Home stretch

The shape of the Rainbow Warriors’ 2014 recruiting class will be solidified — or close to it — with this weekend’s recruiting visits.

UH should know in two days whether it will be a Super Sunday.

    Fingers and toes crossed.

  2. kifi January 31, 2014 8:38 am

We need a few bigs, couple of quicks, two or three longs, one or two really smart, and lots and lots if nasties.

  3. kifi January 31, 2014 8:43 am

Did we miss out on an opportunity to bring in recruits last weekend? Pro bowl activities all weekend. Hawaii coach and former coach honored at halftime. Excitement, hoopla, co-eds, every second of a forty-eight hour visit. That was a major fumble. Wow! Who’s in charge of this ship?

  4. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 8:45 am

Alabama is interested in Josey… Yikes

  5. kifi January 31, 2014 8:46 am

Good luck to the coaches this weekend. Hopefully we can get a few more good ones, and keep the ones that have already committed.

  6. haka January 31, 2014 8:47 am

    Go Warriors!

  7. kifi January 31, 2014 8:47 am

Hey Jeezy, why go to Alabama? Their on a two game skid.

  8. kifi January 31, 2014 8:49 am

#4 – Yikes! Using him as backup, in case their first choice falls through?

  9. kifi January 31, 2014 8:50 am

    Go Bows!

  10. Pu'uwai January 31, 2014 8:53 am

    Aloha kakahiaka.

    Good luck on recruits.

    Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!

  11. NorthShoreFan January 31, 2014 9:06 am

Guud Morning Tsaikos….so far so good…

what if game….so they get their #1…then you ride the pine for 4-5 years?… wanna play ball or…

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  12. al January 31, 2014 9:12 am

i have to agree 100% on that recruiting misstep…not bringing recruits this past weekend. what better way to showcase the aloha stadium experience that could be.

  13. al January 31, 2014 9:14 am

well, we won’t get em all.
hopefully the staff has the wherewithal and has a number of “next in liners”.

  14. jm2375 January 31, 2014 9:14 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Good luck on getting the recruits.

    GO WARRIORS! Beat da Gauchos!

  15. al January 31, 2014 9:16 am

i, too am concerned by the lack of oline recruits. we should be bringing in at least four each year.
…and not to beat a dead horse, but, i thought for sure that a second qb would be on the list.

  16. al January 31, 2014 9:18 am

maybe, there’s a surprise or two that the coaches were hiding from ruthless poachers.

  17. PurpleMaple January 31, 2014 9:25 am

Alabama going after Josey? Hard to imagine. They have two 4-star WR commitments and 12 returning WRs. Their two WR commits are 6-4 and 6-5. Alabama is looking to add height at that position. Most of their WR returnees are between 5-11 and 6-1.

  18. tommui January 31, 2014 9:27 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Were we able to bring recruits in during the Pro Football Weekend?
    If so, someone goofed!

  19. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 9:29 am

    17. It just said Alabama contacted Josey. Nothing about a offer at the time. Josey will most likely be out fastest player if he signs.

  20. Bryson January 31, 2014 9:38 am

I believe Josey is on an OV to UMass this weekend…

  21. gobows January 31, 2014 10:03 am

gotta be skeptical about josey’s 100 meter time of 9.85. that makes him faster than carl lewis. he’ll easily be the fastest in the state.

  22. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 10:06 am

    http://parser.dyestat.com/search.jsp?athID=258735#.UuwB7hCwK3s

probably a typo and supposed to be 10.85…. He ran these times last year. 10.96 and 10.97

  23. Former UH Athlete January 31, 2014 10:07 am

20.. I wouldn’t be too worried about UMass. Bad winters and not FBS. Going 1,200 miles from home just to play FCS level doesn’t seem like a good move IMO.

  24. jonj January 31, 2014 10:07 am

21 I think he clarified it in tsais article that his 100m was 10.5 or something like that.

  25. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 10:08 am

    Umass is in the MAC..

  26. 808Fringe January 31, 2014 10:08 am

    #7 I’m witcha man! They’re on a 2 game skid and we’re on a 1 game winning streak!

  27. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 10:13 am

    23. Meaning… UMASS is FBS…. FYI

  28. Fei Jai January 31, 2014 10:33 am

At the end of the coming season, after another “chow time” season, like the first two “chow time” seasons, what will become of these new “chow time” recruits? Doubt the new coach will have much use for them since they are associated with hawaii’s winningest football coach – norm “chow time” chow.

  29. Warrior Dave January 31, 2014 10:42 am

What a strange recruiting year this has been. Usually the blog is full of recruiting news by posters and Paul Honda does a lengthy article for the newspaper. But here we are, less than a week before signing day any UH is in panic mode?

I’ve been saying the same thing as Al in the we need oline commits. So far nada. Hope they are under the radar or next year will be more of the same. Chow and BJ will have to agree to a buyout and the process starts all over again.

  30. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 10:49 am

    29. Not that it justifies anything but I think Lauaki is going to play OL.

  31. Warrior Dave January 31, 2014 10:55 am

Jeezy, do you feel that our oline needs to be upgraded and do we have what we need to get the job done next season? I value your opinion so I’m asking.

  32. cocobean January 31, 2014 11:12 am

Preaching to the choir when talking about O linemen and DTs. Big people who are athletic enough to play in the trenches are hard to come by. UH’s MO in this regard has been to take the 2 star guys and coach’um up.

But it is a bit distressing that there’s been little recruiting news about restocking the trenches.

  33. al January 31, 2014 11:29 am

lauaki is a oline candidate first. probably at og.

  34. Bugaz January 31, 2014 11:29 am

Maybe because there was only one senior o lineman and confident in the youngsters already on the roster so they feel they can be picky.

  35. al January 31, 2014 11:36 am

wd…don’t forget “eli’s coming” as in tavita eli of kona. he’s an ot/og candidate.
I hear another oline guy may commit soon.

perhaps they’ll flip Gifford to oline, too.

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid January 31, 2014 11:42 am

    Howzeet Gangeez!

May the recruitment net bring in the biggest, fastest and strongest we can get! I am with others who look for some big men among the catch. Big, mean, strong, quick men will do nicely.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  37. al January 31, 2014 11:43 am

bugaz…they really like wa’a, tupai, and allen. all redshirt freshman. hollis and griffin should improve with the weight training the beemer is dishing.

  38. al January 31, 2014 11:45 am

wd…I don’t think the coaches are in a panic mode. decommiting is routine and par for the course. this happens to the haves as much as the have nots.

sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

like asking the best looking cheerleader to be your prom date.

  39. al January 31, 2014 11:46 am

well, the recruits are here or will be by nightfall.

  40. whitey January 31, 2014 11:47 am

good luck warriors and give em

  41. tom-warriornation January 31, 2014 11:51 am

Mahalos to Jeezy, Al & others for providing great recruiting & team insights–this is much appreciated by diehard UH fans all over the world.

Question: can someone provide a current depth chart of the OL and DL; with maybe projected newcomers that will/could be in the mix? I, too, am worried about the trenches.

We all hope to have some great news this weekend; or Monday.

  42. al January 31, 2014 11:51 am

32…its not that their MO is recruit 2 star guys, its what is available to them.
the 3 star plus guys all want to go to the glamour and riches programs.

whereas, finding a diamond in the rough is the life and times of a mid-major program. recruiters at this level just have to work harder scouting, researching and finding these guys. they’re out there no doubt. just look at any nfl roster and you’ll see many a diamond that came from small and mid major programs.

  43. al January 31, 2014 11:54 am

tom…I’d rather wait till Wednesday evening when the signatures are inked. anything could happen between now and then. a verbal is not binding.

  44. tom-warriornation January 31, 2014 11:55 am

Condolences to my fellow diehard fan, boya_jr who is in Honolulu right now for his father’s funeral; who passed away a few days ago in San Francisco.

  45. al January 31, 2014 11:57 am

the oline depth chart will be the most intriguing.
we could see some rs frosh scattered across the line.
perhaps ben Clarke will be a starter and they like kody afusia, too.

but, it’ll be a fight to the finish or opening day is my guess.

dline’s focus has been to shore up the de’s. looks like we done a decent job addressing that issue.

  46. whitey January 31, 2014 12:02 pm

guud vibes today. can stop to smell the roses

  47. whitey January 31, 2014 12:03 pm

deepest sympathies to boya jr family.

  48. Warrior Dave January 31, 2014 12:23 pm

Thanks Al for your input. Love your quiet calm going into the weekend.

  49. bowwar January 31, 2014 12:36 pm

al: What are your birdies saying? And the Caleb Dressler potentially leaving the MBB program came from Jackson Wheeler on Jeff Portnoy’s program on the radio…

  50. jimmy the lock January 31, 2014 1:51 pm

    Hawaii 5-0, sign ’em Danno.

  51. jimmy the lock January 31, 2014 1:58 pm

So Old McDonald heads out with a bucket to pick some fruits. He passes his pond and sees three college aged women skinny dipping. He stops and one of the female says, “we’re not gonna come out so that you can see us naked”. Old Mcdonald thinks for a moment and holds up his bucket and shouts back, “I’m not here to see naked women, I’m here to feed the ‘gators”.

TGIF, Have a great 3-day weekend, go Bruno!

  52. Former UH Athlete January 31, 2014 2:09 pm

25… when did that happen? Had to have been recently. I remember UMass in the FCS playoffs not too many years ago.

  53. 3-Prong January 31, 2014 2:12 pm

Eh you Guys! Smile,….. It’s Aloha Friday in Paradise!

  54. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 2:14 pm

    52. 2012. This will be year 3 as FBS…

  55. 3-Prong January 31, 2014 2:21 pm

Plans finalized to make Mom’s dream come true by taking her to see Labron at Staples on 2/5 versus Clippers. 83 years old and finally going to see an NBA game with her favorite player. We waited too long, Barkley retired. She’s a Heat Fan now!!! Brought her to tears when we told her XMas Day. This is what sports is all about….. Making Dreams Come True….PRICELESS.

  56. whitey January 31, 2014 2:26 pm

3 prong, why not go after the giant sturgeon in the Columbia, now that would be making dreams come true. hahahahaha

  57. 3-Prong January 31, 2014 2:39 pm

whitey: Don’t think Mom would want to do a Souther Cal long ranger to Mexico for Hamachi to make my dream come true! hehe

  58. tommui January 31, 2014 2:51 pm

Boya Jr – deepest sympathies and my prayers go to you and yours.

  59. ai-eee-soos January 31, 2014 3:01 pm

    … stale news …

Hawaii: Jordan Wynn has been promoted to full-time quarterbacks coach and will call the plays per sources.

    … from a “national service” …

  60. boya_jr January 31, 2014 3:05 pm

Thanks Tom & blog. Go Warriors! UH football 24/7

  61. ai-eee-soos January 31, 2014 3:05 pm

… from being a WAC coach to

    the NFL …

Minnesota Vikings: Multiple outlets are now reporting that former Idaho head coach

Robb Akey will join the Vikings as defensive line coach.

  62. PurpleMaple January 31, 2014 3:06 pm

Warriors should have 16 O-linemen in fall camp (including the two new recruits). The pieces are there. The challenge is to get the 2-deep line ready for the first game (Washington). If there is a weakness, it is at center where they are thin in depth/experience outside of Ben Clarke. If Ben can’t start, Kody Afusia can move in, but he is the projected starting left guard. Getting Jon Sekona will help for the future. Hoping he chooses Hawaii.

  63. cocobean January 31, 2014 3:13 pm

Al. I understand UH goes after the best big guys they can. They’ll go hard at the best in State talent and follow any leads on the mainland. My point was try as they might we don’t end up with too many 3* and up big men. Our coaches have always earned their pay coaching up the talent they bring in.

  64. ai-eee-soos January 31, 2014 3:21 pm

Timmy Chang – it’s official. from the JSU web site …

    http://www.jsutigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=669833&SPID=109801&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=29000&ATCLID=209390204&Q_SEASON=2013

  65. Ipu Man January 31, 2014 3:44 pm

Congratulations Tim Chang. Going to the school of Walter Peyton…or is it Payton?

  66. Ipu Man January 31, 2014 3:52 pm

Small school, but it had its diamond in the rough…

  67. kapakahi January 31, 2014 4:05 pm

    #35,

JMHO that Gifford not likely to play OL……other than maybe LS and/or TE instead though.

  68. AllG January 31, 2014 4:07 pm

We are always thin at DT and always suffer injuries at that position. Why do we only have 1 commit from a DT?? Sad

  69. AllG January 31, 2014 4:13 pm

This recruiting class is very average. A diamond may emerge, looks like we got some good players, but no future stars. I’d say if Chow doesn’t get 8 wins or more he should be shown the door! We need a younger coach we can build a winning tradition with.

  70. al January 31, 2014 4:14 pm

aiig…perhaps switching to the 3-4 is the reason for that one. and we are after a number de/olb types for the dame purpose.

  71. haka January 31, 2014 4:41 pm

    aiigoo….don’t be sad. (;

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid January 31, 2014 5:07 pm

Sympathy and prayers to boya jr’s family.

  73. wafan January 31, 2014 5:08 pm

    73!

  74. bowwar January 31, 2014 6:37 pm

Where is the Fehoko kid going to?

  75. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 7:01 pm

    68. Not everyone is position specific recruits…. Lot of times you don’t even know how a kid is going to grow. Tui Unga could easily turn into a DT if he keeps getting bigger. ST listed him as a 6-3 220 OLB I think. He’s actually 6-5 6-6 an close to 250-260 range…. Who knows where he will play. You have a ton of options there. Most likely DL or OL though. Dany Mulanga is a 6-4 210 safety. He might fill out and become a 6-4 240 OLB eventually.

But I see why you’re concerned.

  76. al January 31, 2014 8:08 pm

    fehoko is a junior.
his mother says he has 50 offers.

  77. slenzi January 31, 2014 8:12 pm

    Congrats to Coach Timmy Chang!

  78. al January 31, 2014 8:12 pm

aiig…don’t pay attention to the number of stars that a recruiting service assigns. don’t even guess how many of them actually know the game in the trenches. they don’t have the resources to watch every kid play.

  79. Bugaz January 31, 2014 8:48 pm

Is Tui Unga already at UH?

  80. kapakahi January 31, 2014 8:51 pm

JMHO but couldn’t have hurt to trip Ngalo……together with his buddy Dany this weekend……to help build that recruiting pipeline with Trinity HS.

  81. kapakahi January 31, 2014 9:09 pm

Whatever the reasons why UH apparently decided to passed on former JC signee LB Darzil Washington, just still hoping that he doesn’t end up at Utah State……where he’s tripping this weekend.

  82. kapakahi January 31, 2014 9:23 pm

    #74 & #76,

Already invited to the 2015 Under Armour All-American Game held in Orlando, Florida.

  83. jeezy33 January 31, 2014 9:56 pm

    79. yes

  84. Bugaz January 31, 2014 10:07 pm

    Nice THanks

  85. d1shima February 1, 2014 5:19 am

    Great Super Weekend All!

Aloha and Condolences to boya_jr and Ohana.

Congratulations to 3-prong’s Mom. Enjoy da ride!

  86. d1shima February 1, 2014 5:19 am

Nice to read kifi and al insights…

  87. d1shima February 1, 2014 5:21 am

    Finally…

    Who ya got?

  88. NorthShoreFan February 1, 2014 5:55 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos….wet….wet….wet
