Football clinic for women is set

The second Heather McMackin Football Clinic for Women is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 7 p.m.
It will start off in the Stan Sheriff Center. The second part of the program will be on Cooke/Ching field.
UH head coach Greg McMackin said his wife’s program will feature some changes from last year’s clinic.
“Everybody had a great time last year,” Greg McMackin said. “It’ll be even better this year.”
The cost is expected to be $10, and will include heavy pupus and a strategy book.

* * * * *

The UH-Navy game is expected to be picked up by ESPN-U — a decision that will impact the pay-per-view schedule. By claiming to be available to a potential 50 million viewers, ESPN-U can wrest the game away from K5, use its own production crew, and show it live — and for free — on its cable channel.

ST, if the clinic starts at 7 pm, about what time will it end? What does “heavy” pupus really mean? (In Hawaii, all pupus are “heavy”.) Just need to know if I need to eat “dinner” first.

Congrats to “The Beast” for being named to his conference’s pre-season All- Star team at DL!

Just so people know, you can’t just request to be SMU’d.
It’s like a defendant asking for the death penalty.
    There are certain procedures.

    Hi Garret,

Just read Momo’s post congratulating Jason on his position at his alma mater…Didn’t realize that your Dad was a teacher for 50 years! Just did the math and he would be my contemporary…so congrats to him for his dedicated service to the kids of Hawaii!

  17. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2009 7:32 am

I tried to post at 12:05 this morning.
That’s when the lights went out on Blogland.
Then I noticed there was an e-mail about “unscheduled” maintenance, although I think by sending out the e-mail, it sort of negated the part about “unscheduled.”

  18. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2009 7:35 am

Princess Leila texted last night to say she was on the same flight to Cali with Colt Brennan.

Pride ~ My chance to display a little dazzling footwork on the buffet line. It’s all about technique and the Angle of Attack!

  20. Pride. July 24, 2009 7:40 am

Perhaps we’ll have a chance to see that footwork next week Kekoa.

  21. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2009 7:42 am

So, I’m thinking, if some guys were to try to go to the women’s clinic, it would be a good idea:
    1) to not make a play for the women.
    2) to not go in the front of the “heavy pupus” line.

(By the way, I asked Mack: Growing up in Oregon, did you ever think you’d use the phrase, heavy pupus?)

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid July 24, 2009 7:43 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Scouting, Kekoa, scouting. I always walk the whole buffet line first to determine where to focus my efforts.

Good morning Hawaii – and best wishes OTUHF! Glad to see Pride up so early!

  24. Pride. July 24, 2009 7:46 am

That reminds me of a friend of mine who works at a fitness center. He’s about twice big as I am and ten times as mean. His pet peeve is men who hit on women while they’re working out. He enjoys kicking them out of the gym and asking them not too return.

When I say that he kicks them? I mean that literally.

  25. will-i-am July 24, 2009 7:55 am

I think rule is if guys do go they need to wear a dress and lipstick.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid July 24, 2009 7:58 am

    Fever all through the night

That about sums it up. Comes & goes. No energy to water plants this a.m. Had to find someone to do that for me. Slugs just hiding under the empty cups & not eating much. So, the Light beer that I have in the pantry is going to the next Tsaiko get together.

You guys can wear mu’umu’us! You live Hawai’i. Can find beeg ones.

Back to the couch. This flu gives you a headache.

  41. FloridaTed July 24, 2009 9:01 am

I wouldn’t be daring enough to go to the Womens FB Clinic, even less to step to the front (or middle) of the buffet line.

What an outstanding coupe for UH and McMackin and special kudos to Rick Blangiardi, for landing this FOX deal. I’m tickled. Should winning go hand in hand with this opportunity, it could reap very tangible benefits.

    Stephen:

Could you find out more information as to how this year’s clinic will differ from last year’s. Mahalo.

The first 45 minutes or so featured a PowerPoint presentation on the Life & Times of the McMackin Family and how they came to Hawai`i followed by brief introductions of the coaching staff and what their duties were. We then quickly skimmed through the handout with about ten minutes left for Q&A plus a look from afar at a uniform from the outside in.

Many of the O`ahu Tsaikette regulars were there sitting together right in the front about ten rows below where I sat Was able to exchange Howzits with a few of them afterwards at the reception.

I hope this time that the event organizers will allow more time for each coach to make a more detailed presentation as well as to allow the coaching staff to talk about recruiting. Perhaps the Athletic Director could also be persuaded to talk about fund-raising and the need for developing more community support for the team.

BTW – the pupu spread was quite nice.

    Long Time UH Fan,

I’m sure that Momo will appreciate your post when he reads it today. He is being forced by the State to not be paid as a teacher by the State for one year. They plan to hire him back once the year is over.

There have been some problems at the school with the students now that Momo isn’t teaching. They asked Momo to teach some classes to get things straightened out, which he started to do while I was still in Hawaii. He agreed to do that even though he cannot be paid, so the State was paying his replacement to sit around somewhere in a room away from the students while Momo taught the classes for free!

Hopefully Momo won’t have to teach many more classes, but he’ll still be going into the school just about every day because he has to take care of his hydroponic gardens. That is a great fundraiser for the school…so, he’s making money for the school and maintaining and improving an award-winning hydroponics setup without getting paid!

  67. Garret July 24, 2009 11:33 am

BSU is getting a *big* payday to open next season against Virginia Tech. They are playing at the Redskins stadium instead of at Virginia Tech and the Redskins will promote the game and get them a lot of national attention. Going from a game vs. Miami (Ohio) to a game against Virginia Tech is really upgrading their schedule.

The Redskins plan to do one college football game per year…if Colt gets the starting job there in a year or two he can hopefully lobby for them to get UH for one of these games…neutral site game, national TV, $1.25 million payday would be great!

The Broncos will play national power Virginia Tech on Oct. 2, 2010, at FedExField in Landover, Md. The game will be promoted by the NFL’s Washington Redskins, who own and play at FedExField.

The Broncos’ guaranteed payout will be a regular-season, school-record $1.25 million – more than double the $600,000 they earned for a 2005 game at Georgia, the highest-attended game in school history.

Bleymaier opened a spot on the 2010 schedule earlier this year in a deal with the Mid-American Conference, dropping a game at Miami (Ohio) to search for the kind of road game that could pad a budget hit hard by rising expenses and funding cuts. Boise State trimmed $750,000 from its budget for 2009-10.

“In these economic times, it’s huge,” athletic department spokesman Max Corbet said of the FedExField deal.

“The plus about this is we get a quality opponent, but we get it on a neutral field,” Corbet said. “For our team and for us, that was very important.”

This is a one-game deal that was put together by the Redskins, who are shopping for marquee events for FedExField, and a sports event promoter. The Redskins will host the Army-Navy Game in 2011.

  68. Garret July 24, 2009 11:37 am

The Big 12 Commissioner is trying to change the eligibility rules for football–FIVE seasons of eligibility, no redshirt year, no medical redshirt. Regular students are taking about 5 years on average to graduate, so why shouldn’t football players get 5 years to graduate also? Players can always leave early for the NFL if they wish, but this way teams would get the benefit of having a player play all 5 years instead of having them being on scholarship as a redshirt one year or having them leave after playing their first 4 years.

For the last couple of years, Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe has been trying to marshall support for a proposal that would give college football players a fifth year of eligibility.

Beebe is always optimistic — but nothing ever happens. A handful of college presidents and administrators who don’t like the proposal have lobbied successfully against such an idea, and have managed to shout it down every time it has a chance of even being strongly considered.

“I think it’s an awesome idea,” CU coach Dan Hawkins said. “I’ve thought it’s made a ton of sense since people first started talking about it.

“But, it’s so radical I don’t think it will ever get the legs it needs.”

Instead of a five-year window to play four years, college football players would have five years of college to use up five years of eligibility. No more redshirt years. No more medical hardship years. Five in five. That’s it.

The benefits would be huge. The downside? There are almost none, but it hasn’t stopped those averse to change from preventing it from happening.

The best reason for such a move is simple: it would increase the graduation rates of virtually every program in America. More kids would get degrees.

Too often, a student athlete uses up his four years of eligibility in his first four years on campus, but does not get his degree in that same period. When his eligibility is up, he leaves school without a degree.

Give that same student the chance to play football another year and he’ll stay — and continue to go to school and greatly increase his chances of getting a degree. He’ll have something to take with him when he goes out into the “real world.”

There was a time when most students earned their degrees in four years. But fact is, studies in recent years suggest that the majority of students now take longer than four years; in fact the average at schools across the nation is much closer to five than four.

  69. Garret July 24, 2009 11:38 am

Another benefit is that freshmen would get a chance to play instead of having their coaches worry about burning a redshirt year.

Five years of eligibility would improve the game, give coaches more flexibility and enhance the morale of teams.

In today’s game, most coaches are hesitant to use freshmen unless they can significantly contribute. It means that while those young players can learn on the practice field, they spend an entire year without actually playing in a game. That not only hinders their development as players, but it also means they are likely to be less enthusiastic about their classwork.

But give players the chance to play five years, and coaches would be much more likely to use freshmen in spot duty, whether it be on special teams or late in games. Young players would gain valuable experience without the threat of “burning” a redshirt season.

  70. Garret July 24, 2009 11:39 am

It would also save Athletic Departments money.

There’s also the possibility of simply saving a little money.

If players had five years of eligibility, it would likely mean the average recruiting class would have fewer players. That means fewer visits (each weekend “official visit” costs an athletic department somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500), and perhaps a little less money spent elsewhere in the recruiting process.

In this economy, saving even a few bucks can’t be a bad idea.

It might be time to do something for football that wouldn’t cost anyone any money, would improve academics and would improve the game. Then, if it works with football — which it would — the NCAA could consider following suit for other sports in the future.

But that just makes too much sense — and sadly, common sense seldom seems to reign in the decision-making process.

Thank you for your post. I retired with 30 years at Kailua High and went to Olomana school for a few years, I thought which went 20 years. I only stayed because I became really interested in Hydroponics and became real good at this..
After a few years, they hired a teacher to take over what I was doing. I was kept to help out the teacher and keep the program out of trouble. I gave my word that I would honor this sdrequest and stay on the program until this teacher retired. He did so last year. That is the reason for my long tenure at Olomana. I am a master with the lower end kids and can work wonders whith them. Because of this, the school kept me on and even now when I can’t get paid, they want me there to help the young teachers. as you know Olomana is a school of rejects from the other windward schools I am from the class of 53 from the old Maui High school

“The Redskins have signed rookie cornerback Kevin Barnes, the team announced on Thursday.
Barnes, a University of Maryland product, was the Redskins’ third-round selection (80th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft.

With Barnes officially in the fold, the Redskins can turn their attention to signing top draft pick Brian Orakpo and supplemental draft addition Jeremy Jarmon.

Both Orakpo and Jarmon remain unsigned with one week to go to training camp.”

K-State selling season vb tickets, $50 for season tickets, family pak at $100 for 2 adults and 2 keikis. do we need something like this to fill the SSC for wvb, mvb, and wbb. I know our season tickets cost more with premium seating, but the idea of a family pak for tickets, not just hotdogs, fries and a drink for $18.

  107. Ralph July 24, 2009 3:18 pm

Is UH selling season tickets for wvb, mbb and wbb already. Florida is already selling tickets for the regionals in wvb. maybe UH should start all sales early and keep selling up to opening day.

  108. Ralph July 24, 2009 3:26 pm

i’ve started reading the online media guides at K-State for wbb and wvb, but i’m not there, so it would be more practical to read UH’s and have something to give me an urge to get excited about the upcoming season but nada. No UH tickets, No UH medial online guides, and JD wonders why no one gets too excited over wbb, mvb and mbb and buys tickets. JD needs a wider window for sales, a lot of us won’t jump up when they finally annouce sales, like I told Rolovich, when I’m ready I’ll buy my fb season tickets or any other game tickets.

  109. g-nalo July 24, 2009 3:29 pm

    Long time UH fan

I enjoyed Heather McMackin’s clinic last year, and I hope they would have a continuation of information we learned last year. Hawaii fans, men and women, are very knowledgeable sports fans, so some of the information was stuff my group already knew. We would like the advanced class, please. Also, if there was a way to submit questions and have those answers printed in our handout. There were many ladies who had questions about terminology and strategies.

It was nice to meet Uhfan and Midori7 (I knew them from the pictures posted on this blog) that night. Have not had a chance to make it to any
    Tsaiko events yet, one day….

    Okay, back to lurking.

  128. Garret July 24, 2009 8:09 pm

Fantasy football analysis of Bess. One big flaw in this analysis is that Pat White is practicing at QB, not WR.

Upside: Bess went from undrafted free agent to one of fantasy football’s waiver wire wonders in 2008. Bess brought the exceptional route running he learned from playing in June Jones’ Run n’ Shoot offense at Hawaii and used that to become a productive slot receiver for the Dolphins. Bess hauled in 54 passes for 554 yards and was targeted 75 times during his rookie campaign. Logic says those numbers will likely increase this season.

Downside: Out of his 54 receptions, only one went for a touchdown, so Bess isn’t going to do much for you in the scoring area. Bess is primarily a slot, possession receiver, so his main contribution to your fantasy team is going to be in the reception department. If some of Miami’s younger receivers start to eat into his receptions, Bess’ fantasy value will drop significantly.

Bottom Line: Bess is probably a better NFL receiver than a fantasy one. He is a hard worker that has exceeded expectations but the Dolphins are looking to upgrade their receiver position. Miami drafted Pat White and he is basically a more talented version of Bess. The former Hawaii standout will probably equal his 2008 production but it’s unlikely he will put up numbers beyond that, making his average draft position of 165 just a little low in my opinion.

  129. Ralph July 24, 2009 9:05 pm

slugger UH shouldn’t hold a one night event and done to sell mvb and wbb season tickets and try to pick it up later on. should be an ongoing process. Myki and Sj mentioned that the turnout and response was excellent that evening. good job to the Murphy’s and coaches.

SailorBlue I hope you are relaxing and on the mend at home. The doctors at Tripler told me that you insisted on a Navy surgeon to do the repair job. They compromised by sending in a Navy SEAL with a rusty fishing knife to repair the *boat driver* from Annapolis.

Now that ESPN has elected to broadcast the UH-Navy game, the stakes are higher. We should be thinking of a friendly wager between us (for entertainment purposes only, of course).

Back to work…for some reason the reviewer who NSF is paying to guide us is unhappy that our technology is useful to the military and might actually save lives. He actually wrote a paragraph that he suggests (insists) we use that *apologizes* for the military application of our communications technology, and he included a pledge that the technology is actually intended for cell phones and we will just put it on defense systems for now until we can get into the cell phone market.

I’m going to point out the civilian uses for our technology (helping rescue people in mine shafts or trapped in rubble or avalanches, law enforcement catching drug smugglers, etc.), but I’m *not* going to apologize if we improve the communications for our soldiers! And I cannot believe that our government paid someone who is telling me (insisting actually) that we do that…

  147. Ralph July 24, 2009 10:13 pm

watch out Garret, the reviewer might sell your technology to China to neutralize any benefit to the US military.
