Going the distance

For this Father’s Day celebration, Tommy Heffernan will present himself with a gift that will unwrap over 37.5 miles.

“I’m ready,” Heffernan said of the June 18  Hilina‘i Walk. “I think I am.”

The walk-a-thon is intended to help defray the tuition costs for his daughter, Hilina‘i, who suffers from hyptonia, a low-muscle-tone condition that can affect motor nerves and muscle strength. She attends Variety School of Hawaii, which has programs helpful for children with delayed development.

Heffernan, who is the Warriors’ strength and conditioning coordinator, came up with the idea last year. He and his daughter often enjoy long walks in their Hauula neighborhood. The goal was to walk from Hauula to Variety’s Diamond Head campus. To reach the destination at a reasonable time, Heffernan decided to start his trek at 12:10 a.m. About 30 others joined him at the start of last year’s inaugural walk, with half lasting through the halfway point at Kaneohe District Park. Heffernan and a dozen others reached Diamond Head at about 3:30 p.m.

Heffernan said this year’s walk, which will be held the day before this Father’s Day, also will start a little after midnight.

Heffernan said the most difficult stretch is the 2,813 feet of Likelike Highway’s Wilson Tunnel.

The walking lane is so narrow that they their backs were literally against the wall. “We were scraping the wall as the cars were going by,” Heffernan said.

Heffernan said the school has been helpful.

“She’s been 180 (degrees) from last year,” Heffernan said. “Her speech is probably the most improved. She can communicate and get her thoughts and feelings out. She’s more confident. She’s doing a lot better.”

Pledges may be deposited in the Friends of Hilina‘i Heffernan account at American Savings Bank. For details, go to hilinaiswalk.blogspot.com.

It’s always a shame when an omission is a declaration of a season’s end. The UH baseball team had a nice run this year. It’s unfortunate it won’t go on.

BG, where there is a will, there is a way, I think.

JD could schedule one of the military academies for when we are already on the mainland for a different game, and then schedule a bye week after the academy game.

    Not impossible.

In my solitude at this computer, my mind races back to 18 March 66, Fort Benning, Gerogia as Officer Candidate Class 3-66 grauated on a bright, sunny day. Less than an hour later, I was checking into my airbone class.

Fast forward to 31 Dec 66 and I am faced with the fact that nearly all, 98%, of my classmates in the 1st and 2nd platoons were killed in Vietnam.

To you and all those who gave their lives to protect our freedom, our way of life, our security, and our Nation, I give you a humble thank you for your sacrifice. May your families reflect, with pride, on all your accomplishments.

Wanda & I would like to offer Petals & Beans on Ala Moana Blvd for a pit stop for their participants with free drinks.

  18. Satch May 30, 2011 10:04 am

How can you even think about the UH baseball team being selected for the regionals? That’s being local yokel…geezeus…they got smashed..I repeat…humiliated by Fresno in the two games they played in the WAC tournament and everybody is fantasizing that UH should have been selected or considered…even Trapasso is being delusional…not so bad if they made it a game in the two games played with Fresno in the WAC tournament but to get literally pummeled…that’s absurb….if they had been selected, once again, Hawaii would have been an embarrassment…just like the football team in the Hawaii Bowl….just like the Wahine volleyball team and, of course, the basketball team that were selected for a tournament which should have been called a tournament for losers……go ahead and call me or criticize me…just laying out the facts …and being realistic about the situation…..

  19. kawika49 May 30, 2011 10:12 am

Wow Satch, why don’t you just say what you feel? And your recommendations for improvement are?

    chopsueyboy,

The route for the Hilina’i walk won’t pass by your shop. (see ST’s description above) It goes from Hau’ula to Diamond Head. Maybe you could set up a tent on the route.

  25. kawika49 May 30, 2011 10:43 am

#23 we had a Homeless Veterans stand down here in Olaa, which ran concurrently with the games.

I think it’s a long drive from Hauula to Diamond Head.

And I’m pretty sure Diamond Head Plumbing doesn’t service Hauula. (Just saw one of their commercials about how if you can see Diamond Head …)

Last stayed in a cottage in Hauula in the 1960s.

Weird swimming in the ocean at night — seaweed and coral feel funny in the dark.

Wonder what Tressel’s future plans are?

  36. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 11:53 am

    #35,

    Enjoy being a multi-millionaire.

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 11:55 am

Honestly, I never thought that Tressel would be dismissed/forced to resign. I thought at most he would face further suspension and maybe a bigger fine. I think a lot of Buckeye fans aren’t too happy with this from the perspective of losing a man who is able to beat Michigan.

  38. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 11:57 am

I wonder why they think Urban Meyer would take a job where its arguably even more higher profile and stressful than Florida.

  39. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 11:58 am

Apparently Chris Peterson is having talks with Ohio State.

  40. madeinhawaii May 30, 2011 12:03 pm

    Gigi,

At night giant Moray eels (6 feet or longer) like to play. They will sometimes rub up against your skin and they feel slippery and slimy… Just don’t agravate them, though. Like pit bulls, once they bite, they never let go.

  41. Kazz on Droid_X May 30, 2011 12:07 pm

Tressel took the coward’s way out.

Now he’s gone will there still be pressure to punish the program?

    Probably not.

    COWARD. HUMAN WASTE. HYPOCRITE.

  42. d1shima May 30, 2011 12:08 pm

Well, it’s cooler in Columbus. Can wea sweatah! 😉

  43. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 12:09 pm

    #41,

Not that I have particular affinity for their program. If it were any other school, Hawaii included, I would expect the head coach to resign if it meant saving the program from further sanctions.

  44. madeinhawaii May 30, 2011 12:13 pm

Didn’t two telephone poles go down in the Waihole area this morning? It’s all contra-flow till at least 2pm… that means it’s even a longer drive from Hauula to Diamond Head today.

  45. d1shima May 30, 2011 12:19 pm

Those players gotta feel like idiots for deciding to come back

  46. d1shima May 30, 2011 12:20 pm

    Separate probe on Pryor now

COLUMBUS, Ohio — On the same day coach Jim Tressel resigned in the wake of an NCAA investigation, The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that the NCAA and Ohio State are looking into whether star quarterback Terrelle Pryor received cars and other extra benefits.

  47. d1shima May 30, 2011 12:22 pm

    Kazz,

Believe me, Tressel didn’t resign because he wanted to “save the program”.

  48. gigi-hawaii May 30, 2011 12:23 pm

    MIH,

eels??? now you’ve done it. I’ll NEVER swim at night again!!!

  50. Dennis Halloran May 30, 2011 12:27 pm

No one will want to follow Tressel, as the school will be docked scholarships and bowl games for years when it all comes out. And the Cornhuskers are the big bully now!

so, will Ohio State become another SMU and receive the death penalty?

  55. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2011 12:57 pm

It was only seven months ago …

Even if TCU and Boise State run the table, they still don’t deserve to be in the Bowl Championship Series title game, Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee said Wednesday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the president at the university with the largest athletic program in the country said that TCU and Boise State do not face a difficult enough schedule to play in the national championship game.

“Well, I don’t know enough about the X’s and O’s of college football,” said Gee, formerly the president at West Virginia, Colorado, Brown and Vanderbilt universities. “I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it’s like murderer’s row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.

“So I think until a university runs through that gantlet that there’s some reason to believe that they not be the best teams to [be] in the big ballgame.”

  56. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2011 12:58 pm

    Gee.

    Wiz.

  57. Guy in the office May 30, 2011 1:00 pm

Remember when Ohio State president Gordon Gee dismissed the hopes of TCU or Boise State playing for the BCS championship with a comment that unlike the mid-major programs, “we don’t play the Little Sisters of the Poor.” Thought it was a pretty arrogant comment. Bachi, indeed.

  58. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 1:00 pm

Hey for as much of a donkey Gee sounds like. He participated in a flash mob…and for that he is awesome.

  59. Guy in the office May 30, 2011 1:01 pm

Oops. Beaten to the punch by Stephen.

  60. mctruck May 30, 2011 1:05 pm

Gigi, ur #40….I remember walking around Kaneohe Bay reefs at low tide in the evening when it was pitch-dark and all we had was kerosene lanterns trying to kan-napture slipper lobsters. Visability was probably 2-3 feet in either direction and every time the water made noise from the ripples, we jumped up looking in the direction of the noise in the water because of da-sharks in the vacinity. As the water started to rise I remember one of our lanterns touched the water and the glass covering burst from the water touching it…….then all hell broke out because it was like just one lantern guiding the way and everyone else behind the lead lantern holder up front were getting antsy, hearing spashes and ripples behind them…..what a rush!!, never forget that experience. Everyone was blaming the other guy for that lousy idea….and the reward was two very smallish slipper lobsters to boot.

  61. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 1:06 pm

I think the Buckeyes will survive this one. It might take them a few years to get over it but they are the Buckeyes…They have the tradition and resources that will help them to get through almost anything.

Top 2 candidates for NEXT season may be Meyer and Gruden.

I think both are a great fit but they are probably the 2 most least likely to take the job imo.

  62. mctruck May 30, 2011 1:20 pm

I’d like to see Gruden as the Buckeyes head coach because he seems like a no-nonsense coach.

I wonder, if UH had a coach like JJ and all things aside, if athletes like those lousy one’s at OU brought the house down around his ears…how the community would react towards those student athletes???…..tell you the truth, I would booooo them idiots everytime they took to the field, even to see them in public or on campus. I hope they feel good about their coach standing/covering up for them.

  63. d1shima (Aria'd) May 30, 2011 1:24 pm

The only thing that matters to me: How far will the ripples reach?

  64. d1shima (Aria'd) May 30, 2011 1:30 pm

June is an awfully tough time to be shuffling a staff.

  65. whitey May 30, 2011 1:36 pm

like al said, the buckeyes are now the blackeyes. personally, i think they should get penalized more than usc cause their problem was with basically one player who already left school. the “mighty” osu had 5 or more players who are the major cause plus a stupid coach who tried to lie his way out of it. this is the bachi they deserve for being so arrogant and thinking they are untouchables.

  66. whitey May 30, 2011 1:37 pm

d1, to the shores of tripoli????

  67. mctruck May 30, 2011 1:40 pm

what really makes sense these days??…even with tressel’s resignation today?, it boils down to like the saying goes, “the chips are on the table.”

Gruden, has dealt with supposedly, grown men and he takes a no nonsense approach….”in or out.”

The discussion with coach Meyer, is that the pressures dealing with young kids, were getting to him, thus his leaving college fb, so why would he want to go back into that situation again?

  68. whitey May 30, 2011 1:41 pm

ohio state could have come clean when they knew most of the facts and forced tressel to suspend all the players involved for the bowl game, but he thought he could get out of it by lying and now pays the price. the athletic director should be punished also for letting this problem continue.

  69. whitey May 30, 2011 1:44 pm

i think that this is one of the reason why uh does not get any 5 star players because basically they want something prior to signing, then think they can get away without adhereing to rules. discipline, oh, discipline where art thou??????

  70. RedZone May 30, 2011 1:51 pm

Phillip Fulmer is looking for a coaching job.

  71. mctruck May 30, 2011 1:51 pm

EspnU discussion this morning was, “is it worth trying to recruit a 5star athlete?” Because, apparently many 4/5star athletes feel they are, “ENTITLED” to recieve anything/everything out there…while in reality, it’s when they graduate or leave school early should they make it to become professionals. Kids now days have gotten their prioritys all screwed-up, and it’s adults who are making things worse what with these 7-on-7 camps, etc.

  72. RedZone May 30, 2011 1:57 pm

  74. Ralph May 30, 2011 2:33 pm

The Bows RPI and the their membership in the WAC were possible reasons they weren’t invited to the NCAA baseball regional.

    Fullerton Regional.

#1 seed Fullerton at 40-15, #2 Stanford at 32-20, finished 5th in the Pac 10, #3 K State at 36-23, finished 6th in the Big 12, and 4th Illinois, 28-25, winner of the Big 10 regular season and tournament.

UH finished at 34-25. Next season, continue the tough out of conference schedule as they did this season, win as many series as possible, and hopefully the name teams do well the rest of the season to improve the Bows RPI.

  75. jm2375 May 30, 2011 2:57 pm

Fullerton – Big West Conference. Trap is anxiously awaiting the 2013 season.

  76. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 3:58 pm

    #69,

I really don’t think one of the reasons Hawaii can’t get bluechip players is because they want something we aren’t able to give them.

Wait a minute…thats exactly why we don’t get them. We can’t provide them the experience that a Ohio St. Texas or Alabama can in terms of an athletics program.

But in all seriousness, we don’t get blue chip players because of discipline just as much as SJSU can’t win football games because their colors are blue and yellow.

We need to recruit based upon the talent in our conference and what we are reasonably able to get. Even w/in the upper crust of football programs there are the have and have nots. A Stanford, Arizona, and Cal will not be able to compete with an Oregon or USC. A Vanderbilt, Kentucky will not be able to compete with an Alabama or Florida.

    It is what it is.

  77. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 4:01 pm

You can also get bluechip recruits every year and suck (Notre Dame past 5/6 years) and you can get so-so under the radar recruits and kick butt (Boise St.).

  78. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 4:04 pm

I also believe that just because you can flash the cash in a program won’t make you automatically successful either.

We as a University can infuse tons of money..Millions upon millions of dollars into facilities etc…and what you get is SMU *cricket sounds*…

  79. d1shima May 30, 2011 4:10 pm

    iwwthm,

You have seen that u-tube of the U of O facilities, right? 😯

  82. Old Diver May 30, 2011 5:34 pm

Tressel resigns over a few dollars from a tattoo-parlor scandal? I don’t believe it. Scandal is the name of the game in the untouchable Big Ten. They are almost as bad as the SEC, well almost anyway.

  83. warriorsun May 30, 2011 6:23 pm

    Stanford cant compete??

They are picked to take ALL THE MARBLES IN THE pac 12 in 2011.

  95. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 10:33 pm

    #83,

Yeah, Stanford cannot compete on a regular basis…To whom do you think they could attribute their short lived success? Thats right…the guy who is now the coach of the 49ers.

But that aside, I was not referring to who can occasionally win games (SJSU went bowling in 2006). What I was referring to was that even within “power conferences” you have disparity.

If you think Vanderbilt or Kentucky can stand up to a Alabama or even Georgia or an Iowa or Minnesota can stand up to a Ohio State or Penn. State in terms of recruiting etc then I don’t know what to say.

  96. whitey May 30, 2011 10:34 pm

according to other news, it seems that the blackeye coverup is not going to end with tressel’s resignation. the ad and pres knew what was going on and yet did nothing and thought they could defuse the situation by backing tressel. here’s to the pres who called the non bcs schools nothing and were not equivalent to the bcs schools. gee, won’t it be something if you don’t have a job as osu pres.

  97. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 10:40 pm

    #96,

The AD might be in the hot seat but the president Gee has to be safe. I think he has done quite well for OSU as a whole. Gotta remember that OSU is first and foremost a University. They support 1000x more college students than student athletes. He runs the biggest University in the US if I am not mistaken and has steered the academic side quite well.

  98. whitey May 30, 2011 10:46 pm

iwwwthm, i don’t think ohio state was always that good. i remember when minnesota and iowa were the kingpins of the big 10, then along came mich st, michigan, and wisconsin. ohio state started becoming a power because the ohio hs programs with all the steel mill/coal field kids. with the closing of steel mills and coal fields, the power has shifted to the south, florida thru texas because the southern states eliminated segregation which help upgrade their hs programs. There were coaches like Murray Warmath, Forest Evershevski (spp), Bo Schemblechler, and Duffy Daugherty. Woodrow had a good program, but he was not the dominant team in the big 10.

    greetings fellows.

  102. whitey May 30, 2011 10:53 pm

iwwwthm, not going argue about smith or gee job, but am just passing on info from another paper. you neva know what is going to happen till the ncaa meets in august or september. i don’t think the pac-10 will let osu get off the hook when usc got a pretty stiff penalty. usc fired their ad, but not the president because he did not open his mouth about the bush situation.

    #98,

The numbers kinda speak for themselves. 7 National titles.

Since 1913 when they entered the Big 10 they won 35 conference championships (CC), 2nd to Michigans 42.

    All time Big-10 W-L record is 462 to 166

    40+ Bowl appearances.

    Iowa – 11 CC’s

    Minnesota 18 CC’s

    Illionois 15 CC’s

Whether or not the SEC is a better conference overall

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 10:59 pm

    #104,

    last sentence:

whether the Big 10 is weaker than the SEC is a matter of constant debate. My personal feeling is that the SEC is the most dominant conference overall. Big 10 guys will tell you otherwise haha.

  106. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 11:06 pm

    #102,

I think the AD is definitely going to have to answer some serious questions. And yes tOSU’s rival USC will not let the NCAA forget what they got for the Bush incident.

I would like to start my own blog one day. This was a really nice blog that you made here. Keep up the success I recently studied the manga to discover if this anime is worth the ballyhoo, and in my opinion it is worth observing. For those who do not read any manga or know anything about it, Bakuman establishes us a peek at the sweat put into producing one, and the tension and uncertainty a mangaka goes through. I feel Bakuman gives a pragmatic survey of what goes on behind the scenes to produce a manga, well as real as it can be given it is Shoujo and they need to move the chronicle to keep it occupying.
