Game day

Instead of watching a movie, the Warriors attended the Rainbow Wahine volleyball match last night. It was a nice way of supporting another program. After the match, the Warriors were hurried back to a hotel in Waikiki for meeting in preparation for tonight’s game against Louisiana Tech.

* * *

Whether you believe in building a rail system or not, that’s your choice. But it sure was an odd sight to see rail opponents protesting outside of Aloha Stadium while traffic was at a crawl. Just an observation.

    Good afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

ST, are you putting us on a writing diet? Lol.

Game day, folks. Nothing beats the excitement of victory anticipation.

The Warriors have turned the corner and it will be full spead ahead from here on out.

With the economy the way it is, all around the country, we need something very positive, like a decisive Warrior win, to distract us from our misery.

is it going to rain tonight?

  18. al October 11, 2008 11:40 am

it is good that they support the wahine. i have seen the girls en masse at all of the home football games.

it is little things like these that will only help promote the “college atmosphere” that is so often elusive to our “commuter campus” university. you gotta believe that coach mack is behind this kind of thinking and that is one small factor that adds to the sum.

we certainly have selected the right coach didn’t we?

  19. HiFlyer October 11, 2008 11:42 am

bb – there’s always a chance for rain.

    weather forecast says 30% chance.

  20. Maverick October 11, 2008 11:43 am

Awesome Possum on our Warrior support foundation. Spread the aloha and wealth of good mana amongst all.

If I was the coach, I would be putting the team in one of the meeting rooms with the Boise game on the Big screen this afternoon and let them streeeeetch during the game viewing.

  30. Garret October 11, 2008 12:45 pm

It is GREAT that the football team could support the wahine volleyball team last night! They were there for the ceremony and I’m sure that they had a great time supporting the volleyball team. I agree with an earlier post about how that type of turnout helps build the atmosphere for games…and promoting support between teams is a great thing. So, good job by Mack for choosing that over taking the team to a movie!

  31. Garret October 11, 2008 12:53 pm

For those complaining about the refs in the Texas-Oklahoma game, the refs were equally bad for both teams (unlike what happened in Fresno last week).

Oklahoma’s first TD was actually a mistake that wasn’t reviewed–the player was stopped well short of the goal line and it would have been 4th down. Surprisingly, the play was NOT reviewed. That could have been a 4 or 7 point difference in the game.

Also, the Oklahoma punter did a good job in acting (even better than the Fresno kicker last week!) on one of the penalties, as the Texas player stopped before hitting the Oklahoma punter and the punter jumped into him and then fell to the ground like he was seriously injured.

Of course the two roughing calls on hitting Colt out of bounds were bogus to me, I felt sorry for the Oklahoma player who was really not trying to hit the QB on either play. And Oklahoma *did* intercept that pass in the end zone…I don’t know how the refs blew that call. That was a 3 point difference in the game, but at least the final margin was 10 since Texas’ OL and DL took over the game in the 4th quarter.

I hope that the refs at UH’s game today do a better job! And I hope that the run D shuts down La Tech because I’m sure they will try to run the ball to control the game on offense.

  32. Garret October 11, 2008 12:55 pm

Off to take the girls trick-or-treating at Seaworld. We’ll be with friends and have 4 girls together all between the ages of 3.5 and 5 years old…should be fun! I’d rather be at the Tsaiko-gate, but this will be a lot of (free) fun for my girls.

  33. madeinhawaii October 11, 2008 1:01 pm

Nice to see the team support another team.. the Wahine Volleyball. Watching a home team win can only serve as a boost. Even a messy win is a win.

Kick some La Tech okole Warriors!

Come on Warriors, win the next two and we’re in the drivers seat.

  41. wafan October 11, 2008 2:00 pm

OSU’s J. Rogers is really racking up some yards against the Cougs. Dang. He hides behind his blockers then hits the gas when he gets into the open.

YES!!! Cougs pick off a screen and get the 18 yd TD return!

    OSU 21, WSU 13

    1. Oklahoma LOST
    2. Missouri Winning but only 10-7 halftime.
    3. LSU LOSING 20-0 halftime.
    4. Alabama IDLE…and the coaches don’t like Saban. (compare #1 votes in AP poll vs. Coaches Poll).
    5. Texas WON over #1 at a ‘neutral’ site.

  75. 99club October 11, 2008 4:44 pm

Right after the last post: OK St. scores. 21-17 OK St.

  76. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 4:46 pm

i still think its bogus for the heisman. colt should’ve won it in ’06. where was the love for him and his passing game that year? all of a sudden all these qb’s this year are throwing for crazy yards and TDs and they get all sorts of media hype. yet when colt did it the last few years, it was a “system” offense and it was a fluke. dang anti-hawaii bias.

28-17 Oklahoma St. with 6 min. left. Looks like #1 and #3 are losing today. This is a strong argument for having the first polls of the season only after the first Saturday in October. How far can undefeated #17 Oklahoma St. move up after beating the #3 team in the country?

  80. LizKauai (iPhone) October 11, 2008 5:21 pm

  82. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 5:46 pm

3 and out LA Tech. Then 3 and out UH. Then 3 and out LA Tech. Then 3 and out UH. Funaki is not moving the pocket as much as he was last week. Inoke did have a nice long run, but it was called back on a holding penalty. Coach Mack has about 4 or 5 leis on tonight. Looks more like a Hawaii Coach should. C’mon offense, let’s get it together.

  98. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:35 pm

Oh my gosh! a penalty against la-la tech!

  99. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 6:38 pm

here goes the crappy wac refs again

  100. curveball October 11, 2008 6:38 pm

The ball has to be catch able..bs call

  101. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:38 pm

I guess that was the token penalty for la-la. 2 plays later a bogus interference call against HI.

  102. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 6:40 pm

FG missed by LA Tech after a BS pass interference call on Calvin Roberts.

  103. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:40 pm

Yee Haw! la-la fg is NO GOOD!!

  104. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:43 pm

What a BEAUTIFUL pass!!! 53 yd. inside the 10.

  105. curveball October 11, 2008 6:43 pm

    Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

  106. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 6:43 pm

Nice long pass by Inoke to Lane. 1st and 10 UH at the 11.

  107. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 6:44 pm

    nice pass

  108. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 6:44 pm

TD UH on a run by Funaki.

  109. curveball October 11, 2008 6:44 pm

    Hi Liz…. I know you are peeking..hahhahhaha

  110. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 6:45 pm

    TD!

  111. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 6:45 pm

    XP is good 7-0 UH.

  112. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:45 pm

    Funaki running it in!

    That was NICE!

  113. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 6:46 pm

we don’t need no stinkin refs to keep our drives going!

  114. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:46 pm

I hope Oceanic (online) shows the halftime show – isn’t Willie K. singing during half-time?

  115. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 6:51 pm

LA Tech is moving the ball down the field. The defense needs to step up for another big stop.

  116. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:53 pm

Some of those plays looked almost like slow motion, but maybe it is because la-la looks so frantic…

  117. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:55 pm

Chop Block called on la-la tech. 15 yd.

Then an PI on Hawai’i on the very next play. moves them back close to the goal line.

  118. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 6:57 pm

    Fumble LA Tech. Hawaii ball.

  119. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 6:58 pm

    AWWW YEAH!!!!!!

  120. Ronnie October 11, 2008 6:59 pm

Hawai’i punched it out of his extended hand. I guess that’s why you shouldn’t stick your hand out with the ball….

  121. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:00 pm

That’s another turnover for UH. Coolio!

  122. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:01 pm

Liz has updated her blog with some more pictures. There’s one of the Rainbow Dancers walking off the field.

  123. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:02 pm

    Oops. Here’s the link: http://lizkauai.blogspot.com/

  124. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:03 pm

    It’s another Warrior….. FIRST DOWN!

  125. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:05 pm

Bummer! UH has to punt again.

  126. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:06 pm

Hmmm… delay of game against Hawai’i.

It seems as if they were trying for a long snap count to draw a foul, but instead ran out of time.

  127. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:10 pm

    LA Tech FG attempt blocked!

  128. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:11 pm

    Brashton is the man!

He picked up the BLOCKED fg attempt and ran it back to the 40 yd line!

    OUTSTANDING SPECIAL TEAMS!!!

  129. TChahng [νƒœν•œλ―Όκ΅] October 11, 2008 7:13 pm

    He does it all!

Causes a fumble, blocks a field goal try, picks up the blocked kick, throws for a touchdown, catches the ball for a touchdown!

    BRASHTON SATELE!

  130. 22London October 11, 2008 7:13 pm

Anyone know if LWJ is hurt?

  131. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:14 pm

    False start against Hawai’i.

    2nd & 16 now.

  132. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:17 pm

    TChahng – you said it!

  133. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:17 pm

I don’t think LWJ is hurt. I read that he was practicing this week. Plus they have been using Pilares as a slot this week. I think they did that because LWJ and Libre were fully healed from their injuries and Farmer is available as well.

  134. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:17 pm

    22London –

I’m not sure, but we noticed last week that he didn’t really have explosive power on some of his runs. I can’t remember if it was an arch or Achilles heel injury from the beginning of the season.

  135. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:18 pm

I mean… what not far away anymore said. πŸ˜€

  136. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:20 pm

that la-la tech QB sure is good at throwing the ball away to save the sack. He’s done it like 3 or 4 times already.

  137. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 7:23 pm

dang. tackle him! don’t try to hit him! he doesn’t go down on hits.

  138. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:24 pm

    Ronnie,
Yeah he’s pretty good at intentional grounding. He’s done it a couple of times already. Ha ha.

  139. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:27 pm

TD LA Tech. They moved it down the field pretty well over the ground the entire drive. 7-7.

  140. 22London October 11, 2008 7:28 pm

Thanks Ronnie and not far away anymore for the LWJ update….

  141. curveball October 11, 2008 7:31 pm

    Penalties ahhhh

  142. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:34 pm

    22London,
LWJ came in for a play and had a short run, but then he came right back out.

  143. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:36 pm

LWJ just came back in and had a block during a long first down run by Funaki.

  144. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:38 pm

Dang. Coach Mack is PISSED about the penalty calling by the refs/

  145. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:39 pm

TD UH on a long pass to Greg Salas. Oh yeah.

  146. curveball October 11, 2008 7:40 pm

    yeah

  147. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:42 pm

    XP is good. 14-7 UH.

  148. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 7:42 pm

    we needed that!

  149. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:43 pm

Fumble on the kickoff. UH recovers. Alright special teams.

  150. 22London October 11, 2008 7:43 pm

For some reason I thought LWJ was a senior. I happy to hear that he’s a junior…at least that’s what I thought I saw in his bio…

  151. curveball October 11, 2008 7:44 pm

    here we go…..

  152. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:44 pm

    There’s LWJ!

    1st down!

  153. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:45 pm

I think Ron Lee read 22London’s post. LWJ is getting into the game more often.

  154. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:46 pm

TD UH! on a Pilares run.

  155. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:47 pm

    TD Pilares!!!!

  156. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:47 pm

    XP good. 21-7 UH.

  157. duffer October 11, 2008 7:47 pm

Pilares is AWESOME as a RB!

  158. curveball October 11, 2008 7:47 pm

    yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah

  159. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:48 pm

Oh oh. Malcolm Lane has an injured left hand. Return is questionable.

  160. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:49 pm

I say put Mouton in as a WR.

  161. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 7:53 pm

2 minute offense practice in a game environment!

  162. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:53 pm

Come on Offense. March it down the field and score once more before the half.

  163. Ronnie October 11, 2008 7:55 pm

Oh oh. LWJ is limping again. It must be a nagging injury.

  164. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 7:56 pm

why did la tech bring their own police?
    don’t trust HPD?
    geez.

  165. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 7:59 pm

Kind of funny that LA Tech brought their own police officer to guard Dooley. I guess when you are both the coach and the AD you can approve those types of expenditures. That police officer probably doesn’t even have any law enforcement authority here in Hawaii anyway.

  166. Pauoa Boy October 11, 2008 8:00 pm

WOOTAH BABY, DAS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, WHAT AN AWESOME FIRST HALF OF PLAY…

PILARES IS THE MAN!!! FUNAKI IS MIKE VICK IN DISGUISE!!!

  169. jm2375 October 11, 2008 8:03 pm

    Evening Tsai-kos!

Good game so far. Stopped by the t-gate today for a couple of hours. Was great to meet everyone. Great bunch of people, but you all knew that already. Homey is as much a troublemaker in person as he is on the blog. πŸ˜†

    Go Warriors!!!

  170. NYUH October 11, 2008 8:03 pm

I agree with the announcers on KFVE about wasting a possession because you only have a minute 30. Good practice for 2 minute drill! Adding another score would put this game out of reach. Take away a turnover and this game could easily be tied.

  171. not far away anymore October 11, 2008 8:03 pm

Maybe the officer is there to protect Dooley against his own players. Or he could have been intimidated by the Ha’a and Vili. What a joke.

  172. Ronnie October 11, 2008 8:04 pm

hey! what happened to the Oceanic feed! πŸ™ I wanted to hear the band.

    Ok, it’s back!

  174. NEO October 11, 2008 8:05 pm

    Howzit gangee…

Posting from home, watching the game on PPV… was it just me or are there some BS PI calls? I really think that these refs are trying to steal the game from UH… Credit to UH for playing hard, but we DO need to minimize our penalties… Defense is playing very well, but I think they need to stop shoulder tackling, and start wrapping up. Saw a lot of big gains that could have been prevented… Just a casual observation. Overall a wonderful first half of play and I’m looking forward to an even more exciting and rewarding 2nd half. WARRIORS!!!!

    whooshing back to the fuud!

  213. Ronnie October 11, 2008 8:37 pm

Why do they allow double jersey numbers? Are there more than 100 (00 – 99) players on the team? I guess so. nevermind…

    PB,
You’re right about that LA Tech QB. There is no way he could have been as bad at GA Tech as he is playing today. BCS starting QB to benched by LA Tech. As Ronnie mentioned, good thing he has a degree already because he is going to need it.

So, it seems they are back to the shotgun every down. Wouldn’t the option work as well under center? Or is it because Funaki can’t see over the linemen as well from under center? Just wondering…

  262. Ronnie October 11, 2008 9:13 pm

Bummer! Picked in the end zone!

no matter where they from. they’re a ref, and they’re ref’ng a WAC game, thus they’re wac refs.
they’re only good at one thing. SUCKING CONSISTANTLY.

  317. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 9:39 pm

they should put that last play in their playbook

  318. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 9:40 pm

that was their best offensive play of the game, besides the help from the refs.

  319. Ronnie October 11, 2008 9:40 pm

  334. expat October 11, 2008 9:49 pm

Just finished watching the game on the oceanic web stream. First time this year. The quality was excellent. Great overall team effort. I still want to see them put in something for LWJ because there has been nothing doing in the middle.

Who in Louisiana thought it was a good idea to bring a state trooper in full uniform all the way out to Hawaii for the game? That’s just nuts and a big waste of money. Oh, wait. Must have been Dooley.

  346. FloridaTed October 11, 2008 10:03 pm

I’m extremely happy with this win, but we should have won by thirty. I don’t know what’s wrong with the offense in the second halfs. Is it the conservative play calling, out of sync or what the heck is it?

    What’s everybodies opinion on this?

We definately have to improve on that in Boise !!

O.k. on we go to conquer the blue turf.

  347. jm2375 October 11, 2008 10:08 pm

    FT – Howzit!

I’m excited about next week. Both teams have to travel this week and so have a short week. Haven’t seen da ponies play yet, but UH has to have their A-game going in all aspects.

PLEASE LET THIS BE THE YEAR WE BEAT THEM ON THE SMURF TURF!!!!!

  348. FloridaTed October 11, 2008 10:08 pm

Well, then, good night, gang. 4 am here. Good win, that’s the main thing.

  349. Pauoa Boy October 11, 2008 10:09 pm

    FloridaTed,

I’m thinking it’s conservative play-calling and with this game probably clock control, since La-Tech’s running game started coming on a little bit…

I dunno though…I think we so used to going balls to the wall lights out when JJ was here…I think Coach Mack has a different approach… like the end of the first half…garrans JJ would have tried to score, but either way…I trust Coach Mack… He’s getting things turned around and the offense is getting better each week…special teams looked good except for Washington trying to be Chad Owens a few times…

  350. FloridaTed October 11, 2008 10:13 pm

    Hi, jm2375,

Yep, huge game next week. The offense needs to get over their second half blues, if we want to pull this off. The coaches have to open the play book a lot more. Whatever happened to the 10 to 15 yard passes? They seem to have vanished.

Well, good night, see ya tomorrow.

  351. FloridaTed October 11, 2008 10:19 pm

    Hi, Pauoa Boy.

I hope you’re right. Two thirds of the team is in full swing and the offense is coming around, but the second half play is leaving me frustrated.

Well, I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. Manana.

  352. chawan_cut October 11, 2008 10:25 pm

never thought i’d ever watch a UH game next to a (not so) roaring fireplace.

  353. jm2375 October 11, 2008 10:46 pm

OK, everyone must still be 1) on their way home, 2) still at the t-gate or 3) celebrating somewhere else.

Well, I promised Liz I’d be good tonight, but I had my fingers crossed. hehehe.

BTW bhf2 wants to do his own groundbreaking tomorrow at Cooke/Ching field. hehehehe.

  355. jm2375 October 11, 2008 11:25 pm

pssst Esme, wanna play? Nobody else stay?

  356. BowsForever October 11, 2008 11:32 pm

A win is a win, but somehow it felt very hollow to me.

All phases of the game had flashes of brilliance, but there were some troubling signs from offense, defense and special teams. Some of the penalties might’ve been mea culpas by the refs, but others showed a real lack of discipline by the players. More holding penalties…delay of game when punting…a very questionable intentional pass interference which gave LaTech 4 fresh chances to score at our 1-yard line…very frustrating.

Defense had a field day with turnovers but was way too up and down for me, and gave up some huge plays at times when it seemed much stronger at those same types of plays back at Fresno (such as perimeter run defense). Special teams was generally very solid, but one breakdown in return coverage was saved by a bizarre fumble or something (I’ll need to watch the replay at 10AM tomorrow), Grasso’s punt protection totally collapsed once, and the penalties seemed totally needless. Meanwhile, on offense, it seemed like they _completely_ turned off the “North Shore Offense” that worked so well at Fresno State.

What’s with that? I can sorta see the case for keeping the cards close to the vest for Boise State, but hey, the secret’s been out since Fresno State. Why not give Inoke more game reps and confidence in the modified system where he performs so much better? He made some bad and very dangerous throws at times, it seemed…one or two could’ve easily been picks.

This play confused me too — Inoke dropped back to pass and waited what seemed like 10 seconds for an open receiver…on a 3rd and inches! Huh? Heck, LaTech just put the QB under center and got the first down in a similar situation.

I could easily be wrong, but I dunno, to me, there’s a lot of things that need to be reevaluated and fixed, otherwise it’s gonna be a long day on the Smurf Turf next week.

According to UH Athletics website. The count for tonight’s game was 40,246.

So final numbers for the contests

    UH Passing:224 yards
    UH Rushing: 177 yards
    Attendance: 40,246
    Combined Points: 38

I didn’t win any of the contests.

    contest results…………

since tom mui and i both correctly guessed the exact amount of passing yards for tonight’s game, i would to remove my entry allowing tom mui to win the visor.

after all, he is my mentor, elder, and someone i have great respect for. besides, he was most instrumental in setting up that charitable remainder trust that was recognized tonight at half time.

So that trooper was LaTech’s? Thats funny if it is. My wife asked me at the game, “They brought their own police?” I turned to her and said, “Hell No! If they did, whats he gonna do, get beat up?” I thought he was stadium security. Oh well, we had a great time at the game.

    Go Warriors!!!

We made it to the game. Did not make it to T-gate. πŸ™ I’m doing so-so; thanks for asking. I was huffing and puffing when I walked up the spiral OK; sat in Red Section BB–UH Alumni Association tickets. Nice people in that section–they cheer a lot and no beer spillers!

How did the boss/your family enjoy the T-gate and game?

Actually I was testing to see if I’ve made any improvement in my breathing condition so I took the walk up the spiral.

Was looking for the A-House family in Yellow Section, South End Zone, but didn’t see them.

  366. al October 12, 2008 12:16 am

    a win is a win.

we have been spoiled by the past three years with our then score at will offense. we had some mean tools back then, that we now have come to appreciate.

but, i feel that ron lee has done an admirable job with the tools that he has right now. stylizing this offense will take some time. but, we did do some 360 yards tonight. there were signs of movement and there were times of sputtering.

i don’t blame inoke for his better than average passing stats. no not at all. the olind gave him enough time too. we just didn’t have that many open receivers during the night. perhaps we are not getting it, you know the choice passing routes. perhaps we need to have distinct passing routes. we are not seeing the wide open receivers like we did in the past.

is malcolm lane injured? i swear he would achieve greater separation last year in spot roles than this year.

    …nuff said.

ltuh…..we all had a great time. the food, fun, football, family, and friends are an unbeatable combination.

the concert was awesome. nalani and daughter of course were the headliners. liz and uke-boy was magnificent. homey surprised my with his songs. good ole addahknowjoe was just the rock back there with bass and backups going on.

great game. had me squeezing towards the end since winning by a certain number of points was imperative to me.

  369. cocobean October 12, 2008 12:25 am

Ron Lee is old school. His priorities midway through the 3rd was to run the clock and not turn the balll over. He wanted to get LaTech away from their strenght(running) and use their weakness(passing) to get back in the game. He seemed more concerned about maintaining the 17 pt lead and running the clock than increasing the lead. Ron’s play calling in the 2nd half was based on score and time. He was “managing the game” and not taking any chances unless he had to.

  372. al October 12, 2008 12:39 am

for me…..we needed to get into the endzone at least one more time in the second half. it is just that we got a couple of turnovers and we didn’t make em pay for it.

i have always been a proponent of playing to beat an opponent in the second half instead playing to win, which i thnik we did from midway third quarter. we needed to put la tech away early.

and, clearly to me and many others, pilares is our best running back. and if we are to run the ball 25 times per game then give it to the one with best God given talents.

i was hoping to see more option type plays.

  373. al October 12, 2008 12:40 am

  379. cocobean October 12, 2008 12:51 am

BTW, my comments about Ron Lee are in no way meant to be critical, just my observations. At this point of the season, he has to be more of a manager in play calling rather than a gunslinger. Inoke is still evolving. It’s essential to grow his confidence by calling plays that play to his strenghts and to keep him away from throws he is still learning to make. JJ would throw, Ron will manage.

  380. Long Time UH Fan October 12, 2008 12:53 am

    Al,

Yeah sounds like Mack has to move his schedule up one day earlier because it’s a short week for him. They play Boise State on Friday so game plan has to be developed a day earlier.

    Aloha, Tsaikos Ohana!!

Enjoyed seeing you all at the Tsaikogate. Sorry to have missed the music but youngest son had practice till 3 pm. Thanks for sharing your food with my two large sons. They both went through several helpings of the Evil Twins PBS.

Nice to meet you, Nalani. We are all looking forward to the Na Leo CDs!!

I thought the game showed that last week’s win at Fresno was not a fluke. The Warriors are a work in progress, and they are doing fine.

They are stepping out of the shadow of June Jones and Colt, and establishing their own identity, one that is more balanced, and views a two touchdown lead as something that is not going to evaporate instantly.

It is not as exciting to watch as June’s games were. But sometimes I think June’s teams beat themselves by scoring too quickly, putting the defense back on the field before it had time to catch its breath.

So far, it appears the Mack Attack is more deliberate, and focused on the position on the field and clock management. As the last half showed, when we have a good lead, it can feel like watching paint dry. With 12 minutes to go in the game, La Tech was three scores down and time was their enemy. Every time Hawaii got the ball, they took it down to 1 or 2 seconds before snapping the ball, and just ate time in big chunks, running and running and running. Even when La Tech got the ball, even with their no huddle offense, it just took them too long to get down the field. The window for La Tech kept narrowing and narrowing to the point where it was impossible for them to get back in to the game.

Pauoa Boy and others commented on the fact that the stadium emptied out but I think to those of us who were in the stands, it did feel like the victory was inevitable, and it was understandable why some fans might want to beat the traffic, especially, as Steven pointed out, the transit station on Salt Lake Boulevard still hasn’t been built.

I agree with others who have pointed out that Viili doesn’t seem to have a clue about when to start cheers going. We were in the North End, and Hawaii had the ball pretty close to the end zone. All of sudden, there was competition between the East and West side of the North End stands. It seemed like it was a version of the old Rain … Bows cheer, and just at the point where Inoki was bringing them up to the line for the snap. I looked down and there was Viili, pointing to one side and the other, putting his hand to his ear and encouraging them to cheer!!

Almost as bad were the drunks in the yellow zone above us who kept trying to start the Wave when we were on offense. Unclear on the concept of cheering for the home team!!

I thought I saw a guy in a black shirt and lei talking to Viili about the cheering, and afterwards he walked up into the stands to greet somebody. Maybe somebody is getting the word from the blog!!

See you all Friday afternoon!! Where will the Tsaikos be watching the game?

Lengthy post tonight to compensate for all the lurking I do. LOL

    Top of Sunday Morning.

Greeeeat way to start off the day with another “Ono” breakfast and coffee. !
Mucho Congrats to our Warriors and fans for their support. Everyone helped make a difference.

Still confused how there is almost a 3,500 attendance discrepency with our media writers @ 36,765 and official UH site @ 40, 246?

When will this Nonsense stop and be corrected ?

  385. Garret October 12, 2008 6:45 am

    Maverick,

Big difference between tickets sold and the number of people who attended the game. UH counts tickets sold for their attendance numbers–that helps make the number bigger and it represents revenue UH is making. The media reports that turnstile count, as the number of people who attend the game is relevant to the game reports.

This has been going on for a LONG time, and is not just the case for UH.

  386. Garret October 12, 2008 6:51 am

It was great to read the comments on the blog last night and follow the game. I chose not to participate because I was really down last night and didn’t want to bring down the others here.

Prayers and thoughts to Uncle Harry. He watched the volleyball game on TV with my parents Friday night and went to sleep happy after the win. He suffered a stroke in his sleep that night and unfortunately will not be waking up. I hope that my parents were able to mask how they were feeling when they were at the Tsaiko-gate…

    Good Sunday morning all!

After that win last night it really is a good Sunday morning. The sun is out and the skies are crystal clear — not a cloud in sight. And, the air is a crisp low 50’s.

It finally looks like the offense is finding its footing. But it looks like the receivers are not able to get as open as the past years. As the illustrious Pride., and others, have said we have been spoiled in the past several years.

Good to see the defense continues to be the backbone of the Warriors. Yahoo! The “D” is back!

And, the special team play has definitely shown improvement. Scoring and, more importantly, stopping the returns.

Yes. This is definitely a good morning.

  388. Maverick October 12, 2008 7:02 am

    Morning Garret
First off, my condolences to Uncle Harry. Hoping he lived a long and happy life. Not a bad way to pass on with a smile on his face from an enjoying moment before laying to rest.

And always a big mahalo to you for all your time and effort sharing your postings with us from the UH world and beyond.

    Hi A-House,

I remember you saying you sat in Yellow Section, South End Zone. We took advantage of the UHAA promotion of buying one ticket and get one complimentary ticket. We ended up in South End Zone, Red Section BB. First time we’ve sat there. We started buying season tickets when Aloha Stadium opened and sat in North End Zone, Orange Section S. Then we moved to Mauka Sidellines, Yellow Section LL; and finally to Makai Section , Blue Section N. We gave up our seats there in ’06 due to my illness. My son and grandson still sit there. So we were buying tickets to only the games that I was OK to go. I managed to see three games in ’06 including the Hawaii Bowl game. Last year I went to two games–Utah State and New Mexico State. It was at the NMSU tail gate that I met you and your lovely wife (also at a cattle call at the Best Western Plaza Hotel) and a whole bunch of Tsaikos. And I got to meet your precocious daughter, Midori7, at the Ronnie and Rich2176 get together at Genji’s. Hmm, maybe some day I’ll meet your son in Vegas. You have a great family A-House!

  419. BowsForever October 12, 2008 11:10 am

Replay’s on right now. End of the first quarter intentional pass interference by Hawaii really merits a punishment rep or two — aside from the push-out happening way before the ball even got there, “saving a touchdown” when the line of scrimmage is on your 17 gets you nowhere, IMHO. On the other hand, that forced fumble by Fonoti just before the goal line later that series was simply brilliant. I really think the D is still just not quite as consistent as it could be, though the results were impressive.

  420. BowsForever October 12, 2008 11:17 am

Hey, is a defender allowed “incidental” facemask contact when making a play against a receiver? Pilares got over-the-top mugged on that last play (though it was a very high pass)
