Freshman invasion; Mouse?

Several freshman football players yesterday attended orientation meetings and underwent physical examinations, giving them a head start in being cleared to participate in the official offseason conditioning program.

Among the newcomers are center Kody Afusia, kicker Tyler Hadden, defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau, wide receiver Bubba Poueu-Luna, slotback Allen Sampson, linebacker T.J. Taimatuia, defensive end Beau Yap and quarterback Kevin Spain.

They also are enrolled in a mid-summer-session classes. As part of the early enrollment, they are required to attend two hours of study hall each day.

Linebacker Siaki Cravens will arrive in town next month to attend Summer Sesssion II.

Also, defensive end Veni Manu, who signed in February 2009, apparently has earned enough college credits to play for the Warriors this season. He attended orientation sessions.

UH is expected to name new assistant coach tomorrow.

Mouse Davis arrives in town tomorrow for an interview. I’m pretty sure the guy who invented the offense that UH runs would be the front-runner, no?

“I’m always excited about the potential of it,” Davis said of the job. He said he was packing for the trip.

I’ve been sleeping. Here are some pics from yesterday’s 7-on-7 workouts:

Former UH wideout Ian Sample will visit for a week-long vacation before heading to Japan. He plays for IBM in a professional football league.

Former Warrior defensive ends Kevin Jackson and Karl Noa also play in that league.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY TO MIDORI7. I would have posted this earlier, but she’s the one who reminds me of birthdays. Congrats to a wonderful person and great neighbor.

$$$ HELP ACKNOWLEDGE THE 2010 RAINBOW WAHINE SOFTBALL TEAM $$$

In 2007 the reality of “extra” funding for UH’s non-revenue sports programs was evident. As the 2007 UH Football team was able to afford WAC Championship/Sugar Bowl rings, the 2007 WAC champion and Super Regional team had no money for anything for the players to acknowledge their achievements. However, as a result of the “aloha” of many fans, that team was able to have something to keep for themselves to remember their experience by.

In the year 2010, that very same program took UH softball to new heights and gave us many memories. It is time for fans to respond again, if they are able to.

This is a drive to raise funds for the 2010 Wahine Softball team’s bracelets acknowledging their Women’s College World Series appearance.

The total cost will be $2645.83, that comes to 115.03 per bracelet which falls well within the NCAA regulated “gift” amount to each player set at a maximum of $300.00 per student athlete.

The timeline goal needed to raise the total amount is set for mid-August 2010.

Please make all checks or money orders out to:

“UH FOUNDATION” it is important that you write in the memo part of the check “Wahine Softball Bracelets” by doing so the money can only be spent for the purchase of the bracelets. All funds donated will be tax deductible and you will will receive that in the mail from the Foundation.

    Please mail all checks to:
    Na Wahine Bracelet Fund
    3633 Puuku Mauka Dr.
    Honolulu HI 96818

***PLEASE MAKE SURE THE NAME AND MAILING ADDRESS AT THE TOP LEFT CORNER OF YOUR CHECKS ARE CURRENT AND CORRECT. UH FOUNDATION USES THIS INFO TO SEND PEOPLE THEIR RECEIPTS FOR TAX DEDUCTIONS.***

In working directly with UH administrators and the UH foundation, this year’s process will be smoother and the team will be able to receive their bracelets in a timely fashion.

If you have any questions please ask or email Pomai at pomai (at) tsai-kos.com.

    ====================================================
ONLINE DONATIONS FOR WAHINE BRACELETS CAN BE MADE HERE
    ====================================================

    https://www.uhf.hawaii.edu/give/giving-gift.aspx?allocation=12095304&site=AKA

The first line is already opened to “Women’s Softball”, just enter the dollar amount you wish.

***IMPORTANT*** Further down, you will see a “special instructions” box. Please type: 2010 WAHINE SOFTBALL BRACELETS.

There is NO “appeal code”. Leave that little box blank.

The next page will be where you enter your debit or credit card information. The website is automatically set so that this is a ONE time donation. You would have to manually click on the “monthly” option for this to be re-occuring.

***FOR ALL THOSE OPTING TO DONATE ONLINE PLEASE E-MAIL pomai@tsai-kos.com WITH THE AMOUNT YOU DONATED, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR REAL NAME***

The reason for this is because UH foundation will NOT release the names or the amounts of what goes into that account via online for security purposes and without knowing what the running total is, it will be difficult to see if we are over or under our goal.

MAHALO TO ALL OF THOSE THAT ARE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE.

where are all the local recruits of 2010?
only one, beau yap is in “session”.

    where’s the other twelve?
okay, so we know that at least one of them did not make it through…but where’s the rest?

  23. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 22, 2010 9:04 am

If more money is raised that is needed for purchasing the bracelets, will the overage go into the Wahine softball fund, the Tsaiko Fund for future purchases, or the general for for UH athletics?
As for the donation deadline of mid-August, how long will it take to create the bracelets and will there be a special ceremony sometime in the fall – at a football game or a volleyball match? I heard someone way that they’d be presented at a T-Party or T-Gate, but the public would not be coming to them and it’s important that the public acknowledge the victory as well.

In any case, our check was dropped in the mail last Friday so it should be in Pomai’s hands by now.

DPK: please call me as I have some information for you.

  31. J-Dog June 22, 2010 9:29 am

Nice update. Good to hear that Manu made it to Manoa. Slowly but surely, Coach Mack is filling out the roster with his recruits. We might take some rubs again this season, but it should be a turning point toward his goals of contending for WAC title each year and getting bowl-eligible each year as well.

I’m excited about Allen Sampson. He could fill the Jovonte Taylor kick returner role I think.

How funny with the puppy! Is jm2375 willing to wear sunglasses and walk around with a white stick so Our Mascot can attend all the games & matches?

Remember the mustangs at last year’s Sherton Hawaii Bowl? Will USC bring theirs as well – I remember seeing their Trojan Warrior on the white horse in person during the cross-town matchup with UCLA and was definitely impressed.

Once again, the blog section on the front page is empty. Finding this one is easy, but the other ones have flown out the window and are traveling somewhere past Saturn right now.

So do we need another coach looking over the OC’s shoulder? When will the head coach put trust in his coaches and let them coach? Is he not sure if the OC can actually do the job, so he brings in a mentor? Where will be the mentor’s recruiting area, Oregon? Is Oregon a hotbed for division one prospects? What happened to the young energetic wide receiver coach who can recruit in the L.A. city area? The one with tons of contacts in the city, who knows the coaches, and all the ex. players form the inner city high schools, near Rainbow Cliff’s backyard.

Nothing against the mentor, I love the guy? But I think that we need coaches who’s better days are ahead of them, not behind. If the mentor is actually hired, that will put the average age of our coaches at 51.1. Is that the what we need right now? Is that a coaching staff full of piss and vinegar, hungry for success, desperate to make their mark, full of stamina and endurance to last for days on end on the road?

    Sorry, just thinking aloud.

  50. homey ︻╦╤─ June 22, 2010 10:20 am

What’s wrong with being 51.1 years of age as a coach? ok, ok, Phil Jackson is not 51.1 years old nor does he coach football. Carry on.

Pride it all starts with the HC. Who is in charge? by committee, or game day or on the fly during the game. Cal as DC but he wasn’t calling the defensive signals the past few seasons. Will Aranda make the calls or does he look over his shoulder on each play and wonder, okay, is it a go, or you want to call something else.

-Any extra $$$$ will REMAIN with the softball program’s Koa Anuenue account under the UH Fourndation “umbrella”.

-In speaking with Pomai, we seem to be on track to meet the deadline.

-The actual making of the bracelets, according to Pomai isn’t a concern and will be done in a timely fashion.

  55. A-House June 22, 2010 10:31 am

al has an excellent point – where are the other 11 “local” players who signed with UH? – are they of the opinion that they do not have to do anything until fall camp starts? – “that’s too late, my friend”.

reminds me of a track & field runner who didn’t train for the 100 meter dash until the day of the race – how studip!!!

like hitting the weight room the day before camp starts – any athlete who has this attitude will not make it – I don’t car how talented he/she is.

So, on Wednesday morning they’ll be able to get on the field with the other players in the unsupervised practice. It might be a good one to attend. Although, we’ll probably see more as the summer progresses, since tomorrow will be their first practice with the others.

I would think that most of the incoming class would love to be out there working with the team. But I”m also questioning where are the local recruits? ST — do they need to be enrolled in summer school to be out there with the team? I don’t fault any freshman for not wanting to be in Summer school to start off their career. Summer school is more intense and not doing well in these classes would mean a junk gpa to start off their college careers. These boys here for the summer should be reminded of this. Also remember, most of these kids are probably paying their own tuition for the summer. At $260 (or so) per credit, I don’t blame them for not being here. That rate usually applies to all, whether in-state or out of state.

Doc all donations marked with “wahine softball bracelet fund” will be restrictive funds which means they can not be spent on anything other than the bracelets. The balance of the funds will be kept for future purchase’s of awards for the softball team.

    I stand corrected,
$282 per credit during the summer. That means, taking ONE class could cost a family damn near $1,000. Two classes? You get the picture.

  77. Shoko June 22, 2010 11:58 am

I remember that story that was printed in the Hawaii paper describing Mouse Davis and Nevada’s Chris Ault facing-off on the field.

“I don’t know how it started, he was just being a cantankerous little pip-squeak (Ault). I probably was, too. Maybe there was some shoving, but no punches thrown,” Davis said yesterday, between chortles in a phone interview from his home in Lake Oswego, Ore. “We got right up to the point where we were really ready to get it on. Then my defensive coordinator, Lynn Hewitt, he got between us. He could whip both of us at the same time, so I guess he won the fight. Afterward, Chris said, ‘I hope you’re gonna fire that guy (Hewitt).’ I said, ‘Hell no, I’m gonna give him a raise.”

Face-off between Mouse and Ault this season? I would pay to see that. 🙂

Pomai just clarified that the extra money will go towards a specific use (bracelets), but it does sit in that same softball account.

hasn’t the na koa been responsible for financing the summer session tuition costs?

    it is a great cause because it accomplishes two things;

one, the student/athlete can take summer courses to further along their degress process.

two, by doing such they can also take a lesser load in-season so that the work load is less then.

three, it keeps the athlete here during summer to participate in “voluntary unsupervised workouts.”

  88. al June 22, 2010 12:40 pm

i believe grayshirts who are properly enrolled may particpate in “voluntary unsupervised workouts.”

  90. Old Diver June 22, 2010 12:53 pm

    Pride,

“So do we need another coach looking over the OC’s shoulder?”

If Mouse Davis is chosen I don’t believe he will be looking over anyone’s shoulder. Rolo is young, having Mouse around gives him another experienced brain he can pick. When a coach gets to the point that he knows it all and won’t seek differing opinions he’s finished.

Pride – Agree with you 100%. I also, like others, would like to see another energetic, young
mastermind. I’m very happy with Rolo & Coach Aranda as Coordinators & hope Coach Mack will continue to make constructive changes like that, when necessary.

ST – Like Al, I’m also worried about the other No-Shows. Will they at least be making their appearance at Fall Camp? Or do we take it that they are academic casualties who may not arrive until 2011?

  105. Buffoman June 22, 2010 2:13 pm

Just my two cents but if they hired Mouse to be the OC didn’t they “retire” Ron Lee too early?

Age and wisdom going here folks.

    Mouse the OC.
    Rolo the QG coach
Ron Lee the wide receiver coach mentoring Ashley Lelie

    get where I’m going…

When Mouse JJ and Ron were up there, and Ron did the wide outs, we wer kicking you know what.

Just a wild second guess here.

BTW, age has nothing to do with knowledge of the game, whatever it may be. That old geezer up at Indy has Peyton Manning doing unbelievable things. Should he step aside because he’s not a young up and comer? Peyton didn’t think so.

  107. Kazz June 22, 2010 2:23 pm

    A blog mascot?

Maybe there is something we can make a sacrifice to?

    Perhaps some kind of monster?

Something with the body of a walrus with the (long pause) head of a lion or something with the body of a porcupine with the head of a monkey with antlers or something with (long pause) the body of an egret with the head of a (longer pause) meercat with the tentacles of an octopus…

  108. Buffoman June 22, 2010 2:32 pm

Sorry hit the wrong key. “QB”.

Still remember that Hawaii Bowl game when Rivers just torched the DBs from ASU. Remember seeing the first DB mouthing something in Rivers direction. At the end of the half they hadn’t really thrown to Rivers and the DB was mouthing again going off the field. I remember turning to my friend saying, I think Rivers is pis_ ed. He’s going to light that guy up come second half.

Dam_ if he didn’t just go crazy. I believe Ron was the wide out coach at the time and he must have seen something and made adjustments with JJ.

  110. ballpicker June 22, 2010 2:40 pm

Just got some sound on the computer I am using and bumped into the L and L show with JD.

And I just got the feeling that UH is very fortunate to have him as the AD. He is calm, articulate and loves Hawaii sports. Puts his heart into the work at hand and does it with a great fashion.

Imagine HF sitting there and attempting to answer those two. phhew…

It also occurred to me that why did the university pass on JD in the first place when he was the assistant AD and had applied for the top position. Shouldve been a slam dunk but maybe Hawaii politics got in the way.

Just based on that decision placed the university several years back. We’re still paying for that decision.

Thank goodness he is are athletic director. Go Warriors and just win baby just win.

    Just a thought. (JAT)

What does Mouse know about receiving techniques and did he do a good job the last time he was a coach with June and at Portland State with Glanville ?

  113. madeinhawaii June 22, 2010 2:58 pm

diehard… I think Portland led the nation in passing yards in their division while Mouse was coaching… although that didn’t necessarily translate to wins.

  139. Pride. June 22, 2010 3:59 pm

    Old Diver:

    June 22nd, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I have been a Mouse fan from the very beginning. I studied Mouse’s offense from back in the late seventies. I worked with Mouse in clinics in the late eighties. I do have a lot of respect for Mouse.

I am not saying that hiring Mouse would be a bad hire. What I am saying is that do we have the right amount of balance on our coaching staff. I don’t no what the answer is. It could be yes, it could be no. Everbody has an opinion about what the staff should look like. I’m just bringing in an opinion for us to take a look at, because it appears that most Tsai-kos are leaning to the side of Mouse being a positive hire. I like to stir the pot a little just to get us Tsaikos to share our views and opinions. Sometimes when I state opinions, they are just a points of view that a person can have. They are not necessarily mine. I just like to examine all sides of issues. I can argue quite convincingly why Mouse would be a good hire and at the same time i can argue why I think Mouse would not be a good hire.

Now, playing devil’s advocate again. When we look at the staff, we can look at the it from the perspective of field responsibilities. From that standpoint, we need to also turn it around and look at the staff from the perspective of recruiting responsibilities. There needs to be some degree of balance on the staff between recruiting, teaching, coaching, and game management. Do we have the right balance on our staff to maximize all areas of responsibilities?

From a recruiting perspective, is there balance on the staff from a geographical standdpoint? Who can recruit locally? Who can recruit in Northern California? Who can recruit in San Diego? Who can recruit in the city, in L.A.? Who has the contacts in the JC market? Who can effectively recruit in Samoa, or in Carson, Long Beach, or Oceanside?

What I’m really getting at though is do we have someone that can effectively recruit in rainbow Cliff’s backyard? This might have been a great opportunity to bring in someone who would be an asset in that area?

  140. cocobean June 22, 2010 4:00 pm

Mack should hire someone who can recruit. Kyle Whittingham said the one trait he looked for in all his coaches was the ability to recruit.

Mahalo to Scott for the continuous improvement of the blog. Soon we will see the video streaming by the Princess, no doubt. Waiting for the blog to morph into a cyber 3D experience where we don’t need glasses to see Koakane jump out from the computer screen yelling “Go Warriors”!

Maybe we could make 7 Halaus with male dancers our Mascots.. have them vie for performance time during the home games…. best of the seven at the end of the season (as voted by the fans) gets to perform at the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl in front of a National Audience ..

  186. MichiganWarrior June 22, 2010 6:56 pm

    Aloha everyone!
I almost don’t care who they bring on anymore… as long as they can put it all together into one awesome, complete, and consistent package. Lead the nation (or be in the top5) in the major offensive AND defensive categories; constantly attacking offense with a fierce & effective defense; AND error-free (with zero big plays given up) Special Teams.
I’d also like to see our per-home-game average jump up to 45k+, and not just put on a good show, but actually win those tough games that every preseason book says we’re supposed to lose.
One more thing… absolutely pulverize Boise State for jumping ship.

Please keep the bracelets updates coming. The Foundation may not give you names and amounts, but they should be able to answer “Are we over or under the goal?”. No?

Might be important to hit the goal as close as possible. From the sound of it, by making the note on the donation “Softball bracelets”, it limits the use only to procuring bracelets. Conceivably, a significant amount of money could sit in the account until the next championship…and what if the team then decides it wants something else other than bracelets? As we get close to the goal, we might want to make the note “Softball bracelets or other softball related use”. Just thinking out loud.

    Midori7 –
You are a wonderful person, and I suspect that your parents are just as wonderful. Just a gentle reminder, I am one of your best friends and I love steak and lobster.

  195. Curt June 22, 2010 7:38 pm

Last night as I was about to switch channels to watch Nightline, I saw one of your favorite actresses on Oprah…Raquel Welch. Can’t believe how good she looks at 69 years old. Wow…still a bombshell. Never made it to Nightline.

  205. Slugger June 22, 2010 9:22 pm

    Scott,

Thanks for getting the numbers on the posts & bolded names. Definitely helps when reading the blog intermittently.

Practice tomorrow at 7 am. I couldn’t tell you about the QBs since I was watching them intermittently… 🙂 Talking story with people. Will be interesting to see Kevin Spain throw tomorrow, I hope. Davidson was out there.

David Graves said his HS alma mater, Folsom, will be playing on ESPN the weekend before the USC game against Grant HS (IIRC). Top CA HS teams.

  206. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc June 22, 2010 9:50 pm

DPK – be sure to call me as I have some updated information for you.

Mahalo, Scott, for the numbers and the bold and and the margins. Now if we can only get a main page like we used to have with all the various blogs listed in one location.

madeinhawaii – checked with Garret re your idea about bringing foreign high school students here for a year to learn English and to play US sports as a potential recruiting tool down the road for UH. It is his opinion that this would violate NCAA rules about early recruiting outside of specific events which are open to all.

I do remember reading a handout that accompanied our season tickets for basketball, volleyball and baseball about what boosters can and cannot do with respect to high school or middle school students. What blew my mind was that these rules kick in at Grade 9 for all sports except basketball which starts at Grade 7 – six years before the kid goes off to college!!

    Back to work.

  207. Suzanne Edey June 22, 2010 10:20 pm

hi,The Motif of your blog is very good to me, I hope more exchanges with you this Burden.

  209. chawan_cut June 22, 2010 10:42 pm

how’d homey get a gun next to his name?

  210. madeinhawaii June 22, 2010 10:43 pm

The chances of a high school graduate having enough proficiency in English to enter UH as a full-time student without having studied abroad for at least one semester, is very remote. From my past experience as a teacher and curriculum designer in Japan (8 years) I would say that most would have to pay their way through a full-time ESL program before getting accepted (I sent thousands from Japan to various ESL programs in the US, UK and Australia). Fortunately, the full-day ESL program isn’t as expensive as UH’s regular tuition but the student is NOT officially enrolled in UH. The student would have to apply to UH after successfully completing the ESL program and getting an acceptable TOEFL score. It’s not going to be easy… Maybe we should be looking at Hong Kong and Singapore first, where they have a little better grasp of ESL.

  211. Moshe Radabaugh June 22, 2010 10:59 pm

  215. Ralph June 23, 2010 12:09 am

On June 5, the Santa Monica “Samohi Vikings” defeated the North Torrance HS to win the CIF SS Div 4 softball title. On the Samohi’s is UH recruit Kaile Nakao, infielder, who finished the season batting .500 (46 for 92), 8 Hrs, 34 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

    madeinhawaii…

And to complete my order, I’d like a cheeseburger deluxe, french fries, and one thick chocolate shake. Or should I get the hamburger deluxe with one side order cheese?

Just saying, it’s time we come out hot, maintain that intensity, and run up the scores on everyone like Boise State, Oklahoma, Florida, etc. No one really complained when they do it… let’s get little Hawaii into the mix! We need that killer instinct to put teams away quick and keep them down. The quicker we develop into a team like this, the earlier in the season we start filling Aloha Stadium and making extra (desperately-needed) money!

I still stay dreaming? Tell Fate Yanagi I love her!

  217. Jason June 23, 2010 1:06 am

  219. al June 23, 2010 1:26 am

    what no early commits?

  220. Pride. June 23, 2010 1:35 am

I actually like Rolovich as an OC and a playcaller. I think that he has a good attack style philosophy tries to widen and lengthen the field when he can. He also utilizes the run game adequately to take pressure off of the offensive line. I think if the offensive line can show more consistency, then the offense as a whole will look real good. Last year it appeared to me that the defense did well from a scheme standpoint, but suffered somewhat in the excecution deapartment. Of course that can be attributed to the lack of experience by the across the board defensively. The lack of experience contributed to the missed tackles. When you have players who are not real sure on their assignments, they will play tentatively and will not be aggressive when making tackles. If Hawaii can show continued improvement in the special teams phase, they will be quite competitive throughout the season in 2010. Hopefully Aaron Brown and Rodney Bradley will be able to return to pre-injury form by the start of the season. Moniz will have very capable playmakers in Salas, Pilares, Bradley, Green, and Dimude. Hopefully Darius Bright will learn enough in camp to be able to make a contribution on offense. I think he certainly has Randy Moss like physical skills and potential. Also looking forward to see what Allen Sampson can do on special teams. He might be our newest version of Jeff Sydner.

ST’s column in today’s edition, starts with …

    Recruits schooled in summer
Recently created session allows players to bond, earn school credits

    By Stephen Tsai
    POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Jun 23, 2010

How fast is University of Hawaii football recruit Allen Sampson?

So fast that – two weeks after participating in Plant High’s graduation ceremony in Florida – the slotback is enrolled at UH and on track to earning six credits before the Aug. 4 start of the Warriors’ training camp.

    Allen Sampson:
    Warrior slotback is on
    pace to earn six credits
    under newly created
    summer session that
    will run until the start
    of training camp
Sampson and nine other football freshmen are beneficiaries of a newly created UH summer session that runs from this week to the start of the Warriors’ training camp.

YEAH!!! FIRST!!!. oooh, sorry, not yet.

  226. Garret June 23, 2010 5:10 am

Texas looked at going independent and chose not to because of the difficulty in scheduling, especially for nonrevenue sports. If Texas cannot make it work with almost unlimited funding and much less travel demands, going independent for UH would be that much harder.

If texas is such a powerhouse, why not declare themselves independent like Notre Dame, pick and choose their opponents to their benefit and create their own national network?

Chuck Carlton: They did consider something like that. The problem would be scheduling for basketball, especially late in the season when everybody is in conference play. For the Olympic sports, it would be a nightmare.

  227. Garret June 23, 2010 5:17 am

It is great that UH created a mid-session that works so perfectly for the schedules of incoming freshman football players. This is a great example of the Academic side doing something that can significantly help the Athletics side while enhancing the academic experience of the student-athletes.

  233. RainbowCliff June 23, 2010 6:04 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

Pride & Ralph: Gentlemen Thank you for mentioning my “backyard” of talented athletes that surrounding schools have here in Los Angeles BUT until Hawaii makes a face down here with perspective H.S. Coaches as ALL that talent is going else where preferably the local colleges or JC route.

Washington H.S., Inglewood, Fremont, Leuzinger, Hawthorne, Dorsey and Junipero Serra runs Summer passing league through out this vacation time and majority of players stay for the 4 to 6 week programs in which they work on their individual skills, 7 on 7, weights and conditioning. Because of cut backs here in the Los Angeles School Districts Summer School is not an option so many of the recruited athletes seek out the area to attend South West JC or Charter Schools that will offer Summer courses that local H.S. will accept for make-up credits that they will need for elgibility or graduation.

USC and UCLA recruits Nationally BUT they will have on their rosters MANY of the mention school players above BECAUSE of their ties to local area coaches and inviting many of them to their respective clinics as they teach them their philosophies BUT most important develop a relationship by inviting them to their games and exchanging schedules to scout the talent of their teams.

From what I heard of Mac’s philosophies he will not recruit in LA IF players do not have Hawaii roots or ancestry to the Islands and IF that is still true then RainbowCliff’s backyard will remain full in tack of buckets and sand as Hawaii has no shovel to clear away the massive talented athletes in the South Central LA / SouthBay area as your Mountain West, Pac 10 or Local JC keeps their faces in the door !

To this date I have not talked to NO school official of any schools pertaining their athletes as I have been told I am a violation to represent UH as my status as a booster is all I am to my former Hawaii athletic background.

So gentlemen there you have ALL the info and if UH is serious in recruiting LA then they need to get on it quick as JJ hiring of Eliminian is for his benefit to better SMU as Crenshaw will be top in the City for this HS football season and they have a running back, wide receiver and DB that are “off the charts” and Eliminian will heve his face right there with UCLA and SC recruiting their services and he won’t be looking for them to be Warriors but Mustangs !

Off to work out good folks IF any comments please leave and will get back to you later !

  234. d1島 June 23, 2010 6:06 am

    …everyone else,

    Have a terrific day!

    HiHo….

  236. whitey June 23, 2010 6:35 am

Good morning Tsaikos. With a couple of very good summer courses made for our warriors, it makes me wonder if any of the hawaii recruits are enrolled. All of them could use a session of speech and life lessons.

  237. Garret June 23, 2010 6:42 am

    ST,

Is UH participating again with JJ’s Good Will Mission in Samoa? This Samoa News article doesn’t seem to mention UH participating at all and the past years they were sure to mention that UH coaches would be there. This year the program is focusing on high school students (*cough* recruits *cough*), so it would be good for UH to be there again.

American Samoa can look forward to a great summer as events include this island’s third visit from Southern Methodist University Head Football coach June Jones who arrives in the territory next Thursday night, June 24 to carry out his annual Goodwill Mission which includes a football camp and medical mission.

According to Samoa Bowl Committee’s Peter Gurr, Jones touches down next Thursday with 29 staff members and assistants.

“June Jones is scheduled to land here on island next week Thursday, that’ll be the 24th of June, and he will be on island with 29 of his assistant and staff members, to organize their Good Will Mission,” Gurr explained. “We are guessing that there will be 32 members of this June Jones trip coming down, three of his colleagues are already on island, and they will be holding sessions on Saturday morning for the youth of American Samoa.”

“This year is different from his previous trips,” Gurr pointed out. “The last two years, we have been working with him throughout his program, and we have been mostly focusing on the elementary level and junior high, but this year, our target is the high school students all over the island. Students graduating from elementary going into high school this year are also welcome to attend these sessions.”

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

    Great win for USA!

  240. Diogenes June 23, 2010 8:10 am

    MORNING HAWAII!!!

When PRIDE (#221) speaks, I listen!

What RAINBOWCLIFF (#234) says about recruiting, if true about what Coach MAC says about only recruiting that area for people with Hawaii ties, is short-sighted. That would be akin to saying we only want players that weight X pounds, 6’3 and higher, runs 4.4, has a GPA of 4.0, from Mars or beyond, type “AB” blood etc.

I can see his point about wanting Hawaii ties as a cultural thing, State pride, a reason to stick around etc but if that is his MAJOR criteria, it is wrong.
And I remember Cliff – like I do Marv Vitatoe, Skip Williams Armfelt (wonder where he is now?) George Ritter. And CLIFF, did you check whether you could do some mention of people (recruits) to coaches to something without violation of NCAA rules – I know you cannot hustle them but what I wrong with being a Hawaii Visitors Bureau PR type?

  241. PIPER's SON June 23, 2010 8:14 am

IF we are not part of the Samoan party with JJ, perhaps the coaching staff might consider going down on their own. It may not get the splash and PR that JJ is getting, but at least show face is a good move. Maybe Samoa Samoa can be of some help.

    Great win by USA today.

ssssshhh, need to be quiet as good neighbor ST is still asleep and reason for no new post – he must be tired from chasing all the incoming freshman to secure interviews.

16 years ago, USA was embarrassed with their performance in the World Cup
13 years ago, they started an Olympic Developmental Program where the best 13 year olds
from each state and compete against other states in their region. Our son azngamer808 was one of the first selected for this program and the target was for this age group to get the best of training from US coaches, create regional teams from the states team, and later create a national team from the regional team. This years World Cup is where all this planning years ago is coming full bloom
Nicholas didn’t go beyond the state team, but it was a great experience to compete against the best of each state

According to a former Notre Dame soccer coach that trained Nicholas’ club team for a week,
he said US will never have the individual skills that other countries have because the kids just don’t go outside and think of playing soccer one-on-one like kids do for basketball,
or just throw and catch in football or baseball. The skills to be creative with a soccer ball is not there, just from lack of play.

  268. sjmacro June 23, 2010 10:09 am

Any word on Coach Komeiji’s potential replacement candidates?

An earlier poster said Coach Erickson looked for assistants who were also (also meaning they could also coach) good recruiters. That makes sense. Create a wider geographic base helps.

iPhone 4 or football: the world of hype…

Over the past couple of weeks or more the world has seem a large amount of hype over two things, the FIFA World Cup 2010 and of course the release of the iPhone 4, both taking large amounts of net space in recent days.Probably the biggest and most hype…
