Iceman trades football for futbol

Dan “Iceman” Kelly is prepared to transfer to Cal Baptist, where he will play soccer this fall.
Kelly completed his UH football eligibility following the 2008 Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl.
But because he never redshirted, he still has eligibility at an NAIA school in another sport. Kelly said he has sent his transcripts to Cal Baptist.

At yesterday’s Pro Day was former UH linebacker Victor Santa Cruz, now a coach at Azusa Pacific.

  5. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2009 5:59 am

I kind of like the NAIA’s way. I mean, you get four years to play. They don’t have to be within a strict window.
That’s pretty much how many students approach college. Sometimes you need a break to do other things; sometimes there are family or financial obligations. Not sure why the meter has to always run.

    ST and Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

“futbol”? what language is this? I have seen it before in other stories about soccer but cannot figure out if it is Italian or Spanish…I think in German it is “Fussball”.

The Sacramento Bee mentioned UH’s Pro Day.

Hawaii held its pro day today in Carson, Ca., reasoning that the school could take advantage of the horde of NFL scouts and coaches who were in the neighborhood a day earlier for USC’s pro day. The 49ers were represented by David McCloughan, the team’s director of college scouting. Perhaps the most intriguing prospect was David Veikune, a 257-pound defensive end the 49ers likely would convert to an outside linebacker, a la Parys Haralson, Manny Lawson and Jay Moore. NFL Draft Scout has Veikune going somewhere in the third or fourth rounds. Veikune looked good at the Senior Bowl in January.

  17. Garret April 3, 2009 6:19 am

    This Nevada paper is dreaming…

This Nov. 27, the Friday after Turkey Day, the Wolf Pack football team will take on the hated Boise State Broncos in what could be the biggest game in Nevada history. A nine-game losing streak against the hated Boise Boys should be enough to get the Wolf Pack excited to go to Boise. But how does an 11-0 Wolf Pack record going into the game sound with visions of a BCS bowl game dancing in your head.

Hey, it’s April. It’s OK to dream, right? The Pack opens its season at Notre Dame and Colorado State before debuting at home against Missouri. That’s three wins right there. Notre Dame hasn’t been Notre Dame since Lou Holtz left South Bend. Colorado State lost its top running back (Gartre Johnson) and quarterback (Billy Farris) off last year’s team. Missouri is starting over with 59 freshmen and just one senior on its roster. After that comes very winnable games against UNLV, Louisiana Tech. Utah State, Idaho, Hawaii, San Jose State, Fresno State and New Mexico State. That makes the Pack 11-0 for the first time since 1991, heading to Boise on a tryptophan high. A perfect 12-0 regular season is there for the taking. The Pack will be the Utah of 2009. Dare to dream, Pack fans.

  18. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2009 6:19 am

Kelly comes off the books, anyway.
Plus, he wasn’t enrolled in UH this semester.
Because his GPA is over 2.6, he won’t cost UH any APR points.
So, all around, it’s a good move for everybody. Except reporters. We’re going to miss his witty comments.

  19. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2009 6:20 am

Notice Gary Patek has the shaka down.

  20. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2009 6:23 am

Rich2176 was supposed to meet us for breakfast.
    But, hey, it was early.
So we both pretended to have groggy what-time-is-it morning voices on the phone.

  21. Garret April 3, 2009 6:24 am

A Notre Dame player saw a dollar bill on the field during the Hawaii Bowl.

Senior safety Sergio Brown: “I found a dollar in Hawaii on the field. That was ridiculous. The play was going to start and the dollar was running across the field so I picked it up and put it in my girdle. Then the trainer came up to me after the play and saw me pick it up and he was like ‘Gimme that dollar’ so I gave it to him. It was during the game, after halftime. I guess there was a lot of stuff going on. I guess that’s the most ridiculous thing I saw on a football field and it happened to me. “

  22. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2009 6:25 am

Now Rich2176 complained he had a sore throat.
He assured me it had nothing to do with the world premier of the Hannah Montana movie being shown across the street from the party he attended.
Of course, I’d scream myself silly if the Bangles (OK, Susannah Hoffs) were across the street.

  23. Garret April 3, 2009 6:26 am

This writer complains about the confetti at Aloha Stadium. He also doesn’t seem to realize that Notre Dame played in the Hawaii Bowl…

One of the aspects of games in Aloha Stadium I didn’t mention when I wrote about the lovable quirkiness of Hawaii football last month was the fact — possibly of interest only to me — that the field seems to be strewn with little bits of trash (often swirling) at all times. It’s one of those things you see on TV every now and then, but is so obscure, nearly unverifiable and otherwise un-commented upon that you wonder if it’s even a valid observation. In this case, I’m convinced, it is — check out the huge volume of debris on the turf in this otherwise tedious clip of Notre Dame’s Aloha Bowl win on Christmas Eve:

  24. Garret April 3, 2009 6:28 am

I’d choose to see the Bangles over Hanna Montana. My wife and kids have never heard of Hanna Montana, so I think they would actually go along with that.

  25. Mr Colomaohana April 3, 2009 6:29 am

    Happy Aloha Friday

  26. Garret April 3, 2009 6:29 am

    ST,

At least Rich will be in Hawaii in a couple of months. I’m hoping that Ronnie sets up a Calf Call that I can attend so that I can see him then, or I might actually end up seeing him more in Hawaii than in California this year.

  27. djmitcho April 3, 2009 6:36 am

Well, the Spokane Shock play their first regular season game tonight and as far as I can tell it looks like Hercules Satele is sticking with the team. He is listed as the only FB and actually has a number assigned to him on the shock website. I hope he gets to start.

  28. djmitcho April 3, 2009 6:39 am

Also I will post an update from the game later tonight. Hopefully Herc gets some touches near the goal line tonight

  29. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2009 6:42 am

I’m not sure I’m a fan of the confetti, but I am a fan of the confetti throwers. It’s amazing how far they can toss it.
It’s better than realizing: Hey, that’s my cut-up story floating in the air.

  42. Rich2176 April 3, 2009 8:28 am

    Happy Friday to all…

Yes, I told ST last night that I’d drive to LAX and meet him & the Princess for breakfast. When I woke up, I had a really sore throat/sinus problem. I sounded a lot worse than ST. The party I attended was right across the street from the world premiere of the Hannah Montana movie, so Hollywood Blvd. was shut down and traffic was a nightmare. I took the subway from Universal Studios to Hollywood. It cost $1.25 each way. I urge anyone who visits L.A. to check out the rail system. It’s really cool.

Great news about Iceman. I hope he makes it to the next level in FOOTBALL. I’m not sure what was with him last year ‘cuz he wasn’t nearly the same as in 2007.

  43. warriorfanny April 3, 2009 8:31 am

Lou Holtz left ND in 1996 and exited with a 8-3 record and no post season bowl.
Charlie went 9-2 in his 2005 debut and took his team to a BCS Bowl.

I like what what Lou Holtz said, “If you burn your neighbors house down, it doesn’t make your house look any better.”

The Irish finished strong in 2008, Nevada didnt.
South Bend is too taunting a task for the wolfpack, even with the WAC’s best QB.

The Irish have to improve in 2009, right? 🙂

  44. Colomaohana April 3, 2009 8:33 am

    Gooooood Morrrrrr-nenng, Tsai-ko Ohana!

Morning, Mr. Colomohana! Uh….no Jannabelle’s breakfast this morning?

  45. Garret April 3, 2009 8:48 am

    Princess,

I just finished watching all of the posted videos from Pro Day…once again, you did an amazing job! Thank you for your hard work and for bringing recognition to those deserving Warriors. It really is nice for Warrior fans to see the scenes from Pro Day and to get to hear interviews with those players where they talk about their performance.

It takes a LOT of work to get all the footage and cut it to produce those videos. I hope that management understands the great work that you do, as those videos keep us on the Advertiser website for quite a long time. Nobody else can match the video coverage you provided from the Pro Days this year and last year, and you even provided better video coverage than huge schools like Texas (with their first round draft pick possibilities) get.

  46. Garret April 3, 2009 8:50 am

    Advertiser advertising people:

Is it really effective to put the same commercial at the start of every video from the Princess? The people who watch one of the Pro Day videos will most likely watch all of them…I think the message gets less effective after so many repetitions.

  47. Garret April 3, 2009 8:52 am

    ST,

Thank you for your coverage of Pro Day, both in the blog yesterday and in your articles today. I’m glad you had one article on Keenan Jones and Jacob Patek–having Keenan there was a surprise so it was interesting to get his story, and it is *always* great to get news about Jake! I’m glad that he was able to do so much better this year and hope that he gets a chance to extend his playing career.

  48. warriorfanny April 3, 2009 8:58 am

Best wishes to Mike Trapasso tonite and his boyz-of-clutch.

On paper, the Spart’s team BA in contrast to our Bowz looks like a mis-match, except in the one category that matters most–getting hits, with two-outs and runners in scoring position.

    Go Bows!

  49. Colomaohana April 3, 2009 8:59 am

    Hi Garret!

  50. roysan16 April 3, 2009 9:05 am

Re-Do I think the WAC and ESPN slighted UH in giving UH lesser top billing and television exposure than other WAC teams? No, I don’t. And these are the reasons.

For UH these are the facts, no players on the All-Wac Freshmen team, and 1 returning All-Wac First Team player (Estes). Add to it that UH appearances last year on national television were bad, runaway losses to Florida, Oregon State and Notre Dame. With a roster with lesser proven players than the predominate WAC teams, last years history of big losses and the other WAC teams having a greater pool of star players wouldn’t this make sense to television executives and the WAC front office showcasing the teams that project to be at the top? I do. UH being left out or being slighted is untrue. The facts speak for them selves.

When ESPN scours the rosters and looks and dissects all of the WAC team’s rosters and the returning star players in the league for the 2009 season, do you think they see many from UH? No. Do they see Nevada with seven (+2 from the All-WAC freshmen team) , Boise with six (+5 from the All-WAC freshmen team) and Louisiana with 5 (+4 All-WAC Freshmen) as the predominate teams in the WAC with the most proven players? Yes, definitely. Compared to the aforementioned teams, what do they see as proven players or stars on UH roster…very little. Right? At least in comparison to the other top teams UH has less proven players–the other top teams do, and this is one reason UH, I think, wasn’t overlooked. Or dissed as others (UH fans) think. I mean think about it…Nevada has..gulp…7 returning all stars entering the 2009 football season amongst it’s 66 returning lettermen.. So it’s easy to understand why they have 5 dates with ESPN and UH has 2.

So subsequently, the teams that have the most star returning players should receive the most television exposure. Right? So, again, no I don’t think UH is being slighted by appearing in lesser ESPN games than Boise, Nevada and Louisiana Tech. The facts speak for themselves. If someone said if it would be surprising if UH finished 4th or 5th would that make them sound cynical? Maybe, especially if they’re a UH fan. But the television people and the WAC probably see UH as the 4th or 5th best team in the league…and I think they’re right. And showcasing ones that are 4th or 5th best at something has less of appeal and generates less interests than the ones projected ahead of UH, where the likelihood those teams at the forefront will generate more interests.. To me this makes sense.

As you looked at the players returning they’re are more of the star players on the other team’s rosters than that of UH. If your factor the players from the All-WAC freshmen teams the past few years, players that have one-two years of development and look at UH freshmen and second year players that have very little game experience experience there’s a huge gap there, too, compared to what other team have… So the bottom line is that UH has they’re work cut out for them–imo, next year’s going to be tough journey…and I hope UH’s inspiration offsets the other team’s experience and other team’s star type players and younger players that have greater experience than UH’s.

    Hi Colomaohana!

I hope that you have a great weekend!

My wife’s best friend (they were in King Inter and Castle High together) is about to leave us today (she stayed with us since Tuesday), which is really sad because she is so nice and my kids love her. My kids start Spring Break today so we have family activities planned every day for the next 10 days. It is weird that Hawaii’s Spring Break is over before ours even began.

If your factor the players from the All-WAC freshmen teams the past few years, players that have one-two years of development and look at UH freshmen and second year players that have very little game experience experience there’s a huge gap there, too, compared to what other team have… So the bottom line is that UH has they’re work cut out for them–imo, next year’s going to be tough journey…and I hope UH’s inspiration offsets the other team’s experience and other team’s star type players and younger players that have greater experience than UH’s

ESPN’s formula wants to showcase talent or team prolifics, a program winner or a colorful/controversal coach– That’s 3 strikes against UH (we had all 3 going in 2007)…time zone is also a factor if our AD is not flexible, dunno about JD but hermie turned down several proposals ostensibly becz of local time conflicts.

Ryan Mouton was singled out for praise when SI reviewed the Pro Day results around the country.

Ryan Mouton/DB/Hawaii: Mouton ran one forty during the Hawaii pro day on Thursday, timing in the low 4.4’s despite pulling his hamstring midway through the sprint, an injury he suffered at the combine. Earlier in the day Mouton posted a broad jump of 11 feet. Mouton is a real wild card in April’s draft and a cornerback who could be selected much earlier than people expect. He’s incredibly athletic and scouts love his potential.

    Veikune shows versatility
Defensive end David Veikune and CB Ryan Mouton were the headliners at Hawaii’s pro day and both showed well. Veikune, who did linebacker drills during the workout, is apparently confident in his ability to potentially transition to a two-point stance in a 3-4. Said Veikune: “I’m not going to lie, I’ve got hands.” Mouton ran a 4.42 before pulling a hamstring.

Analysis of Miami choosing Camarillo and Ginn as their starting WRs and leaving Bess to the #3 role. I don’t know why they would say that Camarillo would start today over Bess when Camarillo can’t even run today.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland says Greg Camarillo would be the club’s starting wideout opposite Ted Ginn if the season began today.

This is more indicative of how Miami views Davone Bess than Camarillo. They seem to envision Bess as strictly a slot receiver. Camarillo is coming off a torn meniscus and ACL. His status for training camp is questionable.

Recently, Kenny Patton made the all-wac frosh team, so did Sol.
That’s 1 for 2 in actual all-wac talent over the term of their career.
We have been recruiting JUCOs under MAC to fill gaps, especially in the secondary and our DL.

This Maryland Senator has introduced a bill to save the newspaper industry.

The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism reports that a typical metropolitan paper runs 70 stories a day, counting the national, local and business sections. In contrast, a half-hour of television news includes only 10 to 12 stories. Research shows that broadcast news follows the agenda set by newspapers, often repeating the same items with less detail. And newspaper reporters forge relationships with people; they build a network, which creates avenues to information.

But America is losing its newspaper industry. While the economy has caused an immediate problem, the business model for newspapers, based on circulation and advertising revenue, is broken. That decline is a harbinger of tragedy for communities nationwide and for our democracy.

This is why I introduced the Newspaper Revitalization Act to help our disappearing community and metropolitan papers by allowing them to become nonprofit organizations. My goal is to save local coverage by reporters who know their communities, work their beats and dig up the stories that are important to our daily lives. Today, newspapers do that job; all other outlets — TV, radio, blogs — feed off that base. My bill would allow newspapers — if they choose — to operate under 501(c)(3) status for educational purposes, similar to public broadcasters.

    Newspapers.
    Are in the information business.
They used to be in the Reliable Information Business.

Some newspapers were in it for the money and moved into the tabloid information business.

There is a niche that needs to stay filled.
    A reliable information resource.
Otherwise we are subjected to false information for the sake of first information.
Journalistic integrity needs to be a valued and supported quality.

I hope the HA will realize this and focus on this niche market. Otherwise, readers are getting headaches from having to constantly filter through the dross to find the gems.

if ESPN wants to televise the UH/Bosie State game because both are undefeated, UH should tell them to “stick it!”

    A-House,

UH would never refuse an ESPN request during the season to televise a game! To refuse would be crazy, as national TV broadcasts are crucial for recruiting and for rankings, postseason honors, etc. Would you prefer that UH hurt itself to respond to a perceived snub? Do you know what would happen to UH in the future if ESPN decided to *not* televise any UH games…recruiting would die and the team would go downhill rapidly.

ESPN has a *lot* of power in college football. They own the rights to WAC games. They have the power to insure that NO UH games would be televised if they were upset at UH, and they own ESPN GamePlan which could easily exclude all UH games and prevent fans (and recruits) on the mainland from seeing UH games.

ESPN would lose *nothing* if they cut off all TV showings of UH, as they get higher ratings with other teams (like BSU) and they own the sports audience no matter what they show. The Warrior program would decline noticeably without any national TV broadcasts. Picking this fight doesn’t make sense to me, especially when ESPN seems to have made reasonable choices this year. ESPN asked to show the UH-BSU game on a Friday late in the season and *BSU* and the WAC decided against it. Are you going to blame ESPN for that?

ESPN has the right to add 6 WAC games during the season. Every WAC team would love additional ESPN games, and they will have to earn that right. If the Warriors win, they will get more games…earning it would be great. La Tech had to blow their 2 bye weeks to play 2 Wednesday games to get on ESPN…UH can keep their Saturday dates and get on ESPN if they win early in the season.

good points, wf, and i agree. i think mac is definitely upgrading the talent all the way around. he is a great recruiter and hawaiis best years came when he was on board. jj was that colorful, controversial , maybe even hated coach that espn took a liking to. lots of good things came to the warrior program from 99-07, hawaii bowl, ching field, etc. many fans do not like the way it ended but i respect his ability to do things his way, and his overall record, marketing skills, w/l record, nfl players, and more.
but now mac has a chance to continue building on the foundation that was set under jj, i believe he can. warriors will be back in espn favor, better nfl caliber talent, winning program, and attacking defense to go along hopefully with a wide open fast scoring offense that the run n shoot was known with brennan, chang, rolovich, whieldon, withy-allen, graunke, and now alexander and rausch. the future looks promising for hawaii, coach mac and staff, warrior fans, and the state. time zone factor is what it is, but instead of being a hindrance, maybe with right juggling, concessions, hawaii can secure 1-2 more games on t.v , depends on what jd wants to sacrifice. imo, the most important thing for hawaii is to secure talent, there needs to be a superstar player on either side of the ball. once they find this player, they need to promote and market like crazy to help bring recognition and immediate exposure, t.v. will follow.

It will be interesting to see how much influence Gordie Shaw gathers with MAC as he vets out talent on both sides of the ball.

As an example, Haku Correa has quick feet and is at the 300lb plateau and BPs 225X30 plus at Perry’s Gym on the eastside….luv to see this Warrior at C or OG.
We need athleticism on our OL, naturally MAC, being a DMan by trade– has his own coaching propensities.

JJ, on the otherhand, commandeered his players from the otherside if he felt it would help his O. Ditto with CAV.
In fact CAV wanted Laanui on his OL, but had Wayne Hunter and Laanui was needed on D.

Not saying right or wrong either way, but we are in a hurt as an OL unit and need to improve quickly.

Was it not posted earlier that the WAC asked Bosie St ot play UH late in the season on a “national” TV audience, but BSU nixed it – poster mentioned they did not want a repeat of the 2007 game at aloha Stadium and keeping to the curent schedule would allow them an extra 3 days to prepare for UH. Hate to tell them, but it’s all for naught!!!

My point about “sticking it” was to show my displeasure with ESPN, who happens to be the BIG ELEPHANT of collegiate sports today. It used to be ABC, but I don’t recall them pushing their weight around like ESPN is doing it now. What is ESPN’s purpose of having weekd ay games other than $$$ in their pockets? Yes, it gives the schools publicity, but at what cost to each school?

  86. Garret April 3, 2009 12:22 pm

    A-House,

I was the one that posted the article about BSU turning down the Friday game at Aloha Stadium. The WAC doesn’t ask for teams to play on Friday, ESPN picks the Friday games. The WAC said *no* to ESPN for the Friday game after BSU objected. ESPN was actually trying to set up a late-season national TV game for UH that could be hopefully for the WAC title, but the WAC refused…don’t blame ESPN, blame that $%#@ Karl Benson!

ABC and ESPN are owned by Disney, with ESPN running ABC sports after ABC bought ESPN. ESPN is asking for weekday games to make money, you are correct. ESPN has other games they show on Saturdays that get higher ratings than WAC games, so if the WAC wants to maximize its national TV games they have to play on Friday or Wednesday.

Most schools happily play weekday games to get added national exposure. UH has expressed concerns about Friday games due to conflicts with high school football, which is why a late season game on the day after Thanksgiving is ideal for UH…but the WAC turned ESPN down for that!

  87. Garret April 3, 2009 12:24 pm

    This is from yesterday’s blog:

ESPN wanted to put the Hawaii game on a Friday later in the season but the WAC would not force the Broncos to play there on a short week again. The teams played on a Friday in 2007.

So, we should note that ESPN wanted to show the Warriors on national TV against BSU but Karl Benson said no.

Calipari sure got an amazing contract. When you get paid $31.65 million, shouldn’t you be expected to reach the Sweet Sixteen at least a few times instead of getting a bonus for it? He gets paid $31.65 million and Kentucky (a public University!) has to buy him two cars and pay for his mileage?

The $31.65 million deal making John Calipari the highest-paid coach in college basketball is packed with perks beyond his annual salary, including membership to the country club of his choice, two cars and incentives for reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and Final Four and winning a national title.

The Wildcats paid Memphis $200,000 as part of Calipari’s buyout of his Tigers’ contract, which had paid him $2.35 million per year.

Including $3 million in retention bonuses he’ll get for staying with Kentucky through March 31, 2016, Calipari is in line to receive an average of $4 million a year over the eight years.

    The deal also gives Calipari:

Two “late model, quality automobiles,” plus mileage.

Membership in a country club of his choice, including monthly dues and initiation fees.

20 prime “lower-level” season tickets to UK home games.

Eight tickets for each UK home football game.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in incentives for reaching certain milestones, such as a 75 percent graduation rate or better ($50,000), winning the Southeastern Conference ($50,000), winning the SEC tournament ($50,000), making the NCAA tournament round of 16 ($100,000), making the Final Four ($175,000), or winning the national title ($375,000).

The right to income from conducting basketball camps using UK facilities.

Should the university fire Calipari without cause, he would still get $3 million for each year left on the contract, double the annual buyout for former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie under his memorandum of understanding.

    Miami’s GM talked about Samson.

(On thought process behind signing Jake Grove and trading Samson Satele)

“Jake is a player that we studied throughout the draft and we liked him in Dallas when he came out. He was a player that in free agency that we liked. In regard to Samson, I have a lot of respect for what Samson did here. He is a good player and good kid. He is a high character guy and I like him very much, but we needed better consistency at the position. Without going into specific details, that was the main thing we needed. Better consistency.”

So… who’s going to practice tomorrow at 7am?

  95. A-House April 3, 2009 1:20 pm

Benson’s ugly head rears again when it comes to protecting his beloved alma mater (BSU).

How many times have UH had to play on short week which included travel time back from the mainland?

    Disparity? Hell no, total discrimination!!!

Perhaps, Benson is hoping that UH gets so mad that it will quit the WAC and make it much easier for Benny’s crew and his apparent attachment to Boise St so “explanations/excuses” will be unnecessary why BSU gets most of the beannies!!!!!!!!!

I would be totally happy to see Idaho or New Mexico State trample BSU.

  96. Kazz April 3, 2009 1:27 pm

There is a different sense of pride having everyone laugh at you while you hold your head up in defiance and walk through the bulls**t.

When success is achieved, it is far better knowing you did it on your own without having “preferred status”.

It was achieved once and it will happen again.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  97. A-House April 3, 2009 1:29 pm

this affair between the WAC commish and BSU kinda reminds me of the PGA golfers who are so babied that the fairways and greens must be to their liking or they complain it’s to difficult; no noise when golfer is getting ready to hit the ball ( tee, fairway, green ); the $$$$ must be good; etc.

they are the ONLY pros who demand all these things – what a bunch of babies!! oooops – forgot about the pro tennis players.

all other pro players play with noise, lousy fields, etc.

kinda make you wonder how good PGA players are if they have to play on a regular course. how badly will their EGOs be hurt if they consistently shoot par or above.

  98. A-House April 3, 2009 1:30 pm

I know that you brought home oodles of winnings!

Did you leave some for us? Gotta make up for all the losses.

  99. Garret April 3, 2009 1:33 pm

    A-House,

I completely agree with your post #95! Benson is worthy of our criticism…in this case, ESPN was on UH’s side but Benson protected BSU and cost UH a game on ESPN.

By the way, I completely agree that ESPN dominates the TV market for college sports, which is dangerous. Things are only going to get worse now that ABC/ESPN got the BCS Bowls from Fox–I’m guessing ESPN’s criticisms of the BCS system will decrease now that they own the rights. However, it seems like ESPN likes UH so I’d be very happy if they televised as many UH games as possible.

  100. Committed Road Warrior April 3, 2009 1:51 pm

    A-House,

Agreed with your post #95. I also echo Garret’s sentiment that ESPN seems to like UH (or at least doesn’t mind putting them on).

With regards to getting national airtime, I think the only way our time zone difference works to UH’s advantage is come the very last Saturday of the regular season and all the hardcore college football junkies (such as myself 😈 ) are looking for that final “last fix”. In that case I think ESPN has no problems airing a UH home-game starting at 6:30pm locally (11:30pm ET).

I knew from the moment the Wisconsin game was scheduled that late in the season it would end up on ESPN/ESPN2. Also garanz it’s gonna be the last game aired that day, so expect a start time at or near the typical 6:00pm kickoff.

  101. Committed Road Warrior April 3, 2009 1:56 pm

Given the story surrounding BSU’s objection to playing UH on a short week, I’m surprised the Fresno game wasn’t picked up as part of the original WAC lineup.

I mean, of course there’s still the chance that it could be picked up (see 2007), but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Warriors schallack the Bulldogs for the 4th year in a row, this time on national TV.

K5 must be salivating over the prospect of getting to air BOTH the Boise and Fresno games. Hopefully the attendance turnstile count will be good for both of these matchups.

    Before I forget…

Best to luck to the Rainbow Wahine Softball team as they take on the current WAC leaders in Fresno State. Hope the bats come alive outside of Tauali’i and Milca. Hope Clare Warwick also comes out of her current shell in this series. As a senior and a pre-season WAC player of the year, her “awakening” should be a big boost for the rest of her teammates.

As for the BaseBOWS, SWING!!! CHEEEHOOOOO!!!!!! SAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!! We are battle-tested and SJSU isn’t…. Chicago State? Ah c’mon! 🙄

Yes it won’t be easy and Coach Trap has said that SJSU is the “best-coached team” he’s seen so we shall see what Coach Trap and his staff can do with our guys tonight. We haven’t faired well in series openers this season, but it all worked out. We need to start out strong and consistent at the plate.

It seems like the bats for the baseball and the softball teams are the similar issue for two different teams in two different places right now. Right now I think only Vinnie Catricala is batting over .300 and as I mentioned before other than two players, the Wahine are struggling also. On both teams I’ve seen good defense and some good pitching. But while we see continued success for the baseball team the Wahine still remain a few games shy of .500. The baseball team is compensating some inconsistent batting with TIMELY batting in big time situations and combined with key performances from deep within the bullpen from our freshman pitchers we have seen the fruits of their labor. The Wahine will need to find a similar path to success as well. While they have more younger talent stepping on the plate, I think they do not have to find “clutch pitching” like the BaseBOWS, but just consistent hitting in general.

    GOOOOOOOO BOWWWSSSSSSSS!!! :mrgreen

One of the coaches told me that the second best DE (behind John Fonoti) is middle linebacker Brashton Satele. But Satele doesn’t want to move. Also, the thinking is that in a couple of years, Paipai Falemalu will probably end up being a defensive end. He has the potential to get bigger.

welcome home and great job with your coverage at Pro Day.
These events are important for our departing players and count heavily as a valuable recruiting feature.
Your dedicated service goes a long way to draw attention to this particular phase of our football program.
With or without acknowledgement from the 8-second soundbit pundits. 🙂

As a general rule, MAC throws his better linemen on D.
He also upgrades his D units by moving his players to improve position speed: CB to S to LB to DE to DT. Mouton, Nauahi, Fonoti and Josh Leonard are great examples of these movements.

However, anecdotal observations reveal our OL is having problems with footspeed (OT) and mobility (OG).
Witness Aaron Kia with his gimpy knees and still starting.
    Happened on both sides.
    Where’s the depth?

Coach Shaw Im sure will breakdown his player inventory after SPR and evaluate his needs against his goals he has set for our O system.
Look, if you dont have the hogs pulling the wagon our O aint going anywhere–i dont care what version of the RNS they decide to run.
That was made clear last year.

Let us know–u r the eyes.

Warriors are hitting in the clutch again.
Four hits in seven and all account for three runs.
Garcia with lead-off triple in 4th and Morford singles him home.
Than Morford singles to leadoff the 7th and Vinnie hits a HR.
    3-0 bows after 7.
Not bad for a team hitting at an enemic .245. 🙂

Lori just agreed for us to take our family to the Bay Area for Thanksgiving week…I pointed out that the kids were off from school that week and we can visit friends. I also mentioned that there might be a football game on 11/21 and she figured out why I was bringing it up, and she laughed.

So, SteveM can add me to the SJSU tally–I’m 100% going now! I’ll bring 4 to the buffets/tailgates, but just 1 to the game. I have a good friend up there that would love to attend the game, but he would cheer for SJSU so I’m not bringing him!

I’m really happy that the SJSU game was scheduled at a time that worked for my kid’s school schedules…now I can bring the family to the Bay Area instead of leaving them behind so the kids won’t miss school!

  164. Garret April 3, 2009 8:12 pm

    ST,

If Paipai can put on weight without losing much speed, he could make an awesome DE. Mac has recruited a lot of LBs and some of them will move to DE, depending on who gets bigger.

  165. Garret April 3, 2009 8:13 pm

Bess is given as an example of why Miami won’t use a high draft pick on a WR.

Everyone in the NFL knows Parcells rarely drafts a receiver in the first-round. Now, second and third, that’s a different subject.

Here’s a question for the masses. Which draft did the Dolphins have a greater need for a receiver? Was it last year or this year? Anyone who said this year is kidding themselves. And exactly how many receivers did the Dolphins draft last year? None, and they were in position to take the best one available when they selected Phillip Merling at the top of the second-round. Interestingly enough, Davone Bess, an undrafted rookie receiver, outperformed just about every drafted receiver.

He also outperformed Ted Ginn Jr., a first-round pick, when they shared starting roles. That’s why receivers are a dime a dozen to the Trifecta.

  185. Kekoa April 3, 2009 9:32 pm

Al ~ You know how the game of golf can play with your head sometimes. She may have the sharpened her physical game, but methinks her mental game needs to keep pace.

  186. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER April 3, 2009 10:10 pm

Welcome home, Momo! Wow- scary times in Australia!

Hi al- I agree with Kekoa. Golf is indeed a mental game.

kekoa….i also think as does duffer, that all though she can drive for show, she still cannot putt for dough.

  190. al April 3, 2009 10:29 pm

i actually believe that any game involves a lot of mental stuff, intestinal fortitude, and talent.

  191. Kekoa April 3, 2009 10:39 pm

Rajah dat Al. My downfall when it counted. My mom used to tell me I should always allow her to putt out because I took too long lining up something I was gonna miss anyway!

  192. Kekoa April 3, 2009 10:49 pm

Liz ~ I just took a look your video showing little Lilu using ‘sign’ to communicate with you. That is really amazing for a one year old child to be so attentive! Great patience shown by your daughter to be able to teach her how to express herself.

  193. HiFlyer April 3, 2009 10:49 pm

Who’s all going to the baseball game tomorrow?

    I will see you there.

  194. chawan_cut April 3, 2009 10:57 pm

great win for the base-bows tonight. great to see the Les so full of energetic fans. lots of little league teams. the ticket count was 3,492 or something around there. glad we all got to go home happy.
saw a few tsaikos out and about. the 2 twins, Ralph and another tsaiko i forgot your name (I’m Sorry!!!). you said hi outside by the ticket office.
also saw THE Princess there. what a trooper! just gets home from Cali and Pro day and she shows up at the game to support the guys.
and man, what a HR that was by Vinnie. my friends said it hit one of those pine trees out in left center 3/4 the way up the tree.
    Go Bows! keep it going!

    Practice sounds like a plan.

Not sure if can stick around all the way til BaseBow but prolly come back anyway.

    Good to hear about attendance….

If the people don’t want to come out to the park, nobody’s going to stop them.

Good night…got to go practice in the morning.

  214. Jason April 3, 2009 11:54 pm

    Jason who?

  215. Jason April 3, 2009 11:56 pm

Too bad practice couldn’t be at 9 instead of 7. That’s just too early for me. Heck, I got to school yesterday at 8 because I was hosting a guest on campus, and I was nodding off in class. *tsigh*

  216. Jason April 3, 2009 11:56 pm

Anyways, I’m looking forward to recaps from those who are going.

  217. Jason April 4, 2009 12:07 am

Where’s Pride been lately? Hope he gets a shot to see the OL in practice sometime, so we can get a real expert’s view.

    Good night, all.

  218. Committed Road Warrior April 4, 2009 12:45 am

Great to see the BaseBows take care of business in the first game of the WAC season. A shutout is to be commended, especially against a decent team like SJSU.

Also glad to hear that the attendance was very good. Keep on winning and more fans will start coming out. Could there be a sellout in the future?

  219. Garret April 4, 2009 4:01 am

If this report is true, these players just cost themselves a lot of money.

Boston College DT BJ Raji, Illinois CB Vontae Davis & Florida WR Percy Harvin tested positive for marijuana at the combine, according to various sources, including one NFL team.

  220. Momo April 4, 2009 4:17 am

I see you on the blog garret. I got up early because I have to prepare my lesson for the adult ed class for today before I go bowling. It is sad that I did not get any closurer to Ken Morita as the family did not hold any sort of service and scattered the ashes off Waikiki and did not include anyone else. Since I will not be working next year, I may be going to many of the away games if I can swing it by flying stand by..Will let you know when I will be traveling.

  221. Garret April 4, 2009 4:48 am

    Momo,

That is horrible news about Ken Morita! I’m really sorry about that situation.

I hope that you have a good bowling day today. I’ll call you later tonight–funny how Mom is normally the only one home when I call since I seem to pick bad times for you.

It would be great if you and Mom can attend road games this year–I know both of you enjoyed Alabama, New Orleans, etc. Hopefully you won’t have a reunion conflict again with the UNLV game, as going to Vegas is always good. We’ll be at the SJSU game and I might be able to get you folks a room at our friend’s home. I actually have a business meeting in the Bay Area that I can schedule anytime in November, so I’ll actually make a profit by driving my family.

    wafan,

I’m so glad for you that you have Spring Break now! I’m sure that the week off will be great for you.

My kids also just started their Spring Break. It is actually more work for us when they have Spring Break, but we’ll do a lot of fun family things. I just hope I can keep up with my work because my company doesn’t get Spring Break off!

    wafan,
I find it funny that WA state schools don’t have a more coordinated spring break. The Spokane schools had theirs this past week

  234. wafan April 4, 2009 6:10 am

Individual school districts and the agrarian culture/society are the reasons for differing breaks, and start and stop dates. I wonder how different school schedules would be for each island if individual schools districts existed for each island. And with the different district offices on Oahu that might be interesting!

  235. d1島 April 4, 2009 6:29 am

  236. 702WarriorNation April 4, 2009 6:34 am

    wafan
Your weather has been passing thru LV – so great to hear your warming trend.
Here’s something you might have your school district adopt from Queensland Australian school. Quite funny but appropriate.

This is hilarious – no wonder some people were offended!
This is the message that the Maroochydore High School Queensland , staff voted unanimously to record on their school telephone answering machine . This is the actual answering machine message for the school. This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students and parents to be responsible for their children’s absences and missing homework. The school and teachers are being sued by parents who want their children’s failing grades changed to passing grades – even though those children were absent 15-30 times during the semester and did not complete enough school work to pass their classes.

    The outgoing message:

Hello! You have reached the automated answering service of your school. In order to assist you in connecting to the right staff member, please listen to all the options before making a selection:

To lie about why your child is absent – Press 1

To make excuses for why your child did not do his work – Press 2

To complain about what we do – Press 3

To swear at staff members – Press 4

To ask why you didn’t get information that was already enclosed
in your newsletter and several flyers mailed to you – Press 5

If you want us to raise your child – Press 6

If you want to reach out and touch, slap or hit someone – Press
    7

To request another teacher, for the third time this year – Press
    8

To complain about bus transportation – Press 9

To complain about school lunches – Press 0

If you realize this is the real world and your child must be
Accountable and responsible for his/her own behaviour, class work, homework and that it’s not the teachers’ fault for your child’s lack of effort: Hang up and have a nice day!

  237. Hawaiianbod April 4, 2009 6:43 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY KOAKANE!!!

    ……….okole maluna bradduh

  238. wafan April 4, 2009 7:00 am

    702 . . .

We have not had temps in the 50’s in months. This really will be warm weather for us.

The phone message was absolutely hilarious! If we did something like that in the US there would be law suits up the butt. A lot of parents would not be able to fathom the concept of holding their kids responsible. A few would, but the majority would not. Besides, the whole politically correct thing would preclude the use of the blunt truth. Darn it.
