Happy ending

Well, that was an eventful year.
No need to rehash it, since I’m sure every news organization will do that today and tomorrow. But here’s something that turned up. It’s a letter from the owner of a construction company to Na Koa, the UH football booster club. It was written during the summer:
“I am pleased to make a donation in the amount of $1,000 to Na Koa Football Club in the name of Colt Brennan. Recently, Colt agreed to help my family with autographs on footballs and jerseys. When we asked what we could do for him, typical of Colt, he had no compensation expectations but suggested that if there was any interest in making a donation, that we make the donation to Na Koa so that it can contribute toward the successes of the UH football program.
“One of the autographed footballs will be going to a youngster in our family living in San Diego who is an avid fan of Colt’s and very recently found out he has Hodgkins disease. The football autographed by Colt will be a very special gift … as (he) faces a medical challenge for his young life.
“Colt is a very special young man, and he is sincerely appreciative for all he has done to provide hope and improve the UH football program, the university and to our state, and we owe him a debt of gratitude. It is clear that Colt believes in Na Koa and the support it provides to the UH football program, and I am glad to be able to act on his suggestion.”

SteveM, our archivist, suggested that when it’s the new year in your area, you post it. Like most of SteveM’s suggestions, this sounds like a good one.

    Warriors resolutions:

    1. Colt-like QB that can lead this R&S offense back to a BCS bowl.
    2. A stout offensive line that pass protects.
    3. A bend but don’t break secondary that does not give up big plays.
    4. Special teams that does not give up field position on kick-offs or punt returns and makes all the gimme field goals and extra points.
    5. A disciplined team that does not get flagged for personal fouls or holding penalties.

Here’s the trick. Check the top right. If it says HOME edition, that’s the good one. If it says STATE edition and you’re on Oahu, go slap your distributor. The State edition is the bogus one we print early. The Home edition is the one with all of the late-breaking stuff. They’re not supposed to sell any State editions on Oahu.

Our fine union leader agreed to have us go from getting paid once a week to once every other week.
Our leader also agreed that we go from HMSA to Summerlin.
And that reporters now can shoot photos and videos.
    But no contract yet.

Garret will probably report on this…

(CNN) — Baffled consumers are griping about a mysterious glitch that appeared to cause thousands of Zune music players to simultaneously stop working late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Microsoft issued the first Zune portable music player in 2006 to compete with the iPod.

Internet message boards have been flooded with complaints about Zune’s 30GB models freezing, prompting Y2K-like speculation about end-of-year hardware or software problems.

“It seems that every Zune on the planet has just frozen up and will not work,” posted a Mountain Home, Idaho, user on CNN’s iReport.com. “I have 3 and they all in the same night stopped working.”

Another iReporter said he was working the night shift at a Toys R Us store in Puerto Rico when his Zune player and the Zunes of four co-workers all failed about 1:30 a.m. ET Wednesday.

  57. BillB December 31, 2008 12:51 pm

KKid, do you have the same fond memories of the candy popcorn from Ben Franklin, believe it was about 25 or 50 cents for a freshly popped bag. I went to Liliuokalani also.

  58. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 31, 2008 12:53 pm

  59. BillB December 31, 2008 12:56 pm

KKid, one more thing the school lunches at Liliuokalani were da “bomb”, most home made style. Still remember when I had cafeteria duty and they served shoyu chicken. We ate after lunch service and the cafeteria manager put the pot on the table and it was all you could eat, was so, so ono. Don’t know if your mom was there during my stay, but if she was, boy she could really cook.

    when was this?

  81. Kaimuki Kid December 31, 2008 1:59 pm

If you went to Liliuokalani when they had the old wooden cafeteria then that was my aunt. If you were there when they had the cafeteria/auditorium then my aunt had already transfered to Palolo. This was before they installed the basketball court. To bad because of low enrollment they may close the school down and turn it into more office space for the State/DOE.

    Hello. Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Wow, been gone all day and coming back, the blog has gone completely nuts (in a good way). Never thought we would brake the record, just shows you what an unusual and fun community the Tsaikos are, great job.

Many times, feeling blue sometimes for whatever reason, I come to this blog, sometimes just lurking, but I always feel better, after reading the banter, jokes and even seriousness put forth by our extremely diversified community. There simply just isn’t another community like it in the cyber universe. Who would have thunk…..

To all my friends, known in person or not, I wish a very happy new year, a much better one than this dud just parting from our lives.

I hope everyone will keep the loving insanity going, so I can keep my sanity.

Our new President has some huge plates in front of him.

Two wars, a new (old) flaring middle east crisis, an economy completely in the crapper and the whole world looking to him to be the savior.

The best part I’ve seen from him sofar, he doesn’t appear to shrink from the huge challenges ahead, but rather seems to welcome them.

What I have deduced about him, digging as deep into his person as possible, is that he might be just the one. If he runs the show as professional and as focused as he ran his campaign, this country will experience a great revival over the next two years.

If he succeeds and is re-elected, he has the chance to go down as one of the greatest presidents in history. His roots, partially grown in Hawaii, will serve him well.

I didn’t mean to be political, I’m a centrist, but this young man has the power to affect all our lives and my prayers and good wishes are with him.

Celestial event tonight- look at the moon around sunset, Venus will be below it, and after sunset- should also be able to see Mercury and Jupiter below(if you draw a straight line from the moon thru Venus)
We only saw moon with Venus since the west mountain range in LV blocked the other planets.
Good viewing and be safe tonight gang.
Happy NY Celebration and use designated driver if necessary.

    da buggah not big enough.

and, he wasn’t recruited by UH.

    so what’s the big deal?

  115. oxymoron December 31, 2008 4:38 pm

given the way the hawaii bowl went, you wonder why UH wouldn’t be selling the shirts a lot cheaper…and no hats to be found either. just went on the rainbow boutique website and %&$#, hawaii bowl stuff is still at the original prices! do they maybe think hawaii won, or that it will increase in value because of the marque opponent? c’mon people, get with it, the massacre happened one week ago already! maybe the o-line coach is the same guy running the rainbow boutique concessions?

  118. AlaWaiPipeLayer December 31, 2008 4:49 pm

    Hey ST,
Tell the UL, the HA has lost touch with its Market.

The Older folks read the whole paper but the young market only looks for the highlights and googles the rest online. The paper needs to remake itself to add value to the consumer. You can get everything including the Longs Ad online.

The reporters alone, add value to the paper with insight and background on key stories. We don’t need in depth coverage of National and International news. We need the local scoops!

Local college, highschool and Hawaii sports need to be covered in-depth.
We want to know about local stars and celebrities. If athletes go away we need to know how they are doing.

We’d like to know about the sports and games of interest to locals, surfing, fishing, golf, running, biking, UFC and kids stuff.

In the HA the Hawaii section, Sports Section and Today need to be bigger than section A unless its local news coverage.

HA needs more ethnic coverage of local interest. News, events, shout-outs and boo-boos.

We’d like to know where the hotspots are located, the restaurants, clubs, bars etc.

The sales division needs to really hit the local advertisers for the print edition and the online needs to hit the national and international advertisers. Subscribtion should not be relied upon for the bottom line.
If the Sales and Management did their job, the HA would be FREE!

The execs should be the ones to pay the price because they are not delivering a palatable product.

To cut benefits to employees e.g. Summerlin (Terrible!) from HMSA and Kaiser is morale busting.l At least give you guys a choice.

I going get off the soap box now, cuz I gotta cook. But, I’m tired of hearing about management not delivering leadership and a product worth buying.

Hoist a toast of Aloha to 2008 and here’s wishing the Tsaikos a safe and Happy New Year!

  119. kama krab December 31, 2008 5:01 pm

    One more thing

Bradda Colt continue your great work. This story show how much our athletes can actually affect the community. We need more athletes like Colt. I think somebody out there that could be a big boost to our community would be someone by the Manti Te’o. He would be someone every young child in Hawaii could look up to wearing the colors of the home team University of Hawaii. I now it a very big long shot but this is the kind of shot all of us need going in a new year. Here’s to dreaming the big dream going into 2009. Bring on the new year.

Oh and Kekoa you got mail.

A great year with all the Tsaikos. From Nola to Halawa; the Sugar Bowl to the Hawaii Bowl – indeed an eventful year.
Thanks to ST for keeping it all here, keeping it all real, keeping it all up-to-date. πŸ™‚
Looking forward to the New Year with a little trepidation; talk of a rough year coming for Hawaii, the nation and the world 😐
Being able to share it with the folks here definitely makes it seem a little less foreboding.

And good by to a Frankenstein 2008…….

  130. Ralph December 31, 2008 7:20 pm

my point Al is if you need to operate the athletic depart like JD does he has to have products that sell, getting paying fans, to do so I think the fans would want a venue be it bb, fb, etc, that is entertaining and make them want to watch the event in person. There are a lot of UH fans who do not go to the event as paying customers, they rather listen to it on radio and if the game isn’t entertaining they tune out. But if the competition is good or at least attractive, example, Norte Dame football with a 6-6 record, they will come out to the event and many more will view on TV generating tv revenue…

  131. Ralph December 31, 2008 7:24 pm

under 6K viewed the game vs GW at the SSC…UH did not post the attendance for the Pepperdine and championship game…attendance Al is for the entire day of the tournament featuring several games…MBB needs a boost to make people come out to watch and not just because they are fans because a lot of us can be fans at home cheering them on

  132. roysan16 December 31, 2008 7:30 pm

    Good Evening

My favorite local sport’s story of 2008 is the Wapio Little League team winning the Championship. The other stories might have a bigger impact in drawing interest, but after while of reading about JJ leaving, HF being fired and the Warriors getting beat in the Sugar Bowl it gets old. What the boys did by winning touched off a whole avalanche of tears because I was so happy for them. Of all the 2008 local stories this one touches my heart and it had what the others didn’t have–a happy ending. For me I was in traffic that Saturday morning and I’ll never forget when the last out was recorded and the radio announcer describing the pandemonium in the Wapio dugout. It was so definitely a feel good local moment. And it was evident that other motorist driving nearby were tooting their horns in celebration, too. Fifty years from now nobody will remember or care about JJ leaving, and certainly not care about the HF firing, and presumably some will remember the Sugar Bowl but what these boys did on the National/World stage in front of a world wide audience and being tops, number 1, out all the tens of thousands of teams out there this is truly remarkable… it speaks volumes of the Wapio Team–being acclaimed as champions. The other stories leave their footprints, the Wapio story tugs at my heart.

  143. Garret December 31, 2008 9:07 pm

Remember the player who faked his recruiting earlier this year? He’s going to be on ESPN’s Outside the Lines on Sunday.

Remember the strange story of the high school kid who faked his commitment to Cal just before signing day last year? He told everyone he had offers from big-time programs, but really wasn’t being recruited at all.

You can find out what happened to him and why he did it on ESPN’s Outside the Lines on Sunday.

While Hart did take unofficial visits to the Universities of Nevada, Oregon and Washington, he was rated as only a potential walk-on and was never offered a scholarship, yet had his parents and coaches believing him, each thinking the other was handling recruiting. Hart was eventually recruited by Feather River College, a junior college in Northeastern California where he has a chance to be starting right guard next season.

    Good evening Tsai-kos!!

Happy New Year to all on the Mainland and other overseas areas!

Interesting day. Ran around town – car registration payment, Costco, Circuit City, dinner @ Anna Millers, visit to sis’ house to say Happy New Year and then to drool over Keanu Reeve (“Day the Earth Stood Still”) at Windward Mall. Around 9pm, the fire alarm goes off in the theater and we all leave. False alarm, so we go back in, they start up the movie, alarm goes off again. Happened about 10 times. Sometimes, the pix would start with the “radio” you get before the lights go down. We gave up after 15 mins and went home.

Only two “accidents” so far – one barf and one poopie – but we’re over an hour away from the Big Time Boom.

Don’t have the official attendance figures in front of me, but yesterday the Stan Sheriff Center probably had close to 5,000 people with another 3,000 pre-sold tickets for the 5th place contest.

Of course, the latter purchasers don’t buy stuff at the concession stands which generates a nice chunk of change money for the Athletic Department through vendor fees. Wonder how many bought the PPV?

Following the UH game about 80% left even though the championship game was coming up. For a market with no professional sports teams, fans here are not very fanatic.

Made a horrendous mistake at Starbucks earlier today by ordering one of their specialty Fraps identifed as a Light Drink. Thought it was light because of it was made with non-fat milk but it turns out that instead of sugar they made it with a man-made artifical sweetener. Spent the next several hours galloping back and forth to the batruum – finally called the store and found out what was in the drink.

Am still feeling really junk. Had to skip a real dinner and eat a piece of bread to help soak up the stuff in my system.

And, no, that is not my effluvia described above.

Happy New Year everyone. Will have the details of the contest we’re sponsoring up within the next 30 hours or so. It does involved attending home regular season games from January 2 through the end of baseball season. Here are the scheduled games through next Monday night:

Women’s Basketball: UH v.Pepperdine, 3 pm Friday, January 2; Pepperdine v Colorado, 3 pm Saturday January 3; Colorado, 5 pm, Sunday, January 4.

They then go on the road: January 8 – Fresno; January 10 – San Jose State; January 12 – Boise State.

Men’s Basketball: Boise State, 7:05 pm Saturday, January 3; LaTech, 7:05, Monday, January 5.

They then go on the road: Idaho, January 8; Boise State, January 10.

Men’s Volleyball: Outrigger Hotels Invitational, Thursday, January 8 – 10. More details next week.

.Have to go calm down Saturn The Dog who has just gone ballistic (pun intended) over the artillery assault on Enchanted Lake.

Maybe I should take him for a ride in Saturn The Car one of these days – except I don’t know anyone who owns one.

jm2375 — I concur. Looking back, it was not just about breaking a record… it was about burying a record that was set on a very sad and disturbing day (news that JJ was going to SMU).

It was fitting that record be overshadowed as we end this roller coaster year and clear the decks for 2009. Much kudos to whitey who started it, brew808, LizKauai and las vegas (in several forms)… no wonder they are Tsai-ko Chapter Presidents … πŸ™‚
