The Warriors had their first Turkey Bowl today, a scrimmage featuring redshirts and developing players.

Of note: Ikaika Woolsey can wing it. He threw scoring passes of 37 and 52 yards to wideout Duke Bukoski and a 7-yard TD pass to tight end Ethan Watanabe.

Nickelback Ryan Pasoquen served as defensive coordinator:

    Ohayoooooooooooooooogozaimasu!!!!!!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or, as the Nihonjins would say, ahem, “YAPPARRI DOOMO-GIBINGU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” a Grease supposes.

We save the most richest, beloved popular music lyrics for the great holidays, yes? Here we go:

    Hello, yeah

    It’s been awhile

    Not much, how ’bout

    Youuuuu?

I’m not sure why I called

I guess I really just wanted

    To talk to you.

I was thinking maybe later on,

    We could get together

    For a while?

It’s been such a lonnnng time

    And I really do

    miss

    your

    smile

I’m not talking ’bout movin’ in

And I don’t want to change your life

But there’s a warm wind blowing and

    The stars are out

And I really love to see you tonight.*

    – England Dan (AKA, “Dan Seals”) & John Ford Coley

The UH Warrior football Wounded Warrior uniforms will be washed prior to distribution to the, uh, lucky bid-winners, no? Or will the “u” in “UH” come from the “u” in “P.U.” in this case?

  15. Chicken Grease November 22, 2012 10:40 am

Here. Allow a Grease to do the THANKSGIVING EDITION of our favorite redundancies here.

    • Hey, that Coach Chow needs to be fired. He is washed and stubborn.

    • Don’t know about that Schroeder. He is from Duke. Which is not really a football school. And look at how they play football. What do we have to lose if we and/or Coach Chow makes a change? That Higgins kid looks ready. How about Cayman?

    • The University of Hawaii football players cannot play the pro set. The pro set is mostly for NFL players/teams/games.

    • Goodness! Is the o-line doing their job?

    • Don’t give me any “first time coaching.” Look at other collegiate football programs with first-time coaches this year. They are doing good!

  21. A-House November 22, 2012 10:55 am

Considering the source, ESPN, the biggest sports gorilla around, there must be some truth to the Bosie St, BYU, and San Diego St story of rejoining the MWC.

Guess there will be hell to pay by the 3 schools for leaving the Big East – exit fee must be something huge, I don’t see that any of them have the “kala” to bear the cost individually, and the MWC surely does not have any deep pockets to help them out. With the skimpy TV contract with other TV outlets, can’t see ESPN making any contribution to the exit fee.

Perhaps, it’s “bachi” for not seeing the writing on the wall the the other 5 powerful conferences would diss the Big East and place them in the same BCS grouping for a BCS bowl game thus 1) eliminating the “gift” for a school other that a BCS conference school to be awarded a bowl game and 2) allow another BCS school a 2nd or 3rd spot in a BCS bowl game – just control the $$$ babee!!!!!!!!!

  27. PurpleMaple November 22, 2012 11:08 am

If the offensive line is a bunch of “turkeys” (yuk, yuk), then Coach Chow should tell them to start looking to transfer to another school so he can start rebuilding the o-lline from scratch. Then no more grumbling from the fans. Good luck. And Happy ~Thanksgiving.

  28. jeezy33 November 22, 2012 11:08 am

ST, how fast is Woolsey? Just wondering if he can run some form of spread in future.

  29. PurpleMaple November 22, 2012 11:10 am

In fact all the guys recruited by McMackin and his staff, transfer. Tired of hearing about the “lack of talent” on the team (few exceptions).

  30. Derek November 22, 2012 11:11 am

Give thanks for the top Rainbows baseball recruits. Give thanks for Shoji’s top recruits. Give thanks for Arnold’s basketball recruits. Give thanks for Bob Cooleens great recruits.

Give thanks and pray for Chow’s current and future recruits, whoever they are.

Above all, give thanks for being healthy and for having health insurance if you are sick. Give thanks to our President, the San Francisco Giants, the San Francisco 49ers, the fans, the great country of ours, and thanks for our parents.

  37. WWF November 22, 2012 11:48 am

    ST,

Great story on the Ingrams. Nice to read about what is right with UH football that most take for granted, but we should be thankful for on Thanksgiving day. Also nice read about Alex Dunnachie.

  38. Stephen Tsai November 22, 2012 11:54 am

    Jeezy:

Ikaika said he was wondering why everyone thinks he’s a running quarterback. I was surprised at his arm strength.

He actually had a nice pass called back because the coaches (who served as referees) said he crossed the line of scrimmage.

    He didn’t.

The players then taunted the coaches about being “replacement refs.”

    Kind of funny, actually.

  39. Wes'side Warrior November 22, 2012 11:56 am

    Happy Thanksgiving, Gang!

Seeing that WW shoe, wondering why everyone else is not wearing them to break them in for game day.

  40. Stephen Tsai November 22, 2012 11:56 am

    Former UH:

The other side is funnier. They drew a mustache on Chow’s face.

It was all in good fun.

Afterward, the GAs had to do up-downs. One of them faked it.

  41. Stephen Tsai November 22, 2012 11:57 am

If anybody knows Mr. Bukoski, he’s got videos of the scrimmage.

    There’s hope for the future.

  42. Auto,Blog,Samurai,PRO,DOWNLOAD November 22, 2012 11:57 am

I do believe all of the concepts you’ve presented in your post. They are very convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too short for newbies. May just you please extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

  43. Former UH Athlete November 22, 2012 12:22 pm

    Here’s Ikaika’s HS junior year film… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RoVVEdy5X0&sns=em

*Looks pretty solid… Decent arm, very accurate. Good mobility in the pocket, shows nice touch on the deep throws.

*Needs to work on… get quicker on his drop back, improve footwork (everybody can improve their footwork), needs to add some muscle to withstand D1 hits.

Overall he looks good. This video was his junior year, so I’m sure he’s a little bigger/stronger by now. Like most recruiting videos, they only show all the good plays, so hard to see all his flaws.

Ikaika could probably start right now, but I think Chow is smart to redshirt him this year. No sense in getting him beat up and risk him losing confidence with this year’s OLine. Which brings me back to SS and Higgins… They basically are fodder until the real QBs get eligible. 2013 brings Graham, Woosley, and maybe Zwahlen if he doesn’t go on LDS mission. SS and Higgins will likely be fighting for #3 QB during spring and fall camps.

Also expect Chow to open up the playbook next year as everybody will know the playbook better in year 2 (I’m sure it’s massive). After this season, UH only loses 15 seniors and 2013 will have about 55 upperclassmen. Just that by itself help the team a lot because older, more experienced players should be more mature (physically and mentally).

I like this new WR commit Terrance Polk. This kid has speed and looks like a good route runner. Two attributes that are seriously lacking at UH this year. On his video, I see that defenses are respecting his speed by giving him a big cushion, but Polk still beats them deep on several plays.

  49. WarriorMojo November 22, 2012 12:53 pm

Speaking of Crusader alumni, I want to go on record — again — as saying Craig Stutzman needs to be on staff at UH. There have been only three coaches that I have seen at UH practices over the years who were able to coach BOTH technique/fundamentals while ALSO being able inspire guys and get them to play up. It’s not easy being a technician and a leader at the same time. Not saying there haven’t been more, but I know of three that I saw personally. And Craig Stutzman was absolutely one of them.

  50. WarriorMojo November 22, 2012 12:59 pm

Former UH, regarding your basketball post from late yesterday:

If this weren’t Thanksgiving I would point out that, while this is Gib’s third year, he has nine first time players and only two returning starters, so how does that make your argument? But since it is Thanksgiving, I won’t make that point.

  51. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2012 1:26 pm

I’ll ask Mr. Bukowski next time I see him about posting the scrimmage video. The future is what I am looking forward to. Glad there is some promise there.

  54. kapakahi November 22, 2012 1:55 pm

Thankful rhat….Mack’s 2010 team had a successful 10-3 regular season record…..with a Hawaii Bowl post-season bowl appearance…..to get UH the invite then in Dec. 2010 to join the MWC in football…..to allow UH to now be a member of a viable football conference…..even though not competitive this season…..and not be in same situation as Idaho and New Mexico State is in now…..WAC teams that will be left without any conference affiliation for next season (after the WAC goes defunct after this season)…..and now both considering going back to FCS status.

With Utah State and San Jose State football programs both on the upswing this season already with 9-win seasons and vying for the WAC Title, the MWC would unquestionably still take both of them….but speculating that if the decision were made now for next season…..that the MWC might consider taking Idaho over UH…..since Vandals are definitely a better geographical fit for the MWC than UH.

  73. Former UH Athlete November 22, 2012 6:54 pm

    al,

Woosley does look pretty good. Based on his HS film, he’s already better than SS and Higgins, and this film is over a year old (closer to 2 years). He’ll be pushing Graham for starting QB next year. Not sure if he’ll beat Graham, but I think UH will have two solid QBs next year with SS and Higgins behind them. UH already has a solid backfield (Gregory, Iosefa, Lister, Vele). The major areas needing to be addressed is Oline and WR.

The good news about 2012 is that the entire Oline returns next year with a full offseason under Chow’s staff and a full year of playing time. Hopefully Chow can find some upgrades at both tackles. The tackles have been not good this year, they’ve been beaten badly by good pass rushers consistently over the year. That’s the big concern for next season.

I think the interior of the line has been not bad, but inconsistent mainly because nobody had experience. Both guards and center have shown flashes of strong play… they are still learning the nuances of D1 football will get more consistent over time. They are going to be pretty good if they improve over the offseason.

  74. madeinhawaii November 22, 2012 6:55 pm

    fuh…this is true.

the majority of this team’s oline are soph/fresh who have been pitted against juniors/seniors. it does appear that chow and company have a handle on several jc oline dudes to lend depth and competition to those positions.

a lot of jc wr’s are also being considered.

what does that spell? read the subliminal.

AlaWai — thanks for sharing the Japanese-English “oldies”. Even Yuzo Kayama was my teen generation. Too bad I never met you at a rasu begasu (las vegas) karaoke call at Genji’s. He was a great enka singer and won many contests in Las Vegas in recent years,

Rasu Begasu’s Celebration of Life & Karaoke Call was held in January this year. Yes, his family insisted it be a Karaoke Call too as part of his rememberance. Was kinda subdued, but it was a Japanese and English song night as were all his previous Tsai-ko Anniversary Karaoke Calls.

There has been suggestions that an annual Japanese-English Memorial Karaoke Call be held for him in January . Stay tuned and send me an email at stevem.hnl (at) gmail so I can add you to the karaoke list.

Good “Black” Aloha Friday Morning Folks!

I really like ST’s article today! Very inspiring!

…””We have to be grateful for every day because tomorrow is not promised,” quarterback Ikaika Woolsey said. “It was a wake-up call to be thankful for everything we have. We’re truly blessed.”

    Yes, truly blessed!

    I couldn’t respond . . . I was sleeping off dinner.

Great article in SF Chron today on San Jose State football revival. Focus, to transform the team from JC and other transfers to a magnet team for local HS talent. They really have momentum and players and coaches are pre-sold on the program. Maybe they do not get the 4 stars like Stanford, but they develop players in their system well. Took three years of patience. Key to success: the players have bonded, love the coach, the program and play up. Very inspiring! Good Kharma!

Stock Market closed on a very positive note.

    Have a nice long weekend.

    Just WIN, Warriors.

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  127. manoa November 23, 2012 8:31 am

125, inspiring and a model for us, but it was easier to be patient with SJSU, because the team was playing well from the start, scoring a lot of points out of their pistol and wildcat system, and losing well played games by a close score. They had big wins in the first two years– they beat Hawaii, Navy, Nevada, and Fresno, and lost to UCLA by 10 points, Nevada by 3 points, BYU by 13 points. In their very first year, they beat LaTech and Utah State scoring an average of 40 points a game, and they had a big game against Wisconsin, losing just 27-14.
