Gray matters

Defensive back Joey Iosefa, running back Jon Lister and defensive lineman Marcus Malepeai are grayshirts who are enrolled at UH-Manoa as part-time students this semester. They join the Warriors in January.

Jordan Loeffler, an offensive lineman, is a part-time student at UH-Hilo. He also will come aboard in January.

Defensive end Veni Manu is enrolled at a school on Oβ€˜ahu. He should be joining the team in January.

But T.J. Alofipo will need to attend a junior college.

Too bad about T.J. But I’m excited to see how these gray shirts pan out come January. Hopefully they’ve been working out and building muscles.

Happy Aloha Friday, Tsaikos. Talk about “ALOHA,” your tweet, ST, almost made me fall off my chair laughing. Couldn’t agree more about the DMV line where the aloha spirit dies. πŸ˜€

To answer DPK’s question on the last post: Moanalua-ʻAiea is the first game at Aloha Stadium, they play at 4:30. Kahuku-Leilehua follows at 7:30. Both games are on OC16; the latter will be on 1420 AM as well.

    ST,

Spak you at softball tonight or tomorrow morning?

  40. Buffoman November 6, 2009 1:19 pm

What a way to start a page. That’s great news about some terrific additions to the team. Stock up on a BIG D-tackle, couple of fast rush D-ends, a few 6’4″ and plus sized, quick, aggressive o-line folks and we’re good to go next year!

Oh, BTW, I’m thinking it’ll be a battle royal on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll wind up on top (with referee Wally Tatsumi raising the winnah’s hand – Warriors!).

Let’s see if peeps old enough to know what I just said.

  41. Kazz November 6, 2009 1:20 pm

    Whitey,

My entry is UH creates a total of 5 defensive turnovers combined against Navy and Wisconsin.

  42. whitey November 6, 2009 1:21 pm

A House, can totally relate to what you stated. At rotc camp, volunteered to be the athletic director for our flight and first question from the squadron captain was, do you know what it entails and what is your experience. Gave him my answers, became the AD for 3 sports, softball, volleyball, and bb. Had guys from UH in my flight and told them our first priority is to win the vb, so stacked the team with UH students and 2 or 3 more taller players. Total of 20 teams in competition and we win the vb title. Like you said, Hawaiian pride and knowledge goes a long way.

  43. whitey November 6, 2009 1:23 pm

Whitey ~ During ROTC annual training, I placed the Hawaiian Reserve Officers against the group from Texas. Was supposed to be flag football, but usually ended up being *tackle* at the end.

Needless to say, the local boys always prevailed. For their reward, they got to stay up late and grind all-you-could-eat crab from the local Hawaiian club members.

  69. Ralph November 6, 2009 2:30 pm

did she get suspended by the school, she got a yellow card for arguing with the referee, not for tackling and punching #7 and 21, and a single yellow card does not suspend a player from future play. Two yellows equal a soft red, or a straight out red card leads to a one game suspension.

  70. Da Punchbowl Kid November 6, 2009 2:36 pm

Its hard to believe she stayed in after that hair pull. She looks like she could have a a great future in MMA if the soccer thing doesn’t work out. And the look in her eyes… yikes!

  74. d1ε³Ά November 6, 2009 3:13 pm

News story says she got yellow card for kicking the ball into an opponent’s face (while the opposing player was on the ground about 2 feet from the ball).

New Mexico announced that Lambert has been suspended indefinitely from all team practices, competition and conditioning activities/

  75. chawan_cut November 6, 2009 3:14 pm

he did go that route. bigger than the one you had yesterday but smaller than the cheer ones.

re: Elizabeth Lambert. If she has any eligibility left, I would like to see her transfer to Manoa.

Wahines could sure use a goon/enforcer on the squad !

Our girls get beat up; need one goon to pay back.

Remember – Natasha got injured by a bully – no one paid back.

But, I think our coach is “gentlemanly/soft ?”, and would not do that.

Fill in your own word for “soft”.

  84. Ralph November 6, 2009 5:06 pm

yup, she should transfer to Hawaii, we definitely need a center back or middle to enforce the defense. Except for the overt hair pull I’ve seen the rest of the physical play in club competition on the mainland and these aren’t always called, if it were whistled, only a foul, rarely a card.

what is virtual memory, how do i maintain it or increase it. slowing my computer to a crawl.

  100. Garret November 6, 2009 8:29 pm

Bess responded to a couple of mistakes he had in games by doing what he always does…put in extra work to make sure that he doesn’t make the mistakes again. I remember all the stories about how he worked with the JUGS machine for hours each day…so it is no surprise that he came in on his off day to practice catching punt after punt.

There’s no question Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess remains among the team’s most favored players — from the perspective of the fan base and the coaching staff — because of his work ethic, feistiness and overall production.

So, with that in mind, a couple of critical fumbles during the past two games isn’t likely to fuel much impatience around him. Yet Bess still knows it’s time to make sure he doesn’t have any games like the last two.

“I’m working my butt off this week to hold onto the ball,” Bess said. “It’s just a matter of me being more careful. I’ve got to be ball-conscious.”

During the past two weeks, Bess fumbled twice. (He actually fumbled a third time, but the Jets ran out of time to challenge the play before Miami got the next snap off.) As a result of the drops, the team’s leading receiver was back at the team’s facility a day after the win against the Jets to get it figured out.

“I came in for Victory Monday [normally designated as a day off] and just caught a ton of punts, just to get my confidence going again,” Bess said. “It never really brought me down, but it hurt me that I could have potentially lost us the game.”

Bess said he has never had issues with fumbles, and he doesn’t recall ever muffing a punt during his career.

  101. whitey November 6, 2009 9:14 pm

The Wahines played very well tonight and K5 seem to take a long delay between match 2 and 3.

  102. whitey November 6, 2009 9:15 pm

Height does matter when it comes to blocking and the Wahines with the additional height up front are truly intimidating.

  103. whitey November 6, 2009 9:16 pm

Now if the Warriors to their basics tomorrow night, victory is highly possible.

  104. whitey November 6, 2009 9:18 pm

Virtual memory is the process where when you are short of ram the computer uses your hard drive as ram. Since the hard drive is slower than ram your computer slows down. Remedy this by installing more ram in your computer.

    ralph,

As ST said, Derek Inouchi wasn’t at practice for me to ‘scold’ him about players not joining their teammates to sing the alma mater. I did let one of the players know personally that I saw him & a couple of his buddies heading for the tunnel while the alma mater was being played. I hope they remember what they are supposed to do. Wonder if the coaches even tell these kids that they should stand & sing the alma mater after the game with the band & the cheer team? Do the Coaches join the team to sing or stand for the alma mater after the game? Leading by example…

Too much kope tonight. Wide awake…

    Who won the softball game?

Last year’s WVB team received gold Hawaiian bracelets tonight after the game for winning the WAC last year.

Who’s going to the San Jose State football game? My sister in SJ wants to hook up with you guys to sit with UH fans.

    are you diabetic?

a couple of weeks ago my mother makes this huge pot of shrimp curry.
now, i love curries. i did add half a bottle more to the huge pot just to kick it up a notch.

naturally i pig out on the curry. next morning the blood sugar is waaay low.

thinking nothing of it i have curry for lunch and finish up the pot w/newly added shrimp with the boy during dinner again.
next morning, again the blood sugar is waaaay lower.

coincedence you think? i google and found a few reports that confirm the medicinal qualities of tumeric the main curry spice.

yesterday, made those premade curry cakes into a lamb curry stew. same results. low blood sugar.

    go check it out.

  130. Kekoa November 7, 2009 1:36 am

Al ~ Would you believe Diana woke me up to tell me her blood sugar drop to 35! I made her eat a bowl of ice cream drizzled with homemade guava syrup on top and sprinkled with cookies. Waiting for the numbers to go up.

She wants to attend the t-gate party tomorrow. I have a premeasured shot of the good stuff if it ever comes to that. Remember in your gas chamber exercises at Ft. Ord? We showed you how to administer those atropine seret shots stowed in the mask case.

By switching the blue and red caps on the injection tube and pressing it into your thigh, it produced the desired result instantly. Same idea with the civilian version she was prescribed for emergency.

Tom Mui ~ Please come to the t-gate. Leave your car at the cabana, and ride up to the game with me and HoweLee.

We can exchange your ticket for a handicap seat on the mezzanine. I park by the main entrance near the picnic area. Then ride with us back to the cabana after the game for the after action report, coffee, and comfort foods.

A GREAT good morning Tsaiko Nation ! Got my white polo Hawaii shirt ON with my GREEN floral Reebok Aloha shorts as it is TIME to get FIRED UP and see our Warriors to VICTORY !

I know you good folks are READY and Aloha Stadium will be Rocking and Rolling as the “Rainbow Menehune” will be in SPIRIT with each present football player to put this losing streak to an END !

Be there or be square and take no prisoners ! Beautiful morning here in Los Angeles as I get ready to DOMINATE the tennis courts and then off to Magics to except CHALLENGES from the young b-ballers who have been waiting for their chance to GET back at the “Rainbow Legend” as I thoroughly spank them last Monday with my 51 year old game as they have left messages on my cell stating “were waiting for you Legend, we want revenge” !

Pomai: Got your BEAUTIFUL GREEN Reyn Spooner XXL Hawaii Aloha shirt as I pick it up later today from Linda Uyeda who owns and operate “Styles Of Hawaii” which does ALL my aloha wear. I told her this shirt is for an AWESOME gentlemen who needs to state at all times he is of “GQ” status. When I mail off to you with the ceremony dvd if you may be so kind to share my 17 year gala event with fellow Tsaikos who MAY want to view it I will be so appreciative to your efforts. The hour and fifteen minute TRIBUTE is filled with so much ALOHA that I am so PROUD to send it to you as the “GATEKEEPER”. Once I have everything package I will let you know it is on it’s way to the address you gave me. You are the “VERY BEST” kind sir !

Kekoa: Your reebok green aloha golf shirt arrived Friday morning at the Hawaii address you gave me at 8:01am. I checked my delivery confirmation reciept. Wear it to the game tonight sir as I will be in the spirit of it as you feast the opu and cheer the Warriors on to VICTORY!

Garret: So happy the package came of shirts and sweets for you and your WONDERFUL family. The Hawaii shirts came by Athletic Director Jim Donovan who gave me a BIG box for my kids at the CENTER as many wore them to the ceremony as I put away for Faith and Mika to have their very own. Will talk to you later to get your words eye view on the game as I CONTINUE to spread the wealth of ALOHA with the compassion you kind folks gave me due to HONOR and RESPECT !

Have a WONDERFUL day Tsaiko Nation and “IMUA WARRIORS” !

    IMUA WARRIORS

Game day, let’s go boys, if you can’t get motivated…..just think how can they make Utah State +2 for this game over you AT HOME. If you remember the game last year in Utah, it’s payback time.

LET’S GO AND DO WHAT YOU KNOW TO DO……

    IMUA WARRIORS

  135. Garret November 7, 2009 5:31 am

Best of luck to Chad Owens–I’m glad that he’s getting a chance to play today. Too bad his first game comes in their last game of the season.

On the Alouettes’ practice roster since July 14, he was earning perhaps $1,000 per week before taxes – and probably less – while supporting a wife and three children. But dreams don’t die easily.

“A lot goes to staying mentally strong, knowing you’re not getting paid a lot,” Owens said. “Things cross your mind, but quitting was never one. I’m here because I love playing football. This is the career path I’ve chosen. And my pro career has been filled with ups and downs. It has been a roller-coaster ride.

“But this is the reason why I get up and come to work, regardless of the circumstances.”

Owens, a 5-foot-8, 180-pound wide receiver, gets a rare opportunity to play today (1 p.m., TSN, RDS, CJAD Radio-800), when Montreal completes its regular-season against the Toronto Argonauts at the Rogers Centre.

  136. Garret November 7, 2009 5:32 am

Here is the Maui News article on the game.

”We have to go 5-for-5,” said Warriors quarterback Bryant Moniz. ”Coming off a six-game losing streak, I know that pretty much sounds impossible. But everybody in that locker room believes in it, and as long as we believe we can do it, we’re going to do our best to do it.”

  137. Garret November 7, 2009 5:33 am

Here is the Logan newspaper’s article about the game.

β€œIt’s strictly a business trip for us,” Utah State head coach Gary Andersen said. β€œ… We’re not going to (do any sightseeing) or whatever. The kids can do that stuff on their own time when they take their families over there or whatever.

β€œWe’re going there to win a football game.”

The Aggies will return home right after the game.

β€œIt’s gonna be a business trip and we’re going with the mindset of just beating Hawaii and coming back with a win and getting ready for that next game against San Jose State,” USU defensive tackle Sean Enesi said. β€œIt’s all business.”

  138. Garret November 7, 2009 6:18 am

Utah State isn’t very deep and it is interesting that ST’s article noted that their top 3 players on defense were hurt in their last game and might miss today’s game.

The Aggies’ three best defenders β€” Igboeli (ankle), Brindley (hamstring) and Murphy (concussion) β€” were hurt last week and are considered to be questionable this week.

  139. Garret November 7, 2009 6:32 am

Utah State’s head coach points out that UH’s offense gives them an advantage in the WAC because teams are using more run-oriented offenses–they faced 3 straight run-oriented offenses before UH (La Tech, Fresno, Nevada). He does point out UH’s main weakness on offense so far.

β€œIn this conference Hawaii has a little bit of an advantage,” Andersen said. β€œThere is so much pounding of the run game in this league and all of the sudden they spread you out with five wideouts.

β€œWe are a spread team that runs the ball first; they throw the ball first. They are going to get their yards. Against Hawaii, you have to stop them in the red zone.”

I ran into Aaron Kia in the training room several days ago. We had a chat about his quotes from this weeks newspaper article.
It gets interesting when two football letterwinners have a discussion.
    We agreed that:
    1. You don’t step out onto the field with anything less than a 100% effort,
    2. You play with teammates that give the same 100 percent,
    3. Past and present hasn’t changed these percentages
