Hall to women’s VB; Warriors ready for recruiting run

hall
Jeff Hall, a good coach and a great guy, is moving two offices down in switching from associate head coach for men’s volleyball to associate HC for women’s volleyball and head coach of the sand volleyball team.

“It’s bittersweet,” said Hall, who had a role in recruiting every player on the Warriors’ roster.

The Warriors have depth, talent and are “in a great position to make a run for the championship,” Hall said.

Because of HR rules and such, there might not be title changes (for a while), but this is the expected scenario:

> Milan Zarkovic will fill Hall’s role as associate head coach.

> Spencer McLachlin will fill Zarkovic’s role.

* * * * *

Wednesday is the last of the NCAA football dead period, then things will come alive Thursday as the Warriors try to build the roster. There are visits scheduled for the next three weekends.

Solomon Matautia’s commitment was huge. He’s a big hitter with range who can be used as strong safety — where he was All-State first team the past two seasons — or outside linebacker.

Look for the Warriors to fill needs at running back, offensive tackle, nose tackle and the secondary in the next couple weeks.

will Chow speak on the mid year enrollees since school started today?

  2. letsgowarriors January 12, 2015 8:32 am

i understand if Chow waits until Wednesday or Thursday though, since Mariota will dominate the headlines today and tomorrow.

  3. Ipu Man January 12, 2015 8:44 am

Good golley, Tsai, you get good stuff even tho you are a long way off.
    Must be your ribs. 🙂

  4. Scottie Too Hottie January 12, 2015 8:50 am

Norm Chow definitely needs to fill his most critical recruiting need, and that position is punter. Good thing is that UH is the best school to play for if youʻre a punter. youʻll get a lot of game time reps.

  5. jm2375 January 12, 2015 8:53 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to Jeff Hall! I’ll miss seeing him and his family at Warrior VB games.

Welcome to the Warrior ohana, Mr. Matautia!

  6. jeezy33 January 12, 2015 8:54 am

    Just a thought…

How much money does MM generate for local businesses over past couple weeks? Heisman shirts, local sports bars, etc?? I expect the bars to be full today on a usual dead business day for certain restaurants.

Just crazy to think 1 person makes without making a dime off our… until he gets drafted… I’m sure Phil knight will take care of him for life if he wins tonight.

  7. jeezy33 January 12, 2015 8:59 am

It’s crucial Hawaii doesn’t whiff at cornerback this year… we’ve been signing a lot of dbs the past recruiting classes and it’s still a weakness here.. for this system to work, we need guys that can cover and not get beaten deep constantly.

    j33,

Also like Alohi Gilman as another invited walk-on…..

  11. jeezy33 January 12, 2015 9:47 am

    9. Gilman already has D1 offers to Navy and FCS schools so I don’t think he would come to UH unless we offered. We seem pretty solid at Safety so I don’t think we will offer. I do think he’s a better athlete than Ramos though.

  12. al January 12, 2015 9:50 am

good to see that i am not alone as i’ve been touting alohi gilman for months now.

  13. al January 12, 2015 9:51 am

we still need playmakers at wr.

  14. al January 12, 2015 9:52 am

…and how about a pr/kr who is a threat to take it to the house on every touch?

  15. letsgowarriors January 12, 2015 9:53 am

random, but the play this weekend that Harbaugh is complaining about regarding NE Patriots having only 4 OL. June Jones actually ran a similar play on 4th down against Alabama in 2002. Timmy ended up mis-firing to Abu Maafala who was open for a TD. we lined Ikaika Curnan up in the slot position, on the line of scrimmage and he was covered up by the outside WR. so he was ineligible and just stood there after the snap.

the play is a lot harder to pull off in college bc i believe u need to have 5 players with #s 50-79 while on offense. i guess the NFL does not require that, just that you have to report as ineligible.

  16. Z January 12, 2015 10:02 am

I really like Gilman. He is the type of player who can play offense or defense. I hope we offer. I think he wants to play here.

  17. letsgowarriors January 12, 2015 10:02 am

    Josey transferring too

  18. jeezy33 January 12, 2015 10:06 am

    12. The only athletes I hope we offer moving forward are track speed guys. We already have commitments from Matautia, Afalava, and redshirted Mulanga with Daniel Lewis at safety… Hawaii also greyshirted Pumba Williams so wouldn’t be smart to have a abundance of scholarship guys going to safety position. Got to fulfill needs now.

On top of the positions ST mentioned, we do need 1 more elite speed WR too. Jan 30th is going to be a huge weekend.

  19. gigi-hawaii January 12, 2015 10:19 am

    So, how’s everybody today?
Looking forward to the big game this afternoon.
Trouble is I have to cook dinner during the game.

Hubby told me that Pat Bowlen, the owner of the Broncos, has Alzheimer’s. I was surprised to hear this. Wonder if he still has a home in Hawaii.

  20. SteveM January 12, 2015 10:28 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Congrats to Jeff Hall!

  21. st. anthony trojan January 12, 2015 10:52 am

Hope n wish 4 great game 2 day…n the final outcome decided ib the last minute or so…hope both QB’s do well….n MM has a great day….N DOES WELL…

Just hope no blowout like the Wisconsin game…that would indeed be hard to swallow…

Agree with most here…speed burners are a commodity that is not available on the field…we sure can use more on defense and especially on our WR’s…

  22. Haleakala January 12, 2015 12:05 pm

Solomon M also sounds like he has smarts besides being a good player.

  23. Stephen Tsai January 12, 2015 12:23 pm

“Jerry Jones Stadium” is an amazing place. (It’s Stretch’s home-away-from-home stadium.)

  24. bowwar January 12, 2015 12:55 pm

We must recruit speed…Size is a consideration, but when it gets to special positions, you gotta recruit speed. We definitely need a couple of speed burners at WR and CB that can double as KR & PR. We also need a top notch punter and PK…I hope we don’t neglect special teams, as we saw how it kept us in games this past year. Also, recruiting another Freshman QB wouldn’t hurt…

  25. Boolakanaka January 12, 2015 1:06 pm

Yes–speed on the perimeter has to improve.

On other news–damn John Fox axed by the broncos–talking about high standards….

  26. 3-Prong January 12, 2015 1:07 pm

The suspense is killing me. GO DUCKS!

  27. Ipu Man January 12, 2015 1:11 pm

scramble oceanic channel 22. Not too bad.

  28. Tanman January 12, 2015 1:17 pm

Looking back at Phil Steele’s 2014 College Football Preview magazine:

    Final 4: #4: Oklahoma, #3: Ohio State, #2: Alabama, #1: Florida State.
    Final: Florida State over Alabama.

3 out of 4 teams but no Oregon.

Heisman Prediction: 1. Marcus Mariota, 2. Jameis Winston, 3. Braxton Miller, 4. Bryce Petty…

    Correct about Marcus Mariota.

    So, is Phil Steele good?

  29. Derek January 12, 2015 1:54 pm

I don’t know if Steele is good, but his college preview is the best with so much information. He tends to rate teams by returning starters and tries to go by overall track records, the past season, and trends. His Power Sweep weekly picks during the season are average to me, but it is interesting reading. Nothing wrong with his analysis, but picking winners against the spread is not easy. 60% success is actually very good ATS.

  30. kapakahi January 12, 2015 1:56 pm

If true that Josey transferring, JMHO that an outside receiver……especially one with speed…..should also be high recruiting priority……with Haynes & Pedroza being seniors next season.

  31. jeezy33 January 12, 2015 2:03 pm

Phil Steele is as good as you can get for pre season predictions. Pretty hard scouting that many teams and positions. I never understood the Oklahoma hype but hard to argue with his work.

  34. kahuna January 12, 2015 2:58 pm

Josey will be in a big battle for PT and I think he knows it. As fast as Josey is, he did have a hard time catching the ball and is very slight in build.

Our receiver corps is still young with Stubblefield, Kemp and Barker. With the addition of Collie, Ursua, Ortisi, Ho, etc…Josey is going to have a hard time getting PT. Josey is really a project. Dude got speed to burn but not that polished as a receiver. Probably falls under the category of a Kawame Bowen.

Wish he could have stayed and shoot for his RS jr season to contribute but some of these guys wants to play and don’t want to bide their time.

  35. Marleysdad January 12, 2015 3:06 pm

Picking up some roast duck for pupu. Seems appropriate for todays game.

  38. Marleysdad January 12, 2015 3:49 pm

    Duck is delicious!

  39. Bryson January 12, 2015 3:57 pm

Josey is gone, always felt he should have gotten playing time last season…

  40. Shoko January 12, 2015 4:13 pm

    Josey probably got homesick.

  41. Shoko January 12, 2015 4:14 pm

Dat was a sick drop by the Ducks.

  42. Ipu Man January 12, 2015 6:34 pm

How will Hawaii stop Ohio’s running game next year?
Maybe just lay down in all the gaps.

  43. Ipu Man January 12, 2015 6:45 pm

NFL draft day should pick Ohio’s tackles, etc. ahead of qb’s.
They deserve a big pay day…

    Ducks looking like duck soup.

  51. Fei Jai January 12, 2015 7:27 pm

Congrats to all the Hawaii braddahs on the Oregon team! Good season. Nothing to be ashamed about. you all played in the national title game. That’s what counts. Next year brah.

  52. Z January 12, 2015 7:32 pm

Need to hire OSU oline coach.

  53. mytake January 12, 2015 7:39 pm

    HAIL OHIO STATE!

  54. Derek January 12, 2015 8:12 pm

My early prediction: Ohio St. 77, Hawaii 0. At least Hawaii gets a million dollars for their troubles to Columbus. My friends are going to make that trip. I said no thanks. Buckeyes running game is very awesome. The only question is who is going to be the QB, but it won’t make a diffference. You saw it for yourself. Urban Meyer ran up the score. They could have taken a couple of knee downs and the game was over. No, they gave it to Elliott to try to score again in a meaningless touchdown. No wonder, Greg McMackin didn’t like Meyer.

  55. st. anthony trojan January 12, 2015 8:22 pm

Me will take 77 1/2…you get a bet…DEREK…he he he

  56. Fei jai January 12, 2015 8:30 pm

Derek. With norm at the helm, methinks that score no out of realm of sane prediction.

  57. hitman January 12, 2015 9:30 pm

    sept 12, 2015 big game for UH !! 58. pollypicador January 12, 2015 9:54 pm

I am not the least surprised.

    It’s par for the course.

On the biggest day of the college football year, where the newspaper sends it’s writers to cover the title game because of the Hawaii connection…the readers of this blog get nothing. Squat.

No observations, tidbits, quotes, insights, pictures-nothing…and this is after all the “big game day”…nothing. After all readers do want to know what’s going on (and nobody cares about stretch’s home away from home…that doesn’t count).

    Hello. Anyone home?

    Never mind.

    This is disappointment.

  59. jeezy33 January 12, 2015 11:36 pm

    34. Pretty lame statement. Most teams go way more in depth about the players and usually have quotes from one of the coaches breaking down each recruit. Object is to get fans excited and promote UH football. Russell Williams was a All American and it should definitely been noted.

  60. SteveM January 12, 2015 11:52 pm

    RE: #59
Pollypicador — I hear you, but one has to consider that ST is hired by the Star-Advertiser to write stories and features for the print media and subsequently the Star-Advertiser web site, both of which generate revenue for the company. That’s ST’s first responsibility–they get the news first, then whatever does not compete/conflict on this free blog site.

But to be honest, ST has been posting all the secondary and off-the-wall stuff on Facebook and Twitter… note the Facebook and Twitter icons under his blog text above. Before Facebook and Twitter, ST used to publish all non-lead newspaper tidbits here on the blog. Times are changing and ST is getting spread a little thin. 🙁

  61. pollypicador January 13, 2015 1:13 am

The Oregon sports writer, Canzano, takes the air out of the balloon…so it’s not only SA’s.

A few days before the big game he writes in the Oregonian about how Oregon’s presence at the big game will affect attendance, ratings, viewership and fan’s conversations across the country. He basically says America public wanted a big name school (history, following, alumni) and that networks wanted a team with better market. In other words he’s pointing to a better matchup (numbers) that would capture more of the American public.

    Canzano, may be right.

    But he’s dumb.

A better sendoff, especially from a hometown sportswriter, would be an article that lifts the team, school and hometown fans. Not one that’s deflating. In an era where every player has excess to the media (via smartphones, laptops or word of mouth) …why send the players into battle with any stigmata ions that can weighs on their minds. Wouldn’t a wiser writer write an article that’s in the best interest of the team-spirit inducing, emotionally charging and pride fulfilling, especially right before the team goes into battle? I think so. But no…the Oregon hometown sportswriter doesn’t see it that way.

  62. pollypicador January 13, 2015 1:40 am

Is Meyer the real quarterback guru? Head coach?

Here he is with his third string quarterback, underdog in his teams last three playoff games, and his team doesn’t skip a beat. Remarkable.

Coming into the season 4 starters on the OL had to be replaced and when you watched the team last night the unit looked well seasoned, talented. That, too, is remarkable.

Meyer, undoubtedly, plays his cards right.

The one thing I remember from the Florida-Hawaii game (back in 2010?) was a quote from the play-by-play announcer on how Meyer had his team back then practice a fake punt play 78 times in a row…that tells you something about how Meyer coaches (in contrast Chow is noteworthy of conducting practices with five minute stations).

  63. A-house January 13, 2015 8:13 am

    3-Prong:

    your #48:

you bet’chum – my dream – 5 seconds to play with OSU at our 3 yard line and they run the same TE play for the TD in NCG

UH DC tells the DBs to watch for this play and tells the safety to watch the TE with the CB taking the WR – UH safety plays far back enough in the end zone to fool the OSU QB who fires a pass to the his TE near the end zone line – as soon as the QB cocks his arm to throw, UH safety breaks for the ball, intercepts and goes 100 yards for the winning TD!!

    how’s that for a scenario?

actually, family says we go in, look around, maybe buy some stuff, eat, watch the kick-off and start for the busses – the walk to bus will take a while as we will be in the nose bleed section.

at least UH players can say they played against the 2014 NC – any other MWC team can say that?

  64. Ipu Man January 13, 2015 8:47 am

UH got chance to beat Wisconsin 🙂

  65. Ipu Man January 13, 2015 8:50 am

Someone on the Bobby Curran radio show this morning
mentioned that Ohio State Offensive line seemed to be
“holding” a lot but not being called out for it.
BC agreed and said that it seems normal for the big 10.

  66. jeezy33 January 13, 2015 8:57 am

    66. Is that some kind of joke or excuse? Oregon holds more than any team in the country.. People constantly find a way to make excuses…. Hawaii people all want to blame Oregon WRs too.. Geez.

  67. Andrew January 13, 2015 9:05 am

UH should just get out of that game against Ohio State already. They really have nothing to gain from going up there. Definitely can’t afford to lose any players to injury in the process before conference season starts.

  68. 3-Prong January 13, 2015 9:11 am

A-House: Looks like we’re going to have to load the box to stop the run. DBs are going to have to play the games of their lives. Looking forward to it. GO BOWS!

  69. Ipu Man January 13, 2015 9:20 am

Good morning Jeezy33, hope you are having a wonderful day.
