Kekoa – re your texting response in the last blog: My $30 analog phone doesn’t take pictures.since it doesn’t have a camera. It doesn’t have internet capability either which is why once I am gone from my computer, I can only be reached by phone if something needs to be addressed right away rather than waiting for up to 24 hours for a response. Also, I’d have to take out my contact lenses to see anything on that tiny two-inch screen.

Already have tickets for the volleyball and football games so good luck to the rest of you with today’s contest. What I’d really like – but would have to take a full day off in order to play – would be football sideline tickets.

Time to wuz outa here – all-day conference at the Ala Moana Hotel and then a presentation at the Capitol this evening about the floating garbage patch in the North Pacific Ocean.

Ronnie: If ticket pickup/delivery is still needed, we’ll be at the T-Gate for early setup and can deliver them that day. Just let me know one way or t’other.

Chawan – post #37 WINS a date with me. Can’t wait until you come back so that i can “warm” you up.

  44. Garret October 22, 2008 9:19 am

I’ll try to post these articles way before #150 so that I’ll be out of the way when people start trying to win the contests…

Nevada’s D is being “dummied down” due to the problems they have been having.

When a team suffers an injury at quarterback, teams tend to ‘dummy down’ the playbook a bit to make things easier for the replacement.
Nevada coach Chris Ault said Monday that the Pack has ‘dummied down’ its defensive playbook to make it easier on the unit which has been inconsistent across the board this season.
The Pack took some baby steps last week in its 44-17 win over Utah State, registering five sacks and 8 1/2 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Save for a long TD pass late in the game which irked Ault, it might go down as one of the best efforts of the season.
“The defensive front was good, particularly Kevin Basped,” said Ault, whose team is preparing to face Hawaii Saturday night in Honolulu. “Of course, five sacks always helps you. Dontay (Moch) did a nice job of coming off the edge. He did a nice job playing the run. When teams tried to run outside, he was making things happen and running people down.”

Nevada has been having trouble pressuring opposing teams with just four down linemen, and that’s a big reason why the Wolf Pack has had trouble stopping good passing teams like Texas Tech, New Mexico State and Missouri.
“We’re trying to prove that we’re not just the front seven (when you talk about our defense),” Moch said. “Our back four can make plays.”
Ault admitted that the secondary played better than it has, but he also said that Utah State’s offense doesn’t have the explosiveness of a Fresno State, Boise State, Missouri, Texas Tech or New Mexico State.

  45. d1島 October 22, 2008 9:19 am

    btw,
I don’t see the jersey on the list of prizes….

  46. Garret October 22, 2008 9:20 am

Too bad that Nevada’s D played a running QB in the last game. That means that they worked on schemes to contain the QB and got some game reps with it.

In Hawaii, Nevada will face a team similar to Utah State in the sense that the Warriors boast a running quarterback in Inoke Funaki. A week ago, Nevada faced the shifty Diondre Borel.
“They are trying to run a little more,” Wilson said. “They are still doing the run and shoot. When he rolls out, you have to respect the run more than you did with Colt (Brennan). It adds another dimension.
“They lost their quarterback, all their receivers and three offensive linemen. It takes time to come together. They have been playing better offensively.”

  47. Garret October 22, 2008 9:23 am

The Idaho Statesman has an article about the UH-Nevada game. Nevada will be a good test for UH’s D, since they scored at least 45 points in 4 straight games.

Sitting in third place in the Western Athletic Conference standings, the Nevada Wolf Pack makes the long trip to Aloha Stadium this weekend for a Saturday night bout against the Hawaii Warriors. Trailing only San Jose State and Boise State who have yet to fall in league play, the Pack is shooting for a second straight win and the fourth in the last five outings this weekend. Last Saturday, the team scored at least 45 points for the fourth straight game with a 44-17 defeat of Utah State at Mackay Stadium in Reno.

Trying to follow up his WAC Freshman of the Year performance from 2007, Kaepernick is making a strong push to be considered one of the contenders for the Offensive Player of the Year in the WAC this time around. The fleet-footed signal-caller is second on the team with his 613 yards rushing, is averaging an incredible eight and a half yards per attempt and already has 11 TDs on the ground. Additionally, the QB is completing 62.5 percent of his pass attempts in the pistol offense and has another 10 TDs, against just four interceptions. Not to be forgotten is Taua who leads the team with 736 yards and has nine TDs of his own as the top- ranked running back in the WAC this week. As a team, the Pack is second in the nation with 305.3 ypg rushing.

  48. Garret October 22, 2008 9:23 am

Nevada is 1st in the WAC and 5th in the country in tackles for loss…but they have a bad pass D that UH can hopefully exploit.

Dontay Moch, who tied for second on Nevada with his six tackles, made three of them behind the line of scrimmage, tallied a pair of sacks and forced a fumble. With an average of 0.8 sacks per game, Moch is second in the conference at the moment, not to mention tied for third in the WAC with his 1.14 TFLs per outing. Because of the efforts of Moch, Nevada is first in the conference and fifth in the nation in TFLs with almost eight and a half per game and is 11th nationally with three sacks per outing as well. Unfortunately, the squad is having some serious trouble with its pass defense, permitting opponents to register a hefty 333 ypg to rank last in all of college football, which makes it easy to see how the Pack now ranks sixth in the Western Athletic and 102nd in the country with 31.9 ppg allowed.

  49. Garret October 22, 2008 9:25 am

The conclusion of the article is bulletin board material for the Warriors.

There’s no question the offense for the Wolf Pack is going to produce this weekend, so it is really just a matter of how many points the Warriors are going to lose by on their home turf.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Nevada 42, Hawaii 21

Discussion thread on CBSSports.com about why Tyler isn’t starting.

  51. Garret October 22, 2008 9:29 am

Interesting that Bess never returned kickoffs in high school or college but was a starting kick returner in the NFL. Too bad Ginn has the job now, though in my opinion Bess is better suited for the punt returner and slot receiver spots anyway.

The Dolphins’ returns get started, but don’t last long. Rookie Davone Bess, who didn’t return kickoffs in high school or college, did both until the Dolphins’ coaches gave Ginn the kickoff job last Sunday. After Ginn muffed the opening kickoff, then returned it 31 yards and returned another kickoff 27 yards, Baltimore went with pooch kickoffs. With their No. 1-ranked defense, the Ravens preferred giving up a few yards of field position to the threat of Ginn giving the Dolphins easy points.

”He pushes me to be better and I push him to be better,” Bess said, a claim backed up by the sight of Ginn standing down the sideline away from most of the team to yell encouragement at Bess before many punts.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano loves to say that Bess often “makes the first guy miss.”

Bess often does, but he doesn’t do it in the way, of, say, Rick Upchurch, the NFL record-setter whose skill at that made him responsible for more queasy coaching stomachs than any other 1970s punt returner. Upchurch’s nimble dodges created lanes he always seemed a breath from hitting. The thickset Bess just gets overrun. Since Bess’ lone return in the season opener, a 25-yarder, he’s had seven returns for 66 yards, or a 9.4 average.

”I feel we have great preparation for it,” Bess said of the punt return unit. “Now, we’ve just got to bring what we’re taught in practice to the game.”

  52. Garret October 22, 2008 9:32 am

Article that mentions RGM. Looks like Clement went down with an injury, his backup Jackson got his spot, and RGM got Jackson’s spot. Since Clement’s injury seems serious, RGM should be getting an extended amount of time to play.

Last week for example, Jason Clermont went down with his MCL strain and his replacement, Paris Jackson, is barely noticed. Jackson knew his assignments for the most part, and played a huge role at a different position for the Lions in Edmonton Friday.

Ryan Grice-Mullen got Jackson’s spot in the offence and drew the most attention naturally because he is new. But it was Jackson’s ability to adapt which meant the most. He fit the system.

Looks like Jackson will get more time in his new role too.

Sure enough, Clermont was nowhere to be seen Tuesday and there was nobody around the club willing to refute the suggestion their former top Canadian slotback won’t be gone until the start of the playoffs at the absolute earliest.

  56. Garret October 22, 2008 9:38 am

Looks like the Pac-10 schedules much more aggressively in their nonconference games than the other BCS conferences.

Washington is the only winless BCS conference team and has become a national punchline. Coach Tyrone Willingham is about as fired as a coach can be while still coaching his team.

But I wonder where the Huskies would be if they started the season playing Eastern Washington — a rivalry game, right! — Nevada, SMU and Massachusetts.

    Actually I don’t wonder.

The Huskies would have started 4-0, just like the team that actually had that schedule, No. 8 Texas Tech.

Instead, the Huskies have played a schedule ranked as the nation’s toughest by the Sagarin Ratings. Instead of I-AA foes, they played BYU and Oklahoma and have Notre Dame coming to town Saturday.

    Scheduling matters.

And it’s become clear that teams are not penalized for scheduling weak opponents in order to pad their record, nor do teams — or conferences — get credit for ambitious scheduling.

Texas Tech’s schedule is ranked 103rd toughest in the nation by the Sagarin Ratings. That terrible slate distracts from No. 6 Oklahoma State, which has played a schedule ranked 87th in the nation.

Six Big 12 teams play schedules ranked 50 or worse. Nebraska’s 19th-ranked schedule is the toughest in the conference.

    The Pac-10 features schedules ranked 1, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 13. Only two are ranked 50 or worse.

Two SEC teams have played schedules ranked in the top-20, while six are ranked 50 or worse.

But this isn’t to pick on teams that schedule pansies or to question the orthodoxy of Big 12 and SEC dominance.

  57. Kekoa October 22, 2008 9:39 am

W/Doc ~ If you don’t even have a phone with the capability, why are you worrying about not knowing how to send text messages?

Those who do, and Garret produced the overwhelming numbers that do…are quite comfortable with it. The phones are not that expensive these days, and neither are the service plans.

For the important work that you do around the capitol, this would be the handiest tool you could have. Think of the uses I outlined in my last post. There are many more a smart Lobby Lady like yourself could come up with I’m sure.

Come T-gate, I show to you.

  58. Garret October 22, 2008 9:39 am

I hope that the Pac-10 ignores the advice from ESPN…or JD’s scheduling job will be much, much harder now.

It’s about one thing: Reducing the risk of losing as much as possible and then hoping a couple of good conference victories will be enough to fool, er, win over poll voters.

Therefore, the Pac-10 needs to stop: 1. scheduling tough nonconference opponents; and, 2. it absolutely shouldn’t play nonconference games on the road.

The Pac-10 should adopt the philosophy of many teams presently ranked in the top-25: If you’re good, we won’t play you because you might beat us. And if you pass the badness test, you’ve got to come to our house.

(USC should continue to schedule all-comers with the guts to play because no team outside of the Pac-10 can beat USC. Or at least one hasn’t in the regular season since September of 2002).

  59. Garret October 22, 2008 9:40 am

The Pac-10 philosophy has been wrong.

No more Georgias or Penn States or TCUs or Oklahomas or Boise States.

Bring on the MAC or Conference USA or the directional schools.

    That’s how a team — and a conference — gains national esteem.

Wow- I got an interesting piece of advertising this morning- and immediately applied it to the Warriors – Coaches and Players!

“The most important leaders in organizations are the leaders closest to us

The foundation of leadership has remained the same for the last 25 years, and it´s not likely to change for the next 25 years

    Leadership is personal

Leaders must be forward-looking, but it´s not the leader´s vision that matters most

The best leaders are the best learners, and most leaders don´t do the one thing that helps them learn best

Leadership is a relationship, and leaders should want to be liked

Talent is highly overrated; it´s practice that develops mastery

There is no “silver bullet”—no one thing that leaders can do to make dramatic improvements in their performance

Leadership is in the moment; it´s what you do every three minutes that counts the most ”

    GO WARRIORS!

  64. Kekoa October 22, 2008 9:53 am

Call the Coach caller (He sounded like he was the original “Rolling Cooler-Cooler Rolling Guy”)…suggested the team do the Ha’a when they came back out at half-time. Coach said he would take it to the team captains to decide, but sounded very agreeable to the suggestion.

I know we have all seen the team kinda drag okole out after the half, so this might be a way of getting them ‘pumped.’ Hey! It’s either that or we all follow Kazz over the wall, rush the visiting bench and do the Tsaiko version of the Ha’a! (…not saying it would be pretty).

I wonder where the visitor’s section for NMSU is? I was planning on buying my tickets for that game on gameday, just getting there a couple hours early.

    Not 150 yet….quick, we need more posts….

  77. homey π October 22, 2008 10:23 am

Yeah I know the Boise game is over and we have moved on but I find it hard to believe that the Warriors had no sacks against a youthful Boise o-line.

    Okay, move on…

    I wanna win the poster!

  78. (Jesse) James October 22, 2008 10:23 am

Homey…I think we should ask ST to try to get the Rainbow Dancers out to the T-gate…that would be awesome….or at least to our next Blog Bash….whenever that may be….

  79. Kekoa October 22, 2008 10:25 am

Homes ~ I’ll bring mines one to da t-gate so you may admire it from a safe distance. The poster is signed by all of the ladies of the Rainbow. Even XLiz has one!…Tell ST you are in serious need of one!

  80. homey π October 22, 2008 10:27 am

  83. Committed Road Warrior October 22, 2008 10:31 am

Texas Tech has been having issues with their kickers missing PATs and half of their FG attempts….

So a fan who kicked a 30-yard field goal at the UMass-Texas Tech game to win a month’s worth of rent may be called upon by the Red Raiders to be its kicker for this weekend’s game against #18 Kansas.

Texas Tech’s situation at place-kicker has evolved from a concern to a source of frustration. Now, it seems as if it has taken an unexpected, crazy twist.

Having already gone through two kickers – who have combined to miss six PATs and half of their field-goal attempts – the sixth-ranked Red Raiders are now seriously considering giving Matt Williams a shot against No. 18 Kansas this weekend.

Williams is a Tarleton State transfer student who won a month of free rent at the Tech/UMass game several weeks ago by kicking a 30-yard field goal. After his successful try, Williams was walking back to his seat when he was flagged down.

“They relayed a message to me saying that Coach [Mike] Leach wanted to talk to me,” Williams told RedRaiderSports.com the next day. “He told me to come into his office on Tuesday and talk to him, and then Coach [Clay] McGuire told me to come and speak with him on Monday.”

Initially, it was thought that Williams was ineligible this season due to transfer rules. However, according to McGuire – who heads up the Red Raiders’ special teams unit, Williams has been cleared to play.

“That is the way I understand it, yeah,” confirmed McGuire on Tuesday. “He’s got a real good shot. Only Mike Leach could bring a guy out of the stands and make it work.”

What Williams offers, compared to Donnie Carona and Cory Fowler, is something that is absolutely necessary for PATs: trajectory.

“I’ve seen that guy try one kick,” added Leach. “But the difference between his and the others is that they barely got off the ground. His got up right away.”

    CRW,

That could be called “Tua-proofing” your kicking game 😉

  86. 99club October 22, 2008 10:36 am

    CRW-

Two years ago there was plenty of parking but I can’t remember if it was free or not. As for seating, we sat in section E on the visitors side. Click on my name for the link to the stadium map. I ordered tickets by phone and picked them up at the will call window but really didn’t need to since it wasn’t that crowded. They’re only $11.50 for military.

  87. d1島 October 22, 2008 10:36 am

    Is practice over yet?

  88. midori7 October 22, 2008 10:38 am

fyi, the white Nike jersey will be the prize of the contest announced tomorrow…

see you at the tailgate? still have the prize you won the week of the La Tech game.

  89. LizKauai [Believer] October 22, 2008 10:40 am

CRW- you certainly are committed! Way to go!!! and Go! and Go!

The TT kicker story is pretty amazing when you think about it. Nothing like open tryouts for the team!

    Another post closer to 150

    Whoosh!

At least you would be with other Warrior fans – and could make the section louder! 99club, how many are going with you?

  94. Kekoa October 22, 2008 10:45 am

Rainbow Dancers! Oh Yeah! I’ve found them to be a very high spirited group of young women who would prolly love the idea of coming to our Bash! I’ll see to it personally!…Homes, would you care to assist?

James ~ We are considering Saturday, the 18th of July as a primary date for the Bash. (25th as the back-up). We want to lock in a spot first and get it financed as we had planned. Then we can let the off islanders know way ahead of time so they can plan vacation time and Air trans/etc.

Lots of lessons learned to make things even better this year. We will post info as we move along. Always open to more suggestions tho. If you would like to join our Special Ops crew and help plan this rascal, see me, BG, Stretch, Koakane or Wreck.

  96. homey π October 22, 2008 10:48 am

Anyone know what the average YAC is for the Warriors? Curious to know since a household member pointed out that they don’t run far after they catch the ball…and then went on to say they don’t run far after they rush the ball. 🙄

  97. 99club October 22, 2008 10:49 am

    Ronnie-

Looks like just me. My youngest boy has a school play that he’ll be prep’ing for that Saturday. He’s my good luck charm. Hawaii has never lost a game he’s been at: BYU, SJSU (twice), NMSU.

  101. da princess' classmate October 22, 2008 10:54 am

wow, never knew tt’s kicking situation was so dire. makes you appreciate what we got here even more. interesting to see tt is a dog too. could see tt go down this week and then take out da horns next week. very interesting in the big12.

and now romo’s out til mid november. bad things going on in big D. might as well try out brooks bollinger, think he might be better than brad johnson. they could seriously be under 500 coming out of the bye, not good in the nfc east…

good to see pollard and lofton gonna get a chance to show what they got. any reason we’re not seeing mouton as a pr. is that problem a blocking situation as well like the kick returns…

  102. Ronnie October 22, 2008 10:54 am

99club – it would be more money, but may be more fun to sit in the Hawai’i section. And the cheerleaders are outstanding!

I have a dilemma… I can go to the Utah St, NMSU, and last home game OR I can take my boys to the last home game.

  103. 99club October 22, 2008 10:55 am

Have you ordered your tickets for this game yet? Section E doesn’t look that bad. NMSU tickets are pretty cheap (relatively speaking) so even getting the best seats in Aggie Memorial Stadium won’t cost more than $18! Try getting that at Aloha Stadium!

    Liz,
    Thanks for the compliments!

    Ronnie,
Thanks for the link. I was looking for it. Don’t know if I’ll still be able to grab some off of the allotment, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

  194. Garret October 22, 2008 11:45 am

Article about high school athletes going through the recruiting process. I wonder if Notre Dame knows that an inmate is trying to help recruit football players for them?

In Northern Nevada, players like McQueen’s Kyle Van Noy and Karrington Armstrong and Hug’s Courtney Gardner and Duke Williams are the most sought after players and face the myriad pressures today’s recruiting brings.

These four have received hundreds — if not thousands — of correspondence from schools pleading for their commitment.

“It gets kind of stressful sometimes,” said Van Noy, the area’s top recruit who has whittled 10 scholarship offers down to his top five. “Last spring I got six calls in a row one day. It’s nice, but you’re also stressed. More piles on you and you start thinking about it more.”

The college coaches are always calling, as are newspaper reporters and writers for recruiting Web sites like Rivals.com and Scout.com. Then there is the “advice” from teammates or other peers.

A couple recruits in Arizona — including Devon Kennard, son of former Wolf Pack player Derek Kennard — received multi-page letters from an inmate in the California State Penitentiary system urging them to choose Notre Dame.

  195. Garret October 22, 2008 11:46 am

Note about why college coaches continue to recruit players even after they committed to another school.

Since Gardner and Williams verbally committed to Nevada in the summer, some of that has ceased. But there are still multiple schools out there trying to change their minds. The same goes for Armstrong, who committed to Oregon a few weeks back.

“That still hasn’t stopped the coaches from all over the country from contacting me and contacting them,” Hug coach Rollins Stallworth said. “The signing date is still so far away that a lot is going to happen between now and then.”

College coaches know that nearly one-third of kids that commit early do in fact change their decision.

  203. Ronnie October 22, 2008 11:55 am

curveball, I left a message for him last night and didn’t hear back. I just sent him a text – let’s see if he responds. Otherwise, maybe WassupDoc can bring them to you at the t-gate. Are you going to the t-gate?

  204. Mrs. A-House October 22, 2008 11:57 am

    LilMermaid –

Wow, you got up close and personal with Kealoha Pilares!? Luckyeeee!

I haven’t been as fortunate. His gorgeous eyes are clearly evident even through the face guard of his helmet (on tv) after he completes an awesome running gain. I first noticed them when he was interviewed after practice one day.

Heal quickly, Kealoha…we need you…but be sure you are 100% ok before you hit the field again.

  210. Mrs. A-House October 22, 2008 12:01 pm

We were able to get up close and personal with the Rainbow Dancers at the Aiea Elementary School Na Koa parking lot. They set up their tent and were selling their autographed posters. Let me tell you guyz, show up and be dazzled by these lovely young ladies. Each of them wears false eyelashes, BUT that is part of the “show-biz” make-up required to look their most fabulous when they perform. They are also very accommodating when asked to have pictures taken with them and of them. Their calendars will on sale very soon…maybe in November?

  211. 99club October 22, 2008 12:04 pm

Good thing none of the players read this blog so they don’t see Lilmermaid and Mrs. A-house’s postings about Mr. Pilares.

  212. LilMermaid October 22, 2008 12:07 pm

Mrs. A-House, I wish I got up close & personal w/ him! Nah, I was with my hubby & two screaming keikis so it wasn’t a good time to stop & talk stories. He is gorgeous fo sho! Get better soon Kealoha!

  215. SteveM October 22, 2008 12:10 pm

    Good noon everyone!

Just finished up the initial TSAI-KO CRUISERS web page with data supplied from the known ocean cruisers… like Garret, Long Time UH Fan, Tom Mui, myki & sj-macro, etc.

The first section shows the reported planned cruises. If you are thinking of a cruise in the same region and time period, maybe this will influence you 🙂

The second section is a reference table listing most cruise regions and who has been to what ports. Need tips and want to know who’s been to Skagway or Tasmania?… do a “find” with your web browser at

    http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/cruisers.html

This gets even more interesting as people add their experiences and future cruise plans. So, please share your past cruise info (ship and ports visited) and definite future cruise plan (ship and departure date). email me at stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

Time to start Tsai-ko piling on the HA SERVER…WOOHOO!

  217. Mrs. A-House October 22, 2008 12:13 pm

    Koa-Mahu –

Why are you ignoring me?? Please acknowledge my attempts to help you. I sent you some advice a while ago on how to elevate yourself from Drag Princess to Drag Queen. Obviously, if you are content to post on this blog and not go the next step and enter the Drag Queen contest in New York City, then you need this advice…

    1. Let good thoughts be your sword and shield…
    2. Ignore adversity…
    3. Abide by the rules of love…
    4. Stand up and be recognized, others’ approval not needed, imagine good things and believe in yourself…

That adds up to quit hitting on really nice guys like Jason and Chawan_cut. I want to be your friend…I want to take a picture with you…and I want you to sign my book… 😛

  218. Ronnie October 22, 2008 12:14 pm

Hi Liz! Yes, I still have Ukuleleboi’s ticket 😀

Hey but wait a minute….the big one is at 300

  262. Kekoa October 22, 2008 12:25 pm

Ronnie ~ Ask our favorite Pauoa Marine (not Gomer Pyle) to find something very physical that the boys can do while you are vacationing in the South Pacific.

I’m quite sure that by Marine standards he will require them to carry, push, pull, throw, paint and then salute, a well chosen item of interest.

Might I suggest da slippah as the ultimate motivating factor. It should be applied as directed to the lower bottom of the Okole with short, heavy-handed strokes. Yelling and screaming at the top of ones lungs while delivering each blow will normally stimulate the desired results.

For example: (Whack!…I…Whack!…told…Whack!…you….Whack!…to…final Whack!…get on dat plane!

  263. Stretch October 22, 2008 12:25 pm

Sorry, I can’t go to the game, just trying to see how lucky I am. How about 275 instead, halfway between 250 and the next prize at 300.

    yes!

  265. Mrs. A-House October 22, 2008 12:26 pm

    Hi LizK –

The jersey bears the #96 and is the “away” white…perfect to wear to game if/when Coach Mack requests fans to “wear white”. Good luck!

  266. djmitcho October 22, 2008 12:27 pm

It’s cold here. The wind is blowing like a mother as Coach Mack would say.

  283. 99club October 22, 2008 12:31 pm

Just constructively adding to the count…

    Margarita Presidente
1 ¼ oz Sauza Conmemoritivo tequila anejo
    ½ oz Cointreau liqueur
    ½ oz Presidente brandy
4 ounces (1/2 cup) sweet & sour mix
    Spash Rose’s lime juice

    1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice. Shake.
    2. Pour drink into a martini glass rimmed with salt. Add a lime wedge and serve with the remainder of the drink in the shaker on the side. Serves 1.

  284. Ronnie October 22, 2008 12:31 pm

I think the blog postings are being handled by state entities. Whereby our posts are organized by IP#s and then a delegation of nominated officials determine the committee in which the posts are applied to the blog server. Once that is done the post must be approved by another committee. The members of the final approving body are then allowed to be in the next committee to approve the next post.

    😆

    Kazz –

I viewed Colt’s “karaoke hazing” and to tell you the truth, I couldn’t tell that he was “singing” a song. So cute to watch him, though. That’s my boy…he’s such a good sport to take the razing like that for the team.

Oh Mrs. A-House, I think you missed the extended version of the video in which Todd Collins says he could do better, to which Colt replied, “singing or on the field?”… then the entire team replied, “SINGING”. mwhahahahahahahahaha!!!

    Nah just kidding. 😉

Betty and I got back to the Islands yesterday before noon, and are seriously jet-lagged today. I managed to find my way to my parking spot at work, but couldn’t remember what floor I worked on when I got in the elevator!!! Also forgot the password to get into the comuter system! Auwe!

Thankfully, we have a few days to recover before making it to the T-Gate. So good to be back!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Why wait till UH gets a win against Nevada to buy Hawaii Bowl tickets? Hawaii football fans should attend no matter who is playing. Support your local bowl game, or you might see it disappear like the Aloha/Oahu bowls.

nah no need wait to buy hawaii bowl tix, went to last year’s coming out party for chris johnson, his 4.2 speed is legit. WOW…

nah maybe you better wait, don’t wanna have tosee nmsu vs some team not from the pac-10, lol, forgot that da pac-10 might not qualify enough teams.

  352. da princess' classmate October 22, 2008 1:08 pm

then again #347 might be right, if we don’t support then the bowl might go byebye

and if that’s two years of not so good support, then there’s a lot of pressure next year to fulfill that bowl attendance requirement…

What’s messed up is I am not a picky eater at all… except for breakfast. I guess it’s because I usually do not eat breakfast unless I go out to do so, or it’s between the hours of 1am and 5am and I am sitting in my car at the drive thru at Jack In The Box.

But that sounds good though. I’ll keep that in mind.

d1 – $2.899 a gallon! I went this morning at 6:30 and there was no waiting! I’m thinking of putting in an underground tank and store around 5,000 gallons of gas.

Haha. I know where homey lives. Now I know where to go for gas. 😆

  443. Calvin from Kona October 22, 2008 2:17 pm

  446. Calvin from Kona October 22, 2008 2:18 pm

If I win the tickets I’m going to have a sub-contest to give them to someone else.

  447. LilMermaid October 22, 2008 2:18 pm

    Hi again!

I’ll be very jealous of whoever wins the football tickets.

  448. d1島 October 22, 2008 2:18 pm

    I’m not senile yet.

Me neither! But then, how would we know?

  449. LizKauai [Believer] October 22, 2008 2:18 pm

wena- the blog server starts batching posts when it gets busy and dumps a whole bunch on at once after a short pause…
Drives us all nuts during a contest… and I can’t even imagine how the techs feel!

  450. jojo ® October 22, 2008 2:18 pm

What’s happening on the 2009 recruiting trail?

It has suddenly gone cold ( no news ), but hopefully the coaches and our many “eagle-eyed” Tsaikos are on the job scouring the hills, valleys, oceans, rivers, dales, trenches, trees, lil and big mountains, etc – what the heck am I saying – “oceans, rivers” – neva know what’s going on!!!

I really and truly hope that the big time BCS coaches are putting down Hawaii to any local recruit so maybe they will say to them selves, “hey, coach is putting down my “home” and conclude,” that’s it, I am going to play for the Warriors!!!”

Reminds me of what Michael Carter was saying today on Lunch. (Best radio show name ever.) He said, back when he was playing, people would come up to him and ask what was going on, stuff like that, cause he was the QB of the team. He says now, nearly 20 years later, people still recognize him, and come up to him and say, “You were the best option QB UH ever had, how come you’re not coaching?” He said long-term, now that he’s had all this time to reflect, he really appreciates being able to play at home and become so well-known here even many years later.

4 feet? Haha, when I was little, I had one of those, but I propped it up to 5 feet (wanted to go higher, but our ceiling is 8 feet, and I was already starting to scrape some of the white stuff off every time I hit it). I was the master, I could hit any shot in the living room up to 20 feet. Broke the backboard so many times throwing down slam dunks that my Dad replaced the plastic backboard with one he made out of wood.

    Hi Mrs. A-House!!!

Since I am the only one that passed your test, or the only one who reads your posts does that make me your favorite?

Try “gastronomic” as opposed to gestational.

Did you have to do CPR on Mr. A-House? Is he up off the floor? Heck, is he breathing? I bet Midori7 was really excited — okay, probably a state of shock — for a while.

We sports fans have been accused of being superstitious.

As fans there is not much we can do to help with the result of the game. We wear the same clothes, we repeat rituals that previously preceeded victories and we cease rituals that previously preceeded losses.

We must go forth with no fear and with the faith that our Warriors will win the day.

Prohibit the taking of omens, and do away with superstitious doubts. Then, until death itself comes, no calamity need be feared.

The LA Times has a mention of the BSU-SJSU game.

Boise State (6-0) needs a win to keep pace with No. 14 Utah in the battle for a possible Bowl Championship Series berth, but it might not be as easy as it sounds. San Jose State (5-2) actually leads the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-0 league record. San Jose State is giving up only 16.6 points per game and last week had six sacks and forced four turnovers in a 31-14 win at New Mexico State. Facts are facts, though, and San Jose State, in eight tries, has never defeated Boise State.

    The pick: Boise State.

  696. Garret October 22, 2008 8:21 pm

Looks like Reggie Bush wants to pay off the person suing him and keep all testimony away from the NCAA.

The new attorney for Reggie Bush said Wednesday that the former USC tailback hopes to settle a long and contentious civil lawsuit filed against him by would-be sports marketer Lloyd Lake.

An out-of-court settlement could affect NCAA investigators who want to know whether Bush received cash and gifts from Lake and his former partner, Michael Michaels, while in college.

If proved, such improper benefits would be a violation and USC could have to forfeit past victories.

But if the case is settled before a trial or even pretrial depositions, investigators won’t have potentially valuable evidence resulting from sworn testimony.

  697. Garret October 22, 2008 8:23 pm

I know that UH had a *really* hard time beating BYU, I sat through game after frustrating game at Aloha Stadium. However, at least UH broke through and never had the type of mental block that Oklahoma State has with Texas.

Worse yet, they have come unglued, and by the end, Texas has handed it to them.

Up 16-7 at home in 2003. Gave up 48 unanswered points.

Up 35-7 in the second quarter in Austin in 2004. Got outscored 49-0.

Up 28-9 in Stillwater against the eventual 2005 national champions? Vince Young finished with 267 rushing yards as Texas ran off 48 straight points.

And last season, the Cowboys led the Horns 35-14 entering the fourth quarter. Um, lost that one, too, 38-35.

  698. Garret October 22, 2008 8:26 pm

I know a couple of people here (including 99club) were discussing how Colt McCoy would go to the NFL after this season…but I predict he’ll be like UH’s Colt and return for his senior year.

As for the “when,” the Texas junior quarterback — a favorite to win the 2008 Heisman Trophy — made that clear this week, telling Sporting News, “I’m going to play here for four years.”

“I’ve been blessed to be able to play here,” McCoy said. “Not very many people get to (start) here for four years, so what an opportunity.”

  699. curveball October 22, 2008 8:26 pm

Garret:—San Jose State, in eight tries, has never defeated Boise State.

I think it is time for that to change…do not like them, but I am for them

  700. Garret October 22, 2008 8:27 pm

Interesting that NFL coaches are telling Texas that Colt McCoy won’t be downgraded because he’s in the shotgun just about all the time in college. Wasn’t that a big criticism of Colt Brennan?

McCoy believes he is on a natural path to the NFL, despite having played out of the shotgun in a spread formation the majority of his time in college.

“Every spring, (offensive coordinator Greg) Davis visits with a lot of NFL coaches. A lot of NFL coaches come in, we get their schemes, we get their concepts, we get the things that they do. Our offense basically is a lot of the things that different teams do based out of the shotgun.”

  701. Garret October 22, 2008 8:29 pm

    curveball,

I would love for SJSU to beat BSU! I know that could cost UH some cut of the BCS money, but I would love for Coach Tomey to win the WAC since UH cannot.

  702. Garret October 22, 2008 8:31 pm

Frank Gansz had an amazing impact on NFL (and therefore NCAA) special teams play. I’m glad that he was able to coach for a period of time for UH.

The Chiefs went to Pittsburgh on the final day of the season needing to defeat the Steelers to gain a 10th victory and clinch a playoff spot. Kansas City brought to Pittsburgh the NFL’s worst offense – a challenge heightened by the fact the Chiefs had to play backup quarterback Todd Blackledge against the Steelers because of an injury to starter Bill Kenney.

Frank Gansz taught me the value of special teams that day.

The Chiefs managed only eight first downs and 96 yards of offense but won 24-19 by scoring all of their points on special teams. Gansz’s crew returned a kickoff for a touchdown and also scored TDs on returns of both a blocked field goal and a blocked punt. Nick Lowery added a field goal.

It was very likely the greatest game ever played by an NFL special teams unit. That game prompted Steelers Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll to hire his first special-teams coach in 1987.

He produced Pro Bowl punters, kickers and kick returners. His Chiefs blocked 12 kicks in 1986 and Gansz won a Super Bowl ring as special teams coach of the St. Louis Rams in 1999.

Gansz wasn’t the NFL’s first special teams coach. That honor belongs to Dick Vermeil. But I’d argue Gansz was the best.

Gotta get a shout out to that Main Man, Mr. A-House, before this jet-lag takes me down for the count tonight.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A TRUE-TO-THE-END FAN(ATIC) OF THE WARRIORS…MISTAH A-HOUSE!!!!

  704. Garret October 22, 2008 8:37 pm

Frank Gansz has been doing an *amazing* job at SMU. They don’t have the talent that so many other teams do, but they are covering kicks and returning kicks well, even pulling off fake punts, etc. JJ knew that his players weren’t going to be able to win the other phases all the time this season (their D was horrible last season is really bad now and their offense is learning the system while playing a ton of freshman and sophomores), but they spent 20-30 minutes each Spring Practice and a fair amount of time in the Fall on special teams…

For 37 years, Gansz has been a coach at the pro and college level and is regarded in football circles as the greatest special teams coach ever. Instead of viewing special teams as an afterthought, Gansz sees the area as a playmaking opportunity for all to benefit.

Big plays for the unit have been plentiful as SMU has scored off a special teams turnover in five of the eight games this season.

  707. Garret October 22, 2008 8:47 pm

I got inspired and looked up some special teams stats…we almost never discuss this. Talent, especially depth, matters on special teams just like the other two phases…but in my opinion, coaching shows up more on special teams than in either of the two phases. I hope that the changes being made this week make a difference here, as UH needs to win the special teams battle vs. Nevada!

    Punt Returns

    8. NMSU, 17 yards per return
    12. La Tech, 15.45 yards per return
    53. Fresno State, 9.92 yards per return
    66. Idaho, 8.8 yards per return
    80. SJSU, 6.89 yards per return
    82. BSU, 6.75 yards per return
    82. Nevada, 6.75 yards per return
    88. Utah State, 6.43 yards per return
    116. SMU, 3.9 yards per return
    120. Hawaii, -0.33 yards per return

  710. Garret October 22, 2008 8:54 pm

After looking at this stat, I actually don’t know if it means anything. A good return could lead to pooch kicking (like UH did vs. Weber State), which would reduce the return yardage.

    Kickoff returns

    9. Fresno State, 25.6 yards per return
    14. SJSU, 24.95 yards per return
    87. Nevada, 20.07 yards per return
    95. NMSU, 19.63 yards per return
    96. SMU, 19.62 yards per return
    102. Idaho, 19.31 yards per return
    104. BSU, 19.20 yards per return
    106. Hawaii, 18.95 yards per return
    114. Utah State, 18.04 yards per return

  713. Garret October 22, 2008 9:00 pm

Since I’m curious, I’ll look up more stats.

    Opponent Punt Returns

    5. La Tech, 2.81 yards per return
    23. SJSU, 4.89 yard per return
    41. Utah State, 6.42 yards per return
    44. BSU, 6.5 yards per return
    72. Fresno State, 9.38 yards per return
    77. NMSU, 9.92 yards per return
    87. Nevada, 11.62 yards per return
    91. SMU, 12.71 yards per return
    95. Hawaii, 13.31 yards per return
    97. Idaho, 13.71 yards per return

  716. Garret October 22, 2008 9:06 pm

I’m impressed with La Tech being #5 in the country at both punt and kickoff coverage.

    Opponent Kickoff Returns

    5. La Tech, 17.0 yards per return
    16. SJSU, 17.96 yards per return
    41. BSU, 19.75 yards per return
    63. SMU, 21.03 yards per return
    85. Utah State, 22.72 yards per return
    99. Hawaii, 23.5 yards per return
    106. Fresno State, 24.28 yards per return
    107. NMSU, 24.41 yards per return
    108. Nevada, 24.69 yards per return
    115. Idaho, 26.7 yards per return

  717. FloridaTed October 22, 2008 9:07 pm

    Garret,

I think our stats on ST’s have been somewhat scewered because of the really bad games against Forida and OSU. I think we have quite a bit of improvement there since then and are still getting better, hopefully.

  718. Garret October 22, 2008 9:08 pm

Last year UH was #20 in the country in punt returns with a 12.44 yard per return average…though I remember Bess driving me crazy with how many times he let the ball drop during the first 1/2 of the season.

  719. Garret October 22, 2008 9:11 pm

    FloridaTed,

I hope that you are correct. I know that one of the biggest plays of the season for UH was Mouton’s kickoff return for a TD against Fresno State. The coaches came up with the 1-returner scheme and it caught Fresno State by surprise, and that was an amazing job by the coaches that might have been the difference in the game!

Trouble is, BSU adjusted to the change and really shut down Mouton and the whole kickoff return unit, and UH had no counter-adjustment. Hopefully the changes being made will make a difference vs. Nevada!

  720. Garret October 22, 2008 9:13 pm

    FloridaTed,

Throw out all the games that UH played against ranked teams…and UH has a punt return average of 0.44, which I think would still be the worst in the country.

  721. Garret October 22, 2008 9:15 pm

    FloridaTed,

I looked it up–in UH’s first 4 games (which included the Florida and Oregon State games), they have a punt return average of 0.0. In October (Fresno State, La Tech, BSU), UH has a punt return average of -0.67! No wonder Mac wants to make changes!

So, things were actually better for the stats earlier in the season!

  722. FloridaTed October 22, 2008 9:18 pm

    Garret,

Agreed, bur they are showing more and more flashes and that is my hope that they will improve. We sure could use it against Nevada,

  725. Garret October 22, 2008 9:32 pm

I shouldn’t dwell on this, so I’ll just say one more thing and put this behind me. If UH is going to rely on the D and play conservatively on offense at times (like at the end of the first half), then the field position battle is important. If UH opponents are getting 13.31 yards per return on punts and UH is getting -0.33 yards per turn on punts, then exchanging punts gives about 14 yards to the other team.

Every successful defensive-oriented coach and team that I’ve seen has *also* had solid special teams. I’m glad that Mac and the rest of the coaches are changing things up now, and hope that things get better soon.

I know that the Warriors give it their all on special teams, literally sacrificing their bodies to cover kickoffs and block for returns. However, something is obviously missing and hopefully they will figure that out soon.

One thing that hasn’t shown up in the stats is the fumbles that the cover units have caused lately. Those have been very, very important and are huge plays. Turnovers on special teams are game changes, just as important or even more important (for momentum) than turnovers on offense.

  726. Jason October 22, 2008 9:32 pm

Wow, it actually shows up now. 😀

Garret: I agree. And I’m not going to name names or throw anybody under the bus, but some players need to play with heart and discipline. And if they aren’t going to do that, then we need to put in players who are willing to play with heart and discipline.

Someone asked Coach Aranda the other day what unit on the team he thought was the best. After a moment to think it over, he said all of them. All eleven on the field have to work together to make a play work. Aranda mentioned one play against Boise State when he thought they were going to get a sack. The blitzers hit their gaps at the right time, and they were about to get him … but one of the defensive linemen was not playing his assignment, so that allowed Moore to scramble for good yardage. From sack to to a significant gain, all because of one player not being disciplined. Plays like that can make or break drives, which can make or break games.

The one thing I learned the other day, listening to Aranda talk, was that we as fans may see some of the big picture things, but we don’t always notice the details. We talk about how we need to improve in this aspect or that, but we fail to see that it didn’t work out because of a player not using the right technique there, or a player not being in the right gap there. But the players and the coaches know, and they work hard to fix those problems. All those small things get fixed, and I believe this team can be a smoothly-running machine. I’m not saying expect 70-0 wins, but there can be significant improvement.

That Idaho Statesman article Garret linked to way back in post #47 was great….

“Last Saturday, the team scored at least 45 points for the fourth straight game with a 44-17 defeat of Utah State at Mackay Stadium in Reno.”

Because if you score 44 points you truly have extended your streak of scoring 45 points or more. Someone needs an editor.

Kekoa: Re your comments several hundred posts ago about my cell phone. Even a 27-month-old analog phone has texting capability, but I don’t know how to write a text message or send one. I get messages in from t-2-t from AT&T wanting to sell me things, but sometimes eight or ten weeks will go by before I look at them.

At some point this phone will die and then I’ll be forced to look at something digital, but, until that happens, all I need is something to make and receive phone calls. I’ve had a cellphone since December, 1989, and the mystique long ago wore off. Ditto e-mail programs and the Internet – we were using Compuserv starting in the late 80s and registered our first four domain names in 1994. After we closed down our multi-media production company (1992 -2006), I realized how much my life revolved around electronics. Nowadays I much prefer to interact directly with human beings than using gizmos & gadgets.

Back to sports: Interesting that the women’s and men’s basketball schedules and season ticket prices are posted, but not the cost of individual tickets. The men’s volleyball season is also out but no information about tickets at all even though their first home game is less than a month away.

Nitey-Nite – another busy day tomorrow. Have a major paper due for initial editing plus a doctor’s appointment – another suspicious skin lesion on my face, but this one may be more serious than the first two.

    COLT SIGHTING!

“My name is Colt Brennan. I’m a 6th round rookie QB, grew up in So Cal, played college ball in Hawaii, so I’d say I am a pretty laid back kind of guy. I wonder if they took that into consideration when they decided to issue lockers? Considering they saw fit to put me between Chris Cooley and Jason Taylor. At first you may think, “what an awesome experience,” I get to be between two pro bowlers, potential hall of famers, dancers. Every day. For the next 5 months. What dream right? More like what a nightmare.”

    Great Morning All!

Impressive weight room numbers for Kiesel-Kauhane; 500# bench on the horizon -more than 2x his body weight 😯
Hope that someone can step up and replace Victor Clore in the wedge; it would be really nice to see Malcolm Lane take one (or more) to the house on Saturday.
It’ll also be good for Yoda to improve the PR #’s. (Will he get to use a light sabre?)

    Have a great day erryboddy!

    HiHo….
