Game Day: Fresno State
Big game for the Warriors in what probably will be their last one in Fresno.
It’s a shame the relationship will end when the Bulldogs leave the WAC in 2011 or 2012. There’s nothing like a UH-Fresno State event in Fresno. The Bulldog fans are a lot of fun. I remember back in the day in basketball. Music starts playing, then the Bulldogs jog out of the locker, high-fiving the fans in the front row while circling the court. It was kind of surreal to see those elderly fans clapping in rhythm while Chris Herren skipped by. A lot of fans in a lot of places whine about the officiating the entire game. Not Bulldog fans. They’ll heckle opponents the entire game. It’s just not the same at other venues.

In the hotel lobby, the UH cheerleaders practiced their routines this morning. Twelve cheerleaders made the trip, with some alumni joining the squad for today’s game.

One of the UH players came down with flu-like symptoms yesterday, forcing his roommate to relocate to another hotel room. UH thinks it has contained the situation.

Na Koa’s Ben Yee — whose flat-top style is as sharp as the toothpick hanging from his mouth — was forced to miss this trip after suffering from a bad cold. It’s just not a road trip without Ben. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Mahalo from the both of us for the good wishes. I am on my way to Geovanni Pastrami to watch the game while DrDoc will join us after wrapping up an all-day conference at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on community health centers – he’s the board treasurer for the Waimanalo Health Center.
Usually we split the diff between our b’days but decided to do two this year so on Thursday we went to a presentation on invasive species in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands and then went to dinner at Cha Cha Salsaria in Hawaii Kai. Good food, good prices and a really nice location.
Today we’ll be watching the UH/Fresno game – hint, hint boys – how about a nice present!!
BTW – John Lennon would have turned 70 today. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janice Joplin would each be 68 on their next birthdays in November, December & January respectively and Otis Redding would have celebrated his 69th birthday a month ago today.

I saw that NMSU beat UNM, which is good for them. I checked out the box score and drive log from that game, and I must say that that must’ve been a horrible game to watch, no disrespect intended to either team or their fans.
NMSU racked up 189 yards in total offense, but still won the game. Fourteen punts combined between the two teams. Unfortunately, I think this may be the only win NMSU gets all year, given the pace they’re maturing at.

What a great overall effort. Nice way to send FSU packing to the Mountain West. Special teams still needs to tighten up, but even with a somewhat ragged offense at times they still put up the points. D played great. Gave up two big plays, but besides that they really executed well.
I think the game ball goes to the offensive line though. Terrific effort by the guys in the trenches.

The drive to end the first half was big, and that might have given the team some momentum heading into halftime.
The 3rd quarter was amazing and started perfectly–TD, INT, TD. Fresno State was the one having trouble in the red zone and UH was converting. Wow.
Great turnovers by the defense. Great job by Moniz evading the pass rush and making plays. Great runs after the catch, especially by Pollard and Salas.
This win is huge for UH. It should get a much bigger crowd for the Nevada game ($$ for UHAD) and gives the team a huge boost going into that game. Win that game and the BSU game is probably the WAC title game…which means that ESPN would definitely add it.

Watched the game at Giovanni’s with SailorBlue, Janice, WassupDoc and DoctorDoc. The food was good but I didn’t enjoy watching the game there, just to loud with other games going on an a lot of conversations going on. But that’s just me. I would pass on it for watching UH games. For the most part the special teams did good! … I think we had one 10 man situation where the 11th man came running in and got an illegal motion penalty in the 4th qtr… We had a personal foul too, I think.. which led to excellent field position for Fresno on the ensuing kick off. Gotta watch that!
Opposing defenses have to make a “pick your poison” decision each week; cover Pilares and Salas gets open or vice versa. They can’t easily double team them both! Our other receivers make the plays too! And Green can make them pay if they play the pass to hard.

al, I tink you’re right…Heffernan made the difference in the reduction of hamstring injuries. The guys told me last year that stretching should prevent hammie problems, but did they do their pre-practice stretching? Welllll…..they were supposed to… it was up to them to make sure they did. But I think Coach Tommy got them to be more disciplined and they do their pre-practice stretching, at least ST has told me & others tell me the players are on the field before practice.

I actually have always like Pat Hill. Too bad he’s under so much pressure there at Fresno. I don’t think that he’s going to last very long. He has tons of real good football players nearby. But California has four big schools that take all of the tier 1A talent. Tier 1B and tier 2 then go to major out-of-state programs. Fresno, San Diego State, and San Jose are left with the tier three and lower division one football recruits.

I’m glad that Salas played well for the NFL scouts. There were a few things that he did that really increased his value. He exhibited physical toughness when he ran over a corner near the left sideline. He exhibited dogged, determination and refused to be denied on his first touchdown. He showed great awareness and desire when he recovered that fumble in the endzone for a touchdown. He showed great hands when he made several difficult passes in traffic. He also had glimpses of very deceptive speed. I’m very happy for him.
Last bit that I think is important… summary of the Nevada-SJSU contest praises DE Dontay Moch, like how Fresno State’s DE’s were being trumpeted. O-Line has their work cut out for them every week too.

MW. The fact that Coach Rolo ran the ball for 30% of the plays was abig help to the offensive line. That 30 to 70 ratio of run to pass plays will be a big help for the offensive line next week.
I think, for the players that those scouts came to watch, they all did a good job of raising their stock. We just need to continue this forward momentum.

We’re getting into the meat of the schedule. Offensive line has a lot of work to do. They’ve been just getting by so for this season. The O-line has been playing just good enough to get by, they need to do a lot better job as the temas that we play get better. The O-line has been lucky so far that the skill positions have kept us in the hunt.

Well, since we basically had to rebuild our O-Line, I thought it might be our weakest link this year. To me, they’ve been better than anticipated. Yes, they have lots of work to do, but they are coming along well.

Coach Shaw is a new addition. If he stays with us for many, many years, his teachings will carry over, year to year. Then, we can expect that perfection. Right now, I’m just happy they are giving Moniz the necessary time. They are getting better.
What year was it that we ranked dead last in giving up sacks? I think it was after Coach Jones left. We’re heading in the right direction.

Most of the Warriors experienced the six game losing streak during the 2009 season. Sicne then the Warriors are 8 and 3 over the last eleven game. Winning football games is beginning to become a habit.
Of the three losses, the Warriors were actual very much in the hunt for a win in two of those games. Wisconsin was the onlt team to really beat us. Against USC and Colorado, we beat ourselves. We are getting to a point to where we are good enough to beat anybody. We just to make sure that we don’t beat ourselves.
Winning begets winning.
And how about Blount? He’s got this great vision on returns. Now, if only we can stop the penalties!

You’re right MW, it is good to see the swarming defense. I really do hope that Aaron Brown can stay healthy, we will need him down the stretch. What I like is that more players are stepping forward to make big plays every week. We seem to have less and less situations where guys are waiting around too see if someone is going to make a big play. What you’d rather have are guys competing with each other and out-doing each other. Silva challenging Bryant to make another interception. Brown chalenging Falemalu to get a sack. Paredes challenging everyon on defense to make more tackles than he does. Pilares challenging Salas to break his single game receptions record. The offensive teasing Pilares for dropping passes. Moniz challenging his offensive line to keep him off of his back. Rolo challenging the whole offense to be scoree a touchdown ever time they’re in the red zone. Aranda challenging the whole defense to hold teams to under 120 yards rushing.

Actually, the last game I went to in Vegas was maybe about 6 years ago. Went with my Dad. Stayed at the Cal. Got our tickets through the UHAD website online.
Rode the bus from the Cal to the stadium, and sat way up in the nosebleed section.
Coach Wallace was right in front of us with his family.
I was yelling so much, he turned around and asked me why he hasn’t seen me at any home games. Told him I now lived in Michigan, but I’d for sure be there at every game if I was back home.
I swear… someone that looks like JMxxxx was sitting right in back of me with a couple of guys. But, of course, I didn’t know any of you guys back then, so I can’t know for sure.

I said on last weeks blog that UH’s Dline wasn’t raising their hands to deflect, block or even redirect the qb’s passes. Hanohano got one. Right on! He missed on another and someone else tried to block a pass. We don’t see this enough on the Dline but an improvement over nothing. When was the last time that Hawaii blocked a pass? I don’t think we even attempted to raise our hands as the QB was throwing the ball. Not this year anyway.

Nebraska preseason ranking was 8th and they have been up and down since then. I think rankings are not only about wins, but how other teams above and below you perform. I think thats what dictates alot of movement in the rankings. However, I will say that Nebraskas SOS thus far is probably the weakest as far as the Top Ten polls goes.

Great win last night, but you cannot rest on your laurels and hardy. Does anybody know what our record is after we come home from a road trip. In one of the WAC’s most bitter rivalries, the home team has struggled gaining an advantage. Hawaii defeated Fresno State 49-27 on Saturday night getting revenge for the Dogs’ 42-17 win last season at Aloha Stadium. The visiting team has won the last three games in the series which began in 1938.
Bryant Moniz, the nation’s leader in passing and total offense, threw for 376 yards as Hawaii racked up 472 yards of offense to lead the Warrior attack.
Fresno State (3-2, 1-1) got 211 yards and two touchdowns passing from Ryan Colburn, who was intercepted three times and sacked three times.
