Going the distance

Talk about a road trip.

The past Saturday, defensive end Paipai Falemalu completed the 35-mile walk from Hauula to Diamond Head. He was among about 25 participating in the Hilina‘i Walk, a benefit for strength coach Tommy Heffernan’s daughter.

Asked what it felt like, Falemalu said, “Hell.”

Falemalu and Heffernan are cousins, and Falemalu said: “I wanted to show support. … I did it. Although it was just a walk, it was pretty tiring. My legs are still sore.”

This was the second year of the walk for Hilina‘i, who suffers from development delays. Donations help defray the cost for Hilina‘i to attend the Variety School.

“It wasn’t easier the second time around,” Heffernan said. “It took us 15 hours, the same as last year. After a while, we couldn’t go any faster.”

Heffernan said Petals and Beans, a unique florist/coffee shop, provided smoothies and iced tea.

“That was perfect,” Heffernan said. “I want to thank them.”

Offensive linemen Jordan Loeffler and Sean Shigematsu met the group at Kaneohe. They live on the Manoa campus, and woke up at 4:30 in the morning to catch TheBus to the Windward side.

“They had to walk about 18 miles,” Heffernan said.

Loeffler said: “By the end, your legs are just done. You’re walking funny. It was hard, but Sean kept me going. He kept saying: ‘I didn’t wake up at 4:30 for nothing.’ Plus, I wanted to do it for coach Tommy’s daughter and all of the kids at that school.”

Is this because of the big waves?

    Big Wave:

He called me during the pageant’s intermission last week, said “hell, yeah, I’m interested in Hawaii,” and then said he had to go back to the show. It was just as well. I was driving at the time. Nothing like holding a cell phone with one hand, a tape recorder in the other, and trying to steer with elbows.

Wow, that is one long walk.

Do they have a website for Hilina‘i Walk?

  19. Pauoa Boy June 22, 2011 6:00 am

I hope PaiPai Falemalu takes his game to another level. I wish he could’ve stayed at outside linebacker instead of defensive end. Or maybe he should be the Elephant Man! He has size, but is still a tweener for DE. If he is the best pass rusher we got then why not make him the Elephant?

Sucks for Anguay, seems like he has the tools to be the next great returner at UH. If Tank Hopkins is starting at corner, id rather not see him returning punts. I’m sure we got other options. I mean wassup with Allen Sampson? Or the transfer coming in at corner who’s got a nice return average? Don’t we have some speedy receivers who are fast and shifty enough with good hands that could get on the field that way instead of riding bench the whole year waiting their turn at a receiver position?

John Hardy-Tuliau is the man, he is a special player and I think will be an All-WAC performer this year. The guy just makes plays all over the field. I’d like to see him pack on some more muscle but he plays huge and as long as he hits with ferocity and takes down the ball carrier, then its all good!

What is going on with Calen Friel’s hair? I hope he plays nasty and ugly like his hair in the trenches. Seems like he ballooned up a lot from high school. Hope its good weight and he can become another terror on the interior line. One thing I’ve noticed though is we have a lot of short stout defensive lineman. All or majority is in the 6’0″ to 6’2″ range in height… I’d like to see us get bigger on the DLine cause it seems we do okay in conference play, then when its time to play the USC’s, Floridas, Georgias, Wisconsins of the world, our line gets manhandled pretty much. Just my thoughts but id like to see some 6’3″ to 6’6″ bambunchas on the line.

    NYUH,

Been hearing Hasiak has been having trouble ever since he arrived at UCLA. Hasn’t pulled his end of the deal and hasn’t necessarily lived up to the hype of a 4th ranked guard in the nation coming out of high school. Sad to see such talent go to waste. Now he’s already lost two years and has to go to a JC or CC… Should’ve stayed home where he would’ve at least had some support and probably would’ve done better academically…

    **PREVIEW OF WARRIORS 2011**

    http://cfn.scout.com/2/1081490.html

“The team will be far better if … the special teams didn’t stink. New placekicker Tyler Hadden should be fine in place of Dan Enos, and punter Alex Dunnachie has a huge leg and will end up with all-star honors before his career is up. But every other area of Hawaii’s special teams are miserable. 111th in the nation in punt returns, 95th in kickoff returns, and 115th in punt coverage, there’s a ton of work to be done. It isn’t as big a problem for an offense that can erase field position in a heartbeat, but the defense doesn’t need to start out with its back against the wall.”

“The Elephant. The Hawaii defense was already excellent at getting into the backfield, and now there will be a specific hybrid position called the Elephant working into the rotation. Junior Brenden Daley is the perfect fit at 6-4 and 255 pounds, but several linebackers will be auditioned for what should be a spotlight gig.”

  41. BG June 22, 2011 8:26 am

Howzit PB? Hope things are calm in your neck of the woods. I’m sure everyone will be glued to the Prez’s address tonight.

I know we all hope for great physical specimens. The recruiters at Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Ohio State (to name some) just have to get the national lists and contact the top 25 where its a given that the biggest and best athletes are. The competition might be fierce, but ID’ing their prospects is easy. That’s why I give great credit to our coaches for the job they have done in identifying the diamonds in the rough and then developing them physically and talent-wise. I don’t remember (getting worse all the time!) how many major schools were after Hardy-Tuliau because of his weight? Don’t think they were many if any. So it’s important to give credit where credit is due. Been following UH football for over 45 years and I can’t remember (refer to previous comment!) when we’ve had so much overall talent on the field and on the bench. We’re had it on the field before but not with the reserves.

  42. BG June 22, 2011 8:28 am

  44. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 8:36 am

So, you all noticed the story about UH coaches being asked to extend their voluntary pay cuts? (By the way, all of the football coaches took pay cuts.)

At what point do temporary pay cuts become permanent ones?

And shouldn’t the union have some sort of say in this?

  45. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 8:40 am

Yeah, what’s wrong with that “Dan” Enos?

    lol.

But seriously, I think Scott Enos’ mom is gonna kick that guy’s butt.

  46. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 8:44 am

    #45,

Probably becomes permanent when they rewrite their contract. Again, Mack has the UH by the walnuts with that incredible contract he got…if he didn’t voluntarily give up the 7% there would be no way for UH to force him to eat it. Timing is everything…didn’t they “announce” it at the same time they penalized him for his derogatory remarks?

Didn’t realize the coaches had a union. I always thought they were exempted positions (hgea etc).

I am pretty sure their union will at the very least try and step up to fight this. Then again, if its a voluntary pay cut, not much to fight for.

  47. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 8:47 am

    ST,

Saw a topic posted on another site regarding facilities upgrades. Maybe you can answer this.

    1) Has the locker rooms been renovated from the time the news camera’s showed tape holding things together etc”? The pictures on hawaiiathletics.com still look old.

    2) Where does the whole team meet to review game material/meetings etc? I’ve been looking at schools where they have these conference auditoriums but I don’t remember there being a place in that newly renovated coaches office that could hold that many people.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 8:48 am

So what exactly is the “Elephant” position?

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid June 22, 2011 8:56 am

    Let ’em play.

  50. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:06 am

    Re: Mack’s contract.

Mack gets a lot of grief for his contract, except for one thing: He didn’t ask for that amount. That was the first offer UH made. Mack didn’t make a counter offer.

This is how it worked: JJ came to UH for $320,000. He then received an extension that paid $800,000 annually, with half supposedly coming from outside sources. Then SMU contacts JJ. JJ announces he is resigning and will accept SMU’s offer of $2 million per. UH makes a counter offer of $1.1 million. Then it increases it to $1.3 million. Then $1.5 million. And finally to $1.7 million. But JJ decides that it would be better for him and UH if he left (he said improvements to UH’s facilities weren’t going to happen if he remained.) In deciding to promote McMackin, UH offers him the initial counter-offer it made to JJ — $1.1 million. On top of that, UH decides it would pay the whole amount (and not seek outside sources.)

Not sure about anybody else, but if somebody offers me a promotion at 10 times my current salary, I’m pretty sure I’m already calling the good folks at BMW and Century 21.

So if people dislike what Mack is being paid, they need to blame the people who made the offer: the chancellor and former UH president.

  51. SteveM June 22, 2011 9:06 am

    Good morning everyone!

  52. Kevin June 22, 2011 9:09 am

    iwwthm,

There is a “lecture hall” on the athletic complex.

The entrance is on the ground floor and on the second floor right as you turn right to go to the SSC box office windows.

Its like an auditorium sized room. Looks like it fits an entire football team. Has a stage with a projection screen.

  53. Da Punchbowl Kid June 22, 2011 9:09 am

    Kazz/Kevin:

Do you plan to keep the new handle “Kevin” here?

I will miss the name “Kazz”. I associate it with a refreshing style of “blog verite” and a one of a kind sense of humor.

Please reconsider, because “Kazz” is a WB institution and I hope the handle and style of posting associated with it will continue. And besides, “Kazz” has sizzle and personality to it, “Kevin”, aahhh, not so much.

In any case, don’t go changing, buddy.

  54. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:10 am

And, yes, coaches pay union dues so they are part of the union.

  55. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:12 am

There also are meeting rooms inside the athletic complex next to the locker rooms.

And I think they use one of the classrooms across rom the dance studios.

    let ’em play!

  58. Pauoa Boy June 22, 2011 9:14 am

    Howzit BG,

True that our team is loaded with much more talent all-around… I don’t mind our line being what it is I just would prefer the big huge guys on the line. Anyway, Tuliau’s high school were I used to live has alot of D1 caliber players there, Vista Murrieta.

Anyway, who the frikk is Dan Enos??? Special teams would’ve been better if we didn’t fair catch every ball. Plus if more effort was put into actually trying to block somebody maybe we would’ve been decent. In any case, I bet Coach Tomey will have our special teams rocking and rolling this year!

  59. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:14 am

Elephant gets its name from the first letter in “end” and “linebacker.”

It’s a hybrid in which the player can align as a standup rush end or drop back in coverage. USC uses the name elephant. Other teams use the name joker.

  60. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:15 am

    I’m pretty sure it’s HGEA.

    #55,

What union are they a part of?

Gotta wonder huh? With all that UH coaches put up with sometimes, most unions would have called for a strike.

  63. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 9:18 am

    #61,

Yes I did and thats why I said I am pretty sure its an exempted position. I do not think they pay dues unless its voluntary dues in which they have “associate” status which doesn’t give them protective bargaining rights or representation from HGEA. Instead it gives them little perks like the discounts, newsletters, and I think a small life insurance policy.

You said they pay union dues so I figure you would know.

  64. Kevin June 22, 2011 9:19 am

    DPK,

    Sorry. 😎

  65. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:20 am

    Yep. Coaches pay dues.

Which is why Bolla’s first call was to the union.

  66. Da Punchbowl Kid June 22, 2011 9:20 am

As long as pay cuts for all top executives at UH are the new “normal” it would be kind of awkward not to coninue to accept the cuts. Let’s just hope we can keep those valued assitants happy.

  67. SteveM June 22, 2011 9:22 am

Kevin/Kazz — did you notice my 11:45 pm post last night? If not, please check. My two cents anyway.

  68. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 9:22 am

    #66,

    You are right. HGEA

    http://www.hgea.org/News/3003.aspx

  69. Da Punchbowl Kid June 22, 2011 9:23 am

Okay, “Kevin”, if thats how it must be…

*DPK buries his face in his hands, stifling sobs.*

“Alas dear Kazz, we hardly knew ye…” 🙁

  70. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:25 am

Reason I thought there would be some union input is that when a voluntary pay cut extends into a second year, then it seems like it’s become a permanent paycut.

And not sure how “temporary” paycuts factor into a person’s pension calculations.

Not saying the union would protest. But it sounds like something that needs discussion.

Also, c’mon, who’s going to believe it when they say that it will not be made public about someone not taking a paycut? Somebody has to know because somebody is cutting smaller checks. Besides, if I took a voluntary pay cut, I would tell everybody.

  71. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 9:26 am

Mack is part of HGEA Unit 8 (Administrative, professional, and technical employees at UH/CC).

  72. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:28 am

Don’t they base union dues on a percentage of income?

If so, I would think the union would protest the cuts because it cuts into union revenue.

  73. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 9:29 am

    #71

Just browsing his contract it seems that HGEA would have to sign off on a lot of things.

I’m not sure to what extent HGEA plays a role in these cuts though.

  75. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:31 am

There’s a difference between promotions and marketing. The head of marketing should be taking the biggest pay cut. Then again, promotions and marketing come under the same heading, and promotions is doing a fantastic job. Gets that cancels that out.

  76. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 9:32 am

Part 12 of his contract states:

“This Agreement constitutes and expresses the entire Agreemet and understanding of the parties hereto regarding employment of Coach by the University. This Agreement cannot be changed, modified or amended in any respect except in writing and signed by Coach, HGEA and the University”

  77. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:33 am

If anything, a union rep should be attending today’s meeting.

As we’ve seen in every Law & Order episode, it’s never a good idea to go into a meeting without a rep.

  78. Kevin June 22, 2011 9:33 am

Kid — there are thousands of post by “Kazz” in the archive of the blog. Maybe hitting 10,000. Too much work. If he wants to hide as “Kevin”, I find this truly ironic. His choice though.

  82. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 9:39 am

The thing is, when you use “voluntary” pay cuts to help balance this year’s budget, you have to include the restoration of pay as part of next year’s budget, or else it’s a Band-Aid savings.

This reminds me of how the state used the lag pay to save money. Thing is, that’s just a one-time savings. Eventually, when the new pay dates (20th and 5th) become the norm, there’s no additional savings.

  83. Kevin June 22, 2011 9:40 am

Having AM 1500 is great. Especially when you just miss the show.

But remembering it’s only a replay is important.

Yesterday, I tried to call in to KKEA to chime in about the new scoreboard at the Stanley and no one answered. Called three times and then I realized it was pointless since the Sports Animals probably left the studio over an hour ago.

I don’t think that was totally clear last time.

    #83,

Cheap accounting trick. It’s like that “don’t buy gas for a day” protest they have. You are going to eventually need to buy gas, just that Lord OPEC will not see the revenue until an unspecified future date.

i am guessing by voluntary JD might make it for the next 2 years or whatever. Put in a clause which is subject to renegotiation if such and such UHAD has the revenue to restore your pay. Something along those lines.

  103. Kevin June 22, 2011 10:08 am

    iwwthm,

Dude, they sold their customers OUT. Plain and simple.

The REAL SLEEZE is that Apple probably doesn’t even agree on the stance of concert promoters and pro leagues like the NBA or NFL when it comes to so-called “unauthorized” filming of their events.

Apple essentially knew how picky concert promoters and pro sports organizations are, capitalized on that and will have their “valued customers” put on the lipstick and bend over.

It’s one thing if the people at Apple believed in preventing “unauthorized” filming of special events and not wanting to have a hand in it, but to use someone else’s principals and to have your people pay for it is quite pathetic.

But hey, who said the business world needed to function on ethics????

I think we all learned enough about that back on ‘Black Wednesday’.

  104. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2011 10:09 am

Off-topic and only for those who care:

    My email to hubby’s internist:

David has been complaining about tingling in his right hand when he grasps objects like the steering wheel and computer mouse.

He thinks it is carpal tunnel syndrome.

Should he make an appt with an orthopedic surgeon?

    Email response from his internist:

I could evaluate it at my office to confirm the cause. Very possibly carpal tunnel syndrome, as this is common.

Consultation with the orthopedic surgeon is only needed if there’s a question about diagnosis (needs electrode nerve testing) or he needs surgery.

  105. Couch potato June 22, 2011 10:18 am

my assumption is Anguay has a partial tear and not a complete tear. hope his knee is stable because i’m thinking repetitive stress to the affected area may result in other injuries to that area. just like when ST mentioned overcompensating for an injury.

    at any rate, heal up!

  106. tommui June 22, 2011 10:18 am

GIGI:#105. If it is carpal – and I had it in both hands – Dr. Atkinson is probably the premier surgeon – he only does hands as far as I know.

  107. Couch potato June 22, 2011 10:22 am

  108. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2011 10:23 am

Tom, where does Atkinson practice? Queen’s?

    I’ll let hubby know.

ummm, i meant that you could have just made an appointment to see the doc like many have insisted. but no, you had to email and find out that he should see the doc.

no matter though, your hubby knows his problem and doesn’t listen to what you have to say. so that means the email was for nothing. lol

  111. Couch potato June 22, 2011 10:31 am

the photo of the “gang”, that’s a helluva lot of players. good for them!

  112. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2011 10:33 am

Hubby will see his internist later, no rush.

OK, I know how much preseason rankings are worth, but Rivals/Yahoo are counting down the FBS teams and half of the teams on UH’s schedule are ranked below #90:

    120. New Mexico St

    114. Idaho

    111. San Jose St

    104. Utah St

    103. UNLV

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20110622_pay_cuts_might_be_in_order_for_uh_coaches.html

    >UH President M.R.C. Greenwood, who made the proposal, volunteered to take a 10 percent cut of her $475,008 base salary.

The upcoming round of cuts is forecast to save UH approximately $1.6 million.>

    The above is ambiguous.

Am I wrong when I say the Athletic Department budget is separate from the UH General Fund? So, that means any percentage cuts taken from the coaches is a savings for the Athletic budget; whereas any percentage cut from the UH President and faculty is a savings for the UH General Fund. But, according to the above the UH general fund gets credited with 1.6 million. What’s up wit dat?

UH President Greenwood and Governor Abercrombie are living a lie.

The fringe benefits, wages, etc. for all of the coaches comes out of the Athletic Department Budget.

In the real world you do not cut programs that are revenue producing, nor do you cut the coach’s pay from profitable programs, i.e. football-is the engine that keeps the Athletic Department a float-along with women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball, men’s volleyball.

The powers that be should look into Title IX. Without Title IX, the UH Athletic Department would be in the black perennially, no ifs or buts.

Soccer plays in a facility with a 4,000 plus seating capacity. It has been said by many; even in Hawaii that soccer is the most watched sport in the world. Maybe so, but in Hawaii or anywhere in the USA not to many will pay to see the game.

Women’s basketball play in the same facility that women & men’s volleyball and men’s basketball have perennially been successful in bringing in the crowd.

Softball have enjoyed success the past couple of years with 1,000 plus crowds; like soccer, softball is free. But, even if softball was to charge admission, the venue is too small to make a dent in the ledger.

Instead of cutting the coaches pay from UH profitable programs, maybe the Governor and the UH President should brainstorm a way to make soccer and women’s basketball profitable.

Bottom line, that 10 million accumulated debt the Athletic Department owes to the UH general fund should be written off the books. Why? Those losses didn’t come from the revenue producing programs, but from Title IX.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 11:00 am

    #114,

That’s sorta the case every year. Outside of Fresno and Boise and maybe Nevada our SOS suffers unless we schedule decent BCS teams. 2007 may have been even lower.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 11:03 am

Not that I am advocating cutting any sports but has anyone heard if Donovan will consider cutting some non-revenue sports (men+women). I know he refused to in the past but I wonder if he might have a different take on it now.

  117. Kevin June 22, 2011 11:10 am

    iwwthm,

UH is “barely” making the requirements with regards to Title IX compliance and NCAA D1 status with regard to the amount of programs they must field to stady D1.

Cannot do one without breaking the other.

  118. jm2375 June 22, 2011 11:13 am

seasider – #115 – all department budgets have a General Fund aspect to it. It all depends on how you look at it. Except for maybe UConn & Tenn, women’s basketball does not make money anywhere. IIRC, UH is the only school that where volleyball MAKES a profit.

iwwthm – #117 – UH maybe close to the minimum # of sports to maintain D1 status. I don’t think any women’s sports can be cut without violating Title IX compliance.

  119. Kevin June 22, 2011 11:16 am

Speaking of… I believe most, if not ALL, Big West programs field men’s soccer.

UH obviously doesnt and there is nothing about UH picking up a men’s soccer team.

I guess it’s a reverse agreement ala the MWC football only deal, UH is in the Big West in a all sports except for men’s soccer deal? 😆

  120. Kevin June 22, 2011 11:18 am

    JM,

Yup, cannot cut any women sports without violating a federal violation and cannot cut any male sports or you risk losing your D1 status with the # of teams you must field.

That and cutting Warrior Tennis or Golf ain’t going to make much of a big deal in savings anyway.

I know that it’s a lot for most people to wrap their brains around, but Coach Mack is almost like the head of a corporation. By winning and fielding a product like the warriors of this era, we have been able to move our football program into places we could only dream of at one time. Coach Mack may be the highest paid state employee, but he is worth every cent. For the money that football brings in — both directly and indirectly, he is worth every cent. For all his players graduating and we having a “national” presence, he is worth every cent. He is the head of the Hawaii Football corporation, and he and his hard working assistants should get paid every cent they are worth.

  135. bigislandkurt June 22, 2011 11:53 am

Mack is extremely “people friendly” and approachable, which has healed many “wounds” over the years from JJ and Von Appen. I truly believe Mack is worth every cent if he is bringing in profit and holding up the other non-revenue athletic programs.

  150. WarriorMojo June 22, 2011 12:52 pm

Gigi, okay I’m not a doctor — and don’t even pretend to be one on the internet — but ask your husband if his symptoms worsen when his wrists are bent backwards, i.e. away from the palms. He might also be aggravating this depending upon what kind of weightlifting he is doing and how he he is gripping the bar for exercises like bench press or military press. He needs to keep his wrists straight.

Treatment for carpal tunnel is generally NSAIDs and splints to keep the wrists straight. Surgery is often not necessary as the symptoms often subside in the absence of further aggravation. If surgery is necessary, it entails a three to five six inch incision along the palm and inner wrist so that the nerve can be freed.

If the problem is not CT, aside from the other suggestions that have been made, he could also have an aggravation of the ulnar nerve which runs through along the outer elbow. A pinch in that area can cause symptoms of tingling/pain in the forearm and wrist.

  151. Couch potato June 22, 2011 1:00 pm

i don’t know but that is a good impersonation of a doctor.

i’ve seen pictures of the hubby guy and he doesn’t look like he lifts weights. has to be another cause for the tingling.

  154. A-House June 22, 2011 1:02 pm

    Football rankings:

pre-season UH is #90 from the top or #30 from the bottom – thus, one can conclude that 66% of other schools are above – damn, simple math is my maximum! next time the conferences are published, I will need to retain same to know # of cenferences and schools that play football.

now, with 5 BCS conferences, and I am assuming, that all members of the BCS schools are ranked within the top 60 inasmuch as they have to play many “conference games”, which means that from all the other conferences, we are in the top 5% group? Great Statistic!

exceptions in the top 60 would be Notre Dame, BYU, TCU, Bosie State, Fresno and Nevada and Army and Navy. Why was Nevada ranked #11 when UH played that same WAC teams? Their SOS must have sucked like UH, but still top 15! How U figgga?

do they bother to include the Ivy League, Ohio Valley Conference, Southwest Conference, etc. in the SOS? are some of these schools ahead of UH? maybe we will see an Ivy League school in the top 10 some day.

I remember UH playing Delaware and Grambling and gettin bus up!

“Rambling Rose, Rambling Rose, why I wonder no one knows………..”

On a completely different subject, I highly encourage Game of Thrones fans to read the books by George R.R. Martin. They are truly incredible. Be aware though that the series is far from complete. The fifth volume is due in July and there are apparently going to be at least two more to follow.

I’m just hoping I live long enough to see the series through to the end as I’ve been a fan of Martin’s since his first short stories through the Wild Cards era and then to Game of Thrones, which is the first volume of the Song of Ice and Fire series and was published back in 1996 or so. Fifteen years, amazing. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

  156. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 1:11 pm

    Kevin:

I think the NFL disagreement is legit.

There’s $9 billion in the pot. The owners take a $1 billion out of the equation, then there’s a division of the rest. The owners wanted to extend the regular season, by two games, but didn’t want to contribute more to the cost of post-playing medical. What’s more, the players would not have received additional money for the extra games. It would be like if you were paid $50,000 a year based on a 40-hour work week, but the boss wanted to pay you the same amount for a 45-hour work week. And then the owners, who get to keep the luxury box money even though many of the stadiums are supplemented by tax dollars, tried to sneak in an arrangement in which they would receive TV revenue even if the season weren’t played. And when the owners’ demands weren’t met, they shut down the business. And when they claimed poverty, they refused to open the books.

I think the proposal that was leaked will be good for both sides.

    Today’s theme: Let ’em play!

  157. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 1:15 pm

    Re: Rankings.

An agent said that a player’s true draft position is where he was drafted. When people say a team got a steal by getting a projected first-round pick in the third round, none of the pre-draft projects matter. If he’s picked in the third round, he’s a third-round player, no matter what Mel Kiper Jr. says.

As for preseason rankings, same thing. The only ranking that matters is the one at the end of the year.

  158. WarriorMojo June 22, 2011 1:18 pm

Back to the topic at hand. Although I’m preaching to the choir here, it is worth repeating that one of Mack’s GREAT accomplishments is recruiting solid citizens to this program. While I’m sure there are incidents where players have acted inappropriately on Mack’s watch, those seem to exceptions. It is much more typical to hear about Warriors who have contributed and given back to society.

That is in direct contrast to many other schools. Look at Nevada for instance. Tormey was fired as HC because his teams were losing while getting into all kinds of trouble. Ault came back and his teams have won some games, but the legal troubles don’t seem to have gone away at all.

At Hawaii we want to win as much as anybody, but we want to win the RIGHT way. The team is doing that. Mack, the assistants, the players, and their families should all be commended for that.

  159. Couch potato June 22, 2011 1:19 pm

A-House, it did not say Hawaii was #90. you have to do your math again at a later date when more of the teams are revealed.

  160. A-House June 22, 2011 1:28 pm

Oopps – I did an ooopssssss – my title should have been SOS rankings!

On TV it’s great. Not so great in person. On TV, you get to watch three replays for every play. In person, you just hope the wet floor is from spilled beer.

  166. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2011 1:58 pm

    ST, lol.

The only NBA game I watched in person was the Lakers’ exhibition game at the Stan Sheriff Ctr.

Remember being fascinated by Shaq’s enormous shoes.

  167. sports for fun June 22, 2011 1:58 pm

Concerning basketball, I prefer the college game to the pros. During the regular season, the pro game is a bore, just like ST said. Only during playoff time is the pro game exciting because the intensity is turned up. I like football in both college and the pros. During bowl season in college, it’s not as good as the NFL playoffs, but, hey, it’s football!

  168. mctruck June 22, 2011 2:06 pm

I prefer college fb games….and I’ve seen Shag’s shoes,(one side-only), from a fan who was given that shoe from Shaq himself….put some skates on it and you’ve got a skateboard.

    #142 jm####,

MWC>WAC in 2012…future is always mystery but consider this a lock.

Remember if the MWC didn’t have weak bottom dwellers they would already have had AQ status and we wouldn’t even be talking about how excited we are to be a member in 2012. Utah, TCU, BYU may never have left. The bottom dwellers are THE ONLY THING that are keeping the MWC from meeting the final BCS AQ criteria.

You get the “best” of the WAC and move them over to AF which has been pretty solid and SDSU which is projected to have another good year in 2011. Just tough luck they lost Hoke to UM.

Yeah they have several bottom dwellers lik UNM and CSU but its going to be a lot better and a lot tougher. Its not the SEC where like 75% of the teams could just walk all over the WAC and any other mid-major with their 2nd string.

WARRIORMOJO #156 – You read books other than legal stuff??? 🙂

You would think that with electronic books – like Nook or Kindle – no paper being used, no binding etc – that it would be cheaper. The Book of Thrones at Barnes & Noble is about $10 more if you got it over the internet into your electronic reader than if you bought the actual physical books!

    *UNLV Athletic Budget Cuts*

    http://www.lvrj.com/sports/donations-cuts-help-unlv-balance-sports-budget-124337869.html

-UNLV looked to donors and cutting spending to cover budget shortfalls and may actually finish in the Black. Big surprise right? lol. Hopefully UHAD will be able to hustle some of our boosters during this time and in boost the corporate donation program.

They will also require all employees to pay for their own cell phones which comes out to $140,000/year.

“Athletic-department employees will take a 4.8 percent pay cut — a 2.5 percent salary reduction and another 2.3 percent through six furlough days.”

“Livengood credited Julio Freire, senior associate AD for athletic development, and his staff for increasing donations by nearly 21 percent to reach the goal of $4.4 million.”

“Livengood said Tuesday he expects the athletic department to finish the fiscal year June 30 with perhaps a $150,000 to $200,000 surplus.”

  175. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 2:43 pm

I never really thought about how much things like cell phones actually cost to UHAD. Wonder if JD will look at cutting off these types of expenses.

I don’t know if UHAD offer things like car allowances, expense accounts, food at meetings, internet service at home/network cards, etc. but I can imagine they must cost quite a bit if they do.

  176. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2011 2:44 pm

  177. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2011 2:44 pm

If you have a Kindle or Nook, how can you show off what you’re pretending to read?

  178. gigi-hawaii June 22, 2011 2:48 pm

ST, a fellow Kindle owner came to my house from Hilo and asked to see my book list on my Kindle.

You can transfer books from one Kindle to another.

PS. She wasn’t interested in my selection.

  179. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 2:48 pm

    ST,

Was UH able to address the locker room issue by remodeling/renovating them yet? Or is it still in the planning phase.

I saw this news report again and it was just depressing to see the condition with the duct tape holding together the stereo. lol.

preseason rankings are projections that mirror programs. sure, many coaches use the well-worn phrase “it’s the end of the season rankings that count”. what else are they going to say? usually this quote comes from coaches who are ranked #1 or in the top 10. but for programs like Hawaii, who are not a team perennially on the cusp, pre-season rankings matter. it grabs national attention and above all, it’s a sign of program respect.

Chris ault, nevada’s coach, not only turned down $25,000 in bonuses he earned last season but also took a 5% cut in salary. however, nevada did give ault a 2-year extension on his contract.

Ault was the lowest-paid head coach among teams that finished in the final AP Top 25 last season, and was the only Top 25 coach to make less than $1 million. Ault was earning a base salary of $443,092 plus bonuses.

That means his salary starting July 1 will be $435,119 instead of $476,065.

folks love da general in reno.

  196. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 4:29 pm

    #195,

As much as I hate to say it UNR fans have a good deal in Ault. He may be a grouchy and unpleasant person to look at but he gets the job done and his success on the field will probably continue even without what’s his face QB.

  197. warriorsun June 22, 2011 4:35 pm

for those that recall: ault was the nevada AD who fired chris tormey and appointed himself head football coach to take over a beleagured wolfpack program after a self-imposed hiatus from coaching. ault is a company man. hard to find loyalty these days…..u gotta salute the general.

  198. warriorsun June 22, 2011 4:50 pm

many local athletes have difficulty adjusting to the mainland. hasiak had prior history at the westwood campus. hope he can get it together in juco. he has three to play three. if he does, hawaii should be considered in 2012. nothing like playing at home in front of family and friends. at 6-6, 315, it doesnt matter to the nfl if he is wearing a warrior uniform.

  199. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 4:54 pm

    #198,

I would include Petersen in the “loyalty” column. I don’t recall him ever getting a solid offer to coach at a different school. However, what are the chances that Petersen NEVER got a lucrative offer at the numerous coaching vacancies at BCS schools that could pay him $2M+/year.

I’m looking for the video online but Petersen has stated he is quite content at Boise. He said he is compensated well enough. He isn’t drawn by the multimillion dollar/year deals and that his relationship with doctors (for his son’s brain tumor issue) is something he doesn’t want to break.

I wonder how long before he gets an offer he just can’t refuse.

  200. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 4:57 pm

    #200,

What I meant was that I don’t remember seeing a confirmation by any school that Petersen was offered or was their first choice. His name just comes up and I think at most he flew out for an interview or something for the Stanford job if I am not mistaken.

  201. Kevin June 22, 2011 5:18 pm

    Stephen Tsai:

    June 22nd, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Be that as it may…. my personal disgust lies in the fact that it’s NOT $50,000.00 for a 45 hour work week.

  202. Kevin June 22, 2011 5:21 pm

“one of these days.. one of these days…”

Ah…. nothing like good old-fashioned 1960’s televised subtle hints of domestic violence.

    “POW!!! RIGHT IN THE KISSER!!!”

  203. warriorsun June 22, 2011 5:23 pm

chris petersen is a natural target for the PAC 12. he went to school in calif and recruits in calif. at 46 he is nearly 20 years younger than chris ault. the general took nevada to the top of his division, but not as high as petersen has taken da donks in quicktime to two bcs bowl victories (’07, ’10), a 61-5 record and national recognition and top 5 rankings.

i dont see petersen staying at boise. neither do i see him following his two predecesssors who leaped at their first big offer and fell on disaster. petersen has lost in successive years, his DC and OC for greener pastures. after a while, rebuilding your staff is as difficult as maintaining a top-tier program with limited resources. both coordinators were young and mentored by petersen. that has to hurt, no matter what petersen says.

no one would blame him either.

security and windfall becomes more tempting as age advances. that is human nature.

for the general, his legend grows as he remains at reno in his twilight. for the other chris, challenges and new horizons beacon brightly.

  204. warriorsun June 22, 2011 5:33 pm

    #200.

no program is going to admit so-and-so is their top choice in public, until the deal is sealed.

hint: many programs use the wording, “short-list” or “exploring potential candidates”.

wasnt it known that petersen was an early choice by the cardinal? if memory serves correctly, their interest was in early january. standford contacted boise for permission to talk to petersen. they ended up selecting an alum and 4-year OC, david shaw. he was also a key to andrew luck staying for his senior year and bypassing the nfl draft.

Going to the Board of Land & Natural Resources meeting at 9 am tomorrow. Two big issues – the resignation requests which are not on the agenda but which will be put on given their importance plus a couple of posted items.

If the meeting finishes in any sort of reasonable time, I’ll stop by to say Aloha to Curveball, but don’t count on me for food. Where’s he going? He’s wayyyyy too young to retire so is he taking on another career?

Operating Budget issues: Salaries and fringe benefits for all employees come out of the General Funds; expenses for the teams (travel, food, uniforms, equipment, etc.) may come out of the GF or from ticket sales.

I am getting really interested in looking at the Department’s financial records over the past 15 years or so. Is there any interest here on anyone else’s part? If so, I’ll share what I find out with Stephen.

  210. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 7:29 pm

    #205,

There are often “leaks” to the media about who is favored or wanted by a school or in what you call a “short list”. Petersen has never been “leaked” by any source but always mentioned by the media as a “possible” candidate w/o any source (unnamed or otherwise) to fall back on. Cincinnati, ND, Michigan, Florida, Maryland, Tennessee, Washington, even OSU come to mind. Stanford was the only school as far as I know that actually had any talks with Petersen and didn’t deny that he was in the running or made the “short list”.

My point is that he never made the “short-list” from any source. Interesting but my guess is he turned them down pretty quickly.

  211. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 22, 2011 7:33 pm

I am going to wait for Wazzu to can Wulff and see if there is any development with Petersen wanting (gambling) to take over a program that has been irrelevant for I dunno how long now.

I drove past this tonight on my way to hula class. I thought someone had been hit by the truck, but, whoa! Mahalo Ke Akua for multi-talented football coaches.

A boy’s football coach tackled a man who tried to stab him in an unprovoked attack tonight outside Mid-Pacific Institute.

Paul Brown, assistant offensive line coach for the intermediate Pac-Five football team, had just finished coaching and was waiting at a red light when the assault happened at Kaala Street and University Avenue, fronting the school, about 6:30 p.m.

Brown, who is also a restraint instructor at the Kapolei juvenile detention home, noticed the guy approaching him from the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Slugger – #224 – I saw that article and my jaw dropped. Thankfully, it happened during the evening when there are very few people are around. I shudder to think what would have happened if it was in the morning or early afternoon with all the kids around. Surrounding that intersection is a church (and a preschool) and a park with a playground.

  225. koakane June 22, 2011 11:32 pm

    evening

yes just read it also. glad no one was injured. coaching sure has changed

  226. Slugger June 22, 2011 11:44 pm

I was the 3rd car back from the intersection (at a red light) when the coach had the guy on the ground. I thought someone had been hit, but there were a couple of people standing around calmly, so I figured 911 had been called. The guy on the ground was kicking his legs and the coaches were holding him down. Very few people around, so that was a good thing. The police cars heading down Manoa Rd. didn’t have their lights on, but I hoped they were heading to the scene.

On a lighter note: “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” just did a segment on Brandy’s restaurant in Flagstaff! Nice to see my friends Brandy & Ed. Just ate there in March.

This story has lots of information/details about the requests-2-resign – including the Stadium Authority.

I agree, saving funds on the internet or in genuine lifetime is 1 of the most essential issues proper now. With the way the economic system, career circumstance, gasoline selling prices and housing industry are everybody is hoping to help save a dollar here and there. I feel that how to help save dollars and how to be a far better shopper must be a course taught in high college. So that children can have an even chance and recognize what transpires to income when they have to spend their own costs.

Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone has ever worked with these guys http://doiop.com/MortgageReliefHelp Not to sound overly optimistic, but these guys literally saved my neck. I guess by now you all know the story – I’m a married dad of 2 beautiful daughters and early in 2010 I got laid off my “secure” job because of the economy. My wife and I simply could not afford to keep making the mortgage payments of $1,400 a month and we dipped into our savings. At the start of this summer, I really knew something had to give in and I looked around desperately to find a way to lower my monthly payments. I spent probably 10 hrs a day looking up stuff online no kidding. These guys couldn’t have come at a better time, the literally saved our family (and my wife and i’s marriage which was falling apart under financial stress). If you have a chance, try them out and see what they say. Maybe they can be of some help. Best of luck! http://doiop.com/MortgageReliefHelp

Well…QB Tom Brady seemed to be to chosen Number 1 in Outstanding 100 Game enthusiasts of this season at standard Football web pages. I take great delight in his experience a lot. Late round draft choosing, thin young children at the combine, ultimately offered an opportunity and living the desire of NFL prominence and a super model lover. I often show my great pride by having on football jersey with a number 12 and his name. There exists a retail outlet from where i selected my excellent jerseys. Jeter’s fans could get mlb jerseys, Jordan’s follower can collect discount nba jerseys and Crosby’s supporters can order nhl jerseys wholesale there. What’s amazing is they supply youth nfl jerseys and women jerseys. I sent 2 pieces as presents to my nephew. He likes it very much. I purchased my sports team a dozen of cheap nfl jerseys at about 20 dollars, quality is far better than expectation, big surprise. Honestly i desire to have my own name and number padded on NFL uniforms, I hope they are able to customized jerseys soon.
