Game day: Washington
Exactly nine months after the 2013 season ended, the 2014 season begins with today’s game between UH and Washington.
For UH, there are these questions:
> How will quarterback Ikaika Woolsey respond as an opening-day starter?
> How will the defense, renovated under Kevin Clune, perform?
> Can the Warriors slow Hau‘oli Kikaha?
One thing is certain, the Warriors’ haka is as good as ever. Fans awaiting entry into last night’s volleyball match were able to view a haka rehearsal on neighboring Ching field. Linebacker Lance Williams and tight end Harold Moleni are the leaders this year.

After his sophomore year, running back Randall Okimoto had an opportunity to leave Farrington High and enroll at Mid-Pacific Institute. His parents left the decision to him. After much consideration, Okimoto decided to stay at Farrington. He then had to notify his coach that he wanted to rejoin. Okimoto spoke of life-long friendships with teammates and, most of all, the guidance from the Farrington coaches. Skippa Diaz, the head coach, a man who could make lemonade out of lemons with his crushing handshake, became tearful in appreciation.
Two years later, UH football coach Bob Wagner had an available UH football scholarship. He told Diaz he could give it to anyone of his choice. Diaz picked Okimoto, a dazzling but diminutive running back. Okimoto went on to play for the Warriors, earn a degree and then return to Farrington to teach. Okimoto is now Farrington’s head coach.
There are thousands of players — and regular students — Diaz has helped and influenced through the years. Life might be tough, but Diaz inspired youths to conquer obstacles. For the past four years, Diaz fought the good fight against stage 4 cancer.
Today, the world lost a great man. Deepest sympathy to Skippa Diaz’s family.

It’s there now
It’s going to be a hot one. No breeze. I’m in the mood for some hot dawgs. Slap on the mustard. Hit ’em with relish. Play with big onions. Take a big bite out of them. Go Warriors!
Wishing Coach Chow and the team a great game.
Will always support the team, win or lose.
GO BOWS!!
FIGHTING!
there it is…Go Rainbow Warriors!
Has anyone used the shuttle from Leeward Community College?
How frequent are the buses? Crowded?
Game day. Why do I feel nervous?
GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!!
Good morning Tsaikos!
chopsueyboy – come visit us at the Tsaiko-gate. No need take bus. Let me know if you need directions.
GO WARRIORS!
GO WAHINE!
PS finish making bp. Will head out soon, but gotta stop to buy batteries for da rajio. No can find the charger.
Nothing like the start of football season.
The trainers need to keep the players hydrated.
Northern Iowa giving Iowa all kinds of fits.
The shuttle service from Leeward CC is excellent. Cost (last year $2/person…12 yrs and under-free). Bus leaves when full; about every 10 minutes. Only negative is leg room. Bus designed for elementary school kids. If you have long legs, uncomfortable. This is the 3rd year I’ll be using this service. Bus has two stops inside stadium – 1st Tailgate tent area and 2nd stop west of south endzone.
Oh yeah, ample parking space.
OSD, I too been tracking the Northern Iowa – Iowa game. They’re a passing team. 4th Q, one min left, Iowa 31, NIU 23. NIU 380 passing yds; David Johnson 205 receiving yds on 5 catches; long of 70 yds. Six NIU receivers with catches – they spread it around. Rushing – net 27 yds.
Come join us in San Diego for our road game on Oct. 18 ($20 each ticket); so far we have a group of 170 Hawaii fans sitting at the 40-50 yd line 10-12 rows behind our Warrior bench; including the 40+ member families of Kody Afusia and Tyler Hadden!
Also got a block of 250 seats at the San Jose St. game on Nov. 15 ($25 each–regular price is $37); just for Hawaii fans at the 50 yd line 10-20 rows behind our Warrior bench. See them do the haka right in front of you!
Got 50 yd line seats at Fresno on Nov. 29 but so far only 15 of us; anyone wants to join us diehards? Our team needs your support in this hostile stadium.
Also got 40 yd line seats at Rice; 10 yd line seats at Colorado; all sitting with other Hawaii fans–everybody wear green!

Good game day morning everyone!
Condolences to the Diaz ohana.
To quote the bard …
“The fault, dear Braddah, is not in our ST,
But in browser cache, that we are unposted.”
Couldn’t see today’s gameday post without closing and restarting the browser.
The Star-Advertiser poll today asks: “Will you be watching or listening to Saturday’s University of Hawaii football game?”
Poll is about even right now.
How about we go skew the results…? 😉

It’s… UH Game Day in Hawai’i Nei!!!
Yipeeeeee!!!
Good morning, Tsai-kos!!
14 SteveM:
I’m IN! Hehehe
Former UH WR Trevor Davis is playing on ESPN now with Cal Bears.
Condolences to the Coach Diaz family…
Wow, what a nice story about Coaches Skippa Diaz and Randall Okimoto.
My deepest condolences to the Diaz family!
RIP, Coach Diaz!
🙁
Can’t wait to check out the Haka!
One of my favorite things to see before a Warrior game begins!!
The Jets cut Alex Green but Greg Salas is still in the mix. They cut wide receiver Stephen Hill their second round pick a couple of years ago.
Go get um, QB Ikaika Woosley; Go Warrior Team!!
Focus!
Deepest sympathy to the Diaz family for the loss of a great man, teacher, and a special gift to mold young men into contributing adults!
does Hauoli have another year?
if yes, maybe he would consider using that last year like Taz – graduate school and play for UH.
Guud Morning Tsaikos….this bootiful day is somewhat tempered with the loss of a great human being. I met Skippa a while back and an was very impressed with him. One man who has made a huge impact on a lot of kids who might have strayed from the straight and narrow. Hawai’i has lost a treasure but he has left behind a lot of young ones who will step up. Randall is just one of them.
smell da BP, bbq smoke and some wonderful things coming from lower Halawa.
IMUA WARRIORS!
Condolences to the Diaz Ohana. Skippa touched the lives of many young people during his career as a teacher and coach. He will be greatly missed.
Wow Trevor Davis with a 76 yard TD . TD for TD haha
Portland State -7, OSU – 6 1st quarter. Beavers don’t usually do well against FCS school in their openers – Sac State, Eastern Washington.
Rest in Peace Skippa! You’ll always be remembered as the “bull of Kalihi”…Truly an great sportsman and coach!
Aloha all! Game day ! A house, the only glitch to your proposal is that Hauoli is a legitimate first day NFL draft selection. Depending how his year goes, some scouts see him as 2nd or 3rd round choice.
One early recollection is attending Hula Bowl practice at the Termite Palace watching players walk off the field and patting shoulder pads.
One player tells each kid, “Thanks.” And acknowledges all as he walks by.
My Dad asks, “Eh. You know who dat was?”
Me, “Uh uh.”
“Dat was Skippa Diaz!”
I think to myself, “Who dat?”
Now I know…
Aloha Coach!
RIP
Called in sick for work, can’t think of nothing else but UH first game. Have a good feeling about this team and young coaches. I live on Maui wish I could be at the game so please Oahu people support ours boy .
Condolences to the Dias Ohana…
@ 14 SteveM
I voted! Just need another 12 Tsaikos to take the lead!
Sincere condolences to the Diaz Ohana. I was able to meet Coach Diaz once and although it was a brief meeting you had a sense of how genuine and great this man was.
Salas officially on the squad, not so lucky–Alex Green.
Does anyone know if Oceanic is streaming the game today?
Updated gate/traffic map for Gameday: http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/football/uh-fb-updated-gate-traffic-map-for-gameday/
The search begins. How to watch the game from South Korea? I got a VPN into SF so I’m watching ESPN3 right now with my Austin provider. I got a new laptop so I would hate to add all that malware that comes with some of free “broadcasts”. Anyway, I have a good feeling about this team. I hope they do well and stay healthy. Hawaii Bowl!
Let’s Go Bows. Beat Da Dogs!
deepest sympathies to the Diaz family on the passing of a great model of life.
Do You Smell What’s Cooking????? (from the Rock). Oh Yeah!!!! (from the Missing Link) Make My Day !!!!! (Dirty Harry). Go Warriors!!!!!! (little old me).
Aloha, Coach Skippa.
Oh yeah! Game day baby! Go Warriors!
Ah……game day. Nuthin’ better.
It is a hot and humid day. UW will be drained before the game starts.
Go Warriors!!!
Fresno just scored first TD against USC. USC leads 24-7, 7 min to go in first half.
Just hope, we got lots of misters/electric fans and take the Makai side for the bench (more shade).
So sorry to hear about Coach Skippa Diaz. Condolences to his ‘ohana.
Rest in Peace, Coach Diaz.
Getting excited here on the east coast. 10:30 pm start, might have to miss church. Go warriors !!
rest in aloha coach diaz, condolences to his o’hana. make it a good year warriors, send the huskies home with their 1st loss of the season (31-17). httr!
On the front door of another Warrior football season, local high school football season and the buzz of football elsewhere everything came to an end for Coach Diaz.
On the morning of the kickoff to another Warrior season Coach Diaz passes.
I ask why.
I ask why the man upstairs couldn’t spare him one extra day…one extra orbit.
Yet it wasn’t meant to be, and it saddens me even more.
Condolences to Diaz ohana.
LETS GO BOWS!
Best of luck to our Warriors for a successful season!
Go Warriors! Let’s get off to a great start.
I hope we see some of the other QBs as well. All the best to Ikaika for his start. I hope we see 300 yards of passing from him.
GO WARRIORS!!! Some of my friends are trying to get into the stadium and said that the lot was full.
Draw the line in the sand Warriors.
Hold your ground.
Hold it with pride, spirit and fight for all those can’t.
Go Warriors.

14-10 Washington.
First nail slowly getting pounded into coffin. Not showing any confidence in offensive line, going with trick play.
what a game so far
Liking what i see out of the offense.
I have no problem with the trick play just wish it was ewaliko or iosefa throw it instead
Hey, it’s not a game without TDs!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Nice stop, D!!
Yeah! Pressha that QB!!
Come on D!!
Go D!!
Hold em, D!!!
UHF808, the D appears to be getting more in tune and think they can do ok.
DEFENSE!
*clap clap*
DEFENSE!
!!!!
Not seeing what was promised by Defensive Coordinator, attacking Defense. Hawaii playing a very vanilla defense, NO blitzing at all.
Yeah! They’re doing a great job, whitey!!
Poti!!
17-10 Washington.

13 or tie???????
Auwe. Off the crossbar! 17-10 Washington at the half.
What the heck!?!?
No FG
10 us: 17 them
Keep on, Warriors!!!
Half time!
Like the way Woolsey is playing. Seems more composed in the pocket than I thought and is making good decisions.
Down by seven but still in the game.
Very good first half for the first game.
Pound, Pound, Pound, nail going in coffin a little bit more. Defensive Line, and Linebackers, no where on the field. Linebacker are really slow. UHFan808, you can run faster then Hawaii Linebackers.
Defense just needs to stop giving up big plays like that 91 yard TD. Make the Huskies work for every yard.
Am pleased with the team. Taz is a beast out there
What happened to Afusia?
Aloha tsaikos! Long time no talk.
Go Bows
Hi ya BG808! A really long time!!!
Looked at the ESPN game statistics and noticed Devan Stubblefield has on catch for 6 yards?
hawaii played ok. The only 2 problems i had was the roughing the passer penalty on 3 and 12 and the 91 yard td.
Hiya wafan. It is indeed.
3rd qtr!
@Bleedgreen808
according to espn 1420 he hurt his right hand so they are gonna wrap it up.
good start for the D
Dear ESPN!
During UH fb games, tell us stuff about our players and coaches! Like what they like to do, what they’re like, fun stuff, serious stuff, what it took for them to come to play/coach at UH! Just stuff about them!
Pretty please?
I really don’t care to hear about attendance issues right now. I’m busy cheering on my team!!
Nice punt, Scotty!
Thanks markazulu.
Peterson does not look good in purple. Just saying.
Great job, D!!
Held em back way back so back that they stayed in the endzone!!
Yeah!
Time for a big play O!
@bleedgreen808 you ain’t lying it looks weird lol
Let’s go Offense!!
Gooooooooooo!!! Ikaika!!!!!!!!!
Kody Afusia is out for the game
Huzzah!!
FG! Yay!!!
13 us : 17 them!
9:45 3rd qtr!
Way to go! FG good. 17-13 Washington.
Woosley is playing smart.
hope kody heals and be back in the next game.
A couple penalties at the wrong time…a jump pass on the 4th down play incomplete…cross bar FG no good….and yet we’re only down by 4 in the 3rd.
Afusia broken hand.
HOLD THEM!
Moses Samia is playing well.
No hold! Stop them!!!
Where are my manners? Good game day evening Tsaikos!
big 4th down
Looks like Afusia has a sprained or broken right pinky by the looks of it.
I say they are punting out of the time out.
Great game day to you, 99club!!
Hi Tsai-kos
And Lurk-ers!
Little by little!
Steal the balllllll!!
Almost!
Hehe
on another note did anybody see that catch in the nebraska game when the guy caught the ball behind his back.
Loving the pressha!!!
Pressha
Phressha
Prheshhhhhaaaa!!!
This game right there for the taking…….go bows!
Time for a huge return!

Hmmm…heat and humidity catching up with Washington? Run it, Hawaii!
Gotta move the ball!
Go O!!!

Go warriors, run that ball.
Lotsa back n forth 4th downs!
Our ball!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OFFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!
Notofalsestarts, K?
K 🙂
What is a snap infraction?
decision time. chance em or pin em??????
Hawaii needs to recruit fast WR, the ones they have now are to slow to get deep and create separation.
Scott Harding is earning his keep tonight! Great punt.
Come on D! Pin ’em back there!!!
Hey guys,
Been a long time but man our DEFENSE LOOKS GOOD!
Must be the 3rd qtr lull…
No believe them!
Believe us screamin’ UH fans! Hehehe
good call. D playing good, let them attack and create a fumble or interception.
Went for the safety!
Loving that!
Just one second moa and …ka-pow!
Time for a TD!
it is iso and laka time.
Joey.
Excellent field position for a TD or at least a FG.
O-line.
The defense and special teams are playing well and the offense is doing ok.
FG! 17-16 Washington.
u get da bulls and the opposition is tired and you piss.
FG!
Wahooooooooo!!
Way to go D!
You did terrific fantastic spectacular field position!
Now let us see if Hawaii learned anything from last year, in close games.
markazulu-
Yup. And no turnovers is huge.
We can do it, Offense!!!
I like one TD!!
Oooo…sooooo…close.
demo’s demons are doing a very good job.
Ouch. That must have hurt.
SACK!
Nice sack for Simon.
FANTASTIC, D!!! GEEV UM!!! Hahahaha..!
Yahoo!
give a huge hand to da D. HAND HAND HAND
Man, the defense is playing inspired!
Defense doing their job. Offense needs to capitalize on that.
If we get a FG, we win. Let that sink in.
Big O!
The offense is playing well conservative football not costing us the game. The Defense besides that 91 yard play has played fantastic and well the special teams has played pretty well.
Go! Joe(y)!
Dawgs has only 3 first downs in second half.
We need a turnover!
Harding is limping
D D D D
Big play comin’ up.
This is the DO, or DIE, DRIVE, FOR OFFENSE.
Clune’s gang is starting to jell
The O is up!
Let’s go O!! I believe!!!
Player down
Joey, joey, joey !!!!
He ran off the field
First down btw!
Almost long reception!!
You get um, O!!
Pounding that nail into the coffin. The players have not learned from last year. They must LOVE losing close games.
scratching bald head.
Think the Warriors are going to need a defensive turnover to win this game. Offensive has pretty much stalled just like Washington.
this is like an nfl game with 2+ minutes to go.
no turnover so far, so one is overdue. Go Warriors
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A MORAL VICTORY, A LOST IS A LOST!!!!
LET’s GO WARRIORS!
LET’s GO WARRIORS!
Yeah! So cheer louder, then!!!
wrong kind turnover, the udda guys make 1st down.
FINISHED POUNDING IN THE FIRST NAIL INTO CHOW’S COFFIN!!!!
Need a miracle.
1:35 left in 4th qtr!
BYE, BYE, CHOW!!!
Good game, Hawaii! Good night, y’all.
He was stinkin out. Ah come on!
game is on ice
17-16 uw win
one revolution of the ball
instead the fg attempt hits the crossbar
I want to cry for the players.
I feel sick.
‘Attaway, ‘Bows!
Come back next week to pound the Beavs!!!
Great game, looking for a good season.
On to a Hawaii Team that knows how to WIN close matches, THE WAHINE VOLLEYBALL TEAM.
that missed field goal at the end of the first half kicked us in the end.
Great football game though.
Return of the Hawaii D.
Mucho kudos to da players. FG bites our okoles. You guys are going to make Warrior fb a most fun one this year. Players get an A, Coaches C-B.
Dang it!
Couple of inopportune mistakes. Shoulda, coulda, woulda… Still a great effort, and vast improvement from the past two years. Looking forward to the rest of this season.
Radio said U-Dub was supposed to be the toughest opponent on this year’s schedule… We’ll see how the rest of the year plays out.
Have a great, safe weekend, everyone!
16 us : 17 them
And we looked GREAT!!!
I wont get all overly excited though i remember being surprised by hawaii’s d against USC last year and we all know how that happened.
Thank you, Warriors!
You played TOUGH!!!
CHEEEHUUUUUU!!!
Thank You everyone for hangin with the Bows, and not setting the table for that super-Troll who goes by “VolleyBallFan”
Wondering… hope our injuries aren’t too bad. Heal up, Warriors!
If mr Woosley develops nicely over this year it’ll be a good year.
Here is something really nice Hawaii’s D held them to no offensive points in the 2nd half.
And keep on working hard! 🙂
hope in the future that da warriors do not gamble a FG unless it is very very necessary. 3 in the hand is betta than allahs.
Radio says… 88 more offensive yards than UW… against 25th ranked… and this wasn’t garbage-time yardage… and 91 of their yards was on one play… lots of positives here.
Players will be more hungry next game. This leaves a bad taste when they know they had this one.
mahalo warriors for a nail biting start. hope no need bite nails in the future.
WW, you correct. without the long bomb, the puppies would have had only 63 yds passing.
Marcus Kemp short hopping a wide open pass to the TE on 4th down, 91 yard td play, Roughing the Passer penalty on a 3rd down stoppage which on the next play they score a 20 yard td, missed field goal. Hawaii had a lot of plays when they shot themselves in the foot but imo the positives out weigh the negatives no turnovers, iosefa rushed for 143 yards, scott harding punted well, the defense held them to no points in the 2nd half, the o-line and even the d-line played pretty well.
jeez anybody listening to the fans calling in braddah man getting nuts on Gary.
TAKE DA POINTS!!!! lol
I was very proud of our team tonight. Yeah, there were some tough penalties and missed FG but it was great to see how much fight this team has. On paper UW was physically and athletically superior in every category but UH players showed up to play and represented themselves, the University and Hawaii very well. I hope they can take this game to propel themselves to a successful season. The true UH fans should take every opportunity to respond in kind. Ignore the trolls because they are losers and they want to drag everyone down with them. Just like the alamihi that they are. Several years ago UW went winless for the season. The next year they still had 60K plus fans show up. It was sad to see the sparse crown at this game. The fan base here needs to show up and make a difference. I think the lack of fans in the stands caused this loss. There was no home filed advantage at this game. Sadly, I live in Hilo or I would have been there. When Hawaiian Airlines stop ripping off outer Island people then maybe I can attend games in the future.
“home field advantage”
interesting observation about our “local airline”. paying $300 r/t is not ripping off, but raping us.
Na Koa Anuenue, you left your hearts on the field and I am so very proud to say I am a University of Hawaii fan. To Coach Chow and Staff great offensive and defensive schemes. IMUA
won the 1st, 3rd and 4th quarter
won the time of possession by 9 minutes
ran 97 plays, 2o some more plays than uw
the team made a splash, made me proud, was impressed
then watched puff the magic dragon take everything away
forget about hindsight…wez should have been dragon slayers
famous last words from the choir– theres always next time. Okay.
Good game. Good showing by Hawaii.
Proud of our Team. Next week, LET’S GO!!!!!!!!!!
Tough one. Held them below the spread, that was great.
We might have lost to the score, but I thought they won the game.
Pound the beavers next week.
wait theres volleyball isn’t there?
that should sooth the pain…not
For one brief shining moment (actually about three quarters), I thought we had them!
While the final outcome was disappointing–we have plenty to build upon. Biggest surprise–O line was rather stout for the first game. And Joey was a straight out hammer….
At least it showed how little colin cowherd knows lol.
its hilarious reading the other side
man you would think they were the ones that lost their puppy
the consensus of opinion over there seems to be like this could be a long year for UW, the sky is falling, we’re going down in the polls, this player stunk…that player stunk …lol
asu up by 1.
While we are going on fun facts according to ESPN 1420 this is the first time since 1996 that we held a ranked team to under 20 points.
Coach Clune did not disappoint; he is the real deal.
Better game next week. We gettum.
just took a quick browse at the Washington fan site boy they are pissed off.
Somebody already starting a #firepeterson rant.
There are no moral victories. It’s still a L in the win-lost column. Time to move on and think about Oregon St.
hatakeman Mahalo! Enjoyed the shuttle, long line getting back to LCC, regulars commented usually not everyone stays till end of game and bigger crowd than usual.
wonda wat happened to sa trojan. hope you neva have a brown out and missed da game.
Well done, young men; https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=good+time+together+cecilio+and+kapono
volleyballfan . . .
It’s no wonder that is your screen name. You obviously know nothing about football. There were mistakes, but against a ranked, Pac12 opponenent the mistakes were minimal. Extremely minimal. There were some missed opportunities, sure. But people like you are what doom UH sports.
No moral victories, as many have said. But I was proud of the effort. I am disappointed only because I felt UH deserved the win.
Tough loss. Team played hard. Personal foul on third down stop is the kind of mental error that usually comes back to haunt you. Tonight it turned the momentum and gave UW life. And the 4th and 2 play call was … Interesting.
People can question the play calls all they want. The 4th down pass by the WR was a good call and could have worked.
The ones that sting the most are the late hit on the QB penalty and the missed field goal. Game deciders. Still, those can be overcome.
Would have worked if only . . .
Great game!
Beat Da Beavhs!
Pomai,
56 – 14 d1shima
No to all; the Best is yet to come ; https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=good+time+together+cecilio+and+kapono
#295: agree with you. No moral victory, but our team deserved the win. I heard that the CBS Sports broadcasters continually commented that they could not believe that UW was protecting a lead in the 4th quarter because we had controlled the game. Either UW is way worse than projected or we are way better than projected. Or maybe a little of both?
mctruck,
Agree wicchu. DC Clune dialed up a good game. Hope that continues.
Speaking of Oregon State they actually trailed portland state at the half 13-14. In the 2nd half though they forced 5 turnovers. Oregon State was penalized 13 times.
A great game!
A real nail biter to the end.
We justa get rid of the lapses.
gotta
What a game! Very proud of the effort by the Rainbow Warriors. Can’t wait until next week.
Hawaii looked WAY better than most people expected them to look. I find it kinda funny that most folks aren’t giving any credit to a Hawaii team that is clearly improved, instead they are talking about how “over-rated” and “junk” this Washington squad is. This was a great showing for Hawaii against a quality opponent and I can’t wait to see Hawaii play Oregon State! (Especially since Oregon State did not look very good against a middling FCS team in Portland State). If Hawaii plays like they did tonight, they’ll definitely take the fight to the Beavers and possibly pull off the upset. 🙂
And by “most people”, I’m talking about folks outside of this blog like the folks at ESPN. Heck, a lot of the UW fans are saying that this was more a bad showing by the Huskies as opposed to an improved UH team. Anyway, can’t wait for next week! 🙂
me cannot watch gamev whitey….get heart attack maybe…he he
the ‘boys’ did good…4 me they all get a A +…coaches n players…no turnovers for us…wow that is excellent…second half they get a ‘tamago’ …excellent defense…maybe their QB is not that good…time will tell…
just cannot have let down now next week…we need that win next week…
Excellent punting…way to go there.
Now just hope the ‘wounds’ heal for next week…
The rainbow warriors’ headed in the right direction…fill the stadium next week for our first win…2014 season…
Then have to work harder for following week.. n not let that one ‘slip’ away…
One interception …or one fumble… would have been nice…but they keep playing ‘D’ the way they did 2 dy.. n they be fine…
NITE ALL…
FYI – KICK HIT THE UPRIGHT, NOT THE CROSSBAR.
Unsung hero: Brenden Urban. It seems it like Stephen wrote about Urban’s plight only a week ago, how he couldn’t afford to remain in school only to be awarded a late scholarship. Today, he’s called on for his first game action in three years when Afusia injures his hand and plays the rest of the game … much of it against the 340-plus-pound Shelton. Talk about stepping up. Props to him. I do hope Afusia will be able to play with one of those club-like casts.
Any word on what turnstile attendance was tonight?
Good showing by the team…all you can ask for is a chance to win the game at the end and we had that.
The team played well enough to win but didn’t. I came away thinking Chow is getting closer to finish building the type of team he wants. We’re still missing some pieces but we’re not that far off. No one is more disappointed than Chow and Co. because as he’s stated before he doesn’t buy into moral victories.
The one solace I can offer to the team is you all have given fans HOPE that things are getting better. Wins are going to come.
YEA COCO ME AGREE.. ALSO THE PLAYERS HE IS RECRUITING IS GETTING BETTER BALSSO…
yea coco… n also the players he is recruiting is getting better n it shows…all of the 808 can be proud of what happened at ‘aloha’ to nite… be even better in years to come…
we need to win next week.. at least it will not be a ‘cake walk’ for osu….sumone will spend sum sleepless nites handling our special team n defense play.. n maybe by 3 week.. they have to start to worry about our offense…
VolleyballFan, #242, you’re giving trolls a bad name. At least spell correctly.
Lost should be loss.
Going to miss you Skippa.

“Hawaii has nobody to blame but themselves.” True statement but if Hawai’i can fix those errors in future games this team can be special.
Do not worry people, Norm Chow and his players will find another way of losing next week’s game against Oregon State. What is keeping me interested, in Norm Chow’s team, is to see what different way they find in losing a game. What kind of bone head play a player makes toward losing a game. Which always relates back to coaching, or a lack thereof.
Norm Chow is a great coach to have recognized Clune as a great coach and have gone out to get him. All the coaches deserve a round of applause. One in particular is Gary Beemer for getting the guys into shape, and for keeping the injuries to a minimum. Looks like we will be playing our second game with all the players, that is, with no one sitting out with injuries. We were able to compete well with a ranked team, and we are coming back next week with all the same players. No doubt that we will be better next year. Chasing championships, and rankings!
Most fans would probably say Oregon St has a much better QB than Washington’s.
323. — Afusia may be out ?
It is the rare person who criticizes a student athlete with the term “bonehead”. These are not professional players and they don’t play for your folly or so you takeout your frustration on them, as an indirect slight to Coach Chow. Perhaps getting a rise out of other bloggers while you sit in dim lit room is the way you obtain your jollies– but, don’t take it out on the kids. I have often found that folks that like to bully later in life, were often the centerpiece of lickins and abuse earlier in their life–grow up, and don’t call these kids names.
Everyone is free to opine an opinion and vantage–but when you marginalize players with name calling, you have crossed a line– period. Maybe you were not taught any better, maybe the juvenile exercise of calling out kids behind a screen name and a computer is your idea of being an adult? In any event, it’s not call cool, and it certainly not Pono or mature. Like I have said before, Halawa Valley rule #1, don’t say something about someone or something that you are not prepare to say and defend, face-to-face.
The Warriors outplayed and outcoached Washington. If not for the level of talent and depth of that talent tonight is not in question. A few mistakes…..all were typical of first game with many new starters. The experts were wrong the critics and cynics were wrong and now just harp on the one point loss….nothing elwe to complain about……tremendous effort and one that is typical and evident in Coach Chow’s staff and team. Aaron Taylor and that other 2nd class character should be ashamed of themselves for there performance tonite….Keith Clune???? Chris Naoele did not go to UH and an assortment of other missteps along with fawning over the Huskies and making excuses for them rather than giving credit to one heck of an offensive and defensive effort….it was not a level playing field and the team and the coaches made it one. The Warriors will be a surprise to the chagrin of some and I for one had no doubt they would show up drastically improved….its good to be a Warrior and I for one am certainly proud of what took place tonight even in a 1 point loss!!!! Go Warriors

Pomai, Please and Thank You,
Hawaii 35 Oregon 17
Oregon State
But I like the way you tink!
😉
Pedroza did good things but needs to catch a little better. We also need to go for field goals instead of trying to go for a TD since it seems like the defense is doing well. Wish Harding ran out of bounds at the end of the 2nd qtr to save a time out. Other than that we looked pretty good and hopefully put a scare into Oregon state. Go Bows!
Good morning!
Morning, Gang!
The sun rose! Woke me up… was so bright!
Pomai, I think…
UH – 45 – 10 – OSU

It is a difficult decision to either ignore the vile comments of people like volleyball fan or respond to them. I do think this persons self hatred is projected onto others and then he gets some cold comfort when responded to negatively. It feeds his self hatred. But his comments are tiresome and actually pathological. If my comments in response just feed the flames and encourage more of the same I apologize to blog members. My wish for you volleyball fan is that you get the help you need and blogging won’t help you. I am sorry for whatever harshness you have experienced in your life. But I can tell you with authority that what you are doing will not make your life any better and in the end just increases your misery.
Interesting reading some UW blogger comments before and after the game …
Before:
– “What’s up fellas? I say we roll 52 to 17 only after we put the third string. I have bought in. I ran the stadium stairs at ECU this morning for my Dawgs. Got my Stanford game tics in the mail yesterday, I am totally stoked. Not to jump the gun, but if coach Pete is who we think; he is and the Dawgs are as mature as they appear. We Do not lose more that two games heading into the bowl.”
– “34-16 dogs. I’m giving Hawaii three field goals and a garbage time touchdown max. I think we will be surprised how disciplined this husky team will be under Petersen. And I see domination on special teams”
After:
– “I just hope the other 3 cupcakes don’t taste like this one.”
– “I hate pineapple cupcakes”
That was a very exciting game. $99 for 7 game season tickets is the best deal in town!
– Very good time management and use of timeouts.
– Successful play calling.
– I was very pleased (and surprised) by the success of the run game against a solid PAC-12 opponent.
– Almost no penalties.
– UH lead in every stat except put yards 🙂
Thank you Coach and UH Athletics for recruiting a complete coaching staff!
should be “UH lead in every stat except punt yards”
Since it was nine months. are you saying Rainbow cliff and the birthday gang were conceived after a football game?
#337 I pound um, at every opportunity.
Correction should have been response to #335
boola, meet the infamous steve. he’s very much like how you described him. he’s been pulling the same schtick here and on the volleyball blog for years. He’s been banned from posting here and on the volleyball blog but always shows up again under a new identity. Most don’t bother engaging him any more.
steve takes pride in having won the coveted Troll of the Year award every year since 2007. he works hard to keep his streak up.
Props to the team and their effort and lack of turnovers. Mind you that UW is a team with 4-5 star players on their roster, along with a couple of Parade AAs. Their football budget is around $23 million, their facilities rival the Taj Mahal, and they have big bucks boosters.
Addiitonal props to Brendan Urban and Ben Clarke who played very well on the O-line against a UW D-line that has 2 future NFL players. Aside from an early sack, I didn’t hear #8’s name called much during the game for UW.
UW fans not a happy group. Some are calling for Peterson’s head, saying “Is this what we get for $13 million?”
Ding, ding, ding!
New post is up.
Off the Hawaii Athletic site. Attendance was at 36411. I hope that grows for next week. We need a big showing. I could only imagine what it will be like with 40+ fans next week chanting defense. Lets do this guys
Go Warriors!!!
Head coach changed coaching staff which I think must have been really hard for him to do. Looks like it’s working.
I am changing from we get chance to we get em.
