    Oh My God!

This is so funny Mr. Tsai, how in God’s earth does an “American Idol” Camile Velasco card fit into the mix?

I dying laughing over here, and my goodness, a young Sid Fernandez, that seems like so long ago.

Good morning all, what a good laugh so early in the day!

    Confession: I’m cleaning house.

The T-shirts are new (although Pilares’ shirt was in a bag in my car for a week, and people were sitting on it, which is why it’s wrinkled).

Recap of our Warrior Nation group experience last season:

UW game in Seattle last Sept. 10:

We had almost 150 UH fans in our group & our Discount tickets were $42 each (UH ticket office’s price was $75) and we had way better seats in the 45 yard line upper deck (sect. 47) in the shade, with awesome views of Mr. Rainier & Lake Washington. The UH section was in the DIRECT SUN all game; west end zone (sections 4 & 6, 8 & 10) & 40-50 yards from the field.

This gives you a good idea of the both our views in Husky stadium.

    http://www.gohuskies.com/recruits/huskystadium.html

San Jose St. game last Oct. 14:

Our group had 50 yard line seats in Section 130; behind our Warriors bench, at $25 each–group rate–we had 200+ Warrior fans sitting in these 20 rows, from row 1 to 21. You can’t get any better seats at any other stadium. The UH sections was in the corner end zone (section 134 and 135) and those were $45 each.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

  73. Wes'side Warrior July 17, 2012 8:27 am

Made the drive once from L.A. to Vegas. Wasn’t too happy about the trip. We had a gig in Hollywood on a Thursday, and had a 4-day weekend following. So, we decided to trip to Vegas for the weekend. We left at the wrong time… about 7pm (rush hour traffic), hoping to arrive at the Cal by midnight. Luckily, we were in a friend’s car, and gas was cheap back then. We arrived at about 1:30am… ate and played on some machines the whole morning until check-in time.

Notice I said we did that once? Never again!

I hope to never be on LA’s highways any time near rush hour.

I will probably fly if I make that trip again.

    I now hate slot machines.

    I’ve given up cigarettes.

Sorry, ST… what was it you wanted to know?

  74. Wes'side Warrior July 17, 2012 8:29 am

I think McTruck’s suggestion is good. Although I haven’t been out to LA or Vegas in quite a few years now, I’d probably leave just after morning rush hour. That way you miss rush hour in both LA and Vegas. Just hope it won’t be too hot!

  75. Wes'side Warrior July 17, 2012 8:33 am

You guys hear of that shooting in a club just west of UofAlabama?

When I first heard it, they said it was a bar on campus. Man! What’s going on?

Hope everyone heals up good. Couple are critical, I think.

Being in LA, I can tell you what we do: either leave at 4am, 11am or post 9pm. Either way, get the room for that day/night. Costs more, but it’s worth it to just check-in and sleep.

Other option: fly. And check the other airports: Long Beach, Burbank, etc. Sometimes the airlines, like Southwest or Jet Blue, run specials.

He will also be coaching the Dline for the Kalani Falcons.

He also does a tremendous job helping Barrett Awai at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

Very busy guy. He recently took a group of local youths to minister to the youth at Tua’s old stomping grounds in the California Hood.

If you google “best time to drive to vegas from la” you will get a ton of advice.

Never leave on a Friday or return on a Sunday really sticks out as a general consensus.

Leaving LA very early morning hours is suggested a lot .

I-10 to I-15 most suggested route.

    Really good observation, truegreen!

ST once explained the selection system– Avis picks by generating random post numbers. Any qualifying entry on or nearest that number is the winner. Thus multiple names will not help — it is best to use your name throughout the day as many times as you want 🙂

    ST,

Depends on what part of LA you are at. If you can get around major traffic (certain less-traveled roads), leave about 6 or 7 a.m. (or earlier) so you can arrive around noon. You don’t want to be on I-15 in the middle of the desert in the afternoon.

ST – Don’t need the prizes, but here’s a little travel advice to Sin City. Agree with most above about avoiding heading there on a Friday and driving back Sunday. DO NOT hit any eastbound lanes (10 or 210) to the 15N after 2 pm. DO NOT plan on getting back to LA in rush hour (don’t leave Vegas at 5 or 6 a.m. and expect to catch a late morning flight out of LAX. Just pay the $120 round trip air fare from LAX and save yourself a lot of grief.

Everytime I drive to vegas from orange county the average drive time is around 4 hours for 270 miles, if…there are no accidents, I leave before 9 am on Fridays, I drive 80 mph and not higher to avoid all the CHP cars on the road and draft off big rigs so they block the view of the cops down the road. Other than that, enjoy the view of the desert and observe all the weird stuff that is out there. Its actually pretty out there.

Oh wait… wrong structure on lower campus.

I mean, why whould anyone want to go to a ground-breaking of a delay?

Getting ready for the upcoming season by making a DVD of the last game against BYU. Yes, it wasn’t the Warriors best performance, but many of the underclassmen will be counted on to contribute this season.

Anyone wanting the DVD, let me know. I still owe Tom Mui a bunch of DVDs from last season.

    *Trumpet Sounds*

    From hawaiiathletics.com:

    7/17/2012 2:07:00 PM

HONOLULU – A generous gift from The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation will help transform the University of Hawai’i at Manoa’s only on-campus, all-purpose track and field, football, soccer and recreational facility into its more fully realized potential as a dynamic center for student activity.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday on the grounds of the new Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. Dignitaries including Governor Neil Abercrombie and UH Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple were on hand for the official blessing and ‘o’o ceremony.

Construction of the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex will begin in July 2012, and will rise as a new three-story building on the mauka side of the existing Clarence T.C. Ching Field. The facility will support a wide variety of activities and events, and will provide grandstand seating for approximately 2,500 fans.

The interior of the building will include offices, locker rooms and a meeting room for women’s soccer, cross country, track and field, and sand volleyball. The complex will also include a sand volleyball venue with 800 seats and two competition courts. In addition, lofted space for future facilities, such as concessions, a ticket office and broadcast booths, will be provided.

The Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex will be a LEED Certified Building. It is scheduled for completion in Winter 2013. The entire complex will seat approximately 4,100.

Clarence T.C. Ching, born on Kaua’i in 1912, was a real estate developer, banker, affordable housing pioneer and philanthropist. The 1932 Saint Louis School alumnus became well known for developing the areas around Honolulu Airport, Salt Lake, Moanalua, Fort Shafter and Tripler Medical Center. He built Kukui Gardens, one of the largest affordable rental projects in the state, and actively served on a number of boards, school and community organizations.

The culmination of Clarence Ching’s dedication to Hawai’i and charitable generosity occurred in 1967, with the founding of The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation.

  196. Kevin July 17, 2012 2:03 pm

Perhaps with the current situations at UH athletics, they wanted the media coverage to be limited to avoid potential further inquiries into certain topics?

The classic “uhhh.. we’ll let you know what happens”.

They got that down PAT over there!!!

  197. Kevin July 17, 2012 2:08 pm

    Abercrombie and Apple…

Thanks to their dedication and hardwork in initiating this deal in the first place…

  208. Kevin July 17, 2012 2:37 pm

  258. HawaiiMongoose July 17, 2012 6:41 pm

The new renderings are considerably less attractive than the originals in my opinion. The main structure is institutional-looking, blocky and ugly. It’s a shame the architect couldn’t have done a better job.

  262. Capitolist/WassupDoc July 17, 2012 7:25 pm

A quick link to Ian Lind’s blog: http://ilind.net/ Top post today is about Greenwood and UH athletics. Very disturbing.

Stephen: Could you follow up on what Ian’s found out?

DrDoc and I are almost finished with our first massive clearnout in over 14 years. We gave away a ton of STUFF to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Thrift Shop, the Windward Boys & Girls Club & the Salvation Army along with several hundred pounds of recycled STUFFto a variety of NGOs and government agencies.

We are still trying to deal with the extra-large custom-made dog house & dog carrier. I just cannot bring myself to put it out for Bulky Item Pickup next Monday.

  263. SteveM July 17, 2012 7:28 pm

  267. tom mui July 17, 2012 7:36 pm

    #258 HawaiiMongoose:

I agree – the original rendering seems more “Hawaii-Territorial” architecture.

The new one isn’t very inspiring – like a block house and I wonder with the Manoa rain whether the flat roof is appropriate.

  268. tom mui July 17, 2012 7:38 pm

    #249 Kevin:

Don’t know what Tom Apple is like – but Chancellor Henshaw is one terrific lady and certainly was a great cheerleader for Hawaii athletics

    ST,

If departing from anywhere near LAX or downtown LA on a weekday, recommend leaving between 10 AM and 1 PM (12 PM noon on Fridays).

If departing from the OC on a weekday, recommend leaving between 10 AM and 2 PM (1 PM on Fridays).

From LA, also recommend that you don’t take any pitstops until you at least reach Victorville…..but Barstow is the more typical pitstop if you can hold out long enough.

Don’t forget to take notice of Zzyzx Road between Barstow and Vegas.

If driving during the day, recommend driving at least a mid-sized car. Otherwise, you might have to turn on the heater to cool off the engine instead of running the AC to cool you off from the summer heat. Tougher on the car driving back to LA, since gotta climb 2 rises right outside of Vegas.

If driving at night….especially on a Friday night, just follow the red tail lights of the rest of the “sinners” on their way to “hell”. BUT make sure your washer fluid is full so that you can clean your windshield from all that bug platter at night.

Kinda cool pic… I saw this on twitter. Our 4 star secondary hanging out. I don’t know if it’s the angle or what but JT Turner looks huge next to Grimes and Edwards… Hopefully Dorsey can join that group in August…

  311. Garret July 18, 2012 2:52 am

    ST,

I’m actually driving my wife and kids to Vegas from San Diego this weekend (celebrating my 11th wedding anniversary with Lori) and next weekend (to see Momo, Mrs. Momo, and my sister’s family). We cannot leave early enough on Friday and my kids cannot stay up that late, so we leave early Saturday instead of Friday afternoon/evening. We did the Friday drive once and that was enough for us.

  312. Garret July 18, 2012 2:57 am

Very interesting blog entry by Ian Lind. It sounds like the lines over control and decision making are blurring at UH, and this started quite some time ago with Greenwood. Greenwood might want to pick an AD and JD’s expiring contract and the concert controversy gives an opening to take further control by installing their own AD.

  315. Wes'side Warrior July 18, 2012 3:25 am

    Morning, everyone!

Here’s another interview with Bryant Moniz, just completed and posted by the Force:

    http://www.georgiaforce.com/news/in-the-news/inside_look_bryant_moniz/

  316. Wes'side Warrior July 18, 2012 3:34 am

For those that missed the game (or want to catch it again to see how many passes the receivers dropped or didn’t adjust to… or missed calls by the refs… hahaha!) between the Georgia Force (Bryant Moniz) and the Pittsburgh Power (Mike Washington), it’s now posted on Ustream:

    http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/23994299

Although a disappointing game for us Georgia fans, it was good to see UH represented by a couple of outstanding young men!

Bruddah Brandon was also interviewed during the game. I stood behind, holding a sign.

  317. BigHiloFan2 July 18, 2012 3:47 am

    Dang

JT looks huge</b) standing next to Grimes and Edwards.

  318. Pomai July 18, 2012 4:36 am

#312 – Garret – That has been the plan for a long time, the acting AD has wanted the job for a long time and he is connected to the President and not the chancellor or the chancellor before him, who IMHO was pushed out by the President and her HUI. And people wonder why UH runs the way they do.
