Outlook: The Warriors lost three starters, including team MVP David Veikune, off last year’s front four. Fonoti returns after starting every game last season. Meatoga was part of the DT rotation and could be headed for a breakout season. Injuries sidelined Savaiigaea last spring and again in the fall and he’ll have limited contact this spring. Among the newcomers, Rink is an intriguing prospect as a speed rusher.

Even the Pac-10 is considering ending the practice of having a football team stay in a hotel the night before a home game. However, they worry about how it could hurt the team.

Yet as worries about tight budgets flare, at-home hotel jaunts are one of several expenses a Pacific-10 Conference committee is considering for cuts.

From a distance, hotel stays might look as essential as gold-plated facemasks. But up close, they highlight the difficulty of untangling necessary expenses from the frivolous.

Oregon’s tab for the Eugene Hilton is about $5,800 per night, said Mike Bellotti, former UO football coach and future athletic director. For seven home games, that’s $40,600 — about the cost of two full in-state scholarships ($19,800 each) or a little more than one out-of-state scholarship ($33,300).

Asked whether he would vote to cut the hotel stays, Bellotti responded, “As a football coach or as an AD?”

Cutting the expense might be penny-wise and point-after foolish, he said. If the kicker stays out all night partying at his apartment rather than snoring sweetly in a quiet hotel, Oregon and the conference could lose the game and the millions they could make for a bowl appearance. And besides, $40,000 is a drop in Oregon’s $16 million football budget.

“There’s the recognition that we’re all going to have to cinch our belts a little bit across the board,” Bellotti said. “And there’s also the recognition that you don’t want to disadvantage the biggest revenue producers at your institution.”

  20. Garret May 18, 2009 4:59 am

The Pac-10 wants to get the hotel stays before a game banned nationally.

The idea is that the entire conference would abide by the same cost-cutting measures, if members can agree on them, said Jim Muldoon of the Pac-10. But they would prefer that such measures be adopted nationally, a process that can be time-consuming and complicated.

“You’re always careful about adopting things that could hurt you competitively,” Muldoon said. (See: recruiting, private jets, lobster tails, NCAA rules changes.)

There is no current NCAA legislation or conversation to ban home-game hotel stays, NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent said. That could leave the conferences on their own this fall.

One team in the state won’t lose any sleep over hotel stays: Portland State. As ever, the Vikings stay put before home games, thrifty before it was cool.

  21. Garret May 18, 2009 5:00 am

I’m glad that UCLA didn’t have a scholarship available to enable Zach Masch to go through their spring practice, as UH could have lost him since he thought he was going to be entering UH in January.

  25. djmitcho May 18, 2009 5:43 am

Good Morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone has a good week. I’m disappointed that I have to be inside my office instead of outside in the awesome weather we are going to have today.

  26. jm2375 May 18, 2009 5:51 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

    It’s Monday. ugh.

Welcome to Hawaii, Corey and Zach and all the other newcomers enrolling in SS-I. Have a great and productive summer.

My keeed has 2 more days of classes and then a play day on Wednesday and she’s pau school till August! Promises to be an eventful summer for her (and her parents) – 2 trips and a new puppy, then she starts high school!

  27. Kekoa May 18, 2009 5:59 am

Mahalo to Stretch & ST for the tickets to the bb game yesterday. I’m sorry to report that it was a very disappointing, yet the most unique game I’ve ever attended.

A-joe displayed his skills as a Tsaiko mentor for the visiting team!…Say What?!

At first I thought this boistrous support of the visitors was because he was employing a reverse Tsaikology Tstrategy. After observing the results of his very *loud* & vocal encouragement causing irreparable damage to our team, I knew that he had actually become the Benedict Arnold of Manoa Valley!

Rob25 was desperately digging thru her purse looking for her tournament darts to throw at him after a frantic cell phone call reporting his antics to A-Sports. Alas, it was all for naught as the pesky visitors rolled over our hapless Bowzo Boys on their own home field!

Koakane’s comment after the game summed up his frustration…“I felt like spray painting over the sign in the outfield that sez, *Protect This House!*

Thank goodness da Credit Union lady was there to soothe the Seniors as they received their accolades in a very drab ceremony at home plate. There were more than a few “intentional hugs & smooches” given her without the benefit of hand sanitizer available. At one point Myki noted that she nearly tripped while diving into a photo-op with the Seniors! What a trooper!

Meanwhile, after a (PGTTS) Post Game Tsaiko Therapy Session, at a nearby watering hole on S. King St., we were able to bring A-Joe back from the Green funk he was in. Too little…too late, tsai…

  28. Kekoa May 18, 2009 6:16 am

Sorry I started this Monday morning off with such a Li-Hing Mui story. Let me redeem myself by giving you a more positive, upbeat lesson in life to help kick start your work week.

A tourist in a rental car runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by HPD on a side street in Kaneohe. The tourist thinks that since he is a high priced lawyer from LA that he is smarter than the police officer and is certain that he has a better education then any cop in Hawaii

He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the police officer’s expense!!

Officer Smith says,” License and registration, please.”

    Lawyer says, “What for?”

Officer Smith says, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign.”

Lawyer says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”

Officer Smith says, “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration, please.”

    Lawyer says, “What’s the difference?”

Officer Smith says, “The difference is, you have to come to complete stop, that’s the law. License and registration, please!”

Lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.”

Officer Smith says, “Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir.”

The officer takes out his nightstick and starts beating the chit out of the lawyer and says, “So wot, brah, you like me stop,or just slow down?”

    Let’s be careful out there!

  29. d1島 May 18, 2009 6:22 am

    Great Morning All!

Adding my Mahalo to Stephen and Esme for game tix to yesterday’s BaseBows. Very nice seeing everyone; too bad we had to make a beeline outta there early to take care of some errands 🙁

Welcome to Zach Masch who looks like he can nicely fill in some big holes in the D-Line.

  30. d1島 May 18, 2009 6:23 am

    😆

    Good one Kekoa! 😀

  31. FloridaTed May 18, 2009 6:24 am

    Good morning, Tsaikos,

Zach Masch, now that’s one big boy there. He should be able to fill and plug quite a few wholes on the defense, me thinks.

    Kekoa
Good story. I think I will keep that in my back pocket for one of those days.

    Back to work.
    Be safe everyone,
    It was a crazy weekend.

  50. addahknowjoe May 18, 2009 7:58 am

    Mornin Gang!

I was shocked to see UH decide to along with my cheering and make Utah look great yesterday. Our pitching kept serving up batting practice for them. And the Bows kept giving the Wolverine’s outfield routine fly ball clinics all day. What’s disturbing is UH decided to deliver such a performance on their last game of the season.

    Shucks!

I can only hope they buckle down, man up and begin to make the most incredible run to a national title we’ve ever witnessed!

    Bring on Thursday!!

  51. Mr C May 18, 2009 8:08 am

    A joe
    How u?

    COLT WATCH!

“Is it just me or does the gunslinger in Zorn really seem to show up in the corners of his eyes and lips when he is asked to talk about Colt? Like he is suppressing a gut instinct to lavish praise on the youngster because he reminds Zorn of himself. Then, instead he catches himself and talks about the plays being left on the field. I could be wrong, but the kid has something, and the masses have tuned into it. He has a cult-like following.”

#44 MIH- the screen says all the coupons have been distributed and gives a chance to send an email to offer a friend a DISCOUNT coupon.

  55. Dirty Commish May 18, 2009 8:49 am

Commish dug up some highlights fof Zack Masch. And by dug up he means Googled the kid’s name…

    YouTube highlight video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjUbBnOvzVI

Of course it’s against other JUCO kids so we shall see how he projects to Division I Football.

In Pro News, Chucky will be joining MNF announce crew, thereby giving Kornheiser the boot. Never liked Kornheiser much but Commish doesn’t know what to expect from Gruden. Maybe he’ll blow up on Toricco and Jaws. That would be fun, actually.

  56. madeinhawaii May 18, 2009 9:05 am

    Liz..

Ah.. I see.. different coupon. How much is that thing anyway? The coupon I see is for $1.50 off.

  57. d1島 May 18, 2009 9:14 am

“Welcome to Monday Night Football. This is Mike Tirico. I’ll be doing tonight’s game solo due to a Production Meeting disagreement involving my partners earlier in the day.” 😆

  58. mctruck May 18, 2009 9:20 am

    Do the monster-Masch.

  59. Kazz May 18, 2009 9:20 am

I was working in the film room one night
When my eyes beheld an awesome sight
For this monster from his bench began to rise
    And suddenly to my surprise

    IT WAS MASCH
    MORE LIKE A MONSTER MASCH
    THE MONSTER MASCH
    HE WAS A RECRUITING SMASH
    WE BELIEVED IN MASCH
HE CAUGHT ON IN A FLASH
    WE BELIEVED IN MASCH
    THE MONSTER MASCH

From Manoa in the Oahu East
To the practice field where the Warriros feast
The players all came from their humble abodes
To get a jolt from his electrodes

    THEY SAW THE MASCH
    THEY SAW THE MONSTER MASCH
    THE MONSTER MASCH
    THEY SAW THE RECRUITING SMASH
    THEY BELIEVED IN MASCH
HE CAUGHT ON IN A FLASH
    THEY BELIEVED IN MASCH
    THE MONSTER MASCH

  60. Dirty Commish May 18, 2009 9:20 am

    *points above*

    lol

  61. mctruck May 18, 2009 9:22 am

    Watch Zach….Masch the offensive line.

  62. djmitcho May 18, 2009 9:34 am

After watching part of Masch’s video highlights, it seems that he has good technique in shedding the block and it looks like he has a high energy motor. Definitely a huge addition to the D-Line

  63. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 18, 2009 9:38 am

Kazz- Remember the song rewrites of the pre-Perfect Season? I think you’ve got this season off on a ROLL!

    😎

    HIHO!

  64. al May 18, 2009 9:38 am

d1…..what really happened was…i had gone down to visit the firstbase line concession stand. however, i got carried away and distracted talking to stretch, koakane, and then esme.

my phone rings with a reminder that the “concession stand” would close at the seventh inning stretch. its two out in the bottom of the sixth.

had to make a bee line down there before it closed.

  65. addahknowjoe May 18, 2009 9:54 am

Howzit Mr. C Not yet, but I going have to. A good friend of ours passed away over the weekend on the Big Island.

Gary and Darcy said Howzit and a big Mahalo for all that you’ve done for them!

  66. Kazz May 18, 2009 10:30 am

    WOAH!!! “RONIN KAWIKA ARANDA”! 😯

    THAT’S A WARRIOR’S NAME RIGHT THERE!!!

  67. Kazz May 18, 2009 10:31 am

    A-Joe,

I sent you an e-mail at your gmail account.

  68. al May 18, 2009 10:54 am

does he know the meaning of ronin?

  69. Kazz May 18, 2009 11:05 am

    Al,

I’m thinking when the majority of people think “Ronin” they’re just going to think of “Warrior/Samurai” and not what it literally meant during Japan’s feudal period.

  70. PowderPuff May 18, 2009 11:10 am

Morning, Tsaikos. I better get in now since it’s the only way I can crack 100. Sure can’t do it on the links just yet.

If I renewed my tickets already, do I still get the “Hello, this is Rodney Bradley…” call?

  71. Jason May 18, 2009 11:16 am

Congratulations to the Arandas! But yeah, Ronin? Unless they were thinking of the 47 Rōnin …

  72. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 11:24 am

I like incoming DT Zach Masch.

Zach isnt a bull-rusher, but he has what many of our DTs lack–the ability to disengage his blocker and move quickly laterally. He has a keen sense in smelling out the play and his ability to instantly shed blockers-in-grasp produces quick lateral movement to close holes or take aggressive pursuit angles.
Bottomline, Masch has quick hand-eye-feet instincts….much needed in MACs front alignment where our DTs are the focus and starting point of our middle.

If you can imagine a 6 3″ 295 lb Travis Laboy at DT–you’re getting the PIC.

  73. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 18, 2009 11:24 am

    Congrats to the Arandas!

#70 – me too… I guess I shoulda waited to renew so I could get “the call”,,, shucks!

MAHALO to COACH and MRS MCMACKIN who visited Kauai for the Visitor Industry Charity Walk! Shucks… I was fishin…

  74. al May 18, 2009 11:24 am

pp….we could call you and pretend we are colt brennan. would you like that?

  75. al May 18, 2009 11:26 am

    wf2….you seen him play?

  76. Jay May 18, 2009 11:30 am

    Good Day Tsaikos!

It’s been awhile since I’ve been on. Very busy now with son #1 now turning terrible 2 and son# 2 at 2months old.

Anyways, I had brought son #2 for his dreaded (for me) haircut and there, standing next to me was Coach Rolo with his son waiting for his son’s time on the chair. Real down to earth guy. He small talked with another daddy about last season’s Florida game and what they got going on for this year.

I hope to get on more regularly and get my Homey fix….haha…I forgot how to spell his name already.

  77. al May 18, 2009 11:37 am

    hey…..where homey?

  78. Kazz May 18, 2009 11:39 am

I think it would be a more effective approach to have the olinemen and d-linemen go from house to house to “pay one visit” to potential season ticket holders! 😆

  79. Kazz May 18, 2009 11:45 am

    Veni Manu

He’s also supposed to be joining UH in the summer too right?

  80. Kazz May 18, 2009 11:53 am

The BaseBOWS need to take a day to enjoy themselves. Like today. Grab da boys together, go to the beach and have a local-style potluck. Talk story, swim, surf or jump rock at Waimea (NO GET HURT!!!), whatever… it doesn’t matter.

Then come tomorrow practice like there is no tomorrow, because it only takes a loss or two and PAU.

The REAL BaseBOWS have seemingly disappeared over the past two months and we miss them.

  81. Ralph May 18, 2009 11:54 am

powderpuff you’re the statistician, why do you need tickets?

  82. al May 18, 2009 11:59 am

trap gave the team two days off in an effort to rekindle the spirit. he felt that they may have been burnt out this past series. he told them don’t come to the les until wednesday.

    might a good thing.

  83. Ralph May 18, 2009 12:03 pm

it all depends on what the players decide to do with their time on Monday and Tuesday…Can they show up energized or will they be tired out from having two days to play around

  84. PowderPuff May 18, 2009 12:09 pm

Ralph, yes…I don’t need tickets. But I’m a proud alum, and want to support my alma mater with season tickets.

  85. Jason May 18, 2009 12:11 pm

In green Mānoa valley, our alma mater stands … 😀

  86. kama krab May 18, 2009 12:16 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Congrats to Jason and the rest of the graduates of U.H. for a job well done.

Kazz, good stuff. If Zach is any good, we should play his song at the game. He looks like a wide body, but as Lee Corso says, “not so fast, my friend.” We have to wait and see if this guy can play. Look at Leatigaga. He came out of JC as an All-American, but so far he’s only re-shirted and hardly played. Then again, some guys what went to JC came in and did well. I guess it’s how they adjust to Division IA. Until then, there’s only hope, but let’s not get excited right now.

  88. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 12:26 pm

al. talked to several d1a coaches in the loop who scout that JUCO conference and are familiar w zack and i saw GAME film, not clips.
One of those coaches also scouted josh leonard, et al, when he was in juco.

Take a look at the clips and watch his hand-eye-feet movement–he has twinkle-toes and great balance.
Even when blocked, he slips away to move laterally and pursue.
Of course, playing at the D!A level is the blue-lithmus–so, gotta trust your eyes on talent.

  89. kama krab May 18, 2009 12:27 pm

    Wayne O,

I gotta agree with you but dam the boy is huge.

  90. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 12:50 pm

dunno about the two-day furlough but this is Coach Mike’s team to win or lose. His call.
I did hear Pal say as much, but that might have been exasperation speaking as a colorman not seeing very much color to talk about.
Personally, I would like to see live batting in the cage with the duce and off-speed stuff. That’s an area we need to improve.
Pitching is a unique equation that is peculiar to its mentor and student. That would be Coach Mike and his pitchers.
Its his call. You could tell he was searching for clues in the last game. Alexander threw well, location wise, but nevertheless was bombed by great hitting. He just isnt over-powering.
Whatever the situation, we need to sit back and let the baseball gods sort it out. Im feeling good about Thursday.

Jeb Stefan is the real deal but he is not over powering.
He throws well to location, has a brilliant mix and gets ahead on the pitch count. In his last outing against NMSU he went six without a decision yielded 5 hits and gave up 4 BBs with an equal amount of Ks.
As you all may recall Jeb fanned 12 bowboyz in his last appearance at the Les in 7.2 innings. Vinnie and McD looked terrible, 3Xs swinging at high fastballs to KO.
If we level off our bats and get our hands out in front of his pitches, our boyz can get to him early….im taking my cigars n rum to the LES.

  91. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 1:07 pm

Chris Leatigaga had knee problems and didnt start lifting weights earnestly until he arrived on campus at Manoa.
He was a free-wheeling DE in JUCO and was switched to DT by MAC.
Josh Leonard would be a better example. He was needed immediately, didnt red shirt, and was switched to DT from DE. Josh contributed.

As you all know our DEs arent prototypical JUCO DEs, but rather, they are oversized, outside LBs that go 220-265 lbs.

Masch played interior D-line in JUCO and will have some familiarity with the position when he joins the team this summer. Dunno if he will red-shirt, Im hoping.

  93. Dirty Commish May 18, 2009 1:13 pm

Commish commends Mr. Bradley in his effort to boost season ticket sales. However, he’s not exactly a household name, unfortunately.

Too bad Coach Mack can’t work the phones, “This is Coach Mack. Renew your tickets or I’m gonna be a real mad muther.”

Or even coach Rolo and Chad Owens, “Hey, remember that whoopin we put on BYU back in the day? You’re welcome, by the way. How’s about you return the love and get some of your friends together and buy some season tickets?”

Commish misses the days when the Warriors would light up folks for 50+ points… hopefully another year in the system and Greg The Man Bear Alexander will destroy opponents with a Warrior Artillery barrage of TDs.

  94. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 1:21 pm

when we were scoring 50 + JJ, receivers n QB were on the same page….plus we werent giving up 58 sacks.

Cant say the same with Ron Lee, our QBs and receivers…..and….can u say gordie?

  95. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 18, 2009 1:26 pm

    Dirty Commish,

Ill be more than happy to see those blowouts of the past Warrior teams become history in exchange for a balanced team on offense, defense, and special teams in every game.

We do that and another BCS bowl will be coming sooner than later.

  96. al May 18, 2009 1:27 pm

anybody watched the telecast of sunday’s game?
was that bomb by kolten wong fair or foul?

  97. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 18, 2009 1:28 pm

Don’t know exactly the oline will be improved come gametime this season but I am 808% confident they will be better thanks to Coach Shaw.

  98. al May 18, 2009 1:32 pm

yup, that 06 and 07 team had some talent, chemistry, talent at the skill level. the likes we may never see again. oh, did i say that we had a darn good oline as well?

i agree that the biggest impact may come from gordie shaw.

  99. Ralph May 18, 2009 1:33 pm

camera couldn’t follow path of ball on both occasions, Kolten and the UVS to left field…view of the ball landing foul but not the flight over the pole.

  100. UH Baseball Fan May 18, 2009 1:33 pm

    Hey Stephen,

So sorry, my blog is off the wall, but would you know if KFVE will be televise the WAC tournament?

    Thanks,

    UH Baseball Fan

  101. Ralph May 18, 2009 1:34 pm

don’t forget special teams, we gave up good field position too often and too many break away runs on KO and punts…

  102. al May 18, 2009 1:47 pm

ralph….our second biggest upgrade is chris tormey. special teams play will improve tenfold this year.

  103. Uce2 May 18, 2009 1:47 pm

Kekoa, what’s up with the Officer Fa’atai reference?

Why not use Officer Kekoa or Tahitinui, or Officer Mahulani? Why you gotta use a Samoan name?

Also, why pick on lawyers? You got something against them? Did a lawyer take away an ex girlfriend of yours?

  104. Stephen Tsai May 18, 2009 1:51 pm

    UH Baseball Fan:

According to K5, it’s up to UH to decide.
The WAC said it would OK K5 doing it, but UH now needs to decide if it will allow it. UH is checking ticket sales.
A decision will be made either late today or tomorrow.

  105. d1島 May 18, 2009 1:59 pm

Since the FTC will be shutting down the car warranty folks soon maybe UHAD can use their systems for telemarketing calls.

“According to our records your seat license has expired and you are at risk for missing out on the fun and excitement of the upcoming season….”

  107. letsgowarriors May 18, 2009 2:17 pm

yeah, the UH coaches actually told masch that he can be like josh leonard at UH. in addition to his elusiveness, josh l. is also very strong. looks like masch is following in his footsteps.

i would like to see masch play some DE in running situations as well.

  108. Kazz May 18, 2009 2:29 pm

    ***CORRECTION to #97***

I meant to say don’t know “HOW” improved the oline will be come gametime

Obviously they will be improved I just wanted to say by how much I don’t know.

  109. A-House May 18, 2009 2:35 pm

    ST:

IMHO, UH should at a minimum, telecast it to the other Islands for $5 per game via K5.

Good way to keep UH athletics in front of many fans and yet to be fans for it will be a long break to Fall practice.

“What say you? Join us! What say you?” hmmmmmmmmm, that sounds a lot like Lord of the rings. I would have used the character’s name, but forgot it and probably don’t know how to spell it – hehe.

  110. BG May 18, 2009 2:36 pm

  112. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 2:38 pm

eh, Kekoa, I agree with Uce2, in your joke, the cop should have been named John Q Taxpayer, and the driver should have been our Samoan Mayor.

  113. BG May 18, 2009 2:50 pm

Talked about missed opportunities for the BaseBows…two major Sat nite crowds and two awful losses. Could have really pumped up attendance for the WAC tourny. Saw a team that looked like it was really pressing, IMO. A lot of swinging at bad pitches and pitches that couldn’t find the mark. I really agree with Trap’s giving two days off. What might be better would be a group session with those sports psychologists that used to work with the basketball team. Really need to get rid of the negative/defeatist energy and tightness and get them into a loose, confident atmosphere.

  114. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 2:58 pm

lgw, u just hit on a sore spot–our DEs on run D needs to improve as much as our safety play. last year it was embarrassing at times. Our boyz make effort but they are simply overmatched with overwhelming size and opponents exploit it!

  115. Kazz May 18, 2009 3:07 pm

    What the heck?

Was Kekoa’s joke at post #25 edited?

  116. LizKauai [Unite and Conquer] May 18, 2009 3:22 pm

“when we were scoring 50 + JJ, receivers n QB were on the same page….”

    When we BELIEVED.
It was a special time- minds, hearts and souls over matter.
But it collapsed at the SB when coach “left”.

Now we are working from the bottom up… form, function, and reps to get to that transcendent state where all become one in purpose. Different approach but achievable, imho.

  117. Kekoa May 18, 2009 3:30 pm

Wow folks, it’s just a joke!…Change the names if you want, I don’t care! Use mine, use yours, use your mama! Sheesh!

Everything has to be so politically correct now days. No wonder we can’t all get along…everybody is so damned sensitive to this or that, they miss the funny part!

wf2…Mufi as the driver/lawyer…that would be a real challenge for the police officer!…Bwhahaha!

  118. Jay May 18, 2009 3:42 pm

Mufi will probably sing a song about it and give it away at his next fundraiser.

  119. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 3:50 pm

Im going to the Les on Thursday and dragging mia moglie and her feline diletantes. They dont understand baseball and that makes it perfect to designate them to make the gunga din refill-runs.

“At least in my lifetime this will be the last WAC T played in Hawaii”.
    It should be an event.
Go to the park, enjoy and hope Jobu shows up.
It can happen…..the summer can be boring unless you are a PGA Tour junkie and have plans to go to Bethpage and Warick Hills 🙂

The last time the Rainbows hosted the WAC tournament was back in the early ’90s when we had great teams that won the WAC championship and went to the NCAA Regionals. Remember players like Blanchette, Ishigo, Cabbab, Karl, Otani, Yuen, et al. Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend this year’s tournament so all you Tsaikos cheer extra loud for me!

    Go Rainbows!

  126. Kazz May 18, 2009 4:15 pm

It seems that after high school and college, the summer is like any other stretch of time with nothing happening… unless you are a HEAVY MLB fan. NOTHING.. *Ahem* N-O-T-H-I-N-G is happening and WORST of all, the stands at Les Murakami, the Wahine Softball Stadium, Aloha Stadium, and the Stan Sheriff Center will be silent. 🙁

Regardless of how far the BaseBOWS can go after the WAC tournament, the lower campus of Manoa will lay still, with the exception of student athletes roaming around and going about their business, but it is the end of the UH sports season no matter how you look at it.

Emotions and questions will fill the summer air of 2009.

    The emotions:
-excitement for a newly rejuvinated Warrior football offense.
-the savoring of another successful WAC season for the Wahine volleyball team.
-the hope for what seems like a new start for another journey to a WAC title and NCAA regional appearance for Wahine softball.
-the cautious hesitation of the 3rd year of Bob Nash’s tenure as the men’s basketball coach.
-the yearning for another star in the making with Jonas Umlauft.

    The questions:
-Who’s the new Warrior volleyball and Wahine basketball head coach?
-How will the young Warrior football defense fair in 2009?
-Will Coach Trap be given another chance with an extension to his contract?
-Who’s left for Coach Nash to secure?
-Can the Wahine softball team find their bats on a more consistent basis?
    .
    .
    .
    AND

-Who’s gonna replace Shannon Dresser as the baton girl? 😯

These are the emotions that will fill the minds of UH sports fans, these thoughts will either tide us over until August or will leave us mentally un-balanced just in time to release the tension at Aloha Stadium in the fall!!! 😈

Ummm no. The joke would have abruptly ended as the man that was pulled over has now gone missing…

Fast forward about 15 years and the remains of the missing will be found. Then this Mr. Smith, who is now retired, will be flown in from Aspen for questioning.
    .
    .
    .
    NOW THAT’S A JOKE! 😎

  129. Smith Clan May 18, 2009 4:27 pm

WAIT A GOL DURN MINUTE. Why does #28 refer to “Officer Smith”. Does someone have it in for “Smith’s”?!!! We are fine, upstanding, freedom loving Americans through and through. Why are we being mentioned in the context of a joke? Is this some kine bigoted…bigotted…bigo…..some kine prejudiced blog? Huh?!!!

If you no like hurt anybody’s feelings, the post should read…

A person in a rental car runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by the police on a side street. The person thinks that since he is a high priced person from a county that he is smarter than the police officer and is certain that he has a better education.

He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the police officer’s expense!!

Officer says,” License and registration, please.”

    Person says, “What for?”

Officer says, “You didn’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign.”

Person says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”

Officer says, “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration, please.”

    Person says, “What’s the difference?”

Officer says, “The difference is, you have to come to complete stop, that’s the law. License and registration, please!”

Person says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.”

Officer says, “Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir.”

The officer takes out his nightstick and starts beating the chit out of the person and says, “So wot, brah, you like me stop,or just slow down?”

Now, THAT’S FUNNY…HoHoHo. By the way, my cousin with HPD said he was ticked off and was going post too.

  130. Mr. Person May 18, 2009 4:34 pm

Ms Person would like to know exactly why the Smith Clan believes that only a “he” Person could be smarter and high-priced.

  131. oldie May 18, 2009 4:41 pm

  132. cop May 18, 2009 4:45 pm

Eh! Why you picking on officers of the law? Why don’t you just say it was a second person making a citizen’s arrest? No pick on us!

  133. Smith Clan May 18, 2009 4:47 pm

    Mr. Person

Dat’s a real good question! And the ansa is…in a bland, politically correct (but devoid of humor) statement, to refer to a “high-priced” “she” would bring the wrath of the high mucka mucka call girls. No? That wouldn’t be “sporting”. Hehehehe

  134. Avis May 18, 2009 4:55 pm

Please leave us in the rental car industry out of the current discourse. We have a fine reputation and do not want our fleet of vehicles implicated in any unlawful activity.

    Thank you.

  135. Kazz May 18, 2009 4:56 pm

IT’S TIME TO PUT AN END TO THIS NON-SENSE!!!

A man and a woman that both have the ethnicities of every single living person on earth come across, up and down, down to up left to right, right to left, diagonal NW to SE and SE to NW, diagonal SW to NE and NE to SW, in a circular motion to the left and a circular motion to the right another man and woman that ALSO have the ethnicities of every single living person on earth and they all continue to share pleasantries and the two pairs of human beings proceed to go about their business in a joyful manner.

    Is everybody happy now? 😆

  136. Kazz May 18, 2009 4:57 pm

    Avis,

Oh you fleet accounts are quite interesting indeed! No defaults now! 😎

  137. letsgowarriors May 18, 2009 4:58 pm

mack will take the trade off, getting runned over for speed on the field. im actually fine w/ that for the most part. i wouldnt mind him implementing more packages on D though, where the DEs on running situations are beefier than the norm. esp. this year when we’ll be playin a lot of run oriented teams.

  138. Person of the World May 18, 2009 4:59 pm

    Kazz,

    😆

    Now THAT was funny!

  139. madeinhawaii May 18, 2009 5:02 pm

-Who’s gonna replace Shannon Dresser as the baton girl?

Man.. I hope that’s not up to the same panel that’s selecting the Women’s Basketball Coach. Otherwise.. pack it in.. and forget it, already..

  140. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 5:10 pm

lgw, actually Im not OK with it….it hasnt worked and it wont without a strong secondary. I wont name the player but I actually saw our DE get driven 15 yards into the endzone on an off-tackle play last year on the road. We were in a redzone D and expecting a run. No posse to the rescue…ouch!

  141. baton girl selection committee May 18, 2009 5:11 pm

We will use a proven process based on telephone interviews.

  142. BG May 18, 2009 5:13 pm

    Hey Kekoa!

I missed out on the jokes competition, but I got one for the “It’ll Nevah Happen” category.

One night, Jason was celebrating his “adulthood” by chillin’ at a classy local night club. Soon, he spots a gorgeous young lady beautifully dressed in a stylishly low cut cranberry colored cocktail dress and sporting diamond accents on her earrings and pendant sitting alone at the bar. After eyeing her over a couple of vodka Thrillers, Jason gets up and casually saunters over and sits down facing her in the next seat. With his deceptively innocent smile, he asks her enthusiastically, “Have you heard what people having been saying about 60 second sex?” Slightly taken aback, she replies in surprise, “er..no…” Jason brightens and instantly replies, “Got a minute?!!”

    Bwaaahaahahaha

  143. BG May 18, 2009 5:16 pm

Dang…forgot to add…”later, they go arm in arm to cheer on the BaseBows.” There. Brought it back to sports!

  144. letsgowarriors May 18, 2009 5:26 pm

as a mid major, i feel we have a hard recruiting a 6-4 280 DE w/ 4.7 speed. what id like to see is having a run based package for the red zone and short yardage where we have bigger DEs. it could even be the quicker DTs, like say a haku, masch, meatoga.

  145. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 5:27 pm

like anything else u need talented personnel to fit the system in play.
then u can make fair appraisal whether the system has merit or ur coachin just sukz.
it will be interesting to see the impact Coach Tormey brings to sumzero….im not looking for miracles here, just sayin coachin matters.

  147. FloridaTed May 18, 2009 5:42 pm

Giving equal talent, Coaching absolutely matters, on every level, but really great coaching shows itself against superior talent. I hope in 2009 we’ll have the latter.

  148. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 5:43 pm

currently we r in 4-3 system about 1/3 of the time and that scheme will come off the edge, exposing its perimeter.
    need strong backside support.
the key in this D, as I have said many times are your DTs.
They must hold-the-line and have quality athleticism to move laterally. Im hoping masch-types or the iron triangle provide that quality in the future….we shall see.
MAC talks about his DTs having a “push” to create lanes for our LBs to dog. I like ’em to be able to play HITLER too–check n split. keep the O off balance in their blocking assignments.

  149. FloridaTed May 18, 2009 5:44 pm

I honestly expect 10 + wins this year

  150. FloridaTed May 18, 2009 5:50 pm

This year we’ll definately find out how good our talent is among the players and among the coaches. The coaches must deliver, last year was a learning process for everybody.

  151. madeinhawaii May 18, 2009 6:00 pm

    Florida Ted,

I figure 10+, too. But I will settle for a 9 win season if the Warriors are in every lost game till the very last minute. Sort of like the year before the undefeated regular season.

  152. Kazz May 18, 2009 6:14 pm

    Dear BaseBOWS,

You guys are good. Earlier our Wahine softballers flirted with elimination and survived one round, but fell to a very good team. Just like the Wahine, you folks showed heart at times, but honestly I don’t know where the “MANA” in the team is right now. You guys are good and you have to play like it. There is no “next time” or down time this weekend.

You are all home and we will be there to cheer for you. You have given us many great memories and feelings this past season, but lately you folks have lost the “spring in your step”, the “mac salad in your plate lunch”, the “wasabi in the shoyu”, etc…

I hope you folks took this time off away from baseball to have some fun with your fellow ‘Bows. There is no greater time in a young athlete’s life than the college athletic experience. Some of you have your degrees and the rest are on their way. The world is sitting in the palm of your hands and it’s up to you to shape the future.

For Jayson Kramer, Jared Alexander, Shane Hoey, Land-O Hernandez, and Ryan Morford, you guys need to look at one another and decide how you want to go out this time around. The team needs your leadership right now.

LaTech had our number last time around, but this is a tournament and this is where the lights are brighter in that stadium than they have ever been before in your college careers. Don’t let the lights go out with a whimper.

IF YOU MUST GO DOWN, GO DOWN SWINGING AND TAKING EVERY INNOCENT BYSTANDER WITH YOU!!! DON’T GO OUT INTO THE MANOA NIGHT WITHOUT SAYING SOMETHING!!! DON’T LAY DOWN FOR ANYONE!!!

But that’s all pointless. No matter. YOU’LL WIN IT ALL! You must believe this. If you think you’re defeated then you already are. If you think you can win, you’re halfway there. Just believe.

Just play like you know you all can.

    Yes, you guys are good.

  153. warriorfanny2 May 18, 2009 6:17 pm

10 wins…..gotta luv you for being so positive bud….but rem, u build expectations too.
    Here are the variables:
    1. beginning of camp role call–100% enrolled. (dont trust those upper manoa bureaubrats)
    2. OL 8-week summer training-cycle is successful for those that remain in Hawaii. They werent in shape last year.
    3. Tormey and Gordie have a zerosum impact–we r hurting here.
    4. Receivers learn Ron Lee’s route-system and his O-staff fully exploits the prodigious talent on this unit–dont blow it, just develop what you stockpiled.
    5. Green n Chizz r as advertised–need some concentrated juice.
    6. 2 decent safeties, ditto for CBs– a strong backside allows MAC to gamble off the front-edge.
    7. MAC wears one lei during the game–he looks more like a Hawaii football HC.

*7-6 would be expected….anything else is considered plus(s)and portends a positive growth trend for our program.

Before we get too deeply into predicting next season’s record, I’d like to point out how sport blogs tend to separate into two camps…the analysts and the fan(atics). Of course there are subsets that overlap. You seem like an analyst in that you balance fine details in order to form a logical conclusion(s). On the other hand, I’m a fan (with closet analyst tendencies). Logic need not apply when I’m predicting the season! 14-0 is always my prediction. I save on personal anquish by using this optimistic view. Have I been “right”. Heck no! For a fan, accuracy is not a necessary criterion. When I rendered my last salute and about faced to walk into retirement, I left my need “to be right” behind.

So what’s the point? The point is that it’s a lost cause to argue logic with a “fan” who doesn’t use logic. It’s just pure emotion in backing our favorite Warriors. Better to use logic with another analyst. Watching a argument between an analyst and fan has about the same value as a muslim and protestant trying to convert each other. LOL

Hope you convinced yourself of whatever u r trying to say.
I have no clue other than you r retired and left your need “to be right” behind, as you state.
Yet, u leave a left-handed message on being “right” about logic and fans vs analyst; conversion and Muslims vs Christians.

    As a general remark,
I Dunno if you watched President Obama’s address to the 2009 Notre Dame class in Southbend on Sunday but perhaps you should goggle and read his statements on building common ground around people, cultures or beliefs that are polarized in differences.

  166. Garret May 18, 2009 8:03 pm

Note about how the Browns are looking for an inside LB and are looking at Veikune or Maiava to fill that need

In the draft, the first defensive player picked was David Veikune. A defensive end at Hawaii, the assumption was Veikune would play outside linebacker for the Browns. His specialty is rushing the passer, but the Browns have been looking at him at both inside and outside linebacker. They want someone next to D’Qwell Jackson (they love the guy) to stop the run. So they also took Kaluka Maiava from USC in the fourth rounder, another inside linebacker.

  167. Garret May 18, 2009 8:05 pm

Interesting note about how Browns coach Mangini’s former team converted a college DE into an inside LB that has had quite a good career.

Cleveland wants to improve against the run and at 6’2/257 Veikune would be an imposing inside ‘backer. Eric Mangini’s old team, the Patriots, made a similar move with Tedy Bruschi at the start of his career. Like Bruschi, Veikune played end in college. Veikune could compete with Eric Barton at ILB

Already, the conference decided against annual football and basketball coaches meetings that have traditionally accompanied the AD meetings. Everything from printed conference media guides to home football teams staying in hotels before games could come under review.

Anyone ever watch that show on A&E “Paranormal State”?

It’s a reality show/documentary that follows several Penn State students that investigate paranormal activity. Each 30 minute episode involves one case, usually hauntings.

Interesting show to say the least. However, for a TV show that is trying to either prove or disprove the validity of paranormal activity, it is REALLY over-produced with sound effects.

    Entertaining nontheless! 🙂

    ***Off-Topic*** … well sort of…

    WWE vs… AC Carter’s Nuggets??? 😯

Nuggets, WWE in smackdown over arena confict

    By BRIAN MAHONEY

Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers are scheduled to be at the Pepsi Center in Denver next Monday night.

Problem is, so are John Cena and a bunch of wrestlers — and they called it first.

World Wrestling Entertainment said it is booked at the arena for an episode of Monday Night Raw, the same night the Nuggets are slated to host the Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals.

WWE chairman Vince McMahon told The Associated Press he doesn’t believe there was “any malice, just ineptness,” on the part of Kroenke Sports, which owns the team and the building, but can’t tolerate the company “just simply throwing us out on our ear.”

Without a quick resolution, McMahon plans to send his production and equipment trucks to Denver.

“That’s what we intend to do,” he said. “We’re going to show up.”

WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman said the organization secured the Pepsi Center last Aug. 15 and has already sold more than 15,000 tickets for the event. He says the organization expects a sellout, with tickets ranging from $20 to $70.

McMahon blamed Kroenke for not believing his team was good enough to still be playing in mid-May.

“The fans in Denver had a lot more faith in making the playoffs than the owner,” he said in a phone interview from Louisville, where Raw was taking place later Monday night.

Denver is usually done with basketball by now. The Nuggets had lost in the first round five straight years, but as the No. 2 seed in the West are in the conference finals for the first time since 1985.

The Nuggets referred comment to the NBA, which handles scheduling during the playoffs. Kroenke Sports also had no comment.

However, the league is leaving it up to the team and the WWE to figure things out.

“The Nuggets and the WWE understand that the date of Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals cannot be changed,” NBA senior vice president Mike Bass said. “We are confident that the Pepsi Center and the WWE will resolve their scheduling conflict.”

Zimmerman said the Pepsi Center confirmed in March with the WWE that the organization wanted to keep the May 25 date, and sent a contract on April 15 — the final night of the regular season — which WWE signed and returned. Tickets went on sale April 11.

The conflict didn’t arise until Sunday, when the Lakers beat the Houston Rockets in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals. Had the Rockets won, Denver would have had home-court advantage in the next round, hosting Games 1 and 2 and putting the May 25 game in Houston.

As of Monday afternoon, the schedule on the Pepsi Center’s Web site listed WWE for 6:30 p.m. local time and Western Conference finals Game 4 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the wrestling event could still be purchased online.

McMahon said he couldn’t guess how much he would make from the show, but that canceling wasn’t easy because of how much is involved in moving his equipment, plus filling its obligated time slot on USA Network. Litigation is likely — but he plans to be putting on a card.

“When you do have a date, you plan everything around it,” he said, adding, “we may be holding an event in a parking lot somewhere.”

On the topic of football wins,

I feel that if they can blend all the young talent we have on both offense and defense, I feel that we have a chance to have a 11-2 regular season and will come in second in the WAC. I say this because even though we have Boise at home there is still that hesitance in me saying that the boyz have to prove that they can hang with Boise. If they can pull another one off at home against Boise then we might be looking at another special season, but of course it is way to early to tell. As we good through the first half of our schedule and into the La Tech we will see what we are made of.

One more post before sleep time,

    To the BaseBows:

This season has been one of up’s and down’s, but I feel all-in-all it has been a very strong season. Now it is time to suck it up one more time and show the people of Hawaii that you guy’s have one more strong run left in you. As a former baseball player myself, I now the rigors of a long season and the up’s and down’s that go along with it, but it is during this time that you muster up the courage and go out there and do it one more time. It is during these times that injuries are just in your head and being tired is just a figure of speak. There is no more tomorrow and tomorrow is today. So I say this now with a great since of pride; thank you for all the hard work that you have put forward throughout the season and win or lose, this season has been a very fun season to be a part of. Keep up the hard work and I just hope that you boyz have one more strong push left in you.

God bless all you guyz and go get um. Make the state proud.

    Sincerely,

    Kamakani Kane
