There will be at least four positions locked up — for now — entering the start of next month’s spring practice.
Norm Chow said center Ben Clarke, defensive ends Tavita Woodard and Beau Yap, and kicker Tyler Hadden will be with the No. 1s for the first play of spring practice.
He said returning starters will get the first shot, but they will be challenged by newcomers.
No surprise that there is open competition at quarterback with Taylor Graham, Ikaika Woolsey and Justin Alo joining the mix. Sean Schroeder, who started 11 games last season, and Jeremy Higgins are returning quarterbacks.

Former Warrior cornerback/returner Mike Edwards said he will wear adidas’ adiZero shoes during next week’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Edwards has been training the past month in Arizona. He said his goal is to run sub-4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also will compete in UH’s pro day at San Diego State on March 19.
Eleven former Warriors and six ex-Aztecs are signed up for pro day, which will be attended by personnel officials from every NFL team.

I expect some heated competition from the JC’s. You know they’re going to want to play now. Should be heavy competition at receiver and linebacker.

Obviously, with so many returning starters returning from last year and only 4 have locked up starter status so far, that means there’s a ton of upgrades coming for 2013.
Upgrades both through recruiting and the returnees improving their games to fend off the new guys. Should be fun to watch this year. The coaches will have their hands full evaluating all the position battles.

Alabama players have not been kicked off per ESPN. They have just been suspended so far. Football trumps all other stuff in the SEC which is sad.

ST, So who is going to be the “quasi” OC for the Warriors this year? Chow should stick to being a “head coach” and let someone else be the OC.
JMO. The 2013 MWC favors Hawaii, short term program-wise and for the 2013 schedule.
Arguably, the two better teams in the Mountain Division are Boise State and AFA–they are both missed in 2013. More importantly, we play these two opponents only twice in a five year span and only once on the road during the same period. That gives our Warrior program an additional year to grow and 5 years to gain ground talent-wise against premiere inter-divisional foes. Than we are at home in ’13 against the Pacfic Coast teams in the West Division–SJSU, FSU and SDSU. Playing UNLV away is as close to home as you can get fan-wise, although we have met with misfortune in the MAC years @ Sam Boyd Stadium. Wyoming plays @ the highest altitude in college football….so that venue will present unique challenges.

Looking at the setup… UH’s only break is not playing Boise. Other than that, it’s a tough MWC slate as all the weaker MWC teams will be road games.
UH isn’t playing either New Mexico and Air Force, who I think UH would be favored to win or pick ’em.
That pretty much solidifies my prediction of 6 wins for 2013.
So here’s my picks vs known opponents (not in chronological order):

vs Navy — Win

That’s what I’m sticking with… there are a few variables that could change things:
1. SJSU, NV-Reno, and Utah St all have to cope with losing their successful head coaches. I would expect a bit of a drop-off but they return almost all of their key players. We can only hope they hired McMackin quality replacements to mismanage clock and game-planning.
2. SDSU has to replace their efficient QB Katz.
3. There’s a slim chance UH beats Oregon St if they’re not ready to play. I expect UH to cover the presumable double digit spread fairly easily.

68. If you watched SDSU, They won all their games that Dingwell started so replacing Katz means nothing. Their line play was key and losing big TE will hurt a lot. Also lose top DB. That said, I think SDSU is beatable. Best QB in the conference might be Fales out of San Jose St. Him and Carr are both very good. Fales has Chandler Jones, Noel Grigsby, and Tyler Ervin all back. San Jose St is going to be a nightmare.
If we win 6 games, I will say that’s a huge step for this program.

I believe the 2011 Hawaii @ UNLV game was one of the several Hawaii games with suspicious betting line movements.
I remember I was going to place a bet for UNLV (+20) because UH wasn’t nearly good enough to cover that big of number. When I went to the book, they spread dropped from 20 to 17 overnight, prompting me to not bet the game. After witnessing the horrendous display of D1 football, I couldn’t stop wondering what it took to get the line to move 3 points overnight without any key injuries during the week. On Monday, the local sportsbook radio was buzzing about how the much the UHvUNLV moneyline moved, which prompted the line to move. The moneyline was as high as +1000 at some offshore books (many Vegas books didn’t post a ML on that big of spread), but it dropped to +650 overnight.
There wasn’t enough hard evidence or witnesses around, so the story got buried pretty quickly. It’s really tough to prove price fixing unless there’s eye witnesses that come forward or people are stupid enough to have anything in writing.

Today’s NFL offensive lineman besides having quick feet has really quick hands. I’ve never met Coach Naeole. Only know of others who know him. Good balance, strong base, quick feet, good technique, good punch, low pad level, and really quick hands.
Very smart, good teacher, patient mentor. Was a student of the game so knows every phase of the game from bottom to top, front to back. Can teach on either side of the ball.
Did I say really quick hands. Not sure what that means, but the NFL guy kept saying that about Coach Naeole.
My friend Wing Chun had the same qualities. Not sure if he’s related to my kindergarten thru third grade classmate Hingson.

It was the same year, we won for the first and last time at Reno and the year we went undefeated.Even than, the road schedule wasnt as tough and we barely won at Ruston, Spartan Stadium and Reno. All three games were decided in the last minute with the help of a fortuitious turnover or two.
Annapolis will be cold in November and their cadet-fanbase and Coach Ken will present an imposing sight and field challenge… and, good teams struggle,mightily, in the thin air at Laramie. Especially running teams. Nevada’s new head coach is awesome, young and credentialized at ND, Texas AM and Stanford. He was the General’s personal pick.The wolfpack will be toughest on the road, together with Navy, Wyom and @ Corvalis.
Utah State lost its coaching staff to Wisconsin. Ditto with SJSU to Colorado. We have a better chance with those teams.
With only 4 positions set on both sides of the ball going into Spring, Coach Chow is sending a message that last years performance wont guarantee any position, save a few. To win six games in the fall based on pieces falling together is…well…hopeful 🙂
What Mr. Jay has to do prior to kick off is come up with some stellar marketing to get 30,000 buns in seats to start.
Time for some creative thinking. More students to the game to fill a section or 2. Promotions and cut in ticket prices to fill the nose bleed sections (better a deeply discounted ticket than no sale). Get the die hard pseudo, band wagon fan back and you’re good to go.
Since Boyd gaming is doing LV, get an Indian casino to sponsor when we go to San Diego. Make it a fund raiser where they set up gaming tables and people make a donation by buying chips to play. They can then turn in their winnings for Warrior memorabilia or drop a chunk into a barrel (set amount stated) to qualify for a free trip for two to San Diego to see the game and go to the nearby Indian casino. Hawaii loves gambling so why not make it available for a couple of good reasons, fund raising for the Warrior team (scholarships, etc..) and getting those who would use “pseudo gambling” as a reason to go to a game.
Spend some money and get one of the radio stations to help sponsor a Jawaiian Music Concert a couple of hours prior to the game with some notable local artists. Concert and a game. That could bring more students.
The days of simply showing up have gone, for the time being. Got to re-start with a different mindset.
Maybe that starts people going back to the game.

The QB situation, in my opinion, is very fluid. Graham looks to be the best going in, but there is still spring ball, summer, and fall camp. Aspiring QBs can jump up and improve quite a bit in one year, if they have been working on their skills and studied film. So, I would say that nothing is certain and things will unfold as spring practice starts. I have not seen a lot of tape from Graham and Woosley. We saw Schroeder and Higgins last year and I have seen quite a bit of Alo’s highlights. Right now, in my mind, Alo is the most athletic. Of course, Ewaliko is coming in the fall and he probably will be here in the summer. And you know he’s an athlete. The question is, who can learn the offense best and be the most efficient running the team, moving the chains, and score points. Everybody has a shot.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if a freshmen wins the job. It has happened before and it will happen again. At the very least, it will be very competitive.
David Fangupo is getting a lot of pub. I really hope he can get eligible to join the program this fall. Good luck Mr. Fangupo.

JMHO, if Hawaii wins 4 road games this year, they will win at least 8 games total. Any road win is huge for this program. Last year, we were O-fer on the road and 3 home wins.
Hawaii’s history is that we have a lot of trouble winning on the road. If the Warriors can win their share on the road, it’s almost a certainly that the team will make it to a bowl game.

Don’t believe whatever Boise State says. They enjoy playing Hawaii because they have dominated the series. Hawaii has won only 2 times during JJ’s time, his first year when Boise was not in the WAC and in 2007 when UH went undefeated. Remember Brock Forsey? Remember Ryan Dinwiddie? Remember Jared Zabranski? Remember Ian Johnson?
I’d like to see Hawaii beat Boise St. on the road before I die!!!! Better be soon. Us senior citizens can go anytime.

Why is it unreasonable to predict UH will get 4 road wins? Have you looked at how poor the road game opponents are at protecting their home fields?
Of the teams I think UH will beat on the road, in 2012: Wyoming went 1-5 at home. UNLV went 2-6 at home. Reno went 2-4 at home. Navy went 4-1 at home but their wins were against VMI, IU, FAU & TSU (ND & Army were on neutral field). These teams had a combined record of 15-46. In their lone home loss, they were shutout by SJSU.
Nobody here could name what schools VMI, IU, FAU, & TSU are without looking them up. Point is that Navy didn’t beat anybody remotely respectful at home. I think UH vs Navy will probably close, but the improved athleticism at WR and a healthy defense UH will be enough to beat Navy.
Hell, Wyoming lost to Cal Poly at home… I honestly didn’t know Cal Poly had a FB program.
Reno is facing the most uncertainty of the MWC teams that lost their coach. Fajardo is a nice player but losing the Godfather of the pistol/play caller will loom large. I can’t help but say Reno is going to drop off. Not to mention that I think Reno is a mentally weak team. When things start going bad, they implode (see blown 4thQ leads vs USF & SDSU; see getting blown out vs Fresno, and the ultimate implosion vs Arizona in the bowl game).
UNLV is still UNLV… they were much more competitive last year but they are physically inferior to UH’s 2013 roster.
note: the combined record of Navy’s home wins was before I remembered Army was on neutral field. forgot to adjust the number.

i highly doubt the Warrior defense will be able to hold all those opponents to under 20 points per game, which will be needed because the offense hasn’t shown the ability to score a lot of points. i see no clear winners, but many possibles…UNLV, CSU, Army, Wyo, SJSU. the UH is still a long way from where they need to be.

UH roster comparison (2012 v 2013) by unit. Obviously we don’t know for sure until all games are played…
QB – much improved
RB – Best offensive unit in 2012 gets more experienced and deeper, Lakalaka & St Juste will be active
WR – vastly improved
OL – Griffin is upgrade; more experienced, still questionable outside of Clarke.
DL – deeper, but questionable because Ekuale and Tua’au got poached
LB – more experienced and much better if strength and conditioning was successful.
DB – Best defensive unit in 2012 suffers big loss w/ Edwards departure, but incoming players look promising
I actually think only having 4 starters locked now is a good thing because competition only makes things better.

They lack strength. Also they were brought in to pass block. They lack the explosion to run block, it isnt their fault though. This isnt the system they committed to.

QB – very much improved. Taylor Graham takes over and I’m convinced Ikaika Woolsey is a “player”
RB – No doubt the strongest / deepest position on the team, Iosefa, in my opinion, is an NFL quality fullback. At runningback, I love watching St. Juste’s hi-lite reel, and I also look forward to Lakalaka and Aofaga Wily’s contributions
OL – Anybody take note of Elijah Tupai’s video? Kid has a mean streak to die for. Maybe he’s not as big / heavy as we’d all like, yet, but I can see him making an impact if he plays any way near what I’ve seen on tape.
Griffin has size, but he’s way too soft on top. I like Lefotu, Wa’a looks promising, and of course Ben Clarke had a stellar freshman season. Oh, less I forget, I think Naeole is a quality hire by Norm Chow
WR – size matters, and UH finally has some at WR. Good move.
DL – Moses Samia continues to get healthy, and that’s a really good thing. Beau Yap gets back to DE, and Tavita Woodard turned out to be a beast by the end of the season. If Kennedy Tulimaseali’i gets his academic work together, well, he just may turn out to be the prize of the 2013 recruiting class.
LB – Daley, decent, but way too stiff. Art Laurel, proven commodity, rest of the returnees, very questionable. Benny Fonua has high level skill, tenacity and instinct, but he needs to step up his game. New recruit, Washington, I likey
DB – not sold at all on Phillips and Grimes yet, however, at safety, I thought Morrell Jackson was big time.
Cocnerns: long snapper, kicker, kickoff returns and the ability to spread it out a little bit on offense.

As far as the O/L and their pass blocking techs. I’ve watched their practice and they are doing what their taught. They can all run/pass block. Is how they are taught to work with the system. As an O/L, Pass block is “butt down shoulders back, don’t lean”. They are taught 70% on the front foot and 25% on the back foot. Which tells me, over xetension and unable to recover when beat in or out. just my observation. Happy to have Coach Naeole on board. Looking for a much improved O/L this year.
I agree strongly with “Former” athlete on assesment. I really do not see this team looking even remotely comparable to last year. Phase one of the adjustment is done both with the roster and the coaches. So many things learned….updgrade at all positions. Still think there will be some surprise additions that will contribute. The coaching changes will be a key role. As far as the competition…last time Chris Ault left the program it went over the cliff. They lost a lot of guys. Wyoming will be improved, Navy is always a game….overall no cheap ones here unless hitting on all cylinders. I do believe that with the passing game looking much more vertical….the running game being more diverse….the roster have more size and experiene….I still think this team will go over 6 victories and maybe a surprise win. I have a ton of faith in NC building this program—-Go Warriors

133- cal poly has always had a football program. John Madden came out of Cal Poly. There was a plane crash and a lor of their players were killed back then. John Madden was hugely affected by that. Surprised you didn’t know that since you fancy yourself an expert on football….Cal Poly was rated 99 in the sagarin ratingfor 2012. Hawaii 161.
