Willis Wilson (1992-2013)

ww-215x300

Running back Willis Wilson apparently drowned off Sandy’s this morning.

He was among a group of three men and two women who were wading in shallow water this morning. After a while, they noticed he was missing. HFD and Coast Guard rescuers were summoned. Wilson’s body was recovered at dawn.

Wilson transferred from Washington this past summer. He was on the travel roster for the first three road games. This past Monday, he rushed nine times for 115 yards and two touchdowns in an intrasquad scrimmage.

More than his football skills, Wilson was an engaging person who entertained with his dancing and bubbly personality.

He was a second-generation Warrior — his father Jack Wilson Jr. played in the 1980s — who had fondness for his school.

After the scrimmage, he told the WB: “I love it here, I love everybody here.”

He will be missed.

Word on the boulevard: For today’s regular-season finale, the Rainbow Warriors will be wearing their retro uniforms again.

When battling Army, the best strategy is to go with a natural competitor.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

GMA and DPK – up early and ready to “submit comment”,are you? (Irish dialect).

ST = nice feature article. See the vultures are hanging around making comments there. I wonder if those that “will not buy tickets” realize that tickets support to a great extent the Stadium Authority and not the UH.

If they feel that strongly, they can always send their $$$ to UH and specify that it is for the volleyball team, softball team, sailing, golf or whatever. That way there are truly supporting the UH Athletes in some manner.

UH should start an on-campus stadium fund raising drive. The late Gov Burns is turning in his grave over how the State’s DAGS is nickel and diming the UH AD.

Colorado has a true freshman starting at QB, Sefo Liufau from Seattle. Good size at 6.4 215 and shows a lot of poise for a true freshman.

A sad day for the Warrior Ohana. We send healing energy to the Wilson Ohana.
Seems like a very nice young man and taken too early.

On another note, nice article by ST today. I like this quote from Scott Harding, maybe the MVP this year….”Were obviously a better team. The record doesn’t show that but you’d have to be stupid not to see were a better overall team…..”

Hope some peeps will understand the quote and chill a little.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  56. Just Asking November 30, 2013 11:18 am

I understand Harding’s frustration with public criticism about the team. But it is weak to respond to criticism of this year’s performance by limiting the comparison to last year’s team.
We are one of the worst teams in the country this year. Not the worst, but one of the worst. Not just talking about the record, but overall performance. Close losses, sure, but against some mediocre teams. It isn’t much of a consolation to be told that only the stupid wouldn’t see that last year’s team was obviously worse.
Yes, the team is fighting hard every game. But does anyone think that we were better than any of our opponents this year? Are we better than the 2011 team that got the coach fired? 2010? 2009? 2008?
Of course we are better than our 0-12 team. But that comparison misses the point. The competition has improved across the board. High schools teams today resemble college teams of 10-15 years ago. Mid-majors are much stronger than before. If we want to be successful, the measuring stick isn’t last year’s embarrassment or VonAppen’s dismal swan song, it is the competition.

  57. Huh? November 30, 2013 11:19 am

    RIP Willis Wilson. To young.

Not to sound mean, but what is a player doing at the beach during the wee hours of the morning on game day?

Wow. What tragic news. Condolences to the Wilson family.

  73. tommui November 30, 2013 12:19 pm

Scott Harding is a junior. If he is going to compare this year’s team, he can only compare it to the teams that he actually knows. Obviously he is not able to compare it to, say 2010, 2009 or even 1933!

And how many teams has UH played this year bowl-eligible? I don’t think those teams are Sisters of the Poor.

    Give it a rest!

  74. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2013 12:21 pm

    So sad =(.

    #WinIt4Wilson

  75. NorthShoreFan November 30, 2013 12:25 pm

Some peeps have issues with the TEAM which is Usually comprised of players and coaches. Some feel it is solely on coaches as far as how a team performs. That is ok, but to “slow burn” on that only is counter productive. Last I heard, you win as a team and you lose as a team. Used to be called “team work”.
Anyhoo, I digressed too much…..IMUA WARRIORS!

  76. NorthShoreFan November 30, 2013 12:27 pm

..and when you experience a loss of a teammate, you hurt as a team….

  77. shadow November 30, 2013 12:32 pm

Man, just terrible news. My prayers and condolences to the Wilson ohana.

  78. jonj November 30, 2013 12:36 pm

    65 marleysdad

Unless your part of the 64 players in the Hotel… your not gonna play!

  79. kev-1 November 30, 2013 1:01 pm

So sad about Wilson. Condolences to the family. I think what Marley’s dad is questioning is not why he wasn’t at the hotel with the team, but rather why was he in the water at 4:30 in the morning. Which in the grand scheme of things just doesn’t matter. He was out doing what college aged students do. Just a tragic event.

No doubt, this game is the the dub dub.

  80. kev-1 November 30, 2013 1:01 pm

    That should read . . .

This game is for the dub dub.

  81. gobows November 30, 2013 1:02 pm

condolences to the family of willis wilson.

  82. RB November 30, 2013 1:02 pm

RIP Willis Wilson gone to soon. How ironic, Von Appen win less team lost a player due to drowning also. unreal!!!!

  83. Kevin November 30, 2013 1:03 pm

The pieces of SHIT are out and about trying to insinuate this on Chow…

Special place in hell for you dumbasses.

  84. kev-1 November 30, 2013 1:07 pm

84 . . . How dey figure that? Pure desperation if you ask me.

  85. kev-1 November 30, 2013 1:08 pm

BTW . . . dub dub is a reference to “WW” for those that want to read something else.

  86. PowderPuff November 30, 2013 1:09 pm

Condolences to Willis’ family and friends, especially those who were with him this morning. So many insensitive comments….a young man lost his life…good grief. Get a grip, people! Go ‘Bows!

  87. Boya_jr November 30, 2013 1:22 pm

Sad day. So much promise in Willis. RIP

  88. Marleysdad November 30, 2013 1:34 pm

Sorry about my previous question. Sad day for his Family, the teams, the fans.

’bout to roll out to the stadium.

This ones for you Willis. m/

  89. I ALL NUHA ALREADY November 30, 2013 1:54 pm

    Why?
Why am I not surprised at some of the insensitive non-sense that sometimes gets written?
A decent young man loses his life doing what kids do, nothing wrong mind you, just being a kid, thatʻs it. Others then rain on the sadness by asking some stupid questions.
Why wasnʻt he at the hotel? Why was he at the beach at such an hour?
    I mean, really?
Hereʻs a few answers for the ignorant, insensitive, few.
He wasnʻt on the hotel roster. Not every player is invited, mostly those who are expected to play dress out are taken to the team hotel on Friday night.
About the beach in the early morning on a game day, well, the young man wasnʻt one of the players expected to dress out tonight against Army. So why not just be young?

    Why?
Why is it there was always has to be fault and / or blame?

Rest in peace young man, blessing to your family and friends.

  90. Warrior Dave November 30, 2013 2:29 pm

Just had to add my deepest condolences to the parents, family and all that knew Willis. So tragic to lose someone so young. It always is…

  91. Babo November 30, 2013 2:36 pm

Did you watch Auburn and Alabama? Now THAT is a football game. Army vs. UH? What a joke it will be!!!!

    What a finish! Go AUBURN!

  92. PurpleMaple November 30, 2013 2:41 pm

    Auburn 34, Bama 28 !!! Wow !!!

  95. Marleysdad November 30, 2013 3:26 pm

89, really? You must not have seen the other comments that were deleted.

Just wondering why a PLAYER wasn’t with his TEAM when they have a GAME.

I got my answer. Relax. Go tell someone you love you love them.

  96. MCB November 30, 2013 4:26 pm

#95 – everyone is asking that question. Most have the sense and sensitivity not to ask it out loud at this point. Have some class.

  97. IronMen November 30, 2013 5:09 pm

condolence to the Wilson family; very sad indeed.

  98. IronMen November 30, 2013 5:09 pm

btw, does anyone know if there’s still parking available in the stadium? I’m leaving now.

  99. tommui November 30, 2013 5:12 pm

Perhaps everyone should have class and drop this discussion and just remember WW in your prayers and/or cheer for number 20 this evening.

    (Ne’Quan Phillips will wear No. 20 — Willis Wilson’s number — for today’s game)

  100. obachan November 30, 2013 5:29 pm

Lord, we ask that you would please comfort the Wilson family during their time of great loss.

my best and sympathies to the Wilson ohana.

  107. Hank November 30, 2013 6:49 pm

    Peace to you brother Willis.

  108. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 6:53 pm

Just saw the news flash on Willis… So sad.

  109. Whats up November 30, 2013 7:12 pm

Nice play call by Chow on 4th and goal and even nicer throw by Joey!

  110. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 7:22 pm

Iosefa has a QB rating of 438.4 based on a 1yd TD throw…

The only thing more mysterious than QB rating is Big Foot and Lockness monster.

    Straight for Wikipedia…
Passer rating in the NFL is on a scale from 0 to 158.3. Passing efficiency in college football is on a scale from -731.6 to 1261.6.

Makes me curious to know what it takes to have -731.6 in college. I’m assuming 1261.6 is achieved by multiple 99yard TD passes.

  111. Shoko November 30, 2013 7:29 pm

Haha, too funny. Pretty entertaining game so far.

  112. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2013 7:35 pm

Yep, Iosefa channeled his inner Tebow. Jump pass was a nice call after three straight no gains.

  113. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2013 7:36 pm

This stack defense is pretty effective, too.

  114. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 7:38 pm

Well, Pretty much everybody on offense is playing well. Defense doing ok so far.

Maybe it’s the opponent, maybe it’s Willis bringing UH some good mojo.

  115. Whats up November 30, 2013 7:49 pm

Trick Plays Galore so far by Norm Chow and Jordan Wynn. The D is doing a lot better so far too.

  116. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 7:51 pm

Wow… UNLV is putting the hammer down on SDSU… 31-7 mid-3rd quarter

  117. Shoko November 30, 2013 7:53 pm

Eeek, hope that fumble isn’t a momentum changer.

  118. Numba 1 Son November 30, 2013 7:56 pm

Congratulations. 1st Rainbow Warrior win of the season! I see good things happening next year!

  119. MattO November 30, 2013 8:05 pm

That was a fun 1st half.

This half so far… not so fun.

  120. Shoko November 30, 2013 8:05 pm

    Uhoh, third quarter blues?

  121. Buffoman November 30, 2013 8:05 pm

#118 you spoke too soon. Hawaii could lose their 12th.

  122. MattO November 30, 2013 8:09 pm

    Terrible flop. Ugh.

  123. Buffoman November 30, 2013 8:18 pm

#118 And there you go. We are back to where we were. May be early but momentum is definitely not with us.

  124. azwarrior22 November 30, 2013 8:19 pm

Another painful game to watch. How do you blow a 21 pt lead ???

  125. MattO November 30, 2013 8:21 pm

    Gant. Bringin’ it.

  126. oneseason November 30, 2013 8:22 pm

Lets Go Bows! It’s tied up, but you can get it rolling again and win!

  127. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 8:30 pm

Is Kaumeyer fired yet? Good grief…

At least the offense got going again to score and re-take lead.

  128. Whats up November 30, 2013 8:30 pm

I’m starting to think the refs are calling in favor of Army.

  129. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 8:31 pm

I see the bachi boy is back…

  130. MattO November 30, 2013 8:32 pm

    Joey with some terrific cuts!

  131. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 8:35 pm

130… The only way football is going away is if TV ratings drop to where it doesn’t make sense for tv networks to air it.

If you’re against football being played, stop watching. If enough people stop watching, then it’ll go away.

  132. MattO November 30, 2013 8:36 pm

14 pt response – love the heart!!

  133. Shoko November 30, 2013 8:36 pm

    Think Warriors have regained momentum.

  134. Shoko November 30, 2013 8:41 pm

    Unreal with the PFs.

  135. wafan November 30, 2013 8:41 pm

30 yards of penalties in one play. Geez.

  136. wafan November 30, 2013 8:42 pm

Good to play with emotion but gotta be smarter than that.

    Come on, ‘Bows!

  137. MattO November 30, 2013 8:42 pm

Calling the body-slam, okay. Calling that little shove was BS.

  138. Whats up November 30, 2013 8:44 pm

Yep, the refs are in favor of Army big time. I watched games all day and those call for personal foul unsportsmanlike penalty are BS compared to earlier games today.

  139. azwarrior22 November 30, 2013 8:46 pm

This team is too undisciplined. Too many personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct is killing us…keeps drives alive.

  140. Kanole November 30, 2013 8:47 pm

    130

    What? Jiminy crickets!

  141. Shoko November 30, 2013 8:48 pm

That wasn’t the first shove of the game. Once the officials pick up on that, they’re going to start calling that stuff to send the message.

  142. Buffoman November 30, 2013 8:48 pm

#139 knowing that we’ll get flagged for sneezing we should just be smarter.

  143. Whats up November 30, 2013 8:48 pm

Warriors going to have to win without the refs calling a fair game.

  144. kifi November 30, 2013 9:01 pm

What’s the score? How much time in the game?

  145. Shoko November 30, 2013 9:01 pm

Good job by Lakaka on the block.

  146. Shoko November 30, 2013 9:03 pm

    35-49 9:50 left.

  147. kifi November 30, 2013 9:03 pm

    Who’s winning?

  148. Shoko November 30, 2013 9:04 pm

    Warriors ahead in the fourth.

  149. kifi November 30, 2013 9:04 pm

    We have 49?

  150. kifi November 30, 2013 9:04 pm

    Thanks Shoko.

  151. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 9:15 pm

At least UH is forcing Army to burn a lot of clock on this drive…

  152. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 9:22 pm

Really, a 42 yard pass given up on 4th and 8??? I know Army doesn’t pass a whole heck of a lot, but come on man… It’s 4th and long and they don’t have time to run every play at this point of the game… How the F do you give up a big pass play?

Is it too much to ask for to play a soft zone in that situation? If they get 10 or 12 to pick it up, that’s fine because that forces Army to run more clock with 2 scores to go. Just unbelievable lack of situational awareness by Kaumeyer on his defensive play calling. The one thing you cannot allow is a quick score in that situation and Kaumeyer just let it happen…

  153. Former UH Athlete November 30, 2013 9:24 pm

It’s hold on to your butts time at Aloha Stadium…

Warriors get 1 win. 1-11 is better than 0-12 I guess.

  162. Shoko November 30, 2013 9:31 pm

    Finally!

Man, brutal season but I’m glad Warriors didn’t go 0-12.

Mahalo to all the seniors for the dedication and hard work all these years. Wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

  163. justinlurkin November 30, 2013 9:35 pm

    Whew,

Avoided being the only FBS program to have two, winless seasons in its history… I think?

“W” W.W. A Win for Willis Wilson. This one for you. R.I.P.

  174. Slugger December 1, 2013 12:12 am

Congratulations to the team! Congratulations to the Seniors! Wish I could be there at graduation for you.

Willis was an inspiration tonight. I still have tears. As Bulla says, Make memories, make memories, make memories…

    Looking forward to next season.

    GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  175. obachan December 1, 2013 12:30 am

    Won one for Willis.

  176. Btn225 December 1, 2013 12:35 am

Was disappointed with the band. To have Army Join UH after the game and have the band play the UH Fight Song instead of the Alma Mater was disrespectful to Army.

I did like the first offensive play. Scott Harding comes off the field and they play with 10 players in a sort of missing man formation to honor their fallen teammate.

  177. PowderPuff December 1, 2013 12:59 am

Congratulations to the Rainbows tonight. I’m sure Willis is smiling somewhere. It’s December…hug your loved ones. Only a month more and we’re into next year. And a mere 9 months away from the UW Huskies!
