Holding out

The Warriors prefer not to use the “R” word, especially around freshmen.

But if possible, the Warriors would like to preserve the option of redshirting some newcomers. Some players already have been designated as redshirts, such as defensive ends Marquis Fairchild and Jahlani Tavai and defensive tackle Ka‘au Gifford.

The Warriors can help development and depth if they are not forced to use such promising freshmen as wideouts Darrian Josey and Don’Yeh Patterson, linebackers Jamie Tago and Malachi Mageo, and defensive backs Jerrell Jackson and Dany Mulanga.

To that end, wideout Duke Bukoski was moved from the scout offense to the regular rotation this week. Bukoski, in essence, is on the “travel” roster. He will be among the players who will stay overnight in a Waikiki hotel ahead of tomorrow’s game against Oregon State.

By the way, Marley’s Dad’s shirt has been sitting in my car for, oh, since December. But I lost the address, so e-mail me at stsai@staradvertiser.com and I’ll send it. Thanks. And sorry.

coach luke should teach the receivers about separation. standing in a spot right next to a defender is useless.

Good morning Tsaikos and Lurkers…wherever you are.
Last post yesterday I asked if Tsai’s geek wizard could
add “thumbs up” and “down” by each comment. It should
not be that difficult. Some of the comments are really really good.

    I feel your pain.
From what I’ve been told, there is a waiting period of about 15-20 minutes from when I post to when it actually appears on the site.
    Not sure why.
But it is what it is.
That’s a little bit of a problem because I usually post, then hit the road for practice. So there might not be a ding-ding-ding next week.
Or there will be more incoherent posts than usual. (Hey, I’m still recovering from tripping and breaking a table a couple days ago.)
    Thanks, folks

Has anyone seen Duke practice, does he have speed and hows his route running?

#7 ST – probably has to be modulated.

  13. Andrew September 5, 2014 9:21 am

Does anyone know if any websites will have the game replay of the UH OSU game? I will be on the mainland this weekend and will be unable to watch the live broadcast. Plus stupid me forgot to DVR it at home..haha

  14. jeezy33 September 5, 2014 9:26 am

That would be legit to see Jamie Tago redshirt and Hawaii can land his brother Logan this recruiting class. They can play 4 years together possibly and team up with Mageo for a solid LB corps.

  15. cocobean September 5, 2014 9:27 am

Read the article about the receivers. Now wondering about overall team speed. Who is the fastest player on the team?

    Aloha Gangie,

It’s that time of the week — football, fuud, friends and fun! For those who missed last week’s tgate, we had a GREAT time!

This week we have a special treat. Some folks are visiting from the mainland. Please come out and show them some Tsaiko Aloha.

    Some notes:

-Place remains the same – Rainbow Bay Marina, Cabana “A”.

-Password remains the same – my name (Jerry Boster) or Tsaiko

-Tgate is potluck style. Bring your beverage of choice. Paper goods/cutlery provided by Tsaikos

-Early crew will be arriving at about 9 AM

-Grill crew will fire up about 10:30 so the grill will be ready by 11 AM

-Clean-up will be 1.5 hrs before game (~3 PM). If you want to leave to go inside the stadium clean up what you brought.

-Reminder the donation bucket will be open to support tgates. This money pays for the cabana and common use items like charcoal, paper goods, utensils, etc.

-If you are planning on attending the post-game tgate bring your coolers to help store the left-over food.

-There will be a water cooler and cups available

-Tsaikos be sure to let your guest know where we’re located, the password and the few simple rules we follow.

-Questions or directions? Email me: jboster(at)yahoo(dot)com

    GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!

    Cheers, SailorBlue

Guess they got P O’d at my comments, then blipped it,

    and the blog.

  37. nutmegger September 5, 2014 12:30 pm

Be on the look out for ads for the Dave Shoji book in the Star-Advertiser. The UH Press is taking pre-orders priced with a good discount from the future retail book price. Book won’t be out until end of the year though. The ads run Sunday and maybe on Thursdays – not sure though.

Who knows maybe in 37 years there will be a Norm Chow book. He will be about 110 years old by then and may have become the winning-est football coach ever.

Thanks. I forgot that you could do that. Is that through the app or the website?

  40. bowwar September 5, 2014 12:42 pm

They should use Josey for kick-returns, as I heard he’s the fastest guy on the team and Saint Juste “hesitates” too much on his returns…You gotta suck it up and hit the wedge at warp speed and hope you find a crease or you’ll never take it to the house. Besides, they need a “burner” on the outside to spread the field otherwise, the defense will collapse the perimeters as Washington did. It does the same thing as having a QB not having a strong arm…

Hey – we made the AP wires …

Oregon State is wary of Hawaii
    By Anne M. Peterson
    AP Sports Writer

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20140905_Oregon_State_is_wary_of_Hawaii.html

  46. Stephen Tsai September 5, 2014 1:27 pm

Not sure what’s happening with blog comments.
It’s been an interesting ride. Just before we launched the site, the site manager left us.
One of our page designers has been helpful in trying to trouble shoot. He’s a great guy, and we’ll get this figured out.
Meanwhile, be happy. We live in Hawaii.

  47. jimmy the lock September 5, 2014 1:37 pm

    The blog ate my homework.

Why do some sports writers write the obvious? Anne Peterson should have wrote something like OSU has no worries against Hawaii and say their game against the Huskies was a fluke…that would’ve been more interesting and extra fuel added to the fire and more white board fodder.

  48. (Jesse)James September 5, 2014 1:43 pm

ST: What happened to the original “techie”.

    Wasn’t his name – something like Scott M ..?

Bring him back to this blog.

  51. jimmy the lock September 5, 2014 1:46 pm

That’s the problem, this blog needs a site administrator. Someone who is knowledgeable in html, javascript, java, php, relational databases, wordpress, servers, operating systems…all hardware, software, middleware, telecomware, and whatever that relates to websites. That’s all you need.

Thanks page designer for helping to troubleshoot. They should give you a raise instead of the 30k – 40k range you are getting now.

#57: OSD, any kine “war drums” will work in changing the atmosphere at the stadium back to the JJ days. Taiko or Vili’s war drums, we gotta make the stadium a place the visiting team dreads when they enter the field. It was raised on Curren’s show, “where’s the Warrior’s mascot???” Bring Vili the Warrior back as he entertained the crowd and got people into the game…or find someone else who can do the same.

  62. SteveM September 5, 2014 2:29 pm

    RE: my #28
The listing and comment count for this today’s blog entry is currently stuck at 44 comments at the
    http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/warrior-beat/ INDEX page.

  63. Old School Dave September 5, 2014 2:36 pm

Bowwar: I’m not a Utah fan, but it was kind of a chicken skin moment to see their entire stadium get into the Taiko drums. I suspect that many of the drummers are returned missionaries who served in Japan. UH needs to get some type of atmosphere at their games to fire up the team and fans. When UW had the ball last Saturday, I didn’t hear the UH band playing. Maybe someone at UH needs to “Ho’oponopono” with Vili or maybe get some current students to form some type of drum corps at games. All part of the college game day experience, IMHO.

  64. jimmy the lock September 5, 2014 2:47 pm

SteveM, you’re stuck, I see the count in the 60’s.

Anyway, doesn’t matter. We can post.

    RE: #62 and 64
Jimmy the Lock — I clicked the link I put in #62 after it posted and the count was an accurate 62. 😐 In writing the #62 post, I had to go back to the page to get the URL and it was still 44. Then my failing mind forgot the number and I went back again to get the number…it was still 44.

Anyway, there seems to be some latency in the index page updating, which might account for why ST’s new blog entry does not appear on the index page for 15-20 minutes (per his #8)

    OSU – 45
    Hawaii – 17

  99. Warrior Dave September 5, 2014 8:11 pm

Hummmm, please win some games before talking about red shirting anyone. Until then, use any and everyone. Another 30 carry game for Joey aND the safeties playing every defensive play is just asking for injuries.

Nevada beat Washington state, looks like Rolo isn’t running the pistol as much. Also looks like a full back is implemented with the run and shoot.

Might help (Might not). The issue you described in #73 has to do with caching. We’re still looking into it.

maybe me just be patient here.. n wait for sept 6 edition…

  118. Warrior World September 6, 2014 12:06 am

Oh wow, the clock must be auto-adjusting to your time zone or something. We should check and see if that’s true for other time zones, too.

    So then…what’s the score? : )

  119. pollypicador September 6, 2014 1:27 am

I hope there’s a ton of rain tomorrow so it makes for a slippery ball for the other team’s quarterback.

I hope Chow plays his cards right. And discards the cards in his hand that read “limit Joey’s carries” or “coddle his players from injuries.”

Furthermore I hope the team plays physical and aggressive…and plays like there’s no tomorrow.

Woolsey needs to do a number on the OSU defense in the same fashion as the Nevada’s quarterback did against WSU…run with the ball, option the running back, go thru his progressions, *throw* to the the running backs and TE’s, and even use the pump fake…and be poised.

Watching the Warriors so far has been a pleasure. There’s no one player that tries to be flamboyant or thrash talking. Players let their actions do the talking. Very rarely do you see a player in either practice or game time sloppily dressed or having big fat belly protruding over their waistline. The players look streamlined. That’s what I like about this team.

Tomorrow’s game is huge for the Warriors. A win would give this team a boost, confidence and momentum whereas a loss would be like having to go back to the drawing board.

The Warrior team and coaches have worked hard…and deserve a win.

  120. wafan September 6, 2014 3:31 am

    Kinpira!

  121. wafan September 6, 2014 3:34 am

Gonna be another hot one here. Yesterday was the 40th day of 80+ degree temps. Today might be the 41st. I wonder if we will hit 50 this year.

  122. wafan September 6, 2014 3:35 am

And, nearly forgot . . . good morning!

  123. st. anthony trojan September 6, 2014 5:12 am

WW… not telling the score…or 45k fans maybe no show.. just the die hard tsaiko’s …will be at cabana A celebrating…oops.. better stop… giving out to much info here 🙂

    Congrats…. cal lee…first win…this year..tougher one next week..

Wahine struggling…young team…they are just getting ready for conference…me have confidence dave will right the ship in time…

  124. 3-Prong September 6, 2014 5:41 am

I heard that although cleared to practice, Wahine plan to hold out Nicki Taylor until conference. Freshman getting good PT in the mean time estabishing depth for future success. Patience is the virtue here.

…..and Let’s Go Bows! Beat Da Beavs!
