Giant connection

Congrats to former UH quarterback Kevin Gilbride Jr. for his role in the Giants’ Super Bowl victory.

Gilbride Jr. is the offensive quality control coach for the Giants. He breaks down videos of upcoming opponents, looking for tendencies, and gets a writing credit for the game plan.

His father — Kevin Gilbride Sr. — is the Giants’ offensive coordinator and brother-in-law of former UH line coach Mike Cavanaugh.

In 2008, Gilbride Sr. applied for the UH head coaching job that eventually went to Greg McMackin.

* * * * *

With the Warriors adding the tight end position, they signed three (Clark Evans, Ethan Watanabe and Harold Moleni) and moved two (Craig Cofer and Waylon Lolotai) to that position.

The Warriors also will be adding a fullback position, and that was noticeably absent in their recruiting class. But not to worry. The coaches are very impressed with Jared Leaf, who redshirted last year. Leaf has the size and agility to be used as a fullback and H-back.

Darryl McBride, who was the backup weakside linebacker in 2011, is moving back to strong safety.

And here’s the Royce Pollard highlight video: Royce Pollard.

  9. jkjones February 6, 2012 8:07 am

someone on the previous topic made a comment about anxiousily awaiting the next 6-mos progress at Manoa.

with coach NC, six months could be an eternity. there is so much ground to cover, tsai may short-circuit in his zeal to keep up. hopefully our grass hopper will also take the opportunity to learn from football’s version of Kesuke Miyagi…. consider this: in one month, NC has already evaluated former staff, hired 9-new coaches, made a cursory team evaluation of returning players, recruits, instituted lockerroom and training rules and has mapped out a spring timeline. He is a man on a mission who is fully aware of the challenge ahead. Chow has mentioned gaps and dips in previous recruiting cycles several times. to the point of reminding, “there is reason for the coaching change”.

to counter shortcomings, NC must recruit for immediate relief (TEs, OL, DL, and DBs) and for future shelving–(QBs, WRs, RBs, LBs). what he cant get in immediate relief he must improvise by moving players to different positions, eg, lolotai and cofer to TE. expect more to come as spring practice unfolds, and players display what they have or dont have. that will be fun for grass hopper to report, as Mr Miyagi uncovers more surprises under the rock.

6-mos wait period, NOT! with coach Chow, there is something happening every day, even if it doesnt make sense to a Larusso.

    listed @ 6-2, 200. Great move.

Did the other 2 recruits commit?

    Excited for next season.

  19. Bleed Green and White February 6, 2012 8:38 am

You know what really gets under my skin…?

Every once in a while somebody comes on to the blog and just rips into Clot Brennan! Why? What’s the purpose?

Yesterday some dope says something like “Where is Colt, still at home living with mom and dad? C’mon Colt, get a job, you really let us down,”

I mean c’mon, they guy was frickin’ awesome at UH, so maybe his pro aspirations didn’t come true, but face it, deal with it, as a Warrior, NOBODY was better!

  20. ai-eee-soos February 6, 2012 8:38 am

Things are loooooking good. I, and others, have long advocated an ” H-Back “.

” The coaches are very impressed with Jared Leaf, who has the size and agility

to be used as a fullback and H-back. “

    I’ve been there before.

but no worries, things going even out and get better.

    ” I’ve been there, done that. “

  22. Garret February 6, 2012 8:45 am

I’m glad that BSU is saying that it is too late for the Big East to ask them to join for the upcoming season. West Virginia is breaking the Big East’s bylaws and leaving after 6 months notice instead of 27 months notice, which is what is prompting the Big East to need a school early.

It should be noted that the MWC’s bylaws specifically *allows* for schools to leave when they give less than a year’s notice if they pay a penalty of about $5 mil. I’m sure that the Big East would cover that for BSU, but BSU doesn’t want to leave early. I wonder if any of the CUSA schools would leave early…UCF seems like a natural one to be asked.

“It’s too late. I can’t imagine how anyone can pull that off. We would never want to pull it off in a fashion that dealt shabbily with our existing partners in the Mountain West. I don’t think that could ever work,” Kustra said.

    http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2012/02/03/bmurphy/boise_state_president_says_its_too_late_2012_move_big_east

  23. Garret February 6, 2012 8:46 am

That would be a great role for Jared Leaf, FB and H-back would give him playing time and make him really valuable in the offense. It could be that he’s a better fit for Coach Chow’s offense than UH’s previous offense.

  24. Garret February 6, 2012 8:48 am

McBride moving back to safety seems to indicate the philosophy shift at UH on D. UH under Mack emphasized speed over size and shifted DBs to LB, DEs to DT, etc. That added speed but was vulnerable to power rushing attacks. Maybe Coach Chow figures that their upgraded recruiting can get size without sacrificing speed…

  25. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2012 8:53 am

McMackin had a solid approach with what he had to work with: Create speed by moving corners to safety, safeties to linebacker, linebackers to ends, etc.

Chow has a solid approach, too: Recruit big and fast players.

  26. WarriorNY February 6, 2012 8:55 am

When was Gilbride Jr. a QB for UH??? Does he get a ring???

  27. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2012 8:56 am

I think Boise State spent so much time trying to get into the Mountain West that delaying the departure to the Big East is the right thing to do.

Besides, it’s important not to tick off people. Leagues only want Boise State for football, nothing else.

  28. jeezy33 February 6, 2012 8:58 am

    25. I wouldn’t say solid approach. It is not like Hawaii was a noticebly faster than the opponents we played during the season.

Our safeties still got burned deep a lot. Our LBs still had trouble covering TEs. And none of our DE’s besides Laurel produced any kind of pass rush.

  29. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2012 8:58 am

He was a QB in 2000, I believe, after transferring.

He even threw a pass in a game.

And, yes, he is more noted for playing for the UH baseball team.

But I don’t cover UH baseball, which is why I’m only giving him football credit.

  30. cheepono February 6, 2012 9:00 am

hate to keep comparing chow and mack, but since ST brought it up…

chow’s method trumps mack’s method of recruiting. constantly moving players to new positions takes extra time for them to develop, understand, and learn. at least with keeping players in their “natural” positions, the chances of them contributing early is increased.

  34. kev-1 February 6, 2012 9:09 am

Apparently Tom Brady needs to tell his wife to keep her mouth shut.

“My husband can not f—— throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.” – Giselle Bundchen

Nothing like someones wife slamming his co-workers. That ought to make it comfortable for him around the office.

Were there dropped passes at crucial times? Yes. Did the players own up to it and take responsibility? Yes. Is it necessary for the QB’s wife to take cheap shots at his teammates? Nope.

  35. kev-1 February 6, 2012 9:10 am

Heavy wet morning under the covers? What’s going on over there?

    Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

  36. kev-1 February 6, 2012 9:24 am

#19 . . . No explaining those kinds of people.

If I told you that I wanted to become a police officer but didn’t make it, thus not fulfilling my dream, would I have let you down? No, because what happens in my life doesn’t affect yours, nor should it. So for Colt not to make it in the NFL is no disappointment to anyone else but himself. And who are we to judge him. He has done nothing but good for UH football and gave fans something to get excited about.

But you can’t reason with people whe randomly pop up to take shots at him. In fact, usually when one moron like that comes out, people start to defend Colt, then several more morons chime in with their cheap shots too.

  37. A-joe February 6, 2012 9:26 am

Last time I checked my offer still stands:

    Boise not going.

    28:

Without the move Hawaii would’ve been worse off. A major part of UH’s lack of defensive production can be directly attributed to poor coaching.

Moving players to other positions based on speed was not Mack’s overall mantra. He did it out of pure necessity. (lots of coaches do it when walking into a new program while trying to instill their brand of football)

As years went by Mack recruited players for their primary position.

Coach Chow graded a C on recruiting class by bleacher report

Chow attracted 18 players to Hawaii, including three of the best players in the state.

Running back Steven Lakalaka could be a major player in the future, especially as Chow devises ways to get him the ball.

Here’s wishing Shane Austin every opportunity to take his skills to the next level.

From Shane Austin’s mother’s facebook page:

Congrats to my son Shane!!! …for signing an agent agreement with NFL veteran QB Jeff Garcia today!!! It’s great to know you are in good hands…as you make one step closer to realizing your dreams of playing professional football…we love you 🙂

  51. ai-eee-soos February 6, 2012 10:54 am

RB coach position open at Nevada.

” Nevada: Chris Ault has promoted safeties coach Mike Bradeson to defensive coordinator. In making the announcement, Ault added confirmed what we have previously told you…he’s looking to hire an offensive coordinator / quarterbacks, needs to fill the offensive line spot vacated by Cam Norcross and

*** now the running backs spot with Casey Moore leaving. ***

The defensive staff is full (will go with 4 coaches). “

  52. colt4real February 6, 2012 10:55 am

    Stephen Tsai.

Anything new on the recruitment of Quenton Brown?

  53. Warrior Dave February 6, 2012 10:55 am

As I understand it, the comments from Giselle Bundchen happened right after the game. Not sure if she was talking to a friend that was with her and some reporter just happened to be close enough to record it. Very emotional time for all the Pats players, family and supporters.

I would give her some slack for her comments… mostly because its true. The biggest game of your life and Welker and Hernandaz didn’t deliver in those 2 key situations. Not a perfect game by both sides. Just the way the football bounces…

  54. ai-eee-soos February 6, 2012 10:58 am

    # 50 …

also, the O-Line coaching position is also vacant.

So, Ault needs OC/QB coach, O-Line coach, and RB Coach – if I can read halfway decent.

  55. ai-eee-soos February 6, 2012 10:59 am

    # 54 refers to # 51 – no can read.

  56. Shadow February 6, 2012 10:59 am

  57. Shadow February 6, 2012 11:03 am

I think for Nevada, HC Ault calls the offensive plays. The “OC” title is in name only to get that assistant added compensation.

  58. graham February 6, 2012 11:04 am

If i was Coach Chow I would knock on davonte neals door and tell him he would be a two way starter and ganuntee Nfl player

  61. Shadow February 6, 2012 11:19 am

There’s some very good players still uncommitted. I’m sure Coach Chow & staff know who they are.

However, factors that we may not be aware of such as grades, academic goal, attitude, coachability, work ethic, comfortability w/ home vs living away, egoist or team first player, etc. come into play as to whether UH is the right “fit.”

I believe Coach Chow & co. will get us the right players, all things considered.

  62. al February 6, 2012 11:33 am

that gives us some size back there. not sure how fast mcbride is these days, but, back in jc they were touting his 40 at 4.45.

leaf and iosefa will provide some beef.

or did I misspell it again.

    :-/

  68. Shadow February 6, 2012 12:05 pm

FB/H-back should be pretty solid w/ Iosefa, Leaf, Lister, & Elisara (maybe). The good thing about last yr was that all the RBs had to learn how to block effectively to get playing time.

I wouldn’t be surprised, too, if a big lineman is used once in a while as FB/H-back – just like how 49ers use Sopoanga on occasion.

  69. d1shima February 6, 2012 12:06 pm

Nice stuff there for Royce Pollard

  70. d1shima February 6, 2012 12:08 pm

I would be very happy with another Isaako Sopoanga on the DL!

  71. ai-eee-soos February 6, 2012 12:13 pm

Sopoanga was also used on a swing / flare pass play – really neat to see the big guy

catch / run with the ball.

  72. A-House February 6, 2012 12:16 pm

first impression is he runs like Travis Simms – little flat footed and reason for the “funny” running style.

    GO WARRIORS,

Ran into Coach Mack at Big City Diner at Ward early Saturday morning after playing racquetball at the Honolulu Club (cheap plug) with some friends. He and his wife looked good and were very gracious. I was able to thank him and wish him good luck, he plans to spend time in the mainland and here. He was happy to hear that ‘the beast’ is still playing and said he heard that coach Mcbride had retired from Weber State.

We thank you Coach Mack and wish you only the best!

  80. Pauoa Boy February 6, 2012 12:37 pm

Sopoaga is a rare breed. He is a beast. 6’2″ 330lb. mammoth that can move. He is a freak of nature, is super strong, quick for his size, and is athletic. Didn’t he bench 400+lbs., curls 200lb. dumbells, and rep 225lbs. like 50 times, yet can still jump and dunk a basketball as well as run like a bull!

  81. Shadow February 6, 2012 12:41 pm

You can always support Na Koa Football Club…hey, they’re even having a table set up at this week’s basketball games at Stan Sheriff. Stop by, say hello…and renew your membership to support Coach Chow and the Warriors.

Looking forward to practically living at the Stan Sheriff Center this coming weekend.

  98. Bowwar February 6, 2012 1:54 pm

Good to hear that Coach Mack is still in town…I think that history will prove that he was a decent coach with a lot of “Aloha” for his players and for the people of Hawaii. I believe he would have done better if he had started off like Chow and brought in an entirely new staff rather than “continuing” with the reminants from JJ. I wish only the BEST for Mack and Heather…

ST, any LOIs received today by the 3 from this weekend?

Glad to hear that McBride is being moved back to SS. I was never a big fan of the JJ and Mack philosophy of moving players to other positions to give us more speed. What it did was make us more vulnerable against the run and we still weren’t any better in coverage or at pass rushing. Really hope Brendan Daley will be our starting MLB this year as well. It would make it a lot tougher to run on us with a big guy like that in the middle.

  108. MattyBoy February 6, 2012 2:29 pm

Warrior Dave #53 . . . yeah, I guess you’re right. I’ll back off. Welker and Hernandez are two very bright spots in the NFL and on that team. Mistakes happen, and they both know they screwed up. Just kinda sucks when your QB’s wife jumps in. But you’re right. After reading the article again, it looked like she was seen speaking to her personal group of friends, instead of publically commenting.

that ball to welker was somewhat behind him. brady himself missed a lot of passes on several occasions or didn’t see the guy in the clear. but, credit the giants did had one heck of a run through the last few weeks of reg season and obviously through the playoffs.,

ST: I would have loved to see the new Tebow – Jeremy Lin. I just read the article about his first start for the New York Knicks – 28 points and 8 assists in a win over the Utah Jazz. Wow what a start for JL.

I’ll be in New York later this month, but am already booked to see a play on February 29, the only time that the Knicks will be playing at Madison Square Garden when I am there. I should have waited before getting those theater tickets. Plus our hotel is only about a block from the MSG. The only player that I try to follow in the NBA up till now has been Anthony Carter who is now with the Toronto Raptors. Early in the season, he was in almost every game as a sub. However over the last several weeks, he hasn’t had any playing time. I wonder if he was injured but I didn’t see any reports on the Raptors site about him. AC has had a long NBA since his playing days at UH.

Come on Trevor, gotta take care of your academics! Remember “student” is before “athlete”.

Hawaii men’s basketball forward Trevor Wiseman has been suspended indefinitely, UH coach Gib Arnold announced in a statement today.

“I believe it is a privilege to be a student-athlete and to represent the University of Hawaii,” Arnold said. “With this privilege comes great responsibility to be a good teammate and to act appropriately both on and off the court. When these responsibilities are not met then the privilege of representing UH will be temporarily or permanently revoked. At this time we have asked Trevor to only concentrate on being a student and he has been released from all team responsibilities.”

I empathize for Colt. He did well for UH and was a major factor that made Jones get his bigger dollars at SMU.

From the public and fan perspective he was a loyal warrior. I honestly believe if given a chance in the NFL he would have been a starter today. In the very beginning I felt that the Redskins was a team that was not going to give him the opportunity since a new coach was hired who had to win and prove himself and play a quarterback who was being paid millions. As a quarterback who ran all over the place at Seattle he to me was somewhat of a hypocrite not believing in letting someone like Colt do his thing and play to his strength. History has proven that coach was a failure.

I do wish Colt the best in his next chapter in life.

  158. jkjones February 6, 2012 8:46 pm

A UH coach once told me, “you have to try to flunk out at UH”. While I dont believe that is true, still, it does require some discipline. This isnt the first time for Trevor, he missed road games last year…. Wiseman has good work ethics on the court, gets along, stays out of civic trouble, but needs to mature in the classroom. Coach Arnold is on top of his players and usually does what is best for the athlete. Joston Thomas is a great example of following coach Gib’s learning curve and achieving by it.

Hopefully, Trevor will get it straight. Many fans are rooting for him to pull through.

Yes, it is tomorrow at 6

  164. al February 6, 2012 9:12 pm

the wiseman decision has nothing to do with academics. his playing time had dwindled recently and rightfully so as joston thomas has been a beast on the court and this coupled with hauns brereton’s improved over all play has led to fewer minutes.

when a player refuses the coach during a game, as he did saturday night, he deserved to be benched. an outright act of insubordination is perhaps the worst thing anyone could have done, in team sports you either get suspended or removed from the team. in the real world it is grounds for termination.

  165. kev-1 February 6, 2012 9:20 pm

yeah . . . don’t think the Wiseman thing has anything to do with grades. I wonder if something went down in the locker room or at a practice regarding his refusal to enter the game that prompted the suspension.

  166. kev-1 February 6, 2012 9:21 pm

Didn’t Coach Gib sit Joston before too? Not suspended, but sat um down because of ego? And now look dat buggah.

  167. kev-1 February 6, 2012 9:24 pm

Boss: Mr. Kev-1, report to my office.

    Kev-1: Nope

Boss: Did you just say no?

    Kev-1: yup.

Boss: Kev-1, report to HR to sign your termination papers.

Some of these young student athletes need to learn to respect authority a little better. I don’t know the details of the Wiseman case, but in general, our young society has very little respect for elders and authority.

It is interesting that the Big 10 is now advocating for a 4-team playoff. The top 4 teams in the rankings (which means that BSU and TCU would have been in the playoffs while they were in the WAC and MWC) would make the playoffs, with the semifinal games played at the higher ranked school. Those 4 teams would not be eligible for BCS bowls, so this opens up 4 more spots in BCS bowl games. It seems like this would be significantly better for UH than the current system.

Sources told the Tribune that a Big Ten plan would remove the top four teams from the BCS bowl pool and have semifinal games played on the college campus of the higher seed. That would do away with the facade of “neutral” sites such as New Orleans, Miami and Pasadena, Calif., and ease travel concern for fans.

The championship game then could be bid out, like the Super Bowl.
