Hisatake, Salas

Big thanks to offensive lineman Ray Hisatake and slotback Greg Salas for appearing on today’s Warrior Beat Show.

Lots of good questions.

The replay is available somewhere on our site .

Several years ago, I needed to reach our office manager, Leslie Kawamoto. I went through the White Pages, found her name and number, and called.
A man answered.
Me: May I speak to Leslie?
Man: I’m Leslie.
Me: Sorry, I was looking for a woman.
Man: Aren’t we all?
Thing is, everybody needs a Leslie Kawamoto. In her more than two decades with The Advertiser, she took care of everybody. Editors, clerks, photographers, designers, writers and, especially, sports writers.
We relied on her for everything, even things we didn’t know we needed.
Most of all, she was a great friend. To everyone. She even used a storage room as a place to listen to our problems and, as you can imagine, journalists have an insatiable appetite for whining.
But she’d always listen, and after doing others a favor, she would say, “Thanks, dear.”
Leslie was on track for what would have been a terrific career in medicine. But a painful arthritic condition forced her to change careers. I suspect she has helped more people in her non-medical endeavors.
Today is Leslie’s last day with The Advertiser. It’s impossible to express the depth of our love and gratitude. She’s just the best.
Thanks, dear.

small kine mental games…….but whew……..a thing of beauty when fully executed.

  18. Da Punchbowl Kid May 11, 2010 6:52 am

Please do not read this question to Greg Salas and Ray Hisatake until ALL others have been read:

Okay, gotta get ready for my morning waddle, oops, I mean “walk”. Play nicely in here.

  27. haka May 11, 2010 7:06 am

I can just see Kelly Majam sauntering in to a Texas Roadhouse with her UH cap on backwards, belly up to a table, finish off the 16 oz ribye, the fixings, the 5 lb baked potato, wipe her mouth on her sleeve, stand up, release a moderately surpressed belch and say, “Mahalo boyz! Gotta go swing da tin now…Aloha!”.

    Go Wahine!
    Bulla sez, “Make Memories!” Yeehaw!

  28. Bulla May 11, 2010 7:08 am

    Loa,

all good, mahalo for the props, God gave me an angel 🙂

mental toughness, i don’t know how to explain it, you either got it or you don’t. ryan is so happy to be home, but he is still holding his comments close to his chest

…..one day an OL told him, ‘….hey rookie, take it easy, it’s Spring Ball…’ ryan told him, ‘….(blank) you, i ain’t no rookie, i go one way and that’s balls to the walls, if you can’t handle me kicking you a$$, quit the team, you play how you practice you &#*%@(….’ so i guess ‘the beast’ made his point.

it’s called ‘game day mentality’, how nutz can you get, can you control the rage in the cage, can you focus, laser focus on your assignments…do you know every nuance of your opponent, what are his tendencies, which way does he lean, how does he approach the line depending on the play called, what are his idiosyncracies, what are his habits for certain plays…..what does he eat for bfast….ok, going overboard….

you know what i mean, ‘the beast’ just wants to look in his team mate’s eyes on game day, and he’ll know the real deal

mental toughness, you either have it or you don’t,…..

  29. kokane May 11, 2010 7:28 am

morning all you tsaiko animals out there, yes a beautiful day in the 808. pumped up comments and some rage in the cage so early today which makes for and interesting 24/7. chewhoooo.

good luck to the wahines on their quest for gold in Las Curces. took my legion team there back in the early 90’s and the boys meet up with the golden choral, place wasn’t the same after we left…..memories.

sending out positive vibes to the kane warriors and ctrap on their play this weekend. grip it and rip it, 5-2-5, leave no doubt.

  30. kama krab May 11, 2010 7:39 am

    Howzit Everybody,

    Bulla,

I hope the OLineman went pick up his panty after getting b***** slap by Ryan.

This is football and I hope the OLine realizes this when they are getting manhandled by the DLine. In my opinion they all need to start picking there panties off the ground and start playing with a mean streak. If not let the young kids play who want to play and kick peoples arses. Like the DLine has shown, there is only one way to go and thats balls to the wall.

Ryan should tell the OLine, if the like play paddy cake get the hell off the field and if they want to play football, then man up.

  31. haka May 11, 2010 7:49 am

    Go Warriors!
Stay focused and take no crap!
    Controlled rage at every snap!

  32. Bulla May 11, 2010 7:58 am

    kama,

USC in 16 weeks and 2 days, 114 days, 2736 hours…. the clock is ticking, as we speak…..do they realize that? i mean, really, i know i can go off at times, but if I knew that in 114 days that the USC TROJANS were coming to MY HOUSE and it’s not for a cultural exchange visit…..ON NATIONAL TV, i mean how much greater can it get?

UH will have to play the ‘game of the century’ to gain a victory…but, BUT…. it can be done……prepare, prepare, prepare for battle……every week, every morning have a plan of attack……

so we shall see, it’s not like it’s a big secret…shhhh, shhhh, did you know that USC might be coming down, we’re not sure yet, we think they are……NO WAY

USC will be here in 114 days and counting to pound the living s^&* out of us on National TV to establish their run for the National Championship……and that is a fact…..so Warriors…….will you be ready? not to play and whimper, well we should have done this, we should have done that, looking back….NO, NO, NO….to win, you have to train like a winner, to be victorious, you have to train like a victor, to be a champion, you have to train like a champion…..bottom line…..you PLAY how you PRACTICE……..

  33. Garret May 11, 2010 8:01 am

    protector,

I agree with your point at the end of the last blog that it is strange how BSU modified the terms in Petersen’s contract to give him a $70k pay *cut* for this coming season. Given how much money he is bringing to their program, cutting his pay after he went 14-0 last season and won a BCS bowl game and has his team ranked #2 in preseasons polls seems pretty unusual…

  34. bluefintuna May 11, 2010 8:08 am

    kama krab

i wrote about this before, it starts at the top

only panties on the field are the coaches

everyone can see this, even new players to the program

now that the coach is in year 3 he changing his approach, hopefully the old timers change, too, especially the OL giving ryan a hard time

the coach conceded that he needed the players to become both physically and mentally tough

you see the team in king of the hill competitions, more tackling and hitting and bull rings

    so thats a start

I like toughness, i’m beginning to like how ryan approaches the game, esp. how bulla describes an incident

  35. haka May 11, 2010 8:24 am

    bft,
“only panties on the field are the coaches
everyone can see this, even new players to the program”

can you clarify what you mean by this and who exactly you are in disfavor with?

  36. Pauoa Boy May 11, 2010 8:31 am

    Bulla and kama krab…

I’m with you guys on that subject. How the frikk can our OLine talk smack after the past couple years getting man handled and setting an NCAA record for most sacks given up? Seriously and then you going tell somebody for take it easy during practice, frikken serious??? I wish I knew who that Olineman was…I would tell my DLineman to de-bo his arse on every play. If our OLineman have that mentality to take it easy during practice, I’m sure it will be a rerun season of the Sugar Bowl game and Wisconsin game where our OLine look like swiss cheese with all the pukas inside. Our OLine needs to get their heads out from where the sun don’t shine before they can talk. They have lots to prove on the field cause they have lost that killer instinct and are the joke of the team right now. I hope wasn’t one of the upperclassmen OLineman cause if I was Coach I would murder that guy in practice…Gas um all day until he understand the importance of leading by example and putting it all on the field!

  37. Bulla May 11, 2010 8:48 am

    PB

it blew me away, to say the least….but hey, it is what it is…..the D is looking good, they’ll be making plays and swarming the ball, and that is good.

what makes me smile is when a walk on red shirt takes the initiative to arrange one on one workouts with during the summer with the starting OL….whoever wants to, and 2 of them agreed……gotta start somewhere, and i believe it’s in the trenches.

and another good note, ‘the beast’ is officially a DE/LB and will report to Coach Cal…..hallelujah…..he can play DT with anyone, but this minimizes potential injuries because of the constant double/triple teams DT’s face 🙂

  38. haka May 11, 2010 8:52 am

  41. Bulla May 11, 2010 9:02 am

    haka,

ST probed coach miano on the show, and coach said anything is possible, look at Reagan Mauia…..you never know…..but i do know that there are going to be some changes in the D, it’ll sound like Vegas with a ‘joker’ here and a ‘joker’ there maybe???? time will tell…..i would say ALL jokers wild

rich ellerson took a defense like that with him from Cal Poly to Army, and has had some success with it…comes down to the 3 P’s, preparation, preparation, preparation…..

  42. Pomai May 11, 2010 9:02 am

bulla will ryan have two years to play after this or just one?

  43. PowderPuff May 11, 2010 9:03 am

BTW – thank you sooooo much, LK, for making my Tsaiko nametag. And thanks to sjmacro and myki for delivering it. I LOVE IT! Mahalo, mahalo!!!! I am now a “card-carrying” Tsai-ko. Oh boy…

  44. Garret May 11, 2010 9:05 am

Detroit News says that the Big 10 will go to 16 teams.

Here’s what is happening today with Big Ten expansion, which is almost certainly headed for a 16-team conference, based upon sources who can be trusted and who prefer that their names not be revealed.

The Big Ten within a couple of years will likely be one of four 16-team national super conferences, with Big 12 football and Big East football the casualties.

Missouri and Nebraska are the best bets to join the Big Ten and begin the break-up of the Big 12. Rutgers and either Syracuse or Pitt are the most likely schools to leave a dissolving Big East and join the Big Ten, although Connecticut is a possibility, as is Maryland from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Notre Dame is the wild card. It is also the most vital name the Big Ten can add to a 16-team lineup.

  45. (Jesse)James May 11, 2010 9:18 am

Good morning Tsaikos….hope all have a great day.

    PP #43 …don’t you mean Sicko….??? MWHAHAHAHAHAHA j/k cuz…LOL

Question for Ray Hisatake: “So, are you gonna be leading condition and unsupervised workouts during the off-season???” “Is the O-Line buying into off-season conditioning and training?”

  46. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 11, 2010 9:21 am

Are these official NCAA panties in compliance with NCAA regulations? Are they mystery panties and can they be worn before actual play?

    Inquiring/bored minds want to know.

  47. al May 11, 2010 9:31 am

j/j….hisatake is vieing for a fulltime nfl career these days.

  48. al May 11, 2010 9:41 am

congratulations on your free agent contract with the carolina panthers.

  49. al May 11, 2010 9:42 am

i think you will become the first nfl player of japanese/samoan bloodlines, that would be cool.

do you attribute your size to your japanese ancestry or the samoan side of the gene pool?
    okay, just joking.

best of luck to you, you’ve come a long way from the “streets of san francisco”.

  51. Bulla May 11, 2010 9:48 am

    Pomai,

he has 3 to play 2, so this is his redshirt year, and then 2 for 2…..since he played as a true freshman, and this past season as a sophomore. just has to train, get faster and stronger and smarter 🙂

  52. al May 11, 2010 9:48 am

    greg salas

i remember when you came to hawaii, there was a tug of war between the offensive and defensive coaches as to which side of the line of scrimmage that you would line up. fortunately, the head coach who ran the offense had the final say. do miss playing defense?

  53. al May 11, 2010 9:50 am

    greg salas

i would imagine that you could have been our starting safety had you chosen the defensive side. so, you have bounced from wideout to slotback, which is your preference and how will this effect your nfl potential?

  54. al May 11, 2010 9:52 am

    greg salas

i asked your parents last year what your 40 times were. these days, how fast are you running your 40 and do you feel you could still get a bit faster?

and also, what is your vertical jump?

  55. al May 11, 2010 9:54 am

    greg salas

please remind your parents to stop by the tsaiko tailgates again this year. it is always a pleasure to talk story with them.

  56. (Jesse)James May 11, 2010 9:56 am

al..oops, my bad. Well than, my question should read:

“What does he think the O-line should be doing during off-season conditioning? Who does he think the leaders will be and will the offensive line buy into the idea that conditioning is key to doing well during practices and games?”

  57. mctruck May 11, 2010 10:11 am

    ST,

Is it the angle of the lense, or what??, love dem high-water pants you wearing….bwaaaaahahaha!!!…no-mo socks to boot!

  61. A-House May 11, 2010 10:45 am

A 3-flight trip for the Wahine SB team seems a bit weird – why go to San Francisco, then LA, then El Paso? to save $$$.

Hawaiian has a direct flight to Phoenix then change airlines and a short flight to El Paso.

Players must be really pooped out!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. LizKauai m/ May 11, 2010 10:53 am

  70. Kazz May 11, 2010 11:37 am

    NFCA Poll INSANITY

While the BCS system doesn’t effect softball, the whole thing is still PILAU!!!

The Rainbow Wahine of Hawai’i held at the No. 23 spot in the quirky NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll released this morning.

As with most seasons in the coaches’ poll, a team really has little chance to move up, down or into the poll, regardless of performance. This is the third consecutive week all 25 teams remained the same, and 22 of them either didn’t move at all or moved no more than one spot in the rankings.

To demonstrate the ridiculousness of the softball rankings, one needs to look no further than 15th-ranked Stanford. The Cardinal lost top pitcher Teagan Gerhart to injury in early April and have now lost 12 of their last 13 games in Pac-10 play. Despite that, Stanford still held at the No. 15 spot in the NFCA poll this week.

Name another NCAA Division I sport where a team can lose its star player, lose 12 of 13 games, and still be considered one of the top 15 teams in the nation.

Hawai’i lost five votes this week, going from 98 to 93 without playing. In one of the more spectacular blunders in poll history, Oregon State (last in the Pac-10 standings and with a losing record of 24-28) is ranked 28th this week. The Beavers, who lost earlier this season to Nevada, are not eligible for NCAA Tournament consideration since they are guaranteed to finish with a losing record.

  71. BleedGreen808 May 11, 2010 11:43 am

    Salas–

When will we be seeing your “senior shirt”?

  72. Old Diver May 11, 2010 12:29 pm

    Regarding # 70

Kazz, is this poll used in the seating?

  73. LizKauai (iPad) May 11, 2010 12:46 pm

#70. Pffft. When the Wahine rock- watching the pollsters go HUH? Will be fun. I guess they think nobody is watching or cares about what they are doing.

    Hiho!

  74. Ralph May 11, 2010 12:48 pm

Perception and reality. The perception is that the best sb is played in the Pac 10, in reality they are the winners of nearly every college world series titles over the last 2 decades-UCLA and Arizona are tops. Every year the teams from top to bottom are good and play outstanding sb and they win most of the non conference matches. The SEC is starting to challenge but teams like Alabama, Tennessee, LSU and Georgia are just knocking on the door, this could be the year for Alabama and Georgia to knock the door down.

  75. Ralph May 11, 2010 12:53 pm

Michigan is another team that does well and they are potential super regional team and they have made it to the world series along with Northwestern from the big 10. I think the pac 10 takes it again this year, too many horses, intense competition every week in 3 game match ups, no let up by any of the top pac 10 teams. Whereas in our WAC, the perception and reality is we are not a competitive conference in sb and our teams except for 2007 UH and Fresno State rarely make it out of the play in regional.

  76. Ralph May 11, 2010 12:56 pm

Fresno State’s coach Wright stated that it has been very difficult for FSU to make it back to the college world series since 9/11 because the NCAA has restricted travel for regional play, meaning, the WAC has to beat the Pac 10 in regional and super regional play to get to the world series. As I stated earlier, the Pac 10 owns the most world series titles, like 17 of 21 titles, some ridiculous number.

  77. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 11, 2010 1:04 pm

We don’t need a poll then right?

12 losses out of 13 but you are perceived to be in a great softball conference buys you some slack.

Stanford is a good ball club but c’mon…

  78. homey May 11, 2010 1:10 pm

Can’t wait to do some soft toss, field some grounders and popups, and take batting practice with Kazz and Ralph at the big tailgate field.

  79. wafan May 11, 2010 1:17 pm

    Hi!

  80. wafan May 11, 2010 1:19 pm

    #76 . . .

Might some conspiracy folks say the reason the NCAA runs their softball regionals the way they do is to ensure the major conferences continue to win.

  81. Committed Road Warrior May 11, 2010 1:19 pm

As I posted before, the doctors, lawyers, Indian Chiefs and the NCAA/BCS will always protect their own before allowing “others” in.

absolutely no offense to our Tsaiko attorneys, but the phrase doctors, lawyers, Indian chief sorta flows – know what I mean!

Sharing is an unknown quantity to certain institutions/individuals.

Wow, we going see “homey” on 9/2/2010???

Now, i gosta find my very old, busted up glove – wait, I think Mrs A-House dumped it many years ago!!!

    Ok, regulated to “fan” status.

UH offered LB Connor Crowell of North Point High School in Maryland.

Crowell said he plans to visit Hawaii this summer. His parents are from the islands and he has a cousin who is a graduate assistant coach there.

  96. Kazz May 11, 2010 2:54 pm

Other than the time the Wahine DROPPED in the polls after that week long trek on the mainland and the fact that Kelly Majam has been disrespected by the voters and pollsters by being left off the NFCA Player of the Year consideration Top 25, the individual and team accolades ala polls and weekly awards have been pretty fair all season long and I’ve had no real gripe with how the Wahine have been looked at this season.

It’s the lack of basic logic in the polls in general that bug me and always will.

The Wahine can shut up some people though by doing their part in winning the WAC tourney and making some noise in whatever regional they get sent to.

BTW, apparently whoever was doing the commentary for a recent SEC softball game pointed out all the “cheapy” home runs this year and is calling for the NCAA to increase the standard minimum of how long softball fields can be. Many that saw this game immediately thought they were taking a shot at the Rainbow Wahine’s attempt to break the HR record set by a traditional softball name representing a traditional softball power conference like the PAC 10.

We know our surroundings and I doubt the tennis folks would give up and entire row of courts to allow for field expansion for the softball program….

Realistically, the only viable option is if the softball team plays it’s home games off campus at a larger field.

Excuses are excuses, especially when these talking heads have never seen the Wahine play or let alone can point out Honolulu, HI on a map. How many times this season have we seen that net out there prevent those balls from traveling another 20 feet???? How many other WAC schools have played in the SAME parks in the conference and have yet to yield HR numbers like the Wahine???

Fact is fact, lies are lies, ignorance is ignorance, and bitterness is amplified when you have a television audience.

  97. wafan May 11, 2010 2:54 pm

    Bulla . . .

    #28. That explains a lot.

Maybe they need to take lessons from the Beast.

  98. wafan May 11, 2010 3:00 pm

    Kazz . . .

There is ignorance and then there is stupidity. It does not take much to cross the line to stupidity.

If the other teams cannot power them out of the Wahine’s stadium would the excuse be the “thicker” air? Or will they claim that since the Wahine play at what is virtually sea-level they are stronger and have more power at the higher altitudes.

  101. Kazz May 11, 2010 3:03 pm

    Bulla and Homey,

Can I interest you in a follow-up round of nutball also?

Me and my friends are trying to decide on what the official nutball ball should be. So far we’re debating a soft practice softball, a half empty water bottle, a bowling pin, and a Nerf arrow blaster.

What is nutball you ask? Well, imagine a game of human horseshoe. 😆 You win by ummm… hitting your target. I swear I’ve never laughed in enjoyment and cried in pain all at once. 😆

  102. homey May 11, 2010 3:30 pm

How about someone bring a batting helmet w/facemask and see what it feels like to be beaned by a hardball.

  103. NorthShoreFan May 11, 2010 3:43 pm

    Kazz…das why dey get “cups”…

homey..I know what it feels like to get beaned by a hardball..just not one thrown at 90+ miles per hr…
wea you been all dis time?…sumting was missing from da play house..

  104. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 11, 2010 3:47 pm

    Wafan,

No. The only excuse is the time difference… 🙄

Please! That’s a horrible excuse for conference opponents that know our field, how it plays, and should know what to do to get acustomed to the warmer climate and time changes.

  105. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 11, 2010 3:54 pm

    NorthShoreFan,

You’re not supposed to play nutball with a cup. That’s like participating in an MMA fight with ice hockey goalie equipment on.

There is no greater rush than sitting on the ground with your legs wide open just waiting for the toss! Its like that split second you place your foot on the ledge of a plane before you jump.

Ahhh… I miss skydiving. Did it once and cheated death. Won’t so it again though. Well.. maybe. 😎

  106. NorthShoreFan May 11, 2010 3:59 pm

KAZZ>>>>>>YOU sic puppy!….i go just watch you and homey play den….

  107. whitey May 11, 2010 4:00 pm

it actually doesn’t matter where the game is played because each team has to play on the same field. this isn’t a matter of the home team playing om one field and the visitor on another. what is more important than field advantage is officiating at home games or using officials from the visitors conference. the prima donna coaches will always put down a loss at UH with many excuses, so when playing against them, if it is possible, run the score up on them and keep the 1st team till only 2 minutes remain in the game. in other words, take no prisoners!!!!

getting back to brudda bulla’s thought about practice. i assumed that every practice is intense unless it is just a walk thru practice. playing hard is a must and the old motto of “through this portal pass the world’s hardest nose players” should apply to all warriors. if cannot handle this kind of pressure, then it is seriously time to reconsider the options of no warrior football.

  110. whitey May 11, 2010 4:12 pm

sportsbow, you had me going there when i first saw iowa western cc. i thought you misspelled it and thought it was iowa wesleyan/ sp i go look it up, and voila, yes there is an iowa western in council bluffs. check the establishment date and is 1966. no wonder this old fart got confused. left iowa in 65.

    Bulla #28:
There was a scene in Hard Knocks last year on HBO about the Dallas Cowboys training camp. A LB kept blasting through the O-line during drills and an O-lineman told the LB if he does that one more time he was going to knock his head off.
So I think the LB backed off. Always wondered about that, I mean, if you’re trying to impress the coach why would you let an O-lineman scare you? Football, you gotta be ready to fight at all times. Even your teammates at practice…
I’m loving the Beast playing for UH. We’re getting inside scoops which is why we all like to follow this blog.

Hey homey! Checking SailorBlue’s reports, we won’t have the big field until September 25. Maybe we should have another practice tailgate before then. 🙄

I don’t know whether anyone had posted this yet…

Follow the Rainbow Wahine Softball Team in Las Cruces!!!

http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2010/5/11/SB_0511100621.aspx (includes pics of the ladies on their trip during practice and the hassles of plane travel 😆 )

    Tuesday, May 11, 2010
After arriving in Las Cruces early in the morning and grabbing some food at 2:00 am on Tuesday morning, the team had a late wake up. With finals still to be taken, many of the players are studying hard. The team met in the lobby at 2:15 p.m. and soon after left for the field. The ‘Bows warmed up on the adjacent football practice field and practiced for an hour at the NMSU Softball Complex, then finished practice with some sprints on the practice field. On the way back to the hotel, some stopped for some groceries and food and then hit the books again as most are taking at least one test tonight.

The team will go to the WAC Softball Banquet Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. and later in the day have a practice.

    Monday, May 10, 2010
After three flights and 17 hours of travel time, the Hawai`i softball team finally arrived at the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces after 1:00 a.m. The team’s travel route took them from Honolulu to San Francisco to Los Angeles to El Paso, Texas…and then an hour drive into Las Cruces. The Rainbow Wahine spent much of their time studying on the flights and on layovers as this is also finals week for the University of Hawai`i. On Tuesday, UH will get back into the groove with an afternoon practice at the New Mexico State Softball Complex.

  124. Kazz May 11, 2010 5:26 pm

    Pomai,

Nothing wrong with being a homer. The best boosters/fans make up the majority of “homers”.

Nothing wrong with believing in your team(s) no matter what.

  125. Ralph May 11, 2010 5:27 pm

most of the softball fields are 200 down the line, its at center that UH is closer. Most of the pac 10 and SEC center field is at 220. The way the Na Wahine are hitting over at the left center power alley, 210 won’t matter, their home runs were high and long.

  126. Bulla May 11, 2010 5:30 pm

    manoa mist,

head on a swivel at all times…hit or be hit…..it’s football for crying out loud…..

  127. Ralph May 11, 2010 5:31 pm

the NCAA changed the construction of the ball, made it livier, and allowed bats to have a -11 differential. The old bats had somewhere between a -4 to -6 differential. Bat speed increased, bats are made better, the women are stronger, now more runs are being scored as compared to years past where the pitcher dominated in low scoring games.

  128. Ralph May 11, 2010 5:33 pm

the bat differential was discussed by the ESPN commentators during last weeks SEC game. I think it was Michelle Smith who brought it up to explain why there are more home runs today than her collegiate years.

  129. BleedGreen808 May 11, 2010 5:35 pm

HA…polls are poll, but check out the WAC website on who fans think will win the softball tournament. VOTE FOR THE WAHINE!

    Hawaii is behind in 3rd
    Fresno St in 2nd
    LaTech in 1st

  130. Kazz May 11, 2010 5:39 pm

    Ralph,

The homefield at Arizona is 225 down the center and there were some squeakers at that distance and rightfully so.

However, I thought it was a cheapshot that female color commentator took when she said, “that’s real home run power at a real distance in a real ball park”. Minutes earlier in the game, they did bring up UH’s home runs since it was Arizona that set the record last season.

  131. Kazz May 11, 2010 5:45 pm

In a double elimination tournament, a good pitcher can make up for shoddy play by her infielders, which is why LaTech does stand a chance to steal the WAC tournament from the Wahine or even Fresno State.

Not surprised by the poll at all and I don’t care. 😆 But I’ve voted twice already. 😆

But I was kind of surprised Meghan Krieg didn’t fair so well against the Wahine. The first game was what I expected, but the second game she fell apart and the Wahine were able to be patient enough to get the pitches they wanted.

Again, no room for error in the tournament. Should the Wahine play against LaTech on Thursday morning, I expect a VERY close game, with errors spelling DOOM for LaTech and Krieg left out to dry.

  132. Kazz May 11, 2010 5:47 pm

Those Easton Stealth bats run between $275.00 – $325.00.

My Easton “Cyclone” cost me a whopping………….. $23.99. 😆 it’s a nice color though. Black around the handle and forest green uptop. 😎

  133. Curt May 11, 2010 5:52 pm

    sportsbow,

Thanks for the heads up on the new PG recruit. After visiting his myspace page, I wouldn’t place him high on my list. I’m too old fashion and a fuddy duddy.

  134. Kazz May 11, 2010 5:57 pm

    MySpace is still around??? 😆

Eh… I’ve never even bothered with a Facebook account.

  135. Curt May 11, 2010 5:59 pm

I do like the idea of another point guard though. With a running team, it doesn’t hurt to have players who can handle the ball and fly down the court…like A.C. did.

  139. Kazz May 11, 2010 6:09 pm

I have to smile seeing the photos from the softball team up in Las Cruces. I hope they are enjoying the simple things in life. Yes it’s a tournament and they’ve got business to take care of in the classroom and on the field, but it’s Bulla’s infamous quote put to life and in pictures.

Regarding the myspace page for the visiting recruit, here it is:

    http://www.myspace.com/1salt

    Give me your thoughts.

  143. Ralph May 11, 2010 6:18 pm

Kazz meghan Krieg got squeezed at UH, the umpire did the squeezing, she had to bring it over the plate for a strike. an umpire makes or breaks a pitcher on the outside corner and black. Like i mentioned at the game, if I were the opposing coach, I’d sit my catcher on the outside all night long. all pitches, drops, curve, riser, all on the outside, if they hit a good pitch, so be it, but I doubt is goes over the fence.

  144. protector May 11, 2010 6:18 pm

    Curt on # 135,

True dat! We can never have enough ballhandlers on the team. I think that was a big part of the reason last season that it was so hard to bring the ball up, along with the fact that a number of players didn’t go back to help Hiram. Although the new recruits may be raw, the majority seem blessed with ball-handling ability, versatility & quick-hands which should thwart opponents’ efforts to fullcourt-press or trap UH as much as they previously did. If they do, it should pay-off in terms of quick buckets / more 2-on-1 or 3-on-2 situations.

  145. Curt May 11, 2010 6:21 pm

Go Wahine. Show all those naysayers that Hawaii can play.

  146. Curt May 11, 2010 6:26 pm

    protector,

Yeah. I’d love to see us flyin’ down the floor with quick guards. It’s the basketball version of the run n shoot. Combine that with a full-court press and we’d be dangerous…hopefully not to ourselves!

  147. Ralph May 11, 2010 6:27 pm

the Jasmine Trias syndrome is now over whelming the WAC Poll in UH favor, UH will win the “WAC tournament”

  148. el guapo May 11, 2010 6:27 pm

  150. 808ike May 11, 2010 6:29 pm

    Hi everyone,

As a reminder, the sb game on Thursday is at 11:30 a.m. (MDT) or
    7:30 a.m. Hawaii time.

  151. Ralph May 11, 2010 6:37 pm

good heads up 808Ike. I wonder if its an advantage to play the morning game (7:30 HST) or the second game (10 am HST) that FSU will be playing. I hope our girls are morning people, sleepy heads play sluggishly, so I hope they amp up with red bull, monster, or 5 hr energy drinks.

  152. 808ike May 11, 2010 6:42 pm

    Ralph,

Have Kazz FEDEX some to the girls.

  153. Kazz May 11, 2010 6:50 pm

Krieg got some doo doo calls and so did Parnaby. Krieg let it get to her and the Wahine got some pitches from her that they wanted.

  154. Kazz May 11, 2010 6:51 pm

    808ike,

It might be against NCAA regulations to ship things to the team.

Perhaps if I could find out the appropriate times to do so then maybe. 😉

  155. Kazz May 11, 2010 6:54 pm

7:30am is perfect. I have a modified schedule at work and don’t have to go in until 11:30am.

  156. Kazz May 11, 2010 6:55 pm

    Curt,

I will have to check the site later tonight. I’m still in the office and social networking sites are KAPU. 🙁

  157. Kazz May 11, 2010 7:01 pm

    Ralph,

The outside pitches have been the thorn in the side. So much that when I get home from the game I watch the replay to see what exactly we’ve hit and what we couldn’t.

Noteablely, Krieg pitched a high outside pitch to Rodriguez around her chest that ended up being a homer, not a “squeaker” either.

But yes, that was one incident.

Majam is a big target now and while it’s a sin to look forward to next season considering where we are at right now, but Coolen might be thinking about moving her out of the lead off spot and may toss her in somewhere between Iwata and Gonzalez or even Gonzalez and Rodriguez or heck, maybe cleanup.

It’s only gonna get sketchier if the Wahine get deep into the NCAA tournament where more pitchers will be more capable of hitting Ks from the outside corners.

  158. Kazz May 11, 2010 7:03 pm

A morning game leaves you more time in between the next to practice, recovery or whatever.

I think the “early” start shouldn’t effect the players. That 9 day road trip to three different locations in 7 games should be fresh in their minds of how to handle the time zone difference and what needs to be done to succeed.

  159. A-House May 11, 2010 7:06 pm

I like Conner Crowell – as a MLB he has quick moves for a 6’2″ 22# line backer – quick penetration throught the OL to hit the QB or ball carrier – seems to hit with power.

as a running back – same quickness/power and appears to have some speed out running the DBs.

Parents are “local” – born and bred in Hawaii!!

class of 2011 picture getting better and brighter if he commits!

I’m still sick and not getting any better – just different symptoms. Cannot break the fever.

Will pick up on the threads in yesterday’s bog about Title IX and Social Security once I get back amongst the living.

Are any UH fans on the mainland going to attend any of the sotball games this weekend.

This weekend is the last home series for the BaseBows – we’ll be there assuming I can somehow shake whatever it is that’s thumping me upside the head.

  172. Slugger May 11, 2010 9:10 pm

    W-Doc,

It’s a round-about way, but I’ve asked a friend (in Kona) to have his brother in Las Cruces check their local TV programming. If the SoftBows game is being broadcast locally, we may get a copy. Doesn’t help us view the game on Thursday. I’m going to miss part of the game on Live Stats if I can’t re-schedule a Thursday a.m. appt. Dang!

  173. Derek May 11, 2010 9:23 pm

Re: MBB point guard visiting this weekend. I don’t think he’s going to sign w/ Hawaii if offered…too far away and I think he’s coming over only for a vacation. But, we’ll see what happens. Just my opinion. I’ve been wrong before.

True fans! The Wahine are in 1st place in the WAC poll for the Softball Tournament winner.

  176. Curt May 11, 2010 9:39 pm

    Derek,

What gives you the impression that the recruit is tripping us? The point guard who subsequently signed with San Jose State appeared to have tripped us.

Whatever the case, I just e-mailed Coach Gib the link to the recruit’s my space page which I found disturbing.

  177. Curt May 11, 2010 9:41 pm

    Kazz,

You gotta check out facebook. I just know you’ll luv it. Many of your friends are there already.

  179. BleedGreen808 May 11, 2010 9:52 pm

    Curt–

Although it’s hard to judge a book by its cover, I think this maybe a good exception to the rule. I personally don’t mind about this particular recruit. But, if he commits, then, hey, I will be the first one to welcome him to Hawaii.

  180. BleedGreen808 May 11, 2010 9:54 pm

    Pomai–

Yeah, Hawaii is now leading by double digit numbers.

  181. BleedGreen808 May 11, 2010 9:55 pm

    WDoc–

    Hope you feel better tomorrow.

  182. BleedGreen808 May 11, 2010 9:57 pm

    AHouse–

Rumor has it that he may be related to “Nasti” Nate Ilaoa. It would make sense since Nate graduated on the east coast.

  183. Curt May 11, 2010 10:15 pm

    BleedGreen808

You’re right that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Gib should have a much better sense of the situation. However, I’d say that book cover is pretty bad for my tastes.

sorry, still waiting for wahine basketball recruits. if they don’t get any good ones, then they will have a long season. i know they hardly had anyone that used up their eligibility, but, with only relying on the returnees, they may win only a few more games. i watched a few of the ncaa tournament games and realized that the wahine would get their butts kicked as those teams are much, much quicker, not only for flat out speed, but the way they rebound, play defense, run the floor, pass the ball, etc. i thought that we wanted to get to that level. looks like it may take longer than we thought. i am hoping for the best though.

  192. Curt May 11, 2010 10:49 pm

    papajoe2

You’re right. There’s been a dearth of news regarding the Wahine recruits. That can’t be a good sign. I hope they’re learning from Gib and the other coaches.

  194. Ralph May 11, 2010 11:38 pm

Na Wahine only had 1 senior this season, Dita, they awarded two scholarships to Sydney Haydel and Keianna Evans, both can play the #1 or #2 position, or very small forward, both about 5’7. Megan Tinnin returns after taking fall off for personal reasons. The team struggled, but because of the Bolla situation it would be difficult for her to cut players to increase her recruiting pool and talent level. Next year she’ll have 5 seniors and she’ll be able to recruit 5 for the 2011 class.

  195. BleedGreen808 May 12, 2010 12:00 am

    PAPAJOE2–This is for you…

Malia Cravens, brother of 2010 UH football commit Siaki Cravens and Sua Cravens, accepted a basketball scholarship

Football standout Su’a Cravens, who started on varsity as a freshman defensive back last season for Temecula Valley, has transferred to Vista Murrieta, his father Kevin Cravens said by phone this morning.

“He just exercised his right as a freshman (to transfer),” said Kevin, in response to my query.

Cravens averaged 4.6 tackles per game last season for Temecula Valley. Troy Lau, who runs Prodigy Athletes in Tececula where Su’a works out, said Su’a was the first freshman in 23 years to start on the Temecula Valley varsity.

There has also been a report circulating that Su’a has received a scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii, where his brother Siaki will transfer this summer after stops at Utah and Long Beach City College. Kevin Cravens said Su’a has been told he will receive a scholarship offer this summer, but the family hasn’t received it yet.

“As far as I’m concerned, nothing is official until you get that offer in writing,” Kevin said.

There is chance three Cravenses could win up at Hawaii. Temecula Valley junior Malia Cravens (Su’a’s sister) has been offered a basketball scholarship by Hawaii and has attracted interest from a handful of schools including USC and UCLA regarding her potential in track and field, Kevin said. Malia won the California Indoor Invitational high jump with a leap of 5-foot-6 on Feb. 6 in Fresno. In basketball she averages 10 rebounds per game.

Su’a Cravens has some other impressive lineage. His mother’s cousin, David Fulcher, was an eight-time Pro Bowl football player for the Cincinnati Bengals. Also, Kevin Cravens’ father, Jack Cravens, was offered a basketball scholarship by John Wooden at UCLA, but opted to play basketball and baseball at Brigham Young University, Kevin said.

Two-sport Temecula Valley star Malia Cravens has delivered a verbal commitment to Hawaii women’s basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias, the family confirmed in an e-mail to The Californian.
Cravens averaged 6.8 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Golden Bears, who finished in fifth place in the Southwestern League with a 3-7 record (14-13).
On the track, Cravens is a two-time Southwestern League champion in the high jump.

  197. Ralph May 12, 2010 12:14 am

but she is coming in for 2011, along with Adopho of Molokai. In the fall, only Sydney and Keianna will be enrolling at UH.

  198. Ralph May 12, 2010 12:21 am

make that 6 seniors next season, forgot Tinnin is a senior next fall.

  199. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 12, 2010 12:23 am

Coach Dana needs to get an assistant that can work with her post players AND can help recruit the mainland.

  200. Ralph May 12, 2010 12:24 am

Papajoe2 and Curt, Na Wahine basketball season tickets are only $50 for seniors.

  201. Ralph May 12, 2010 12:28 am

yup she needs a legitimate post coach, someone to coach in the paint. Na Wahine were slow in the paint, offensively and defensively, mostly poor positioning and not blocking out. Coach Dana announced last season that she would coach the post, as a former substitute guard and at about 5’6, I don’t think she has the working knowledge to coach post players.

I’m glad that Chad Owens is holding a camp on Maui. It is also nice that Maeva and Jackson are helping out.

The Chad Owens All-Star Football Camp is scheduled for Saturday at Maui High School.

Coaches for the camp include former University of Hawaii players Owens, David Maeva and Nate Jackson.

Cost for the camp is $40. The Pop Warner division will run from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by the high school clinic from noon to 4 p.m.

To register, call (808) 330-5537 or visit http://www.hawaiifootballschool.com.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.

Hi. I wanted to drop you a quick note to express my thanks. I’ve been following your blog for a month or so and have picked up a ton of good information as well as enjoyed the way you’ve structured your site. I am attempting to run my own blog but I think its too general and I want to focus more on smaller topics. Being all things to all people is not all that its cracked up to be.

Have you ever considered adding more videos to your blog posts to keep the readers more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner,I found that to be more helpful. Just my my idea, Good luck
