Game day

SEATTLE — The Warriors appear to be ready after following their usual game-day routine: Breakfast (which actually precedes the wake-up call), team meeting, voluntary chapel and the pre-game meal. Yes, it’s chicken and pasta. Again.

* * * * *

Backup quarterback Shane Austin’s parents had booked plane tickets to Seattle months in advance, when it appeared their son would be one of the top three quarterbacks. When he was listed as No. 4 during the preseason, they were supposed to have canceled their flight. But they didn’t — and it turned out to be a beneficial oversight. After No. 2 quarterback Brent Rausch suffered a finger injury during Thursday’s practice, Austin was summoned from Honolulu. Austin arrived in Seattle last night, as did his parents.

* * * * *

A member of the UH party decided, as a gag, to hit all of the buttons on the elevator. Thing is, he forgot to get off. He stopped on every floor. I suppose that’s the same thing as sending yourself pizzas as a prank.

* * * * *

Yes, that’s Leon Wright-Jackson pictured lounging on the beach in his UH uniform as part of the Sporting News’ center spread.

* * * * *

OK, it’s time to get new clothes. Ferd and I could not figure out how to get into Qwest Field yesterday. We went to the lobby entrance, but the door was locked. But wait. A guy waved to us, raced over and opened the door. When we asked for directions to the field, he said, sorry, but this was the United Way’s Homeless Mission Project.

Anybody that bought the road games on PPV having problems setting up the recording?

When I try to set up, it says I must buy first. If I try to buy, it says not available for purchase yet.

When we call Oceanic, they tell us that the SD and HD channels are reversed and they are in the process of fixing.

Am I getting a run around?

  29. SteveM September 12, 2009 10:24 am

    “…a time to be reapin…

Gotta do my breathing exercises. 😆 See some of you at lunchtime. Since it’s noonish Saturday, the other parking lots have their businesses open yet. But King Street is OK both sides tpday (but check the signs)

  31. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 10:25 am

    AUstin and Moniz,

I knew they were close to playing. IDK about rausch already, he looked like the coaches wanted he to be the man, but he neva step up. one year later, he still a little shy of what they want. time to move on.

    MOniz or Austin.

Gut says Moniz, but mind says Austin.

  122. royvic September 12, 2009 1:46 pm

been watching kia, and it’s like watching a different a different player. what a different technique. on pass blocking he’s up closer to the line, and he’s not as retreating /backpeddaling into the QB line of vision. instead on some plays he’s taking the defender to his left, away from greg. on running plays kia blocking his man.

  123. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 1:46 pm

Alex Green should’ve been out at the 2? Kekaula: “Too late now baby!” 😛 Poor WSU can’t get a break. But for us Warrior fans, so far, that 9:30PM replay is gonna be sweet.

  174. Jay September 12, 2009 2:06 pm

    WOOOHOOO!

  175. […] Here is the original post:  The Warrior Beat| UH football, University of Hawaii athletics … […]

  176. Rich2176 September 12, 2009 2:07 pm

Thanks 99club. Had 4 birdies, but a couple of holes ate me up. Took a double bogey on the first hole, and a triple on #8. Then, last hole was a par 3 island green. Crushed a 6 iron 160 yards straight to the pin into the wind, but the wind won and ball ended up in the water. Took double bogey on that also. All in all, a great score on a very hard course.

Gonna miss you in Vegas next week!

  177. Unkanesson September 12, 2009 2:07 pm

    Howzit Tsaiko Nation!!
    Holy Quap!! This is UNREAL!!
Listening to Bobby and Robert on the internet radio.
Hearing the crowd (of Warrior fans) cheering the Hawai’i TD’s!!
    TD Green!!
Can’t wait to see the replay on K5 tonight.
    Meanwhile, I’M LOVIN’ IT!!
Okay so they’ve already outdone my prediction (34-10). Ainokea!!
    GO WARRIORS!!

  178. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 2:08 pm

    Hawaii is playing great.

its like we went to Florida, except we’re on the opposite side of the bad news.

  179. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 2:08 pm

    KEEP THE PRESSURE ON MACK!!

You want to build for the future? You want your reserves to get GAME-TIME reps??

Keep scoring and it will happen!!!

  180. G (China) September 12, 2009 2:08 pm

Hope we get to see some sacks in the game too!! Be a good boost for our linebackers and D line as well as for UH’s scholarship fund.

  181. J-Dog September 12, 2009 2:09 pm

    Spencer Smith

    Here comes the BOOM!

  182. LizKauai (iPhone) September 12, 2009 2:09 pm

no slacking guyz. no slacking off on da ball. 60 full minutes

  184. losthawaiian September 12, 2009 2:10 pm

Rich, I just had a “heated” discussion with a supervisor at directv and let them know that i think it’s BS that they list the game in the programming guide all week and then black it out on game day. I guess all we can do is to enjoy it on the internet. Congrats on the golf win, see you all next week in Vegas.

  185. Matt September 12, 2009 2:10 pm

    INT Mana Silva.

  186. Matt September 12, 2009 2:10 pm

Greg Alexander fumbles inside the 5. WSU recovers and returns to around the 30. 1st mistake for the Warriors.

  193. BowsForever September 12, 2009 2:14 pm

    Dear Greg:

    SLIDE.

    Regards,

    A fan.

  194. Ronnie September 12, 2009 2:15 pm

Seems like it should be the 4th quarter at least – with all the action in this game so far!

  195. J-Dog September 12, 2009 2:15 pm

Kiesel-Kauhane is a CAPTAIN. No excuse for a personal foul.

  196. Rich2176 September 12, 2009 2:16 pm

lost – I agree. We spend so much for the service and have no other alternative to watch the game. Such BS. I just tried to tune into ESPN for the USC/Ohio game and it’s blacked out. I can’t find it anywhere else. Go figure….lol

Hope you’re gonna be thirsty next week…lol

  197. BowsForever September 12, 2009 2:16 pm

Warriors, with a 35-0 lead, I’d like to see you pretend it’s still 7-0. Will you win the game? At this point…probably. But you gotta play clean. Ball security, don’t give up big plays.

  198. LizKauai (iPhone) September 12, 2009 2:16 pm

Great play-calling. Just gotta hold on.

Now gotta settle down and keep momentum.

  208. J-Dog September 12, 2009 2:20 pm

I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY OUR CORNERS PLAY 8-10 YARDS OFF THE RECEIVER.

  209. BowsForever September 12, 2009 2:21 pm

D showing some weakness this series, then again we have a HUGE cushion. Good time for some halftime adjustments, I’d say.

  210. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 2:21 pm

What the hell is this message from the blog???

“Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!”

  225. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 2:28 pm

  226. TChahng [오키나와] September 12, 2009 2:29 pm

  227. Ronnie September 12, 2009 2:29 pm

    Oh oh! Another fumble…

Time to settle down for the offense. I know we can do it!

  228. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 2:29 pm

    is his arm coming forward?

  229. Stan Manley September 12, 2009 2:29 pm

    Alexander, please be a quarterback.

  230. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 2:30 pm

Get Greg out of there, we are UP by 30+!!!!

2 fumbles already, have him sit and THINK about it.

  231. LizKauai (iPhone) September 12, 2009 2:30 pm

    Nice tackle!

It was supposed to be a pass but oh well.

  232. Ronnie September 12, 2009 2:31 pm

Thank goodness for the holding call against WSU.

  233. J-Dog September 12, 2009 2:32 pm

I don’t understand why we continue to play WSU’s receivers soft, and sometimes leave a receiver uncovered??

  234. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 2:32 pm

    Okay,

gotta talk to Greg during the half.

    anyways, Liz’s fault. 😀

saying the offense stay all pooped. 😆

  235. Ronnie September 12, 2009 2:32 pm

    Go BIG D!!!!

  236. Matt September 12, 2009 2:33 pm

4th down WSU. Good job defense.

  237. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 2:33 pm

    protect the ball Alexander.

okay, you don’t have to get 80 yards rushing.

  238. Matt September 12, 2009 2:34 pm

WSU field goal. 35-6 Warriors. Alexander hold on to the darn ball.

  239. Stan Manley September 12, 2009 2:34 pm

I think Alexander wants to make the game interesting. Someone, please let him know he’s doing a good job.

  240. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:34 pm

Greg Alexander has scored again for WSU.

  241. Ronnie September 12, 2009 2:35 pm

I wonder if RK watched the Steelers game on Thursday! That pass with 7 sec left in the half almost cost them 7 points!!!

  242. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 2:36 pm

Now Greg, see what can happen when you DO NOT TAKE CARE OF THE BALL!?

  243. Matt September 12, 2009 2:37 pm

One running play and that is it for the half. End of the 1st half 35-6 Warriors.

  244. postmanke September 12, 2009 2:37 pm

For all that was saying give coach Lee some time.. For all that doubt why we need someone else calling the plays.. For all that didnt agree…

    That’s why!

Now we can play some football! Great job on the players responding.. had a feeling they would.. it’s like the african american backup qb taking over the qb job from the white qb when a team is not playing well factor. Players rally. they actually move the betting line in vegas because of that.

  245. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:37 pm

I don’t understand how you don’t protect the ball when you know it’s a QB Draw.

  246. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:40 pm

Nice to see a more aggressive Run and Shoot. I like how Rolo established the pass, pass, pass, then bust a running play. For a moment, I thought June Jones was back at UH. Good job so far Rolo….and coach Shaw who I believe was said to be calling the running plays.

  247. Matt September 12, 2009 2:40 pm

I still think we need to keep the pressure on in the 2nd half. Do not get complacent. WSU is really only down 4 scores. A couple of mistakes and they are right back in the game. Protect the ball. Protect the ball. Protect the ball. Don’t back off Coach Mack.

  248. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:42 pm

If these announcers get any closer to each other, they’ll be kissing. The booth must be small. yeah, that’s what it is, a small booth.

  249. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 2:42 pm

    Boise St up 14-0 now…sheesh..

  250. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:43 pm

After reading the tidbit by Stephen Tsai about Shane Austin, is it too far-fetched to think we might see him play? After Moniz?

  251. Kekoa (iPhone) September 12, 2009 2:43 pm

Bhf2 ~ amswer your phone. Gemji calling!

  252. Ronnie September 12, 2009 2:44 pm

Congrats to JJ and SMU. How long has it been since they were 2-0?

  253. labrat September 12, 2009 2:46 pm

Just checking in. Keep the MO going and don’t let up.

  254. labrat September 12, 2009 2:47 pm

JJ plays Washington St next. JJ must really be smiling right now.

  255. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:51 pm

As long as Bo Levi Mitchell scores for just one team, SMU should be alright.

  256. Craig Alexander September 12, 2009 2:52 pm

Emmanuel Sanders put up some big numbers for SMU. BLMitchell also passed for 350 yards but is just 50something percent completion rate.

  257. J-Dog September 12, 2009 2:53 pm

I hope we get to see Bryant Moniz. I haven’t been to the practices or to the spring game. I’m curious to see how he performs.

  258. royvic September 12, 2009 2:54 pm

    On WSU messageboard

Do you think I can trade my football tickets for women’s soccer tickets?

Cougars are wearing out Hawaii’s placekicker

Bend over, Cougars, here come the Warriors

    Dear Lord…

Hello… Cougs… Did you guys show up?

it is funny. laugh i did.

  259. OldDiver September 12, 2009 2:55 pm

This isn’t about play calling, this is about execution and who you are playing.

  260. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 2:57 pm

    Royvic – that’s hilarious..

  261. Kazz (blkberry_storm) September 12, 2009 2:57 pm

c’mon coaches, work on our Warriors’ minds!

  267. Matt September 12, 2009 3:06 pm

WSU is not going to just roll over. We need to keep up the effort. Do not back off.

  268. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 3:07 pm

this isn’t about who we are playing.

This is about the Warriors playing their game.

And it starts in their minds!

and part of the problem is our 12th man is eating too much and not yelling enough. 👿

  269. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 3:08 pm

and the other part of the problem is that our coaches have not kept in our players’ heads.

    Go Warriors!!

  270. Matt September 12, 2009 3:09 pm

    Come on Defense.

  271. NYUH September 12, 2009 3:10 pm

    WAKE UP COACHES.

THINK OF THE TEAM. THE TEAM. STOP TRYING FO BE NICE GUYS. NICE GUYS FINISH LAST1!!!!!!!

  290. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:29 pm

I would say, “time to put the wildcat back in the cage,” but I guess there’s nothing like game reps.

On the other hand, if WSU scores again, I’d go back to the “base package” as the Kekaula put it.

  291. Matt September 12, 2009 3:30 pm

Defense. Defense. Defense. Come on DEFENSE!!!

  292. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 3:31 pm

Dear Warriors: TAUNTING? If Kekaula’s right on this…you guys are student-athletes. Students need to _learn_ from things.

Is this the same team that played in the 1st half….good grief. Wazzu scores again…

  325. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 3:47 pm

    19 unanswered points

okay coach, gotta step up. right now. rally the troops.

  326. Matt September 12, 2009 3:47 pm

We need a long sustained drive on offense resulting in a TD to put this one away. We let them back into the game with mistakes.

  327. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 3:48 pm

Ummm, ok den, who when mellow out our players?

Who when feed them during half-time because they NO SEEM HUNGRY anymore.

  328. madeinhawaii September 12, 2009 3:49 pm

    focus.. FOCUS!!

dayum… our Warrior Machine is sputtering … dang…

  329. Konaboy September 12, 2009 3:49 pm

One more long TD drive and UH puts this away… Let’s go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  330. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 3:49 pm

its back to the mind. we gotta keep our Warriors mind’s sharp. play the game.

  331. Old Diver September 12, 2009 3:50 pm

This is why I said before, it’s not play calling, it’s execution.

  332. Matt September 12, 2009 3:50 pm

Alright Salas. 62 yard catch and run.

  333. Konaboy September 12, 2009 3:50 pm

S-A-L-A-S!!!!!!!! Now let’s put this game away!!!!!!!

  334. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:50 pm

Super play by Salas. BUT…can the QBs FINISH? We’re up to 2 redzone fumbles right now.

  335. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 3:51 pm

There we go – great run Salas!

  336. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:51 pm

If not for the mistakes and maybe the penalty on Bryant(?), we’d be at 56 pts. right now.

  337. Maverick September 12, 2009 3:52 pm

Give the ball to Huen to Score!

  338. Matt September 12, 2009 3:53 pm

    Stopped. 4th down.

  339. Konaboy September 12, 2009 3:53 pm

I just wish we milked more time, but the FG makes a difference.

  340. Matt September 12, 2009 3:53 pm

    FG by Enos. 38-20 Warriors

  341. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:53 pm

    Good job, Enos!

  342. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 3:53 pm

3 pts is better than another turnover in the red zone…

  343. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 3:54 pm

good job offense. 3 points is 3 points.

  344. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:54 pm

I’m a little puzzled why they didn’t try a single run play at the goal line.

  345. Matt September 12, 2009 3:54 pm

The FG makes it a 3 score game.

  346. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:56 pm

An 18-pt. cushion is critical given the way this game is going.

  347. Matt September 12, 2009 3:56 pm

We still need a defensive stop and sustained offensive scoring drive to put it away.

  348. bighilofan2witabigheadache September 12, 2009 3:57 pm

c’mon Warriors. lets see some playahz.
remind me for ask the coach who was calling the D in the 3rd Q.

  349. Matt September 12, 2009 3:58 pm

    INT Mana Silva. Chee hoo.

  350. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 3:58 pm

Yah baby – Silva for the INT!

  351. BowsForever September 12, 2009 3:58 pm

Well, if there’s some bright spots, Mana Silva is playing great (nice INT!), and Spencer Smith is having a MONSTER game.

  352. 99club September 12, 2009 3:58 pm

    Interception! Way to go D!

  353. Maverick September 12, 2009 3:58 pm

Whew….Big play for the game. Interception

Take back the Big Mo’ Warriors!

  354. Matt September 12, 2009 3:59 pm

Spencer Smith is having a hell of a game. He deflected that last pass.

  355. bighilofan2witabigheadache September 12, 2009 3:59 pm

da Hilo man wen steal da buggaz lunch. 😀

  356. Maverick September 12, 2009 3:59 pm

    Howdy 99

Come on, punch it in. No mercy.

  357. Matt September 12, 2009 4:00 pm

Fricken penalties. So much for fewer penalties.

  358. BowsForever September 12, 2009 4:00 pm

Wow, _Estes_ of all people with a penalty. But if he had to do it to save the QB, good call.

But boy, does it sound like we’ve had more than 2 penalties this game. 😛

  359. bighilofan2witabigheadache September 12, 2009 4:00 pm

    Mana Silva did great

  360. Matt September 12, 2009 4:01 pm

Alright Pilares. Nice catch and run.

  361. mctruck September 12, 2009 4:01 pm

this wac game tracker just froze up from the 4thQ.

    is the score still 38-20???

  362. Matt September 12, 2009 4:02 pm

    Yes it is still 38-20.

  363. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 4:02 pm

    Salas is hauling……come on offense…

  364. Matt September 12, 2009 4:03 pm

Salas is still the man. Big catch down to the 17 of WSU.

  365. bighilofan2witabigheadache September 12, 2009 4:03 pm

Thats 3 funbles in da red zone.

  366. Matt September 12, 2009 4:03 pm

    Argh!!!! Green fumbles. WSU recovers.

  367. Konaboy September 12, 2009 4:03 pm

Brah, Mack & company need to remedy the butterfingers next week, this is ridiculous.

  368. BowsForever September 12, 2009 4:03 pm

Salas is lighting the place up. Best offensive move the coaches made this season.

    And…then this.

Make the whole damn team do laps after this game. Drive the point home that individual failures are on everybody.

  369. 99club September 12, 2009 4:04 pm

    Another fumble. WSU’s ball. Ouch.

  370. mctruck September 12, 2009 4:04 pm

    Tanks, Matt…appreciate the updates.

  371. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 4:04 pm

Oh, what a shocker…another turnover in the red zone. This game is a roller coaster…

  372. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 4:04 pm

the defense gotta step it up. we gotta use this as practice for UNLV now. put samoa guyz in rotation. watcha tink?

  373. TChahng [오키나와] September 12, 2009 4:04 pm

    NOOOOO!!!!

  374. Matt September 12, 2009 4:04 pm

Kekaula said Salas has 7 catches for 194 yards.

  375. madeinhawaii September 12, 2009 4:05 pm

These turnovers are making the game really look bad.. even with the win.

  376. madeinhawaii September 12, 2009 4:05 pm

Especially following all those turnovers last week, too.

  377. bighilofan2 September 12, 2009 4:06 pm

18 points, 6 minutes to go. the defense has the ball. paipai is a baller.

  378. Matt September 12, 2009 4:06 pm

    Fumble. warriors recover. Oh yeah!!!

  379. Konaboy September 12, 2009 4:06 pm

  380. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 4:06 pm

    got it back…..there is a god…

  381. BowsForever September 12, 2009 4:06 pm

I think the theme of tonight’s game is “flashes of brilliance.” Followed by “broken palm from slapping forehead too much.”

  390. mctruck September 12, 2009 4:07 pm

WSU must be making a concerted effort to punch/strip the ball out from whoever has the ball???

  391. losthawaiian September 12, 2009 4:08 pm

By the way, anybody here went to Outrigger last week? How’s the food and the parking fees?

  397. WarriorChick September 12, 2009 4:09 pm

  401. Matt September 12, 2009 4:11 pm

Great punt by Dunnachie. Downed at the 9.

  402. Ronnie September 12, 2009 4:11 pm

My Game Tracker is 6 minutes behind the game clock… yikes! Good thing we have the radio stream.

  403. BowsForever September 12, 2009 4:12 pm

Dunnachie put some serious backspin on that punt. McBriar the Second!

  404. Konaboy September 12, 2009 4:12 pm

    Rego in at RB.

  408. Konaboy September 12, 2009 4:15 pm

Bowsforever- true story, but if this is how rolo’s playcaling is going to be, then I’m gladd he was a disciple of JJ’s offense and glad of the adjustment they have made on playcalling because the results are sick. Now granted we are playing a defense that is thin on playmakers but the stats are huge today.

4 turnovers and still over 600 yds. of offense on the road. And we still have alot of room to improve. Guy’s we have tons of potential.

  420. BowsForever September 12, 2009 4:22 pm

Great job calling the plays, Rolo. 2-0, we’re already ahead of where we were last year. If we can pull out a win at UNLV and demoralize La Tech early, 4-0 isn’t out of the question. The good news is we have the tools for a very good season.

  421. mctruck September 12, 2009 4:22 pm

Well, goodnite all, that was a very fun game; congrats to all our WARRIORS!!

    Way to go, Warriors!

  429. Ronnie September 12, 2009 4:31 pm

Not that I like the University of Spoiled Children, but I feel for their freshman QB. Is Ohio St. that good? Or SC not playing to their potential?

  433. Matt September 12, 2009 4:37 pm

A pretty good game for the Warriors. If we figure out some way to consistently put together the first half of this game with the second half of last game and eliminate the turnovers and we will have a very, very good team. Still way, way too many turnovers in this game. We had 4 fumbles. I think at least a couple were inside the 10 yard line on the way to another TD. Salas is still the man: 7 catches, 194 yards. Bradley had a great game on offense. 7 catches, 150 yards and 2 TDs. On defense, Spencer Smith and Paipai Falemalu had outstanding games. Mana Silva also had two INTs. Good game, good improvement from last week, but still have work to do for next week. Our next opponent, UNLV, starts their game against Oregon State in about 15 minutes.

Eliminate the turnovers and Hawaii has one heck of an offense. Running and passing.. I like it.

  436. madeinhawaii September 12, 2009 4:42 pm

So where are all those guys who were criticizing the Coaching decision to let Rolo call the plays and have Ron work closely with the WRs ?

Our guys were getting open today/night… awesome.

  442. XxFaithxX September 12, 2009 5:16 pm

Good game for the boys and g rats on the win.

    Lots to improve on.

    Holding on to the ball……

3 fumbles in teh red zone?

ONLY 3 points in the 2nd half?

That last one has to change….It could have been many factors for the lack of points, but against better teams (which will probably will include the majority of teams that we have still have not played) we might have lost the game.

Mack, DO NOT SLACK ON THE GAS!!

Rolo, keep with that play calling as it worked for a 1/2 a game, just focus on making it for a full 4 qtrs.

Boys, please do not drop the ball, literally.

Anyway, a Win is a Win. WOOT!

  443. Matt September 12, 2009 5:26 pm

Check out this line from the game wrap up on ESPN.com

Even Hawaii’s linemen were faster than Washington State’s defensive backs. When Chima Nwachukwu picked up a fumble by Alexander at the Cougars 1 midway through the second quarter — 1 yard from Hawaii going up 42-0 — he briefly appeared free for a 99-yard score down the sideline. Then Warriors right tackle Laupepa Letuli ran him down and pushed him out of bounds at the WSU 31.

  444. Kazz (10 more for Coach Shoji) September 12, 2009 5:34 pm

    SMOKE AND MIRRORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Matt Barkley getting the glory for the last drive for USC to come back and win the game?!?!?!?!?!??!?! CHILD PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! Joe McKnight won the game! I see the ESPN college football media machine has their wheels turning towards the story of a “freshman QB ‘in charge’ of USC’s offense. I’ll say it again, “B**CH PUHLEAZZZZZEEEE!!!!”

-“Offensive assault”?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Troy went to Florida and again the talking heads have Tim Tebow’s “coinpurse” stuck down the middle of their throats as if it was some epic battle…. Christ!

I tell ya, SMOKE AND MIRRORS!!!!!!

  445. Ronnie September 12, 2009 5:42 pm

I like the AP write-up on the ESPN site.

“The Cougars were left humbled by Hawaii…”

“Even Hawaii’s linemen were faster than Washington State’s defensive backs. When Chima Nwachukwu picked up a fumble by Alexander at the Cougars 1 midway through the second quarter — 1 yard from Hawaii going up 42-0 — he briefly appeared free for a 99-yard score down the sideline. Then Warriors right tackle Laupepa Letuli ran him down and pushed him out of bounds at the WSU 31.”

  446. Kazz (10 more for Coach Shoji) September 12, 2009 5:42 pm

Offense: B-, would be an A+ sans turnovers in the redzone.

Defense: C-, would be a C+ if it wasn’t for the inability to adjust to the running attack by WSU in the second half. Would be a “D” if it wasn’t for the turnovers caused by the secondary in the entire game.

Special Teams: B. Dunnachie’s punt plus the good coverage led to that first ST turnover on the fumbled return attempt.

Discipline: B. Several personal calls were PURE B.S.

Good to see the smiles on the faces of LWJ, Alex Green, and AWESOME to see the “swagger” in the steps of the offense as a whole. They needed this boost today.

Need to fix the turnovers and Coach Mack needs to pick apart the tapes to figure out why, for the second game in a row, are we having issues with the running attack.

    Warriors of the game:

-Jeremy Bryant on a CLEAN hit to make that Cougar go to sleep for a bit.

-Spencer Smith. Awesome game with good tackles.

-Mana Silva. Two picks on the day I think.

-Paipai Falemalu. Caused the fumble and recovered it.

-Greg Alexander. Shows what he can do with his eyes and arm as opposed to his feet.

    -Greg Salas. You da man!

    -Alex Green. (see above)

-Rodney Bradley. Thank God for his leaping ability and break out speed.

-O line. Good game. While the pass rush wasn’t too heavy for the first half, they did their job, especially on a few running plays in the first half to bust LWJ and Alex Green out.

-Scott Enos. Consistent today with his PATs and the FGs. Not to mention a few times his kickoffs landed in the endzone.

  447. Ronnie September 12, 2009 5:44 pm

Sorry Matt. I didn’t see your post before I repeated it…

  448. kama krab September 12, 2009 5:56 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

It was a really great gamed played by Hawaii. You take away the fumbles and it would have been the best game all around that Hawaii has played in a long time but you know what, with all the fumbles and some of the defensive mistakes we made, we still won by 18. I take that any day. Just gotta work on the drop balls and we should be good for the rest of he year.

Well, we just got back to our friend’s house and have the kids half to bed. Fun game! We saw Mr and Mrs A-House on our way out of the stadium. Last time I saw them was 25 years ago! Hard to imagine it has been a quarter century. Taking the 1 year old and 4 year old was exhausting. They survived though and had fun cheering with the crowd.

  455. kama krab September 12, 2009 6:10 pm

In regard to the run game defense. I think that will get better as the year goes on. I say this because alot of the run defense has to do with leverage and the ability of the defense line to be able to stand the offensive line up. What needs to happen is our line will have to learn how to get the best leverage on the offensive linemen. Once they are able to do this then our line will be able to penetrate the offensive line and make some plays. It will come with reps. We have to remeber that we are very young on the defensive line. Once again it will come. You could see glimpses of penetration throughout the game and once the penetration becomes consistant we will see some big stops. JMO.

I LOVED the way we could hear the Warrior faithful yelling DE-FENSE on the broadcast!!!

MAHALO Na Koa for sponsoring the Cheer Squad for this game!

Next favorite thing was how Greg Alexander took down the guy who scooped up his fumble. I would be SCARED to have a pissed off at himself Greg Alexander coming after me.

Congrats Coaches and players… you know what you will work on for the next game.

Man- I dunno about everyone else but that BELIEVE feeling was in the air today!

Myron Newberry was fbing his delight- esp. at Greg Salas 😎

PRAYERS FOR COLT who is with the doctor and getting looked at for surgery.

Get Well Soon to Kymry who is trying to get over the flu before UNLV. I had a great gang to cheer with at Rob’s today- including her hubby Gary.

Not sure if I saw right but looked like Kealoha hurt his arm, also Alexander looked like he got his arm (non throwing) banged up too.

  465. postmanke September 12, 2009 6:52 pm

Now! We are playing some football. Not perfect, but nice to see the offense back.. Finally! Great for Mack for finally making the switch ( or was it a lil bit of JD) =)

For all that was begging for this change for over a year, thats what we were talking about!!

I know it’s only 2nd game, but it seems like the players attitudes have a little bit of swagger and very upbeat. The season outlook is much brighter than it was a 7 days ago.

The D has their hands full next week. Omar Clayton UNLV QB and WR Payne will pick them apart. Rolo you can do it!! Lee can coach his receivers, stay in the booth and marvel at his offense from up top without saying a word! …and we should be bowling!

  479. royvic September 12, 2009 7:36 pm

UH player I thought making the most improvement from the first game was Kia. For me it was like watching a different player.(and watching a different O line from the first game) In fact both of the offensive tackles, I was watching, seemed to be pivoting their bodies and shoulders more (at 90 degree angles?) when pass blocking–which formed a nice pocket for Alexander. What it looked like to me, also, was that the Offensive tackles would momentarily neutralize the defenders momentum and then block them to the outside away from Alexander . Before it seemed like the Offensive tackles would back peddle too fast (esp. Kia) allowing the defenders a full head of steam in their pass rushes. Overall I was watching Kia showing a lot of hustle, especially on the running plays, too.

In this game UH O line gave up one sack for 1 yard. And Alexander wasn’t as hurried by the opposition’s defense. And the Warriors look like a different team on offense when the O line blocks well.

    Game ball to Kia, imo.

alright, okay they can make a big pac-10 team look silly, but can they do it to unlv, a mountain west step child…(san diego st and unlv were only included with the “mountain” teams of the mwc so they have enough teams to qualify for an automatic bid in baseball) basically byu was so distraught about getting ridiculed by uh in football, was tired of losing to uh in baseball, and couldn’t stand getting dominated by the wahine their only recourse was to go home and cry then make their own bogus conference. it’s the if i can’t win, then you can’t play with my ball syndrome.

UNLV is a good team. They are leading Oregon State 21-20 with less than 1 minute left in the game. Oregon State was picked to finish around 4th in the Pac-10 unlike WSU who was pretty much unanimously picked to be the doormat of the Pac-10. We have some work to do this week to come away with the win in Vegas. The good thing for our guys is that there will probably be almost as many Warrior fans there as Rebels fans.

UH’s website doesn’t have the quotes from the game up yet, but Washington State’s website has sections for quotes from UH and from WSU.

    Quote from Mac:

“I really think we won on all three sides of the ball. It’s tough to win on the road, especially against a Pac-10 school.”

“Obviously we’re moving in the right direction. We got better this week than we were last week, and that showed on offense and defense.”

  508. Garret September 12, 2009 8:20 pm

Greg Alexander likes how they scripted the first 10 plays–this was a good change that Rolo made and contributed to the fast start to the game. Without the fast start by the offense the game could have been completely different, so Rolo should get more credit for this. UH used to do this under JJ but stopped doing it after he left…Rolo said that he felt it helped him as a QB when the first set of plays were scripted and it sure seemed to help Alexander.

On scripting the first 10 plays…

“It’s real nice to have a mindset coming in and get your mind right. It helps to be able to visualize what’s coming and know what to expect.”

    Good job Wahine!

No let up after the break.

    Garret,

Good to read that the defense is getting some confidence towards stopping the run.
    Thanks for the link.

Sometimes the confidence alone is just the right touch to any adjustments they’ll need to stop the run. Today, as soon as Wazzu unleashed the running game at the start of the 1st half, they didn’t let up. Good for the large cushion we had, otherwise if the game was “up and up” it would have been a battle.

I’m sure a lot of WSU’s running plays against us had LaTech and FSU drooling.

Our defense is young, but humble and HUNGRY.

Besides Coach Mack is our HC and he’s got a slew of good defensive people to make the necessary corrections (i.e. Dave Aranda and Cal Lee)…

With continued success by GA, I’d anticipate the same-old “system QB” label to start getting slung around.

Alexander, starting his second season as the replacement for school record-holding quarterback and former Heisman Trophy candidate Colt Brennan, had 263 yards passing by halftime.

    I say, “Bring it!”

Just got home from the game and yeah, the game was so onreal!
We were sooooo exhausted from cheering after we were up 35-0, das why the noise went down in the 2nd half.
On some key downs I couldn’t figure out why the Coug QB was looking confused and apparently changing the play, until I realized that our sea of green in the corner of the end zone really must have been that loud!
Take away those bonehead fumbles and PF penalties, and woulda been total domination, garans!

Just checked the box score, and the penalties stat for Hawaii was abysmal. 12 penalties for 120 yards…sheesh.

About our running game…with Green and LWJ probably 1-2 at RB, I wonder if Funaki will get significant playing time this year if the Wildcat doesn’t work out.

Early version of the quotes from the game is up on my blog. I don’t have the quotes from the Advertiser and some other newspapers yet, but most of the quotes from after the game are probably included here. I’ll do the final version tomorrow.

    Some tidbits:

Praising the blocking by the Warriors, co-defensive coordinator Chris Ball said:

“We threw a lot of different looks at them and they did a good job of protecting the passer.” (SR)

About how the Warrior offense effectively moved the ball, safety Xavier Hicks said:

“They are taught to find the hole in the zone and, if they see us in man coverage, run man patterns. They have a veteran quarterback, so he knew where to throw the ball.” (SR)

Originally, the UNLV game was scheduled to start at 3:30 pm but the time was moved back to 5 pm. The Wahine Pepperdine match was to start at 7 pm so there’d be no conflict with the original time.

Now with a 5 pm start for football, that’s not the case. We’re planning to go to a nearby bar and stay through the half before heading on up to watch the volleyball match. Will check out how the tv coverage will be handled at the beginning of the week.

NOTE: Assuming that the Wahine do not lose another match, the 1,000th win will be on Wednesday, October 14, here against LaTech. .

If they lose one game, then the 1,000th win will be Saturday, October 17, against New Mexico State. The football team plays at Nevada starting at 1:05 pm. No conflict.

Two losses and the 1000th win will be against BYUH – the Girls From La`ie – and that will happen on Friday, October 23.

No matter what, we’ll celebrate at the Boise State game on October 24 – more to come on that.

    Great day for UH sports

All of our road Tsaikos must have gone straight to the casino after the game, no comments from any of them.

  569. Long Time UH Fan September 12, 2009 11:49 pm

Many mahalos to Steve M for setting up today’s TV-Gate at Genji’s. Great food and great fun with the Tsaikos! Finally got to meet Pomai, Sailor Blue and his boss, and Las Vegas. Good to see nephew, Pride., BG and his boss, Kekoa, Pops, HiFlyer, Slugger, Ralph, JaM and Brie, Annodah Dave, Peaches, CennCee, Loa, Midnight and his boss again as it’s been quite awhile. Many thanks to our cheerleaders, BG and WassupDoc! Was starting to lose my voice yelling IMUA Warrior/Hawaii first down/Touchdown,etc.

  570. Slugger September 12, 2009 11:59 pm

SteveM put me in charge of keeping track of next week’s gameday get-together at Genji’s. Let me know if you’d like to watch the game at Genji’s.

I have to stop watching today’s replay. Gotta go to bed.

Night all! I know we’ll all have sweet Warrior dreams.

This is why I said before, it’s not play calling, it’s execution.

really, the execution fell off in the second half because the players’ minds weren’t as focused as in the first half.

    except the defense.

    how about da K A T O O O S H king Jeramy Bryant?

Paidpai had a great one too. and Wadsworth had a god one in the first quarter.
