack, it is equally dependent on an interrelated passing game.

Although the Wing T has undergone drastic changes during the past two and one-half decades to stay abreast of the increased defensive sophistication, the basic principles designed and developed by Dave Nelson and Tubby Raymond remain intact.

    1. The Wing T is designed for consistency, strength, and is ball control oriented.
    2. The formations are characterized by a wingback so there is the threat of at least three deep receivers.
    3. The quarterback threatens the flank either with action or away from it on every play providing either an additional threat to the attack flank or misdirection threatening the flank away from flow.
    4. All three backs are close enough to the formation so that they may be used as blockers, ball-carriers or for deception.
    5. The offense is designed in complete backfield series, each of which presents multiple threats to the defense on each play.
    6. It has a balance of passing which is predominantly play action in nature.
    7. The spread of receivers is accomplished by ends and is made to accommodate the running game and not as a mechanism to enhance the passing game.

    Hope that helps…

  35. monsterman September 2, 2008 7:35 am

I saw Delaware play last year when Flacco was the quarterback. That doesn’t sound like the same offense that I saw on TV.

  36. Pomai September 2, 2008 7:35 am

    Welcome back ST

  37. Pomai September 2, 2008 7:36 am

Kekoa mahalo for the posters, wen give some away already.

  38. monsterman September 2, 2008 7:37 am

Everyone needs to please keep it quiet that we will be installing the Wing-T offense. I was told by someone who is good firends with one the coaches that they want to keep it a secret. So please keep it quiet.

  39. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 7:38 am

July Jones – Nah LWJ looked auryte against Florida, he’ll be good. Libre is a change of pace scat-back so more exciting to watch. Kealoha is the man and he should be starting at one of the slots soon…but yes, Coach Mack will move him back to RB for the Weber St. game. Heard big Jake Heun might be back too. I agree that Jovonte Taylor is better than Bain, or at least showed more in the Florida game. He’s a really good KR/PR too. He seems a lot quicker than Bain and better hands as the WR’s kept dropping numerous passes. In any case, FUNAKI is #1 chee huu!!!

  40. Stretch September 2, 2008 7:40 am

    OSU Game Ticket

We are looking for one ticket for a Tsaiko to attend the game. Does anyone have an extra?? Please email be at stretch6592 at yahoo. Mahalo

  41. monsterman September 2, 2008 7:41 am

I think that we would be better off running the offense that Paul Johnson runs, as a change up to the run and shoot. As a matter of fact you can still run the run and shoot out of the so called spread offense that Paul Johnson runs. I bet Inoke would be great running that offense.

  42. Frank September 2, 2008 7:43 am

Hey there everyone, just wanted to hello from Fort Hood Texas.Glad to see the blog network is up and running.I got to watch some of the football game the other day.Going thru our training here in preparation for Kuwait and Iraq.Really miss my wife (rob25) Hi sweetheart miss you and love you lots!!!! ALOHA

  43. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 7:43 am

monsterman – who cares about keeping secrets, no matter each team has enough film, etc… to know what’s going on. Besides I think a team would catch on to that type of formation anyway and I doubt we will use the wing-t much anyway even if it was installed. Also, it don’t matter if the other team knows your offense, it depends on how you execute it. Everyone knows Hawaii will throw but still can’t stop us, go figure…

  44. monsterman September 2, 2008 7:46 am

I’m just saying Pauoa Boy that the coaches want it to be a secret, so we should honor their request.

  45. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 7:46 am

    Howzit Uncle Frank,

Take care over there in the sandbox, I’ll be there soon as well…

  54. Ronnie September 2, 2008 8:00 am

    And we’ll be good in Fresno… I promise 😉

  55. expat September 2, 2008 8:01 am

Glad to see the blog back. That was a pretty painful game to watch at times. It was a great week otherwise for the WAC though. I watched a bit of the Boise State game. Their frosh QB looked pretty good. He could be a thorn in our side for years to come.

I was pretty impressed overall by how the guys played in Florida. Sure, they got whomped, but they didn’t looked outclassed the same way they did in New Orleans. They were totally composed in the first quarter. No surprise the big problem was between the QBs an receivers. Given all the new blood you had to figure that would be the case.

My big disappointment was the special teams play, which just wasn’t very good (besides DK who looked great). Remember back when special teams were a strength of the team? When guys like Matt Harding looked like they were going to block every single kick? Man, we really need to get back to that kind of special teams intensity.

I was glad Inoke got a shot but I could see why the coaches had him third. He is a great improvisor and has great mobility… but what you want is a guy who can get in there and run the offense and get things into a rhythm, and I am not sure that he is the guy for that. I really think Tyler is going to get the majority of the snaps this season for that reason. I wish Inoke all the best though and hope he proves me wrong.

  56. LizKauai (iPhone) September 2, 2008 8:02 am

plane had a technical (replace boards) and we are still on the ground.

  57. Dennis Halloran September 2, 2008 8:04 am

    Welcome back you all.
Nobody talked about the inordinate amount of dropped passes in the swamp,
First game jitters or a drop off in skill positions?
Boy did Kevin Craft look like Colt in the second half last nite for UCLA
    Mater Dei on TV manana!

  58. Stretch September 2, 2008 8:06 am

During the Na Koa lunch yesterday, Mack mentioned that they used brand new balls for the game and they were not able to “rub them down”.

  59. Thomas Mui September 2, 2008 8:06 am

    The Mothership is back!!!

Hope all is well from you and all the Tsaikos are well, back, making most of their Mainland jaunts or staying healthy there!

    Aloha one and all.

  60. Thomas Mui September 2, 2008 8:14 am

PauoaBoy: Now, if Inoke could only kick the ball, he would be a natural if we used the single-wing!

SteveM and LIZ: thanks for maintaining the tender from ship to shore! And hope you get back safely Liz.

  61. LizKauai (iPhone) September 2, 2008 8:15 am

ok. We have had to deplane for at least an hour while repairs tale place. Tsai.

  63. Stretch September 2, 2008 8:17 am

Liz – go play the slot machines in the terminal, maybe you can win the jackpot!!

  64. Garret September 2, 2008 8:18 am

    Welcome back ST!

Thank you for the updates in your blog entry above. Hopefully we’ll get to see the wrinkles with Pilares and Kia sometime soon–I can guess at what they would be, especially given their skill sets and past/present positions, but I won’t. Hopefully Letuli and Libre will be back fully healthy soon and don’t rush back too soon, as making their injuries worse could keep them out even longer.

Libre sure is tough to play through his injury. However, the team needs him back healthy, which is probably why the trainers are bringing him back slower than he would like.

  65. Garret September 2, 2008 8:20 am

Florida is getting back 3 of its starters for Saturday’s game vs. Miami. I expect them to crush Miami after watching them against UH!

Gator head coach Urban Meyer said Monday that wide receiver Percy Harvin, linebacker Brandon Spikes and offensive lineman Jim Tartt should play this weekend.

  66. Garret September 2, 2008 8:22 am

This was on the lifeboat, but I figure I should post it here also since some people might not have seen it.

The Sacramento Bee made 8 predictions for the NFL season. I liked this one!

For fantasy players, this year’s Ryan Grant will be former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan, the Redskins’ starter by midseason.

  67. Garret September 2, 2008 8:23 am

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer writer is a HUGE fan of Colt’s.

Colt Brennan is a Redskin. This causes me great pain. For quite a while, I have not rooted for my hometown Washington Redskins, because of long-standing ownership issues. Even when Joe Gibbs returned, I did not root for the Redskins, because of long-standing ownership issues. And now, with my main man Colt Brennan on the roster, I still cannot root for the Redskins, because of long-standing ownership issues.

But I’m going to do a one-time favor for my erstwhile favorite franchise:

    Play Colt Brennan.

As many of you know, I’ve touted this kid since he was knee-high to a sea turtle. I told America he was Heisman-worthy. Then he had one bad game, in the Sugar Bowl, and everyone was ready to consign both of us to a cruise-ship karaoke bar.

Jason Campbell? Nice guy, good player. Colt Brennan? A once-in-a-lifetime island volcano waiting to erupt. So take the clipboard out of his hand and rest your hopes on his golden arm.

  68. LizKauai (iPhone) September 2, 2008 8:24 am

    tale=take
I am literally on the floor now, gptta moemoe.

  69. da princess' classmate September 2, 2008 8:26 am

personally didn’t think da special teams was dat bad. Kelly is money on field goals and look at his kickoffs compared to da florida guy. that’s pretty good to be able to kick it that deep in that humidity. i don’t think need worry about defending the punt return. brandon james is by far da #1 punt returner in da country. da bounce just took it so he got it in the middle of the field. we did get two guyz pinned near da sidelines on that one, but that’s correctable. loved j. taylor and mounton on kick returns, no worry we’ll be fine.

  70. Frank September 2, 2008 8:27 am

Hey there Tsaikos, just so everyone knows the time on my post is 5 hrs ahead…ALOHA

  71. Garret September 2, 2008 8:30 am

David Veikune got a nice mention in this article on DEs that the NFL might be interested in next year’s draft.

JUCO transfer David Veikune made a major splash in his first season for the U. of Hawaii and could well become a major force as a senior.

  72. Garret September 2, 2008 8:32 am

Aloha Frank! Best wishes to you and the men you are leading!

  73. Garret September 2, 2008 8:35 am

UCF really messed up their teleconference this week with their coach and the media! I wonder how Hawaii reporters would have handled this…I’m sure that ST would have posted something quite funny about it on the blog.

UCF’s teleconference with Coach George O’Leary was canceled today and because school officials accidentally gave the number for a phone sex line instead of the teleconference number.

When I dialed in, the voice on the other line said, “Hi sexy, you’ve reached the one-on-one fantasy line.” I gasped, hung up and figured I must have dialed the wrong number. So, I checked the UCF news release and dialed again, but I got the same phone sex hotline complete with offers I can’t really post on this blog.

It turns out Leigh Torbin, UCF’s new director of athletic communications, accidentally listed one digit incorrectly when he released the teleconference information and sent the media on an amusing detour.

  74. SteveM September 2, 2008 8:42 am

I almost fell off da gang plank coming back to shore ST! DPK was rocking the life boat the entire time. Go back and check the ship’s log at the number of complaints…Can we leave him with a sitter next time? (Sweetie, can we have a little help here?)

Good to have you back in charge of things. Liz/SteveM/Homey/Tsaiko Crew did a swell job of keeping us informed. Is it possible for Liz to be nominated for a Pulitzer or an “atta-girl” award?

I’m sure they’ll all be happy to see your appreciation applied to their pay envelopes whenever the new bi-weekly pay system begins.

  79. LizKauai (iPhone) September 2, 2008 8:58 am

  85. Koauka September 2, 2008 9:08 am

    Liz:

Colt was talking to Devon Bess and said that Inoke is a pretty calm guy and if he started against the Gators, without blinking and eye, #11 would have thrown for five touchdowns.

    Hmmm, very interesting outlook.

  86. Kekoa September 2, 2008 9:08 am

Shout out to Frank (Rob25’s hubby) checking in from TX. Was a pleasant surprise to see your post this AM, keep it up. Way to represent!

so what now HA not letting us post comments

Bulla sounded goooood ok da am

Safe return home to all who still on da continent

  88. SteveM September 2, 2008 9:30 am

Thank you everyone, but I deserve very little credit for the Tsai-ko sized WarriorBoat “lifeboat” of this past week. All I did was a little maintenance and monitoring– major credit goes to LizKauai for the content and continuity and to homey for the lifeboat re-fit and live moderation.

Surprisingly, the “lifeboat” was a very speedy and durable mini-cruise ship. Hopefully we will not need it again, but if so, we gotta talk to Stretch about chartering a larger one with bowling alley. 🙂

  89. MeiLing September 2, 2008 9:34 am

    Aloha, Aloha, Alohazzzz!

Glad to see you back, ST.

Can’t stay long… back to da house stuff….

    Esme & out!

  90. da princess' classmate September 2, 2008 9:34 am

da north shore gone be a ghost town saturday nite, kina like texas high school football when the whole town closes down to go watch da local game. gotta be a nice feeling having their native son finally be named starter. wonder if the offense gets introductions before game time, inoke would get a HUGE ovation.

  91. Kekoa (Survivor-WB) September 2, 2008 9:41 am

It felt good to hear such a ringing endorsement from CB about Inoke. All of our QB’s need our support to continue working hard. Let’s all stay as positive as we can about them and the receivers as they find their comfort zone.

  92. Lisa September 2, 2008 9:46 am

I haven’t commented before, but wanted to say welcome back!! =) Definitely missed your football updates

  93. Addahknowsports© September 2, 2008 9:55 am

    SteveM-

You’re being very modest. You were a fantastic cruise director. Captain Stubing would be proud to have you on his ship.

    And Homes-

I’m not sure what kind of magic you pulled, but thank you!

  94. FloridaTed September 2, 2008 10:11 am

Yeah, the Mayor of Tsaiko-Town is back!!

    Welcome back, Tsai-Meister.

A huge round of applause to our very own LizK, whom I hereby nominate as Vice Mayor. I also nominate SteveM and homey for Town Council. Thank you for your Life Boat work and keeping this Band of Brothers and Sisters together during trying times.

Nevertheless, it’s good to be back on the Mothership.

Tsai-Meister, what is your overall assessment of the team right now?

I think Funaki is the best joice to start right now and then we’ll go from there. The team will be fine.

  95. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 10:11 am

    Good morning gang…

Whew!!! Good to finally be back on-board the mother ship.

A Big Shout Out to Frank. Thanks for all you and your boys do for us. And that goes to all the rest of the Tsaikos who are serving or have served. You guys give up a lot for the rest of the country. Just know that we all appreciate it every day, even though some people may not, the majority do. Just come home safely and bring your boys home safe as well. Like A-joe and many others have said, the Tsaikos will take care of Rob25 so don’t worry and anytime you want to talk or post or find out stuff, someone will be standing their post on this site.

Thanks to all who attended the Genjis TV gate. Although it wasn’t the outcome we wanted, we did see lots of positives in that game and a few things we need some work on. However, we maintained the friendships and bonds between the Tsaikos. We win together. We lose together. and we always stick together…no matter what. Stay tuned for information on the next TV Gate for the OSU game.

And to all those first timers who came out to the TV Gate (i.e. Rabidfanman, Protector, Lopaka43, KelliM and family, and so on) don’t be shy. Now that you’ve been to a Tsaiko event, come out and enjoy the other things we do, like this weeks tailgate…

That goes the same for all the other lurkers…come out and enjoy..we don’t bite, well maybe DPK does…MWAHAHAHHAHAHAAHA

  96. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 10:16 am

A big mahalo to Liz K, Steve M., and Homey for keeping da lifeboat afloat….without them, I would have drowned….just like in da song Fate Yanagi, I would have been screaming…”Eh, Stephen Tsai, I luuuuuuuuuuuuububbbbbbbbbbbbbb uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu” while I was drowning at a glassy, 90 feet, Point Panics….MWAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA

  97. Rob25 September 2, 2008 10:29 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

See you got Frank to come out of his shell!

    Love you too Frank!

Thanks again to LizK, SteveM, and homey for keeping our sanity together for a week, I can’t even imagine how my email box would have looked like!

Ronnie – Wow you were first!

Stephen – Good to be back where we all belong!

    re: special teams
At Na Koa Coach Mack said aside from the PR for TD he was OK with the job that Ikaika Malloe has done. (The ball landed in the right spot but bounced inside the hash; hey, it’s an odd-shaped ball)
Felt like KOR’s were close to breaking one.
    Ice Man was solid.

  107. d1島 September 2, 2008 10:50 am

Anyone going to Call the Coach at Willows this evening?? What time does it start anyway?? 6??

  109. Kazz September 2, 2008 10:58 am

    NEO,

I know this is OLD news already, but the Rainbowtique at Ward JUST got their UA jerseys but someone told me they do NOT have #11, just 6, 17, and 44.

Pauoa Boy I got ur message, and as I mentioned above I have to see if they have your size and I need to make sure if they have #11 or not. If not, I have to get onto campus this weekend.

  110. al September 2, 2008 10:59 am

    aloha frank!

although i have never met you (i think) i just wanted to say that what you and all the marines do is so special. i spent 15 years at mcbh and i truly learned to appreciate our marines and all that they do.

perhaps i may have met you once before. one day we shall talk story eh?

    semper fidelis!

  111. protector September 2, 2008 11:00 am

It was my privilege to meet some of you at Club Genji regardless of the outcome of the game. I’ve said enough about my dismay about Coach not pulling Greg sooner. The overall D did a great job containing Tebow as well as they did. I’m disappointed they didn’t get any picks. They should’ve had a fumble recovery, but Tebow has a charmed life because he fell, but was close enough to reach out & recover the ball with his right arm-dog luck! I challenge any team to do better than holding him to 1 passing TD & less than 150 yds? Take away the 2 INTs for TDs that Greg & Brent “gifted” to the Gators + other TDs Inoke WOULD’VE made & the game score would’ve been better. I know–would’ve, should’ve. A big blow may be losing Libre; he showed some moxie out there-hope he’s back for OSU. Don’t want to look past Weber State, though. It should be great practice for the D, looking to shut down their high-powered game. I’m still waiting for my season ticket to arrive, though (it sucks as this is the 3rd time in 4 years this has happened). Go Warriors! Beat Weber State!

  112. Bulla September 2, 2008 11:00 am

    aloha frank

mahalo for all you do! next time back, gotta hit another KK and we’ll give you the mic this time, although we’ll have to snatch it away from James ‘Ventura Pileup’ Go….haha

Bulla – I don’t think that we can get the mic away from James…unless he falls asleep again. Frank’s too busy dancing anyways.

  115. Bulla September 2, 2008 11:16 am

    Rob25

first we have to locate james; when he is hiding below the equator line, but still singing….that poses a challenge for the rest of us. he is living proof of if can can, if no can, still can…..what a great entertainer! haha

  116. Kazz September 2, 2008 11:18 am

Dan Kelly was freaky-good. Both kickoffs landing in the endzone we INSANE!!!

No doubt he’s getting into NFL shape with that leg.

Service teams could be worse… I mean did anyone see Rutgers in action against the Fresno State Puppies?

The Warriors are blessed to have you guys as part of their family.

  123. J-Dog September 2, 2008 11:41 am

Saw the Under Armour UH jerseys. Quality doesn’t look to good being that it’s more pricey than last years’ Nike ones. Ward Rainbowtique had numbers 6, 17, 44. Heard they may be bringing in additional numbers depending on how well these sell.

Sports Authority has some UH UA stuff, but the new Nike UH logo stuff being sold outside of UH looks way better IMO. UA needs to step it up. Heck, they don’t even sell UH stuff on the UA website yet.

  124. conor September 2, 2008 11:43 am

    soldout!

  131. Kazz September 2, 2008 12:11 pm

    UA Jerseys:

They are about 5.00 more than the Nike ones last season. If anything they are just as “thin” and when washing them it’s best to do so gently by hand as the #s will start to peel off after a few spins in the machine.

The difference with the UA jerseys is that there are side panels on the body as the Nike ones are all mesh all the way around.

As for the Rainbowtique, I was told in the beginning that first the Bookstore gets their allotment, then they stock the Rainbowtique locations next with SSC first and then Ward, but I guess considering the confusion of when they will be available and who has them etc… I guess they didn’t follow that route.

But yes they are indeed at the Ward location… No #11 there tho. Maybe some #11s at the bookstore at Manoa tho.

J-Dog, there are better UA UH merch at the bookstore including a zip-up hoodie I want but at 80.00 I’m gonna pass for now, plus more hats and polos I didn’t see outside of the bookstore. Apparently the Rainbowtique has only so much space and soon enough those items will be available at Ward soon.

There is a lot of trash on the internet, most notably the refuse that is linked with stories on the Advertiser’s front page in which they allow people to post their comments. I am never surprised at the kind of ignorant rubbish that is posted there and in some other message boards.

Either way, I guess some people lost money this weekend. Oh well too bad.

  136. Maverick September 2, 2008 12:29 pm

    Kazz,

    Spot on

Nobody want’s to be known as the “Lady Boys”

btw, I still get maka pia pia trying to adjust to the new look.

    Eh, JackFlash-

No forget tell braddah bring the Tsai-ko “Salad Bowl” turn “Poke Bowl” fully loaded to the T-gate, K?

    Bwahahahahaaa!!!

  138. Kazz September 2, 2008 12:39 pm

I saw a poll on the sports hawaii site asking people what they thought about the new road uniforms and I personally LOVE them, only thing tho…

Why do they seem SO LONG at the bottom?

I think Ryan Mouton’s was ripped as a Florida player grabbed it and tore off a strip of it.

I know auuthentic uniforms are longer but they players usually just fold them up (as most do not “tuck” them in their pants), but maybe it’s just because they are new I guess?

  139. Rob25 September 2, 2008 12:41 pm

I don’t know what I am going to bring to the tailgate…any ideas…anyone

  140. CJS1 September 2, 2008 12:43 pm

Let’s put the blame where the blame really belongs. The first person responsible for the florida meltdown and spanking the UH took is Nick Rolovich. Rolovich is the racist loser who persuaded Mack and Lee to allow Alexander and Rausch to be the first and second QBs, this despite the fact Funaki is the overall better athlete among the three and the fact Funaki offers more in the way of desire to win and a no quit attitude.

The second person to blame for this F up is Fat Mac. For a guy earning more than $1.2 million per year in taxpayer dollars, he was not very bright in following the advice of a loser like Rolo. Rolo has issues with the local guys. Rolo was beat out by Chang and this has made Rolo a very sour man.

The final person to blame for this F up is Ron Lee. Lee played a key role in selecting Alexander and Rausch to be the first and second QBs. Lee has demonstrated by his decision making in this situation that he is not fit to advance any further on the coaching ladder.

  141. Rob25 September 2, 2008 12:43 pm

Kazz – I like the new ones much better. They look sleek and I would think that they feel even better.

  142. Koauka September 2, 2008 12:52 pm

    wow! a great mind

  143. Jack Flash September 2, 2008 12:52 pm

A-Joe- unfortunately, Checkraze will be on the mainland for this first game, so the Tsaiko Poke Bowl won’t make an appearance til 9/27 vs SJSU. I’ll tell him he owes us a double order!

  146. Koauka September 2, 2008 12:56 pm

#140 needs to be SMU’d. must have lost $$$$$

  147. Kazz September 2, 2008 12:59 pm

    CJS1,

    YOUR opinion is noted. 🙄

  148. Rob25 September 2, 2008 12:59 pm

CJS1 – There is no room for inflammatory remarks like you made. You can have your opinion, but the name-calling shows a lack of respect for people in general and does nothing to correct any problems that you see.

  149. Kazz September 2, 2008 1:02 pm

Anyone ever used a bug bomb before?

It’s funny to throw one of those things in and watch all the roaches come out of the cracks running to try to get away from it.

I compare this to what has happened since the Florida game.

All the ROACHES come out of hiding and all of a sudden they have something to say, no matter how ignorant it is.

  150. da princess' classmate September 2, 2008 1:03 pm

And The Beat Goes On….Duh duh doe, duh doe, dah dah dah dah !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pulling for Funaki……The guy makes plays and is a class act no matter how strong is arm is!!!

Some would say he was in against 2nd and 3rd stringers….If you think about it those 2nd and 3rds could probably start in the WAC. Florida is the real deal. BCS top 10 every year. Go warriors!

  154. Rich2176 September 2, 2008 1:09 pm

Kazz – When I saw the line at 35 or 36 or whatever, I would have put down serious cash on that knowing that the “D” would be great. But we all know the offense and special teams gave them 21 points. Anyway, a good game (okay, 1/2 game) and I don’t think there is any point in anyone pointing fingers. Win as a Team and Lose as a Team.

Great to finally be back “home” on the mothership. It’s nice to see everyone again.

  155. Kazz September 2, 2008 1:10 pm

  169. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 1:28 pm

    Ronnie…that sounds good…mmmmmmmmmm

CJS1 – thanks for sharing your views.

Too many bandwagon fans. I’ve already heard people talking about this season being lost, we have no QB, the “I knew we weren’t going to be good” types. I just remind them that the season is 13 games long. We have 12 more to go. And anyone remember the first game of 1999 where we lost to USC 63-7 with Rolo and Timmy the QBs in that game…we ended up at 9-4 that year…..no bowl because the Hawaii Bowl wasn’t around…

  170. Kazz September 2, 2008 1:30 pm

    Rob25,

BTW, were you at the UCLA match on Sunday?

I thought I saw you there but I was at a distance so I wasn’t sure.

What a helluva a match!!! Kanani Herring is THE REAL DEAL!!!

Also MUCH MAHALO to the ladies of Penn State for joining in on the Hawaii Five O “ROW” that the student section does. That really got the crowd going sending us into extra play on game #4.

  171. Rob25 September 2, 2008 1:30 pm

    Hi ST!

I heard that Libre left the practice field on crutches. Is he going to be sidelined longer than one game?

  172. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 1:30 pm

ST…had a good week off??? MWAHAHAHAHHAHA

  173. Kazz September 2, 2008 1:33 pm

    Liz,

You are awesome for getting that clip of the new Ha’a on there!!!

Gotta start practicing ya know… 😆

  174. NEO September 2, 2008 1:33 pm

    Comments to poster #140…

Believe what you will, but you, nor I are down there, on the field, making the calls… Where was your name when the coaches position opened up? Did you apply? Apparent to me that you can do a better job at coaching, so why not do it. It’s easy for us to sit here and criticize all we want, but harder to say “hey, we lost, but there’s still hope there…” Anyway brother, just thought I’d say… Appreciate the “fresh” perspective though…

    NEO

  175. Loa September 2, 2008 1:34 pm

PB – your welcome, glad it worked, ok gang 10-7 for me, cu bumbai, laterz

  176. Rob25 September 2, 2008 1:35 pm

Kazz – That was me…I think. I was sitting in AA in the lower bowl.

Kanani is definitely the real thing! She may end up being Freshman of the Year! I’m impressed with her all around game. Jamie Houston better look behind her because Kanani has more to bring to the table than just kills.

It was fun watching the Penn girls “paddling.” They did it a couple of times and at first I thought they were kind of mocking it, then the second time some UH kids gave them ti leaves and the last time pretty much the whole team was in there doing it. That’s what make college sports so much fun.

  177. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 1:35 pm

    Howzit Aunty Rob25…

You going Fresno St. game right? Might have to keep me and Aunty Ronnie in restraints before we Jus Buckaloose at the game 🙂

  178. Kazz September 2, 2008 1:36 pm

    James,

Eh, no need remind anyone. If they don’t feel it after the seasons we’ve had recently then they never will get it.

They say this season is lost, well then they are lost causes and I feel sorry for them as they obviously have NO pride in HAWAII’S TEAM.

Yeah da boys lost 56-10, but for those “fans” that cannot even hold their head up and move on, THEY are the BIGGEST LOSERS!!!

  179. Kazz September 2, 2008 1:39 pm

    NEO,

Did you see my message earlier?

I know Kelli mentioned a while back that you were asking about the UA jerseys and I replied they might not be available until after this weeks game.

Well, sure enough, a few days went by since that and the bookstore was the first place to have them and now the Ward Rainbowtique apparently has them now too.

    Only 6, 17, and 44 available.

My brother surprised me last week and picked me up a #11 one from Manoa while he was there visiting some friends. They’re 65.00.

  180. da princess' classmate September 2, 2008 1:40 pm

that team that lost to ‘sc 63-7 looked much much worse than this year’s team, plus this florida team’s a lot better than that ‘sc bunch. if we never had ulbrich that game, shudder to even think about it. dr. dan, still in my top 2 HI qb’s of all time w/ CB.

btw, how did kanani herring look against da trees of PSU. does the hype match the talent. pretty kewl of PSU to join us in da cheers like dat, would’ve been a trip to see.

  181. Ronnie September 2, 2008 1:40 pm

Pauoa Boy… Aunty Rob25 is going to be sitting with us. We’ll need to find someone else to keep the three of us in line 😈

  182. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 1:41 pm

Loa – yups buggah work…nice to hear bruddah Colt mention about Inoke Funaki. He was thinking the same stuffs I was…hmmm…maybe he is my real brother haha. Nah, but from day 1 Inoke has been my #1 and I’m glad he has his oppurtunity to shine. I’m telling you, it’s going to be just like how he was in high school when he won the state championship. He will lead our team to a Bowl and we will win the WAC Championship again!!!

  183. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 1:42 pm

Hey ST…what about Salas? He has a fractured finger and I assume he is going to play this week since he’ll probably have to play with that for the whole season. Any other injury reports. Seems like we came out of the Florida game fairly healthy.

  184. Stretch September 2, 2008 1:42 pm

Posted this earlier today but will post every so often in case someone comes up with a ticket.

    OSU Game Ticket

We are looking for one ticket for a Tsaiko to attend the game. Does anyone have an extra?? Please email be at stretch6592 at yahoo. Mahalo

  185. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 1:44 pm

Hmm…who else going den, cause ainokea about dem Fresno St. Puppies, it’s going to be nawts…I readeh alreadeh…teee huu!!!

  186. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 1:47 pm

Kazz – So you telling me get #11 den??? If so, can you do a lil HABU and Hook A Brotha Up…much mahalos in advance! By the way if no moa XXL, then maybe one XL will do…but I’ve been trying to hit the gym and no like look like homey in one skin tight jersey…

  187. Maverick September 2, 2008 1:51 pm

Kazz, I think Pauoa boy just wen throw one Bug bomb on CJS1. >.”Chillax Tampax with his puka panties all kukai in da crack”

Thwaaaap! My laugh of the day

  188. Stephen Tsai September 2, 2008 1:51 pm

Salas will play. His left hand was iced up after today’s practice, but he’s good to go. He said he’s fine … as long as it’s not his right hand.

  189. Koauka September 2, 2008 1:51 pm

At the Swamp this weekend, I noticed only some of the sideline seats had
seat backs. Kinda looked like the old kine stadium seat, the one the seat back folds to da thick cushion for da okole.

Is there a reason why only some of the seats had um?

  190. HiFlyer September 2, 2008 2:04 pm

Koauka – I think it’s another way for them to make money by renting you on of those folding seats with the back.

  191. Rob25 September 2, 2008 2:05 pm

Hey…Stephen…I asked about Libre first…nevamind Salas. OK, just kidding, but really is Libre going to be out longer than one game? Is LWJ feeling any affects from the helmet to helmet that he took? That was a hard hit…I was thinking that he was going to see some stars for a little while and then have a really bad headache for a couple of days.

  192. Ralph September 2, 2008 2:06 pm

good afternoon Frank, it’s nice having you blogging with us, take care of yourself and the young under your guidance, and all of you have a safe journey to the middle east…

  193. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 2:09 pm

Rob…yep, that was a mean hit. I thought he would be seeing stars for a while as well….maybe he did and still does…..hopefully, things will be good.. All in all though, I’d say we came out of that game pretty healthy….

  194. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 2:11 pm

ST…what good looking guy??? I don’t see one in the picture…..MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

  195. Stephen Tsai September 2, 2008 2:15 pm

    Rob25:
Libre won’t be out longer than one game. If anything, they would rest him this week so he’ll be 100 percent for the Oregon State game. But he’s still thinking of playing this week.

  196. Kekoa (Survivor-WB) September 2, 2008 2:19 pm

PB ~ Howzit Marine! You bettah get your distemper and rabies shots before you go Frazno! That town get more “hana lepo” than one can stomach the smell of.

Oh, and watch for flying objects like screwdrivers and such. These people are your typical country bumpkin punks from the arm pit of California. I know this goes without saying, but take care of your Tsaiko Aunties – K?

  197. Pride. September 2, 2008 2:21 pm

“Chillax Tampax with his puka panties all kukai in da crack”

I think “Chillax Tampax” goin’ be one permanent part of the Tsai-ko culture. Anytime somebody goes off on a da stupid tangent, den we hit’em wit da “chillax tampax”

  198. Pride. September 2, 2008 2:24 pm

I wish I wen take on pickcha of Kazz di past Saturday. Bruddah Kazz was in fine game face form with his tatoo and da eye black. Bugga had serious face too, I was certainly intimidated.

PB ~ I wuz goin’ sen Lead Foot Tita Aunty up deah TDY ‘fo escort duty…but she stay basking in the warm glow of her recent Anniversary gig still yet. You gotta go solo brah!

  201. Ralph September 2, 2008 2:31 pm

Pauoa boy Kazz jersey maybe a replica for $65…didn’t you want an authentic jersey or was that for a skins colt jersey….let him know if UH is selling both types?

  202. FloridaTed September 2, 2008 2:31 pm

I’m glad Inoke Funaki is getting his chance, if anybody deserves that chance, it would be him. I hope he shines and holds on to the job.

I think Weber State is the game when the offense will get into their groove and hopefully will be ready for Oregon State.

  203. Calvin from Kona September 2, 2008 2:33 pm

Whoa…some fiesty comments today. Nice to be back home to tsaiko-land

  204. Calvin from Kona September 2, 2008 2:36 pm

maybe I missed something. Isn’t Graunke back on the team? How does he fall into the QB equation now? #2, #3, #4 or #5?

  205. Bulla September 2, 2008 2:37 pm

    kama krab,

someone said i looked great on the radio this morning….haha

  206. Kekoa (Survivor-WB) September 2, 2008 2:38 pm

C from K ~ You flyin’ in from big island for da t-gate?

  207. Calvin from Kona September 2, 2008 2:41 pm

I’ll be on Oahu from Thursday morning. I have another tailgate too…so, I’ll be back and forth.

FYI..I’ll be “Calvin in Honolulu” by the end of September

  208. Kekoa (Survivor-WB) September 2, 2008 2:41 pm

Coach Bulla ~ I think it’s the way you part your hair braddah. Hehehe – Drives the women crazee huh Bull?!

  209. (Jesse) James September 2, 2008 2:44 pm

Calvin from K…nice to hear you are moving back into town….

    Bulla – I heard dat….mwahahahahaha

It will be interesting to see where TG fits into the equation.

  210. ryan September 2, 2008 2:44 pm

any word on who is the number 2 QB now?

  211. Kazz September 2, 2008 2:44 pm

    Calvin,

Seeing as Coach Mack said he will not open up the QB position, I assume Graunke will have to just wait.

I think at this point only a drastic situation will give him the chance to ascend the “depth chart”.

  212. Kazz September 2, 2008 2:45 pm

In all honesty sir, they were also on my face to hide the bags underneath my eyes from not being able to sleep the night before.

  215. Calvin from Kona September 2, 2008 2:55 pm

    Thanks Kazz..

I wonder what would constitute a “drastic situation?” I guess if Hawaii looks good this weekend (and wins) and also wins at OSU, It’ll be Tyler who?

On the flip side…if UH loses to Weber State and OSU (with another bad offensive showing), drastic situation would be an understatement.

No matter what…good luck to UH and whoever our QB is these next 2 weeks!

  216. las vegas September 2, 2008 2:56 pm

    Welcome back ST and Everybody

Liz Chun looks big (Liz Chunky?)

  217. Calvin from Kona September 2, 2008 2:57 pm

    las vegas,

    it’s the camera angle

  218. Kazz September 2, 2008 2:59 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

    I sent you an e-mail.

  219. las vegas September 2, 2008 3:00 pm

    Calvin,
Yeah I know, the camera adds 10 pounds.

Or in my case 50 pounds.

  220. Kazz September 2, 2008 3:00 pm

    Calvin,

Yeah um… “drastic” would be defined as the second statement you made. 🙁

  221. Calvin from Kona September 2, 2008 3:06 pm

    okay…happy thoughts

Is there room to play football at the Cabana? I think my ankle can handle a game of touch.

  222. Bulla September 2, 2008 3:06 pm

    ST,

great photos, love the last one…cute girl, just wondering who’s the FOB tourist holding the shirt? a lost JTB client? j/k i don’t care what they say d

  223. Bulla September 2, 2008 3:07 pm

d1, you still got it, ichiban, as compared to itchy bun

  224. las vegas September 2, 2008 3:08 pm

I’m glad that LizKauai should be safely home by now.
Interesting to watch her eat, talk and fall asleep at the same time.

It’s always a pleasure to dine with the A-House family

  225. SteveM September 2, 2008 3:14 pm

las vegas — thanks for feeding LizKauai last night! I was wondering what you tell the Mrs. when you leave the house at around 0300 in the morning… “Tsai-ko Chapter President’s meeting at the airport?” 😆

…and I gather that was your second trip out feed visiting Tsai-kos that night. Now newcomers can see why you were the first Tsai-ko chapter president named.

  226. Kazz September 2, 2008 3:14 pm

    Calvin,

Maybe room to just throw the ball, but not enough for a game.

However, I don’t think there would be any problem walking up to the old site and playing ball on the field as long as people are far away from the pavillions and whoever may be there.

    BG, what do you think?

  227. Rob25 September 2, 2008 3:22 pm

Thanks ST! That’s good to hear. I thought that we had a decent running game going and I like the two different styles that Libe and LWJ bring to the game.

  228. las vegas September 2, 2008 3:26 pm

    SteveM,
Regards to leaving the house at 3am, I just sneak out.
Mrs LV is passed out from dinner with the A-House family and the work week.
Make like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible (dum dum dum dumdum da dum dara dum).

Yes, it was the second meal in just a few hours, but I was able to take a two hour nap in between.
And yes, I really did not need to eat a large breakfast at 330am, but LizKauai needed a partner.

  229. Rob25 September 2, 2008 3:33 pm

It’s wonderful how willing and able Tsaikos are to take care of each other. What’s even more amazing is that most of them didn’t know each other before this blog came along. It’s like instant ohana!

    Way to go Las Vegas!

  230. las vegas September 2, 2008 3:37 pm

    Rob25,
    FUUD UNITES US ALL

  231. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 3:41 pm

  232. duffer September 2, 2008 3:46 pm

Liz Chun looks big (Liz Chunky?)

Easy now LV, Liz, Esme and Jenn Boneza are what I consider The Tsai-ko Babes (Angels). 🙂

Not to mention all the other Tsai-kettes.

Am I getting myself in trouble here?????

  233. Rob25 September 2, 2008 3:48 pm

    Where’s Gigi?

  234. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 3:56 pm

Ralph – I went order Colt’s authentic jersey alreadeh, cost me roughly 3 bones but well worth it…hopefully I will catch him someday to autograph it, and add it to my collection 🙂

  235. NEO September 2, 2008 3:57 pm

LV too funny… Seriously though, if Liz Chun, Esme, Kelli, Cat, or any of the other Tsai-kettes read this, NEO thinks you’re all beautiful, upstanding, gracious women with a radiance matched only by your inner glow…

‘ho brah! How’s dat fo’ kiss ass… 🙂

    Luvluv,

  236. al September 2, 2008 4:03 pm

  237. duffer September 2, 2008 4:03 pm

Way to go NEO, make me look bad! 🙂

    BTW

LizK is in Oahu waiting to leave for Lihue…..

  238. Stephen Tsai September 2, 2008 4:05 pm

I think Alexander is t he No. 2 quarterback.
Graunke has not taken any real reps yet. He throws during warmups, but so does Steele Jantz and the rest.
My guess is that they don’t do anything with Graunke until after the Oregon State game. That’s still plenty of time: 10 regular-season games to go, including all eight WAC games.

  239. duffer September 2, 2008 4:06 pm

    Al,

Komoda long johns and stick donuts for the t-gate?

  240. al September 2, 2008 4:07 pm

gee….duff, where did jenn bonenza come from?

stretch….i hear you, i heard you, trying to figga out one cc.

ryan….my guess is that the backup qb going to be two headed and will be a game time decision, heh, heh. then the drama unfolds in a couple of weeks when some guy gets up to snuff on the new wrinkles in the offense.

another note, craft was horrible the first half, but boy did he recover quickly. then again he was the only qb they had so they stuck with him. and to think he pulled out of here that last minute.

  241. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 4:07 pm

duffer – nah Liz Chun is getting a lil thick wit it but das all good to me I like a woman with meat on her bones and who’s packing much back 🙂 Dah oddah one is mean too da kine Malika Dudley, she’s winnaz fo shua, never knew I could enjoy the weather reports so much haha…

  242. al September 2, 2008 4:09 pm

    is komoda still open?

or grilled no kaoi sausages for pupus?

hey, i might not make to maui this week. i will know by tomw.

i’ll send you the map info later.

  243. al September 2, 2008 4:14 pm

so then is blount no longer a redshirt candidate????

he is a guy i was excited about….athletically that is.
wait, that still didn’t come out right.

but, them medeiros played well i thought.

    isn’t taylor a wideout?

in any event, i believe that washington and bain will have a better game this week. it looked to me that the qb’s had problems reading the defense and didn’t anticipate the routes as well as they would have liked. i think the team really missed coach stutz that day.

i think they will simplify things on the offense and add things as we progress.

one thing absent was the number of times we were under center. i hope that is not being abandomed just yet.

  244. duffer September 2, 2008 4:15 pm

    al,

I got both the no kai oi ones and this homemade ones. Komoda’s still open, I’ll call in an order for saturday.

  245. Frank September 2, 2008 4:15 pm

Hey everyone, its about 9pm for me here, got to get up about 4am to train…..wish I was back home in Hawaii……As for my wife (rob25) she does not know what too make for the tailgate? I usually do all the cooking
and making the spam musabis.some mochiko chicken would be nice,so
I think she should make that.too bad I will not be there!!!!I am missing tailgating allready….bummers… ALOHA ALL

  246. Ralph September 2, 2008 4:17 pm

  250. al September 2, 2008 4:20 pm

    duffer…..must be the estrella’s right?

  251. Ralph September 2, 2008 4:21 pm

if the current 3 qb’s are the only ones taking reps, barring injury, TG with only mental reps will not see any game time…it would be to much of a confindence downer for the other qbs and team in general to see a qb in actual game time without having taking any reps during practice..warmups and throwing drills don’t count.

  252. duffer September 2, 2008 4:21 pm

Yeah al, the ones I neva give you yet! 🙂

    Ordered lots for the tailgate.

  253. bonar September 2, 2008 4:24 pm

  254. wafan September 2, 2008 4:25 pm

    So good to be back!!!

Thank you to everyone for the lifeboat this past week.

  255. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 4:25 pm

    Quarterbacks:

When Graunke gets his stuff together and gets himself back to business, he should backup Funaki. I wouldn’t start him for the simple fact that he is a repeat retard in not getting his school work done. Ainokea about if his class was hard or whatevas, or he’s a good guy, blah, blah, blah no matter to me! It’s in the past so we move on but still, I can forgive but never forget so with that he’s my backup this year regardless! Cannot see him starting after losing respect of his teammates and the such…I mean I’m sure the team welcomes him back with open arms but again will not forget what he did. The 2 JC’s I know everybody think is going to be the next Colt Brennan but um…I no think so. Sorry but Alexander is slow in everything, reads, release, scrambling…I don’t trust him at this point leading our team. Rausch, haven’t seen him too much in game time situation but what I did see I did not like. Too indecisive and scared to throw the ball for some reason, too tentative to me. Inexperienced, so I give him benefit of the doubt…8 man football to Div 1 level football is a huge jump, he needs a lil more time to develop before going into the fire. Funaki as you all know is my #1, may not have the size, arm strength, whatevas but he is a playmaker and has the intangibles you cannot teach, heart, desire and the will to win! Funny how that sounds like some guy name Colt, I dunno maybe it’s just me…but that’s my opinion on the situation. So I would line em up like this

    #1 Inoke Funaki
#2 Tyler Graunke – once he’s done ackin funny
#3 Brent Rausch – 3yrs to play so I ain’t worried about him too much
#4 Greg Alexander – not feeling him right now IMHO
#5 Jake Santos – if we ever need to go this far

  256. LizKauai (iPhone) September 2, 2008 4:26 pm

hiya! 99% home. Just had my hot sour soup. Almost ready to go! Mahalo for your prayers!

  257. wafan September 2, 2008 4:29 pm

You guys are making it very difficult to read this blog.

All the talk of the T-Gates and more specifically the foods are particularly brutal.

But, I would not wish you to stop any time soon! I might need a bib, though.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

did someone say we have electricity for some ‘healthy’ blended drinks? rob25, am i playing your song…..(sounds of a blender crushing ice…)

    Stephen,

are THE Princess and her videos back too?

    is there a contract finally?

    or is this just temporary.

also, isn’t it great to be back in Hawaii heat and humidity?

  263. KonaBoy September 2, 2008 4:36 pm

Aloha from perma-voggy Kona & welcome back ST. Was hard to gauge the team as a whole against the Gators, due to the fact the the offense in it’s current form was an unkown come game time. I thought the D did a great job containing Tebow. They were just on the field too much because of the O. I think they had only had 3 drives were I felt they got out played by the Gator O. That will happen when your D can’t off the field! That being said, I think that the D should be able to contain, if not dominate the Webber St.

Offensively, O-line looked pretty solid. So did the running game at times. The passing game is impossible to gauge from what I saw Saturday. Obviously, I think the coaches should be focusing Funaki and Graunke to carry us through the season. Saturday should give us an idea of were we’re at with the QB situation and in turn our passing game as a whole. The 2 JC’s look like they should be regulated to 4th qtr. cleanup until proven otherwise.

    Until next time… GO WARRIORS!

  264. chawan_cut September 2, 2008 4:37 pm

thanks to LizK and SteveM for the lifeboat while this was down. i understand how hard it is to keep a site going while travelling.

    GRILL SPACE FOR T-GATE

Fyi, there are already about 4 different dishes that need the use of the grill, now from what I remember the grill at the new site is smaller than the one from last year so in the best interest of the time it takes for various items to be cooked, it would be best that additional food contributions be something that doesn’t need to be cooked at the tailgate site.

    Mahalo for the consideration.

  268. Rob25 September 2, 2008 4:44 pm

Oh Bulla, you could make it the bestest opening game at Aloha Stadium for me! You just let me know what to bring and it’ll be there. I even have one of those rocket blenders that I bought from Macy’s that I haven’t used.

  269. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 4:46 pm

Kazz – Nah was in North Carolina actually, bruddah was supposed to land at the NC-Mcneese St. game but landed at the Duke-James Madison game…

  270. NYUH September 2, 2008 4:49 pm

The real reason UH lost to Florida? No Tsai-kick energy from this blog? I personally really missed it. Mahalo also to all the fans that made the trip to Gainesville!

    Stephen,

Can you find out what the story on the uniforms not being tucked in. It looked bad on TV. Maybe it was a problem with the uniforms and not a discipline problem.

    Kazz:
    September 2nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm

I saw a poll on the sports hawaii site asking people what they thought about the new road uniforms and I personally LOVE them, only thing tho…

Why do they seem SO LONG at the bottom?

  271. koakane™ September 2, 2008 4:57 pm

al agree with you so adding my 2¢ by saying “das old toilet bowl”

    September 2nd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

  272. Kazz September 2, 2008 4:57 pm

    NYUH,

Jason said Coach Mack said he’ll address that issue with the team. If you noticed I believe it was either Ryan Mouton or Mike Washington that got their jersey ripped at the bottom.

The bottom “flaps” of the jerseys were just begging for people to pull on them.

    Pauoa Boy,

Oh well NC and Duke are like what 40 something miles apart. Not too bad I guess…

    But still…. BAH BOOOZE!!!!

  273. NEO September 2, 2008 5:04 pm

    Hey all,

Just read ESPN.com’s bottom ten teams, and they’re saying that “Hawaii is on the waiting list to be one of the bottom 10… WHAT A CROCK!! just thought I’d share…

  274. wafan September 2, 2008 5:07 pm

It took more than one person to make the jump and land at the wrong game.

As someone elaborated earlier this year (I think)

    1 = babooze
    2 = baboozes
    3+ = babeezes

  275. NEO September 2, 2008 5:08 pm

haha, all this talk about uniforms… I finally saw OrSt. home unis… MANBRA IS RIGHT!!! even get the armholes… But braddahs get some implants if their breasts are THAT high… HAHAHAHA jus’ jokin’…

  276. Ralph September 2, 2008 5:09 pm

Pauoa Boy I hope the dude wasn’t a former airborne out of Bragg

  277. SteveM September 2, 2008 5:12 pm

Following up Kazz’s post #257, here’s a summary of the known Tsaiko-Gate contributions as sent by Kazz as of 1630…

    – Addahknowsports: Teriyaki BBQ sticks (for grill)
    – James: BBQ chicken
    – BG: Shoyu chicken (5 lbs.)
    – myki: mochiko chicken
    – Kazz & friends: steak and smoked ribs
    – duffer: Maui portuguese sausage
    – Auntie-Tita-Leadfoot: Apple coffee cake

From the blog… pastry (long johns, stick donuts?) from Al via duffer?

The above listing is mostly updated via Kazz along with RSVPs. Menus updates and attendance count is at the Tsaiko-Gate page under Kazz’s direction.

  279. Kazz September 2, 2008 5:25 pm

    In addition to SteveM’s post:

It seems that in addition to the team returning to Aloha Stadium with “Hawaii Five O”, that the marching band will also have another surprise musical piece that is supposed to lead into it.

Tentatively the “end time” to start cleaning up after ourselves is at around 5pm, but with the new site we do need to take a little longer walk than normal to the stadium, so let’s all work together to make sure we are in our respective seats to witness the return of a tradition and the start of a new one!!!

  283. Garret September 2, 2008 5:36 pm

    ST,

That makes sense because of the bye week after Oregon State. They will be busy with game preparation this week and next week, especially since they will lose time due to having to travel to Oregon State. During the bye week they will give Tyler some reps and see how things shake out. Plus, that will give 2 more games to evaluate the current 3 QBs before making a decision with Tyler.

  285. Garret September 2, 2008 5:40 pm

With all the mention of food on today’s blog I forgot to mention something we stumbled across during our drive from San Diego to the Bay Area. The L&L in Glendale, CA (next to the movie theater) had malasadas! Even more important, 10 malasadas cost just $3.49!!! That was awesome–we bought 10 of course and I ate most of them. They weren’t as big as the ones from Leonard’s back in Hawaii, but they were nearly as big and Leonard’s cost $6.50 for 10 the last time I was in Hawaii.

  286. Esme September 2, 2008 5:43 pm

*bursts to the surface of the water, gasping for air, rips off life jacket and looks around grinning at perplexed fellow Tsaikos — who look at their watches and shake their heads …*

    Phew!

Good to be back! (Sorry, tardy, I was on the road all day.)

Our lifeboat was awesome — thanks so much, Liz, and everyone else who kept us all afloat during the, er, interim.

But it’s good to be back, and good to ST at the helm again.

  287. Esme September 2, 2008 5:43 pm

By the way … did y’all notice the add at the bottom of today’s blog? … 😀 We’re having a makeover.

Not ME. The HawaiiMoms Web site. Jeez.

    😆

  288. Esme September 2, 2008 5:44 pm

OK, I just noticed that the ad jumps around — it’s now at the top of the blog. And who knows where it will be — if it will be here at all — when the next person reads my post. Haha.

  289. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 5:45 pm

The jerseys are form fitted for the most part so they didn’t look that bad untucked, but I did see Mouton get his jersey ripped at one point in the game…

    Liz,

I’m glad that you made it back home! That was such a travel ordeal!

  297. NYUH September 2, 2008 5:50 pm

LOL, thanks Kazz and ST for the info on the uniforms. I’m not hung up on this issue but it was noticeable and in stark contrast to the home team, even with their ugly uniforms. Although I was scarred once when I was watching UH nearly beat Notre Dame in an upstate NY bar and almost got into a fight with someone who referred to the UH players as “a bunch of bums”.

  298. Garret September 2, 2008 5:53 pm

Wow, it looks like Google Chrome is MUCH faster than Firefox! IE 7 and IE 8 are much, much slower than both. I wonder if that would help much for this blog…I think that when things slow down here it is the server and now my Firefox browser that is the cause.

As you can see, Google Chrome savegly beats all the opposition running the V8 benchmark suite a whopping ten times faster than Firefox 3.0.

Google Chrome certainly has delivered on the speed it promised, and so far testing indcates that the browser is very robust – over the past few hours I’ve been hammering it very hard and I’ve yet to have a crash.

  299. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 5:53 pm

  302. koakane™ September 2, 2008 5:56 pm

imho sorry but disagree with some. jersey’s need to be tucked in and looks way better. if adjustments needed then discussion should take place between players and UA.

just reminds me of what some coaches used to say ……… look good play good.

  303. wafan September 2, 2008 5:57 pm

    Thanks! Our eyes are safe!!!

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha!

  304. Kazz September 2, 2008 5:58 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

Only get the home ones anyway for now.

But I really like them as the green on the sleeves are a darker green and not as bright as I orginally thought.

BTW, as I tell as many people as I can, when washing them, do so gently by hand. The material on replica jerseys are thin and the screen printed letters and numbers will peel after a few spins in the machine.

My #15 Nike one is peeling badly. Well, it’s retired anyway. I still haven’t got the chance to wear my Authentic #15 to a game yet, maybe homecoming tho…

  305. wafan September 2, 2008 5:59 pm

    Good night, all!

    Kids come in tomorrow.

    Oh, the horror, the horror.

  306. al September 2, 2008 5:59 pm

don’t those game jerseys look a bit short?

i say a slim mouton running about with very short tails, can you imagine how short they are for the lineman.

btw, good to see kia get his opportunity.

  307. LizKauai (iPhone) September 2, 2008 6:04 pm

Now if only my kids would pick me up from the airport. 🙁

  308. Pauoa Boy September 2, 2008 6:07 pm

Kazz – Das the main reason I no like replicas cause of cosmetic defects that occur. I like the authentic feel of the material and stitched name and numbers rather than screen printed. Rather pay for a quality jersey than a replica, but replicas is good for go games in case get somebody ackin funny, den gotta pull pants and get nawts and jus buckaloose…if rip den rip but moa easy for replace laddat…

  309. d1島: September 2, 2008 6:09 pm

Since the 2008 Tsaiko-Gate web page URL is only released by Kazz for security reasons for the time being, I have placed the tailgate attendee count and known potluck contributions on the Tsai-ko Events Calendar for quick reference. Click on the brown link.

  346. Garret September 2, 2008 8:49 pm

    Ralph,

Lori found the problem with Google toolbar also and she won’t download it until they come up with their update that is compatible with Google toolbar. I’m probably going to stick with Firefox for now, but I plan to transfer over if they do a good job with their next version.

  347. al September 2, 2008 8:52 pm

kazz….i was only joshing. what’s a tailgate without the brews and koakane? or is it vice versa???

well still not sure what to bring. since your grill is overloading i guess it will be prepared already.

stevem….the boss ran into you and peaches yesterday huh?

  348. SteveM September 2, 2008 9:13 pm

stevem….the boss ran into you and peaches yesterday huh?

Yes, Al. Was good to see her after almost a year…and your daughter too. I got the Boss’s direct email address and promised to send the Karaoke Call announcements directly to her… 😆

  349. BG September 2, 2008 9:20 pm

Listened to the “Call the Coach Show” and re-affirmed my trust in Coach Mac and the team. Mac is as honest and sincere as much as the Tsaikos love fuud…two absolutes in the universe! How did we get so lucky to land Coach Mac and Heather?!!

I absolutely love what A-Joe has started repeating on the blog…
7 down! 8 UP! I’d love it to be our theme for the year. The Warriors could use it…Tyler needs it…we can believe in it!

    GO WARRIORS

  350. Garret September 2, 2008 9:26 pm

It could be interesting to see Washington State punt after the Warrior D stops them time after time.

Special teams are anything but at Washington State, where punter Reid Forrest stepped in a hole and broke his ankle this summer.

The Cougars turned to fourth-string quarterback Dan Wagner, who averaged 23.5 net yards in a 39-13 loss to Oklahoma State.

The Cougars also missed an extra-point attempt. Coach Paul Wulff vowed to stick with kicker Wade Penner. Sort of.

“Hey,” he said, “it could change in the middle of the game.”

  351. BG September 2, 2008 9:49 pm

Looking forward to seeing TChahng on Sat. Coming into the season, I kept thinking how difficult it would be to equal the T-gates of ’07. Silly me! We have Tsaikos from around the world who come to share the fervor of football and the genuine spirit of the Ohana. We are truly blessed.

Aloha ST and the Tsai-ko crew,

Thanks for having my family and I come to Genji’s. They really enjoyed it. Hope you’re all doing well. I’ll resume blogging tomorrow.

Are you ready for Saturday?!?!? GO WARRIORS!!!

  354. Kekoa (Survivor-WB) September 2, 2008 10:07 pm

BG ~ Are there plans for gathering back at the Cabana site after the game? That same little game bird is chirping away again! What is the time limit on the use?

  355. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 2, 2008 10:11 pm

    Aloha kakou:

This Saturday, we’ll bring two folding tables and a recycling bin to collect empty HI-5 cans & bottles at the T-Gate party.

Recycling proceeds will be be sent to Alan Inaba, cross-country coach at Dole Middle School, to help purchase running shoes for his kids. HA columnist Lee Cataluna wrote about his efforts to outfit his runners properly – even paying for shoes out of his own pocket.

If you would like to bring your cans & bottles from home to donate to this worthy cause, please do so. You can also make a financial donation which we’ll include with the redemption proceeds to save a postage stamp or two. Instructions for donations are at the bottom of the article.

Waiting for other shoes to drop in

    By Lee Cataluna

Alan Inaba went to the Adidas outlet in Waikele last weekend and bought 24 pairs of shoes in a buy-one-get-the-second-pair-half-off sale. He still needs more shoes.

Inaba coaches cross-country at Dole Middle School in Kalihi.

When he first started coaching 10 years ago, only 10 kids showed up to run. This year, 74 students signed up. They come every day after school and after study hall and run 2 miles down to Farrington High School and back or through Kalihi Valley. The kids flap along in whatever footwear they own.

“I would say maybe 10 of them actually have shoes made for running,” Inaba said. The rest wear heavy shoes designed for basketball or skateboarding, clunky shoes that have no arch support. Some run in slippers. Last week, five girls showed up in sandals.

Inaba has given three pairs of his own shoes to students and has taken up a collection of used shoes among Dole teachers.

“I just don’t want anybody to get injured,” Inaba said.

More than 70 percent of the Dole student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch. It’s not a community where parents can easily afford new shoes. The money for the on-sale adidas came from a donation from the Dole Ohana. Often, Inaba and co-coach Barry Tanouye throw in their own money for snacks, socks, whatever.

The team got uniforms two years ago. It was the first time they all matched. At the end of the year, the kids have to give back the clothes, scrubbed and deodorized. This year, it’s hand-me-downs again. “Lots of fruit punch stains,” Inaba says. But they’re happy they all can dress alike at meets.

To save money, the team shares a bus with Kawananakoa and Jarrett schools to get to Saturday meets. To ensure that all the runners are on time for the early-morning bus, Inaba hosts a sleepover the night before on the floor of the school library. In the morning, he buys the kids breakfast. He tries to talk them into the Dollar Menu at McDonald’s, but they tell him, “Those McGriddles look good” and out comes his wallet.

Inaba himself is not a runner. His sport is baseball. He jokes that he read the “Complete Idiot’s Guide to Running” and the “Cross Country Guide for Dummies” to learn about the sport. And then he pulls one of the books from his shelf to show he wasn’t kidding.

“In the books,” he says, “they all talk about the importance of proper shoes.”

Anyone who would like to donate gently used shoes to Dole Cross Country can drop them off at the school. Monetary donations (checks made out to Dole Middle School) would also be accepted and greatly appreciated. Dole Middle School is at 1803 Kam IV Road, Honolulu, HI 96819 (phone 832-3340).

  356. Jason September 2, 2008 10:13 pm

    BG: Ditto.

I think back to the 2006 Oregon State game, where I left the house at 4 to make it to Aloha Stadium by 5, but there were bus accidents so I just started walking around 6. (The game started at 7 that day.) Long story short, I hiked all the way to Radford High (from Salt Lake Shopping Center — that’s 1.7 miles!), where I got picked up by a rookie bus driver doing whatever she wanted, she was going crazy cause of the traffic. I literally made it the minute before kickoff.

Now, I have no excuses to be there with plenty of time. Back then, I never have reason to get there before 5; I’d just be wasting time, sitting in my seat all alone with the hot sun overhead Now, gotta get to the tailgates early to get food. After all, growing boys need to eat. 😛

Kazz/SteveM: Count me in for attending. I’ll try to bring some individually-wrapped sweets or small snack stuff, I’ll let you know.

  357. djmitcho September 2, 2008 10:16 pm

Oregon St.’s uniforms are not the sports bra type this year. They have gone to a very tradtional type of jersey this year.
    See them here: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3267/2713780772_6123d6c2ae.jpg?v=0

  358. djmitcho September 2, 2008 10:19 pm

It’s good to be on the WB once again. I hope they start selling the new jerseys online soon. I would very much like to have one for the Boise St. game.

are you sure she gave you a legit addy?

btw, the #2 son will be my date for the home games.

  362. HiFlyer September 2, 2008 10:43 pm

al – you are correct about tables, there are four metal picnic tables at the cabana, if anything bring your own chairs.

  363. al September 2, 2008 10:56 pm

small kine trivia….okay no cheating, no googling, no checking the rosters, no checking any other sports info websites, no recruiting websites, etc.

scouts’ honor, swearing upon a stack of bibles.

    answer this one.

who are the eight remaining warriors from the 2004 recruiting class?

winner gets one free lunch on the next cattle call.

  364. Jason September 2, 2008 11:16 pm

Al: I got three of the eight I think you’re talking about, and I had two more that I changed my mind on. But I also have five others that I know came in 2004, I guess they all walked on. That, and a whole bunch of guys I thought were 2004 but were 2005. 😛

  365. SteveM September 2, 2008 11:18 pm

More ship repositioning during football season frustration:

Al– name the cruise ship departing Seattle on September 19 and 13 days later docks in Osaka, Japan after stopping in Russia and 2 other Japanese ports for $749 inside cabin? Hmmm, the 19th is the date mom and Peaches leave for Washington D.C. for a week…cattle call and karaoke call time? 👿

But mom is still trying to ship me off alone to Auckland, New Zealand on a16 day romp through French Polynesia in October for $889 on a 5-star ship… 😐

  367. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 2, 2008 11:37 pm

    Al:

Actually, Kazz was the one who suggested the tables to set up under the tents on the lawn so that people will have somewhere to put their plates and beverage containers. The cabana tables will hold the food and paper products.

I’ve sent him an e-mail about the need for another tent as well. If he doesn’t need the tables and the additional tent, he can let us know.

  368. al September 2, 2008 11:42 pm

stevem……didn’t you guys purchase season tix?

you must be a nuisance to your mom that she wants to either leave for 13 days or ship you off for another 16. thats a whole month!

but, stevem, be honest you wouldn’t miss a cattle call nor a karaoke kall even if they were still at home.

    mwahahahahaha.

Heisman Pundit and the Orlando Sentinel are polling Heisman voters again. I’m surprised after the UH game that Tebow is STILL leading the Heisman race!

The second Heismanpundit.com/Orlando Sentinel Heisman Poll of the 2008 college football season has been tallied and the panel–-consisting of 10 Heisman-voting members of the college football media–-has junior Florida quarterback Tim Tebow narrowly leading the race to win this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Tebow–who is trying to become just the second two-time winner of the award–collected five first-place votes and totaled 34 points to squeak by Missouri senior quarterback Chase Daniel (1 first place vote, 31 total points). Daniel knocked Ohio State junior running back Chris Wells out of the No. 2 spot after throwing for 323 yards in Missouri’s win over No. 20 Illinois.

Nice reading about Calvin Roberts getting a promotion to starting CB. Mack has stated that the players that give the team the best chance to win will play…apparently he means it.

  393. d1島 September 3, 2008 6:34 am

Not only will the team be entering to Hawaii 5-0 but there will be added flair.

Fans in the first row of the stadium seating will be given ti leaves and will be urged to paddle as soon as the band plays Hawaii 5-0

Was this what Kazz was hinting about?

  394. d1島 September 3, 2008 6:39 am

    Regarding Chrome:

my tabs and bookmarks came over without any prompting. This browser had speed and stability that Firefox doesn’t have. Holding onto Firefox because it has Google toolbar and blowing off Chrome is like saying you keep an old Sentra because it has a sunroof that the new Maxima doesn’t have.
