Friday notes: Davis, Manley, exhaustion

Notes on a Friday:

• Wide receiver Trevor Davis has requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship. He is seeking to transfer. Davis had 17 receptions for 235 yards and two touchdowns as a true sophomore in 2012.

• Former Leilehua High quarterback Andrew Manley is transferring to Eastern Illinois. (Former UH player Dino Babers is the Panthers’ head coach.) Earlier this month, Manley was granted a release from his New Mexico State scholarship.

• The Warriors opened the offseason conditioning program with an exhaustive workout this morning. It was the debut of Gary Beemer, the Warriors’ newly hired strength/conditioning coordinator.

Three Navy Football players being investigated for alleged sexual assault.

    BEAT USC!!

  5. jm2375 May 31, 2013 7:57 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Best wishes to Mr. Davis in his future endeavors.

Stay cool today, seems like it’s going to be a hot one!

  6. madeinhawaii May 31, 2013 8:09 am

Wonder if the Naval Academy will ultimately sweep this sexual assault case under the table as they have in the past? Or will the perpetrators be made an example of with all the newly intensified scrutiny towards sexual misconduct in the military?

  7. TKT May 31, 2013 8:10 am

My bet is that he goes to SJSU

  8. tommui May 31, 2013 8:14 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Good luck to Andrew Manley – I assume his family emergency is all resolved.

  9. chawan_cut May 31, 2013 8:14 am

Stephen, did you also take part in the start of the offseason workout program?

  10. Shoko May 31, 2013 8:19 am

The traditional hazing that occurs among recruits sometimes can get out of control and cross the line where it can be considered as sexual assault.

  11. gobows May 31, 2013 8:20 am

new mexico state changed to a spread option type offense and are going with mobile qb’s. all of a sudden andrew was looking at 3rd and possibly 4th on the depth chart.

  12. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2013 8:24 am

There’s been talk that Wisconsin is interested.

Dave Aranda is the Badgers’ defensive coordinator.

  13. Old School Dave May 31, 2013 8:25 am

I thought that Andrew Manley wanted to transfer somewhere closer to home due to some family matters? On the other hand, walking on at UH isn’t cheap anymore at over $4,000/yr. for residents. Nonetheless, best of luck to Andrew.

Woo hoo! All of a sudden I jumped to first post! Kind of like when Foodland opens a new checkout stand and for some reason everyone in front of you moves over there, leaving you first in line. I’ll take it. Fourteenth first I believe…

  16. Old School Dave May 31, 2013 8:40 am

Back in the 70s, tuition was $480/yr for residents. Registration was held in Klum Gym.

  17. Bowwar May 31, 2013 8:43 am

Davis’ departure is a surprise as he was penciled in as one of the starters…Too bad, I wonder what caused him to leave especially since it appears that the offense will be throwing more this coming year…

As for Manley, it was reported on Hawaii News Now that he was going to Eastern Washington, not Eastern Illinois. Both are DII, but at least Washington is closer to home if he left NMS due to family concerns. (i.e. sick brother)

Best of luck to both Trevor and Andrew…I hope they do well wherever they end up.

I’m starting to get that “sinking” feeling again about the UH Football program, so hopefully, that’s just the lack of tradewinds.

  18. Bowwar May 31, 2013 8:49 am

#20: Yep, I still remember running from one side of Klum to the other trying to fill my classes…It’s amazing how much tuition has gone up and the quality of education has either stayed the same or gone down. Although I sent both of my kids to mainland colleges, I still feel that UH is a “bargain” compared to what you have to pay on the mainland.

In fact, one mainland college president asked “why” so many island kids leave the islands to get an education when they have a “decent” college in the islands…I told him, exposure and “rock fever.”

  21. Tolkein Warrior May 31, 2013 8:55 am

    Good morning all…

You can read a Q & A with Ben Jay in today’s SA. Will shed some light on some questions I have seen folks ask here. Horse’s mouth and all. Section A, I think it was in.

Sinking feeling? Head up bro. We’re moving up. Good thing you’re not a USC fan. Did you read PolyMom’s post? Crazy. (#55 from yesterday)

  22. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2013 9:04 am

Manley gets to play right away for Eastern Illinois, so he doesn’t have to deal with applying for an NCAA transfer exemption.

  23. Stephen Tsai May 31, 2013 9:05 am

Davis is a good player, a good guy, and he has a really nice family.

    He’ll be missed.

But there are five receivers coming in.

  24. Bowwar May 31, 2013 9:05 am

USC has “numbers” and we don’t…Nonetheless, this year might be our best chance at beating USC, as they’ve lost a number of players and their depth is suspect.

Gotta hope that our incoming freshmen and redshirts can step-in and contribute right away or its gonna get ugly quick.

  25. Old School Dave May 31, 2013 9:07 am

Read the Dave Reardon article on the difficulties just to put up some video towers at the practice field. Moving away from dependence on State money and more from private donors is the way to go. The sooner, the better for the program. May be cheaper to just video tape practices from the dorms, for the time being.

  26. Rodney May 31, 2013 9:23 am

    Best to Trevor!

  27. SteveM May 31, 2013 9:24 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Good luck to Trevor Davis!

  28. Old Diver May 31, 2013 9:27 am

    #24

Just don’t see that as a plausible reason. Who leaves as the penciled in starter because of 5 newcomers who will probably not see much or any playing time at all.

  29. Mangoman May 31, 2013 9:29 am

Also on the Panther’s coaching staff is former Warrior, Kim McCloud, Defensive Coordinator (“A native of Los Angeles, Calif., McCloud was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at Hawai’i earning honorable mention All-WAC honors as a defensive back. He was a 1990 All-WAC Academic team selection earning his degree in 1991.”)

  30. turfwar May 31, 2013 9:33 am

Good luck Trevor. But another door opens for one of the incoming wr recruits. Sounds like the guy who’s most ready to play will get a real chance to play as first year players including the JC prospect.

  31. A-House May 31, 2013 9:38 am

It has to be disappointing to fans whenever a “penciled-in” starter decides to transfer so close to fall training, but we do not know or privy to the intimate details.

Good or bad sign is that Coach granted his request to leave w/o any restrictions.

  32. A-House May 31, 2013 9:39 am

    ST your #12:

Wisconsin is interested in “what?” you referring to Trevor Davis? or they want a game with UH?

  33. SteveM May 31, 2013 9:41 am

    RE: #17 & 19

Old School Dave & Bowwar — ahh, Klum gym registration. Actually worked pretty well for a manual system. I remember picking up the (IBM) punch card for the course/section I wanted (if lucky) from the tables situated around the gym and turning them in with your name punch card when you paid your registration fee. My decade cost around $120 🙄 and the sports ticket book was $15.

Looks like sports fee did not keep up with registration costs over the years…

  34. A-House May 31, 2013 9:42 am

well, with TD leaving it opens the window for a current or incoming player to show his stuff and fill in as the next starter.

1st day of “training” – for those who slacked off from spring ball to now will feel the pain starting tonight and especially tomorrow – then coach will really know who committed himself to conditioning in the “off-season”.

  35. d1shima May 31, 2013 9:42 am

USC has “numbers” and we don’t…Nonetheless, this year might be our best chance at beating USC, as they’ve lost a number of players and their depth is suspect.

Gotta hope that our incoming freshmen and redshirts can step-in and contribute right away or its gonna get ugly quick.

No more “sinking feeling”? Sounds like you’re pretty bullish on the way Hawaii’s freshmen and redshirts stack up against Da Rubbahs’!

  36. wasabi May 31, 2013 9:43 am

31 – not plausible at all. Especially if he’s transferring to a program that’s in a bigger conference…

  37. d1shima May 31, 2013 9:44 am

    😳

    Great Morning All!

  38. Derek May 31, 2013 9:44 am

It’s possible that Davis got beat out by Chris Gant. Regardless, I like the receiving corps that we have. Maybe short on a lot of experience, but a lot of potential and upsides in the group. We’ve got short receivers, we’ve got some 6’3″, 6’4″ trees coming in. I like Haynes. I like Polk. I like Barker. I like Kirkwood. I like Kemp. I like Stutz. I like Sampson. I like Gant. I like Harding. There are others waiting for their shot. Hawaii football will thrive in 2013.

To Trevor Davis, good luck in your future endeavors in football and in life. Your good family will be there for you. Thanks for being a Warrior.

  39. Bueller555 May 31, 2013 9:46 am

Regarding the video towers: Granted that I don’t know or understand video technology, but isn’t it possible to use remotely controlled cameras on a mobile, telescoping platform in lieu of risking the safety of someone to physically control a camera? I’m not talking drone technology, but a tilt and pan camera mount, a long cable, and a camera operator firmly planted on the ground.

  40. Derek May 31, 2013 9:50 am

Next year, we’ve got John Ursua coming back from his church mission. He is an athlete, just like Keelan Ewaliko. He can play receiver, QB, safety, and even point guard for Gib Arnold. I look for him to play both football and basketball at UH just like Ostrowski. Tuileta is going to try to play volleyball and football at UH so it’s nothing new. Other two sport player who played, Alama-Francis and Tony Akpan. There are others.

  41. A-House May 31, 2013 9:58 am

in my day, registration fee was $85/semester and athletic card was $12/semester.

SteveM – good point about the athletic fee not keeping up with tuition fees – wonder why? perhaps it was during the years where UH averaged over 40,000 fans each year and UHAD or upper campus saw no need to charge more.

reminder: do not spend the “projected” income before it’s in the bank like the State of Hawaii – continued lower number of tourists coupled with less spending does not bode well for Hawaii – while the construction industry will pick up based on projected developments including rail, it won’t be till 2014 when we see the return of the “steel cranes” that dot the skyline leading to higher employment, more taxes for the State and counties, and more “spending dollars” for many.

perhaps one of the good things about living in Hawaii and its “isolation” – we seem to weather the financial crisis better than our mainland counterparts

with electric technology growing by leaps and bounds, the grasp of a warm handshake will be forgotten – like the movie with Sly Stallone and Sandra Bullock where “sex” was a “brain” exercise

  42. warriorboi May 31, 2013 10:01 am

ST, is there a post spring depth chart? Why hasn’t it been released?

  43. A-House May 31, 2013 10:03 am

    #39:

transferring to a “bigger conference” means bigger, stronger, and faster WR – if TD was beat out by Chris Gant, how would he stack up in a bigger conference?

  44. jimmy the lock May 31, 2013 10:13 am

    Stupid joke Friday.

I had an exhaustive workout the other day, fixed my muffler.

  45. d1shima May 31, 2013 10:23 am

The counselors would tell you to have at least 3 different schedules mapped out prior to entering Klum Gym so that you’d be prepared for closed out classes.

As a Freshman, it was a waste of time and effort…10 pre-planned schedules wouldn’t be enough!

You’d see people sitting on the floor crying in frustration….happened every semester.

  46. d1shima May 31, 2013 10:25 am

    Mr. Spammer,

I don’t know the reason of why you’re not posting under your moniker and I’m sorry to see that… But what you’re doing now isn’t cool in any way… This blog is a place for all of us who love Hawaii Football to come together from anywhere in the world… As the article ST mentioned earlier states, “Tsai may have the most loyal readership of any beat reporter in the country.” Guys like me who live 5000 miles away enjoy talking UH sports with such informed and dedicated fans…

We can all be passionate and argumentative (or maybe a bit drunk) at times but we all have one thing in common… We all love Hawaii Football… Let’s keep this Blog a cool place for all “Rainbow” Warrior fans from all over the globe to unite…

    Cool?

Per my kid…status of USC players. 7 players out for season including Farmer.

Another 22 players hurt and injured at Spring ball.

New QB…did you watch their Spring game? Sorry Max Wittek he’s not so good. Wonder if thy will be deflating his balls like they were doing for Matt Barkley. Note to UH…need official on side line to watch their balls. It was finally admitted to that the so called Manager was deflating balls from Game 1. Only Oregon noticed and USC was BUSTED!

Remember USC is still on schollie sanctions. Don’t expect their season to be better then last years. Heck Hawaii’s schedule is tough. And morale is low due to the loss of Kennedy Polamalu.

  77. PolyMom May 31, 2013 5:06 pm

  79. Former UH Athlete May 31, 2013 5:49 pm

Davis is not a big loss. Stutz is the top returner, Sampson is 100% healthy and ready to fly, plus 5 new WRs that are Chow’s guys. Davis saw the writing on the wall.

Best of luck to him on his next stop.

  80. Dino May 31, 2013 6:32 pm

i recall true freshman (at the time) Davis catching a TD pass against BYU in the last game of McMackin’s tenure. He showed some speed on that play with some impressive RAC yardage on a short pass. I thought at that moment Davis would be a big time receiver in subsequent years.

  81. Mangoman May 31, 2013 7:56 pm

Wishing TD all the best in his future!

TD decision to finally leave the program has absolutely nothing to do with playing time…..nor anything to do with present and/or incoming WR competition.

TD had been contemplating this move ever since Spring Ball ’12. Eventually became just a matter of time…..after HS buddy Jared Leaf left after last season…..then mentor Ashley Lelie before Spring ’13.
