In the mix

Securing commitments from offensive lineman Thomas Olds Jr. of San Clemente (Calif.) High and linebacker Brenden Daley of Ventura (Calif.) College was big. What could be bigger is the the Warriors now are in the running for one of the state’s best prospects — defensive end Juda Parker of Saint Louis School.

Parker said he withdrew a verbal commitment to Tennessee, and now lists UH, Washington and Oregon State as his favored choices. He said he completed a UH recruiting trip yesterday afternoon, and is scheduled to visit Oregon State next month. He said he probably will not make a final decision until the week of the Feb. 2 signing day.

The availability of  backup defensive end Siaki Cravens remains in question as he tries to recover from an injury to his patella. Cravens has attended practices on crutches, although he walks without them the rest of the time. He said he suffered the injury during a workout session.

Tulsa arrived yesterday, and will have its first practice this morning at Aloha Stadium. Only the first 15 minutes of practice are open to the media. Tulsa’s practices are closed to the public.

And, yes, that was Neil from UH’s sports media relations who shot the video/interviews yesterday.

Hey, anybody else see that guy whose car was stuck on the Vineyard off ramp? It was crazy.

  8. Stephen Tsai December 20, 2010 12:48 am

I knew it would be a nasty day when they turned on the Ching field lights for practice.

Anyway, UH goes again from 10 a.m. to noon today. That’s three more days to get autographs from Greg Salas, Alex Green and Kealoha Pilares.

  9. cheepono December 20, 2010 12:53 am

we got about a month and a half left of this year’s recruiting season and ZERO local commits so far. local boys gotta realize that we can’t afford to wait around on them forever.

seems moreso than past years that the top Hawaii prospects are holding off on announcing their decisions… asiata, parker, hill, kaai, tuumalo, etc.

Daley’s VC teammate, defensive end Jon Lattimore, who had 15 tackles for a loss and nine sacks as a sophomore, is also considering Hawaii.

“Hopefully, Latt will come here, too,” said Daley, who spent part of his visit learning to surf at Waikiki Beach.

Daley said he is poised to fill a void at middle linebacker for the Warriors.

“I’m coming into a perfect situation,” said Daley.

The hyperkinetic linebacker thereby declared his recruiting closed.

He was being pursued by a list of schools that included Washington and Cincinnati.

“This is it,” said Daley. “I’m happy here. I gave them my word and I’m going to stand by it. I’m ready to rock.”

    And more Great news.

    Wang sits up unaided

Posted on 4:56 pm, Sunday, December 19, 2010.

From David Chen, husband of Theresa Wang, who is recovering at The Queen’s Medical Center from injuries sustained in the Nov. 19 car crash that also injured Colt Brennan:

    Aloha to our growing ohana,

Looks like I may have sent out that last update too soon. More visitors and gifts arrived throughout the afternoon and by the end of Friday, there was a book of poems, a CD boombox and not one but two birthday cakes to enjoy, the latter of which was shared by the grateful nurses and aids of the unit as they sang Happy Birthday to me.

And Theresa wasn’t done with the gift giving either; the morning birthday kiss was an unexpected treat but she had something even more special to offer: When the OT/PT therapists came by mid-afternoon, their plan was to get Theresa into a seated position, seeing that she now tolerates being upright in the cardiac chair for hours at a stretch. They weren’t expecting too much out of this first attempt, especially as up to now, Theresa is more alert and responsive in the morning and usually sleeps away the afternoon and evening.

So what transpired when the three therapists propped Theresa up, swung her legs to dangle off the side of the bed and slowly released their support was a small miracle. At first, Theresa wavered back and forth into the therapists’ arms but after a minute, she corrected her slouch, engaged her trunk muscles and was able to remain balanced in a seated position for over five minutes; all without even opening her eyes except to check out the grinning fool at her feet encouraging her on. Yet another milestone on Theresa’s healing journey for which I give thanks to our Heavenly Father.

Saturday was a day of rest for the both of us. Theresa relaxed to the soothing cello music of Jami Sieber’s “Hidden Sky” album and the healing rhythms and chants of Nawong Khechog, a Tibetan flutist. After Friday’s full agenda, Theresa seemed more than content to while away the day in bed, and with the rehab therapists off for the weekend, that was the plan.

Now that the leg splints are off, Theresa has the freedom to flex her lower extremities as much as she wants. At one point (and I wish I could share the image but there’s a strict no-photography policy here) when Theresa crossed her legs and raised her arm to rest on her forehead, the pose was so relaxed that she wouldn’t look out of place lounging on a poolside chaise instead of a hospital bed.

Later in the day when Theresa was moved to the cardiac chair to exercise her body in an upright posture, I took the time to run some errands nearby. Only Safeway, Longs Drugs, Zippy’s and Papa John’s are within a 10-minute walk so the shopping & dining selection is limited yet suffices for the basics.

For items not available nearby like those difficult-to-find 500ml bottles of Hawaiian Springs water used for Theresa’s infusions, friends have generously answered these special requests. I continue to be thankful to our Lord for my faith in Him, and for His sending us this aid from our friends, family and even total strangers.

Today is Sunday and it’s been raining non-stop since 1 a.m., about the same time that the power went out. Fortunately the hospital has a generator but the family apartment unit does not so it became increasingly stuffy in the bedroom. Around 5 a.m. the power was restored so hopefully nothing spoiled in the fridge.

The chapel service this morning was interesting, to say the least. Last Sunday, there was a combination Christian/Jewish sermon where the chaplain discussed the commercialization of Christmas and Hannukah. This morning the service was more like gospel rock, a form of worship that’s new to me but at this point, I am open to all of the varied ways that we celebrate God’s faith.

Upon arriving at Theresa’s room, the nurses had already moved her to the cardiac chair for upright therapy. It was clear from Theresa’s grimace that she was in pain since now that she is regaining partial consciousness, she must also be feeling the pain of the 20+ fractures from her neck to her heel. In the first month of Theresa’s healing journey, she was spared much of the pain due to her semi-comatose state.

Next on God’s schedule is to awaken her so she can begin to participate in the rehab therapies to come. For this we are grateful, not just for the healing power of God but also for Theresa’s pain as it is a sign that she is coming back to us.

    Mahalo,

    David

the good news is having its expected effect on dis brudda, and am sure its having da same effect on Colt, his ohana and his darlin… 😀

great news. keep truckin, Dr. Wang!

Got most of the fam flying in from the islands over two day 22nd-23rd. Got 20 people in two houses this year. Yikes…how your swimming pool? Flood over yet? The old ladies better get here from Hilo. I can hear my Mom calling 25 times if they get stuck on Oahu. Called the cousin to get the old ladies on Oahu if they stuck there. Not good…better clear up for Game Day as folks all over want to see sunshine on TV. Good for Hawaii tourism when game day has good weather.

not unless he were to come by earlier and take the one that i was saving for the holy grail who would be him. so then, i wouldn’t need it then would i? but what if he weren’t the holy one then i should have kept it in my hip pocket instead.

darn, what is a coach to do?

i guess i could call time out.

So how did Tulsa beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame?

Irish quarterback Crist was knocked out of the game

in the first quarter when he was hit out of bounds.

Tulsa then scored on a 66-yard interception return right before the half by Shawn Jackson and a 59-yard punt return by Damaris Johnson in the third quarter. Tulsa kicked a field goal and then intercepted

an endzone pass attempt by Notre Dame to seal the deal.

  93. Pride. December 20, 2010 9:31 am

There is no such thing as a holy grail. There is also no such thing as a franchise. All of Hawaii’s recruits have tons of potential. Most will pan out, some won’t due to injuries and possibly cademic struggles. All will be given an ample opportunity to shine. But football is a team sport. All recruits are imortant to the University of Hawaii, not just one or two. All recruits are special.

  94. madeinhawaii December 20, 2010 9:31 am

  96. NCAA December 20, 2010 9:39 am

The holy grail is a lineage of players who represents/represented the University of Hawaii in all sports. Wasn’t there a movie with a similar premise?

  97. madeinhawaii December 20, 2010 9:39 am

BTW.. in jan ken po, what is the hand gesture for ‘dynamite’? How do you signify ‘kryptonite’?

  98. Pride. December 20, 2010 9:39 am

Hawaii fans think that recruiting against opposing college coaches is the toughest part of recruiting. The fact of the matter is that recruiting against the local boy’s own high school coaches is the biggest challenge. Many times when a local player tells his own coach that he is interested in considering staying home in front of his family to play, The high school coach tells him that he needs to consider all of his options. The player is encouraged to go to the mainland to get more exposure and play in a BCS conference where the education is better.

That, my dear friends is happening right now. Right at this moment.

  99. papajoe2 December 20, 2010 9:40 am

At 6’4′ 255lbs, Daley would make a huge linebacker. Everybody thinks that he should be a de, but wouldn’t he dominate at mlinebacker ala Henderson “the mad stork” for Oakland? With the long frame, pass defense and tackling would be a plus. On film, looks like he can move too.

  103. Pride. December 20, 2010 9:50 am

Thomas Olds Jr. looks like a good get. After watching his film, it made me think of a Kaleikini kid from Kapolei who is in the same mold. Haven’t heard his name on anyone’s list.

There is another tall lanky ball player from Pac-5 by the name of Kalepa that looks to me to be a long range prospect. Reminds me of Jerry Scanlan who played for Hawaii and the Redskins. Like I said a very long, lanky kid, but looks like he has tons of potential. I’m not sure if he is on anyone’s list.

Bigtime sleeper is this Coen kid from Pearl City. I believe that he is being pursued heavily by all of the Northwest schools, and Stanford. I’ll be darned if the kid actually wants to stay home and play in front of his family. What??? A scholarship to Stanford? A chance to play for a national championship at Oregon? and he wants to go where? Hawaii??? You’ve got to be kidding?

    Good morning everyone!

Got the contest guesses posted through 1010 this morning. Taking a break for brunch.

My 16 year old microwave burnt out this morning. Lasted a loooong time. Just realizing how dependent I’ve become on the microwave to warm up stuff…rice, buns, manapua, pot pies, TV dinners, etc.

I’m in for Cattle Call tomorrow. Time change to 11:30? OK

  134. NCAA December 20, 2010 11:20 am

From the video, Kalepa has good arm length and a good base. As mentioned earlier he does look like a good prospect down the road. I’m not an expert and only basing my comment on observation. If I recall, it was mentioned that Pride played in the o-line trenches so he must see something that people like me don’t see.

  135. sports for fun December 20, 2010 11:23 am

maybe a couple of years at the juco route will help that Pac-5 kid develop into a strong DI prospect. There was a lot of quick throws in his video, so to me, it was kind of hard to tell how strong he is in pass protection.

  136. jeezy33 December 20, 2010 11:23 am

I take an account in the video that the so called pancake blocks are against guys under 200 pounds. Good D ends would have a field day in my opinion. Good Walk on prospect who could maybe play guard some day. I like Muir, Olds a whole lot better.

The Tackle i do want is Wes Schweitzer

  137. Pomai December 20, 2010 11:25 am

#94 – Pride – maybe some day they will learn. All one has to do is look back to previous overlooked kids that went on to join the Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors and Warriors.

Watcxhed his video before and saw him play. I understand everything that you are saying and thought that he had upside. I’m not an expert and the coaches are the experts, so maybe what you are saying is exactly what the coaches see. Just in my opinion if I were an expert and a coach I might give him an extra look. Of course with O-line coaches like Joe Onosai and Chris Bisho seeing him on an everyday basis, we might be able to get their opinion and see how they feel about Kalepa’s potential. Haven’t done that so my opinion is strictly from what I see on film.

It appears when I read your posts that you appear to actually be on the inside, so I understand that what you are saying is probabaly what the coaches are saying. I’ve been known to be wrong before.

I said that Brent Rausch was going to beat out Greg Alexander to start for Hawaii. Wrong. I said that Steele Jantz was going to be the next Colt Brennan. Not even on the team anymore. So I’m williing to accept that my guesses can be wrong.

With that said, I still thnik that with the right coaching, Kalepa and Kaleikini have a bright future.

jeezy. I’m just a really old guy who likes to act like he knows the game. Excuse me if I don’t have as good an eye as some of you younger guys. Eyes aren’t as good as it used to be.

  144. jeezy33 December 20, 2010 11:41 am

We all have our share of being right and wrong. Steele Janz would have played somewhere for us if he stuck it out. Hell of an athlete. QB is just about shining when given the shot. I still believe Shane Austin is a LEGIT QB. Could be better than Moniz given the equal amount of reps.

With Kalepa situation, scout has him rated pretty high and i noticed UH wasnt recruiting him so i decided to watch 2 of his videos. After watching it, I wasn’t blown away which made is why I believe UH coaches aren’t in a hurry to offer him over other prospects at the moment. I could be wrong too but I know good O line coaches like to look for footwork when looking for tackles over 40 times and bench press.

What worries me most in the video is he tries so hard not to get beat outside that he lives inside swim or spin move wide open that a good DE would expose with ease.

But like you said, need to look down the road to see where he will be. I just think there are better prospects at the moment and we secured 3 nice o linemen so far.

Wes Schweitzer is the Tackle they want though.

  145. jeezy33 December 20, 2010 11:44 am

Haha now im starting to feel bad. Im just a recruiting fanatic who likes to watch a whole lot of video on our prospects and when we snag the good ones, its like Christmas, and when we get some head scratchers, I voice my opinion of that concern.

Right now, we are a top 25 team, so I will be a little more critical considering we should be able to elevate our recruiting.

    Hi Pride, and Liz!

    Pride,

With regard to your question about the treatment of bounceback athletes, I think they should be welcomed without prejudice of their previous decisions to attend an educational institution on the mainland. They should be allowed to compete for available positions as it may be. With regard to scholarships, I think the decision should rest with the coaching staff.

  176. NCAA December 20, 2010 1:32 pm

    Mr. SteveM,

You should go on twitter and let everyone know your microwave oven buying adventures.

  177. NorthShoreFan December 20, 2010 1:34 pm

It seems to me the Warriors would look at what positions these so called “bounce back” players will be filling, how they will fit in with the team, will their presence on the team improve the position, how do they fit with the current recruits or we may not need to recruit a particular position if they will fill it….etc. Me thinks there should not be a cut and dried policy but it should be made really clear that the door to Warriors Football is always open to the Sons on Hawaii if they chose to return.

Accountability and Academic priority is a must. Off/on campus misdeeds will not be tolerated.

  178. Pride. December 20, 2010 1:36 pm

Young men make a lot of missteps. (me wen make plenny way back den..still do now… sometmes..)

Warrior coaches seemed to have done a pretty good job of getting athletes who want to be here and are willing and able to live up to Warrior Standards. All they while molding a CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM!…AWESOME!

  183. NCAA December 20, 2010 1:44 pm

    Thanks Mr. Pride.

    Here’s my say:

Most everyone has said something derogatory that offended others and wish they could take it back. That being said, if coaches can forgive and let bygones be bygones, move forward in their quest to make Hawaii Football or any other UH sport to be the best they can be then by all means they should welcome a player back.

Naturally, there should be a need for the player. UH cannot welcome back everyone who wants to come back home.

  184. NCAA December 20, 2010 1:46 pm

Manti Teo wants to come back home?

  188. Bryson December 20, 2010 1:48 pm

I believe they should be welcomed back but not at the expense of a scholarship at least not right off the bat…they should have to work their way through the walk on program…

    Pride.:

    December 20th, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Midnight. What if these or a certain individual who wants to come home, made some derogatory comments about the Hawaii program when he originally comitted to the mainland school. Do we still allow him to come back…and on scholarship? especially if he is a very good player?

Absolutely NOT. You don’t allow a player to come to your team after making derogatory comments. It’s bad for team morale and it tells other recruits that you can make bad remarks then later turn around and you will be welcomed back. That’s why you don’t burn bridges, they should have learned that in high school. When I quit a job, I didn’t go and make comments about my boss because I knew that I might again see them one day.

    A Hurricane In Tulsa?

The origination of The University of Tulsa nickname – Golden Hurricane – came in 1922. A new football coach, Howard Acher, came to town and inherited a slew of nicknames dating back to 1895.

Past Tulsa teams were referred to as Kendallites, Presbyterians, Tigers, Orange and Black, and Tulsans. In the fall of 1922, the team nickname was “Yellow Jackets,” which was apparently due to the fact that the team was wearing new black and yellow uniforms instead of the traditional orange and black.

The team opened the season and it was apparent that Tulsa was going to have a great year, and trying to seize some publicity for his team, Acher wanted to find a new nickname quickly.

After a remark was made in practice one day about “roaring through opponents,” and because of their new jersey colors, he thought of Golden Tornadoes. However, he quickly found out that the name had been taken by Georgia Tech a few years earlier. From the tornado, he evolved meteorologically to the hurricane. A few days before the team left for a game against Texas A&M, Archer asked the squad to vote on the name, and thus “Golden Hurricane” was born.

    Hurricane Fight Song

    Down the Field to victory

    On Tulsa on.

Fight on University, Battle on and on.

March to the goal line, oh Tulsa,

    Score on mounting score.

March to the goal line, oh Tulsa,

    Let the Hurricane roar.

Drive those (opponent) back and back,

    On Tulsa on!

Gold, Blue, and Red, go right ahead,

    Down the field to victory!

    Hail To Tulsa (Alma Mater)

    Hail to thee Alma Mater,

    Gold and Blue,

Praise from thy sons and daughters,

    Old and new.

    Pride in our hearts,

    Our voices let us raise,

    Filled with devotion

    We will sing thy praise.

    Alma Mater, now we honor,

    Loyal, always true,

We will lift our voice in chorus.

    Hail to Tulsa U!

  210. Pride. December 20, 2010 2:03 pm

    #208 – I think #197 was a joke.

  211. Pride. December 20, 2010 2:05 pm

#212 – Thanks for that . Now it makes sense.

  212. Midnight December 20, 2010 2:07 pm

    I believe you NSF! LOL

  213. rage777 December 20, 2010 2:07 pm

Well maybe I should clarify. I can forgive and forget if the remark was about a person/coach or an individual. But if you talk bad about the entire football team, the university, or Hawaii, then screw you. If the kid wanted to go to UH, but UH didn’t offer him a scholarship and then said some choice words, I might forgive that also because he wanted to go to UH. But making bad comments is a major disrespect in my book and I don’t tolerate disrespect. I didn’t think people from Hawaii tolerated disrespect, but times may have changed or you don’t see it as disrespect.

  214. NorthShoreFan December 20, 2010 2:08 pm

#212..huh?….still no make sense…not sure what other choices the team had?…choice of one?..

  215. madeinhawaii December 20, 2010 2:08 pm

Maybe it’s a misspelling for … hurry canes … something used to help their playters off the field.

  216. townieone December 20, 2010 2:12 pm

#212 – Thanks, I was wondering about that.

  217. Pride. December 20, 2010 2:13 pm

We should make a football team and call them the Tsaiko Lolo’s. Just like the New Mexico Lobos.

  218. A-House December 20, 2010 2:13 pm

    Pride:

would like to add my opinion – I believe Coach Mack has an “open” policy on taking players who went to the mainland and wants to come home – “case-by-case” basis – a heck of a lot depends on what transpired before the student athlete made his choice – some left with the knowledge that Coach Mack said if they want to return he would find a place for them.

if the player really “burnt his bridges” on his way out, it would be very difficult for Coach Mack and his staff to now take the player – if they do, individual comes in as a “walk-on” and let his actions speak loud and clear – peers/teammates will be watching him very closely and probably let the coaches know how the returnee is doing

i can remember a certain player, cannot remember his name, that really slammed Coach Mack and his staff during the recruiting process making statements which deeply hurt several coaches – i don’t know if Coach Mack will take this person back.

  219. NCAA December 20, 2010 2:14 pm

    #216,

Thanks for your clarification. We all have opinions and decisions to make and sometimes it rubs someone the wrong way. I’m still learning to just turn the other cheek because making a big deal is not worth it.

I don’t know – there is a reference in the Bible to the prodigal son.

To err is human, to bounce back is unforgivable????

  226. Midnight December 20, 2010 2:23 pm

    Sorry UKU, not UHU

  227. Derek December 20, 2010 2:23 pm

Kamalu Umu played at Charleston Southern and then transferred back to UH. Is Eastman playing for UH next year? If so, didn’t he go to Weber St. first? My feeling is that if a player want to experience going to the mainland, go! Some guys have great careers, some don’t. That’s life. Tyson Alualu made a good decision to play for California. Maybe, Jonathan Mapu who went to Tenneessee didn’t have as great a career as he thought we would be. There is nothing wrong playng at the University of Hawaii. It is a great university as are at a lot of universities. Prestige is one thing. What you get out of the school and what you learned and how much you mature as a man is what’s most important. If you’re a local recruit getting a full scholarship at UH is big time. Just ask a walk-on to play for UH and plays well enough to earn a scholarship like Torres and even Rich Miano who started as a walk-on. It means so much. Ask Blaze Soares what it means to get a scholarship and then get a bachelor’s degree. Why? Because the University of Hawaii represents the entire State and all of the people. It is just one big “OHANA.” Being ranked #24 is great. But being #10, being undefeated 12-0, being in the BCS at the Sugar Bowl, being written in song by Mr Parker “Hawaii’s Warriors” in 2007, having a Holy Grail (Colt Brennan), well, as you can imagine people just go crazy over our team. Evidenced by over 10,000 people willing to support the team in New Orleans. Evidenced by over 15,000 people, even more going to Las Vegas to see our Warriors play UNLV in that little Silver Bowl, called Sam Boyd Stadium and blow our money in the casinos. We love it, because one day, we will hit the jackpot!!!! To this day, I still remember being at the UH-BYU game at Aloha Stadium and the announcement of the starting players. When Micah Matsuzaki’s name as BYU’s starting receiver was announced he was booed loudly. I mean, I felt sorry for him. People were booing because he decided to play for BYU and Hawaii fans wanted him to play for Hawaii. Not to mention BYU-Hawaii was a big, big rivalry. Hawaii fans have a long memory. You play for the other guys, you da enemy, brudda. That’s the way it is. And where is Micah Matsuzaki today?

  228. NorthShoreFan December 20, 2010 2:32 pm

    Micah who?….forgot that name already..

Anyhoo, Ryan “The Beast” Eastman is back at Weber. Too bad things didn’t work out here. Would have loved to watch him play for the Warriors. His is a different situation. Looking forward to reading some good things about that young man next season.

  229. Kazz December 20, 2010 2:34 pm

Local people do NOT forget being disrespected.

Being disrespected is a big NO-NO and any justification of it only supports the weakness of the individual that made in infraction.

One flaw we local people have is sometimes not expressing our feelings of being disrespected directly to the face of the individual that causes the grief.

    Still, local people NEVER FORGET.

One should NEVER disrespect anyone, especially in a small population where you will never know when you will need the assistance of someone that floats in the same circles of the person you offended.

I hear gossip alot whether people want to admit to it or not. I for one have never gotten deep into the game of gossip and I feel bad for those that look for it.

  230. Kazz December 20, 2010 2:35 pm

UH should campaign on a theme thaT suggest be a part of something new. With that in mind bring in the old guys and have them help create that buzz. It would benefit everyone and give a second chance. In terms of disrespect, well I’m sure I have had my fair share and when you are young you tend to do it often. I would look at if they have learned from the mistake.

  241. madeinhawaii December 20, 2010 2:55 pm

If a player goes to a mainland D1 school to play they usually have to sit out a year after they return. Somehow, I don’t think it’s fair for the team or other players to use a scholarship for that kind of red shirt year. If, however, the same D1 player transfers to a JC , takes care of business and applies to return, then fine. Or, if the player went directly to a JC or lower division and wants to come back, I’d say let’s take a good look at him.

Open door policy is fine.. but an open door policy with a scholarship at anytime.. I’m not too fond of.

There is HUMAN liability with regards to financial loss.

I remember a few years back, a top Hawaii high school senior, on the Hawaii news at the LOI signing chose a mainland school and yelled out “yeah Hawaii junk” or something similar. He returned to play for Hawaii in his senior year. He was a running back. Didn’t get too much playing time and wasn’t much of an impact player. I don’t know if he got a scholarship at UH. I don’t know if he graduated either.

  294. Slugger December 20, 2010 4:40 pm

    midnight,

It didn’t rain while I was in the garden. Sweating from digging. Guess a warm shower will help… I’m just a ‘dirtbag’ hahaha! Thanks for the thought. Now, if I were on the mainland, I’d be dressing warmly, even though I used to sweat buckets shoveling snow. I don’t miss that…

That’s why I appreciate being able to walk to practice here. Have to take advantage of living in a warm clime while you can.

Hawai’i, we have gathered within thy wide-flung doors,

    As sons and daughters claiming thy freely offered stores;

Our loyal praise we tender, and pledge to hold thy aim,

Till ocean’s far horizons shall hear thy honored name.

Local kids should word their disdain carefully.

For us born here. Hawai’i makes us what we are.

Like it or not, that Green and White represents US in the field of competition on a national basis.

“Auwe” to the ignorant and foolish.

All those punks wearing the “F” Hawaii and “Wuck the Farriors” shirts with the Notre Dame logo on the front are the definition of “haole” with all of it’s negativity WITHOUT the ethnic undertones.

You do NOT have to be of caucasian blood to be “haole”. Any local of any race with disrespect to the land that raised them can be a “haole”.

  330. Kazz December 20, 2010 6:47 pm

    “Return To Glory”.

Das sum strong words right there.

    Justification pending.

It’s in the hands of our coaches and our Warriors on Friday afternoon. It’s a big game, this is BIGGER than any BCS Bowl.

Like I previously mentioned a week ago:

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this Hawaii Bowl is going to be the MOST meaningful one in a while… maybe ever.

    -We’re nationally ranked again.

    -We’re 2010 WAC Champs.

-***OUR SUCCESS VALIDATES OUR INVITE INTO THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE.***

For those that haven’t read other message boards, but oodles and oodles of other MWC fans and WAC fans have been singing the praises of UH Warrior Football over the past three months. Fans from other MWC programs have been calling UH football a “quality” program when referencing our value to the MWC.

The stage is set. A nationally televised bowl game. THE ONLY BOWL GAME ON DECEMBER 24TH!!!

    Who wants to choke?

Who’s the Warrior that is not going to be playing for his brothers in GREEN???

Who are the coaches that will take responsibility for failure?

    The answer should be “NONE”.

Too much to lose. Too many times we’ve had the pundits of college football dish out some crumbs of respect only for US to step on it and erase any kind of promise.

Coach Mack said we’d kick Notre Dame’s okoles. Well, quite frankly he LIED. I haven’t said this publically in over two years, but damnit, he lied. I FELT LIED TO. I don’t care that it was Jimmy effin Clausen we lost to or Michael effin Floyd. WE GOT OUR OKOLES KICKED BY

    A MEDIOCRE 6-6 TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!

    UNACCEPTABLE!!!!

Now is the chance. I feel like something bigger than all of us has been looking out for this team and for this entire athletic department over the past 12 months.

The resurrection of Warrior volleyball, the national emergence of Rainbow Wahine softball, the return of a WAC title to Rainbow Baseball, the glory of the gold captured by Amber Kaufman, and the roaring defiance of Warrior football that refused to finish without a WAC title all in one year! The one freakin year were we questioned and feared for our existence in NCAA Division I athletics. THE ONE YEAR we experienced top to bottom success only to flirt with the possibility of it becoming another memento to place in a time capsule that could have been buried with memories of what UH athletics “USED” to be.

No matter the assurances of “done deals”, there were instances were our future could have been non-existent. This is fact. There was a time were no matter what our student-athletes did and what the coaches accomplished, the mainland would look with a glance and go on their merry way.

Now we have the attention of people. We survived conference realignment for the foreseeable future and we STILL must prove ourselves.

Let the haters hate, but we no longer can afford to keep giving them reasons.

START STRONG! FINISH STRONG!!! NO MORE “MAKE IT A GOOD GAME”-TYPE WISHES. MUST WIN!!! MUST WIN!!!

I don’t care what Tulsa’s coach says. He’s young and saying all the right things, but he doesn’t have what we have on the line.

While he’s making his ascent to success, we are closer to the top.

    WE MUST VALIDATE OUR ASPIRATIONS!!!

DON’T BELIEVE IN IT, T-A-K-E WHAT WE WANT AND WE WANT TO WIN!!!! STEP OVER AND ON WHOEVER IT TAKES!!! NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!! HIT HARD AND DESTROY THEN APOLOGIZE LATER.

    TAKE YOUR RESPECT!!!!!!!!!

WHO WANTS TO LOOK LIKE FRESNO STATE??? AUWE!!!!! A MWC INVITE AND NADA!!!!!

WE CANNOT BE LIKE FRESNO STATE.

FORGET PLAYING FOR THE WAC!!! PLAY FOR OURSELVES!!!

    WE MUST WIN THIS GAME!!!

    PROTECT THIS HOUSE!!!

  331. Kazz December 20, 2010 6:54 pm

I know local braddahs and get enough local braddahs on this Warrior team ready fo die to win.

Forget “Aloha” for one day. When you shake the hand of the opposing team to start the game during the coin toss, make sure you look at them and make them realize that the sky over Halawa is the last thing they see before they get carried into the ambulance.

Sorry, but —- is about to get real.

This is not “just a game”.

The world is not a peaceful place. Do what you must to survive. Look after yourself and the ones you care about and let the others destroy themselves.

how does one describe a football player as the “holy grail”?

Christainity describes it as the cup Jesus drank from at the last supper – DaVinci Code’s holy grail was the last living decendant of Jesus (who happenend to be a female cop).

this phrase does not exist in my religion therefore, i will need to see who becomes the “holy grail” and jot down all those tangible and intangible characteristics so i know when i see the next “holy grail”.

first, “the quest for the holy grail” as i have announced and referred to on this blog is attributed to me, so don’t go beating down on the others.

second, you must have caught on by now that quite often i speak in metaphorical rhetoric and even the use of subliminal message underlie my style.

oh, a metaphor is; “the use to describe somebody or something of a word or phrase that is not meant literally but by means of a vivid comparison expresses something about him, her, or it, e.g. saying that somebody is a holy grail.”

so, in this respect the holy grail is, in my opinion, the next colt brennan (moniz is another) who will carry this warrior team. when i say we always need to recruit the holy grail, i mean that in recruiting we must also keep looking for the quarterback who is so skilled that he will make effective the rest of the movable parts of this team.

the holy grail therefore, is like the cog in the wheel, the straw that stirs the drink, the micro chip in the computer.

  372. LizKauai -iPad December 20, 2010 9:32 pm

The Holy Grail could be the secret to prosperity. From the film Excalibur – the secret is the same secret I embrace. “The land and the king are one”. Similar to the Hawaii state motto. In olden days, kings viewed their responsibilities over their lands as a bestowal from God and expected to be obeyed and supported. When personal desires and ego took over, there was a disconnect and the land fell into famine and the people suffered.

Thus the quest for the Grail.

The Warriors are ONE. That is their secret. That is their Grail. Egos and individual desires must be under control at all times and put to service for the TEAM’s sake.

Then with the whole become greater than it’s parts. Unstoppable.

    GO WARRIORS!

    bounce back players…

every local boy who goes away for what ever reason should be given a second chance at bouncing back at the university of hawaii. this is regardless of what the circumstances were at the time of his original recruitment. no questions asked.

first, this is a state university. this is the only state university in hawaii let alone the only venue for a student athlete to pursue an education as well as an opportunity to play college football.

second, no one coach should have the extreme power or authority to deny that resident of hawaii such an opportunity.

third, every student enrolled at the university of hawaii has the right to not only choose to become a student at our university but to also be given the right to participate in any curriculum or non-curriculum activity.

therefore, (to make it short because i could go on) any student, in particular a resident of this state of hawaii should have the right to enroll in our only state university and be given the fair opportunity to tryout/participate in any athletic or other extra curricular activity. no one person should stand in that young man/woman’s way of equal opportunity to pursue such a goal.

furthermore, every person should be given a second chance in life for all endeavors. no one one coach or administrator should deny this. it is a basis of Christianity that second chance or forgiveness be honored. we forget that this nation was formed with Christian principles in mind.

    “one nation under God….”

    …nuff said.

Never mistake “opportunity” for “right” or “reality”. You are correct in saying everyone should have the opportunity…it’s something we should strive for. However, reality tells us that only so many people can get into college. Only so many spots are open on any given sports team. Only so much food is available to feed people because the distribution process is not equitable. Coaches are paid to make choices on who are to be on the teams. Second chance and forgiveness play minor roles…we hope. Love you man…sounds like a heckuva day tomorrow for you folks. Makes those seniors happy!

…Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda completed his game plan a week ago. The practices have been designed to help the players “work on details.”

“The guys are locked in,” Aranda said. “They feel their best efforts are going to be needed on Friday. They didn’t mind the weather. They had a good practice.”

Linebacker Corey Paredes said: “Even though it was raining hard, we were focused. … We really want to win this game.”

  445. Pride. December 21, 2010 4:47 am

According to Scout dot com, there were about 76 Hawaii high school football players that made committments to play football right out of high school. 46 went to mainland schools and 30 stayed home to play for Hawaii.

Of the 46 that committed to play on the mainland, 9 went to NFL camps. Of that nine, seven made it onto NFL rosters.

Of the 30 kids that committed to Hawaii, 10 went to NFL camps, of the ten, two made it onto NFL rosters.

Mainland – 19% made it to an NFL camp and 15% made an NFL team.

Hawaii – 33% made it to an NFL camp and 6.6% made an NFL team.

It is obvious by looking at the numbers that a player is more likely to get a tryout in the NFL if they were to play for Hawaii rather than a mainland school.

  446. mctruck December 21, 2010 5:37 am

    Pride, ur #448……

Mahalo for dat stats….hope many local players reading that and consider those stats if they have playing on the next level.

Hope they also become aware that education is important because a small percentage of players, no matter what school they go to become NFL players.

To Juda Parker and other big time local recruits:

Remember one thing. No one remembers the big time recruits who left Hawai’i for the likes of Oregon State. Their careers are done and they are forgotten by the people of Hawai’i. But even the walk-ons who stayed home are remembered forever by the people of Hawai’i.

Over half of the Warriors are locals who stayed home to represent. If more big time recruits stayed home, we’d be even better. Everybody cheered when Nate Jackson layed that huge hit on that QB from Sana Lui who left to play for Washington. I forget his name.

Think of all the guys who go away and then transfer back to UH. The grass isn’t greener in America.

Something to think about. Coach always said, “Stay home.”

Todd Graham, Golden Hurricane’s head coach, speaking about his no-huudle offense,

“It is a breathtaking scheme designed to leave opposing defenses gasping”.

Graham added, “To do that, we run a fast-paced, no-huddle (offense). We practice like that, therefore our kids are in better shape. It takes two, three years to get in shape to run this system”…..that may explain Hawaii’s no-hurry-to-practice schedule…heck, we only had 15-days alloted to prepare, not, two to three years. According to Mac and Aranda, seven-days is good enuff to get the “details” straight! Right?

Zune and iPod: Most men and women compare the Zune to your Touch, but immediately after seeing how slim and surpr isingly small and mild it is, I consider it to be a rather exceptional hybrid that combines qualities of the two the Touch along with the Nano. It will be really colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels really a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as a lot, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, though being just a hair thicker.

Personally, I’m not a fan with the Aol rebrand. When the execution and implementation are very good, the precise wordmark is boring, uninspired, and just type of blah. That currently being stated, I concur with most of the other rankings. I’m still in like with the city of Melbourne is new identity.

interesting overview of logos, but, far more fascinating comments. identities usually are not built by logos alone, but by their place inside of a larger set of collateral. no logo is an island and none need to be totally judged in isolation of your way they may be put to use.

How d isappointing! With just a few exceptions I come to feel really let down by what you call the perfect and worst of 2009. Using the exception of Melbourne is logo almost all the remaining I would be ashamed to set in my portfolio had I designed them. There once again I did notso I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Properly, not to repeat the hating on aol, but th is is likely the most d isappointing l ist thus far. On equally sides. How can El Banco Deuno and aol be on the best l ist, and then bash art directors club? I really did nothave an issue with that redesign, as well as the collateral was looking quite excellent. You know what really should have been around the l ist for worst logos? New York Philharmonic logo. My hatred of that logo burns in my chest to th is day. The identify with the designer behind that logo is the only motive for any of its good results. The top l ist the 12 months is pretty mediocre for me.I like Mary Shu is remark about her alternatives for that most effective l ist a little much better.

I assume Aol. Really should be both the best as well as worst from the year. It’s the very best, since yes, it will be observed one of the most. It also does set a future for the brand, very distinct from their previous as Internet, Inc. It really is also pretty creative; it can be quite distinctive. It should be the worst although since the execution is terrible. The idea, on the other hand is artistic, just sucks. There may be little or no cons istency, as well as wordmark bores me.
