The unsupervised passing drills continued yesterday. Right wideout Royce Pollard (white shirt) and cornerback Tank Hopkins had a series of battles in red-zone, 1-on-1 drills:

Billy Ray Stutzmann, who exited spring practice as the No. 1 left slotback, worked out at wideout:

After finishing his job as a tour guide, slotback Corey Paclebar put in a late workout:

When Pollard decided to join the Warriors  in June 2007, he could not immediately reach Ron Lee, who was the receivers coach at the time. But he was able to contact Rich Miano, who coaches the defensive backs. Miano made the pitch: Want to play cornerback? Pollard declined, and now is the Warriors’ leading returning receiver. But just for fun yesterday, he took reps as a defensive back. He did fairly well.

That, of course, inspired quarterback Shane Austin to give it a shot as a receiver:

then…he would make for a fine oline coach at his alma mater. i’ll bet he could also be influential in keeping the local boys home.

Budget cuts are hitting UNLV *hard*. 9 departments eliminated…18 degree programs eliminated…215 jobs eliminated…685 student spots eliminated.

Nevada (Reno) probably got hit really hard also. UNLV got a 13% cut, but the higher education funding overall was cut 15%, so other Nevada universities got hit harder than UNLV.

My 3 year old is still on east coast time. She had me up at 4:30am!!! Can’t go back to sleep now.

I wonder why we are offering a JUCO DB at this point? It seems like we have an abundance of DB’s.

    Talofa Kawika49!

A pre-season tailgate would be awesome! But all plans are on hold for me right now. Mama will be 8 months hapai in August and just about ready to hanau when we kick off the season. Needless to say, everything is on hold.

It might be a good omen — My daughter was born in 07, the magical Sugar bowl season. Maybe the birth of my son will bring on some more magic for our warriors!

ST, I mailed a check to Hilina’i on May 31, but it still has not been cashed.

If she lives in Hauula, why did the check have to be mailed to a Kaneohe address???

  41. bigislandkurt June 9, 2011 7:03 am

d1shima — you’re quoting me out of context. So you don’t think we have an abundance of corners and safeties…at this point? Twenty of the current players on the roster are listed either as corners or safeties. Another 7 defensive back recruits were signed with the incoming class — with two of them projected to be starters sometime in the upcoming season. That’s 27 DB’s that I count…at this point. I guess the practice squad needs players.

That JUCO kid must be a pure stud if we are still going after him and making an offer.

  81. Curt June 9, 2011 10:14 am

Did I hear that Phil Steele is predicting SMU to play in the Hawaii Bowl? That would be great. Expect lots of fireworks on the field and in da stands.

  82. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 10:19 am

#81. Imagine JJ matching wits with Rolo, his protege!!! Should be a GREAT game!

  83. Curt June 9, 2011 10:23 am

    al,

I don’t usually pay attention to a guy’s look. However, that QB recruit Jake Rodrigues is too good looking. Coach Mac probably pulled his offer because all the receivers would be jealous, annoyed and distracted by his looks that they would drop most of his passes. 🙂 Too bad Slugger. You won’t be able to chase him up and down Ching Field this season.

  84. Ralph June 9, 2011 10:29 am

BG are you working on your Ph.d? You graduated last week with an MBA, so how come you are studying for a mid-term exam?

WooHoo! My friends are in town from Saca-tomatoes to play in the Manoa Cup. Both Dad & son are playing in the qualifying rounds this morning. Jon & his wife were at a Call the Coach (Coolen) show with me last year. Play time for me!

    al,

That’s a side benefit of going to practice. 😀 Practices get me out to walk and it’s fun watching them. I learn stuff about football. Inspiring to see some of them working out; makes me want to go home & do Pilates, although I will never get the six-packs they carry.

  111. migloto June 9, 2011 11:19 am

if the trip is a “mission” for charity, UH isn’t supposed to participate because state institutions are non-profit and can endanger their non-profit status by participating or donating to private charity events. now if it is related to the program, like a football camp or recruiting, that’s another story. sounds bad, but it is true. SMU can participate because it is a private institution and they can do what they want since they aren’t funded by taxpayer dollars like state universities are. there are all kinds of backlashes from doing so, UH has had its own issues because of JJ’s foundation and how it coexisted with the commercial enterprises of UH. politics as usual but that’s the way ethics laws are written in hawaii.

  112. Curt June 9, 2011 11:22 am

    UH football recruiting straegy:

At what point in the process should UH coaches “walk-away” from a local recruit because he wants to play on the mainland or is on the fence and probably would not qualify for admission to UH? Anyone hear Coach Mack say this is/are the guidelines?

How many players were committed/signed, but ineligible and went to JC? How many of these players actually return and play for UH?

Time better spent looking at other student athletes from the mainland or international?

Yes, it’s nice to sign the so-call ” the name local players”, but most of the top tier with excellent GPA and SAT chose a school on the mainland. Hawaii is decades away from keeping the top 10 eligible player to stay home.

Should UH coaches still try? Why waste time and effort?

What % of top tier teams, except Texas, can say their players are from “their back yard?” What good is this if the Texas legislators actually pass legislation to cede from the USA or Florida where there is talk of cutting out high school sports to “save the budget”?

  124. Curt June 9, 2011 12:04 pm

#123 Hope you and your ohana are doing well. In regards to recruiting, I think Coach Mac is doing it right. The core of the team should be local players. The scholarships are cheaper. Support and attendance should be nominally higher. We should be able to develop closer and stronger ties with the local coaches. It costs less to see the island prospects. And on the other hand, find the best prospects available on the mainland. I think we have a good mix.

  127. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 12:30 pm

oh-oh!!! It started to rain. And my garage is being re-roofed.

    What will happen now?

The guys are still out to lunch.

Will they finish the job today or go home?

they’re baaaaack and working on the roof!!!

  131. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 12:57 pm

You know, after paying the roofing company $5,300 to re-roof the enclosed lanai and the garage, I will laugh my head off if a hurricane rips the roof off!!!

We never did install hurricane clips that anchor the roof to the ground.

  132. Curt June 9, 2011 1:03 pm

Up on the Roof. Gigi, do you know that oldie but goodie by the Drifters? It’s not classical so there’s a 1% chance you’ll know it.

When this old world starts getting me down

And people are just too much for me to face

I climb way up to the top of the stairs

And all my cares just drift right into space

On the roof, it’s peaceful as can be

And there the world below can’t bother me

    Let me tell you now

When I come home feelin’ tired and beat

I go up where the air is fresh and sweet (up on the roof)

I get away from the hustling crowd

And all that rat-race noise down in the street (up on the roof)

On the roof, the only place I know

Where you just have to wish to make it so

Let’s go up on the roof (up on the roof)

    brief instrumental-chiefly strings

At night the stars put on a show for free

And, darling, you can share it all with me

    I keep a-tellin’ you

Right smack dab in the middle of town

I’ve found a paradise that’s trouble proof (up on the roof)

And if this world starts getting you down

    There’s room enough for two

Up on the roof (up on the roof)

Up on the roo-oo-oof (up on the roof)

Oh, come on, baby (up on the roof)

Oh, come on, honey (up on the roof)

  137. Kazz June 9, 2011 1:09 pm

HOW DA HELL DOES ONE TURN DOWN A 20+ MILLION DOLLAR REVENUE GENERATING EVENT FOR THE STATE?????

I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE PRO BOWL, BUT THE MONEY IT GENERATES FOR THE STATE CANNOT BE DENIED!!!

    IDIOT.

Thank God UH football will be getting a new turf at Aloha Stadium, I think this may be the last time we’ll see anything new happen out there.

Lord knows if it wasn’t for the NFL’s Pro Bowl, NO money or effort would have been made to repair the turf for UH football alone.

  138. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 1:10 pm

    kawika, what beautiful lyrics!!!

    wonder how the melody goes.

  139. Garret June 9, 2011 1:11 pm

    migloto,

Thank you for the information that you passed along, I had not realized that there may be issues that prevents UH from doing humanitarian missions. So, the rules for state institutions in Hawaii prevent UH from going to Samoa with SMU…that is pretty sad. I guess the blame is on the Hawaii rules that prevent charitable missions instead of being JJ’s fault.

It is sad that the ethics laws for the state of Hawaii prevent charitable missions by state institutions. Ironically, if they declared it a camp then it would be fine with the state…but not with the NCAA or the donors who provide the medical supplies going to Samoa.

  146. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 1:16 pm

    nope

  147. Kazz June 9, 2011 1:17 pm

    GIGI,

I don’t have strokes. I hand them out.

But like I mentioned, I could care less about the Pro Bowl itself. All I care about is the 20+ million it generates in tourism, the free national advertising, and the fact that it’s presence inadvertantly serves as a positive for UH football.

I mean seriously, if there wasn’t pressure to “spruce-up” the stadium, would they have spent all that money if UH football was the only event held in there??? NO WAY!!!!!

Pro Bowl leaves, the stadium will turn to crap (more so than now) and along with it will be all those millions in revenue.

  148. Curt June 9, 2011 1:18 pm

    Is he losing his mind?

Really sounds like some of the tax cut at any expense folks out here. We lost education funding because they refused to tax candy. Our roads are beginning to look like Hawai’i’s because they cut the tab tax — but they now have the gall to complain about the state not spending enough to keep the roads up.

They really need to look beyond their collective noses before they create a third world environment.

Again, anyone that thinks a stadium on the campus of UH Manoa would work is a foolish fool living in a fantasy land.

One must live in reality to see what the cost and headache of doing construction in Hawaii is, then factor in an essential re-arranging of how state and city and county offices are run, the same offices that are in charge of our roads, traffic light systems and management.

Everything would need to be uprooted for it to work.

I see your point. Problem is when local players who never had any intention of going to UH cry in the media that they were never recruited by UH. As we have seen on this very blog the fans start to criticize the coaches for not even making the effort without knowing the facts. Take for instance a big time local QB who is going to the mainland. He gave his verbal to a mainland school during his junior year and was firm about it. So of course UH coaches respected that, yet we heard the belly aching from his family that he was never recruited by UH. Auwe! As for the HS kids who don’t qualify, UH is well aware of their situation. This is why it appears UH is over recruiting, UH expects those kids not to make it but offer anyway to soothe the fans and hopefully give UH a chance after they graduate from JC.

  180. al June 9, 2011 1:53 pm

#171 – guess I am an idiot as I did propose purchasing all the property in Varsity Circle and land bound by University Ave to King St to the Humane Society (if ncecssary), build the stadium over H1 and use multiple entry ramps into the parking structure. Entry ramps would become exit ramps when the game is over.

Just like in 1961, I proposed to UH administration to build parking structures around lower campus, along the cliffs, with classrooms/offices above. They had a good laugh!

  185. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 2:10 pm

Would a 30000 seat stadium sellout 6-7 times per year?

  186. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 2:10 pm

    …or more?

  187. Kazz June 9, 2011 2:13 pm

    A-House,

The problem is, all the people I hear proposing a stadium on campus would work NEVER, NOT ONCE addressed the issue about the existing area on lower campus and around it.

It would be a different situation if those that suggest it and even have the resources to jump start the attempt NEVER EVER mention what to do about the roads and traffic and overcrowding situation.

Too often I see people simply thinking the EXISTING infrastructure and developed areas would be fine. THIS IS FOOLISH.

If an investement, A REAL INVESTMENT, into resources and money were made to do what was necessary then that would be a first amongst those that simply suggest a stadium on campus would work.

How many times do we hear so-called great ideas, but no real attempt to tackle the HARDEST issues of money and efficient coordination?

My point is, the simple idea of a stadium squeezed onto the lower campus and EXISTING landmarks and freeway exits would not work and anyone thinking it would is FOOLISH and there have been PLENTY of those people that already spoke up thinking it would work.

YOUR idea is a step in the right direction, now comes the pricetag and the right people in place to follow through with it.

  188. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 2:13 pm

Would it draw 10000+ per week for HSFB?

  189. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 2:15 pm

  190. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 2:16 pm

…seems to be working for “rail”

  191. Kazz June 9, 2011 2:17 pm

    D1,

Cannot compare. Back then there was workable room and space so whoever thought that a stadium wouldn’t work back in the late 80’s and early 90’s never thought it through. And yeah, I know Dave Shoji was skeptical.

NOW… we’re talking about a 20,000 or 30,000 seat facility with NO room for parking. Hell, the current parking situation makes it difficult for a SSC event with 7,000 seats sold.

AGAIN, in the CURRENT infractructure not going to happen.

  192. Kazz June 9, 2011 2:17 pm

    Rail… ugh… 😡

  193. SteveM June 9, 2011 2:19 pm

    Re: Stadium at UH

On Mercer Island (WA) last summer, I was at a party at a huge park with baseball fields. I did not know that most of park was above ground on a man-mad structure. Thinking 3-dimensional– what if a large platform was built between the top of the quarry to Varsity place and University Ave? Over the parking structure, SSC, and Ching field (think covered practice field). Existing structures are untouched and a stadium with parking built on top. But can the H1 handle the traffic? The rail would have to go there for sure.

Ala Wai golf course is possible too.

  194. jm2375 June 9, 2011 2:22 pm

gigi – have them put the hurricane clips on, then make sure your insurance company knows about. you’ll get a discount on your homeowners insurance.

as much as an on-campus stadium would be nice, as someone who’s around that area almost everyday, NO WAY. traffic is bad enough as it is. Try to get out of UH on nights in the Spring when there are baseball, softball & volleyball games on at the same time.

  195. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 2:23 pm

Tear down SSC and put new one…make ’em “multi-use”!

You know, the stands could slide into different confeegarashuns….

    Uhh, try wait…..

    nvm

    🙄

  196. Kazz June 9, 2011 2:27 pm

30,000 seat football arena will sell out.

IF tailgating is allowed. IF the traffic situation is bearable (but by Hawaii standards of patience, I guess that means people would expect to leave their house in Laie 30 minutes before kickoff and expect to find a space nearest to the entrance….)

30,000 seat football arena with minimal effort to organize the routes in and out of the hypothetical stadium at Manoa will NOT sell out.

What A-House suggests is mind-boggling in the fact that of all those others that have suggested a stadium would work, they never proposed anything like it and I guarantee they never even thought about it. However, it CAN be done, but it would be the biggest project next to rail that the City and County of Honolulu and the state WILL NOT be willing to under take and pay for.

Now, that’s not me being cynical, that’s just me thinking like the current “status-quo”.

Here is what Bryant Moniz has to do to be in the conversation to be a Heisman Trophy finalist and possibly win it.

    1) UH has to be undefeasted in the regular season, 13-0

    2) Moniz’s passing statistics:

Yards Passing: at least 5,500 or more

TD passing: at least 45 or more TDs

    Interceptions: not more than 10

Passing Completion percentage: at least 67% or better

    Passing Efficiency: 175% or better

Passing yards per attempt: 8.50 or better

    3) Sacks – not more than 25

    4) Signature games: Best games are against Colorado, @ Washington, @ Nevada, and home against BYU. Possibly all 4 might be on National TV.

    5) He has to be injury free and play all 13 games.

    I

  206. d1shima (Aria'd) June 9, 2011 3:04 pm

  210. Stephen Tsai June 9, 2011 3:25 pm

Moniz is coming off a season in which he led the nation in passing.

The UH campaign should have started in January. What’s more, it needs to be aggressive — more than just a Facebook page or Twitter account.

Suppose you’re a college-football writer. Are you going to check on somebody’s Facebook page all of the time? Of course not. UH has to send out mailings, send Moniz factoids in small pizza-styled boxes, things like that.

If you’re running for office, you don’t wait for people to locate your Web site. You hit the campaign trail. You force the message on people.

But, alas, UH has no money. Maybe that’s the slogan: No Mo money, but lots of yards.

  211. d1shima June 9, 2011 3:31 pm

WR/KR Chad Owens made a highlight reel one-handed catch which got both the offence and defence excited.

  215. Garret June 9, 2011 3:43 pm

    d1shima,

But they film the commercials in the LA area, so that is where they cast kids and babies. They wouldn’t fly tons of kids from Hawaii to LA for casting tests…and it would cost them a ton to house the kids and their parents.

There is a whole industry in LA, with entire apartment complexes catering kids and their families that try to break into the industry.

  216. Garret June 9, 2011 3:46 pm

Hawaii is the only school that has offered a scholarship to safety Kendrick Mathis (from a high school in Ventura, CA)…but he’s going to camps this summer to try to earn more offers. Maybe UH wouldn’t have offered the JC DB if Mathis committed…

Sounds like Seattle will be invited to the WAC by Tuesday. The don’t play football, but it will give stability to the rest of the sports (the WAC needed to add a team in at least 1 other sport).

Seattle is expected to receive an invitation to join as a non-football member starting in 2012, according to multiple sources.

Cal State-Bakersfield and Utah Valley have also been discussed, along with a slew of FCS schools.

    d1shima,

When will UH make a commercial for Moniz? What money does UH have for that?

Colt had a *far* better year in 2006 than Moniz did in 2010 and beat a Pac-12 team in the 2006 Hawaii Bowl…and he didn’t come close to winning the Heisman. The WAC was also stronger that year with BSU getting a lot of national attention also, providing a highlight conference game. Given that, Moniz’s chances for winning the Heisman are…

  223. Garret June 9, 2011 4:02 pm

A player from California who was All-State is walking on to SMU…Someone All-State in California should be able to get a scholarship from somewhere…

Nevin, at 6-1 and a solid 215 pounds, was a bruising force from his linebacker and fullback positions. He was voted All-State and All-League Defensive Player of the Year, as the hard-hitting senior tallied a team-high 130 tackles. On offense he was voted to the All-League second team at running back, averaging 10 yards per carry (652 yards total) and six touchdowns. He also caught 20 passes for 343 yards, with three TDs.

The bigger the game, the better Nevin was. In the state championship his senior year, Nevin overwhelmed Moapa Valley on both sides of the ball. He scored three touchdowns in the game, including a 45-yard burst in the fourth quarter that helped seal Truckee’s 27-7 win. He rushed for 142 yards on 13 carries, caught three passes for 77 yards and terrorized the Pirates with his aggressive defensive play.

“He not only led by telling or showing kids how it was done, but he was one of the hardest-working guys we had, for sure,” Shaffer said. “And it’s still that way today.”

Still think it would have been a awesome project for communications, journalism, and marketing programs to have come up with a plan for Mo. Even if UH cannot use the product it would have been a great learning experience!

The NCAA, UH, and state probably have rules prohibiting that kind of inclusion, though. Too bad.

  227. Slugger June 9, 2011 4:55 pm

    Go Hilina’i!

    wafan,

UH hires students who work for them in the UHAD Marketing unit. I think those students could be used to develop a marketing program for Mo, especially if they are Business-Marketing majors. At NAU, one of our Hawaiian club members, who was also on the swim team, worked on the football TV production crew. She was a journalism-communications major and now she’s reporting and producing the news for a TV station in Yuma. Giving students the opportunity to use their schooling during internships and on-campus jobs pays in the long run for the student, and eventually, the U.

  228. Pauoa Boy June 9, 2011 4:56 pm

Does Coach Spoelstra know how to get his team to play as a team… So irritating watching all this individual play going on with Miami. No ball movement, too much isolation, players standing around, etc… Dallas is doing work playing as a team even with Nowitzki as the focal point. Miami needs to get their heads out quick or Dallas is on its way to the Championship!

  229. wafan June 9, 2011 5:05 pm

    Slugger . . .

Yep. But, that uses only a few students and their imaginations. Why not use the imaginations and skills of 100+ students from around the islands? Some of the work produced by high school kids is pretty amazing! Is it an issue of getting donations of products or paying/not paying?

I agree that the Gov. is retarded about keeping the $4million. Lets see I invest $4 milllion and in return get $30+ million for the state, but I don’t want to make the rich guy richer so I’m going to keep the $4 million. Hmm…did someone drop this guy on his head a few too many times??? Besides does this fool not understand what the Pro Bowl does for our state at all? Somebody should Carlos Mencia this guy upside the head and with a di-di-di…

  236. SteveM June 9, 2011 5:45 pm

I am not a great supporter of the guv, but this time I kinda agree.

    From the star-Advertiser…

…The Pro Bowl returned to Hawaii this year after a year’s absence, accounting for $28.15 million in visitor spending and generating $3.07 million in state taxes from those who came specifically to attend the annual all-star game, the Hawaii Tourism Authority reported in February….

Even if State got back $3.07 million in taxes, that still leaves the state piggy bank losing almost a million… and I wonder how they derived $3 million is taxes when $28.15 mil x 4.5% GET = $1.27 million. Where’s the other $1.8 million from?

Now, even though the state got $28 mil in gross revenue, which businesses got the sales dollars? Hotel, transportation, tourism-related, entertainment? I didn’t get anything (maybe that’s why I’m not in business anymore).

But it always irked me that we have to pay let the NFL come here and use our stadium…or do we collect anything there? How did this all turn around on us…?

ANYONE that suggests a stadium on campus would “work” is an idiot.

The problem is the infrastructure in and around the area.

Everyone talks up where it could fit and all that, but no one EVER talks about the roads in and out of the campus areas and what to do about the properties and bulidings as well….

    Kazz,

By the time legislation decides on a location for a new stadium, your seat will be in the handicap section. If it takes legislation 5-10 years to agree on a “yes” or “no” answer, how long will it take to agree on a location? (50+ years?) Then another 25+ years to build the stadium, going through all the red tape legislation has created.

When the rails stretches from Kapolei to UH…. then we can talk about an on campus stadium… if the rail can further extend out to Hawaii Kai or at least Kahala Mall … then you can start looking for big corporate sponsors… like Macy’s… etc…

But you would still need some kind of Express bus system from the Windward side..

D.Wade and Lebron play well when they are moving the ball around and not doing so much one on one. It’s when they try to isolate themselves and play individual style, Miami starts f’in up. Mike Bibby is a scrub and worthless… Chalmers gets burned left and right by Barea and he’s supposed to be a good defensive player. If Miami would just play team basketball they would destroy the Mavs. Carlisle has the Mavs playing the right way with everyone contributing although Dirk is the focal point. They move the ball and distribute well when on offense, which is why they get quality looks and knock down easy wide open threes on the regular. Barea and Kidd were killing it from deep, but almost every shot was pretty wide open. Plus Dirk knows when to go and when to dish it back out. Lebron has a one track mind and f’s up with dumb turnovers and is pretty much a ghost in the 4th quarter. For someone who is a former MVP, he can’t finish for crap and will never be a great player. He’s good, just not great. He may have had a triple-double but for what cause when it counts most, he turns into Casper and disappears…

    #236,

You are leaving out Transient Accommodation Tax (Hotel Tax), Fees from car rentals, airports, etc.

The TAT goes to the city but funnels through the State first…So I don’t know if that number reflects the total money the State actually realizes or if its less the TAT that the city takes. If its the later, I would be wondering too.

. el burro sabio — bottom line is that the state piggy bank losses $1 million and does not get a penny extra of the $25 million since they already got the $3 mil taxes. Now, local businesses getting $25 mil in sales is not a bad thing– but gov’t does not benefit further and is expected to pay for the salaries & services of the state employees.

    If the state was business, they’d go broke….oh, wait a minute… 😐

  258. BG June 9, 2011 7:51 pm

I believe the calculation on the taxes from $28+ mil has to use a multiplier much larger than the GET rate because the GET is paid on multiple levels as the money changes hands and not just once like a sales tax.

  259. Derek June 9, 2011 7:53 pm

#247 No, the Heisman Trophy is awarded before the bowl games. It is a long shot for Moniz, so long we shouldn’t talk about it. Moniz, himself, said the UH football team is like a bunch of cockroaches. People keep stomping on them, but they keep plugging away and they keep moving and eventually the numbers overwhelm the opposition. Interesting analogy. Personally, I think Moniz has to do something to sell himself. How about him having a couple of six shooters in his holster, in a mexican hat, boots, the whole cowboy look, etc. With his looks, mustache, and wiry hair, he could pass as a “gringo”. The UH marketing department should sieze on it and promote him w/ posters, flyers, etc. besides through the media and the internet. I tell you, he really looks like a “gringo” and I mean that as a compliment because he can be the face of the team and the program this year.

    al

Go fo da hat trick tonight.

  263. Old Diver June 9, 2011 8:25 pm

The Heisman favorites are picked by ESPN so the can promote their football telecasts. That free promotion cannot be duplicated by the UH marketing department or any athletic department. Derek was right on with his list of requirements for Moniz to even be considered. One thing was missing from Dereks list though. Charisma. As one sports writer put it, Colt is one of the most charismatic people in the world. He was a sports fan magnet like we have never seen before. I would rather see any Heisman promotion money spent on increasing salaries for the strength and conditioning coaches.

  264. Curt June 9, 2011 8:25 pm

At least the media will get a chuckle and remember Moniz, da Pizza Guy.

  265. Old Diver June 9, 2011 8:39 pm

Lebron James plays his best in a quick transition type game where he can use his strength and speed to drive to the basket. Dallas knows this and is forcing the Heat to play a half court game. While James is fast he is not quick and is easy to defend with one man. While his passing is good his inability to shoot reduces James to average status. I don’t think James is on any one’s who do you want to take the last shot list. Until he makes that list his status as a superstar is not deserved.

  266. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 9:00 pm

Today feels like Friday, because the WB feels like a ghost town.

I am surprised at how few points LeBron has been scoring in the Finals. Would he play like this if he were still in Cleveland?

I read that he and the Other Two play better when they play less like a team and let their natural abilities shine like stars.

LeBron stated in the article that focusing solely on team play was why the Heat lost so many games in the beginning of the season. Once they let loose as individual stars, they started winning.

  267. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 9:03 pm

Although Moniz doesn’t seem as charismatic as Colt, he doesn’t have the character issues that dogged Colt.

He’s never been arrested and expelled from school.

Will that be enough to place Moniz high in the Heisman race? I somehow doubt it.

  268. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 9, 2011 9:08 pm

    #267,

I don’t think those issues with Colt were a big enough reason he didn’t win the Heisman. I presume it wouldn’t help, but I doubt it hurt at the same time.

  269. gigi-hawaii June 9, 2011 9:15 pm

Well, Tim Tebow was squeaky clean compared to Colt.

I admired him for that reason and was not surprised when he won the Heisman.

    SteveM,

Say for example the $1M is spent on fixing roads. The accomplishment is fixing roads, which is a benefit to the people who drive and who built the road, and puts $1M into the local economy. The $25M should generate more wages paid to employees than the $1M does, which is a benefit to the people who are employed. Either way, government is providing a service to it’s citizens without getting anything in return. If people aren’t working, they can’t pay their rent or mortgage, let alone buy UH football tickets and fuud for their tailgates 🙂 . Yes it doesn’t sound right that we should pay the NFL to come here, but if you look at the state as one big family, the household needs to bring in more money than it sends out paying for food, cars, oil, and construction materials.

Now if you spend the $1M on public school education, I see the payback down the road, but he won’t spend it on education.

  273. el burro sabio June 9, 2011 9:26 pm

And we don’t want people to have to work until they are 84 because they can’t afford to retire.

A “gringo” is a “haole” in the lingo. Having Moniz dress up like a Mexicano is probably not the way to attract attention on the mainland, unless it’s negative attention. Sad to say, a lot of people still discriminate against Mexicans, even Mexican-Americans.

  281. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 9, 2011 10:33 pm

Several months ago, I reported on the Governor’s DESIRED plans for the Aloha Stadium property: Tear down the Stadium and build several thousand units of affordable/workforce housing units and a commercial/retail complex to serve the new community.

As for replacing the Stadium itself, that would be up to a future governor, but he would definitely like to see a much smaller stadium built out by UH-West O`ahu.

Then, two weeks ago, I called Stephen and told him that a comprehensive update on Stadium upgrades and repairs – not just turf replacement – had been made at the May Stadium Authority meeting. I asked him to see if one of the three senior writers internew Scott Chan, watch the PowerPoint, and discuss what other repairs/upgrades need to be done. I hope that this will be done because the repairs & upgrades are much more than just the turf.

If you want to read a really arse-burning comment on Abercrombie’s statements earlier today, read David Shapiro’s blog at http://blog.volcanicash.net

Abercrombie had already placed himself in my (figurative) cross-hairs with his proposals for the Aloha Stadium site, but his blatherings about the Pro Bowl have placed him beyond the pale. (unacceptable; outside agreed standards of decency)

If there is any interest on this blog and in other sport fan venues to create a petition/letter challenging Abercrombie’s statements, please let me know. I plan to send him a (real) letter, but I’ll be glad to modify it to make something others can sign.

Thus the reason Lebron will never win a Championship with that attitude. That is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever heard, you don’t win Championships if you don’t play as a team. You may get away with your stars hogging the ball in the regular season but come post season everybody needs to step their game up and play as a team. If Lebron thinks his individual skills is good enough to win Championships then were are his rings??? He already proved his skills weren’t good enough to win in Cleveland even with Shaq on board… I hate Lebron James and hope Miami would trade him for someone who wants to win… shute trade him to NY and give me Carmelo instead…

And what’s wrong with working until 84 or 94 or 104? My grandfather went to work at his store for his regular half day, had lunch with his two sons and three grandkids who were working there during the summer, and took a bus home. He lay down for his regular afternoon nap and never woke up – he was 89. My grandmother who was eight years younger than he, lived another 15 years and died in her sleep after a full day of volunteering with the pre-school run by her church.

Frankly, I cannot imagine not working until I am ready to shuff off this mortal coil – if for no other reason than making enough money to pay the rent and the zillions billed each month for utilities. Actually, I’m already scouting the nearby bridges – just in case I outlive DrDoc.

Hello there fellow internet marketer, I would like to tell you about something that has completely changed the way I’ve been doing SEO. It’s a little known but very efficient WordPress plugin called SEOPressor. It basically automates all of your on-page SEO grunt work and I’m not sure what I’d do without it. You can give it a look for yourself here. Best of luck in your marketing efforts!
