Hello and goodbye

Wideout Malcolm Lane, who did not play in 2009 to focus on academics, said he is set to rejoin the Warriors this coming semester.

Lane is on vacation in California, But he returns to Hawai‘i Wednesday.

Lane was missed the past season. His specialty was the choice route on deep patterns.

By the way, today is Malcolm’s birthday.

* * * * *

Slotback Jon Medeiros said he has decided not to participate in Pro Day, effectively ending  his playing career. Sure, it would have been a long shot for Medeiros to reach the next level — perhaps as unlikely as his journey from walk-on to starting right wideout.

Medeiros was a study in perseverance. After a year a Western Oregon, he returned to Hawai‘i. He attended the walk-on tryout, earning a berth on the team. For three years, he paid for his tuition and school expenses working in UH’s maintenance department. He also saved money living at home in Kapolei and catching the bus to UH. He earned a scholarship the past summer, yet still traveled by bus, awakening at 4:30 every school morning.

He worked hard and never complained.

He is scheduled to earn a bachelor’s degree in 2010. He already has a standing offer to coach at Kapolei High.

As we used to write in school annuals: Wish you the best in your future endeavors.

It will be nice to have Lane back as an option at wideout and returner.

With all of the budget problems at UH, it is interesting to see a school like NMSU looking at UH as a big budget school.

A few issues are at the forefront, namely the future of Athletics Director McKinley Boston, who is entering his sixth year at the university. Boston is about to work with his third school president during that period, with the arrival of Barbara Couture, and oversee, yet again, a department that has experienced a fair share of financial strain in the past year.

One of Boston’s challenges has been juggling a financial situation that saw the athletics department eliminate all temporary positions as well as eight full-time employees, while reducing its budget by approximately $1.5 million in 2009. Boston didn’t rule out more change on the horizon as the Aggies move into the new year.

The financial crunch hasn’t come without hardships on the athletic programs. Ultimately, recruiting budgets are slashed and coaching staffs can feel underpaid or underappreciated.

  3. Garret December 28, 2009 8:41 am

“I do have concerns,” said volleyball coach Mike Jordon, who recently lost his director of operations, Tricia Wright. “We have a shorthanded staff right now and our travel and recruiting budgets have to be addressed. They’re woefully under where they have to be to compete with a team like Hawaii. I don’t think most top-40 teams in the nation are facing the same issues we’re facing right now. The university needs to make the commitment for my program to grow.”

Football coach DeWayne Walker, who was in his first season as a head coach last year, said the initial experience of working with a constrained budget should help him in 2010.

Walker came to NMSU from UCLA, where he served as the Bruins’ defensive coordinator.

“Things that are a given at a BCS school, it was more of a challenge than I initially thought,” Walker said. “I have a better understanding of it going into year-two, though. I know my resources, I know who I can trust and who to listen to. That should make for an easier transition this year.”

Reposting from the end of the last blog. It is nice that they added a team from Australia to the Samoa Bowl this year, so go along with the teams from American Samoa and Hawaii.

Samoa Bowl VII 2010 kicks off this week as top-notch high school football and volleyball athletes arrive from Hawaii in preparation for a week chock full of fun, culture, camaraderie, teamwork and competition. American Samoa is the proud host of the annual bowl event.

In addition to Team Hawaii and Team American Samoa, Team Australia is the newest addition this year joining in the week long festivities and competition— from Dec. 27— Jan. 2, with Hawaii returning home on Jan. 3 and Australia on Jan 5.

  5. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2009 8:48 am

The one thing I could never figure out is how the UH budget went from $16 million after Yoshida left to more than $25 million.
It couldn’t have been just salaries. JJ’s salary went from $320,000 to $800,000, but half was paid by outside donations, so the net gain was $80,000. But say the complete raise went on the books. A $480,000 gain doesn’t equate to more than $9 million.
I’m pretty sure capital-improvement projects come out of state or university funds, not the athletic department’s.

    Happy birthday, Malcolm Lane!

Good luck after graduation, Jon Medeiros!

  7. cavewarrior December 28, 2009 8:53 am

ST: shouldn’t that info be available by FOIA? It’s been a few years since this questions was raised…I’m curious as well, since those funds apparently are not being spent on tangible things or physical items we can see. Perhaps increased cost of medical supplies?

It’s a shame Jon Medeiros’ playing career is over inasmuch as he was just peaking. He truly was a big-play and clutch producer on the field. If he should embark on a career as a coach, I’m sure he’ll be successful if only for the fact that he is the epitome of perseverance and a Spartan work ethic. What a tremendous role model he’s been for other players and I’m sure he’ll be able to coach future players into being able to maximize their talents and reach their true potential. Good luck to him.

  13. EH NO MAKE ! December 28, 2009 9:11 am

    Mr. Tsai,

I agree 100%, Jon Medeiros should be the poster player for “never giving up”.

Great story, seemingly great guy that came into one heck of a player.

    Who Dat … ?

Sorry my friend, no can do lunch at 12:00 in Aiea because I need to work.
Some other time, that would be nice.

  14. Garret December 28, 2009 9:23 am

Thank you to Jon Medeiros for all of the sacrifices he made for the Warrior program. He was an excellent contributor–for example, without his stepping up UH would probably have lost at SJSU this year.

I hope that he gets his degree next year and does well in whatever career he chooses. He’s already shown the work ethic and dedication needed to succeed.

  15. Garret December 28, 2009 9:26 am

    ST,

Regarding your #5 post, didn’t UH have to add several sports due to Title IX rules? Or did all of the administrators get big raises at the time that HF got his raise?

  16. Garret December 28, 2009 9:27 am

Did UH raise its tuition significantly during the previous 10 years? If so, that would show up as a significant increase in the Athletic Department budget–they are charged full tuition for the scholarships.

  17. Manoa Mist December 28, 2009 9:31 am

Medeiros may not play pro ball but every company in Hawaii is looking for employees with his kind of character. If they ain’t downsizing, laying off people, furloughing, making you pay more for your medical, freezing salaries or closing the business.
Sheesh, been that kind of year.
Still, Happy Holidays to Stephen Tsai and his merry band of Tsaikos.

  18. Garret December 28, 2009 9:32 am

This Advertiser article states that under Hugh Yoshida, UH’s Athletic Department budget went from $8.7 million to $16 million. That looks like a similar annual increase to the Athletic Budget at UH…which indicates something systemic like tuition increases and Title IX compliance requirements.

Every time UH raises tuition prices or adds fees, that increases the Athletic Department budget. One thing that always goes up is scholarship expenses.

Under Yoshida, who had previously served as associate athletic director, the number of UH intercollegiate sports has expanded from 16 to 19 while the budget has grown from $8.7 million to $16 million.

  19. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 9:46 am

Amazing how Hugh kept the department from going into the RED for all his years except for the 9/11 year. Since then, I think the only year that the UH Athletic Dept. hasn’t been in the red since was the Sugar Bowl year.

  20. SteveM December 28, 2009 9:47 am

    Good morning everyone!

Best of luck to Jon Medeiros in his future endeavors!

  21. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 9:48 am

    Manoa Mist..

It isn’t the company that’s making employees pay more for their medical.. it’s the Medical plan companies that are doing so. My wife and I are self-employed. Our medical went up 25% this year and our benefits still went down.

  22. A-House December 28, 2009 9:58 am

Welcome back Malcom Lane and Happy Birfday!!

Thank you to Jon Medeiros for all your contributions to the Warrior program and best of everything in all your future endeavors!!

  23. el guapo December 28, 2009 10:00 am

In addition to the increases in tuition that Garret brought up, there were complaints that out-of-state students are not paying their fair share. Guess what – out-of-state tuition goes up.
The maintenance problems of student housing are widely documented. Student housing is supposed to be a self-supporting operation, and generally they have to pay for their own capital improvements. Guess what – the cost of housing goes up.
The bookstore is supposed to be a self-supporting operation. The cost of books goes up.

What is the common theme in all of this? Who was/is ultimately responsible for these actions? Therein lies the problem.

  24. el guapo December 28, 2009 10:00 am

  26. d1島 December 28, 2009 10:15 am

    el guapo,

From what I see there are many “vicious circles” involved. For instance, the cost of textbooks seems to be skyrocketing as more and more instructors/professors feel compelled to supplement their salaries by publishing their own texts for their courses.

The bigger picture regarding the cost of education might be found in the increasing amounts of gov’t. involvement in financial aid, but that’s another story!

  27. d1島 December 28, 2009 10:15 am

Mahalo and best wishes to Jon Medeiros.

Under Yoshida, they added two sports (soccer, women’s track and field), plus they opened the arena.
Not saying there was any mis-use, I’m just curious as to how the budget grew so much.

This is of course not true. The offer was taken off the table after Manley did not accept after one year. And let’s be clear about every scholarship offer, they are all take it or leave it. This is true at every university.

  44. postmanke December 28, 2009 11:48 am

No not true, only an assumption.. =)

But really, offering a Junior in high school a “take it or leave it”

I am sure there’s some sort of NCAA rules with offering a scholarship more than twice to a player, and Mack’s method to his madness, but whatever the story, Manley’s offer was taken by Spain. sometimes you play hardball and gamble you win, and sometimes you end up with a QB that doesn’t even make honorable mention..

With VJ Feheko seeming to favor Texas Tech in his recruiting selection, it will be interesting to see if Mike Leach being suspended will mix things up.

All scholarship offers are take it or let it, because at some point the recruits have to make up their minds. There are no open ended offers. Teo had to make his mind up on LOI day and if he didn’t the scholarship would have gone to someone else, just ask UCLA.

Electrical closet is where some kids have turn up dead. All the circuit breakers are there… they could get fried — especially if the lights are turned off in the closet … long term exposure to the concentration of electromagnetic waves in that location may have some other effects, as well.

The Lubbock newspaper has more details about the Mike Leach situation. It is an interesting coincidence that Craig James is scheduled to cover Texas Tech’s bowl game…I’m guessing that he’ll have to be reassigned.

Tech football coach Mike Leach was suspended for ordering a player to stand in shed at the Tech football practice facility for two hours, then repeating the punishment two days later because he felt the player was faking an injury that happened during practice on Dec. 16, the Avalanche-Journal has learned.

Leach had until Monday to write an apology and when he did not, the university felt it had to take action.

The player suffered a concussion at practice on Dec. 16 and Leach thought the player was faking.

The next day at practice, the player was ordered to stand in a shed. Leach had him watched and when he sat down, Leach had things removed from the shed so he could not sit down.

Two days later, Leach had the player stand in a dark room for three hours.

ESPN analyst Craig James has been taken off the network’s Alamo Bowl telecast after allegations that his son was mistreated by Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

Regarding #44, evaluating a QB has less to do with whether he is all state and more to do with other qualities. If you look at the box scores of Paradise Valley HS, you will see thay are a run-oriented offense. They run first and pass second. Second, the fact that he made second team all state as a DB means that he plays on both sides of the ball. I can only conclude that he is a superb athlete. Furthermore, he is rated by area scouts as one of the top QB prospects in Arizona, so they must know a little something about his QB’ing ability. I’m sure they are looking at things like accuracy, leadership, poise, mobility, etc. I wouldn’t be so quick to judge unless you know the whole story.

  86. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 3:36 pm

Aren’t the assistant and associate coaches all year-to-year. No real job security…no tenure. Head Coaches are multi-year, renegotiable…but no tenure or guarantee.

  92. whitey December 28, 2009 4:03 pm

there are many more hs players who will not be offered anything, but should that stop them from playing?? first things first, make sure your grades meet which ever school you plan to attend, do well on the SAT, and then communicate with the school’s fb program.

  93. whitey December 28, 2009 4:05 pm

hs grades, jc grades, SAT results, essay test by UH are all academically required to enter UH, so you can be the best player on this planet, but if you fail any of those, you ain’t going to get accepted.

  94. whitey December 28, 2009 4:06 pm

college entry required academia, then talent, pro entry requires talent and no brains.

I guess even BSU is not immune from handing out disciplinary action on players. They knew the rules, screwed up, and now pay the penalty

  97. whitey December 28, 2009 4:12 pm

the sad part for these 3 players from BSU is that they will miss a marquee game, but this may be their only chance of pariticpating in one cause there is going to be sum challenges starting in 2010.

One more thing when looking at QB prospects, It seems that Kevin Spain is the #1 rated QB prospect out of Arizona from Scouts (rated #58 nationally; Manley is #81 as a comparison). There’s only 2 AZ Prep QBs that are nationally rated and both of them have committed. Kevin to UH and Chase to NAU. So I wouldn’t put a lot of weight on whether he made all-state as a QB. The kid plays on both sides of the ball and made second team as a DB. That tells me that kid can play and apparently our coaches think so too. It probably doesn’t hurt also to get an endorsement from Dennis Erickson at ASU.

I’m not judging, it is what it is. We offered, he took, we got! if he didn’t make honorable mention for whatever reason, so be it. I’m sure he’s an amazing athlete playing both ways. I’m sure we’ll find a way to turn him into a hard hitting DB / OLB by the time he’s done. Brain Urlacher in the making!

  108. whitey December 28, 2009 4:20 pm

We don’t know the true story at TT, but it is truly sad to see something like this in today’s college fb programs. By the way, isn’t b knight at TT??

  109. Jason December 28, 2009 4:21 pm

So Adam James is a system wide receiver? 😛

  110. whitey December 28, 2009 4:21 pm

  115. postmanke December 28, 2009 4:25 pm

Wonder if the bump in the 2001 Athletic budget had anything to do with all those professional volleyball players we recruited in Europe?

  116. Garret December 28, 2009 4:26 pm

    Jason,

Adam James seems like someone who can contribute at receiver in a run-and-shoot type of scheme, but SMU ran a veer-option based offense when James was a senior.

It would have been interesting to see if JJ would have offered Adam James…especially if Craig James had a voice in the hiring process for JJ at SMU.

  117. whitey December 28, 2009 4:26 pm

d1, that’s right about SMU and how they got the death penalty.

  118. Garret December 28, 2009 4:27 pm

    whitey,

Adam James entered Texas Tech a year or 2 before JJ was hired at SMU, so JJ had no role in them not recruiting James. Also, Bob Knight retired awhile ago.

  119. Jason December 28, 2009 4:27 pm

Actually, I was mistaken—I thought Craig James made comments against UH’s R&S system. But I looked it up, his comments were about the defense. Never mind. 😛

  120. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 4:27 pm

So with all the TT negative waves, maybe VJ will think long and hard about playing for home town Warriors.

How can Vili the Warrior not have any of his sons wearing the green and black? VJ, will you be the first?

  121. whitey December 28, 2009 4:28 pm

  160. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 6:05 pm

Offensive tackles that can hold the line from a Georgia rush. But we may need some run stuffers and DEs that can put pressure on the QB.

  161. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 6:08 pm

After watching that freshman QB at SMU disect Nevada, I like the open competition at QB. It should make every QB better. Who will rise to the top?

What’s up with the GA position?

  163. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 6:12 pm

We need another Niko Noga in the middle (a man-boy) and some fast DEs that can put pressure on the opposing QB…a Warrior defense that lays a hurt 🙂

  164. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 6:15 pm

Ah… gotta love this blog… sometimes it takes a day or two.. but some way.. some how.. somebody always finds a way to clear the air…

Thank you AZ for your analysis of QBs…

  165. protector December 28, 2009 6:19 pm

    AZWARRIOR22 on #101 & whitey on #151,

Thanks for the info on Kevin Spain. Until now hadn’t heard anything about him / missed it. I’m even more jacked that he’s coming here. It seems we have some talented freshmen QBs that are gutsy enough to want to come here & compete in a logjam. As I’ve said before, we’re set for at least the next 4 years (at QB) without having to recruit (even one)for at least the next 2-3 years. I hope that means we can concentrate on O-Line, D-Line & more lock-down CBs.

    whitey on #160,

I still want Mercado–He’d be a difference maker. If we had had him this year, we would’ve been in the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl, but he probably wouldn’t have prevented us from getting shellacked by JJ’s team IMHO.

    AZWARRIOR22 on #163,

Agree with you, but one reason Padron was so successful was because of the near flawless pass-blocking by their O-Line. This is why Coach Shaw has a big challenge ahead getting the Line ready to slow -down USC’s pressure. We need some OTs that can give some semblance of pass protection (Kia obviously was not the answer this season); in this case at least there should be some addition by subtraction. We also need to have a Center emerge from the returnees; Estes was always a
security blanket that we won’t have anymore. Does anyone remember who was back-up Center this year? Was it Hansen?

  168. whitey December 28, 2009 6:48 pm

  203. whitey December 28, 2009 7:16 pm

d1, what i said, these tsaikos are good!!!!!!

  204. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 7:17 pm

Whitey… and why can’t they schedule me in Kaneohe.. instead of town? sheesh.. I live three blocks from the Kaneohe court house.

  205. whitey December 28, 2009 7:18 pm

d1, ralph went shopping for new ‘puter, but unfortunately he don’t know how to hook it up and waiting for mih to help him

  206. whitey December 28, 2009 7:20 pm

mih, has the state done anything logically??? they always look for the hardest way to do things cause if it is to simple, it will not work for them because they are plenty smart people who work for them and it would insult their intelligence.

  207. Ralph December 28, 2009 7:20 pm

wow, this game is bad basketball. both teams have issues handling the ball and what’s with all the charging fouls for both teams.

  208. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 7:21 pm

My 8 year ol boy is into Mario Brothers WII and I tell him that I played Donkey Kong at Pucks Alley back in my days in Manoa. Let’s see there was Tron, Galaga, Tempest…

  209. whitey December 28, 2009 7:21 pm

mih, i shouldn’t say those things cause i use to work for the state, but what the hell if it is true, stick to my post. right?????

  210. whitey December 28, 2009 7:23 pm

d1, ralphie is at the game and his ‘puter is working. yeeesh!!!!

  211. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 7:25 pm

Whitey.. I’m just gonna be my natural self when I show up at whatever time they need me.. if it’s early AM.. I’m gonna be one grouchy SOB.

  212. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 7:27 pm

And those walks to Waikiki…what are those 2 streets that run parallel and the one on the back side is where all friendly ladies asked you if you wanted a date? I remember walking back and seeing along the canal some of the largest sewer rats 🙂

  213. Koa-mahu December 28, 2009 7:33 pm

    Az – hotel street?

  214. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 7:34 pm

Not Hotel St…One was Kalakaua and the other I can’t remember.

  215. Ralph December 28, 2009 7:37 pm

    Kuhio Avenue

  216. expat December 28, 2009 7:46 pm

If Leach is really out at Texas Tech I doubt they will end up having to pay him much, if anything. He would be fired for cause and if they didn’t have a general clause in his contract to deal with this kind of situation it would be very surprising. That would be another high profile coaching position open though which would make for some interesting shuffling in the Head Coaching ranks. You would think that they are high profile enough that they would be looking to poach another head coach rather than a coordinator.

Interesting that a kid who graduated from St Louis and attended JC will be one of the starting QBs in the Rose Bowl. I guess you could generally say that he was underrated coming out of high school.

  217. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 7:47 pm

Hopefully out of the TT debacle, one VJ decides to be a Warrior 😉

  218. Ralph December 28, 2009 7:55 pm

KU fired Mangino for his physical contact and verbal abuse of a player or players. Leach is walking a fine line for his handling of Adam James. Here at UH, we took forever with E Bolla illness, and we ended up paying him to leave after two alleged incidents, one of sexual harassment in the form of verbal abuse and the other for a lame kick. Isn’t Leach an attorney, he must have an alibi or air tight contract that pays him off in 6 figures.

  219. (Jesse)James December 28, 2009 7:58 pm

Hey Tsaikos…how has everyone been….hope all is well.

Been busy, busy…just stopping by for a few before heading to the hospital…

d1…wait,…what? Ralph is gonna monku monku about the MBB game??? Since when does Ralph monku??? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Just kidding Ralph….

  220. Ralph December 28, 2009 7:59 pm

ADs at Kansas U. and Texas Tech acted quickly, our former AD didn’t flinch nor acted, his replacement, well ah, I wasn’t here when it happened so I got to act slowly, with due diligence or I hope the new Chancellor take over the hot seat.

  221. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2009 8:00 pm

Actually, I don’t have anything against LOL or his posts. They’re pretty interesting.
But when somebody starts off by saying he’s being SMU’d, well, then I SMU ’em. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
We’ve only actually SMU’d one person — Barry Markowitz, after he complained about me to Brand X. Sheesh. But I like Barry and I decided I’d let him back. But he doesn’t want to come back.
So here’s how you get deleted:
    • You annoy the regulars.
    • You annoy me.
    * You write a post, then say, “lol.” When somebody ELSE says something funny, lol is appropriate. Or if it actually is funny. But if you write: “the coach is an idiiot. lol.” Well, that just violates rules 1 and 2. It’s OK to just write: “The coach is an idiot.”
    • And no superior attitudes, even if you are superior. Remember we know who you are.
    • Also attacking spouses and high school kids is a no-no.
    • And if anybody tries to mock the rules, zappo.

  222. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:00 pm

J(J) watch out before i start on the State workers!

  223. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2009 8:05 pm

    AZwarrior22:
Nothing is going to happen for probably the next two weeks on the recruiting front.
This is a dead period. Mack is on a working-vacation for the next five days. Then he does home visits on the Mainland. Then comes the convention.
It will be interesting when the furloughs end and we can get some actual numbers on available scholarships. I made a half-hearted attempt to figure it out. I couldn’t.

  224. (Jesse)James December 28, 2009 8:06 pm

    Ralph…lucky I’m not a State worker….and work for a quasi state job… 🙂

  225. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:08 pm

Thanks, ST…we’ll just have to bide the dead period 🙁

  226. whitey December 28, 2009 8:15 pm

I was wondering why barry m neva posts here no more. too bad, cause he had sum interesting thoughts, but hopefully he can resolve his differences and come back. if he no like, well, best to you barry and hope 2010 brings you and your family much happiness and good health.

  227. whitey December 28, 2009 8:16 pm

and now work on the next milestone and get to 250 before 9pm

  228. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:16 pm

Hiram Thompson must have had a second degree concussion, he hasn’t played.

  229. Bulla December 28, 2009 8:16 pm

    ST
thanks for putting everyone in alignment for their assignment. get right, get straight, or get left…..it doesn’t matter what the ‘other side’ says, that’s why they’re on the other side.

the basketball game is so good i am watching OC12 right now, and that is more colorful, haha

just another nite in Tsaikoville, better than being lost in Farmegeddon…haha

  230. whitey December 28, 2009 8:17 pm

ST, no more contest for awhile i guess.

  231. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:17 pm

Whitey, you on one mission 🙂

    What’s da prize?

9:00 p.m. is 12 midnight here but I’m on vacation right now so no mattah to me.

  232. whitey December 28, 2009 8:19 pm

j(j) wish your mom well and get ready for the new year.

  233. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:21 pm

J(J) so you walk in the shadow of Linda Lingle and you think you are quasi qovenment worker, just because she “no listen” to the people of this State, you are still a state worker by contract.

  234. bstunna2002 December 28, 2009 8:21 pm

Any possibility if Mike Leach is let go he comes to uh as a Coach in some capacity like let’s say wr’s coach?

  235. whitey December 28, 2009 8:21 pm

AZ, this is anniversary nite for tsaikos who worked hard at posting one yr atgo. brew was one of the major poster, but haven’t seen him today. think he working.

  236. whitey December 28, 2009 8:24 pm

ralph, i not one lingle backer, but it takes a lot of people to tango and there are a lot of others who should be getting heat from the people. she has her problems, but i don’t think sum are telling the truth, but covering their arses.

  237. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:25 pm

Al this game is not a keeper, you can stop your DVR. UH 44, N 42 with 11 minutes to go.

  238. whitey December 28, 2009 8:25 pm

like workers taking furloughs and pay cut, but legislators getting a raise.

  239. Pomai December 28, 2009 8:26 pm

I wouldn’t want anything to do with Leach

  240. Slugger December 28, 2009 8:26 pm

ST ~ Thanks for the SMU clarification.

Didn’t go to the men’s BB game tonight. Saw Brandon Adams this afternoon walking with his wife. Wished him well in the game tonight. Wonder how he’s doing? Just tuned TV to the game. GO BOWS!!!

  241. whitey December 28, 2009 8:27 pm

this reminds me of how how congressional people tell us how good social security, healthcare is good for us, but they don’t participate because they have another plan which kicks us in the arse.

  242. LizKauai [iMac] Happy New Year! December 28, 2009 8:28 pm

    Ok…
spiritual walking training is a great thing but makes me tired…
Or was it trying to watch the bb game after the excitement of MNF?

Anyway… can’t even keep eyes open for a Jane Austen movie!

Nitey nite and SWEET fb recruiting dreams!

  243. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:28 pm

Kevin Spain looks like he is still growing…

On another site, it says he is 6-2/185/4.92

But another link on the same site says

QB Kevin Spain, a Hawaii commit, from Phoenix (Az.) Paradise Valley High.

Spain (6-3 195) helped PV to a 7-5 record, passing for 1,216 yards and 13 TDs.

  244. Slugger December 28, 2009 8:29 pm

    I agree, Pomai.

  245. whitey December 28, 2009 8:29 pm

ok ralph, but is uh going to win???

  246. whitey December 28, 2009 8:30 pm

LizzyK, come on you can do it. Still early and you get plenty info.

  247. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:31 pm

Whitey I agree. How’s that! The economy is what it is, tough decisions to be made, somebody has to step it up and she has. Those who do not agree need to come up with solutions and not just complain. Too many of the counter proposals and offers are proposed solutions to protect the union and not necessarily in the best interest of the citizens of Hawaii Nei.

  248. Bulla December 28, 2009 8:31 pm

    Slugger,

I agree with you and Pomai 🙂

  249. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:32 pm

I never did follow Rainbow basketball so much. I was a comped a few games working as Student Help for UHAD but they weren’t very good then. Larry Little was coach and a couple of players named Thomas Louden and Joe Frazier (not the boxer).

Now Warrior football and Rainbow baseball, I followed religiously.

  250. Pomai December 28, 2009 8:32 pm

I just finished reading J. David Millers book “Hawaii Warrior Football A Story of Faith, Hope and Redemption”, an I would recommend that all Warrior fans read it but most of all, I would like all the Powers to be read it an learn what from it.

  251. whitey December 28, 2009 8:33 pm

Wonder if going get big surf tomorrow, but will find out from Teddy C when I see him at workouts tomorrow.

  252. Slugger December 28, 2009 8:34 pm

    Kevin Spain:

Hawaii has an averge temperature of 80 degrees, unlike Paradise Valley at 100+ degrees in the late spring through early fall. It’s only cool in Paradise Valley Mall. Lucky you come Hawaii!

  253. whitey December 28, 2009 8:34 pm

    Nice going Tsaikos.

  254. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2009 8:36 pm

We’re gonna have an end-of-the-year contest, I think.
Time to clean out the cupboard.

  255. LizKauai [iMac] Happy New Year! December 28, 2009 8:37 pm

Pomai- J. David Miller is on fb and I think he would love to hear from you.

MALCOLM LANE- Hauoli Lahanau!!! Can’t wait to see you running up the field again!

  257. LizKauai [iMac] Happy New Year! December 28, 2009 8:39 pm

    Hi, ST…
man… hard to go to sleep when ST says “contest”

  258. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:39 pm

    Slugger,

You are right on about the temp in Phoenix during the summer but right now it’s cold with the lows in the 30’s. And a short trip up the I-17 to Flagstaff and we can play in the snow.

  259. OldDiver December 28, 2009 8:39 pm

    Regarding # 244

I was wondering about Kevin Spain, played DB but has a listed 40 time of 4.92. Either the receivers in that league are 6’2″ and 280 lbs or he ran it in the sand.

  260. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:40 pm

Whitey Nash scheduled the cream puff, he better win. He needs 18 wins for a roll over in his contract and he got to schedule all of his opponents. Most of whom come into the Stan Sheriff with losing records.
He is another State employee collecting a six figure pay check, and probably earns more than the Governor but a little less than macho J(J).

  261. Rob25 December 28, 2009 8:40 pm

Ralph…you better back off with the State workers comments. Don’t stereotype everyone! I’m gonna let KK start calling you Grummy again!

  262. Rob25 December 28, 2009 8:42 pm

I need to think of questions to ask Charlie Wade tomorrow since I won’t be able to listen live. I wonder what I could ask him….

did you live in J Hall or Gateway? did you make it to any of our ‘toga’ parties, niko would bring his brothers and that’s all she wrote……..good memories, what i do remember….i was ‘studying’ so much back then, and do you remember ST at Ka Leo? he looked the same, like curtis was there at the same time i think……

  270. jm2375 December 28, 2009 8:49 pm

    Howzit guys!

Long day at work. Relaxing for a bit watching bb game before I do some more work. 🙁

Re: dorms – I took a couple of classes at UH my senior year in HS (no mo AP at UHS). In Japanese I, our sensei had us write short paragraphs about whatever. One guy lived in J Hall. All I remember was he was talking about the dorm food – “SAGA – Soviet Attempt to Gag Americans”. The whole class bus’ out laughing so hard, the sensei from next door had to come tell us to keep it down!

BTW, is Lutu Jr on scholarship now? Just wondering…

  271. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:50 pm

    Bulla,

Yeah, Fred was one good ping pong playah. You remember that piano that was in the same room as the ping pong table. My roomy used to play the Commodores at night to woo the ladies 🙂

  272. Stephen Tsai December 28, 2009 8:54 pm

I’ve got a Colt Brennan autograph on a “Colt for Heisman” poster. Sounds like a prize, no?

  273. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 8:54 pm

    Bulla,

I was at Gateway. The first semester, we shared a bathroom, with Dennis Oda, photographer at that other paper. I remember the toga parties but I don’t think I indulged.

  274. Ralph December 28, 2009 8:55 pm

the Stan Sheriff Center looks great with all green seats, unfortunately I can see a lot of them while the game is being played. I had hoped the seating in the lower bowl of Aloha Stadium and the Murakami stadium would have been green when they were opened. Murakami Stadium started with blue seats and blue outfield walls, I thought the architect was a BYU grad.

  275. OldDiver December 28, 2009 8:56 pm

    Bulla,

I remember reading your posts a couple years ago concerning certain strength exercises you had your son doing to increase speed, flexibility and power. If this is not a question you wish to answer I will understand. Do you expect UH to provide the kind of strength and conditioning program that you will be satisfied with? This is of course a purely subjective question.

  276. jm2375 December 28, 2009 8:58 pm

Off-topic – anybody see Avatar yet? Is the IMAX version worth the extra $$? I heard the lines at Dole were verrrrrry long this weekend.

    Hey whitey – 300 by 10pm?

  280. Slugger December 28, 2009 9:08 pm

    AZ,

I used to live in Flagstaff. I don’t miss the snow shoveling. Didn’t like the heat of the desert. I’d tolerate it to go to the D-Backs games, though.

Good to see the Bows play well in the second half tonight. Yay!

  281. madeinhawaii December 28, 2009 9:09 pm

    Dorms…

Didn’t all the bathroom walls have graffiti that said.. .”Flush twice, the cafeteria is on the other end of the building.”

  282. d1島 December 28, 2009 9:10 pm

    Nice win ‘Bows! 🙂

  283. Ralph December 28, 2009 9:11 pm

  284. AZWARRIOR22 December 28, 2009 9:13 pm

    Slugger,

I’m thinking about driving up this week so the kids can enjoy the snow. Do you recommend any good places? I’m not that familiar with Flagstaff, other than being a small city. I’ve ski’ed at Snow Bowl once and cross country at Mormon Lake.

  285. whitey December 28, 2009 9:18 pm

i have all the faith in mr. tommy heffernan, i believe he is still there…..things are moving forward, but according to my math, there will be 20 months of training before he can ‘officially’ play, or have the chance to play. speed + power = the kadoosh factor…..haha, just an old man thinking out loud……thanks for asking. Cross Fit training is the new rage……and effective.

got to check how g’nalo and sleeze are doing. how are you two doing???

  307. Slugger December 28, 2009 10:09 pm

    AZ,

Flagstaff has a snow play area for sledding now. I don’t know if they are charging for parking/use. Nordic Center for cross-country skiing. And the AZ Snowbowl for downhill skiing and snowboarding. I was spoiled skiing at the Snowbowl since it was 20 mins. outside of town. My friends in the Bay Area have to drive at least 4 hrs. to get to a ski resort.

There’s a small ski place outside of Williams, but it’s really small.

Let me know if you want to hang out in Flagstaff town. I can recommend a few places to eat or to stay overnight.

Lopaka43’s old neighbor lives in Flagstaff, as well as a bunch of other people from Hawaii. They’re probably getting together this weekend to make mochi. (The Uno’s have a machine…)

  308. whitey December 28, 2009 10:12 pm

  309. Slugger December 28, 2009 10:13 pm

    whitey,

No, I’ve never met Warren S. of Pine Canyon. I don’t think I know where Pine Canyon is…I know where the town of Pine is…

    AZ,

The woman who managed Mormon Lake Lodge used to live in Hawaii. I think she might still be there.

  310. whitey December 28, 2009 10:13 pm

not bad, going do something. see you all later

  311. whitey December 28, 2009 10:15 pm

slugger, pine canyou is a high maka maka resort area in flagstaff and have probably the best golf course in AZ. Warren is the GM.

  312. Slugger December 28, 2009 10:18 pm

Are we shooting for 400 tonight?

  313. Slugger December 28, 2009 10:22 pm

    whitey,

Ooohhh, I think I know where that g.c. is…it’s on the west side. No, I’ve not met Warren, but one of the kid’s in the Hawaii club knows him. Kai’s talked about golfing there. I lived on the east side of town in Flag’s first g.c. development & the only public course.

    Stephen Tsai:

    December 28th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

We’ve only actually SMU’d one person — Barry Markowitz, after he complained about me to Brand X. Sheesh. But I like Barry and I decided I’d let him back. But he doesn’t want to come back.
So here’s how you get deleted:
    • You annoy the regulars.
    • You annoy me.
    • Also attacking spouses and high school kids is a no-no.

Apparently there was more to that story about Brand X and HA in negotiating terms for his work for each. Barry continues to work for SB as a Stringer.

He traveled to Samoa with the Gov on the 1st Coast Guard C-130 to respond. Many of the first photos from that disaster were on the news that eve. PacWest Magazine featured his Samoan Tidal Wave video footage on a recent special. CNN used his videos as well thru out.

The guy works his tail off for the love of his craft, and gives some of us Tsaiko’s his insightful videos and sideline photos as a treat. Stubborn as all get out, but the man does have his pride and his ohana to protect. I doubt if he will ever come back to post, and that’s too bad.

I’ve only made pecan pie once. When I lived in the Ozarks we used to collect wild hickory nuts. Smaller than pecans, but the same shape and slightly similar in taste.

Night, whitey! Let me know if you’re going to Flagstaff this coming year.

  326. Slugger December 28, 2009 11:11 pm

I think I’m going to call it a night also.

    jm2375 on #277,

Saw Avatar twice at Signature Theaters@ Pearl City Highlands Center, but not IMAX. The movie was visually stunning & magnificent in most every way! They did not skimp at all in making this movie (estimates are 300+ million) and you know that any producer who makes a movie longer than 2 hours is not in it solely for the money aspect (one would recoup money a lot faster by making a 90 minute movie that allows more showings throughout the day). I know most people balk at sitting through a movie 2 hours and 40 minutes long, but being a movie buff, I savored every minute. I would think the IMAX version would be impressive. I was kind of curious about the 3D version, but it costs more to view it.

Good Morning Tsaiko Nation, I have sucessfully made it back with Mother Sanchez personal belongings / urn and ashes. The respect and love given to her during this unfortunate passing has been “OVERWEALMING” with adulation and sincere condolences.

I would like to thank ALL of you for yor heartfelt words, prayers and sincerity during this most difficult time in my life. You good folks were TREMENDOUS during my grief as when I flew that long journey to San Francisco all 21 pages of your thoughts and prayers flew with me with the Tsai Meister blown up picture of my smile gracing the front cover.

In HONOR of my moms passing my love one up North created a memorial guest book of expressing thoughts and condolences. If you may type http://www.marinij.com it will take you to the marin county on line newspaper. Put the mouse hand on the word “obituaries” top of page and click on “view & sign guest books”. Search by last name in box type “Sanchez” and click search. Graciela Sanchez name will appear in blue coloring, click on the word “display” as her book will appear. Sign in guest book is to the right IF you good folks will be so kind of your thoughts and prayers I will be so “HUMBLE” of your Aloha love to my “HERO” !

Twenty days has gone by since her passing and I have been managing day by day. Mother Sanchez was the ONLY parent in my life and she smiled beautifully 33 years ago endorsing my national letter of intent to become a “Rainbow Warrior” as she allowed me to CONSUME your aloha spirit in which still TODAY I live and breathe your polynesian hospitalty.

MAHALO to all of you for just taking the time to read my words and grace me with your kind thoughts and Aloha Spirit. My LOVE for you good folks is TREMENDOUS and I can’t thank you enough for your prayers and condolences during this difficult time in my life. God has a “LEGEND” in Heaven with him and her armour shield guides me everyday in life.

Vaya Con Dios Tsaiko Nation and “THANK YOU” Always !

I agree enough already… hoping this recruiting season has players labeled as “first team” “all-state” “all- conference” next to their name when introduced in the blog

and when you look at what we’ve got coming in, the Washington and Arizona kids who wanna be Warriors, and noting they’re looking like really great ballers. add em to some stout locals, playing to an audience of one, all i gotta say is…

    Go Warriors!!!

  350. d1島 December 29, 2009 6:37 am

    NYUH,

As always, the secret is getting the “X’s and O” right! 😉

    Really gotta go now…..

  351. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2009 6:38 am

    Kekoa:
Here’s the story on the SMU/Barry.
I go to WAC media day in Utah. There are stacks of media guides. The schools don’t want to take them back because they bulk-shipped them to the site but would have to bring them back as baggage. So they leave them in the media room. Since I always pack an extra bag, I grabbed the extra (and unwanted) UH media guides. I brought them back, then gave them away as blog prizes. Barry complained because he didn’t get a media guide. So he sends a letter of protest to UH and to Brand X editors. So UH and Brand X ask me: Why is he complaining to us and not to you. I say: What are you talking about? They tell me, then I issued the first SMU.

  352. bighilofan2 December 29, 2009 6:38 am

    Coach Medeiros….

D1: Yes, I left out that crucial information. Hopefully Shaw can pull it together. He did a great job last year as the OL improved significantly. I take it they were also working with the backups, grooming them to take over this year.

  359. I Love Pecan Pie December 29, 2009 3:49 pm

    No Pecan Pies in Maui?
Hmmm…ok you yungsters graduating with no jobs,
go to Maui and bake’shake pecan pies, and other
goodies. btw Don Quijote here didn’t have any today, too. Darn.
btw, my couzin in Wash DC says there will be a
wheat shortage next year due to some sort of
“rust” disease in the “steppes” and China will want
to import tons from us. Trouble is, the USA hasn’t
much because of corn for fuel and soybeans using
up the available farm lands. I wonder if you can raise
    wheat in Hawaii???

Hi – very good web site you have made. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to write a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor for a merchandising firm. I have always enjoyed playing with computing machines and am attempting to learn computer code in my free time (which there is never enough of lol).
