Word on the boulevard is UH is planning to accept pre-Christmas deposits to purchase season tickets for UH football games. The Norm Chow era has started.

* * * * *

Oh, wait. The Chow era  begins in another 10 days.

While Chow has signed a five-year contract (worth $550,000 per year, plus incentives), the deal does not trigger until New Year’s Day.

So, for those wondering how Chow can work for two teams, the answer is: He’s not. He will coach Utah’s offense through the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl while “volunteering” at UH until his official hire date.

I cannot understand why all of the ex. BYU players have a little smirk on their face. Do they know something that we don’t know?

  19. Stephen Tsai December 22, 2011 7:18 am

Only former BYU player I know is Barrett Awai, and he’s always smiling.

  20. mikey December 22, 2011 7:21 am

Last night as I was going to dinner at Bernini’s I had to go around the block twice to find a parking space. I found one one right in front of Hi Life? I didn’t know what it was at first but lots of people was going in and out of the store late at night…

Then I recalled ST had posted a Hi Life logo on this blog yesterday and ping! I connected!

    Thanks Stephen!

I went into the store and dam there were a lot of people in the store and dark Green shirts stacked high, asked for Extra Large but they told me the lady behind you bought the last 4… UMMMMM OK give me Large then… OK you got the last large… Yes!

But if you want some they’re printing more before store opens at 10:00 AM this morning…

Good Luck… It was a mad house for late Christmas shopping gifts.

  21. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 7:24 am

Jeez! Some UH students are even complaining about Norm Chow’s $550K salary!! They need to get out of the rain at Thomas Square, take a shower, get a square meal, get a good night sleep.

  22. kakaako kid December 22, 2011 7:26 am

If I were a BYU fan I would also be happy to receive 10% of a half mil. White shirts for everyone!

  23. Stephen Tsai December 22, 2011 7:29 am

    UH students?

    It’s the holiday break.

The campus is a ghost town.

If you’re a college student and not out having fun during break, well, that’s just disappointing.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid December 22, 2011 7:30 am

    Lehua on now…

  25. LizKauai (iPad) December 22, 2011 7:34 am

    Dang! Missed Lehua!

    Good morning everyone!

So many smiling faces today… Or was that smirking?

We made our bed and we gonna lay in it, I guess…

    GO WARRIORS!!

  26. mikey December 22, 2011 7:34 am

I didn’t think any students was left on UH Campus except maybe jocks working out…

  27. mikey December 22, 2011 7:38 am

OSD are you student or school administrator? Or R U the fix teeth Dave?

Like to meet you one day…

  28. mikey December 22, 2011 7:38 am

OSD, have a feeling I’ve met you already…

  29. Bugaz December 22, 2011 7:43 am

So how is recruiting going to work?

  30. Bugaz December 22, 2011 7:45 am

Big push during Jan or the current staff still going after guys?

  31. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 7:46 am

I guess some students will never be happy until tuition is free for everyone.

Anyway, back to more positive and productive things.

Mickey: Graduated from Manoa back in the stone ages and also taught there as a disposable instructor for a number of years before put out to pasture 🙂

  32. Bugaz December 22, 2011 7:47 am

I’m thinking there has to be some level of interest change since the announcment of Coach Chow

  33. Kevin December 22, 2011 7:48 am

Where are the students making noise about the salary?

Like ST said, they got other things to worry about right now.

    Any articles any links?????

Besides, more ASUH people making noise if anything.

THE ASUH IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STUDENT BODY.

  34. PolyMom December 22, 2011 7:52 am

Wow you guys are up so early! These guys making the shirts are they paying any money to the football team? Or just making money for themselves.

  35. Keoni Ana December 22, 2011 7:58 am

    I agree 100% with #33 Kevin .

ASUH does not represent the UH Manoa student body…period.

  36. koakane December 22, 2011 8:02 am

    morning today looking mighty fine

starting off good so far with some nice music and promising news about tics.

    somebody listening at UH

    morning again 808

  37. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:05 am

reading comprehension strikes again, thomas square is where dey stey.

  38. Kevin December 22, 2011 8:05 am

    Polymom,

Those shirts do not bear the UH logo or any trademarked references to the University of Hawaii and/or it’s athletic programs so that’s a BIG indicator that the company selling them does NOT have the UH license to sell official UH or NCAA branded merchandise.

A loose reference like “CHOW TIME” or “BOWS BFOR HOS”, “RUSH THE FIELD”, “BUCK FOISE”, “NOTRE LAME”, etc… are clever for them in that the references are OBVIOUSLY related to UH football, UH games and or gameday situations, BUT with the use of plain font, but keeping the shirt colors in the offical school colors green and white, it’s obvious they attract UH fans.

So, without a UH merchandising license, the makers of these shirts are gaining profit for themselves, unless otherwise noted like they claim a portion of the proceeds goes (fill in blank).

  39. Bugaz December 22, 2011 8:06 am

Hopefully Poutasi enjoyed his visit and has stronger interest with Coach Chow at the Helm.

  40. d1shima December 22, 2011 8:09 am

Good news about season tickets. 🙂

  41. J December 22, 2011 8:13 am

SAN locations: Doubletree in Mission Valley at Hazard Center is good location, maybe a little $$. It’s right across the street from a trolley stop. Decent sports bar on the same property (Randy Jones All-American Grill). There might be a chance that part of the center will be undergoing renovation/new construction but they’ve been saying that for years… Town & Country has a lot of space, also near the Fashion Valley Trolley Station (one stop away from Hazard Center). Trolleying to downtown from Mission Valley will take a little longer on weekends unless there’s a major event (Charger game, Padre game, Comic-Con, etc) when MTS runs the special event red line (no need to transfer in Old Town).

  42. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 8:13 am

I was at a local establishment last night in the UH area and overheard some grad students (?) complaining about “a half million dollars that could go to better things on campus.” It was rather entertaining and humorous to listen to.

I believe there are a couple of comments in the SA to that effect from some readers (there always are).

    Anyway, it’s the holiday season!

  43. Kevin December 22, 2011 8:16 am

    Couch Potato,

No it doesn’t not for me. Should be more clear by the author.

OSD claimed UH students making noise about Chow’s salary, but did not specify where it is.

OSD has made references to UH students, generalized and stereotyped references to hippies occupying Thomas Square Park SEVERAL times in past blogs.

    Structure of his post:

    Old School Dave:

    December 22nd, 2011 at 7:24 am

Jeez! Some UH students are even complaining about Norm Chow’s $550K salary!! They need to get out of the rain at Thomas Square, take a shower, get a square meal, get a good night sleep.

If he actually did mean the UH students are at Thomas Square Park complaining about Chow’s salary then perhaps he should have said it like this:

Jeez! Some UH students are at Thomas Square Park complaining about Norm Chow’s $550K salary!! They need to get out of the rain, take a shower, get a square meal, get a good night sleep.

There is a difference between the two statements considering the author’s past references to UH students and Thomas Square Park again. Thomas Square Park to the author is a point of reference to stereotype the “deadbeats” and their version of the Occupy Wallstreet Movement and people under the age of 25 that supposedly have nothing better to do.

  44. Kevin December 22, 2011 8:19 am

    Old School Dave,

Thank you for clarification as to where you say you heard such dialogue. How did you know they were grad students though?

Anyway, grad students… Oh yeah, they got some opinionated ones. Like the woman that flashed back to the 60’s and flower power and crap during the UH BOR meeting when they were discussing and voting on the student fee.

This woman (grad student) proceeded to mock a student-athlete, that spoke after her that WAS for the fee.

    Got some characters.

  45. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:20 am

too bad uh, rainbowtique, or any of the licensed companies aren’t as savvy as the butigroove guys and take advantage of the current state of affairs.

    entrepreneurship. snooze you loose.

  46. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:24 am

Kevin, one can infer by his post that it was thomas square. however, due to further detailed info, the case is solved.

  47. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 8:27 am

Kevin: Sorry to stir up things. Just relaying what I heard last night. Should chose my words more carefully – a group of UH students – instead of UH students in general. Sorry about that. JFYI, the group of individuals did seemed to know a lot about specific programs on campus – lots of grad student talk.

Of course everyone has a right to their own opinions.

  48. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 8:29 am

    GAs or TAs?

  49. BigWave96744 December 22, 2011 8:29 am

I predict the next RB coach will be Mark Atuaia… Just Saying 🙂

  50. Kevin December 22, 2011 8:31 am

Of course anyone can infer it was referencing TSP as the location of such protest, BUT you replied:

“reading comprehension fails again” which was obviously meant for ME as I like to use that phrase a lot and I was the only one that asked where OSD heard such protest.

So I responded to the fact that you thought I wasn’t reading carefully when I clearly explained why I did not even think for one moment that it was at TSP based on OSD past loose references to TSP before.

  51. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 8:31 am

On the other side of the coin, it’s not easy being a Grad student and an underpaid Grad Assistant or Teaching Assistant with the stipends they receive. Especially in a pricey place like Honolulu.

  52. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:31 am

must be a tough job trying to hype the Hawaii bowl.

  53. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:32 am

lol, Kevin, seriously, you do take things too seriously.

  54. d1shima December 22, 2011 8:34 am

    The “What” Bowl? 😈

  55. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 8:35 am

Big Wave: Read that Mark Atuaia just got his law degree. He was a GA at BYU, but was let go by Bronco Mendenhall. Some fans were huhu when he was let go, but other say that Atuaia needs to gain some coaching experience at other schools first before he can be considered for a regular assistant job at BYU. Many such coaches will gain experience at Big Sky schools or Ricks (no longer has a football program), Snow JC, or Dixie.

  56. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:37 am

could be the least attended of all the bowls. Wahine volleyball tournament game could have a higher attendance count.

  57. BigWave96744 December 22, 2011 8:40 am

You don’t think Mark knows more about the RB position then say, uhhh, an offensive lineman?

  58. Pride. December 22, 2011 8:41 am

Hiram DeFries to follow Urban Meyer to Ohio State in an administrative position.

It was just a matter of time.

  59. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:43 am

and how convenient he is also a kahuku grad.

  60. Slugger December 22, 2011 8:43 am

    Good morning, gang!

Nalani, just caught Lehua on KFVE news. 🙂

  61. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 8:46 am

We could possibly see some of Chow’s former associates (coaches and players) from his BYU days, along with USC, as well as Utah. Should be interesting. Robert Anae (OL) seems happy to have been retained by Rich Rodriguez at Arizona.

Gotta be a feel good feeling for a Hawaii transplant like Coach Chow coming home to the islands after living on the mainland for so many years or most of his adult life. Read that Chow’s wife doesn’t like cold weather. Isn’t she a Utah girl?

  62. graham December 22, 2011 8:48 am

Anyone that has a problem with the 550,000 salary is just crazy. People that question the salary are very ignorant to the facts and should not be talking about it. The students have no right to say anything about the football team, they attendence was embarssing and they should be ashamed and also should not comment on any football related topics. Mack Brown makes 5 million a year and has hab 2 bad seasons in a row. You can’t pay a coach less than 500,000

  63. Couch potato December 22, 2011 8:48 am

i’d like to create the first locker room bulletin board motivation note:

“USC is going to wallop the WARRIORS in the coliseum”

  64. chawan_cut December 22, 2011 8:50 am

tombo ahi suggested i change my nickname to chow-on cut. not my joke. his turn to be lame.

    Good morning everyone!

    Re: #64

chawan_cut — agreed. You not lame! Well, kinda not. Sorta… 🙂

Hey, we’re both getting older in a few days.

  68. Otto December 22, 2011 9:03 am

Read the letters to the editor in today’s edition of the SA. UH parent complaing about the emphasis on UH football. At least in the paper, you have to give your name and location, rather than anonyomus postings on blogs, forums and comment sections on websites.

  69. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 9:06 am

Norm Chow used to commute from his house in Los Angeles to Utah and stay at a hotel in Utah on the days he coached… He is financially set and actually made a good deal of his fortune in the stock market. Family is really important to him.

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700103589/The-Norm-Chow-Utah-marriage-is-comfortable-for-both-parties.html

  70. jm2375 December 22, 2011 9:09 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

People who complain about salaries don’t get the concept of market rate. Seems whenever someone makes over $100K, it’s too high for some people…

  71. d1shima December 22, 2011 9:11 am

Putting a staff together is Job1

Chow said he will meet with all the members of the current UH coaching staff.

He said, ‘I won’t have a problem putting a staff together. I’ve heard from a tremendous amount of coaches from across the country.”

He said he hasn’t as yet offered a job to anyone.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/Chows_first_priority_is_hiring_a_coaching_staff.html

  72. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 9:12 am

I hope someone told him and his wife to get all the necessary shots and papers for their Samoyed dog, Yuki.

  73. Old Diver December 22, 2011 9:12 am

Accounts see salaries as an expense. Entrepreneurs see salaries as a catalyst to make money.

  74. d1shima December 22, 2011 9:13 am

PLEASE be sure a photographer is assigned to the presser today!

I’m sure Coach Chow will be dressed in appropriate Hawaii garb and there should be an opportunity to update the “file photo” 👿

  75. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 9:16 am

I’d like to see a “Green Out” at Aloha Stadium in 2012.

Anyone know when will construction of more permanent bleachers begin at Ching Field?

  76. PolyMom December 22, 2011 9:17 am

Family is very Important to Norm Chow. And so is his faith. All of his kids are great people. Like I said his son Cam is an awesome person. All of the family lives within walking distance to the family home.

To the folks complaining…give him a break. There will be lots of changes on the team. He is a no nonsense Coach. Who calls his own plays. Our DLine is really going to have to step it up.

253 days until we enter the Coliseum. I want to give them at least a fight on that field! And with no Kahlil since he is going to the NFL…his Barkleys blind side will be wide open! I love that. I got video for the team to study! LOL!

  77. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 9:18 am

Agree D1shima. Will someone please give Coach Chow a UH UA golf shirt for the press conference?

  78. Da Punchbowl Kid December 22, 2011 9:21 am

I was gonna make a remark about c_c changing his name, but it kinda lame.

  79. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 9:25 am

I guess the Next headline will be … “Utes Say Ciao to Chow… “

  80. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 9:29 am

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Wot?? Chawan is no longer lame…I thought his lameness was eternal????

    MWAAHAHAHHAA J/K C_C

  81. Will-I-Am December 22, 2011 9:31 am

    Polymom,

I love the Buti Groove shirts. Even if UH doesn’t see a dime off them I think they are great for the school. I think they bring an edgy marketing savvy to the school that the school really lacks in a lot of areas.

Knowing how supportive Buti Groove is of the program I am sure they do contribute in some form. I think it is a win, win for both parties.

  82. koakane ip4 December 22, 2011 9:34 am

wot with da fuss gangie we got coach, we got team now let’s build and move on

    IMUA UH

  83. Kevin December 22, 2011 9:36 am

No no no. Coach Chow will be sporting the UH colors for sure.

  84. koakane ip4 December 22, 2011 9:37 am

    now jj thats lame

  85. Da Punchbowl Kid December 22, 2011 9:37 am

  89. Kevin December 22, 2011 9:44 am

Would love to listen in on the exchange of ideas between Coach Chow and Rolo

If Rolo’s playbook is as extensive as some say it is, Rolo can add to Chow’s philosophy.

  90. Kevin December 22, 2011 9:45 am

    Leis on gameday???

    Eh.. no need!

  91. LizKauai (bonafide) December 22, 2011 9:47 am

Welcome home, “Sun God”, enjoy your vacay!

Speaking of college, I’d like to see UH do this:

    http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2011/12/22/work-colleges-students

“A number of non-work colleges are developing more opportunities for students to work. The University of Maine at Farmington has created more on-campus jobs because they want students to see the connections between curriculum and work.

And the University of Iowa created a pilot program where working students meet with academic supervisors so they can see the relationship between what they’re learning and their jobs.”

  92. Will-I-Am December 22, 2011 9:47 am

Remember how JJ really looked at how the team was marketed and did some changes. Hopefully Chow does the same.

Like telling the stadium to let people stand up and yell at the games instead of scolding people for being loud and telling them to sit down. Never happened to me but it does happen.

Getting all the fans at the stadium on the same page like at big schools.

  93. Pride. December 22, 2011 9:52 am

ESPN is going to cover the announcment. Wow, national news. The whole nation is anxious to see Norn Chow finally become a head coach. Can’t buy that kind of publicity for the program.

  94. Couch potato December 22, 2011 9:53 am

now how the hell-o did mini-santa-crombie get to stick his nose in the coaching biz and throw a dinner party?

all this time i don’t recall one thing abercrombie did for Warrior football. if he did then i must’ve missed reading about it.

anyone know when sand volleyball starts?

  99. cheepono December 22, 2011 10:08 am

hauoli wong. now there’s a name i haven’t heard in awhile. is he even coaching somewhere? he was a hell of a tackle.

being a fellow kailua high alum, it left a bad taste in my mouth when he transferred from UH to BYU. granted it was right before our “dark period,” but damn that still hurt.

  100. BigWave96744 December 22, 2011 10:08 am

Many felt Miano talked a good talk. I say give him a shot at DC, if he does according to his spill, he could be in line for the next HC when Norm retires. If he doesn’t live up to his title as DC, we won’t ever have to hear about the courtesy interview..

  101. Nalani December 22, 2011 10:11 am

Is it even a possibility that Mac would come back as DC? Just wondering….

  102. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 10:16 am

    Chowwwwge! (Charge…) 🙂

  103. BigWave96744 December 22, 2011 10:17 am

Hauoli started all 12 games as a frosh in 1995. He left after his recruiting coach “Wags” was fired.

Starred at BYU when Chow was the OC, then spent 5 years in the NFL

I saw that he’s currently training young high school offensive linemen

  104. Pomai December 22, 2011 10:19 am

#101 – Nalani – I don’t think so, one head coach is enough, that’s why I would like to see Tomey replaced.

  105. BigWave96744 December 22, 2011 10:20 am

Nalani, #101, yes but for the opposing team

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 10:28 am

    nalani,

Naw don’t think it would happen. Got a lot better chance of Seto coming in as DC than Mack.

  108. BleedGreen808 December 22, 2011 10:29 am

    ST–

Which coach(s) will be representing the UH players on pro day?

  109. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 10:31 am

If Chow is going to define and put a final touch on his career here in Hawaii, he’ll probably get a DC that has already worked with him and proven himself to start with. That could mean that Miano, at best, would need to accept a job as a position coach or player personnel. The good news is that Chow believes in promoting from within the ranks. Something that BYU didn’t do when LaVelle Edwards left, which apparently has served as a bitter memory to Chow. OC, is a different story as the offense is his expertise. Rolo might just fit in well there.

  110. Nalani December 22, 2011 10:39 am

#108 I think its the coach who helps his team win a lot of games and go to higher profile bowl games!

  111. BleedGreen808 December 22, 2011 10:42 am

    #110

    Thanks

I hope they keep Inoke as a GA. He might be the next Niumatalolo (sp).

  112. Nalani December 22, 2011 10:45 am

From everyone I know who knows him, Inoke is a quality person. You can never get too many quality people on your staff.

  113. Bowwar December 22, 2011 10:47 am

Let Chow bring in “his” people…The former staff had their opportunity, so its time for “new” blood. I think Chow should bring in his own OC and DC who fit his philosophy. Of the existing staff, Tuioti is a keeper, Cal is steady and usable as a LB Coach, and Miano as a recruiting coordinator. I don’t see much more being kept beyond that. Rolo is a good “up and coming” coach, but he’s definitely not in the mode of Chow’s offensive philosophy. I wish all of the former coaches the BEST in their future endeavors.

  114. Bowwar December 22, 2011 10:48 am

I agree in keeping Inoke as a GA…

#94 – When I was up at the football office, the Governor dropped by. I think he is hampered by the economy (which looks like it is coming back up) when it was down. I don’t know if our former governor ever visited the athletic department offices.

Whether he can do anything for the AD or not is something else. He certainly wasn’t up there soliciting votes (too early) so I must guess that he is interested in UH athletics. Of course in fairness to him, it is the legislature that votes on and doles out the $$$. The executive branch only administers.

  122. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 11:18 am

USC is signing recruits early in order to sidestep NCAA recruiting sanctions.

  123. el burro sabio December 22, 2011 11:22 am

I would prefer Inoke finish his master’s degree and find a full-time coaching position somewhere, anywhere. It’s tough for anyone to go to school, coach, and work nights (nothing against Bulla, of course) to support his family.

  124. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 11:37 am

Boy what a tandem Rocky Seto and Norm Chow would make in Hawaii. Proven winners, both of them.

  125. 808Bowler December 22, 2011 11:40 am

Morning everyone. Getting me some mama woo for lunch. Best hamburger steak!!!!!

  126. BigWave96744 December 22, 2011 11:43 am

Haruki Rocky Seto could have well been the first Japanese-American DI coordinator when he was at SC. Having him on staff could help us crack the Japan Media Market

  127. A-House December 22, 2011 11:48 am

U guys seriously think that an Ute assistant would follow Chow to Hawaii? this create bad feelings.

If so many coaches around the country called him, as Chow reports, there should be plenty to choose from – for sure keep Tony Tuioti!!

  128. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 11:56 am

    A-House,

Rocky Seto isn’t a Ute assistant… maybe you mean Sitake?

Seto was not retained when Lane Kiffin became the Head Football Coach at Southern Cal. He was replaced by Kiffin’s father, Monte.

Seto has participated in an exchange program with Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan to help teach American football coaching and playing strategy.[1]

In 2010, Seto joined Pete Carroll’s coaching staff for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

  129. Buffoman December 22, 2011 12:04 pm

I think thst Coach Chow could represent UH’s interest at Pro Day quite nicely. With his credentials, I’m sure the folks grading the athletes would be confident that his word is solid.

  130. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 12:06 pm

I’ve said it before that Rocky Seto would make an excellent DC/secondary coach for UH. Very lots of positive energy, enthusiastic, a good teacher, had a good rapport with his players at USC. I guess the question would be is he ready to break out on his own and away from Uncle Pete at Seattle. He nearly had the UCLA DC job, but that turned out to be an omen.

Let Coach Chow put together his own coaching staff. I remember when Fred von Appen was fired, Hugh Yoshida “urged” June Jones to retain Tom Williams, but it didn’t happen as Jones brought in all new coaches.

  131. A-House December 22, 2011 12:06 pm

    MIH:

no – I was not referring to Seto, but any current Ute assistant.

watched the u-tube on Seto and he sure has a lot of energy.

  132. A-House December 22, 2011 12:09 pm

    Old School Dave:

u wen grad before Judge Mui from UH?

jus asking as you mentioned “long time ago”.

eye afta tom, but before Viet Nam – already in the Army ( Ft Ord and Devens )

  133. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 12:11 pm

I think all will agree that the talent level will need to be upgraded. That falls on upgrading recruiting and the type of players they go after. I’m sure Coach Chow understands this and the challenges UH faces.

  134. Kevin December 22, 2011 12:11 pm

$550,000.00/year over five years isn’t a lot by today’s standards. ST said that this time UH is looking to get the most out of what they put in..

SO…. As long as Coach Chow does screw around with the team name or the colors they wear, then give him free range on what he needs to do to win.

BTW, one of the good things Greg McMackin did was to RETURN the name of our program to the front of the uniform where it belongs. We are “HAWAII”. Dumping silver was a no-brainer though.

  135. Couch potato December 22, 2011 12:14 pm

tommui, do you know of any budget request by the executive branch for uh athletics? maybe that capitalist person knows.

  136. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 12:14 pm

Rocky Seto is not and never has been a coach at Utah.

He is with the Seahawks with a job in my best estimate that pays below $150,000.

  137. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 12:16 pm

A-House: Not that old. I was on the 10-year plan. Started there in the mid 70s, when goof off a little, academic suspension, worked for a number of years before finally returning and managing to grad in the mid 80s. Favorite professor during my time was Abraham Piianaia – Geography.

  138. Committee Member #7 December 22, 2011 12:19 pm

Why keep bringing up Miano? Yes he is a hard worker and bleeds green but the reality is our defensive secondary has sucked for the last ten years…all under Miano.

  139. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 12:19 pm

I read that Rocky Seto was earning something like $45K to $50K which is what Quality Control guys earn in the NFL. He was earning something like $500K as USC DC. As an assistant defensive secondary coach he must have earned a salary increase. I think a full-time NFL assistant earns about $150K to $170K. Could be wrong, though.

  140. Kevin December 22, 2011 12:22 pm

BTW I had said a few days ago that I’d prefer to have Norm Chow or ANY new coach here for 900,000.00 a year over THREE years than a smaller salary over five for their first deal.

Someone said it was par for the course, but again, other new coaches on their first deals with UH, at least under Donovan, all have had three year deals. Charlie Wade, Dana Takahara-Dias, Gib Arnold, etc. (I think Coach “Bud” Nakamine is a three year deal too).

I think Coach Trap’s extension was for three.

Currently I only know coaches Shoji and Coolen are on 5-year deals and in the midst of it.

So, apparently only FOOTBALL gets a mandatory five year deal for a new HC? That can’t be a state of Hawaii reg… can it?

  141. 808Bowler December 22, 2011 12:27 pm

St any word if the 2 recruits sent their letters in?

Going be intresting to see norm put his staff together.

  142. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 12:28 pm

    old school,

Yea sounds about right. That’s why I figure he makes $150k or below.

Money is probably better here as DC, the hard part would be breaking him away from Pete I think.

  143. A-House December 22, 2011 12:28 pm

    Old School Dave:

Interesting you should mention a favorite prof – I was so lousy, I never had a favorite prof.

I remember taking Religion from Aoki and got him mad when I said the biblical quotes attributed to Jesus was written by man during the so-called “romantic period” in Europe – man got many dirty looks – yet, some say that the Bible is a historical document of the Isralites.

OK, ST, no more talk about politics and religion – was just remembering my class with Aoki.

Perhaps my most interesting class was British Lit when I questioned the professor’s interpretation and got him mad – so on the first exam I put in my own thoughts for which I got an “F” – so I played the political game and answered future exams like he interpreted – “aced” the final, but he called me in and said I would bet a “B” because of the first exam – his way or the highway mentality; pissed me off, but what could I say if I wanted my degree.

  144. A-House December 22, 2011 12:34 pm

What time is the announcement scheduled for?

  151. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 12:53 pm

    Kevin,

I think simply because of the number of scholarships and players on the team a football coach needs that many years to build and shape the program into what he wants it to be. Four years minimum to really see your return of investment… Three years to see what direction it is going… two years for the players to really buy into the system… 1 year, chaos.

  152. Couch potato December 22, 2011 12:54 pm

  158. tommui December 22, 2011 1:15 pm

A-House your #144 reminded me of Dr. Mahler (sp?) in European History. I skipped mostly all of his lectures. Got at least a B in all of the quarter exams.

Got an A in the finals. He gave me a D+ saying that I missed most of his lectures. I argued that I should get at least a B+ as I pretty well max’ed his exams despite the fact I missed most of his lectures. Ended with a B-.

The Prof could put me to sleep almost as fast as the prof I had in Philosophy 100!

I must admit that the time I spent in Hem. Hall playing Canasta has proven a waste of time … wonder how the game was played – forgot already!

One of Mac down fall was keeping all the staff but maybe that was the stipulation.

  163. mikey December 22, 2011 1:18 pm

Here’s Utes concern and accolades on their blog:

Where I’m really worried is on the recruiting front. As you said, both Hansen and Wilson wanted to work with Chow, and Ceachir also stated Chow was a big reason he was coming to Utah. Those are just the three off the top of my head, others may exist too. If we can’t get a good quarterback prospect in the system now, I’m really worried about the position in the future.

Chow’s season was nothing short of amazing this year. His game plans, to get Utah to 6 wins after Wynn went down, when everyone in the stadium (Fans, Coaches, Players, Broadcasters, Press, etc) knew what the gameplan was, is arguably one of his best playcalling season ever.

  164. Couch potato December 22, 2011 1:19 pm

    tom:

    t’was a decade later.

funny thing that just crossed my mind – in my teens, I worked construction each summer with 3 men who were part of the 100th Bn and a decade removed from WWII – never talked about “war”, but they had horror stories of how they were treated by Red Cross workers who ripped open their “packages” in front of them, removed all the cookies, etc. and threw a nearly empty box to them and laughing all the way – mail call was different back then!

  168. rico December 22, 2011 1:24 pm

    keep Rolo !

  169. A-House December 22, 2011 1:28 pm

    tom:

hope you did not have Charles Moore as your Phil 100 teacher – we were warned to never sit in the first 2 rows – never asked, but on the first day of class we found out – guy would “spit” while giving his lecture.

another interesting class was Bus Psych – new teacher who wanted to use “technology” on his exams – funny thing while taking the mid-terms, I happened to blink and I could see the “hidden dot” – went through the entire exam looking for questions were I knew the answers, blinked, dot appeared – thus “aced” his exams -now, “I know nothing” (Sgt Schultz).

  170. Kevin December 22, 2011 1:29 pm

    Ok that makes sense.

I really thought UH would have been leary about five years off the bat. Thought they might have done four at the most to start off.

    THAT’S HOW YOU DO IT!

When Colt had his announcement it interrupted live TV.

  183. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 1:50 pm

#173…Kevin…Got mine yesterday. The last day to get them. With the change in the law, they made the permit cut-off period 10 days prior to New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31). The cut-off used to be on December 31 itself. According to HFD, this was done so that people who were focused on the Christmas Holiday and accustomed to permits going on sale after Christmas would forget about it. Sort of “out of sight out of mind”. Then, when they remembered to get them, it would be too late….sneaky dem buggaz…..

Not many people knew about that until the past couple of days. According to the lady at the Satellite City Hall on Fort Street, there was a surge in sales yesterday as people were finding out that the deadline was yesterday. Heard about 8,000 permits were sold. Still less than the 10,000 sold last year…but the tradition still lives….!!!!

  184. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 1:51 pm

One good thing I found was that at least 3 people I know have told me they are going to start buying season tickets again for UH football after not doing so for several years. That’s a good sign….

  185. 808Bowler December 22, 2011 2:00 pm

Yup got my 5 permits yesterday. The hfd guy said they only opened the permit sales for a few days so they don’t have too much sales. But if not people prob try get them illegaly anyway.

  186. Kevin December 22, 2011 2:01 pm

Oh yeah, just got off the phone and UH will be pushing a DEPOSIT program for NEW season ticket holder real soon. Us renewals will wait like normal I guess.

  187. Kevin December 22, 2011 2:03 pm

    (J)J,

Oh yeah for sure NEW season ticket sales will JUMP.

Coach Mack’s debut season had the 2007 hype behind it and this hype is different.

    Just excellent news simply excellent!

  188. misterfudge December 22, 2011 2:03 pm

I wasn’t a Norm Chow guy but now that he’s on board will support him 100%. After all, it’s about the team and the program not necessarily the individual.

As for the grumbling students, never should have let them vote on removing the fees in the first place. BTW who was the genius that allowed them to bring it to a vote?

  189. Kevin December 22, 2011 2:05 pm

Ah… we don’t do firecrackers anymore. Busy workin the kegs in lower PC as they say, besides no one likes to do the messy clean up afterwards anyway. We just enjoy the show the neighborhood puts on. Besides more money for food and BEVERAGES. 😉

    Graduating student athletes a priority….

    Win Games!!! and Chase Championships!!!

  226. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 2:55 pm

Prepare young players for the NFL….but prepare them for life.

  227. LizKauai (bonafide) December 22, 2011 2:55 pm

mih- Rainbow Warriors when HE played…

Coach Chow addresses my “GRADUATION” concerns.

    Promises to WIN… okaaaay….

    GO WARRIORS!

  228. LizKauai (bonafide) December 22, 2011 2:56 pm

ST gets in the first question! (I think)

  229. AlaWai December 22, 2011 2:57 pm

Welcome to Coach Chow! I am impressed with his sincerity. Imua Rainbow Warriors!

  230. LizKauai (bonafide) December 22, 2011 2:58 pm

Hmmm… hard to hear… sounds like more run than shoot…

  231. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:00 pm

Umm did Coach Chow say “better get used to saying that again” after he said Rainbow Warriors?

  232. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:01 pm

ST asked about style of offense….Coach Chow said what we knew, he’s not a run and shoot guy, more pro style. However, some of the passing concepts of RnS is similar to drop back pro style offense. Caveat is that he needs to see the skills of the players he has now and adapt to their skill levels and the skill levels of the recruits.

  233. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:01 pm

Pro style offense. QB under center. Elements of the RnS in Pro Style. Balance between run and pass.

  234. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:01 pm

Coach Chow looking good and young again sporting that UH GREEN huh?

    😎

  235. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 3:01 pm

Hmm.. if we get Seto.. we’ll have the Chinese, the Japanese, the Polynesian (Norm and maybe Tuioti), who going be the Portagee?

  236. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:03 pm

I dunno what’s going on, but while I prefer Warriors, if we go back to Rainbow Warriors no shame in that.

People should go ask Al and Niko Noga about Rainbow Warriors if they feel so insecure.

  237. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 3:03 pm

    (J)J…

yep.. he said something like, “as a coach, our job is to magnify the talents of the players that we have and adapt the offense(defense) to what’s on hand.” … I like that.

  238. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:04 pm

Will talk to the current assistant coaches, but has some people in mind.

  239. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:04 pm

Will have good recruiters. Recruiting is the most important job on the team other than coordinators. Recruiting is the teams lifeline.

  240. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:04 pm

We had coaches come in and say UH was their “dream job”.

This time I got chicken skin watching and listening to Coach Chow.

  241. 808Fringe December 22, 2011 3:05 pm

This is the first time I heard Coach Chow speak and I’m impressed. I like strap ’em up with him now! WELCOME COACH!!!

  242. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:06 pm

Needs to study clock management. Only had to deal with it on one side of the ball. “Understand the entire game.”

  243. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:07 pm

Protect the ball on offense. Take it away on defense. Defense going to be aggressive. Lots of man to man. Offense better be able to pick up a blitz….

  244. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:08 pm

If we want to be the best we should play the best…why would you not do that.

  245. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:08 pm

Had to step away, but did he say HE has to study clock management?

    Aiyah!

  246. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:09 pm

Hints that 1st assistant/recruiter lands in Hawai`i and drive to Laie.

  247. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:10 pm

“Money has nothing to do with it. I have a chance to come home, I have a chance to represent this university, I have a chance to represent the people of Hawaii.”

    Heartfelt. Eloquent. Nuff said.

  261. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:15 pm

    Kevin…yeah, but somehow, I believe Coach Chow…. 🙂

and #246 I think his comment about clock management was because in the NFL and as an OC, you just look at clock management based on your side of the ball. So he understood/understands clock management tremendously from the offensive perspective. He just has to get used to clock management on both sides of the ball.

  262. BleedGreen808 December 22, 2011 3:16 pm

    JD–

You heard what Coach Chow said, he wants to play the best and not a cupcake schedule to be the best.

    Bring on the big boys.

  263. Old Diver December 22, 2011 3:17 pm

Don’t have to worry about clock management. The crowd will be yelling “Time Out” at the appropriate time. 🙂

  264. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 3:17 pm

Promises to win games and chase championships.

I salute that statement big time.

Glad I didn’t hear a promise of going back to the Sugar Bowl.

  265. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 3:18 pm

A reporter said Ohio State have said they want to come here

to play us, presumeably for their “bowl” game to reward their

players at the end of the season. Is that possible?

  266. bigislandkurt December 22, 2011 3:19 pm

The whole “rainbow warrior” utterance is purely one that shows UH has never been much of a thought in Chow’s mind….until now. Everybody on the continent…including many TV announcers still use the Rainbow when describing Hawaii. Like Chow said, he’ll leave it to the other folks to “worry about stuff like that.” His job is to graduate players, win games, and chase championships. Loved the presser.

    BIK

  267. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:19 pm

Good time for Ohio St. to schedule UH. No Bowl in 2012 means Hawai`i is their Bowl.

    Urban vs. Norm I. Cheeehooooo!

  268. Old Diver December 22, 2011 3:19 pm

    #266

Aren’t we looking for another game next year?

  269. Da Punchbowl Kid December 22, 2011 3:20 pm

I LIKE this guy. A coach who can connect with and inspire fans like this must be awesome with players. These are no longer interesting times. These are EXCITING times. I liked his attitude about USC and Ohio State. Bring ’em on! You get the feeling he isn’t afraid of anything. Nice!

  270. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 3:20 pm

    #259

    Old Diver,

I bit into a chili pepper. You too I see.

  271. bigislandkurt December 22, 2011 3:21 pm

Win-win. If we win at least 7 games, we get the Hawaii Bowl. If we win the conference championship, we go to the Las Vegas Bowl. Cannot go wrong with that. Considering the merger of conference USA and the MWC, even a BCS bowl is not beyond the realm of possibilities.

JD and company made an excellent hire. A new breath of life for the program.

    BIK

  272. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 3:21 pm

ASU three penalties in successive plays…

    going backwards…

  273. koakane December 22, 2011 3:22 pm

he spoke well, has plans, expressed excitement but adds it has to be tempered. lets see how this works out and how the UH will benefit

  275. Da Punchbowl Kid December 22, 2011 3:22 pm

Okay, gotta get out for my afternoon walk. Coach has me all fired up. Thanks Coach!

  276. maui96797 December 22, 2011 3:24 pm

last time i watched a streaming live event was when colt made his announcement. to me, this one gave me more chicken skin.

  277. Buffoman December 22, 2011 3:24 pm

This man is ours. He represents us so well. His team will be prepared or the young men will not be on the team. He let everyone know at that press conference that he is humbled by the selection and his mission, but make no mistake, he also let everyone know who will be in charge on the field.

Welcome home, coach, we’re all looking forward to watching you develop a new Rainbow Warrior team.

  278. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:25 pm

Current assistant coaches take note: Developed his skills and built his resume for 35 years on the mainland. His homecoming brings a lot to the table. Sincerity in his voice and body language screamed of passion for Hawai`i, his home. All is pono!

  279. 99club December 22, 2011 3:26 pm

My lasting impression from the press conference: I can’t see any player leaving for the mainland if they are offered a scholarship from Coach Chow. This is going to be an amazing ride.

  280. tommui December 22, 2011 3:27 pm

I like Coach Mac – grandfatherly (though he is 13 years younger than I). Kind gentleman. Fine individual. Unfortunately he was not inspiring and tended to be tongue-tied.

I listened to Coach Chow in the press conference (thank you KITV!). He is articulate, spirited, inspiring.

Thank you JD and Committee! Great choice!

  281. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:27 pm

Who was the PAC12 – Hawai`i player that was never recruited by UH?

  282. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:28 pm

About the unis…maybe compromise can be reached and we can have, as others have suggested before, throwback unis with the rainbow logo on them….

Although I like just WARRIORS and the black/dark green unis.

  283. 99club December 22, 2011 3:30 pm

Still get my Rainbow Warrior baseball cap. I knew it’d come back in style some day. Like those old Damien ties….

  284. Chee Hoo December 22, 2011 3:32 pm

    #282

Chow mentioned “two stops ago” which would be UCLA. Dalton Hilliard out of Punahou. Hasiak was also there but he was recruited by UH.

  285. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:33 pm

    99club…You went to Damien???

  286. Chee Hoo December 22, 2011 3:34 pm

99club, bus out the Green/Orange/White Rainbow baseball jacket! Just like the one Murakami used to always wear.

  287. (Jesse) James December 22, 2011 3:34 pm

He also mentioned how Kurt Gouveia was never recruited by Hawaii either.

Neither was Pilares…who went to the AFA but returned home after not liking it prior to his freshman year.

  288. AlaWai December 22, 2011 3:35 pm

I get the feeling that HC has been so dedicated to his craft that every thing else not related to his job was left to the “higher-ups.” I like that. His focus will be on the field with his players. UH should consider a non-football staffer to handle the branding and merchandise imaging. Maybe we’ve been thinking too much about this stuff than what’s on the field.

  289. FattyMcButterpants December 22, 2011 3:37 pm

288 Not recruiting Ola is one of the biggest mess ups in UH football history. That guy had winnah written all over him in high school.

  290. Kevin December 22, 2011 3:37 pm

    Here is the EASIEST compromise.

UH will be getting the new green tops in 2012 reflecting the new tribal poly tattoo design from this season.

    We get white pants.

    PAU!

Put the black away for “special” games.

  291. Katoosh December 22, 2011 3:41 pm

What was all the negative comments about Coach Chow not being impressive during public speaking engagements or interviews! Dang…that was one inspiring press conference! When Chow speaks “everybody” will be listening. Strong, articulate, and disciplined tone of voice. Warrior returnees, as Eddie Murphy once said, “there’s a new sheriff in town!”

  292. 99club December 22, 2011 3:41 pm

#286 James- Just Freshman yr. Then Maryknoll.

  294. Katoosh December 22, 2011 3:45 pm

Chow Fun times at UH! Might be fun times for the fans but it’s going to a grind for the players! This guy means business! Like how Coach chow addressed each media reporter at the press conference, “SIR!” It’s called respect. Chow will bring back “RESPECT” to the UH football program!

  295. Hiflyer December 22, 2011 3:51 pm

I did so appreciate his candid responses, especially that one regarding time management as a whole. The guy is “what you see is what you get”. He is not going to tell you something that is not a part of his make up. I get the sense if he does not know he’ll say so and will go out and figure it out…no excuses. He just stated in that line he is accountable.

    Expect time management to improve.

  301. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 3:58 pm

Hmm… I wonder if we can get some of those local boys who verbalized elsewhere to re-consider?

  302. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 3:58 pm

Thing about time management… how much of that can you do on Defense, anyway?

  303. Sallie Scruggs December 22, 2011 4:02 pm

mih – the last two minutes of the game.

  306. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 4:06 pm

You ice the kicker (strategy) … call time out if you can’t get your defense aligned properly (reactive) … other than that, I think you try to stop the other guy in three or steal the ball away. Time management in Defense if primarily to get off the field as quickly as possible, no?

  307. Buffoman December 22, 2011 4:16 pm

    #305 and 307 and me

That’s why we are fans in the stands and he is coach. He spoke it, he knows something about it and we speculate and guess, and enjoy being a part of the team that way.

All I know is that I have all the confidence in coach.

Just think about our QBs. They all know that they have to be able to show what they can do with 3,5,7 step drops from under center. I’m loving the change ups he is proposing.

People get ready, it will be different.

  308. Don Weir (We-ah) December 22, 2011 4:19 pm

    A-House,

I had Aoki too. A GA ran the seminars and read the papers. Once was told no paper was turned in and I had the original draft in my bag.

How about Gavan Daws down at Varsity Theater??

    Amos Lieb for Am Lit?

  309. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 4:19 pm

white pants ok only if you add the “rainbow” stripe down the

side again. Otherwise it looks like long underwear even with

so-called tribal patterns. But dang I liked those black pants

with sharks teeth on one leg…

  310. RedZone December 22, 2011 4:25 pm

First coach he hires will be headed for Kahuku. About time. I think he gets it. I will be standing in the Chow line for sure.

  311. Buffoman December 22, 2011 4:27 pm

#309 Stroup for Ocean 101? All the sorority women took that one.

  312. PolyMom December 22, 2011 4:28 pm

Okay I hope you all enjoyed the real Norm Chow. Our boys better be ready to bring it on! No more cup cake practices. No more playing video games late at night. Everything will be un plugged. I know. That is how the BIG BOYS roll.

If you did not catch him saying…he wants the East Coast to see Hawaii…get ready folks for day games. You can all man up and show up. The heat here is nothing like the Rose Bowl. Heck we went to a game two years ago, it was 111 degrees in the stands. I highly recommend the Under Armour heat resistant clothing.

With his permission my husband will be putting up on my website when we get back to LA his Talk Story lecture he did for the Punahou SoCal Alumni.

If you plan on going to the USC game let Don Weir know. Negotiated today a venue for a Hawaii party.

Now can I get a BIG and LOUD…Hawaii beat USC! 253 days until game time. My boy is so excited Barkley is coming back. Now he can lick um! I have dreamed for that day for him to hit Barkley. All my Hanukkah wishes are coming true. Now PRAY for Rocky Seto!

white pants with a rainbow stripe down the side looks like underwear with a rainbow stripe down the side.

rather have the tribal pattern that matches the jersey.

  314. PolyMom December 22, 2011 4:29 pm

BTW the kid he was talking about was Dalton Hilliard. He rid not get recruited by Hawaii. Go figure?

  315. RedZone December 22, 2011 4:29 pm

Chow will attack on defense. He wants to win the ball control and the turnover battle. I will enjoy seeing qbs under center again. He will “KISS” the offense.

  316. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 4:30 pm

    polymom,

    what is your website url?

  317. RedZone December 22, 2011 4:30 pm

I was surprised UH did not go after Hilliard.

  318. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 4:34 pm

I just got home, was listening to the whole thing on radio. I just got to see a picture of interview.

Our head coach with a TUCKED in green shirt….HALLELUJAH!

  319. cheepono December 22, 2011 4:36 pm

simione vehikite was another one i thought UH should’ve gone hard after and was absolutely shocked when he got really late offers from ohio state, usc, and wash.

  320. bb December 22, 2011 4:37 pm

Bobby Curran’s job just got a whole lot easier.

  321. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 4:46 pm

Damn! That was an emotional and inspiring speech Norm Chow gave. Let’s get to work!!

BTW, I also found Coach Chow much easier to listen to than previous UH coaches in terms of public speaking.

  322. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 4:46 pm

Interview with Norm Chow by Derek Inouchi I am assuming.

There is something so refreshing, raw, HONEST about him. He has so many chances to hype his hire up in areas such as winning, in things like claiming this was his “dream job” like so many snake oil salesmen have done i.e. Graham, but he doesn’t.

“Work hard and whatever happens, happens…”

  324. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 4:48 pm

I think when players at Punahou and Kahuku hear, “Coach Chow is on campus”, they’ll be excited too.

  325. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 4:52 pm

    Mike Holmgren

    President, Cleveland Browns

“I’m so excited about this. It’s a great thing for the University. I think it’s the most natural thing in the world. Norm and I first met and worked together at BYU. I learned so much about football from him and that was my first major job at the college level. We established not only a professional relationship, but a friendship at that time back in 1982. Since that time, we’ve kept in contact over the years. We’ve encouraged one another and watched our families grow up. The beautiful thing about this, is that he’s going home. He’s kind of come full circle and I think it’s a wonderful thing for the University, for Norm, and his family. There’s no question that he’ll be successful. He is as creative a football coach that I’ve ever worked with or know. His execution on offense—wherever he’s gone—it’s clear that he puts his imprint on the offense. He’s had Heisman Trophy winners at USC and BYU, Rivers at NC State, and all the great players that he had at BYU, so I think he’s the perfect hire.”

  326. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 4:54 pm

    Lane Kiffin

    USC Head Football Coach

“We’re very excited for Coach Chow. After an outstanding career as an assistant coach with many teams, it’s nice to see him fulfill his dream to be a head coach. That’s a great hire by Hawai‘i and should lead to many years of success for the Warrior football program. We look forward to facing Coach Chow and his team when Hawai‘i comes to the Coliseum this fall.”

Don’t think he means it…:-P jk jk

  328. bigislandkurt December 22, 2011 5:10 pm

Dalton Hilliard: Wasn’t he NOT recruited because he made it clear that he was leaving the islands regardless? It kinda bugs me when I hear about UH Not recruiting a certain player, when there is more the story than people know.

    BIK

  329. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 5:11 pm

I wonder if the new staff will be wearing polo shirts from now on instead of those button down shirts.

  330. Old School Dave December 22, 2011 5:13 pm

I hope that the returning UH players take Coach Chow’s words. They had better start working out now, instead of pigging out over the holidays. I think the new coaching staff will have to address, among many things, improving the team’s overall speed, size, stamina, and strength. Some of the linemen looked a little too heavy which in turn affected their mobility and blocking/tackling. Other positions saw UH players getting outmuscled or physically overmatched. I wonder if Chow will be bringing in his own S & C coach? Possibly someone from USC?

  331. Buffoman December 22, 2011 5:16 pm

#327 And we wondered about who would be suited to represent us at Pro Day? Wow, that was great to see and I’m sure coach Carroll would be interested in what UH had to offer up.

I think it will be a very different message received when someone like Coach Chow speaks to a family and young person about playing for the home team. He’s being on the other end of the recruiting trail gives a different perspective. And he is one of us, a keiki o ka aina so to speak. It’s different from even a coach Jones’ return as although he loves Hawaii his roots are not as deep, so to speak.

This feels very different from what we’ve had before, and it’s been good in the past.

I also gathered from his press conference that if there is going to be any hold over, it may be just Tuioti and Lee. I don’t think the others will stick, and I’m good with that. I’d also be okay if I’m very wrong on the matter as I truly trust his leadership.

  332. Aaron December 22, 2011 5:18 pm

    RE: Time Management on Defense

couple years back when we played Cincinnati in the last game of the season, we were behind with less than 3 minutes left and Cinci had the ball on first down. They run the ball for an 8 yard gain and the fans are SCREAMING for UH to call a timeout… But Mack does the right thing and does not call a timeout. They pick up the first down, and the clock stops to move the chains and we still have all our timeouts left. on the ensuing first down, we hold them to a short gain and call a timeout. We still have 2 timeouts left, which keeps Cinci from being able to run the clock out and forces them to still try for a first down.

Mack got ripped on the message boards for not calling the timeout on 2nd and 2, but it was the right thing to do from a defensive “clock management” point of view. That’s clock management from a defensive-minded coach. Now as far as offensive clock management…

  333. Nalani December 22, 2011 5:21 pm

#326 I have never seen a head coach on Kamehameha’s campus, or probably the others too. If Chow came to any school campus it would be a major change. A change for the better if they want the top recruits to stay home.

  334. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 5:28 pm

    Aaron..

Thank you.. very astute observation and explanation.

  335. Kevin December 22, 2011 5:35 pm

UH coaches wore polos on the sidelines once.

Green ones with white trim. Was for the 2009 home game vs Fresno. When the team debuted their first set of green tops.

Those buttoned down shirts are really comfortable. ONLY UH’s coaching staff has them compared to other UA schools.

  336. Gabriela Blakesley December 22, 2011 5:38 pm

Inspiring speech from Coach Chow. His public speaking skills were excellent and I really like his speaking style! The emotional moments gave me chicken skin, the motivational moments got my heart rate up, and his humor was point on. Imagine your dad trying to find you a wife at a news conference!

  341. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 6:04 pm

ASU didn’t belong on the same field as BSU… what a shame that BSU wasn’t matched up with a better team.

  342. christmas games December 22, 2011 6:08 pm

He was limping around a bit and also on his videos.

Got to tell him not to eat lobstah…

  346. LizKauai (macbook) December 22, 2011 6:25 pm

    Awesome Colts/Texans game!

  347. KeleguenBinadu December 22, 2011 6:28 pm

I kinda kringed when the Coach said, “…Rainbow Warriors.” Don’t get me wrong, but like many other football fans (mostly us younger generation), I think the brand identity (Warriors) we have is the one we should keep. I personally like the aggressive color scheme, the aggressive name, the haka, and the aggressive play (when it worked!) Heck, we have the best looking athletic logo in the nation; it was brilliantly designed. And how many teams used all black uniforms before Hawaii during the JJ era, now it seems like every team has an all-black uniform. But I do think that one or two games with the throwback uniforms against a BYU team or Wyoming (Paniolo Cup), or some special occasion would be excellent.

One question. President Hinshaw mentioned always wanting a mascot. I thought Vili the Warrior was our mascot?

  348. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 6:31 pm

Thanks MIH for Q&A with UH and Coach Chow.

But did you or anyone catch what our dear leader

Stephen asked him at the press conference?????

  349. TYaiea December 22, 2011 6:31 pm

Nope, Vili is not a mascot. He is a paid entertainer.

  350. cocobean December 22, 2011 6:34 pm

You can take the man out of Hawaii but you can’t Hawaii out of the man. Anyone who was born and raised here could feel the emotions running through Chow’s body. After 40 years on the road he’s home.

Without saying anything specific you know he understands the Hawaiian psyche. He knows whats pono and what’s not. He’ll get most of the people pulling in the direction he chooses.

  351. newbie December 22, 2011 6:36 pm

ok, so what do we know about these two new hires. Im not so impressed with the first two hires being grad assistants. Thought we’d start out impressing people. Two guys with no apparent connection to Hawaii.

Philip Rauscher from UCLA and Lewis Powell from Utah. Wow, big names. Im so not impressed.

And can we please get rid of our paid entertainer.

  352. Ralph December 22, 2011 6:37 pm

Vili is a hired entertainer for our FB program, UH can not use his pictures, or depiction of him, or name without his permission and without paying him. He once sued ESPN for using his picture in their ad for a UH game.

A reason we need to disassociate UH from Vili and bring on a true mascot for UH sports.

  353. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 6:40 pm

Loved it when we had that muscle-padded Hawaiian young man

running around like Super Man but understood local Hawaiians

did not. Hope they don’t go back to bobble head…

  354. TYaiea December 22, 2011 6:41 pm

Right on Ralph. Maybe Coach Chow can get rid of him. We need a student mascot and somebody with ideas can come up with a meaningful costume.

  355. newbie December 22, 2011 6:42 pm

  356. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 6:43 pm

Maybe we need some action figure like that robo-cop…

you know, a warrior image but high tech.

  357. Ipu Man December 22, 2011 6:48 pm

  362. Slugger December 22, 2011 6:54 pm

I would really like to get rid of Vili. He doesn’t know when to get the fans to make noise…when we have the ball??? WTH! He’s strolling off the field when the play is supposed to start. He’s in horrible shape to represent a Warrior. I suggested it before…we need a young, fit UH student to be a Warrior, if we want someone to represent The Warriors. Give the money to a student, not an entertainer. Have the band play the drums. We don’t need the separate drummers on the field. Our drum corps is great.

    Nuff said!

I agree that it would be more appropriate that a fit UH student should be the warrior.

  366. WarriorNY December 22, 2011 7:06 pm

I’ll be honest; I was not rooting for Norm Chow to be the next HC but after watching parts of today’s press conference and the love and respect he has for Hawaii, he completely got my respect and excitement. Good Luck to Mr. Norm Chow… Coming from another who calls Hawaii home but lives on the mainland. I relate so much to Coach Chow and I hope him the very best of luck while here…. Go Warriors!

PS – Thank you to Coach Mack for all you did for our players, coaches and fans… I don’t know the last time 3 UH skill players were drafted to the NFL. I haven’t lived in Hawaii in 10 years but I feel proud when I see someone come from Hawaii and have success… Coach Mack, you are a Class Act…

Hawaii has a new beginning. I hope everyone will support our team. Hey, if i can stay up to 4 AM watching UH games, I’m sure everyone can watch and support the team at home….

    Go Warriors

  367. Bulla December 22, 2011 7:11 pm

    WarriorNY,

it’s a new day in hawaii nei …. a lot of excitement, a lot of emotion, but there’s just something about a coach with some swag, looking sharp and getting down to business…. win games and chase championships….like that, pretty basic and simple… my kind of thought process, keep it simple sweetie….

    GO WARRIORS

    369,

You are so right about Coach Mac. A quality individual. We owe him our thanks. I think Greg, Kealoha, Rodney, Alex, and Mana represent the most ever skill players drafted into the NFL. These young meb not only made their teams, they are contributing in a big way. I’m excited for the future, Coach Chow IS the big-time Coach we were hoping for.

  374. bigislandkurt December 22, 2011 8:03 pm

Vili is/was a big Miano guy. But he’s also a cheerleader/crowd pleaser. So I would not be surprised if he is now all over Chow’s saddle bags. Cheee hooo pay beee. It’s Chow time!’

I think they have the posting for assistant coaches online with the NCAA College job opportunities site every year. I posted a link a week ago.

  382. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 8:57 pm

Oh.. but the links you offered are more job specific… I see.

  383. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 9:00 pm

Did JJ start his career here at UH against USC in 1999?

  384. markazulu December 22, 2011 9:03 pm

Chow said he has not begun assembling a staff of assistants but promised to “talk to the fellas that are here” as well as other candidates that he already has in mind.

He promised to stress recruiting of local players, although he joked that that part of the job initially may be difficult because he has spent much of his career telling Hawaii high school athletes “to leave home” and play on the Mainland.

Chow predicted changes to the UH “run and shoot” offensive scheme run by McMackin and June Jones, now head coach at Southern Methodist University.

“I’m not a run-and-shoot guy,” he said, favoring “more of a pro-style drop-back pass game.”

Changes to the offense will depend on the abilities of players already on the team, he said.

His teams, he said, “will take care of the football “ on offense and play “very aggressive defense with a lot of man-to-man” coverage.

  385. Will-I-Am December 22, 2011 9:13 pm

madeinhawaii, I was thinking the same thing.

JJ’s first game was a home game against USC. final score 62-7. Then he won 4 in a row.

  386. TYaiea December 22, 2011 9:14 pm

MIH, yep. Googled UH 1999 schedule. June Jones first year. First game: Sept 4, 1999 #21 USC 61 UH 7

    In high school that is

  389. markazulu December 22, 2011 9:18 pm

Whatever works best go Chow it’ll take time to get use to the qb under the center but whatever works im more a fan of the spread offense’s but as i said whatever works i just hope with all the statistic we succeess over the past years we just havent put the points up an we haven’t been to good in the red zone. i hope we dont decline but as long as we win then it’ll be good! i think IF he keeps ROLO they should make a offense that includes the style’s of a west coast an run n shoot concept but i really think the pistol is great i personally think HE’D have more success with OUR QB’S than he did at UCLA! anyways go CHOW GO WARRIORS

    I welcome the change!!

Posting again from SmartFootball the article about installing the WCO below the NFL-level

    http://smartfootball.com/gameplanning/can-the-west-coast-offense-work-anywhere-besides-the-nfl

Comments mentioned a couple of things said today:

Coach Chow talked about going back under Center which is very consistent with a basic WCO principle.

Routes are timed to match receiver steps and quarterback steps, with a healthy mix between 3-step and 5-step drops. It’s not about long bombs (though it has these too), but instead about efficiency.

He also says the offense will protect the ball; another WCO tenet.

Walsh’s quarterbacks became great by what they didn’t do: they didn’t throw incompletions (Walsh’s quarterbacks consistently completed over 60% of their passes, and occasionally closer to 70%), they didn’t throw interceptions (the interception rate per pass attempt went way down) ; and they didn’t take sacks, owing to Walsh’s meticulousness about their not holding on to the ball too long.

…and so on and so forth.

I think of Chow Fun it would be, to have a Winning first season in 2012, and then we play and beat JJ ‘s SMU’s Run and Shoot in our own Hawaii Bowl, on Saturday December 22, 2012, (not Christmas Eve, for Chrissake) which I think that would be a lot more fun, and definitely a lot cheaper, for Hawaii fans, than to win the mountain west conference outright, and have to go to Las Vegas. I just got back and am laying in bed at the California Hotel in Las Vegas, from the Maaco Las Vegas Bowl. The parking lot was Dirt, and it was SOOO COLD, my nose and toes were freezing, and I felt like leaving at half time. Hey maybe we could trade the Las Vegas Maaco’s Bowl’s 5th place PAC 12 team to come here and play us on Saturday December 21, 2013, at the Hawaii Bowl, and let one of the Conference USA’s winning team go to Las Vegas. It might be a shorter trip for PAC 12 team fans to come to Hawaii, and Hawaii fans would be more eager to go see Hawaii play a PAC 12 on the Saturday before Christmas, and Chow Wow can beat all those 5th place PAC 12 teams each and every Hawaii Bowl year. Then the PAC 12 invites us to join them, then we become champions of the PAC 12, and then repeat national champion contenders, and then play in the BCS championship Bowl in New Orleans, and then repeat National champions. And by the way, sometime during the process we get revenge and beat the Georgia Bulldogs Big Timr for what they did to Colt Brennan. By this time, with all the bonuses, Stormin Normin will be making 1.2 Mil per year, and we are number ONE in the country. I can dream, can’t I ? Goodnight.

  421. Curt December 22, 2011 10:32 pm

One of the things that caught my attention when Mack was hired was that he brought on a number of young coaches with minimal coaching experience. Subsequently, he promoted two of the young assistants as coordinators. JJ in contrast, seemed to hire assistants with tons of coaching experience like Mack, Glanville, Miano, etc. If Mack hired differently, would things have turned out differently?

I think there’s good reason to hire the “old futs.” Nah, they don’t have to be old…just experienced. That’s why I’m a little concerned again that Chow may be hiring a couple GAs as assistant coaches. Houston, do we have problem? What do you guys think?

  422. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 10:37 pm

Could someone provide me a link to where it says Coach Chow hired a couple of GA’s as assistants?

  423. postmanke December 22, 2011 10:40 pm

I liked that press conf. I like Rainbow Warriors, I like playing in afternoons. I also like that he’s not gonna get “out worked” …let’s go! thats the kind of change we need.. when can we buy season tickets?

  424. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 22, 2011 10:47 pm

Nevermind, I found the obscure reference to the hires.

    We shall see I guess.

Robert Anae, if he can be lured from Rich Rodriguez’s UA staff, would be a good choice as UH running game coordinator/offensive line coach.

    #285 Chee Hoo,

    #315 PolyMom,

    #330 BIK

    #384 A-House,

I’m pretty sure that Norm wasn’t talking about Dalton Hilliard (Punahou) but was instead referring to former All-State DT Seali’i Epenesa from Iolani….who was the only local Class of 2010 signee with UCLA.

I remember seeing Norm walking around on the Iolani sidelines before the 2009 D2 State Final Championship game to watch Seali’i play in the game against Kauai. According to my Iolani sources, UH never actively recruited Seali’i throughout 2009….and only ended up making a very late offer in mid-January 2010…after he pretty much had already decided to commit to UCLA.

Not a big fan of “Rainbow Warriors”. Maybe we should go back to being called the “Fighting Deans”.

I like Warriors. I wouldn’t mind seeing a throwback uniform when we play BYU or something but only for special occasions.

  431. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 10:55 pm

Both are hires as positional coaches…

  432. Curt December 22, 2011 10:57 pm

    iwwthm,

On the SportsHawaii.com web site, PIAA DS, made the following comment:

“This is what I’ve heard his two first hires are. I cant verify it but my sources are usually 99.99% right. Philip Rauscher – Grad Assistant from UCLA. He’ll most likely coach tight ends

and Utah grad assistant Lewis Powell to coach the defensive line.”

  433. madeinhawaii December 22, 2011 10:57 pm

    Will-I-Am….

I wouldn’t mind a dark green helmet with a 3-D effect that shows streams of different colors of the rainbow when viewed from different angles. It would be a tribute to the past…where we’ve come from and the legacy we carve as we go forward.

  434. Moocher December 22, 2011 11:03 pm

Didn’t JJ change the whole rainbow warriors thing to just the warriors as partly marketing and dare i say partly to get rid of the rainbow because rainbow colors are used for flags representing the gay community???

Be honest here-but that’s what I recall as for the change.

“…Over time the athletes began to hate being called the rainbows. As the symbol of the rainbow became more synonymous with the gay community, there became more of a push by the athletic department to change the uniform and nickname. After changing helmets for 1999, the Rainbow issue finally came to a head in 2000, soon after June Jones took over as head football coach.

At the time, athletic director Hugh Yoshida said, “That logo really put a stigma on our program at times in regards to its part of the gay community, their flags and so forth. Some of the student athletes had some feelings in regards to that.”

Feelings about the change were mixed. One former player said, “Being called the Rainbows, especially for men’s teams, left them open to ridicule. Warriors has a much stronger connotation.”

  435. Curt December 22, 2011 11:05 pm

    ST,

Maybe you can ask Coach Chow if he plans to hire assistants with minimal experience like Mack did. Nah, I’m just trying to stir the pot. But, I think it’s a legitimate question.

  436. 3-Prong December 22, 2011 11:10 pm

Do you call yourself a fan? If you do, put your $50 deposit down now. A season ticket in the north end zone is only $99. No more excuses that it costs too much to go to games.

  437. Will-I-Am December 22, 2011 11:15 pm

madeinhawaii, I have actually always been in favor of some sort of tribute from time to time. I hope Chow can work some magic in marketing and get us some nice uniforms.

Next year we get a camouflage uniform.

  438. Will-I-Am December 22, 2011 11:17 pm

I would love to see a flat black helmet.

Have you seen what Boise is doing with their uniforms. It seems like they always have something new. It keeps it fresh. I am sure the students would like the variety. instead of just mix matching the same outfit in 3 colors.

    December 22nd, 2011 at 12:14 pm

tommui, do you know of any budget request by the executive branch for uh athletics? maybe that capitalist person knows.

Sorry for not answering this earlier – just came back from the Diamond Head Basketball Tournament – during the break between the morning & evening games, we did some volunteer work at a local shelter. Thanks for the report on the press conference.

The University of Hawai`i has a semi-autonomous status in state government. It creates its own budgets, it does its own lobbying – the governor cannot restrict the Operating Budget funds although s/he can defer the issuance of bonds for capital projects.

However, the entire ten campus UH System must have a balanced budget so it does have to be aware of the costs to run it. Obviously, it cannot raise taxes on everyone in the state, but it can raise fees for the people who use the System – tuition, parking fees, season tickets – or cut back on services and faculty & staff to balance the budget.

With respect to this particular governor, he was an athlete in high school and college – wrestling and weight-lifting – and, as far as I know, worked out in a gym on a regular basis well into his late sixties. Maybe he still does.

If I had my way, all the men’s teams would be Rainbow Warriors – again learn more about Hawaiian culture and the role that rainbows played in the traditional lives of the people who lived here before we outsiders first arrived in 1778. And the women’s teams – I’d like to see the name Rainbow Wahine Warriors.

And football is a day game – I don’t ever remember going to a night-time PAC-10 game – I wen grad from UW and got a grad degree from UCLA.

I’ll bookmark your website website and consider the feeds alsoI am satisfied to search out various helpful facts right here from the submit, we have to have develop extra strategies during this regard, many thanks for sharing. . . . . .

  447. Moocher December 23, 2011 1:39 am

I only brought that up because some people say bring back the rainbow in rainbow warriors while others say leave it as the warriors. For me, I’m fine with either one-really. But the reality was the change was made for marketing and the “stigma” it offered or lent.

I don’t think it’s up to any one of us-it’s up to the school and the identity it wants and it’s not an easy one. I don’t think any of the Noga’s and other players had a hard time being a rainbow warrior. It really only came about with a broader marketing vision outside of hawaii and of some symbols in the gay community-most notably the rainbow flags and rainbow stickers to identify gay pride or gay establishments. And that was part of the issue and reason for change during Jones’ time. It was one of the first things he did. And love Jones or not, the guy did market UH very very well and take the program to a new level-a high level-the best in my lifetime and probably all of yours too?

And I also believe if i recall correctly, part of the reason the logo of the menehune with rainbow and fire by his feet helmets (Tomey era) were changed was because women did not feel that logo represented them as equals in the university so a neutral rainbow with the UH was adopted on the helmets.

With all of us being more educated maybe the rainbow warrior can be revisited-but do we want to confuse everyone again by being a rainbow warrior, then just a warrior, then back to rainbow warrior again? For that reason I would say keep it as is-keep it warriors. But a throwback uni would be awesomely insane 🙂

  448. Pomai December 23, 2011 4:24 am

Warriors, it’s never a good idea to take two steps forward then three step backwards. Also Doc the rainbow had nothing to do with Hawaiian culture, it was coined by a newspaper guy

  458. Da Punchbowl Kid December 23, 2011 7:34 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Truly a new day in Hawaii Nei for UH Football fans. What ever else the University teams are called, they should all be Warriors, at least in spirit. It *would* be nice to have have a unified nic name for our teams, but that’s just part of the many contradictions found in our efforts at branding and promotion of UH athletics, particularly in the way those things can be used to build our program.

Also UH should be getting a lot more of the revenue from UH Logo gear, stadium revenues and various other components of the athletic program, especially if we look at how those things are managed in other collegiate athletic programs. We may have binding relationships with vendors and businesses and entities tied to UH athletics which benefit those groups more so than UH, but over time, those things need to be redefined and reshaped to produce more revenues for UH. The branding and revenue control issues for UH athletics should be part of a major focus/effort if we expect to be a major player in collegiate athletics.

  459. koakane December 23, 2011 7:36 am

    good morning, small kind chilly

man exciting bball game by the warriors last night, supa effort this team put out

d1 don’t know if he was just using a metaphor, seriously doubt if UH will move games to the late morn or early sat. imho more peeps in seats will outweigh the east coast opinions.

  460. misterfudge December 23, 2011 7:38 am

I think Norm is actually referring to Sealii Epenesa. I think it was documented that UH didn’t recruit him until he had pretty much committed to UCLA because Chow had already visited him three times.

Also ran into Lawrence Lagafuina’s mom and she said he was torn between UW and UH. Went to UW because he already made the commitment and UH was late on him.

  461. d1shima December 23, 2011 7:40 am

    Not sure about that.

“Hawaiian Sun” can be more of an advantage than just a post-game refreshment.

Maybe this should be discussed over some kope. 😉

    I agree on the shirts.

You have the source for getting them done.

Good stuff. Tidbits: He was first Hawaiian/Samoan

All American High football player. He came from a family

of ten kids and did not want to go to Punahou but was

hoping to join his friends at Kamehameha…At Stanford

he studied Drama and of course he was in Hawaii 5-0 then

and now, too. Hilo Hattie hired him for $25 to $50 gigs

in California. In Hawaii, Al applied for a car salesman job

and was at first turned down…
