Game week: On the clock

Sure, we’ve been running a countdown clock since Warrior World opened for business a month ago. (We promise, despite the Warrior Beat’s “mysteriously” vanishing posts, we’ve been at the new site for a month. Honest.)

But with a day to go, we’re actually watching the clock. (Plus, with the vanishing posts, we had lost track of time.)

Countdown to kickoff.

* * * * *

The Warriors went through this week’s final full practice yesterday. Because of training camp, the Warriors were able to use three days last week to focus exclusively on Washington. (In a usual game week, there are only three full practices to work on the game plan.) The four extra practices last week enabled the Warriors to install the game plan earlier and lighten the physical contact yesterday. It’s been a long preseason. Being fresh — and healthy — is key at this point.

* * * * *

The No. 2 quarterback’s job will be filled situationally. Taylor Graham and Jeremy Higgins have received equal reps this week. Consider reps as four-slice pie. Ikaika Woolsey gets two slices, and Graham and Higgins each get one.

* * * * *

There actually is a nice quarterback competition on the scout team between Max Wittek, who officially transferred from USC on Monday, and Beau Reilly. Through last week Wednesday, the Warriors had not set scout teams, so Reilly was getting regular work. Witten has demonstrated a powerful and accurate arm; Reilly is a little bit more mobile.

Reilly certainly is a quick thinker. As noted earlier, Reilly won a freestyle rap contest among teammates a couple weeks ago.

* * * * *

Nick Nelson has been a quiet surprise in the preseason, emerging as the third cornerback. When Ne’Quan Phillips moves to nickelback, Nelson plays corner opposite Dee Maggitt. But another freshman, Daniel Lewis, also has played well. Lewis received a lot of reps at safety yesterday. After he signed with UH, Lewis was mentioned as a possible running back. That might be a possibility in the future, but not this year. Lewis has played his way into a role at safety this season.

* * * * *

Diocemy Saint Juste will return the first kickoff, but Dee Maggitt continues  to make a push for that job. Maggitt seeks to follow former Warrior Mike Edwards’ role as corner/returner.

* * * * *

Special teams coordinator Chris “Demo” Demarest is given the freedom to use any player on the roster. The caveat — the so-called Demo rule — is a starter cannot be on more than two special-team units. Even Joey Iosefa is used as a blocker on kickoff returns.

* * * * *

KCC’s culinary students will prepare the Warriors’ dinner tonight. Private donors paid for the ingredients.

* * * * *

Those large, purple-clad people visiting Pearl Harbor today? I think they’re here for some sort of an event tomorrow afternoon.

We’ll check the clock.

  22. hatakeman August 29, 2014 9:06 am

It appears Chris Petersen’s departure has made a difference at Boise St. Their offense yesterday didn’t look like a Boise St. team, but perhaps the Ole Miss defense had a lot to do with it. And Texas A&M really took apart a Steve Spurrier No. 9 ranked South Carolina team. I thought that was totally unexpected.

  23. ponojr August 29, 2014 9:22 am

    Pomai

    UH 17 – UW 14

  24. boolakanaka August 29, 2014 9:23 am

Hata–Ole Miss actually has a bunch of talent, I read that they have, I think, ten people on the team that were in the top 25 recruits at their position. That’s a bunch of elite athletes….

  25. Shoko August 29, 2014 9:33 am

If Demo can use any player on roster, he should tell Chow he wants to use Woolsey on kick or punt returns. 😉

  27. Andrew August 29, 2014 9:37 am

    24.

Yeah Ole Miss has had the one of the top recruiting classes the last few years. I guess that kind of goes unnoticed though being in a conference with Bama, LSU, and Florida.

  28. RainbowCliff August 29, 2014 9:39 am

    Aloha Tsaiko Nation !

On this 56th birthday I can only say two words “thank you” !

Just an HONOR to be alive, happy and ALWAYS striving to be the best that I can be. Having Hawaii still with me after 33 years when my eligibility expired is truly surreal with nothing but ALOHA to you good folks of Hawaii Nei !

So happy knowing that I have given back to this wonderful place in which the people and fans gave me so much more. Celebration been happening this LA morning as students from Hunington Park sang happy birthday to me as I taught their computer literacy class. This evening I and Mrs. Rainbow Cliff will be dining at Tony On The Pier in Redondo Beach as my tennis association has paid for the bill eating some great sea food and drinking their famous mai tais !

So bless to show COMPASSION and CARE for God’s wonderful people. Have a GREAT day good folks to the “Warrior World” as I will be cheering for our Warriors tomorrow night, hopefully can stand up after a GREAT night of celebration !

Always the best and continue cheering for Hawaii as it is truly the best game in town !

    Go Bows, Go Warriors !

What happened to Lawrence Lagafuaina? Is he on the team?

  41. Shoko August 29, 2014 10:26 am

Seems attendance increase a little after initial reports of 28,000 was being projected for this weekends game. Remember when a PAC-12 team would have an attendance closer to 40,000.

“The University of Hawaii athletics department said football ticket sales for the season opener against the Washington Huskies reached 31,000. Aloha Stadium holds 50,000. ”

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  57. cocobean August 29, 2014 11:52 am

#43. That’s good to hear. The more the merrier.

I see UH merchandise sold all over town. I bought a couple of shirts from Sam’s. I’m wondering if UHAD made any money from my purchase. I know there must be some licensing fee but I’m wondering if UHAD gets a cut from each individual item sold.
It seems to me when you take all the various outlets that sell UH merchandise as whole the selection and price is way better than the H Zone. If UHAD only gets revenue from licensing fees for merchandise sold outside of it’s store than in a way it’s licensing competition for the store.

  58. Whats Up August 29, 2014 11:58 am

While I believe Hawaii will play inspired home field Football. And both teams are going through some transistion with QB question marks and new head coach/coaching staff (Washington) and new defensive coordinator (Hawaii). With Washington losing so much talent on offense like QB Price, TE Jenkins and RB Sankey that will give Hawaii a chance to stay in the game until the end.

But Chris Peterson knows Hawaii very well and will pull out a closer than expected victory at Aloha Stadium.

    Pomai:

    Washington 44
    Hawaii 37

  59. Boolakanaka August 29, 2014 12:01 pm

And the award for best name on the Udub squad goes to Psalm Wooching from Hawai’i island.

  60. cocobean August 29, 2014 12:20 pm

DPK. You can only wish that’ll happen. This game is between two of the most anal retentive football coaches in the country. Their attention to detail is legendary.
Heard a radio interview with a UDub sportswriter. One of the things that came up was the difference between the old and new coach. The guy went on to say Sark was more of a players coach and would let little things slide a bit. He said the new guy was more detailed oriented such that he had scripted how the players should use the 5 1/2 hour plane ride…so much time studying the play book, resting and eating.

We all know Chow approach to details. The latest example was at their only stadium practice he made sure the team rehearsed how they would enter the playing field.

  61. cocobean August 29, 2014 12:26 pm

What’s Up. UDub’s QBs may be the Xfactor. They’re all virgins when it comes to throwing a pass in a D1 game. You never know how virgins will react the first time.
At least our guys are already broken in.

  62. Kapahulu August 29, 2014 12:35 pm

I remember listening to the 1973 UH vs Washington game on the radio.
My High School classmate Harold Stringert played on that team.
What an outstanding and exciting game.

In 2007 when UW played UH here at Aloha Stadium, it was raining pretty hard.
I remember loaning my extra poncho to Colt Brennan’s Dad. Great comeback!

The last time the UH Football Team played UW on the road, I was in the stands.
Good game, but we came up a little short. Proud of our effort.

I will be there in the stands tomorrow at Aloha Stadium cheering our Warriors to victory!

    Go Warriors.
Key to the game………………Warrior Defense! That will excite our fans!

  63. st. anthony trojan August 29, 2014 12:53 pm

Happy birthday to the three…’amigos’ (Kifi, Cliff, Pomai) on here…may u all have a many more…as you get closer to our ‘birthday leader’ TM….

Good luck to our ‘ladies to night…n hope the announcers there …remind the crowd…that to go n support our ‘football boys’ so we can all try to controls ‘andrews’ blood pressure…but do agree with him…that is ‘blood boiling’ flagrant error of omission on announcers part…shame…shame…

And thanks A-House for all you do…..

    IMUA RAINBOW WARRIORS…

  64. hatakeman August 29, 2014 1:04 pm

Boola and Andrew, thanks for the feedback about Ole Miss’ recruiting. I haven’t been tracking the SEC, but to see Ole Miss play as it did was a surprise. Kinda makes the SEC a conference one to follow this season. Its was boring with focus on Alabama, Alabama, Auburn and Johnny Manziel all the time while the rest saying how good they were by riding the coattails of just a few.

  65. Derek August 29, 2014 1:06 pm

There goes Bobby Curran again. He chose UW to cover the 21.5 point spread against Hawaii in the Star Advertiser football fever contest. The actual Vegas line is around -17 now. What a guy. This is the voice of the Rainbow Warrior radio broadcast. He’s got no confidence in Norm Chow, the coaches, the players, etc., the whole football program and he’s showing that publicly. I don’t think What does Norm Chow say about this? This doesn’t sit well with me and it seems very odd. If I was the radio voice of the football team, if anything I would show more faith in the team. And the season haven’t even started. I can see if Hawaii has lost a couple of games badly and he took another team with a big spreak. But, come on! It just doesn’t look good. But, whatever, to each his own.

  66. Z August 29, 2014 1:17 pm

Washington State vs Rutgers attendance was only 30,925. This was at Seahawks stadium. According to cougar AD it may be the last time they play there. Even teams on the east coast like VT looking for ways to bring fans to the stadium like creating a fun zone for kids.

  67. A-House August 29, 2014 1:22 pm

    Good afternoon Tsaikos!!!!

Happy Birthday Pomai, Pride, and Rainbow Cliff!!!

Don’t forget to stop by tomorrow’s T-gate at Cabana A. Hope to see you there….even lurkers…come on down for food, fun, football, and friendship… 🙂

  70. st. anthony trojan August 29, 2014 1:57 pm

Derek.. you are so right.. n sum on here are ask.. why UH has approval of announcers for oceanic…this is the reason… better to be tactful n he just keep his ‘yapper’ shut n no make prediction.. but just ask his ‘wishes’…

in my opinion..even me no can hear him…he should not be the voice of the RAINBOW WARRIORS…. sumthing should be done… n should have in the contract..that contract can be ‘yanked’ for reason…wonder whose wise decision was that..n if was only done for ‘kala’ cuz they are in red…

  71. kawika49 August 29, 2014 2:04 pm

They need a Family section in one of the end Zones…No booze or foul language allowed.

  72. st. anthony trojan August 29, 2014 2:09 pm

SHOKO… what was the top prices for all schools for 50 yard line seats…please…just like to compare.. next time ur manila me buy u a ‘big mac’ certified meat… no dog….he he he… n no ‘cat’ from china now he he he

  73. cocobean August 29, 2014 2:12 pm

Derek, maybe he was influenced by your pick.

    I joke of course.

  74. ponojr August 29, 2014 2:14 pm

    #71

Do other college stadiums around the nation have designated family sections?

  75. Buffoman August 29, 2014 2:16 pm

#71 That is a terrific idea and a platform to market the new “Family Fan Friendly Game Section”. They could do all kinds of things with pre-game entertainment for the youngsters, food, etc..

Start with a section and continue to open up as the section grows.

I like that idea, although my kids are now grown up.

  76. chawan_cut August 29, 2014 2:21 pm

    tick tock tick tock,
    26 hours and counting….

#71 At least it would be Mormon and Military Family friendly. Also for the older ones.

  78. boya_jr August 29, 2014 2:24 pm

Getting that feeling. The sound of the marching band. The Fall season is when I drink the majority of the alcohol. During a 4 hour game, I can drink a lot.

  79. kawika49 August 29, 2014 2:25 pm

Maybe, a ladies section for the photographers out there…he he he. We get plenny seats.

  86. Derek August 29, 2014 3:08 pm

Cocobean, the difference is I am a regular fan. Nobody cares about my picks. I sent in my own Football Fever pick and I took Hawaii and the +21.5 points. It’s the first game, who knows what’s going to happen. Nobody knows. We can only go by what are the past records are and the returning starters and the depth charts. There are always surprises, like yesterday when A&M’s QB torched South Carolina. I didn’t see that coming. It’s a good bet that Hawaii will be highly motivated against a PAC 12 team and will play hard. Yeah, my head says UW will win, but I think Hawaii will cover the 21.5. I hope I’m wrong and I hope Hawaii will play an unbelievable game and somehow win this game. That would be something. Curran, his pick speaks volumes. I give credit to Larry Price and Michael Perry. When Appen was coaching and they were losing every game, they always picked Hawaii to win. They knew Hawaii wasn’t going to win, but it was their wish for Hawaii would win.

  87. Lawaia August 29, 2014 3:09 pm

Coach Chow, wishing you all the best for tomorrow’s game. Na Koa Anuenue play with passion and heart and the wins will come. IMUA

  88. wafan August 29, 2014 3:11 pm

Looks like a beautiful day in Hawai’i . . . at least on the local news sports update.

    Kimpira!

  89. cocobean August 29, 2014 3:27 pm

I couldn’t resist posting what I did. I know where you’re coming from and pretty much understand your feelings. But I did see some humor in what your predicted and what you posted. My intent was not to ruffle your feathers.

  90. cocobean August 29, 2014 3:28 pm

    Derek. #89 is for you.

  91. tarheel warrior August 29, 2014 3:38 pm

Looking forward to a great win by the gang tomorrow. Go rainbow warriors!! UH 21 UDUB 14.

  92. Buffoman August 29, 2014 3:41 pm

#81 and in that way you start slowly building you base for future fans of the team. I believe we’ve lost a generation of fans and so your idea to start the rebuilding process makes sense. Even at a reduced price for a child, you still have revenue by putting a fresh bun in a once empty seat.

Smart, now if they would only give your idea some thought. I for one can not see any big loss in trying.

  93. st. anthony trojan August 29, 2014 4:02 pm

    # 81, 91…you two should be marketing managers up there…cuz u both think outside of that small ‘match box’ they have up there now…

When BJ was thinking to close ‘yellow section’ i suggested giving discounts to ne ‘pop warner’ child that wore his jersey in the yellow section…future players or fans…
they can’t go games alone.. but mom or pop would have to drive them…n if say 7 to 10 from team going..peer pressure would add more..n maybe even car pool.. better yet..

But ‘family’ friendly is absolutely should be tried…for next game…this could be ‘pushed’ on Perry & Price…FOR FREE….. but we not have ‘Ricks’ proposal…which was not even looked at…. cuz we needed the money…maybe be ‘penny wise n pound foolish’ but of course we will never know…

  94. st. anthony trojan August 29, 2014 4:09 pm

N coco n Derek… that is how a betting man.. should play… but for a person ‘associated’ with the team as official voice of warrior football..he should ‘stifle’ on that… as MR. BUNKER WOULD SAY…

Remember taking points is being positive…when coach was asked last year…the spread..his remark..USC is not better then this his team by that spread… n they beat the spread if me remember correctly…he knew the caliber of players.. HE HAD…n knew they were not that good… which when season progressed..proved to be true…as was his pick of QB….

Watched the Huskies practice today up here in Mililani. Holy smokes!! They looked absolutely AWESOME!!! They were firing on all cylinders!! The typical well oiled Peterson Built Machine we’ve come to expect!! Only this time its on steroids!!!

Tomorrow, I want the Huskies to bring their best!! I don’t want any excuses when they lose!!!

    I Mua Warriors!!!

Allow, Waikiki hotels to sell tickets in the yellow section to tourists (with out of state ID) at a discount, as most team supporters already have a pre-paid package. Tickets would be purchased through stadium internet site, or through Ground transportation vendors. The Bus tie in would be nice.

  99. pollypicador August 29, 2014 4:29 pm

    My picks-

    Joey-155 plus rushing yards

    IW-111 plus rushing yards

(If IW can develop into being like the Utah State QB, Chuckie Keeton type, this will go well for the Warrior offense).

Offensive line allowing 3 sacks or less
(the O-line has to step up, they’ve aged, rippened. It’s time they pay dividends).

    Harding-8 catches
(He needs to be all over the field, he needs to cease every opportunity especially
    YACS).

Ste-95 yard Kickoff return for a TD
(UH needs to a big boost on special teams).

The 2 Warrior safeties stealing the show on defense
(these 2 have to if UH is to win).

    UH-24
    UW-20

Who cares what’s on paper. Who cares that the Huskies team touts 4 All-American candidates on defense and returns a D-line that was 4th in the nations in QB sacks last year…these are my wishes. I want UH to win.

UH needs to pop UW’s balloon.

  100. cocobean August 29, 2014 4:30 pm

Hope UH marching band will do their best tomorrow.
Hope no one gets injured on both teams.
Hope Norm shows no mercy to UW.
Hope Pomai and Cliff enjoy over the rainbow experiences.
    🙂

  104. kawika49 August 29, 2014 5:18 pm

Have Hawaiian Airlines sell tickets for, the family friendly at a discount on Kauai, Maui, Big Island and other outlets in Hawaii (other than Oahu.) for those going to Oahu for the weekend. That could possibly include Basketball, VB and Baseball.
Naturally the discounted price would be shared 50/50 with UH. I 10% off 5%Hawaiian, 5% UH would swallow.

Hope Chow’s signature phrases come true:

“The football is shaped oblong…sometimes it takes funny bounces…”
I hope the ball bounces the Warrior’s way.

“It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”
I hope the wheels fall off for Washington.

“We sure need the 12th man rooting us on.”
I hope everything lines up-planets, stars, moon, voices of the ancestors, zodiac, feng shui).

“The boys played their hearts out.”
I hope this is a prelude to a victory and happiness.

“I can feel it in my bones, I can feel the team going over the hump.”
I hope this is poetic justice. I hope the coach feels a good twitch in his bones after
the Warriors victory tomorrow over UW.

CSU 31 Colorado 17 wit 1:10 to go

  118. hatakeman August 29, 2014 6:15 pm

We’ve lost some good players like Trevor Davis and Keith Kirkwood to transfer, but we also got some good inbound transfers like Quinton Pedroza, Taz Stevenson, Jeremy Castro, Kory Rasmussen… No sense worrying about the ones that leave. Beau Reilly is our gain after he originally committed to Colorado St.

  119. Tempmanoa August 29, 2014 6:37 pm

It hurts to lose good players to transfers, especially when they are in areas we were thin in. Muir was the best offensive lineman we have had in years, he started 12 games as a freshman and Norm liked him. Tomey said he was the most talented person on the team. Losing Trevor and Kirkwood was hard because we lost Gant, Clark Evans, and Stutzman to graduation, and Haynes and Subblefield to injuries. Gant, Evans, Stutz, Haynes and Kirkwood were our top receivers last year. Now we break in new guys.

Happy Birthday Pomai and Rainbow Cliff.

Thank you for all of the birthday wishes. Go Bows!

  124. chopsueyboy August 29, 2014 9:05 pm

How do you use the voucher? Tried going to the H-Zone and they don’t sell tickets like how Rainbowtique used to, and they don’t accept AMEX. Bought a jersey, received voucher, and thought I could redeem immediately, shucks. When asked the cashier how to use the voucher, they said call the number on the voucher, of course, it’s already after hours of operation.
    Can someone help please?
    Mahalo

  126. pollypicador August 29, 2014 9:07 pm

Check out the Beemer interview on this site.

He said he threw everything but the kitchen sink at the players in off season workouts.

He said he’s very proud of his players and said the team worked hard, where only 3 of the players received A+.

He said Afusia, Woolsey, and Yap absolutely killed it in workouts, but he then let on that those weren’t the three.

For now he wants to keep it under wraps as to who his bulls are (which is understandable…why let on to the opposition this information or whatever his personal reasons are ).

He also said he developed a special workout plan for Joey to resist against hamstring pulls.

One thing I see in Beemer as opposed to other SC that I’ve seen at UH is that he doesn’t coddle his players. I, mean, you can see this in practice…all the players are driven in their drills. The ones that slack, I see, get called out after practice and are punished (do extra running).

For once, I hope it’s the Huskies fan that’s pulling his/her hair out, cursing the football gods and suffering a painful defeat today.

For once, I hope it’s the other side today watching their Huskies and saying to himself/herself “omg,” “I don’t know if I should laugh or to cry,” “Anybody want season tickets,” “Peterson, who,” “I waited all year for this,” and “This is embarrassing.”

For once, can everything go the Warrior’s way.

For once, can prayers be answered, hard work by the coaches and players be rewarded and the thrill of victory over a worthy opponent be experienced. A win today would be so awesome.

    For once

    Warriors, come out to playyyyyyyyyy……….

  143. oneseason August 30, 2014 7:07 am

My Rainbow Warrior Football season tickets cost $99. Similar seats in Husky Stadium cost $495. Good sideline seats that cost around $250 in Aloha Stadium cost about $1000 in Husky Stadium. That’s the price Husky fans pay for a new stadium and (maybe) a competitive Pac-12 team. Personally, I would rather pay one fourth the cost and accept the shame of not being able to afford a stadium with luxury boxes that I wouldn’t ever visit. But the Rainbow Warrior Football team deserves good training facilities and coaching. I believe we, the fans and residents of Hawaii, are paying for. I want to see a good game today. I want to see a quality and well coached UH team take on a quality and well coached UW team. I want to see UH end the day with more points on the board. More than anything though, I want all the players to leave uninjured and feeling all their hard work was worth it. Lets go Bows! Go Dawgs!
