Former UH punter Alex Dunnachie and long-snapper Luke Ingram are scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis today for the NFL Scouting Combine.

Each already has been interviewed by 20 NFL teams.

Ingram is scheduled to participate in the 225-pound bench press, vertical jump and, possibly, the 40-yard dash.

Dunnachie is scheduled to only punt, although he said he would be willing to participate in any of the sprints or jumps.

Former UH cornerback/returner Mike Edwards, who has been training in Arizona, will arrive in Indianapolis on Friday.

UH needs a punter. Harding was good in a pinch but McBriar and Dunnachie proved to be valuable assets in changing field position with their booming punts. Chow should be tapping the Aussies again for the next McBriar or Dunnachie.

I think Harding did a great job until the opposing teams figured out how to counter that rugby style punt. IIRC, it didn’t work as well after a couple of games.

Hope we do find ourselves a full time punter.

  17. Former UH Athlete February 19, 2013 8:51 am

#14… The rugby punt is awful and there’s too many moving parts to be consistent. The punter has to move about 5-7 yards before kicking, whereas a standard punt is only 2-3 steps.

The advantage to the rugby kick is when the ball takes a crazy bounce, but the weakness is that there’s no hang time and coverage doesn’t have time to cover when the ball bounces forward and the returner is able to grab it quickly.

Every team in the NFL still does it the old way and there’s rarely a blocked punt, so why mess with what works.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COMMITTED ROAD WARRIOR !!!

I vaguely remember him selecting his blog name around 5 years ago. Kinda long blog name I thought… but he has lived up to blog name. I know he has attended almost all UH football road games since then.

His most memorable treks was to drive from Arizona (his school/residence at the time) to FRESNO, watch the game, then drive home immediately after the game. Another was at SJSU, when he flew from Washington D.C. to SFO with a few hours to spare, drove down to San Jose and made the game. Stretch let him use his hotel room shower after the game and he drove back to SFO to catch a night flight back to D.C.

A few months ago jm2375 and Committed Road Warrior inaugurated the Washington D.C Tsai-ko “chaptah”. Now the game is headed his way this November. πŸ™‚ I’m starting a pool on his missing that game because it’s too close. πŸ‘Ώ

With Chow’s offense, field-position is a must…so, I’m rather surprised that he hasn’t spent much time trying to secure a good punter. I noticed on WSN, that there are a number of JC kickers still available including a transfer from Utah who can play 1 year. C’mon Chow, get with it…

I’m in agreement that we need to find a punter. Rugby style punts are situational at best and cannot be relied upon in times of poor field position. I am rather shocked that UH has not secured a punter yet.

Good luck to those participating in the upcoming combine.

Really, “C’mon Chow, geet with it…”

Maybe it’s me, but are you really qualified to make such a statement, be so dis-respectful?

And I ask, have you asked coach himself how much time he’s spent trying to secure a punter…?

Monday morning quarterbacks and back-seat drivers need a reality check sometimes….SHEEESH….!

I’m pretty sure coach Chow know what he’s got and what he needs…..

    Just sayin….!

  46. Former UH Athlete February 19, 2013 2:41 pm

#27, unfortunately, college coaches don’t spend much time looking for kicker/punters because they are too busy trying to beat out other schools for the position recruits. Often don’t look at special teams until after signing day because many coaches don’t want to use up scholarships on kickers when they only have 25 LOIs with scholarships. Sad but true. See Boise St and their kicking woes that cost them a couple of BCS bowl berths.

The good news is that college football doesn’t have strict roster limits like the NFL, so they can bring in a handful of guys and the coaches let them compete for the job. Too bad UH doesn’t have a men’s soccer team to poach kickers from.

I had a high school classmate that had a huge leg and was easily making 55yd FGs in high school and was the top kicker in the league but two Pac 10 teams he was in contact with wouldn’t offer a scholarship because they didn’t give scholarships for freshmen kickers. He ended up getting an offer from Montana and helped get the Grizzlies to 3 National Championship game appearances in his 4 years. Griz won the title in 2001.

UH leadership is going to investigate management by one of their own. Truly the blind leading the blind.

Get comfy! This is going to be good. Which outside counsel will they hire and for how much. Hopefully, one of our Tsai-ko counselors will be tapped with the golden wand. I figure if someone is going to make the cash it might as well be someone I know and respect.

Hope (in addition to cash) springs, apparently, eternal(ly) from the UH leadership. So much for transparency.

I would think the added TV bonus money might compensate for the travel subsidies. Besides, its not costing UH anymore than what was paid last year. Now that I think about it, its less than last year.

    Shoko

    Per Ferd’s article this morning

Under terms of its football-only entry into the conference in 2011, UH agreed to a “travel cost sharing” plan whereby it would reimburse Mountain West teams coming to Hawaii. Teams from California are to receive $150,000 each and those from outside California $175,000 apiece.

Good luck Mike, Luke and Alex
