Green day

ag

After rushing for a school-record 327 yards in a 59-24 victory over New Mexico State, Alex Green today was named the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week.

* * * * *

In case you were wondering, the Warriors’ (co-)WAC championship rings and assistant coaches’ bonuses will come out of the payment UH will receive for playing in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl.

UH will net about $400,000 for participating in the bowl — $375,000 in guaranteed pay, $25,000 for a bonus for  selling tickets.

* * * * *

TCU is going to the Big East in all sports. Hmmm. If UH’s deal with the MWC is finalized, the MWC will have 10 football members in 2012. Should UH now seek to bring all of its sports to the MWC?

* * * * *

There would be a little more empathy for Boise State if head coach Chris Petersen didn’t say stuff like this:

“The only thing I think is we’re still going to a better league than we’re in right now. And that’s no disrespect to anybody.”

But it does sound disrespectful. Never got the feeling Boise State was representing the WAC during its BCS quest. Which is why it didn’t sound like many WAC members were rooting for them. For instance, Idaho has to feel snubbed because Boise doesn’t want to continue the series after 1012 and, if the teams meet, the Broncos don’t want to play in Moscow. But don’t feel too bad for the WAC teams. Each receives $150,000 as part of the don’t-sue-us payoff for non-AQ leagues that don’t play in BCS games.

    Hi, ST and Tsaikos!

    Congrats to Alex Green!

I am not sure about the wisdom of adding the rest of the UH sports to the MWC. Think of the savings when we play only in California.

Hope everything happens to benefit UH, ultimately.

  9. NYUH November 29, 2010 7:17 am

OK, Hawaii can move on now that they are WAC Champs. Still hope they can create a Pacific division so that everyone on the Left coast doesn’t have to travel to the mountains all the time.

Congratulations to Alex Green for his well-deserved honor! It is interesting that Nevada’s Rishard Matthews won 2 national offensive player of the week honors but did not win the WAC award. Green had tough competition because Matthews caught 10 passes for 172 yards, with the TD catch with 13 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Matthews also had a 44-yard rushing TD.

My old comment is awaiting moderation, so I’m going to put a space in the word that is causing the problem.

    NYUH,

Fresno State linebacker Travis Brown won the WAC Defensive Player of the Week and Louisiana Tech return specia list Phillip Livas won the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Brown had 5 tackles and intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD. His TD came when the score was just 6-0, so that was a crucial point in the game…and his team won by just 3 points.

Livas returned a punt for 88 yards and a TD, tying an NCAA record for career returns for a TD (8 TD returns). He had 3 punt returns for 103 yards and a kickoff return for 27 yards.

  26. CoolEthan November 29, 2010 7:52 am

Right on, Right on Mr. Green. Congrats.

You know, I was wondering if the WAC selection commitee was gonna select Vai Taua as Offense pow, just because, well, you know why.

But this is the trump of all trumps, in your face Nevada. Mr. Green gonna keep taking to the house next week, then 2 weeks after that too!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Congrats to Alex Green!

So, TCU to Big East in all sports? As a fan of a Big East bb team, 17 teams in bb? Really? I thought 16 was kinda unwieldy. Sheeesh.

ST – BC calling for your “man card” for going to Wal-Mart on Thanksgiving night. 😆

  32. Garret November 29, 2010 8:04 am

I wonder if the Big East would invite Central Florida to be a football-only member (they have already said they would accept that) and invite a Texas school (Houston or SMU) to be a travel partner for TCU? That would give the Big East 12 football schools and 18 basketball schools. That actually would make sense to me…

The first 2010 All-America team has been released. The American Football Coaches Association has selected All-America teams since 1945…no WAC players made their first team (they only pick a first team apparently) but 2 MWC and 1 C-USA player did.

    http://www.afca.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9300&ATCLID=205038263

  38. Garret November 29, 2010 8:17 am

Why do the D-IA coaches vote for an All-America team before the regular season is even over?

  39. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 8:18 am

How much of us going to the MWC depends on them finding 2 additional schools to make 12?

Doesn’t a 9 team conference sound better than a 10 team scheduling wise?

Should we try and force MWC’s hand and have them come out with the invite now with the departure of TCU?…MWC fans might be brewing for quick and decisive response to them leaving. If anything the Hawaii press conference would have made more sense this evening.

With Nevada, Boise, in top 25, AF, sdsu getting decent top 35 rankings I am afraid that MWC might want to just consider staying at 9 and building that foundation first if they can’t find 2 viable teams to make 12 with Hawaii….

  40. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 8:29 am

Hindsight is 20/20 but instead of having the pressure put on MWC to get their junk together, the pressure is on Hawaii to deliver what was kinda promised.

I guess no one could know for sure that TCU would leave but the writing was on the wall.

Had we announced our discussions with MWC tonight (after TCU announcement) we could “negotiate” a very tempting deal with the WAC, have Benson announce that deal and put MWC schools in a position to make sure they do not lose Hawaii.

oh wells whos to say that would have been the case either.

  41. Shoko November 29, 2010 8:31 am

I usually clear my cookies after I toss them for awhile. Only question is how do I do it on my computer. I have a bad memory with passwords and fear I might lose them. 🙂

  43. Old Diver November 29, 2010 8:34 am

  46. Last Call November 29, 2010 8:40 am

I’m betting Thompson already had a plan in anticipation of TCU leaving. Love him or hate him this guy is no Karl Benson.

  47. Pomai November 29, 2010 8:42 am

Garret when we do get the invite to the MWC for football only could there be some kind of clause that says that after the last two years in the WAC we could revisit the idea of being a full member. Just thinking of we have top 20 teams in other sports would that be enough to get us a full membership?

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 8:43 am

With TCU gone, how does that affect the probability of the MWC gaining AQ status?

I’ve read it diminishes the chances quite a bit, especially for the 2012 evaluations.

    Nevada

    Boise

    Fresno

    Hawaii

    AF

    SDSU

    UNLV

    SMU

    Tulsa

I mean only a “wishful” thought but doesn’t this combination of teams seem reasonable and gives a better chance for AQ status at some point seeing how well most of these schools are doing.

    or

    Boise

    Nevada

    Fresno

    Hawaii

    SDSU

    UNLV

    BYU

    Utah St.

At 8 teams doesn’t the BCS give that 15% bonus points for AQ status or something?

I mean not that BYU would consider this over going independent but what if ESPN was in the mix and the conference decided that BYU would get a bigger piece of the TV pie plus they could sell their own rights like we do with k5.

    grrrrrrr.

  49. Pomai November 29, 2010 8:43 am

A very happy good morning, Tsaikos and Tsaikettes, Lurkers and Lurkettes!!!

After having been thot and predicted to finish somewhere not at the top of the WAC conference, sure feels good to see our Warrior Team rise above and brainstorm how to unselfishly utilize their existing talents in order to get the job done.

Thrilled and happy to see recognition in the polls but what makes me happiest is seeing their increased confidence in knowing to keep trying no matter what anyone is saying or has said.

Thank you UH admin, coaches, trainers, and players for your terrific team effort and for producing a more than positive and exciting football season!! Please keep up the improvements and keep going in this same direction, I am sure enjoying seeing the results of your hard work and extensive planning!!

  52. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 8:58 am

how many of you think its WACky to see that WAC commercial with all the coaches talking about the WAC’s ‘play-up’ and thinks it should be ‘play-up while it lasts’ instead? lol

  53. Kazz via DROID.X November 29, 2010 9:00 am

Well, this should expedite our negotiations with the MWC.

The heart says we should negotiate a full membership with but MWC, but the mind and the checkbook prefer the Big West.

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 9:04 am

Maybe Garret could answer this but is there any way in hell that CSUF, UNR, Hawaii can get into MWC for 2011?

If TCU is taking all of its “data” with them to BE for the AQ evaluations then MWC is in no way getting AQ in 2012.

BUT, if we get in for 2011 we can use Nevada and Hawaii for this year and next correct?

  55. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 9:07 am

    Kazz,

The mind should say we need to find a way for Hawaii UNR, CSUF to all leave the MWC effective next year.

If its for the sake of AQ status then the old saying about a bird in hand is worth….

No one can speculate how good UNR, CSUF, HI is going to be for the 2012-2015 AQ eval period….But we do know how good they are now, today, this year.

I’m with the other bloggers who feel BW-other sports, and MWC for footbal only.

Wouldn’t it be a laugh if the MWC will move to parlay a deal for UH in all sports with NO travel subsidies???

  64. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 9:22 am

    labrat,

yep although the bottom dwellers of the MWC are far superior to the ones in the WAC in both competitiveness and tv market.

    Conference XYZ:

    Boise

    Fresno

    Hawaii

    SDSU

    UNLV

    BYU

    NMSU

    UNM

    UWy

    CSU

    AF

    UTSA

    TSU

(If LaTech leaves that makes 9)

    Why isn’t this workable?

    AF

    CSU

Anyone know “who’s up” for presenting at Na Koa?

  83. Garret November 29, 2010 9:39 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

The MWC is *not* going to kick out any of their current members. That has been brought up over the years when they have been striving for AQ status and they have clearly said NO to it. UH isn’t even a member yet and you wish to kick out some of the schools that have to vote to let UH join the MWC?

  84. Garret November 29, 2010 9:44 am

Before I see this posted too many times (the media even gets it wrong, such as in that fanhouse article), TCU will count for the *MWC* in the 2008-2011 BCS evaluation period. TCU will be a MWC member until June 30, 2012. The conference that a school is in on December 4, 2011 will determine which conference they count for the 2008-2011 BCS evaluation period.

Utah and BYU are not playing in the MWC in 2011 so they won’t count for them.

BSU *is* playing in the MWC in 2011 so they will count for them.

TCU *is* playing in the MWC in 2011 so they will count for them.

UH/Nevada/Fresno are playing in the WAC in 2011 so they will count for the WAC.

  85. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 9:44 am

    Garret,

Never said anything about anyone kicking any team out of any conference.

Just as MWC formed from the old WAC what is to stop BSU, CSUF, HI, Utah St. and UNLV to go into some airport lounge and discuss a new conference made up of those additional MWC members?

What’s to stop what already had been done in the past? The difficulty of finding a new name for a conference?

  86. Bulla November 29, 2010 9:46 am

    GO WARRIORS

  87. Garret November 29, 2010 9:48 am

From the BCS’s website, the Big East doesn’t have to worry about this evaluation period. The Big East was NOT worried about losing AQ status (they were the #2 conference in the BCS standings last year and have been above the Pac-10 every year for the past 3 years so one bad year means nothing), but they *are* looking to get more money from ESPN from their current TV negotiations.

Under the terms of the agreements with the bowls and television rightsholder, the ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC will have annual automatic qualification for their champions for the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

  90. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 9:52 am

    Garret,

Is the Fanhouse article wrongly quoting the data moving with Big East or is the Executive Director of the BCS Bill Hancock wrong?

  91. Garret November 29, 2010 9:54 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

The NCAA has set new requirements that makes it *much* more difficult to create a conference from scratch. The MWC has a lot of NCAA basketball credits also. The new conference won’t get the millions guaranteed that the MWC gets no matter if they have a team in a BCS game or not.

The WAC tried to get UNLV and they were rejected–look at the e-mails released between Nevada, Utah State, and Karl Benson that discussed that well before Nevada was invited to the MWC. *None* of the MWC teams are going to leave to join with WAC teams.

You are talking about downgrading the conference for some current MWC members. The MWC has explicitly said that isn’t going to happen. Do you realize that Wyoming beat Fresno State in a bowl game less than a year ago? Or how much money New Mexico brings to the MWC via basketball? Or how Air Force BLOWS AWAY *UH* in this BCS evaluation period?

I hate to be so negative, but suggesting that the MWC leave out some of their current members just isn’t going to happen.

  92. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 9:54 am

    #85, Garret,

Actually you are right. Its more beneficial for Hawaii to get into the MWC first THEN pull a Tojo on the MWC like the pre-MWC did on the WAC…

  93. Garret November 29, 2010 9:55 am

Is the Fanhouse article wrongly quoting the data moving with Big East or is the Executive Director of the BCS Bill Hancock wrong?

None of them are wrong. *You* are wrong when you say that TCU’s numbers will count for the Big East in this 2008-2011 evaluation period. Yes, TCU will count for the Big East in the 2010-2013 evaluation period, but TCU will count for the MWC in the 2008-2011 evaluation period.

  94. Pomai November 29, 2010 9:55 am

I see the MWC as a 12 team confrence with an east/westdivision See what it would look like.

    http://nawahine.smugmug.com/Misc/General/new-MWC/1108888308_mWAyh-L.jpg

  95. Garret November 29, 2010 9:57 am

So, TCU could help the MWC earn AQ status for 2012 and then leave…UH could join an AQ conference even though none of UH’s numbers would have counted.

  96. Garret November 29, 2010 9:59 am

AQ status means NOTHING when a school has a chance to upgrade itself that significantly. Colorado left the Big 12 for the Pac-12. Nebraska left for the Big 10. Even with AQ status, the MWC would get a lot less TV money and a lot less NCAA basketball money.

In the end, TV viewers determine how much money a conference makes. There simply aren’t that many TV viewers watching the MWC and WAC combined, while the Big East is located in viewer-rich areas.

  97. Garret November 29, 2010 9:59 am

  99. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 10:05 am

    Garret,

That’s WAC vs. MWC arguments…Do you expect either side to NOT want to protect their membership? What did UNLV gain from joining the WAC? Nothing except the UNR thing.

The WAC trying to get UNLV is different from 4 schools + UNLV which obviously wants to be with Nevada and Hawaii (unless you think they joined the MWC to be with TCU)…looking to get 4 other MWC schools. I mean I’m definitely not an expert but small kine different.

If MWC isn’t getting the AQ status for 2012 (haven’t found a single source that points to them having a good shot at it) then what does it matter what Air Forces AQ eval looks like compared to Hawaii for 2012. It means nothing. I think schools are poised to shoot for the next round.

I will however agree with the basketball thing with the MWC losing that money.

Also if you want to keep in NM for their bowl that could work if you were to add to make 12 or take Utah st. out.

Btw what new requirements make it MUCH more difficult to create a conference from scratch?

  100. (Jesse)James November 29, 2010 10:11 am

  101. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 10:11 am

Garret your right about the MWC gaining that AQ status. How is it that they can count for 2 conferences? Thats wierd.

“Here is where things get bizarre. T.C.U.’s 2010 regular season will also go toward the Mountain West’s bid toward gaining automatic qualification status for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, which will be evaluated in December 2011. The Mountain West has a great chance to receive a bid for those two seasons, as Boise State, which the league recently added, will also count in that cycle for its performances back to 2008.

The cycles overlap because the conferences created a new evaluation period to coincide with the television contract. To do that, they overlap for two years, according to the B.C.S. executive director, Bill Hancock. That is why T.C.U.’s seasons will count for both leagues. ”

ooops this was supposed to be the first paragraph of #102

“T.C.U.’s scintillating 2010 regular season, which has it ranked No. 3 in the B.C.S. standings and just on the outside of a national title bid, will count for the Big East toward automatic qualification in the next cycle. The Big East is locked into the B.C.S. through the 2013 season, as it is included in the television and bowl contracts. The automatic qualification criteria for the B.C.S. after 2014 have not been determined. If the Big East were subject to a review of its part performance, T.C.U.’s 2010 season would count for the Big East in that review. (That would help offset a poor year for the Big East on the field in 2010.)”

  104. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 29, 2010 10:14 am

    Nevermind here it is together…

For an old retired guy, Koakane still has tons of stamina and endurance. He and Rob25 started at Imua Lounge at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday morning and went until 12:00 midnight. That’s right, fourteen straight hours, without a break.

I vote Rob25 and Koakane for WAC FOTW award.

Yesterday #264 IWWTHM & #284 Protector- As per the TV-gate announcement, Saturday at Imua was a breakfast-style buffet. The meal consisted of eggs, rice, spam, Portugueae sausage, and they added the fresh fruits for good measure lol.

They initially served premade individual plates since we weren’t sure of the exact count (we didn’t do a pre-pay) and to keep the fuud fresh. To order more, you would just ask. = )

  117. RupertDaStupert November 29, 2010 11:42 am

Last weekend, Mo surpassed the most passing yardage in a game. This weekend, Alex Green, surpassed the most rushing yardage in a game. And Greg Salas broke Jason Rivers reception for yardage. And Mr. Enos eclipsed the great Jason Elam’s point after touchdown mark. What more could one ask for? Remarkable! I hope Greg McMacken is asking JD to give Nick Rolovich and Dave Aranda pay raises and contract extensions. If the pros won’t give them a chance, some high faluting BCS college will want try to lure them away. He’s quickly replacing Norm Chow as a urban legend as offensive coordinator.

  119. tommui November 29, 2010 12:06 pm

Without degrading or taking away Mr. Enos’ successful attempts at point after TDs, one has to remember the pass-oriented offense we use today differs from the run, run, and sometimes pass offense we used when Jason Elam was with us.

  120. James:

With respect to the December 18 party and without bachi-ing a particular team, would it be possible to move the start time from 5:30 pm to 3:30 pm since a certain sporting championship will be played at 8:30 pm Eastern Standard Time?

Only two O`ahu-based home UH games over the next three weeks and two days- December 4 at Aloha Stadium (football) and December 11 at The Stan (men’s basketball).

However, we will have at least 5 – hopefully six – away games/matches over the next five days in addition to the UNLV football game so things won’t be too boring.

Anyone here going to the NA KOA annual football dinner this Sunday? Do we want to have a table or two set up for us? Stretch – are you willing to organize something? Who else is a NA KOA member?

OFF-SPORTS TOPIC: We’ve re-set the new date for yesterdaya’s canceled GREEN GIFTING PRE-SALE – $5 each. Next Sunday, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Will bring information to Saturday’s T-Gate as well. Click my name above for more information about what it’s all about.

Off to work – lots of quasi-semi-hemi-demi-sorta political stuff to do.

  121. tommui November 29, 2010 12:09 pm

GARRET: While TCU’s move to the Big East means a move to a bigger TV market, is there any statistics showing how many people actually tune into the Big East football games?

  122. Pomai November 29, 2010 12:23 pm

#95 – OldDiver – Not sure, I know there is all this talk of them leaving but they haven’t yet I don’t think. If they do then it wouldn’t be to hard to find two more schools to invite. I think MWC could keep BYU if they worked out a deal on the TV rights, because them remaining in the conference would be good for both the school and conference.

  123. Pomai November 29, 2010 12:31 pm

I guess I was wrong they both have made their moves to going independent and to the pac 10.

  124. Not an Expert November 29, 2010 12:33 pm

Is the AQ qualifying formula like a 3 or 4 year rolling average? That may make it a lot clearer of AQ points being credited to the conference when one team leaves one conference for another and have them count for both conferences as explained by Iwonderwhytheyhateme.

    Example:

TCU goes to Big East in 2012. Their 2012 will count for the Big East going forward, the prior years 2011, 2010, 2009, counting for MWC credits. Thus TCU counts for 2008-2011 for the MWC. TCU will count for Big East for 2009-2012. Is this how it works? It seems a little confusing from what is being discussed by Garret and Iwonderwhytheyhateme.

By the way I am wondering why others may hate you Iwonderwhytheyhateme? Just kidding.

Off the subjiect but please forgive me. Prez Obama froze federal civilian workers wages for 2 years. I worked as a civilian in the Fed Govt for 33 years. My retirement was 800.00 a month. It made me homeless. What he did was guarantees more Fed civilian workers will become homeless. Freeze the wages of those who make $80,000 a year, not the lower tier Fed civ workers who earn chicken feed. People have a mistaken notion that civ Fed workers make good money. Not so. He’s a smooth talker, but he’s not addressing the problem where it’s at. Yes he’s an Island son, but it’s a death sentence to become homeless. You can’t put a price on dying. Island son or not, I’m voting for a Prez next election who doesn’t hit people below the belt when their already struggling. I’m sorry Mr. Tsai. My prayers go out to all the homeless, those suffering from terminal illness and non terminal illness, our soldiers defending our country, and to keep my statements within sports, hope Colt Brennan gets well and Shakti and the lady hit by their car. May the good Lord look down and take care of them. On an endiing note, my respect for Brett Favre went up 100% when he ran the yards near the end of the game on a broken ankle. In a brutal contact sports such as this, no one, on one, plays with a broken ankle. He’s a MAN!!!!!!!

All freezing, layoffs, and furloughs, are bad for the lower tier wage earner. But the Prez, the Governors of each state, the mayors, don’t want to freeze, or furlough, or layoff the big good ol boy/girls who are making six figures a year. Their cutting their throats, because these richer people will cut their re-election donations, their powerful influence to support the candidate, their power base. The little man pays the price. Our U.S. postal service it laying off 51 workers here. Some may keep their jobs but have to transfer to stateside. But I will vote for the candidate who is not afraid to take on the big boys/girls to take equal responsibility to do their part to sacrifice wages in this bad economic times. Look at what pro athletes make in all the major sports? A freeze in their wages would not hurt them one bit. What’s a $100,000 freeze when their already making millions a year?

  144. kev-1 November 29, 2010 1:15 pm

#118 – while I share in your enthusiasm regarding Aranda and Rolo, I think you have a very lofty opinion regarding their success. No, a BCS school will not chase down Rolovich nor Aranda. They are so new to coordinator status. And don’t forget what people across the country think of the run-n-shoot. And how does one year as OC throw Rolo ahead of Norm Chow as an OC legend? I think Rolo should/will be the HC of the University of Hawaii within the next 5-7 years. Hopefully Aranda will stick with the program. I could see people pursuing Aranda in the future, and I think his mind is on the mainland too.

guess Miur is an example of a “grey-shirt” who went off to SMU, checked out the school/sights and decided that UH was, in fact, da place to be.

Very astute statement about Rolovich. One year as OC does not a legend make. And I think your right, Aranda not once made a statement about “these islands are special, I love it here”. He has his sights on the mainland. Oh well, it all works out in the end. I was one of the pundits 3 years ago, “Brett Favre’s a has been, Brett Favre’s a prima donna, Brett Favre’s great but all those interceptions”, but playing and running on a broken leg, in the pros, I thing he’s a superstar for just doing that. In these days when pros won’t play from a sprained nagging injury, I have a whole new respect for him!!!

Obama was for extending the Bush tax cuts for all income under $250,000 for couples, which means even the rich would receive a tax cut. Obama never proposed a tax increase for the rich.

    Go Warriors.

  166. Garret November 29, 2010 1:56 pm

    Not An Expert:

The BCS starts a new evaluation period every 2 years. The current evaluation periods are 2008-2011 and 2010-2013.

2008-2011: TCU and BSU count for the MWC, which as the NY Times article correctly points out gives the MWC a great shot at becoming an AQ conference. That would give them AQ status for 2012 and 2013 (TCU won’t be there but UH, Nevada, Fresno, and the rest of the MWC will enjoy that money!).

2010-2013: TCU will count for the Big East. UH, Fresno, Nevada, BSU, and the rest of the teams left in the MWC will count for the MWC. To get/keep AQ status, they will need at least 2 teams in the top 25 at the end of each season (it would be great if BSU, UH, and Nevada did that this season) and they will need the highest ranked team each year to be well into the top 10. The MWC will need its highest ranked team in the top 6 or 7 on average to get/keep AQ status…unfortunately for this year it appears that none of the school will get it.

ESPN is paying $42.5 million more for TV rights to the BCS bowl games than Fox was paying–all that money is given as payout increases for BCS bowls. If TCU, BSU and the rest can earn AQ status for the MWC, UH’s share of the BCS payment would be *more* than UH would be getting from PPV in the future. Plus, recruiting would get a huge boost.

  167. NCAA November 29, 2010 1:58 pm

Anybody else think the State Championship football game was anti-climatic?

Anybody wanna through out some youtube links of potential recruits?

Anybody think the Wahine VB team will be playing for the NCAA championship on Dec. 18th?

Anybody think the attendance for this weeks game against UNLV will have a similar attendance as the SJSU game?

Anybody know why students don’t show up for a free game?

  168. al November 29, 2010 1:59 pm

tony did such a great job flushing out the talent from here, there, and everywhere that i was surprised when mack brought him back to the trenches. surely, we know that it was tony’s wish to return to the clipboards, but……..

and i hear that tony has been doing a great job coaching.

in the future, i can see many schools paying more money for a recruiting coordinator’s position. it would be worth getting someone sharp and on the money.

  171. Garret November 29, 2010 2:04 pm

GARRET: While TCU’s move to the Big East means a move to a bigger TV market, is there any statistics showing how many people actually tune into the Big East football games?

    Tom Mui,

TV networks do *not* work as charities so I’m sure that ESPN knows exactly what ratings conferences get and what that is worth to them.

ESPN gives the WAC $4.5 million per year for the rights to all sports

ESPN gives the Big East $13.3 million per year for their football rights

ESPN gives the Big East $23 million per year for their basketball rights

CBS gives the Big East $9 million per year for their part of their basketball rights.

ESPN has been renegotiating its TV contract with the Big East and there is a possibility that the Big East will get between $10 million and $15 million per year for each (all sports) school for TV rights…that is far more than Pac-10 schools get for TV!

I could look up some of the raw data for TV ratings, but I think that it is safe to say that ESPN wouldn’t be throwing so much money at the Big East if people weren’t watching their games.

Na Koa luncheon: green salad, pasta salad, tako poke, kalua pig ‘n cabbage, chicken long rice (yum!), turkey in herbed gravy, bread pudding & (some kinda) mousse cake. Someone said the rice was fluffy.

Coach Lumpkin came in place of Aranda & told us the stories he told the players about not taking games for granted and the ones they lost in-the-day. Gotta play your best no matter who the opponent is. We can not assume that we will beat UNLV. Gotta play lights out.

ST was at lunch. Practice tomorrow at 8 a.m.

Here’s the second paragraph. Let’s see if it goes through:

I strongly suggest that you contact the individual who represents you in the US House during this “lame duck session” while the Democrats are still in control. Come early January, things will get much worse because the Republicans want to cut wasteful government spending – and that means reducing the hundreds of thousands of people who make up the vast majority of the employees. The Big MuckaMuckas from every department & agency & office account for no more than 3% of the operational costs all totaled.

Capital-ist, my remarks are what I think and they may be wrong. You probably 100% smarter than I am. You have vast more knowledge. So my opinions on freezes, furloughs, layoffs, could be far off the mark. It’s easy to blame the Prez, the Gov, the Mayor, our Senators, our US House or Representatives. But I think there is much more to it than my brain power can handle. Prez Obama may actually be doing whats best for the people. I’ve been watching UH football since 1966, and I have no clue what it takes to win. I just pretended to know, “fire the coach, get a better qb, get a better running back” But you and the other regular bloggers are so much more intelligent than I am and I defer to all of you. Pretend or not, it’s our own opinions. The problem I see is when some cross the line and absolutely bash the student athlete. People have to realize that this is a college student who happens to play a sport for their university. It takes a lot of dedication and sacrifice to be the best you can be as a student and an athlete. No one is perfect in the classroom or on the field, court, pool, course, ocean, etc. They are allowed to make mistakes and to denigrate ones game or ability is just asinine and immature.

    Sorry, rant off.

  183. Pomai November 29, 2010 2:47 pm

Actually if Rolo was smart he would stay two more years at the most then go to another team that is not running the R&S. He will not be able to land an OC job anywhere but here with just knowing the R&S. Same with Aranda, he will move on in a few years, they both may have to take a step backwards to hook up with another top program. But they both need to learn a lot more.

    Let me add to that.

People want to talk about if a student-athlete isn’t good enough or whatever, then dump all over the coach. I don’t care how one says it, whether they make it personal or not, I do NOT believe in publically dumping on a student-athlete’s abilities or whatever.

Coaches get paid to do a job and that is to recruit and place his or her athletes in the best position to win. Leave the kids out of it. No gray area.

Lately I’ve been quiet with regards to this specific issue and I’d like to say more, but I won’t dignify specific comments as of late or responses alike.

In ANY case, the shirts are being printed as we speak. For SURE will be at the Stadium for sale on Saturday at the Rainbowtique tents, slim chance by Friday at Rainbowtique locations.

Intriguing that June Jones and SMU could end up playing Georgia in the Liberty Bowl if they win the CUSA Championship game this weekend. Also some room for SMU playing in Hawaii based on what the AD is saying.

Could SMU end up playing Georgia in the Liberty Bowl?

Posted at 4:05 PM on Mon., Nov. 29, 2010 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz

Kate Hairopoulos / Reporter Bio | E-mail | News tips

If SMU wins Saturday’s Conference USA title game, the Mustangs would likely play in Memphis’ Liberty Bowl, which has always hosted the C-USA champion. Reports are hinting that Georgia will be the SEC’s representative in the Dec. 31st bowl.

SMU coach June Jones faced Georgia in his last game with Hawaii – New Year’s Day, 2008 – before leaving for Dallas. The Bulldogs trounced Hawaii, 41-10, in the BCS’ Sugar Bowl after the Warriors went undefeated during the regular season.

Still, nothing will be official until this weekend. If SMU ends up losing at Central Florida, several options appear to be on the table, from the Armed Forces Bowl (at SMU’s Ford Stadium this season) to the Hawaii Bowl to the New Orleans Bowl, etc…

While SMU played on Oahu last season, Hawaii wasn’t bowl eligible. This season, Hawaii is already set as one of the teams, and the folks at ESPN may like the idea of Jones returning to Hawaii to face his former team.

    .

“We’ve had teleconferences with all the ADs, and right now it’s still up in the air depending on Saturday’s game,” SMU athletic director Steve Orsini said. “Nothing will be official. Our young people have shared with us what they prefer to do. We have coach Jones’ preference… We weigh all those things.”

    Trivia:

TCU’s mascot, the Horned Frogs = Horny Toads in AZ

They are really Horned Lizards. We used to catch them in the yard. Fed them ants, their prefered food. They can squirt blood from their eyes when threatened. According to AZ law, you can’t keep them captive since they were?are a protected species.

Wonder when we’ll know if we really ARE replacing TCU in the MWC?

  230. Kazz November 29, 2010 5:34 pm

But black will be nice for Saturday because in a way, it is kind of is a funeral.

It’s the last regular season game and we’re killing two things:

    1) The belief that we were only worthy of a bottom place finish in the WAC.

    2) UNLV

Good marketing to sell them at the stadium to get people to the game. An added bonus for attendance. Tickets for Saturday’s game in the end zone (red & yellow) are 50% off online at the UH site.

  233. Not an Expert November 29, 2010 6:08 pm

The MWC & WAC will forever have a difficult time becoming a BCS conference. They could right now if all the schools invited to the MWC and BYU, Utah and TCU remained. How can they not qualify as a BCS.

The pecking order WAC to the MWC to a BCS conference.

Look at what has happened with the fueding of the MWC and WAC. They both have taken a step backwards, more so the WAC.

Apparently the schools know that even if the MWC or WAC became a BCS conference the money made from television will not be more and maybe far less than than what the current BCS conferences get. That being the case the schools are working using the conferences like the MWC and WAC as a stepping stone to hopefully get an invite from the established BCS conferences.

I believe UH needs a long range plan to get that invite from the PAC-12. Don’t let Boise be the school next in line.

That plan should start with, if not at least, the support from UH fans.

  235. madeinhawaii November 29, 2010 6:24 pm

    Not an Expert…

At least if they become an AQ conference, they will be guaranteed 4 million shared.. and the conference winner another 4 million. That would be a HUGE incentive to win the conference and since Hawaii knows the scent of that blood.. they (the powers that be) may be more inclined to make it happen with better recruiting.. more PR… facility upgrades.. etc. If, say, Boise and Hawaii alternate as Conference winners every other year… they would increase their revenue, on top of what the conference TV rights pay out, an average of 2.5 million a year!

Did I mention that for tomorrow’s prize, we’re giving away an Alex Green-autographed copy of the play-by-play stat book

An exhibition (Football or Basketball) or league game in Japan, or Australia/New Zealand would be a nice introduction in those markets.

  238. Lurker 1 November 29, 2010 6:39 pm

I’m not sure the Pac 12 will invite Boise State. All of the Pac-12 schools are big, prestigious research schools, offering PhD’s in a multitude of areas. Boise State offers PhD’s in 3 areas: Geophysics, Geosciences & Electrical/Computational Engineering. (For comparison, UH offers PhD’s/ JD /MD/etc. in 61 areas.)

And the Pac-10 Schools can be just a wee bit snobby! 🙂 I did my time at USC; husband was at UW.

  241. Garret November 29, 2010 6:51 pm

At least if they become an AQ conference, they will be guaranteed 4 million shared.. and the conference winner another 4 million.

    madeinhawaii,

With the increased TV money from ESPN, each AQ conference is guaranteed *$23 million* shared, not just $4 million. It actually might be $24 million or $25 million guaranteed.

Remember, the 5 non-AQ conferences split the money like they are one huge AQ conference.

    * Some of that money is given to each conference based on how well they did in nonconference games.

    * Some of that money is earned when a non-AQ school makes a BCS game…but 1/3 of what that school earns goes to the other 4 non-AQ conferences.

When UH went to the Sugar Bowl, the Sun Belt, MAC, C-USA, and MWC each got a share of the money UH earned. The guaranteed money was split based on nonconference records (MWC got the biggest share).

So, non-AQ conferences split things 5 ways, AQ conferences get a full share.

If the MWC conference was an AQ conference with UH in it, none of the posters here would complain about a 3-loss UH team going to a BCS bowl game because it won the conference title…

  243. Garret November 29, 2010 6:53 pm

    Michigan Warrior,

A full season for a show like H:50 is 22 episodes. 22 episodes for 52 weeks…get used to a lot of reruns.

  244. Garret November 29, 2010 6:55 pm

By the way, I made a big decision for work today and I’m going to be in Torrance 3 days a week for quite some time. I can pick which days I’ll be in Torrance…hopefully we can have a Calf Call at Kings sometime because I drive right past it to get to where I have to go for work.

  245. madeinhawaii November 29, 2010 6:58 pm

    Garret…

More reason to rejoice if the MWC becomes an AQ conference even without all that TV money that the other BCS conferences make, eh? It would still be a far cry from what we get out of the WAC when we win the conference.

I suppose, though, that means the MWC would not be able to have a ‘shared’ conference winner.

  248. Garret November 29, 2010 7:05 pm

Pretty funny–the Bowl game that Nevada wanted was the Kraft Bowl since San Francisco is such an easy commute for their fans.

If Nevada lost to BSU, BSU would be in a BCS bowl and Nevada would be in the Kraft Bowl. Nevada would have had the bowl it wanted and $625k from BSU’s BCS money.

By beating BSU, Nevada not only lost their $625k, but BSU is getting the Kraft Bowl. So, Nevada will play in Boise in the Humanitarian Bowl. So, by winning the game, Nevada “wins” the right to play in Boise against a MAC school instead of in San Francisco against a Big East school.

  249. Garret November 29, 2010 7:06 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Every BCS AQ conference has a tiebreaker to determine their champion to help decide which team goes to the BCS game or conference title game.

  250. Stephen Tsai November 29, 2010 7:06 pm

Several years ago, an audit was going to show that UH was losing a lot of money.

So, the auditor was hired as an assistant AD.

She was in her 20s. Never worked in athletics.

Seems that the AQ conferences are following that tactic. Utah threatens a lawsuit, suddenly it gets invited to the Pac-10.

Big East is in jeopardy of losing its AQ. It brings in TCU.

Better be careful for what it wishes. Think it’s going to be strange TCU playing in baseball in the Big East? Think TCU is going to be good for long? Hey, remember when it was the subject of Dan Jenkins books?

So, schools should just bow down because of bowl money. According to that logic, Nevada should throw the LA Tech game so that there is another WAC team that is bowl eligible. Guess Utah State threw the game against NMSU in last years WAC tournament, just so that there are two WAC teams in the NCAA tournament.

  269. Not an Expert November 29, 2010 8:32 pm

I have been stating the conspiracy behind keeping the MWC and WAC from becoming an AQ conference. Does anyone believe in a conspiracy? A no brainer if Boise, TCU, Utah, BYU, Fresno, Nevada, UH, were in the MWC with the rest of the teams there now. Can’t figure how all these educated people at these schools look at only getting themselves to an AQ conference instead of working together and achieving that goal together?

Are the commissioners part of the conspiracy?

I’m guessing money and power in the works here like all capitalistic ventures.

Garret thank you for your explanation on AQ qualifications.

  270. Old Diver November 29, 2010 8:33 pm

Calvin, could be wrong but I believe UH normally takes the makai side. From past experience I also believe the entire makai blue section is sold out to corporate sponsors. I have bought seats in the yellow makai section before.

Maybe the MWC schools should vote to invite BYU’s non-football sports back into the MWC.. that would balance out Hawaii’s football-only status. … Furthermore, maybe that suggestion should come from Hawaii.

This would be a gesture of good faith.. and getting BYU back into the MWC for their non-football sports might mean getting them back when TV contracts are re-negotiated.

  295. robo01 November 30, 2010 3:01 am

Coach Mac has been brilliant in allowing Rolovich & Aranda to manage their squads independently this year. I like the way that Nick is evolving the Run & Shoot to soon be his own version of it and Dave is making a name for himself as a high quality defensive coordinator. Not sure if Mac has chosen to stay away from micromanaging these guys but if that is the difference this year, it sure has paid off.

I said over two years ago that the WAC and MWC should merge to form a 18 team east/west conference with a championship game. Had they listened to me they would be an AQ conference already, without all the wasted money and time.

    Pomai,

The combined conference would actually NOT be an AQ conference–in fact, the combined conference would have been below C-USA for money also. Too many bottom feeders bring down the average, A 10-team (or 11-team) conference gets a 12.5% BCS point bonus, a 9-team (or 8-team) conference gets a 25% BCS point bonus, and a 12-team or bigger conference gets no bonus.

So many schools at the bottom of the MWC and WAC add nothing to their TV contract value that all schools would take less in such a big conference–it isn’t like they could get double what the MWC or WAC gets now. So, if the conferences merged then schools like BYU would have left even earlier…the top schools would leave and all the bottom feeders with no TV value would be left behind with UH.

  300. mctruck November 30, 2010 5:16 am

The Ruston paper has an article that speculates that La Tech might get an invitation to C-USA soon.

There’s the possibility of the University of Central Florida also exiting C-USA and heading to the Big East.

Add, too, that Houston, Texas-El Paso and SMU might leave C-USA and join the Mountain West. Should two vacancies occur for C-USA, look for Tech and North Texas being two of the leading candidates.

Tech has been in the Western Athletic Conference since 2001 but that league has been undergoing more changes lately than the plastic surgery updates on Heidi Montag.

the revolving greyshirt door is ever changing.

    greyshirt em or lose em?

    greyshirt em then redshirt em?

no grey em bring em in da fall?

    what to do?

see what i mean. of course it is all predicated by one factor…get grades?

al…you are so right. But a Grey Shirt is someone who has a commitment letter with lots of attachments. It is NOT a letter of intent. That is a HUGE difference. Since there are only several waivers allowed for students who have poor grades and low SAT scores….most Grey Shirts are due to grades and not being able to get into UH through the Front Door like regular students. You do know UH has some of the highest standards for admission in America? Grey shirts mean nothing really. The school can say…we want to grey shirt you for one semester BUT you have to meet MANY MANY requirements to get that scholarship. And many kids if they do not have the finances…and of course some are lazy and do not want to study to get up to the college level math and english. That is how we lose good players who end up never playing again!

If folks in Hawaii were really concerned…I would be writing to the DOE and ask…why are the Hawaii public school kids…not ready for college math and english? That is why so many kids are Grey Shirted at UH from Hawaii. The low test scores and over inflated public school grades prevent them from even attending UH. Help Hawaii children and DEMAND for answers from the DOE to why are these kids not eligible for admission to UH???? Call, write and call again to your DOE members. Has anyone been reading the paper about the low scores of the public schools? How can they play when they can not even do math and english or read?

Also, UH has to have a good GRA…if not they lose scholarships. So get calling and demand for these talented kids to get good grades. But a good recruiter would be on top of that matter…starting from Sophmore year. So take a look at the way Hawaii recruits. And demand excellence from them!

    Sorry nuff said!

  334. new balance shoes for women December 9, 2010 3:11 am

For you they might not be bad- but for a 10 years old… These shoes would be like a death sentence. If you look around at the kids section what do you see? Glitter, lights, bright colors- the works. The shoes you got have none of that. But if she wears a woman’s size shoe… You are not going to find any shoes she likes. She will not wear the shoes you got and I don’t think you should make her. In the future I would go together to the store so you can learn what kinds she does like. Go to a store and tell her to show you all of the ones she would wear. You will get a feel for her style. I would suggest going to a DSW Shoe Wear-house because they have so many shoes. She would be bound to find something she could wear. Good Luck! That’s a hard situation (but remember how hard it must be for her too).

I don’t think I agree with all of them, although I must admit that some of them are pretty good ideas that I never would have thought of, such as running one on yourself to see what is on your record. Has anyone actually had a background check done on yourself? I am very curious to be honest. That article was:

Other than employment or tenant screening, I seriously could not think of one good reason why someone would ever want to perform a background check. But, there’s some good reasons on the list below that I never would have considered. I think you’ll agree that some of them seem quite far fetched, or better yet, only for the paranoid, but I still found it interesting.

I’ve to say that I agree using the sentiments about getting AOL as selection a single. The comments posted along side it sum it up properly, that it does absolutely nothing to strengthen the brand, but only adds confusion.Out of the top rebrands in the l ist, I’d put SyFy in the top. In the beginning I hated the name, since I thought they did it ??just because,??? when in truth they had to alter their title as a result of getting unable to legally use Sci-fi.??? Now somewhat than coming up with a entire new name that nobody would know- and maybe lose a great deal on the already inbuilt SciFi??? brand- they caught using the outdated identify using a bit of phrase play. I can even now call SyFy Sci-fi when it arrives up, and that tends to make me happy.
