Graduation Day; Clay rewarded

Congrats to the Warriors participating in today’s graduation ceremony.

If you can’t see the pictures, well … that’s because after being stuck for 45 minutes between the Punahou and UH exits, I figured, ah, I’m going home.

But Na Koa Mike will post links to the photos.

Congrats again.

* * * * *

Every day I go to UH I’m amazed that the freeway on-ramp is right before the off-ramp.

* * * * *

Congrats to Charles Clay, whose scholarship has been extended for another year. Clay was awarded a scholarship for the 2013 spring semester. But he did well enough in the classroom and on the field to earn a scholarship for the coming academic year.

Clay, who was raised in Hilo, attended SMU for two years before transferring to UH. He initially was a receiver before moving to safety last year. Clay exited spring as one of the top three safeties.

    Other H-1 on-ramps just before off-ramps…

    – University D.H. bound onramp with offramp just across the street (University ave)

this one is the scariest without a 300 HP engine

    – D.H. bound Piikoi onramp merging with Punahou offramp

    – Ewa bound Lunalilo onramp merging with Vineyard off ramp

    – D.H. bound Punchbowl/Pali onramp merging with Kinau offramp

    – D.H. bound Liliha onramp merging with Pali Highway offramp (building the long merge lane helped)

The planners of H-1 Frwy may have thought that they did a great job, can’t remember the Admiral’s name, and always came up with the lack or limited funds to purchase sufficient property for H-1.

Who in the right mind would place an “0ff-ramp” in the same area as an”on-ramp”. Surely they could have better!!!!! would an “over – under” road help?

Perhaps, they had the wrong “population” info to conclude that it was ok to do what they did.

  44. wafan May 11, 2013 11:38 am

    Mr. A-House . . .

Read somewhere the original interstate had on before off ramps. There are a lot of interchanges that reflect that philosophy up here. But, they are trying to fix some of them with fly-overs.

  45. madeinhawaii May 11, 2013 11:40 am

The Mickey D’s grilled onion and cheese burger for a dollar is a good deal… I don’t know if you can make one like that for less than a dollar at home.

    343 AHOUSE.

I think you are referring to Admiral Alvery Wright. He was one of those that responsible for H3. He later was head of the State Dept. of Transportation

Fudge Matsuda was the one “credited” with the H1 on and off ramps. He later became UH president.

  53. Committed Road Warrior May 11, 2013 2:14 pm

I read somewhere a while back how the “clover-leaf” on- and off-ramp design was the norm for freeways built during a particular era (the ’60s or ’70s, I don’t recall). With that design, those driving on the freeway would see the on-ramps before the off-ramps, and both ramps would share the same condensed “merge” lane.

Meanwhile drivers merging ON to the freeway only have a few hundred feet to accelerate to freeway speed and merge into traffic, all while ensuring they don’t get swiped by folks entering the same merge lane to exit the freeway. Low and behold some folks (politicians, the insurance industry, I forget) came to the realization that that style was much more unsafe compared to flyover ramps and parallel on/off-ramps.

Doesn’t mean they’ve gone away…in fact there are so many of those kine ramps here in the D.C/Maryland/N. Virginia region it’s sickening.

  57. Paki Parker May 11, 2013 3:28 pm

CRW. Funny you say how bad the freeways are in the DC area. I was born there in the fifties and grew up in Falls Church (Sleepy Hollow). I always remember the clover leafs on the Beltway being wonderful and remember there being off ramps before on ramps. The only bad place was the infamous mixing bowl right before you got into DC. Of course we would never be on the road at “rush hour”, but after dinner I could get to L’Enfant Plaza in ten minutes. I could get to Tyson’s Corners in 15 minutes. Now I’ve heard it would take me that long just to get to the beltway.

  62. d1shima May 11, 2013 4:14 pm

    Willie,

    OK.

But what can be learned by watching a HS pre-season game from 4 years ago? SLS wasn’t running anything like NC’s offense and neither was Leilehua.

…and who get “tape” of that anyway?!?! 🙄

  63. WarriorNY May 11, 2013 4:21 pm

    AussieMum,

No problem. Alex did a great job from what I saw. I’m no expert but it seemed like he and Ryan Quigley are going to be in a battle for that roster spot. There were quite a few spectators in awe of Alex’s talent…

d1shima, you can see tendencies & can see foot speed & agility. Saints exposed this weakness, he could not get set & looked average. Just my opinion that in the time left he is not the savior.

What can you learn from 4 year old tape? Have you seen Zwahlen’s tapes from 4,3,2 years ago? Great feet, always able tosquare his shoulders & very accurate. In my opinion he is the future and can’t wait till he gets back from his mission!
