Question for Greg Alexander later today…

Greg, looking back at your performance last season what did you feel was the most important thing for you to work on in the off-season to take your play to another level and why? Also, which of the receivers who sat out last year do you feel could have a big impact this year and have a breakout season?

Good luck this season, I envision you throwing for over 3000yds, rushing 300yds+, with 30+ td’s!

  21. wafan June 23, 2009 7:14 am

Why is it called reality when they are manipulated and, thus, behave differently? Once the camera is there . . .

This is part of the connected generation problem where they feel they have to perform — and why they feel nothing when it comes to cheating, lying, stealing, ethics and morals — because anything goes in order to win the game.

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid June 23, 2009 7:14 am

    Greg,

Of all the other quarterbacks who:
    has the strongest arm?
    is the most accurate?
    has the best footwork?
    knows the offense the best?
    will be your biggest competitor?

After watching films of your past performance what did you feel that you needed to work on the most?

  51. Colomaohana June 23, 2009 8:02 am

    Kekoa:

George is Jason Alexander’s character from Seinfeld.

  52. addahknowjoe June 23, 2009 8:11 am

If getting an impromptu, unprovoked, swift kicked from the side from time to time qualifies as a sidekick den yeah, A-Sports.

But ST, wouldn’t you be the ultimate sidekick to Wena?

  53. Fan-O-War June 23, 2009 8:13 am

    2 questions for Greg Alexander:

    1. At this time last year, Tyler Graunke was considered to be the heir apparent to Colt Brennan. This year you are the established #1 QB on the depth chart. Is there a difference in the way you approach the pressure and expectations of being #1?

    2. Watching you play, it is apparent that you have the prototypical NFL size and arm strength. Do you have any expectations or aspirations of reaching the next level?

  54. Kekoa June 23, 2009 8:15 am

Mama C-Ta ~ I’m old school. Watched too many cahtoon shows. I see from this morning’s post…I’m not da only one!

These slap and tickle sitcoms take place in a small space that is packed with too much dialogue. Sometimes, it’s regional comedy that we don’t think is as funny as Rap, Andy, Frank or Augie. To each his own, I guess. Even Homey is funnier than mainland sitcoms…but then, he was built for fun!

  55. NYUH June 23, 2009 8:28 am

A general question not meant for Greg.

How much speed can a recruit be counted on to improve? Can a 4.7 safety in high school be expected to improve to 4.5? Or are the human mechanics of speed pretty set? Does UH have the type of computerized analysis that can analyze a player’s mechanics and improve them significantly?

  56. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2009 8:34 am

    wafan,
sup, yup we doing good out here, but soon going get lil bit akshon once we go play in different sandbox across the way. Anyway, I’ll back in the islands when pau so I might catch you at one game…

  58. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2009 8:43 am

    NYUH,
Can improve speed if the player works at it. My boy Chad Owens wasn’t necessarily the fastest guy but he had quicks and juke moves to break ankles all day. I believe he was in the 4.7 range in high school and got way faster while at UH.

Ashley Lelie was fast but I remember he too would work on his speed. I remember seeing him early in the morning running sprints and working on his agility all the time.

    greg “da great” alexander

i, for one believe that we will open some eyes this year. i love it when all the prognosticators belittle our team. it just gives us more incentive to prove them all wrong.

from all reports the one guy who has stepped up as a ;eader from the end of the last game to now has been none other than you.

was this the result of your newborn confidence in our offense?
was it a result of urging by others to take the lead or did you just take it upon yourself to pick up the team on your shoulders?

do you envision a rotation of receivers or a basic four starters who will smell most of the action?

of the slotbacks and wide receivers, who do you think has really picked up their game this year, please include some of the new guys?

finally, whew, when do you graduate and what is your major?

i, am many others are already excited and can’t wait for the opening gun. here’s hoping for a great season.

  62. Pauoa Boy June 23, 2009 8:52 am

    More questions for Greg Alexander…

Greg what is your favorite local kine grinds?
Have you taken up surfing while in the islands and what is your favorite beach?
Who on the team that plays a different position do you think has some skills to play QB not including Inoke?
Although you cannot get hit in practice who is the one guy on our defense that would make you she-she pants that you would hate to take a hit from?

    Hi al-

    I was reading yesterday’s blog…

    # al:

i wonder how a reverse mullet would taste steamed with black bean sauce?

You are the only person I know who can theoretically make anything sound good. I guess the same would go for an old shoe. I haven’t really tasted your cooking, but I’m guessing that you CAN make an old shoe taste good.

    ST-

Is there a section where we can go back and watch old “Wai and Tsai” shows?

  67. Dirty Commish June 23, 2009 9:05 am

    Questions for Greg:

Colt had often mentioned that he had a eureka moment where the offense just became clear to him and the game slowed down.

Did you ever have a moment like that and if so, do you recall when it was?

Also, do you hate that Colin Kaepernick (sp) from Nevada as much as I do? Just when you think you got him, he takes three steps and is like, 20 yards downfield.

Is it satisfying to know that you can dish out some pain to defenders as much as they try to dish out to you when you lower your head and just plow over them?

Have you ever challenged coach Rolo to a manly man beard contest?

  68. al June 23, 2009 9:06 am

asports….i prefer to eat a good meal rather cook.

so, take that old shoe and marinate it in some nice red wine with some savory and basil. then braise for five hours on a low temp oven. if you can find mom’s old dutch oven better yet. saute some maui onions, crused garlic, and portabella mushrooms in butter add it to the braised shoe and slow cook until it is fork tender.

make sure ajoe has had a few so he doesn’t smell the toejams.

  72. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 9:09 am

upgrading future warrior interconference schedules to include usc and colorado means we must measure our recruiting efforts somewhere betw the best in the WAC with these teams if we expect to rebuild and upgrade…. 2 local receivers tiptoeing to barely reach 68 inches w average speed at best at that position is not exciting, neither is a QB shunned by ASU….these recruits need lots of sugar coatin’…..where are the hogs?

    MAHALO!!!

  77. letsgowarriors June 23, 2009 9:19 am

pauoa boy, its very hard to improve speed. owens still ran a 4.7-8 in high school, at UH and after UH.

you can play fastER when you get more comfortable with the system. you can work on making quicker cuts, being more explosive and setting up your moves so you appear faster.

  78. Addahknowsports© June 23, 2009 9:19 am

I’d also like to hear Alexander’s answer to dirty commish’s first question in #67.

  80. roysan16 June 23, 2009 9:21 am

Sidekick–One name, one person, one assistant coach comes to mind as I look at Hawaii High School football

Vince Passas–(has it been that long… close to 30 years at St. Louis H.S?) IMO Passas was to Cal Lee and St. Louis HS. football as McMahon was to Carson, for they both personify the true meaning of the word sidekick in a sense they excepted their roles and supported their bosses unconditionally. For Passas, still relatively young (mid 50s), a St. Louis alum will probably be around for awhile at the school.

Looking at a favorite quote on Passas-(from the other paper)

Cal Lee (9/2/98) on Passas: “He’s worked with the defensive backs, receivers . . . I think he’s finally found a home with the quarterbacks because all the quarterbacks that he’s worked with for the last 15, 16 years have turned out to All-State caliber quarterbacks. He’s a good reflection of his coaching ability.”

  81. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] June 23, 2009 9:23 am

Greg Alexander– what are you studying in college and what are your post-football aspirations?

Addahknowsports- whole chicken- roasted in my Sunbeam roaster is my fave.
Whole Costco chicken- cut into small pieces, mixed with minced onions, diced apples and celery, wet down with Best Foods and served over lettuce and grape tomatoes. Don’t forget freshly ground pepper.

    whoosh!

  82. al June 23, 2009 9:27 am

dave lancaster – ed kaahea, kalei eggs…too good.

  83. letsgowarriors June 23, 2009 9:31 am

its easier to gain weight than get faster, which is probably why mack likes to move players down a position to get more speed on the field.

  84. al June 23, 2009 9:38 am

i used to be faster but now that i have gained weight….never mind.

  85. rich2176(Blackberry) June 23, 2009 9:38 am

    Good morning everyone.

Great day of golf with JD (who is still under the weather) at JJKs tournament. JJ raised lots of money for Hawaiian studies. Spent time talking to Timmy Chang who has given up football and pursuing further education.

  86. al June 23, 2009 9:39 am

soon dana will name her assistant coaches.
early rumors were da houl and serena valdez.
she should pick just one of vince’s former coaches but not two.
then, it would be her staff.

expecting to hear about another recruit soon.

  87. chawan_cut June 23, 2009 9:41 am

  88. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 9:41 am

i wrote at sawgrass, no one was interested–but to sum bethpage black, tiger got screwed on the draw n played in the rain and the others that finished above him didnt (tw finished highest in his draw n watson and stricker were behind woods and played on the same side)….secondly, hitting mudballs is never easy n the greens were suppossed to be at 14.5 on the stimpmeter (second only to augusta) and were rain drenched and slow, allowing the second group to take advantage and put up better scores………later it was difficult to read cuz it was literally wrecked by constant rolling by the squeegies and constant rain…when tw played w the other players–he outperformed them….btw….competitive recruiters from other programs are using the st photos of our players scaling a 12′ fence to practice at cooke as a recruitin weapon …LOL!

Good morning Tsaikos….hope all have a good day.

Question for Greg Alexander. What adjustments have you worked on over the spring to make yourself an even more impressive and explosive QB?

  96. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 10:08 am

letsgowarriors–at first i viewed the idea of moving players to upgrade and increase speed at positions as smart and representing a traditional blueprint in big-time programs….the caveat of course being instinct at the new position, not always an auto, especially those converted to lb….other than josh leonard (de to dt) and perhaps fonoti (lb to de), results are slow….we have yet to see success at s to lb or cb to s….true, mac is only in his sedcond year….keep watching….i would like to see switching DLM to OLM. D linemen as a rule r more athletic and have quicker feet…..but mac wont do it–for the same reason jj was reluctant to move receivers to cb.

  97. Kahu mahu June 23, 2009 10:12 am

    JJ
I think koa mahu has made major explosive adjustments for you.

Oops. I did not know question was for Alexander. Sorry.

  98. al June 23, 2009 10:20 am

wf2….so, did you actually go to bethpage or did you watch it on tv?

  99. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 10:23 am

its ok to gain weight but your fat content:to body mass must be monitored—which it is not a uh….u know the rest…..blaze will do do better at his lighter weight and current diet–do not gain another pound!….best wishes to Mr Soares in staying healthy and achieving his mark.

  100. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 10:23 am

    al…u need to chill out.

  101. letsgowarriors June 23, 2009 10:34 am

blaze at ~230 is a good playing weight. hes not moving positions, so he shouldnt be gaining more weight.

the reason the j leonard move worked is bc he had the frame to gain the weight, in addition to having the strength to move down a position. i see several on this team that may benefit w/ a position move, but they would need to gain teh strength to do so. mana silva and aaron brown to OLB. l davis back to safety. we’ll see if this brashton move works out.

mack is recruiting longer players, so i can see more moves in the future. aulola tonga and joey iosefa both have longer frames and should/could grow into OLBs.

  102. jm2375 June 23, 2009 10:38 am

methinks a-joe is the sidekick to a-sports, not the other way around.

  103. Kekoa June 23, 2009 10:50 am

WF2 ~ I heard that the hecklers (drunken idots) that were anti-TW, PM, and some of the other leaders, got totally outta line. Did you happen to witness any of those ‘celebrated’ incidents?

Also, I’m guessing the groundskeeper and his staff were up all night trying to recover the course from all that weather. They seem to have done a fantastic job of making it look playable, and look good on TV. Do you think they should modify the rules for picking up the ball, cleaning it, and getting a free drop?

I agree that TW got the short end of the deal, but then, that’s the way the ball bounces. I’m surprised he stayed, especially after the angry exchange with the hecklers. Do they really need to have beer sales on the course? I say tie ’em to a ball wash stand for golfers to wipe their clubs on!

The course was a true monster to deal with, and the final round hole placements made it even worse. 18 looked like the most impossible hole to approach. Which other did you note?

Are you back home covering the tournament on the big island?

  104. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 10:50 am

I agree w j leonard–he had the perfect attributes to make the switch….but what about Chris?
I have my doubts about mana switching to lb and havent heard anything abuot aaron brown switching from his projected safety position….tonga is a versatile and a bonafide athlete w multi-hops to convert–i believe he has solid instincts and can make adjustments.

  105. mctruck June 23, 2009 10:57 am

    wafan,

I totally agree with your-#21 comment.

with that said….side kick-shot of taqilla w/a beer back, or visa-versa.

  106. d1島 June 23, 2009 11:01 am

  107. madeinhawaii June 23, 2009 11:25 am

Scotch and water… burbon and water… whiskey and water… rum and water … all will get you drunk…

What do they have in common?

    Water!

    Gotta avoid that stuff!

    hic…

  108. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 11:26 am

negative on tiger that i heard in chorus but they got down on padrig in the second round and chided angel along the fairways….the usga is against p/up, clean and placement on THE FWs (as oppossed to the pga)….they did allow it close to the green rough and in some instances where an unnatural condition was created by the weather….lol….such as puddles….personally, im a traditionalist w exception, this week provided bunches not including mudballs.
the 15th @ black is brutal. it plays over 450 and the last 180 cant be seen from the fairway and elevates 60′ to green but i believe the 12th played toughest….15th is the worst, imo.
look, the course was a wreck– crew and volunteers notwstanding (there were hundreds)….yeah, davis talked about the breaks to c.h.a…..i dont buy it….the first round should have been tko….the forecasts support that.
i dont do local Ts but i will venture to bethesda shortly and visit college park n the terps….former haunts along the potomac that serve great crepesuzette in georgetown.

  109. jojo ® June 23, 2009 11:37 am

JM#### is right! I think A-Sports is a great sidekick to A-Joe, or is it the other way around?

I like poi sidekick to beef stew

  110. Kekoa June 23, 2009 11:40 am

WF2 ~ Crepes!…my fave to make and devour!

Former haunts along the Potomac would also include…?

Puddles were already covered. I would think inclement weather would allow more leeway. I guess they figure Tiger walks on water in his commercial so WTH!

  111. madeinhawaii June 23, 2009 11:42 am

    Question for Alexander,

There must be a lot of things going through your mind as the #1 quarterback for the Warriors going into camp.

    1) Compared to last season, what’s got you most excited about the offense?
(i.e… What is the biggest difference or greatest area of improvement in the offense? Second ? Third? etc)

    2) With your improved arsenal of receivers and Inoke and Leon as running/blocking backs, how much greater are your expectations this season offensively?

    3) How good will our new Defense be? What makes you think that?

    4) Can the O-line cut down on the sack count this year?

    5) Who, whom or what will be our biggest surprise coming out of next season?

    6) Last season, it was suggested that you were telegraphing your intended target at the start of each play by looking too long in his direction. Have you worked on disguising your intentions?

    7) What is Greg Alexander’s greatest area of improvement going into the 2009 season?

    8) What 2-3 players on the Warrior Defense would intimidate you the most if you were playing on another team?

    9) Is there a NFL team you’d like to play for in particular?

    10) Of each of your backup quarterbacks (Rausch, Austin, and Moniz) … what quality or skill does each possess that you especially respect?

    11) So, are you ready to lead?

  112. Bulla June 23, 2009 11:45 am

    aloha to all the tsaikos,

sidekicks….hmmm, that is an interesting one…haha

good to have the QB on the spot today, let’s get the real scoops from the guy in the poops, haha

have a great day one and all…..

  113. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 12:06 pm

there were “uncovered” puddles in the first round at black while in play, the rain came down too fast to clear (they swept rather than covered)….parts of bethpage used to be a swamp (18th) and it drains…..haunts along the potomac would include arlington, NW, DC (georgetown)….i love crepes on the pan over an open flame prepared at your table.

  114. Stephen Tsai June 23, 2009 12:11 pm

I thought somebody would say: Sidekick to T-Mobile.

  115. warriorfanny2 June 23, 2009 12:34 pm

    Q for greg alexander:
aloha and best wishes this year Greg.

    1. what is your comfort level with the O this season in terms of getting the ball out of your hands quicker.
    2. what benefit does Salas shift to slot bring to your game.

Again, aloha and best wishes for a great year.

  116. SailorBlue June 23, 2009 12:39 pm

Good news for my boys at Navy, but no so good news for the Warriors…its going to be so hard which team to cheer for…

    ————-

Navy Picked To Go 9-4 By Lindy’s Preseason College Football Magazine
Mids expected to win the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy for a seventh-straight year

Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo

    June 23, 2009

ANNAPOLIS, Md.–Lindy’s Preseason College Football Magazine projects Navy to go 9-4 during the 2009 season and pick up a seventh-consecutive Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. The Mids, ranked 66th by the magazine, are expected to beat Louisiana Tech (ranked 75th), Air Force (77th), Hawaii (89th), Temple (104th), SMU (106th), Rice (108th), Army (112th) and Western Kentucky (120th), while losing to Ohio State (8th), Wake Forest (30th), Notre Dame (37th) and Pittsburgh (41st).

  117. July Jones June 23, 2009 12:40 pm

  143. Kekoa June 23, 2009 3:29 pm

I think Navy will give Ohio a few things to think about. Coach Ken will have a high spirited team of well conditioned athletes.

Civilians forget that these guys are in a physical atmoshphere about 12 hours a day at a minimum. Drill & Ceremony training is physical. PT is a daily requirement. Then there is lots of fb practice and weight training. What’s left is spent in skull sessions and academics.

Of course when they get here, it’ll be different. They will want to surf, chase women, and eat lots of local foods.

yeah, i was in florida in may and this is what these receivers all have in common–the schools that are after them: acc, sec, big ten and big east (not even looking at the big12 or pac10).

jarvis runs a legit 4.3. he is all of 5′ 6″, 145, but when you watch him play, you know exactly why schools like Florida State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, West Virginia, Syracuse, and South Florida have offered. Rarely do you find legit 4.3 prospects, but this st petersburg resident is one of them.

c’mon, r u comparing the 2 local smurfs we recruited to these dudes?

keola antolin was another good smurf prospect out of LV but we blew it away w the corbin brown debacle.

Fox Sports think that Colt has no shot to play this season, even if wins the #2 QB spot and Campbell struggles all season.

The second year in Zorn’s offense, Campbell should only improve. Is he on a short leash? Maybe not.

Washington’s backups — 38-year-old Todd Collins and 24-year-old Colt Brennan, are just that — backups. The better camp battle will be between the two of them for the No. 2 spot. The ball’s in Campbell’s hands. And barring injury — or what ends up being an epically bad performance — that should be for the entire 2009 season.

    Short leash?

I’d be shocked if there’s even a leash at all.

  177. Garret June 23, 2009 6:55 pm

Press release from Central Arkansas about their national rankings. They have a DT, DE, and OT with preseason recognition:

The Bears are as high as tied for No. 8 (Lindy’s) and as low as No. 16 (Athlon) in the polls. UCA, which opens its season on Sept. 4 against the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, is ranked 11th by The Sporting News.

UCA senior Larry Hart, Lane Freiwald and Taylor Scott have been named preseason All-Americans by Southern Pigskin.com. Hart, the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year last fall, was a first-team selection at defensive end. You can improve your speed, you just gotta put in the work. No one wakes up one day and goes dayum I can run a 4.3s 40yd dash today. They obviously put in work to get there. It’s not hard to improve your speed, all it takes is work and not being lazy. For the record, Chad Owens is faster than a 4.7s in the 40, regardless of what the NFL has on record, and it’s not because he knows what he is doing on the field…it’s because he works relentlessly at it. You can obviously play faster when you know what you are doing but if you watch some film on Chad you can see he gets more seperation than what a 4.7s 40yd would indicate. Most DB’s are in the 4.3-4.5 range and he has outrun them.

Someone (I think it was Kekoa) asked about Notre Dame’s fundraising drive. This article from January 2008 mentions that they had already raised $1.2 billion as part of their fundraising drive. They were looking to get to $1.5 billion, but if they were at $1.2 billion last January, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reached $2 billion by now.

I was the Engineering representative at some fundraising events for Santa Clara University back when I worked there. One event held in LA included a *lot* of wealthy alumni and the money *really* flowed that night. Two of my students and I were there for Engineering and we were impressed with the way that event was run. When the event was over I snuck over and talked story with Kurt Rambis (SCU alum)–he was really nice and had some funny stories.

Notre Dame is much bigger than SCU and set much higher fundraising goals, and I’m impressed if they exceeded them. Between May 2007 and January 2008 they raised $1.1 billion…wow!

Notre Dame in May opened the public stage of a $1.5 billion fund drive, the largest in Catholic higher education, scheduled to end in 2011. Notre Dame has already raised more than $1.2 billion.

  180. Garret June 23, 2009 7:06 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

They did a 5-year study with the top recruits who became NFL draft picks and they found that the players in general had *slower* times at the NFL combine than they had before college. The conclusion was that the players could get bigger, but that they couldn’t really get faster. The only exception to this was how some of the pre-draft places teach the players track techniques to improve their start for the 40-yard dash…but that doesn’t show up on the field.

Of course, the results could just mean that the reported results (especially the hand-timed results!) are just overestimating the speed of recruits. Recruits want the fastest times reported and schools love to talk about how fast their players are, so nobody is really against inflating hand-timed 40-yard dash times.

  181. Garret June 23, 2009 7:07 pm

Oops, the last paragraph in #179 should have said $1.2 billion, not $1.1 billion.

  182. Garret June 23, 2009 7:12 pm

The Dolphins just gave a backup safety a 2-year extension for quite a bit of money…the article mentions that Bess wants an extension too. If a backup safety can get $2.35 million over 2 years, a starting WR or slotback should get much more than that! Maybe the Dolphins need to wait until training camp until they know if Bess is a starting WR or slotback…the WR spot would pay a lot more money.

Back-up safety Tyrone Culver, a solid special teams player in 2008 who made a number of nice plays in coverage during off-season practices, has signed a two-year contract extension, an NFL source confirmed.

Last season, Culver was released and re-signed by the team in the span of a week during October.

His extension, signed last month, will pay him $1.1 million in 2010 and $1.25 million in 2011.

But a number of key players continue to seek extensions or new contracts, including quarterback Chad Pennington, running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, wide receiver Davone Bess, tight end Anthony Fasano and linebacker Matt Roth.

  183. Garret June 23, 2009 7:23 pm

I guess because JJ’s Foundation is calling the trip to Samoa a medical mission and camp, it isn’t officially a recruiting situation. So, Tony Tuioti is going with Mac and Stutz1 to Samoa…Tony Tuioti will be great for UH in Samoa and I’m very, very happy that he’s going to be able to go!

I wish that Tony Tuioti could do off-campus recruiting, especially in Vegas where he has so many ties, but he’s great in his current position for UH. Maybe UH could have a camp in Vegas next summer–then Tony Tuioti could work the camp and take advantage of his many ties to the area. Plus, UH is definitely establishing a recruiting pipeline to Vegas and a camp could work well there.

  184. Garret June 23, 2009 7:26 pm

Thank you to JJ and his Foundation for inviting (and paying for) UH to give camps in Samoa! If he strictly thought about recruiting, he could invite some other school to go that wouldn’t have a big recruiting advantage in Samoa over SMU…

The $250k of medical supplies and free medical help will be very useful for Samoa, especially considering the economy times.

Some possible questions for QB Alexander might include:

😕 What steps have you taken to accelerate your read progressions and ball release?

😕 How do you rate the relative importance of holding onto the ball and suffering a possible sack, vs. dumping the ball and getting an incompletion?

😕 It seems that JC student athletes are at a severe disadvantage entering the program if they don’t have their AA and credentials in order arrive early (to enter school at the beginning of Summer, or even better – Spring semester). Do you have any advice for future JC Warriors?

😕 As returning starting QB, do you see yourself as a team leader and have you assumed that responsibility? The reports I’ve read seem to indicate that you have. That’s great!

    … back to lurking 🙄

I think it’s interesting that people think hand-held times are always faster than electronic times. I would think that the human reflex would be slower, so a timer would actually hit the stop button later.
Also, electronic times are really hand-held times. Somebody still needs to hit the start button. It doesn’t automatically go on. And it’s not like a timing device would instantaneously shut off once somebody crosses a line.
Thing is, there is no scientific way to precisely measure speed.

    ST
The human reflex is slower in starting the timer. However, at the finish line, timers anticipate the runners crossing the finish line. End result…the clock runs for a shorter time = faster time than electronic. Fully automated timing systems sometimes use a pressure strip as the starting line. When the hand lifts off the strip, the timer starts automatically. For those systems, there’s no reaction time lag to deal with. Other systems link the starting gun to the timer. When the gun goes off, the human system takes approx 0.15 sec to react which is why official electronic times at track meets are slower than hand timed.

  206. Garret June 23, 2009 11:17 pm

    ST,

I think that the hand-timed results are largely accurate, though they may be a little better than reality…kind of like how I’m never surprised when people measure an inch or two shorter than their listed height when they go to the NFL combine. This is regarding all players, not just the ones at UH. That is why I think that the performance on the field is the most important thing…a track star could “play slow” if he doesn’t make the reads quick enough while some players probably run faster during a game than they do while being timed.

If everyone is fudging their results a little, then the reported times gives a good measure to compare each player.

  207. Garret June 23, 2009 11:19 pm
