Game day: South Alabama

Norm Chow’s first UH season ends tonight.

If anything, it was interesting.

* * * * *

A reminder that 17 seniors will be introduced before the game. After the game, fans, friends, family and, even, strangers may  interact with the players to give lei, pose for photos or just talk. The seniors:

• Keao Alo

• Haku Correa

• Siaki Cravens

• Alex Dunnachie

• Rykin Enos

• Paipai Falemalu

• Geordon Hanohano

• Luke Ingram

• Sterling Jackson

• Levi Legay

• Brandon Leslie

• Leroy Lutu Jr.

• Darryl McBride

• Dylan McCagg

• Kyle Niiro

• Kawika Ornellas

• Miah Ostrowski

* * * * * *

Though technically not a senior, this will be the last UH football game for graduate assistant Inoke Funaki. He is reaching the NCAA term limit of three years for a GA.

Funaki is a 2003 Kahuku High graduate. He went on a church mission before joining the Warriors. There are two distinct memories of Funaki: His celebration after the Warriors defeated Boise State to win the WAC title in 2007, and his play in an upset of No. 21 Fresno State on the road. He later switched to running back, where the wildcat was renamed the Noke.

Most of all, he’s a great person with a witty personality.

He once told this joke:

What did the hungry monster say after he ate Tonga?

“I want Samoa.”

We’ll miss ya, ‘Noke.

Practice makes perfect.

Here’s a clip of UH rehearsing the senior introductions: Seniors video.

* * * * *

One of the new ceremonies is the “Carry Off” in which each senior chooses an underclassman to carry him off the field at the end of the final practice of the year.

Here’s the clip: Carry-off video.

    Happy game day!

Congrats to the Wahine on their sweep last night.

Congrats and best wishes to all the Seniors.

    GO WARRIORS!!

    GO WAHINE!!

  8. kev-1 December 1, 2012 8:05 am

I will really miss Inoke being a part of the program. He is a person who always did what was asked as a player and always gave 110%. I would imagine he was the same as a GA. Thank you Inoke Funaki for being such a great Warrior.

ST, is there any hope that he could end up on the coaching staff in another capacity? What are his plans?

  9. kev-1 December 1, 2012 8:06 am

Good morning to all, by the way. It is gameday. As tough as it was sometimes this season, I am sad it is over.

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

Top 10! Good morning, Tsaikos! Go Warriors!

  11. Stephen Tsai December 1, 2012 8:11 am

Not sure about Funaki’s plans. But he is about to earn a master’s in public administration. (By the way, Princess Leila also is completing studies in that, too.)

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid December 1, 2012 8:18 am

Thank you Seniors! Thank you ‘Noke!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    DPK, check your messages.

  14. Old School Dave December 1, 2012 8:26 am

Best of luck to Inoke Funaki. Been watching him since he was a QB at Kahuku HS. Still remember that upset win at Fresno State during the 08 season. With all of the coaching turnover in the off-season, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s offered a full-time position somewhere.

Read that BYU’s Bronco Mendenhall is interested in the CU job. Apparently, the BYU fans are not happy with him and the direction the program is headed. BYU fans suffer from visions of grandeur in somehow viewing their program in the same light of Notre Dame.

“Hey, we’re BYU. We’re in Provo!!” zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  15. Derek December 1, 2012 8:28 am

Good luck to all the seniors and in your future endeavors. Thanks for being Warriors. Corey Nielson, a good guy and always a Warrior at heart. Just sorry it didn’t work out at UH.

  18. Kevin December 1, 2012 8:32 am

This season was interesting. I learned a lot about some of our blog “regulars” just by sitting back and seeing the … “thoughts” flow freely.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SLUGGER !!!

    …hope you get the day off… 🙂

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOJO !!!

    …ready for day 3 of your birthday party….? 😛

  20. MattyBoy December 1, 2012 8:34 am

    ST,

You think Kennedy is a “solid” Commit to UH or is he still kinda keeping his options open?

  21. cocobean December 1, 2012 8:36 am

    Seniors.

Mahalo for all the sweat, blood and tears you’ve invested over the tears. Your efforts are appreciated. You all have earned the right to say, “we are Warriors.”

On the sad side I say to all of you – Welcome to the real world. Use the lessons you’ve learned in the classroom and on the football field to forge ahead with your lives.

  22. Shoko December 1, 2012 8:37 am

Good luck to the Seniors! Remember to have fun and make it memorable.

  23. Derek December 1, 2012 8:39 am

BYU fans always think they are elite because they’ve won a national championship. They are arrogant. I know a former co-worker who graduated at BYY and he always told me Hawaii would never beat BYU. But, talking about Mendenhall I think he’s a very good coach.

  24. Warrior Dave December 1, 2012 8:41 am

The season is over today…mixed feelings. Hope the Warriors get a blowout win to finish the season on an up note, open more doors for a successful recruiting season, sell more tickets and bring in more fans for next year

  25. kifi December 1, 2012 8:42 am

#20 – We need to keep recruiting these commits until they sign. Can’t wait to see Kennedy in Warrior Green. He’s a throwback to the days of Levi Stanley. Like someone smarter than me said, it’s about building relationships, and maintaining those relationships throughout the entire recruiting process until they sign on the dotted line.

  26. kifi December 1, 2012 8:42 am

Good luck to all of the seniors.

  27. Ballpicker December 1, 2012 8:42 am

And, uh, here’s to no Teo sighting at the game. Boo ‘im, they try bring him to the 50 yard line beg’ of game or halftime whatever. He didn’t want a be a Warrior, he shall not be honored as one.

    MattyBoy

He’s solid, although 10 schools have visited him this week.

OK, I wanna be vague but two words: video and locker.

It they mean something, then I know you. Frickin’ awesome.

  45. wafan December 1, 2012 10:01 am

TG’s morning crew already there for the final one of the year.

Sad and yet a reason to celebrate. The end of a rough season and the start of many good seasons to come.

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  46. kkobi425 December 1, 2012 10:02 am

Wafan looks like Wahine Vball game televised on UW TV. Not sure what channel. Surprised last nights game wasnt televised on PAC-12 channel or Root.

  48. wafan December 1, 2012 10:13 am

    kkobi . . .

Nope, VolleyBows not on down here.

Still hoping for Wahine to settle the score.

  49. kev-1 December 1, 2012 10:14 am

    #33 Chicken Grease,

You know you are one of my favorites, but what the heck was that for? Who said anything about him being honored at tonights game? Kind of seems like you’re just spewing animosity towards Te’o for no reason but the fact that he chose not to stay home. That’s not cool. He plays for another program and has had tremendous success. You are starting to just sound bitter.

Yes, tonight’s game is ONLY about UH seniors. I think the Te’o hate is unnecessary today.

  50. Stephen Tsai December 1, 2012 10:19 am

Maybe we don’t give swimming and diving enough love.

So, today is officially Luke Hayes Day.

    He’s a diver. He’s Australian. He’s a Warrior.

    Luke!

    Luke!

    Luke!

  51. Stephen Tsai December 1, 2012 10:20 am

The real world offers me options that I choose to be positive ones.

That KC football player had options also. But he chose unwisely and in the end he made a negative decision by taking someone else’s life and then his. Pretty selfish!

I like my real world better. And believe me I’ve seen the seedy part of lives and know what the negitive side of the real world is like.

But its always better to be positive.

    Go Warriors

    Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

    But, hey, he’s Australian.

    Know who else is Australian?

    Luke Hayes.

  57. Ballpicker December 1, 2012 10:32 am

Yes, you are correct oh mundo.

  58. Derek December 1, 2012 10:37 am

You can see that McMackin’s recruiting classes were not that good. And, you can also see that Chow’s first recruiting class shows a lot of promise. So in that respect, the program is getting better. If Chow gets 2 more good classes then the program will be a lot more competive. You have to get the players to play. The coaches have to recruit, coach, teach, and plan. We still need playmakers, size, and speed.

I’m a little disappointed in Tulimasealii. Why make a commitment and then say he’s still keeping is options open. Better not to commit in the first place. Now, he might look like a two faced recruit, if he changes his mind. Then he looks bad and that’s not good. But, I understand it’s only a verbal commit and young men can be immature. He should have said nothing. Loose lips, sinks ships.

  59. Ballpicker December 1, 2012 10:37 am

So DPK did u travel off the mountain to get your street grindz on? Kamehameha sponsored a food truck gathering at Kakaako park last night. Entertainment by the keiki’s and lots of great food.

I ran into a few people including Grant L and his wife. Nice gathering.

    Imua Warriors

  60. 3-Prong December 1, 2012 10:52 am

d1: thanks for the link….so far so good at the half.

  61. SteveM December 1, 2012 10:52 am

Today’s Star-Advertiser poll is: “What do you think about the Jones Act, the 1920 law designed to protect U.S. domestic shipping interests?”

Cruisers should note the words “shipping interest”, since it applies to cargo. A similar law pertaining to passengers carriage is the “Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886”. It is mistakenly together with the Jones Act because they are conceptually similar.

I wish the Star-Advertiser would do a feature of the impact of the PVSA of 1886 and it’s impact on the Hawaii tourism market. The impact of both laws are identical.

  62. mo808 December 1, 2012 10:56 am

Kennedy Tulimasealii is a great recruit. Great addition to the guys coming back like Moses Samia and Calen Friel. Cannot forget David Moala. Hope he makes it to the Manoa campus. Add DEs Charles Tua’au and Iuta Tepa, DL should be real solid next season.

  69. NYUHTX December 1, 2012 11:16 am

All for Teo winning the Heisman. It’s good for all Hawai’i kids to see that they can accomplish big things – at home, or away. I’m sure he has lots of school work to do before heading off to New York.

Georgia blew it. Terrible clock management. Murray had brain lock. They had time enough for 3 more plays if they spiked the ball on 1st down. Instead they didn’t stop the clock at all and time ran out. Stupid.

I don’t care but maybe somebody else except Bama would play for the championship. Would have liked to see the Ducks myself.

  103. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2012 2:47 pm

Good luck and congrats to the seniors! May the future be even better!

  109. madeinhawaii December 1, 2012 3:20 pm

Geeze.. the Wahine came roaring back in the second half only to lose by 1 point to a good Utah team. Girls are showing a lot of promise.

  110. madeinhawaii December 1, 2012 3:22 pm

Now can the men close the gap?

  111. gobows December 1, 2012 3:24 pm

  113. cocobean December 1, 2012 3:35 pm

    A Grease.

Feeling are feelings. If that’s how you feel about Teo fine. You had already stated to the effect that you don’t have any Aloha for anyone the Warriors were recruiting that signed elsewhere.

I asked you this before but you didn’t answer. If you were Te’o’s parent what you have advised him to do?

  114. Shoko December 1, 2012 3:38 pm

Oh well, it was a valiant effort in the second half. Can’t come out flat and trail by 20 points and expect to win when you’re shooting 1-18 3 pointers.

  115. cocobean December 1, 2012 3:43 pm

A plug for the feel good girls.

No other team has evoked more pride than the Na Wahine. Over the years till now they’ve given me more “proud to be from Hawaii” moments than all the other programs combined.

Give it your best shot tonight, leave it all on the floor. Win or lose, thanks for representing Hawaii so well.

  116. cocobean December 1, 2012 3:55 pm

  120. Moocher December 1, 2012 4:13 pm

staying home to play for UH is an individual decision.

going away to play ball is an individual decision.

maybe coaches should tell local guys stay here for the first 2 years. we’ll put you on speed and strength programs, play you, you dip your feet in college life, and go into it easy easy. and at the end of 2 years, if you like things-stay. if you don’t, i (chow) have connections and can get you almost any school you want.

i think if a coach told me this i’d see a much easier transition and growth period for my son-i’d be more comfortable. the big name school and dreams are still there-but at least we get first crack. main thing is during that time-the first 2 years, better make sure we get soap.

i hope south alabama really got to enjoy their trip to hawaii, most of them will never be here again.

  128. Garret December 1, 2012 4:47 pm

Just got back from watching the UH basketball game at UNLV with Momo and Mrs. Momo. The crowd sure got scared during UH’s … but I was impressed with how loud they were. Great job by the team to never giving up and having a great comeback. If those 3pters had gone down with the down 8, UH could have won.

You really make it appear so easy with your presentation however I in finding this matter to be actually one thing which I think I would by no means understand. It seems too complex and very wide for me. I’m taking a look ahead in your subsequent put up, I will attempt to get the hang of it!

  153. Muoi Carlington December 1, 2012 6:14 pm

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification appeared to be at the web the simplest factor to have in mind of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed at the same time as folks consider worries that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also outlined out the entire thing with no need side effect , other people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thank you

  162. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2012 6:49 pm

    Good defensive first half!

Very questionable clock management at the end of the half.

  163. MattO December 1, 2012 6:50 pm

Can someone explain why we didn’t a) try to get in field goal range and b) use our last time out w/ over 40 seconds left on the clock????

Congrats Seniors! Good game tonight. I thought we would see another QB but I guess Coach Chow has decided SS is the man to defend the QB position against Taylor Graham.

  210. Its like you learn my mind! You seem to know a lot approximately this, like you wrote the guide in it or something. I believe that you just could do with some p.c. to pressure the message house a little bit, but instead of that, that is fantastic blog. A great read. I will definitely be back.

  211. NYUHTX December 1, 2012 9:33 pm

Some real tragedies this year with alcohol. Alema Tachibana burned a year. Caymen lost his opportunity to compete. And we may have seen why Colt didn’t make it in the NFL. The point being drinking ruins careers.

This season exposed the true character of us all as fans. This season weeded out the weak, the weary, the fair weather fans who couldnt stomach losing. This season showed our true colors. Fans who grumbled about Chow, the QB’s, the play calling, Chow, the coaching staff, demanded the firing of Chow…

But… For those very few of you, that despite all the heartache and disappointment, the constant negativity displayed on this blog, you stuck it out, kept it positive, who saw the bigger picture- I commend you most. May you be an example to others who come to this blog so they may see that through it all we stuck together as one. We solid. Together we can get through adversity. Victories and championships will come. When they do it’ll be Glorious!!! Together we will enjoy the journey and celebrate as one!!

Good job team!! Good job hardcore UH fans. Excellent job Tsaikos!!!

Already looking forward to next week Monday to see who”s serious to begin their training for next year!!

  225. Gsky December 1, 2012 11:58 pm

Lord I hope this is the last time the Duke bench warmer throws the pigskin for our Warriors. I know he has one more year, but God almighty, I hope Graham and/or Zwahlen (if they do end up getting him) can solidify that position and push SS back to the end of the bench. JMHO

    GO WARRIORS!

  229. SteveM December 2, 2012 12:37 am

The 2012 football season on the field has ended.

The seasons come and go, but the Tsai-kos who enjoy the 5 F’s are a constant.

    Same-o, same-o for 6 years

    Same-o next season too.

The basic 5 F’s keep us together today… just as it brought us together 6 years ago.

  230. AlaWai December 2, 2012 12:39 am

I witnessed an O-Line lacking in depth, lose its mojo in the second half. Did not execute and fire out in half#2. Hope the off season will bring an agressive training schedule for these young men, and a recruiting effort to get more of them to spell the weary. Good win for the Warriors. Too bad for the “fans” who were not there the last two weeks. The stadium lights may have flickered, but the “light bulb” illuminated.

  231. Feste private roma December 2, 2012 12:45 am

I used to be suggested this blog via my cousin. I am not sure whether or not this publish is written via him as nobody else recognise such precise about my trouble. You are wonderful! Thanks!

  232. Wes'side Warrior December 2, 2012 3:36 am

    Morning, Gang!

Gratz to da Warriors! We were listening, and then with 10:-something left in the 4th, (I think), we lost connection with ESPN1420. Tried refreshing, relogging, shutting down and restarting… nothing happened.

Got really slow and drawn out in the second half. (Or at least the 3rd and part of the 4th that we heard). Looking forward to next season, definitely!

Wish we had better news on the rest of the Athletics-front.

Nonetheless, mahalo to all our student-athletes who give their all each and every day, to represent us, our school, our state, and themselves!

Counting down the time for when we’ll be back home!

    Aloha, Gang!

    This is just the beginning!

  240. maddog50 December 2, 2012 5:47 am

Ending with a win is always good….great group of seniors….worst officiating in one game in forever…missed facemask call, reversed a fumble, hit by Jackson clean, their guys tackling our D on every play…gotta like Joey, and Gregory….Laurel, Woodard, and Yap. Lots to look forward to….Go Warriors. I too can do without the persoanl attacks on players and coaches, will always be positive—Go Warriors, again!

  241. d1shima December 2, 2012 5:54 am

  243. 99club December 2, 2012 6:28 am

Mahalo Warriors for your hard work and determination this season! You’ve got this program going in the right direction. Next year at this time you’ll have BYU and the Hawaii Bowl yet to play.

The MWC schedule will hopefully be out on March 1st, if past releases are an indication. Sept 14th in Vegas?

    99club,

Hmmm…one problem is that puts the team on the mainland for two consecutive weeks again.

Of course, that is probably good news for Panda Travel!

Good Morning Folks! That was a tough battle last night against USA and the zebras too, but the Warriors and coaching staff still gave us a “W”! Thank you to all the graduating Warriors! To all those returning Warriors–work hard in the off season! Next year will be better! We’ll be there for you cheering and believing!

Great finish to a challenging season. Congrats and mahalo to all Warriors, especially our Seniors. We have the core of a good team for next season, lots of young, talented players coming back!

Good to see Jackson getting those carries, sorry he had injuries… the guy is a difference maker. Paipai Falemalu – pure heart, fighting through injuries to finish strong. Schroeder’s jersey ripped open at the back – talk about visual metaphor. Lots of great memories…

Agree with d1 – next season, “We Chase Championships”.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

What a big difference it makes to WIN to close the season. CONGRATULATIONS! Less than 9 months until SC comes into town!!! It’s going to be a fabulous celebration of our Warriors tonight at the Nā Koa Awards Lū‘au.

Just a hint, if you have some money under a mattress this holiday season and need to make a year-end donation, Nā Koa is an excellent choice. 😉 Donations go to helping our Warriors to go summer school, football camps and other needs not covered by the general budget.

Gratz to the Wahine for a great season. They’ll come back stronger next year. Thanks to the ladies for repping Hawai’i so well. As for the NCAA seeding committee… I don’t need to say what every Hawai’i fan is thinking.

    d1-

You’re right, of course. Back-to-back road games would be tough. Right now it looks like we’ll both get 13 games and two byes which hopefully will give them flexibility in the schedule (the byes). There’s supposed to be a music festival in Vegas in the ‘fall of 2013,’ that’s supposed to be pretty big. It’d be neat if it was at the same time as the UH game!

Aloha Seniors, you have stuck it out with coach Chow, some did not finish the way you have hoped fo, being that Run & shoot never materialize and for Shereton bowl People whom have provided a bowl Game just for Uh

    Fans!!!!

    Warriors Delivered!.

➡ Mahalo Seniors for finishing STRONG.

➡ For the returning Warriors…work hard, train harder.

➡ Tsaiko Nation…keep those 5 F’s in a safe place until SC comes to town.

Always good to end the season on a winning note…..with a 2-game winning streak, but JMHO that how this whole off-season (i.e., recruiting, coaching staff changes, player roster changes, off-the-field player discipline issues, etc.) goes from now…..through Spring Ball and next summer….will probably be a good indication of how much the Warrior players have bought-in (or not)…..to the coaching staff and their philosophies & methods…..to indicate to what degree the team dynamic…..particularly among the offensive coaches and players…..will improve (or not)…..and translate to the field for next season’s home season opener against SC.

Gotta say Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo to our Tsai-ko ohana for responding to a young fan’s broken heart. The short version: One of our Pop Warner players, whose dad serves in the Navy and lives at PMRF,had the greatest football experience of his life last week at the Military Night UNLV game. He came home with a souvenier green foam shaka that was autographed by two of his favorite players. Before he knew it, the family dog reduced his treasure to shreds and his joy turned to sadness.

This became known to the Tsai-kos on facebook and a few of them responded and coordinated an effort to bring joy back to this young fan and his family. It should be noted that the young man and his team was sitting near one of the Tsai-kos during the UNLV game and their interest and focus on the game rather then fooling around made a big impression. Mahalo to all who jumped in… And especially to the Stutzmann Ohana for their kokua. For me, this is what football is all about. It’s all about “the kids”.

    Go Warriors!
