The Warriors missed defensive end Fetaiagogo Fonoti, who sat out because of a bruised left kneecap. But resting him was wise, and the Warriors are hopeful he will be available to play in the upcoming two-game road trip to Seattle and Vegas.

* * * * *

It’s been a tough past week for former UH players. Ashley Lelie, Kynan Forney, C.J. Hawthorne, Josh Leonard, Jameel Dowling, Solomon Elimimian and Melila Purcell III.

With the high salaries, there just aren’t very many openings in the NFL.

Some will get other chances. Some will move on to the next phase of their lives. Too often in the business of football we forget that the participants are real people with real lives. Hawthorne has two children. Leonard has a son. Dowling’s girlfriend is expecting the couple’s first child. Purcell is engaged.

We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Donovan Raiola was signed to the Bears’ practice squad. That means he will be mentored by Olin Kreutz.

* * * * *

The Iceman — Dan Kelly — got his first start for the Cal Baptist soccer team yesterday. Kelly’s a goalie.

    ST: We’ve covered this before.

What’s the story on Joseph Napeahi ?

I think that he is on campus; but he is not on the team.

You mentioned that he had a weight problem; is that still the case.

The team could sure use another big body; and he has 2-years JC experience.

ST, what are the chances that Fonoti, Brown, and Purcell play on Sat?

  25. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 6, 2009 11:46 am

    Brought over from yesterday’s blog

With respect to the PAT issue late in the 4th quarter – if this novice football fan can raise the issue prior to the lineup, then it should be obvious to the people actually down on the field.

Also, the defense stepped up very impressively – now if only the offensive line could do the same, then we’ll be able to watch some good plays. And this novice fan was quite impressed with Alexander’s ability to change tactics about throwing v. running right on the go.

Question: Are Greg Alexander and Jared Alexander related? I don’t have access to an old baseball program to check out the latter’s high school.

Re the Old Futs leaving the game before it’s over:It happens at all the games no matter which sport and whether UH is winning or losing. At the on-campus games/matches, people leave to get a head start on traffic which usually clears out in 15or 20 minutes no matter what. The Aloha Stadium crowds are hoping that the same thing will happen there, but usually it doesn’t make any difference whether you leave five minutes into the 4th quarter or stay around to sing the Fostering Mother.

When we left the after-game T-Gate at 11:30 pm the other night heading towards H-3, the Blue Lights were still directing traffic out of the Stadium parking lot.

UPDATE PLEASE ON MY NICKELBACK! I’m hearing two very different injuries.

Who is the person referred to in #234?

Time to go count bottles & cans and then head into town for the last two volleyball matches.

Will be dropping off a check at the Na Koa luncheon tomorrow.

    #25

When I wrote in #234 was mere speculation as to why the Warriors are waiting this long in naming a GA (for the WR). But to me it would make sense, too, if the UH staff was biding it’s time to see if one of the former Warriors not making onto a NFL roster this year was available to come back to the school and coach. I’d think if lelie was interested he’d probably get the job.

    CRW . . .

Nothing really planned for Friday night or pre-game on Saturday.

Well, maybe if I can get up to the hotel fast enough and contact Koakane we might have dinner up in the Seattle area on Friday night.

As far as pre-game on Saturday parking may be an issue so getting there early enoughand finding something to do/eat will be the issue. Quite a few sports bars in the area — do not know about food quality, though. May choose to eat lunch then make the trek to Qwest Field.

Would you please send me your cell phone number?

    ahem,

this past game was a big learning lesson for our team. especially our coaches. i EXPECT big time improvement in our coaches. BIG TIME!

for example, whoze decision was to run the PAT before changing to da 2 point attempt?

now we all know. and all coaches know we know. the truth is a novice,

    CAPITOL-ist, knew before the coaches.

stop being scaredy cats, coaches. not talking about da new guyz. talking about da coaches who’ve been here 2 years and more.
come on coaches, you can do it. show some innnovation, show some confidence in yourselfs. no scared! we gonna yell at ya, but no doubt about it, we LOVE ya. you’re us. you represent us. so no make us look bad. not in the Northwest. not against WASSU. NO SIR.

    wat, you need a 8′ sign? 😀

  45. Garret September 6, 2009 12:03 pm

Who is the person referred to in #234?

    WassupDoc,

I don’t think that any person in particular was being referred to. One thing to keep in mind is that a Graduate Assistant has to be admitted and attending graduate school…school started awhile ago and it is quite late for admissions, so I don’t see how a person who was trying to make an NFL roster could fill out an application and get admitted in time for this football season.

UH cannot just hire someone like a regular coaching position so they may just end up with being a GA short unless Mac already chose someone and he’s already been admitted to UH’s graduate school. I would say this was a cost cutting measure but GA’s make *very* little money.

I don’t think that I’ve ever read that Greg Alexander and Jared Alexander were related.

  46. Stephen Tsai September 6, 2009 12:04 pm

    labrat:
Probably a tentative travel list Tuesday night.
There will be a final one Wednesday morning. But wait. Don’t they leave Wednesday? Yep. Sometimes that’s how they do it. It’s going to be close on a couple of players.

  47. ai-eee-soos September 6, 2009 12:04 pm

naming / hiring a GA for wide receivers.

In order to be hired as a GA, one must have a degree,

AND be enrolled as a graduate student in this Fall semester.

I think it’s too late to enroll; so that eliminates the late NFL cuts.

That’s what I think the process is.

  48. Garret September 6, 2009 12:05 pm

For the next week and a half we have friends staying at our house (with 3 or 4 days of overlap between families), so I’ll be mostly off blog until after the UNLV game. I’m not going to be able to post articles here much, so it would be great if others could post articles about Washington State and UNLV…

  49. madeinhawaii September 6, 2009 12:07 pm

Couldn’t these guys that were cut.. “volunteer” their services? Put a notch onto their “experience” belt and get a leg up should they ever decide to apply somewhere?

  51. Garret September 6, 2009 12:07 pm

I agree with ST that it was wise to have Fonoti sit out this game–hopefully he’s recovered in time for the Washington State game.

  55. Stephen Tsai September 6, 2009 12:10 pm

    made in hawaii:
Unfortunately, there are a couple of limits:
    1. Locker space (which also equates to equipment, uniforms, etc.)
    2. Gender equity. (Again, it isn’t about having exactly equal numbers. It’s about progress toward equitable opportunities.)

  56. Garret September 6, 2009 12:11 pm

    madeinhawaii,

There are NCAA rules limiting the number of coaches. This actually helps UH because big-budget schools could have zillions of coaches if they wanted. There is a fine line between student assistants and coaches, but if someone wanted to list coaching experience on their resume while a “volunteer”, UH would get hit with an NCAA violation.

  57. expat September 6, 2009 12:12 pm

    Royvic,

I think Tsai has previously mentioned that Lelie is not eligible to be a GA, by which I am guessing he has not completed his undergrad degree. Did CJ graduate?

  58. Stephen Tsai September 6, 2009 12:12 pm

UH isn’t going to fill Stutzmann’s vacated GA spot.
    It’s too late.

But he was so close to making the team — and he still has a shot at the practice squad — that it’s better to remain on the Mainland.

  62. madeinhawaii September 6, 2009 12:15 pm

    Garret,

But since UH is one short of the maximum allowable, does it still matter if one came in as a volunteer coach?

  63. madeinhawaii September 6, 2009 12:15 pm

    Garret,

Nevermine.. Graduate Assistant isn’t classified as a “coach”, yet… I suppose.

  64. cavewarrior September 6, 2009 12:17 pm

Was at the WVB game last night against Texas… with a lineup of 8 players 6-2 to 6-5, Texas was intimidating at the net…Wahine have 4 players…Crowd of 8000+ was loudest during the intermission game…could have used that sustained noise level during every Texas serve, of which there were many…Thanks to UH Athletics and JD for fair reasonable prices-tickets, food, drinks. Family of 4 had an enjoyable time!

  65. warriorfanny2 September 6, 2009 12:20 pm

Greg Alexander’s intinct to scramble was spot on.
    Who can blame him?
What he did was make things happen on a night when it wasnt goin and he moved the ball….turnovers hurt us–not Alexanders scramblin….I believe his last possession 4th quarter pass to Greg Sallas in open space was bc of his scramblin and the bears were spying on him close to the line of scrimmage.
His OL is the same OL that set the D1A record for sacks in 2008 and Alexander felt it the most. Thankfully, Greg has adapted a mental clock in 2009, which is good, and he instinctly feels the pressure….he also showed good judgement and threw the ball away under pressure.
Another thing, Alexander, adjusted in the pocket, moved and continued his progressions in hopes that certain zones would clear. Many times he was successful in launching a completion after he broke from the pocket. In 2005 and 2006 Colt did the same with success–the difference is the routes schemes created by JJ which are different and more simple than MAC’s in terms of flooding particular zones based on man or D alignments. Also, CB obviousily had a quicker release than Greg, but not more guts.
    Alexander is a gamer. Period!
If Ferd Lewis wants to point a finger–it should be aimed at MAC and the OL he and Ron Lee praises without blinking their eyes.
Look, Greg Alexander is performing to the best of his ability and I personally see huge growth in his second year over 2008.
The winning TD pass to Bradley was perfectly timed and literally threaded a needle.
eh, Greg you did well brah, and yes, bring out your OL early so they can get extra reps in runnin. They looked tired.

let me get this straight stutzmen leaves 8/3 about 5 weeks ago and now we learn that UH won’t be filling the GA spot per #58. IDK about that decision by coach mack.

through my tunnel vison i thought the only explicable thing as to why the coach might be waiting this long in naming a GA was in seeing if a former warrior not making it into the nfl was available.

and now no GA..ugh..one less coach not helping with the wr

  71. warriorfanny2 September 6, 2009 12:37 pm

Take a look at Boise State’s and BYU’s winning TDs. They were planned passes which were set-up and engineered to perfection on execution. Both passes were to secondary receivers who were left open after a primary receiver cleared a zone. Great calls! Keep it simple stupid…
Another thing–both coaches had something in store for its winning drive. In BYUs case it was a quick count on a critical first down play in the last drive. The point being both teams were coached for contingencies and the game plan painsankingly detailed and well thought out.

  72. letsgowarriors September 6, 2009 12:38 pm

wow no WR coach. that is brutal.

  73. el guapo September 6, 2009 12:39 pm

If a GA candidate was not already admitted to school on August 3, it would be really difficult to apply for admission, be accepted, and also be the right candidate for the job. Evaluation of applications begin on October 1 for applications for Fall 2010.

  74. Maverick September 6, 2009 12:40 pm

    Howzit to all the gang.

Man, talk about blogging pundits out there in our cyber world. UH can’t catch a break playing a top notch 2-A team.

This was a very one-sided weekend of games with many shutouts, etc. This is only the first week of games, But why can’t football fans and writers just enjoy the season?

They want to find more fault than good. That shows me weakness on their opinion than any stronghold of intellegence and love of the sport.

    Maverick..

    True.. so true…

To imagine Coach Mack as a political animal with a consipracy theory boggles my imagination.. especially for a guy who makes a slip of the tongue type statement and apologizes profusely as he did just a few weeks ago. Nah.. Coach Mac is simply .. .Coach Mac.

That PAT scenario? Isn’t the PAT team like the FG team supposed to wait on the sideline and run in as soon as the touchdown is scored and wait for the final coaches decision as to what to do? They don’t go in too often so running in and doing some mental reps before the actual snap makes sense to me.

In the end, the Coaches made the right call, albeit unsuccessfully.

Time isn’t on Colt’s side it seems, since he’ll be 27 in 2010 but with only 2 years’ NFL experience under his belt. It’s good that Zorn wants to keep him around, but Colt probably has only one preseason left before things start getting dicey. Until then, get well soon!

    Hmmm News.yahoo.com reports that:

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AFP) – Some 2,000 students at Washington State University have reported symptoms of swine flu, university officials said, in one of the largest reported outbreaks of the virus on a US college campus.

The west-coast school last week instituted a blog to help provide information to students about the sudden and dramatic spread of the A(H1N1) virus on campus just days into the new school term.

“We estimate that we have been in contact with about 2,000 students with influenza-like illness in the first 10 days of our fall semester,” the latest online posting said.

“At this time of year, we would typically only see a handful of patients with influenza-like illness. Health care providers in the local community have also seen WSU students with influenza-like illness, but we have no way of knowing how many.

“We also have no way of estimating how many students are self-caring at home without contacting us,” school officials said.

You really don’t know what you’re talking about. It has nothing to do with being an armchair quarterback. When BC was alluding to the mistake the Coach Mack made in his post game show it was such recognizable mistake that there was nothing to second guess. The coaches mistake was stupid.

In fact the less you say would be better.

Oh sorry I didn’t realize that if you didn’t put down this coaching staff or players that you shouldn’t say anything. Too bad.

I may be wrong but I don’t recall BC saying very many positive thing about the team or the coaches, but he sure is one of the first to point out a mistake, same goes for a lot of posters here on the blog. I have seen many of times even the Pro coaches make the same mistake an have to call a time out to get their heads together during a pressure situation.

Point is that the old expression is true, it’s easier to tear something down than build something up, but sorry I just won’t tear them down, IMHO my job as a fan is to support them not tear them down, that is if I am allowed to express my opinion.

    #110-pomai

yeah, yeah go sit with pomai. he makes aspersions, like BC doesn’t know squat and other observers don’t know squat so im guessing he too has a lot of credibility of the knowledge of what he knows

just to prove how little you know pomai—BC and the coach mack are good friends. On his show BC has mentioned that he and his family often visited with the coach.

When BC alluded to the mistake the coach made it had very little of him wanting to tear down the coach. But more of begging the question of hoping the coaches get their act together on the sideline (during the PAT attempt and other times, too).

That’s the same with other writers and posters.

Kazz ~ The problem at the Willows is – they don’t open the front entrance until 11:00 AM. So if you arrive early, all you’ve done is allowed yourself to stand there with about 30 early birds.

Then you will find the front few tables are ‘reserved’ for the special guests, and the media moguls like ST & RK.

    So…get there by 11…

➡ Charge the door, runover errybody, and grab one seat! 👿

➡ Order your drink, go to the buffet table and make your plate while you still have a fresh choice. Don’t wait! You snooze you lose!

➡ Keep your registration ticket handy. They will draw the other half of it for some really great prizes. (Jason one a Jersey). 😎

➡ Don’t ask questions. There are enuff Bozo’s that insist on asking 50 questions at a time. It’s usually the same 3 guys, and then it’s “oh sorry…we’re all outta time!”

  144. Pride. September 6, 2009 2:29 pm

I hear a lot of bloggers make the statement that the offensive line needs a lot of work. Can someone please explain to me what kind of work it is that they need? What specifically is it that they need to work on. Is it footwork, hand placement, punch, leverage, balance, communication, scheme, agility, quickness, pass-set, get-off, stamina, endurance, toughness, commitment, guts, aiming point, internal clock, eye placement? Maybe if we can be more specific, perhaps we could help?

    mih –

the swine flu vaccine isn’t out yet. Even when it comes out, I’m not sure college aged adults would be in the priority group. From what I’m hearing, highest priority goes to children, esp infants, caregivers of infants and health care workers and pregnant women. Other priority groups would be those with existing pulmonary problems like asthma, since this flu seems to affect the lungs more than the upper respiratory tract.

OTOH, everybody should get their regular seasonal flu vaccine. That one’s been out since last month. Keed got her’s at her annual check-up and I’m getting mine next Friday at work. Should be covered by your insurance plan. If not, change plans!

I was very impressed with quite a bit of Warriors who were playing their first game under the lights. Great job. Was Luke Ingram long snapping? If so, I was impressed. And that punter. First college, i mean high school, i mean pop warner, i mean football game…wow, incredible job.

I mean how do you do that? First real football game, and it’s a division 1 football game in front of 30,000 people. Impressive.

Yes sir. Da wrap up is da key. Coach C. Lee said if can “tackle” then you can play football.

Had katooshes last night, but also had good share of ka-tinks because some people didn’t “wrap up”.

  169. Pride. September 6, 2009 3:04 pm

Pepa, you and the rest of the guys. While at practice, you guys are probably pass blocking for 2.5 to 3 seconds. Re-set your guys internal clocks, block everyday, every play for 4 seconds at least. Stay stout on the inside and move your feet on the outside.

Offensive tackles, you guys are probably visualizing and trying to work that outside rush end 90 degrees from the LOS. Try to think 60 degrees instead. Take your outside foot and draw a line from there to the closest flag on the goalline behind you. Work that rush end at that angle. If you get beat, then you get beat with the man going 90 degrees from the LOS, which is upfield, and you can just ride-um past the QB. Once GA gets used to it, then he’ll stay in the pocket or just step up when he feels pressure.

Most important though is to re-set the internal clock.

    Kazz,

The passing was off last night for the Wahine, hard to do anything if the pass is not good. Too close to the net, overpasses. The pass gives you a chance to run your offense. They had to constantly scramble to get to the ball. I give them credit for not giving up, it shows great character, but those Texas girls were trees!

  174. NYUH September 6, 2009 3:22 pm

ST: Please don’t ruin this blog site with giveaway contests. At least give it to the cleverest insights or the most interesting links. I realize you need to get your numbers up but be careful not to drive the rest of us away.

On another note, enjoyed the game immensely despite the early errors. Coming back from being behind two times speaks to the character emerging in this team. Special teams seem much improved. Looking forward to Dunnachie get comfortable. I think it was Kazz who said we got more yards in this game than all last year. A bit disappointed in the running game. I hope they develop some kind of power running option for the goalline. Maybe that is another thing they are saving for the road. Impressed though with their ability to get it done through the air and the defense really stepped it up at the end.

Committed Road Warrior and longdistance808 — possible UH-WA State pre-game activities, Tsai-ko “tailgate”, and post game activities is listed in a section below the UNLV game logistics…

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/las2009.html

It was placed there since many Tsai-kos attending UH-WA STate are also continuing on the Las Vegas. As in other games last year, establish email and cell phone contact with the other Tsai-kos listed there and stay in the loop for any activities.

The Las Vegas activities are a little more defined due to the long planning lead time and the efforts of las vegas and rich2176.

Looking for the Warriors to get off to a faster start against Wazzu and the O-line will be key, of course. With Ron Lee’s system being a little more complicated (more options), I don’t doubt it will take a few games to make things second nature. WSU is bereft of experienced cornerbacks (academics, kolohe, injuries). Should be to UH’s benefit.

Everything that I know about football, the coaches know already know X 100. I was just talking to myself on the blog.

The coaches, espicially the new O-line coach already knows everything that I mentioned. All of those things are in the “Offensive Line 101” course that college linemen take as freshmen. The new O-line coach already has a masters degree in Offensive Line play and was working on his PhD in the Offensive Coordinator discipline when he was tabbed to come to Hawaii. I could see his eyes on the field and could sense that the wheels in his brains were turning when he was biting his tongue while observing the discussions that Rolo and Mac were having with Ron Lee in the booth.

I could sense that the ex-head coach Tormey was biting his tongue also. Will be interesting to see how this all works out during the season.

  278. Da Punchbowl Kid September 6, 2009 7:05 pm

I’ll agree with Pride at this point. He played for the Warriors as an O-lineman. He’s also a very well read student of the game. Especially on O-line play. Think about the pointers he gave. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Why do disagreements have to become ugly for some posters here? I hope that some posters realize that their opinion is just their opinion. Anyone who purports to have all the problems on the team solved from watching on the sidelines is inherently prone to error. More than anything, we should be allowed to disagree. There is always a at least a 50% chance that any opinion here might be wrong. Relax people.

I keep reading how UCA is an “average D1AA” team, or to that effect. Can I see some factual support for that? From what I read, UCA won a D1 conference championship last year and is favored again this year with a ton of returnees including the all american DE Hart. They might not be Boise, but I think we do them a disservice in dissing them without something based in reality.

  288. Garret September 6, 2009 7:30 pm

    BG,

UCA was picked to finish 4th this season in their conference because they lost a lot of key players after last season. They played quite a number of true freshmen against UH on Friday. UCA is not favored again this year in any of the polls I saw–4th in their conference was normal.

    Garret,

4th in their conference still shows a lot of respect for their team when one considers the fact that this is only their second year in D-1aa, FCS. The seem to have a very good coaching staff and a solid roster of players.

  296. Garret September 6, 2009 7:39 pm

I just looked it up and in the Southland Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, UCA was picked to finish 4th out of their 8 teams.

  297. Garret September 6, 2009 7:42 pm

    madeinhawaii,

I agree that UCA has a *very* good coaching staff and a good roster of players. Since they were so recently in D-II, they are playing a lot of young players…probably one reason why their head coach was concerned about their lack of poise late in the game. For those true freshmen playing in their first college game to play in front of the biggest crowd ever to watch a UCA game, that must have been an amazing experience.

One concern I saw in the comments by UCA fans is that they wondered how much longer they would be able to hold on to their head coach before a bigger school would offer him more money and a better opportunity.

  298. Garret September 6, 2009 7:43 pm

By the way, Stephen F. Austin was picked 5th in the preseason Southland Conference poll and SFA played SMU very closely yesterday.

Thanks Garret…now I’ll go get some salt and pepper to eat my words LOL. I will take my own advice and go over and check my facts. I had thought that they were picked middle of the pack last year and won it all. True that their QB Nathan graduated, but they were getting the transfer from Arkansas? and many returnees on offense and defense. bbl

  303. Garret September 6, 2009 7:51 pm

The Big 12 had a very good day yesterday overall–I think they went 10-1, with Oklahoma State probably having the biggest win (Georgia). However, the one team that lost was Oklahoma and they might lose their QB for a long time, and their backup QB is a freshman.

I’m not surprised that BYU beat Oklahoma because I thought that Oklahoma was overrated this year. One key to Bradford’s success last year was that he had an awesome OL…but four multi-year starters on the OL graduated so their OL is inexperienced and will take some time to get in sync. Their top receiving target (TE) also may be out for a long time due to injury.

Kudos to BYU for that win, they deserved it. If they beat Florida State at home also, they could be the first non-BCS conference team that has a shot at the BCS title. None of the other non-BCS conference teams that had BCS shots had nonconference game scheduled against such prominent teams…but it is hard for any team to run the table.

  304. Garret September 6, 2009 7:53 pm

    BG,

UCA did get a transfer QB from Arkansas, but he’s hurt. Missing basically their entire Fall camp and not being able to practice much even now means that he really isn’t up on their system.

  305. Garret September 6, 2009 7:55 pm

UCA lost other players on offense (some just temporarily like the starting FB that missed the UH game), but they did return a LOT of talent on D–especially their key players at DE and DT.

  306. DrewHiro September 6, 2009 7:58 pm

If they run the table, BYU has a legit shot at the BCS title game, but only if they’re fellow MWC members, TCU and Utah do well also and stay in the rankings. However, I think the voters will find their reasons to keep them out of the title game.

evening warrior faithful lots of sharing of idea, insight and concern since friday’s game. I think this is good because this shows we have not lost interest in the team and still wishing for the better.

I wanted to wait to see what happens after the first three games before saying anything but at this point I’ll say this. Some improvements has happened on the oline. the guidance of coach shaw has made them a better unit. they are not quite there yet but there were times on friday they showed potential.

I agree with BG. UCA was a very good ball team. They reminded me of the Weber State team that came into the aloha Stadium last year and played well on our turf. UCA was probably not at talented as Weber State but still played the game the way it was supposed to be played. It’s understandable that they probably don’t have the depth and talent as most D1 FBS teams but I still like the way that they competed. They are an example of a very well coached team that excecuted well throughout most of the game on Saturday night. Good excecution, doing it right, attention to detail, all of the quliaties that seperate the good teams from the average. UCA will do well in their conference, no matter what the pre-season polls say.

    Hey Garret!

Found out a lot of interesting stuff I missed when I rambled through the UCA sites the first time. Folks…this may not interest everyone since the game has past already…just a disclaimer!

I think Bulla pointed out that UCA was ranked 12th in the FCS preseason poll (Weber was 8th or 9th). UCA put 9 players on the preseason first team and 6 players on the 2nd team…the most by far (unreal). Yet they were picked to finish 4th (as Garret posted). Yet, they received as many 1st place votes as any other team…they do weird things there! 9 starters returned on their top ranked conference defense and 6 on offense.

Nathan Dick (transfer from Arkansas) started 2 games for Arkansas as a freshman. Was there for the summer but suffered an arm injury that should be healed shortly…missed too much on-field practice to make the travel squad.

I thought the Southland conference was D1 since UCA transitions to D1 next year. Nope. Couchp was correct…Southland is D1AA and UCA is too, of course. I hope this helps to make amends for the false information I put out.

  316. Pride. September 6, 2009 8:51 pm

I thought that the Redskins were going to try to work with Chase Daniel on the practice squad while Colt was on injured reserve. Looks as though the Saints have signed Chase to their practice squad, making Chase their number three QB while carrying only two QB’s on their active roster. Of course there are still a few more days left for the Saints to sign another #3 to the active roster.

Kazz- Jett’s sister is a student at UH too. She was a multi-sport athlete in HS. Her name is Jori.

Liz, I heard that Ms. Jasper is gonna bring her softball talents over to Manoa as a walk on.

I believe she’d be a 1st baseman? A little competition wouldn’t hurt. After this year Amanda Tauali’i is gone, but still get Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and Sarah Robinson to compete for it, but we shall see!

  323. Pomai September 6, 2009 9:01 pm

From what I and a few others saw Friday night UCA was a very talented football team that came a long way to play the game, It’s funny that a lot of people hold the fact that they are a D1AA team against them as if that makes them inferior to a D1A team, sorry that’s not true as a matter of fact I have seen some DII teams that could give any D1 team a run for their money, we have used the same thinking when we have played so called out of our league teams, (USC, FL, ALA to name a few) that on any given Saturday any team can beat another team.

So IMHO I think we played a pretty good game, is there room for improvement, of course there is, but I feel we should look at the positive and let the coaches work on improving what is needed, an like Pride said they already know what that is they don’t need me to tell them.

Whew… just got back from the game and it was up and down.

Ran into HiFlyer during intermission and I couldn’t believe the Wahine was still somewhat “drained” from the match up against Texas.

I really thought the Wahine would come out firing like madwomen, but #26 on Cal is ungodly timely with her kills.

Good to see the Wahine fight their way back and show what UH volleyball is and has always been about. Not enough gas in da tank to pull it off in 5 though.

I noticed a new trend since this weekend with Alex Forsythe slowly replacing Brittany Hewitt as the match progresses. Hewitt is slowly getting better, but can tell her agressiveness needs to be brough out naturally as opposed to have it being “placed” upon her.

Aneli Cubi-Otineru had a monster match and Amber Kaufman is well.. Amber Kaufman!

Dani Mafua and Stephanie Brandt had a rough first two sets though, but battled back.

It’s hard to play those many games day after day. The week will provide some good rest and mental recouperation until we meet the next batch of VICTIMS this upcoming weekend.

Yeah, but no sweat though. The ladies fought back well enough, but just ran out of gas.

After the match they weren’t down on themselves at all and they’ll be ready to go next weekend.

The timing and passing was so off in the first two sets that I couldn’t believe what I was watching, but they fixed it quick.

A synopsis of the salient points about his situation Colt shared on Tanner Cooley’s radio show today:
    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/colt-brennan/brennan-discusses-injuries.html
    “Brennan Discusses Injuries

Redskins quarterback Colt Brennan, placed on injured reserve Saturday and thus ineligible to play this season, said Sunday night during a radio appearance that it’s possible he could have played with hip and hamstring injuries, but that the ailments would have compromised his performance.

“You’re always going about 90-95 percent,” Brennan said during an appearance on WJFK-106.7. He reiterated what Vinny Cerrato, the team’s executive vice president for football operations, said Saturday. Cerrato said a torn labrum in Brennan’s hip appears to lead to hamstring problems.

“It causes all this tightness in my hamstring,” Brennan said. “…”It’s just got to be patient now.”

Dunnachie did alright. His first snap was bobbled a bit but he got it off resulting in a punt of about 45 yards or so which caused a “fair catch” by UCA and pinning them on their 20..

Later in the evening I recall he placed a punt out of bounds pinning UCA inside the 15 I think.

    Pride.,

#169 ~ Could you reiterate that to the coaches without getting their noses out of joint, nice like. Sounds like good advice, but do we know that the players or the coaches read this blog? Maybe you can come to the Na Koa lunch tomorrow & provide your insight on the side to a coach at lunch

Will be interesting to see how this all works out during the season

Like Pride says, it will be interesting to see how this all works out during the season. I watched out coaches clear the field after the game. I loved how Shaw walked off the field, a satisfied look on his mug as he came into the tunnel. Great job, coach Shaw!

I admire great coaching. The UCA coaching staff was led by a very distinguished but choke em as you smile kinda guy. The assistant I talked to was no slouch either. class act, that guy. And it showed on the field. The coaching staff played as a team, led by a leader. They showed up to play football.

I’m not hanging by the koolaid stand. But I’m admiring the new assistants at UH, Chris Tormey and Gordy Shaw. These two guys are class acts. I watch them. I listen. They’re quiet, and effective. Heads held high. They don’t talk or and mumble behind people’s backs. They’re not negative. Miano is a class act too. I’m hoping that their positive energy will rub off samoa on Ron and Rolo. I think it is, actually. No matta what a coupla duuuzzeez around here say, including yours truly sometimes.

Looking at the majority of the Warriors going into the tunnel after the game, and i wuz right there at the tunnel, I felt good energy from them. All of them. especially the seniors K-Kauhane, Rocky, Greg, Blaze.
They’re good. They’re gonna get better. And i ain’t waiting to jump on da band wagon.

    Go Coach!

    GO WARRIORS!

Ryan Mouton update. It looks like he’ll be returning punts if he’s healthy enough.

The jobs were thrown wide open on Friday when the Titans released Mark Jones. Rookies Ryan Mouton (punts) and Javon Ringer (kickoffs) are believed to be the top options.

The release of Jones was “shocking,” Mouton said, “but the coaches must have confidence that if I return I’ll get the job done,” he said.

Mouton missed the final three games of the preseason because of a high ankle sprain. The cornerback is back at practice, although his status for Thursday is still in question.

“I’m really just trying to get in there and see where I’m at right now,” Mouton said. “I’m feeling good. But I guess we’ll just have to wait until game day to see where I’m going to play.”

  430. Jack Flash September 7, 2009 7:13 am

I’ve been reflecting on how we won friday night, and one good thing about the way we won is we did not show all our cards so to speak. The offense did not run the Noke or any other gadget type plays, and the defense rested a couple starters. Wazzu and UNLV will not have any good game film for prep. This makes me excited for what lies ahead.

Markowitz ohana must be feeling pretty good about #50 Abe.

play Ohio State, see how they stack up fo knock off Florida. still a long season to go.

thinking about Pete Carroll. USC loses OC, DC, planny graduates last year, Sanchez steps out, brand new Frosh QB, redshirt linemen (Abe), and still they BUSTIN up peeps. intensity and focus, belief too. Pete’s head is always in the game.

Salas, a junior, caught seven passes for a career-high 180 yards in the Warriors’ 25-20 win over Central Arkansas last Friday. He scored the Warriors’ first touchdown of the season and his 66-yard reception set up the game-winning score late in the fourth quarter.

Read, with interest, the article about the Euless Trinity football team and their Ha ka. Somewhat of a large Tongan representation in Trinity’s community.

Coach feels it’s important enough to the team and community that an assistant coach has the responsibility for their Ha ka. It’s a community thing and the Ha ka leader is a African American. Picture accompanying the article shows the PRIDE the players take in its performance.

So, Coach Mack, perhaps you can make the Warrior Ha ka an item of importance since the fans really, really like the Ha ka – it’s a feeling of pride and being part of the team. “What say you?”(alibet, Lord of the Rings).

    Liz,

Was planning to stop by the t-gate on Friday but after 1 1/2 hours in traffic to get the the stadium from town, we decided to make sure we had parking in the stadium. Next time, I’ll plan better.

LizKauai, Thanks for your welcome, great to be here. Alex has been featured in the paper back here in Oz a few times and seems to be gaining some interest. Hey if the Warriors have an aussie punting for them I’ll jump on board. The warriors have a new supporter here – albeit by long distance. Does anyone have any idea if this weekends coming game is shown on tv or internet? If not, looks like listening on the espn radio early Sunday morning aussie time. Cheers all.

    AussieSupporter,

    You could try
    http://www.channelsurfing.net
on the day of the game to see if anyone is streaming it.

Otherwise, you could listen to a live broadcast via radio at – http://www.espn1420am.com/?id=68

Doesn’t look like Washington is offering any live video, though.

aussiesupporter! ~ G’day mate! Welcome to the Tsaiko family.

My fellow Tsaiko, Pomai and I were inside the stadium 2 hours prior to game time and watched Alex ‘boom’ a few kicks to warm up. He is such a talented young man. We have watched him at several practices last month. He is simply amazing!

During his 1st punt attempt, he may have been a bit nervous. He mishandled the snap, but quickly recovered. He was able to get a decent punt down field with lots of ‘air’ under it. This allowed the coverage to get down field and limit the return.

Other punts were also ‘position’ kicks, and they were well done. Kickers are expected to be able to control the distance and the ‘hang’ time of their punts. Alex handled his duties very well for a freshman. He will only get better with time.

Those of us who have witnessed his ability to ‘sky’ those punts are so very thankful that he chose to come to play for, and become a Warrior! Oy..oy..oy!
