Friday night lights

The Warriors conclude spring training with the “Spring Fling” this evening at the Ching complex.

There will be a clinic beginning at 5:30 p.m., with an alumni flag football game at 6.

The Warrior Bowl begins at approximately 7 p.m.

Norm Chow said it will  be a situational scrimmage. The defense will be awarded points for turnovers and where it stops the offense. For instance, a red-zone drive that forces a field goal gets more points than the offense stalling at its own 30. Offense gets its usual points for a touchdown or  field goal.

Chow said there will be no points awarded for a first down or a sack, noting both units “are supposed to do that.”

Chow had said he expected the event to end at about 8:30 p.m.

Not publicized, but there will be several high school juniors attending the event as part of unofficial visits.

Of note:

• Tavita Woodard, who has spent 10 practices as a tight end, returned to defensive end yesterday. Chow said the defense needed extra bodies for the Warrior Bowl. Defensive end Paipai Falemalu, for instance, will be used sparingly. Chow said a decision will be made this summer whether Woodard stays at defensive end or goes back to tight end.

• Calen Friel, who practiced as an offensive lineman on Tuesday, also went back to defense yesterday. No decision on whether Friel plays on offense or defense this fall. He’s wanted on both sides.

• Want to impress your co-workers? Google the name Ryan Pasoquen. He was the Warriors’ No. 1 nickelback yesterday. Quick bio: Pasoquen is a 2011 Leilehua High graduate who redshirted last year. Until recently, he was a safety. Pasoquen and Dante Johnson have been impressive at nickelback.

• Waylon Lolotai practiced at tight end yesterday, two days after moving to fullback. The coaches wanted to give more fullback reps to Justin Vele, a converted linebacker.

• Darius Bright finally got rid of the yellow jersey worn by limited-contact players. Bright, who is competing at tight end,  made several nice catches.

• It’s fun to watch tight end Craig Cofer block.

• Safety Brandon Leslie has what is described as a unique back injury that is preventing him from practicing.

• Mike Edwards is the No. 1 kickoff returner. Trevor Davis is Edwards’ backup.

This will be the final Warrior football event for student managers Jaki Falch and Kyle Kamau. Both have worked every practice and game the past five years. (Kyle actually graduated in December, but came back to volunteer this semester.)

They’ll be missed.

The Rainbow Wahine softball team will have an autograph session following tonight’s game. Head coach Bob Coolen decided it would be better to do it at that time than in the emotional aftermath of tomorrow’s Senior Day.

One basic business rule is: Don’t compete against yourself.

Or is it?

It was a scheduling coincidence, but I like the idea of the Warrior Bowl and the softball game being held at the same time.

There’s the assumption that there’s a fixed fan base; that attendance will be hurt because of simultaneous events. I’m not sure that’s the case. I think more people will go to the Lower Campus this evening than if there were only one event. That will help concessions and parking. (Both sporting events are free.)

That’s why I’ve always felt Oceanic should air two UH events at the same time on its two channels. In the end, Oceanic would get ad revenue from both telecasts.

That’s also why Walmart doesn’t care if somebody shops at Walmart or Sam’s Club.

* * * * *

In a game of chicken, sometimes it’s better to keep the foot on the gas pedal.

The NFL considering dumping the Pro Bowl?

Nice bluff.

There’s too much money involved. The game gets good ratings and it fills a void. Besides, every NFL player has a Pro Bowl-bonus clause. Sure, the bonus could go to making an All-Pro team. But with Super Bowl players unable to participate and several with mysterious owies, as many as 18 players could be added to the bowl, meaning more players can collect bonuses.

What the NFL doesn’t want is flopping or half-okole efforts. I’m sure if the players promise — cross their hearts and hope to spit — that they’ll give a more convincing effort, the game can survive.

OK, I’m mostly sure.

Lots of interesting news… mainly that we’ve got some really talented guys on the defensive side that can pick up offensive positions. If anything, at least it will give them a better field of vision on defense, in knowing how the offense thinks.

Cool that Coach Coolen moved the autograph sesh up a day. I have a feeling there will be another once this season is finally pau. We’re just past the halfway point! Go, Wahine!

Gratz and mahalo nui to those who work behind the scenes to help make things run right.

I think the Pro Bowl’s issue is with those stars who represent the NFL, more than it is with any venue location. These guys have all said they love making the trip to Hawaii, bringing family and friends with them. We’ll see how things pan out.

    And finally… of course…

  20. WarriorNY April 27, 2012 6:08 am

So Cayman Shutter is pleading not guilty? This is crazy and we still don’t have a number 1 QB. And what happens if he is acquitted? Man what a sad story. He probably could’ve been the favorite going into summer. With our recent struggles at QB, will Coach Chow now look for a JC or graduating player?

  21. Slugger April 27, 2012 6:13 am

    Good morning, gang!

It’s been great seeing Jaki & Kyle at practices. They are good people. Congrats on graduating.

Best of luck to all Warrior Bowlers tonight.

I noticed at last year’s Pro Bowl that the defense seemed to play much harder when (S)Cam Newton was in the game. Coinkydink? 😆

Never saw so many mainland folks in one place at one time, either. The Bowl is good for Hawai’i, let’s hope they keep playing it, and keep playing it here.

More worse, I believe Shutter’s next court appearance is in July. Hope he can work out with the team before then. Like you, I believe in second chances. BTW- hope you’re feeling better.

Many things still seem quite fluid going into summer.

Is that intentional on the HC’s part to keep everyone interested as they work towards the fall?

  32. BG April 27, 2012 7:32 am

    Good morning bloggers!

Talked to Slugger last nite and noted that the Cal player will probably surpass Steph in about 10 days at the rate her votes are being cast. Although it’s hard to estimate votes because a percentage is given instead of the number of votes, I’m estimating that Cal is pushing in well over 1,000 votes a day and probably closer to 2-3,000. You do the math. How many Cal fans are even in the stands for one of their games?

We talk incessantly about the players trying their best and representing well. I would ask the question, “Is the reverse true, and is a fan supposed to try real hard to support the players?” My answer is “yes”. If you agree, perhaps we need to caucus off-stage. We we don’t get it going right now we’ll be too late as Cal will have all the momentum.

Someone speculated that Cal has a pc program to stuff the ballot box. I discounted that since the voting procedure with the text string being required is supposed to prevent that. However, a huge number of Cal votes seem to come in during the early morning hours when normal people are sleeping. That doesn’t add up to being above board. For example, this morning I checked the change from 11pm last night. Arioto had gained almost a full percentage point and Steph had lost .5%. I’m guessing (without any substantial basis) that 3-4,000 votes came in for Cal from 11pm to 6:30am HST.

More trouble for Coach Gib…from the Star Advertiser:

Stokes leaving UH after 1 year

Shaquille Stokes might yet live up to his considerable hype as the one-time New York City Player of the Year. He’ll just be doing it elsewhere.

The freshman point guard became the fourth player this spring to leave the Hawaii men’s basketball program prematurely, announcing on Thursday his intentions to transfer to a school closer to home on the East Coast.

“My grandma being sick … I’m going closer to home to be able to see my family whenever I can,” Stokes said. “That’s really about it.”

Stokes, who averaged 8.4 points and 2.2 assists in 30 games, was asked if it was purely a matter of distance.

“A lot of things worked out for me (here), but it’s something that me and my parents spoke (about). … It was a family decision,” he replied. “It has nothing to do with the coaches; it’s been great here with the coaching staff. It has to do with my family.”

  36. kev-1 April 27, 2012 7:44 am

    Question for you guys . . .

Now that spring training is at its end, would a reinstatement of Shutter between now and the fall be too soon? Is that what people are expecting? Or is it expected that he’ll be out even longer?

The sting of the incident has faded (okay, for some maybe not) and he did miss out on a valuable spring that cost him significant position on the depth chart. Punishment served? Or do we need to see how the case plays out first?

    Re: Shutter.

    • He’s on suspension for breaking team rules (being arrested), not for violating the athletic department’s code of conduct.

    • There is a presumption of innocence for every accused person. If he’s found guilty, this falls under the school’s “major” violation category, and he would face an extended suspension.

    • Every accused is entitled to his/her day in court. Even if the accusation is justified, why not give it a shot? Maybe the machine malfunctioned. Maybe he was improperly pulled over. Maybe the officer doesn’t show up. You don’t face additional punishment by going to court.

  48. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2012 9:10 am

At the core, Shutter is a good guy and a good teammate. He would always stay after practice to throw to teammates. He tried to help Bryant Moniz become a better quarterback. And he’s a good student. He was invited to the scholar-athlete dinner the other night.

  49. Wes'side Warrior April 27, 2012 9:14 am

Could also be any and all PAC-24 fans voting for their rep, (especially since it’s not USC or UCLA), plus their butlers, maids, chauffeurs, gardeners, pool boys, masseuses, therapists, orthodontists, attorneys, and whomever else they can get to log in for a free hot meal and a day’s farm wages.

Would be helpful to us for conference members to push the vote too, but since we’re leaving…

I hear ya, Wes’side. But, I think you’d be hard pressed to get those folks to vote at 2-6am. Plus there are some other conference ladies representing and they are not getting the same votes…you can vote for 3 at a time. Can’t worry much about what they’re doing, we can only manage what we’re doing…hmmmm…where have I heard that thought before 😀

  52. dh April 27, 2012 9:25 am

Looking forward to the spring game tonight. Interested in seeing Gant and Gregory get out there.

  53. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2012 9:29 am

    Re: Sand volleyball

Stay up late enough, and you can watch those commercials about the great sites in Alabama.

    It’s all about marketing.

As the advertisers like to say: Who cares what the hamburger tastes like? It’s the packaging that counts.

  54. homey ℞ April 27, 2012 9:31 am

If you are knowledged in PHP and the CURL library then you can write code and send your program/scripts to the voting server to vote many times. To find out the voting server info you can use Firefox or chrome developers tools to display the code. Your program will execute automatically…no clicking or refreshing on your part.

I’m ignorant on this subject so I wouldn’t be able to code it. Maybe chawan could since he’s an IT guru.

  55. kev-1 April 27, 2012 9:32 am

So really, they can’t reinstate Shutter until it plays out in court?

I agree that he’s a good kid. The evidence to support that is tremendous. I’m ready for him to be back in the fall.

  56. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2012 9:40 am

Spring ball ends tonight, so, basically, they’re on their own until training camp.

If he wanted to throw passes to teammates next week, nobody is going to stop him.

  57. whitey April 27, 2012 9:56 am

Starting Satueday, it will be vely, vely interesting to see how each warrior gets ready for fall practice. I think the cream will start rising, but yeast and baking soda will make it a competition to the top (starting lineup).

  58. BigWave96744 April 27, 2012 9:58 am

Out of HS some called Ryan Pasoquen an Art Laurel type hitter at Safety. Leilehua HC Nolan Tokuda called him “a missle”.

Hey Stephen I don’t know if you remember which players were at Norm’s 1st press conference, but I know sitting smack dab in the middle of the room was Cayman 🙂

  59. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2012 10:02 am

  60. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2012 10:03 am

I remember UH had a safety nicknamed Torpedo Head.

    Just a ferocious hitter.

But he kept getting injured in practice. Don’t recall if he played much.

But he did well in his second career. He’s Niko Vitale.

I posted a couple of times for Firefox users to go to Tools (private browsing) but I don’t know how you automate the stuff in the Lowe’s site other than by hand which I have been doing.

I have also mentioned this to people not on TWB to help. The last time I voted (about 5 minutes ago!) we were 6%+ better than Arioto and about 8% ahead of Cassie (Alabama).

Lots of good thoughts, ST. Very excited about going to tonight’s Spring Fling…especially because the alternative was to work. 🙂 Still room to join us in the Nā Koa tent with dinner starting at 6 and a chance to meet Coach Chow and other coaches after the scrimmage. Come on out…we’ll see you there!

For hoop fans, Dayton Morinaga has a video interview on warriorinsider with Shaquille Stokes, who had positive things to say about Hawaii, the basketball program and his teammates. He said he learned a lot from Miah, whom he called “a role model,” and reiterated that his decision to leave had nothing to do with the previous departures.

  101. Bryson April 27, 2012 3:35 pm

    BIK,

In regards to JT Turner I can see him ending up as a Safety and JHT staying at his natural CB position…He does have the size to play either but I also have a feeling we will see alot of subbing in the secondary especially if they are gonna play a man defense the coaches are gonna need fresh legs on the field.

  102. d1shima April 27, 2012 3:43 pm

WOW – you guys are too good!

The votes from Upcountry is pulling Stephanie with a little more room away from Arioto.

Can’t slack off yet – 19 more days to go until the polls are closed. Don’t let those others catch up. VOTE!

  107. d1shima April 27, 2012 4:15 pm

No doubt. 3rd Round is a big coup (merci, or not) for a guy who didn’t play a snap his Senior year.

  108. Stephen Tsai April 27, 2012 4:16 pm

I think it’s funny that Kiper wimps out when he interviews Russell Wilson about his height. It’s different when he has to leave his basement and talk with a real person.

She was actin’ a fool all night long. It was really funny. Flashin’ more signs then we get on the H-1 fwy…She was worth the price of admission! (Mauwahi)

  174. Kekoa April 27, 2012 11:10 pm

lurkster ~ From what little I saw after the SB game, I have to agree with some of what you said. The ‘D’ was pressing the ‘O’ pretty hard. The work it’s going to take to get the ‘O’ on track will be a painfully slow process. It has only just begun.

Come this Fall, it’s still going to be a work in progress. We fans have to be patient and give coach Chow and his staff time to make it all come together.

  175. lurkster April 27, 2012 11:21 pm

why do we have to wait!!!!!! last years offense worked! what I saw tonight was crap. i liked what i saw from our defense tonight. why change the O philosophy? this bullcrap usc stuff ain’t happening. we are not gona get the horses to run it. chow has been a failure the last 8 years at ucla, utah and nfl. he has lost his touch.

  176. Kekoa April 28, 2012 2:29 am

Lurkster ~ Hmmm…I believe we’ve been down this road before. In fact, I know we have.

    G’nite all.

  177. Wes'side Warrior April 28, 2012 2:32 am

    Morning, everyone!

Great win for Wahine Softball! Keep it going!

As far as our football team… every year, at this time, it’s the same report… the defense is way ahead of the offense. And do we really need to rehash the “why the change?” argument? The past is the past. We’re moving forward. Everything else we’ve seen so far has been positive. I’ll wait until we get this next season under our belt before forming any conclusions. You ever come into a new job, and “think” you can do better than what the previous person(s) did? Good thing your boss(es) gave you a chance instead of kicking you to da curb just ’cause you never comb your hair da same way as da previous employee.

Anyways, I just cast my *ahem* vote~

  183. BigHiloFan2 April 28, 2012 5:01 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    lurkster,

I was in the stands last year, 3 times. one game was disappointing to see da fans on da turnstile, 3 big bruddaz, laughing as da enemy wen catch da punt and wen scoot across da field an towards ewa on da mauka sidelines. da 3 big bruddaz was laughing and saying

“…look…. look… he going score….” laughin at us. and da crowd was at a “all time high.”

    low 30 sumtin.

always gonna get summa us who neva/no like sumtin about our team. always. even fo Colt, gonna get critics who no like sumtin about him. okay, he not perfect, but he gave our State so much, soooooooooo much.

what i’m trying fo say is, I scared too. but I get more hope today then i had before we changed our Coach. And the players they like the action too. So give Coach chance. He’s our coach.

  184. BigHiloFan2 April 28, 2012 5:03 am

    Hiya wafan.

    Kekoa,

good morning friend. looking forward to catching up at a Tgate this coming season.

    Wafan ~

We know who these experts are, don’t we?

I wish you could have taken it ALL in last nite. What an absolutely perfect time time to be a loyal fan! The ladies were like a buzz saw in the bottom of the 5th inning.

When the rally started, the roar from the crowd was like spontaneous combustion! There was periods of foot stomping and shout outs to the players for their individual efforts. It was chaos ‘n crazy all rolled in one.

  186. d1shima April 28, 2012 5:19 am

Hopefully, the neighbors are used to it by now.

  189. wafan April 28, 2012 5:36 am

Yesterday, as usual, I wore one of my “H” shirts. While running around doing errands in the evening a lot of folks commented about the Warriors, Chow, and the SoftBows. All positive thoughts.

Some were active and former military stationed in Hawai’i, a few were UW/WSU alum’s, one was a Fresno fan who cannot stand Marge (actually cheering for the SoftBows!), and a bunch were young adults who just liked what they watched/heard of the Warriors and SoftBows.
