Just thinking aloud: Unlike some of the other UH sports, the softball team doesn’t have an end-of-the-year banquet, so …

It’s interesting that ASUH, UH’s student government, opposes the proposed student fee. It’s interesting that the fee was proposed last week, the final week of spring semester classes. The spring semester ends tomorrow.

Spartan life? Memorable quotes from 300:

Xerxes: There will be no glory in your sacrifice. I will erase even the memory of Sparta from the histories!

  4. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2010 6:08 am

    Queen Gorgo: Spartan!
    King Leonidas: Yes, my lady?
Queen Gorgo: Come back with your shield, or on it.
    King Leonidas: Yes, my lady.

ST, you mean the present version of the HA will end on June 6th and a new version will rise. OK, but hopefully, the new company will keep a lot of the present HA staff.

  6. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2010 6:10 am

King Leonidas: Children, gather round! No retreat, no surrender; that is Spartan lore. And by Spartan lore we will stand and fight… and die. A new age has begun. An age of freedom, and all will know, that 300 Spartans gave their last breath to defend it!

Good Luck to the wahine softball team!

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

I regret that I will be unable to attend tonight’s baseball game. I will be attending da keed’s play tonight instead (late change of plans). Please give the tickets to chawan.

    Go WAHINE!!

    ST, sad, very sad.

Go wahines and fill the nm sky with many new ufo’s. Go for broke!!!!

  11. Stephen Tsai May 13, 2010 6:26 am

It is interesting how some people think they can just transfer away a prize.
    Uh, no.
    Not so easy.
To complete the transaction, jm2375 must stand in her office, and recite, with motions, the I’m A Little Teacup song.

Sad to hear about the Advertisers last day…I hope that many of the Advertiser employees find spots in the combined paper and the rest find good jobs elsewhere.

Let me see how many football-related articles I can find today in 10 minutes…

Here are some of the reasons why the Pac-10 doesn’t want BYU.

BYU was not viewed as a good fit in the mid-1990s when the league considered expansion, and I asked a well-placed source if there had been any change in that view. “No change,” he said.

In fact, best I can tell, nobody in the Pac-10’s chain of command, from the CEOs down to the coaches, is interested in BYU for the following reasons:

    * The presidents and chancellors of the secular Pac-10 schools are wary of joining forces with a church-affiliated school (any church-affiliated school).

    * As it moves forward, the Pac-10 wants to increase its scheduling flexibility to provide more broadcast opportunities for networks. BYU would decrease flexibility because it doesn’t play on Sundays.

    * The potential TV revenue generated by BYU’s national appeal is not enough to overcome the above concerns — it’s not like BYU is Notre Dame.

(Part of BYU’s national subscriber base, remember, already falls within the Pac-10 TV footprint.)

    * The Pac-10 coaches and athletic directors aren’t interested in sending their 18 years olds up against BYU’s post-Mission 25 year olds.

    * BYU does not meet the Pac-10’s academic standards — it’s not a major research university.

Nebraska’s voters vote for a measure that will build a really nice downtown arena for their basketball teams. I wish that UH had this type of public support for facilities…

Smiles on the faces of Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Athletic Director Tom Osborne were evident Wednesday morning as they sat down to discuss the approval by Lincoln voters of a 16,000-seat downtown arena.

Less noticeable but more important to both men was the reduction in stress provided by the 56 percent to 44 percent victory.

Osborne agreed, saying: “I thought it would be a real nail-biter — 1 or 2 percent either way.”

The $344 million project provides a new home for the Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball teams starting in the fall of 2013.

  19. Garret May 13, 2010 6:49 am

The ACC’s former commissioner says that “everybody is scared” about expansion. This man used to be President of the NCAA and AD of Notre Dame and Virginia, so he’s pretty well connected to schools around the country.

When the Big Ten added Penn State as its 11th member in 1990, Gene Corrigan, commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference at the time, admitted his league was caught dozing at the wheel. The ACC quickly gathered itself and added Florida State as its ninth member a year later.

“This has everybody scared to death,” Corrigan told FanHouse Wednesday afternoon.

“My hope is whoever starts it doesn’t do anything excessive. The idea of a 16-team conference just messes up everything. I hope that doesn’t happen. I just think it would be … it would end up being harmful to a lot of people.”

The Big Ten and the SEC are by far the nation’s two most lucrative conferences. The Big Ten, according to tax documents, reported a total revenue of $217.7 million for the year that ended June 30, 2008, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported last March. The SEC reported to the IRS total revenue of $161.6 million.

This El Paso reporter concludes that *UTEP* would be more attractive to the MWC than BSU…but he’s ignoring the most important facts since he’s not exactly unbiased…

Yes, Boise State football has been BCS caliber of late. Can that last? Boise, Idaho, is growing rapidly; its metropolitan area is about 400,000. It has an airport. But sustaining a winning football program is much more difficult than maintaining power in basketball, a la Gonzaga. Fresno State couldn’t do it. Some schools are one-year flashes, such as Hawaii a few years ago.

Then again, El Paso does not have corporate money. Boise probably has more corporate dollars, and more dollars in the average citizens’ pocket.

If Boise has one advantage its that TODAY (but for how long) it’s a financial asset to its conference because its football makes everybody TV and bowl money. But that’s just TODAY.

UTEP has not sustained itself on the field and in the arena, but it would look to have more potential for that than does Boise, Idaho. At least by a tad.

Bottom line: If the Mountain West were to take one of the two, UTEP wins by a nose in a photo finish.

  21. Garret May 13, 2010 6:55 am

Report on SJSU (the #113 rated team according to this site) has some interesting discussion on how they are changing to a power rushing offense as they showed in their Spring game.

The only time I saw a four-receiver formation was on the final play, when it was chuck-it-downfield desperation time.

The Spartans ran the ball between the tackles time and time again. They used fullbacks and H backs. They threw to the tight end. (The tight end … Imagine that!)

Basically, I saw more smash-mouth football in four 12-minute quarters of a scrimmage than I saw all last season.

One of MacIntyre’s new hires is Bryant Young, the former San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle, who will coach the S.J.S.U. defensive linemen. Young, who will certainly find his way into Canton with the next decade, spent the 2009 season as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame, his alma mater. As the article points out, Young considered joining the former Notre Dame assistant Rob Ianello as part of his debut staff at Akron, but Young opted to move back to the Bay Area with the Spartans. Can you imagine any local family turning down an in-home visit from the former San Francisco great?

Plenty of marquee games on the schedule. In terms of winnable games, S.J.S.U. should look at U.C. Davis, Southern Utah, New Mexico State and Utah State as its best chances at improving upon last season’s two-win total.

Note: I like how the UH game is assumed as a loss for SJSU…

    DPK,

I still do my link collection blog, but after the Daylight Savings Time change and my need to wake up early for East Coast time companies and to take care of the kids in the morning, I just don’t have time to post during the free play time. I’m up a lot of times at midnight my time (the start of free play time), but I normally am rushing to finish my work then so I can go to sleep.

  26. Garret May 13, 2010 6:59 am

Article about how the negative things that fans say in message boards hurts the teams they are fans of. This article discusses specific examples in the past year where fan discussion cost this team some recruits.

Although the websites are great at helping to generate buzz about the program, they can also play a negative role when fans use the forums to vent their frustrations.

“We don’t read it as coaches, but recruits do,” said Lawing. “You can really damage our chances with recruiting when you start bashing a kid on the internet.”

The 15-year Gamecock veteran only had to go back to this past recruiting class for an example of the web’s negative impact. He explained that when a potential recruit mentioned Clemson as a possible destination, some USC fans criticized the prospect, and he was offended by their comments.

“He went the other way in about two days,” said Lawing. “We spend probably half our time in recruiting doing damage control because of what our Internet people do.”

Lawing relayed the story of an incident that occurred this past winter while the Gamecock staff was recruiting the state’s top recruit, Byrnes High School running back Marcus Lattimore. With about two weeks left in the process, Lattimore and his family shut down communication with all media outlets. Lawing was in the Lattimore home with USC running backs coach Jay Graham when Lattimore’s mother, Yolanda, heard her phone ring. She didn’t answer the call and went on visiting with the Gamecock coaches.

A few minutes later, the group saw an online report from a writer who claimed he had just spoken to Mrs. Lattimore and gave the details of what was said in that conversation.

“Somebody just made it up,” said Lawing. “A lot of times that’s how that stuff goes.”

  29. Buffoman May 13, 2010 7:03 am

If UH is the “ugly duckling” in anyone’s expansion plan. It’s time that the UH start making plans with a bunch of contingencies and dollars attached to it. Sitting around and waiting for the “good fairy” to come along and pretty us up is not going to happen. We’re not being looked at. No pretty girls is waiting for the ugly guy to ask her to the prom.

So, I said it before and it may be way, way off but we need to see us as different. We cannot look at ourselves as being like those teams on the mainland. They don’t care if our stadium has a 50,000 seat capacity, they don’t care if we have a terrific women’s volleyball and softball team. What bothers people up there is the ugly fact that they have this expense (made uglier in this tough economic environment with cuts made to athletic departments across America), to travel to Hawaii. The “13th game” is not prettying us up enough anymore. We have to think different.

My thought (which Garret and others will probably shoot down) is that we do the math and bite the bullet for the sake of survival, and figure a way to play all or conference games for the BIG squads, football, baseball, softball, on the road. We will not have them come here, unless they request it (and they will, when the economy gets better). What we want is a share of the television revenue. So, if we felt that this would be a good move, run it up the flagpole with the Pac 10. They’re looking for cheap, solid partners. We have a solid football team, when coached up right and playing well, same for baseball and basketball. We fit academically, which is what eliminated BYU. They recruit here so there’s a tie and when things get better economically, California send us a ton of tourists, I’m sure they’d pressure the California schools to make at least one trip every 3-5 years to play in the islands.

Sounds nuts I know, but conventional thinking is not going to make it as this is an unconventional situation. That large pond that separates us from the rest is something only we have and that could drown us if we think walking on water is a feasible alternative.

OK since ST mentioned that the Na Wahine softball team doesn’t have an end-of-the-year banquet, now the question would be if we had a end-of-the-year banquet tailgate for them would we be in violation of the NCAA?

College Students are usually broke. Any proposal for fee or tuition increases will always be met with resistance. ALWAYS. Tack on to it the spin of this that this fee is for “athletes,” and you can see how the wheels have been further greased for resistance (oxymoron, I know). This $50 fee will never be popular, BUT, students will get over it. GUARANTEE!! They’ll fight and grandstand….especially the student leaders. But in the end, this will blow over faster than Obama’s popularity did with white people. The powers that be should just move forward and cram it down the student’s throats like they do all other UH policies. Students will forget it very quickly.

    BIK

Sounds like a good crowd representing UH around the announcer.

Steph is real emotional. I’ve never seen her do the whole “what the heck!?!?!” look with her arms raised at the home plate umpire before and when I heard that, I fear that Ricketts may not shake “IT” off before this game is done.

If she can then good, but we’ll see.

I’m not conviced that Parnaby should be in YET.

  73. Kazz May 13, 2010 8:04 am

If Stephanie cannot settle down in this inning, then Parnaby better come in.

16 to 8 win! Great start for our ladies in Green. Tying the HR record takes a lot of pressure off. Very impressive. Onward and upward.

Thanks everyone for keeping us updated with the Wahine score. The game was close in the 4th when I was listening on the car radio on the drive to work. At work, my computer was giving me problems so I could not listen to the game online. Now that I finally got the computer bugs beat, I am glad to read the updated scores. I could feel your excitment in your posts.

Garrett …get a life…PAC 10 afraid of church related school? Why, they have no morals and stand only on a liberal platform! The PAC 10 is afraid a private school would be in the top 4-5 in all sports…that’s their problem. The PAC 10 is in horrible shape $$$ wise and CALIF is bankrupt…I’d worry about that if I were going to blog 8 hrs a day!

  137. papajoe2 May 13, 2010 9:33 am

cougar, I think its mostly because BYwho don’t play on Sundays. they don’t want to deal with rainouts to be played on Sunday, scheduling for prime games on Sundays to make money. the 25 year olds playing with 18 yo is spooky too.

does anybody know if Arizona played on “little fields” at any time during their homerun record season and how many homers did they hit at those “little” fields? how about “light” air or wind aided homers. i’m sure the mainland media will down play or discredit the wahine’s assault on the record even though a lot of those homers were way over the fence. I’m sure Arizona had some homers that just barely cleared the fence too, as with every other team. i know the excuses already were happening during some of the other sb games that was on ESPEN. we still have a minimum of 3 games to play. This record may last a long time, 365 days, is a long time, until the wahine play again next year.

  142. Da Punchbowl Kid May 13, 2010 10:02 am

Doesn’t Garret actually spend just a fraction of his sixteen hour days on the Warrior Beat?

Yeah. That’s right. He spends the REST of his time running his own Rocket-Science-High-Tech innovation company. He actually owns and runs such a company. Yeah.

Brief break between “getting sick” spells:

The post-season banquests are nice catered events in hotel facilities. Everyone dresses nicely – aloha attire or team polo shirts. Went to a couple of these events in other facilities as well – yacht club, golf club – over the years; however, I don’t ever remember any of them being a potluck

The women deserve something as nice as the other teams. T-Gates are a very different kind of event.

I believe that we have at least two Tsai-kos who work for Waikiki hotels, Why not talk to them to get basic information – who runs the catering department for starters.

Also, isn’t there a softball boosters club? What, if anything, are they planning.

Then there’s the issue of the seniors who are not coming back to Hawai`i, but that’s out of our control.

Good luck to the Bowsball – hope to be well enough to attend tomorrow’s double-header,

  150. Kekoa May 13, 2010 10:20 am

Pomai ~ Several positives about hosting a Tailquet party like that for the Wahine.

~ We present a greater variety of fuud.

~ Our food taste better than most Buffet style servings.

~ It’s prepared with a lot of appreciation included.

~ The open atmosphere to really kick back and relax.

~ Ricketts & Parnaby could show Homey what it feels like to stand in the box while they blast a few pitches past him.

~ Ralph will get a chance to field a few Kelly Majam pop flys inside the wire.

~ Calvin from Kona can demostrate how to hit for average while NOT spilling his beer.

~ The Parking is free, the cost is minimal.

Bring your ideas onto the blog for discussion, and maybe we can make something happen. Timing is everything!

    Regarding # 136

Garret was summarizing a bunch of articles that have been written about the Pac-10 and BYU. As many of us know Garret is our resident researcher.

  164. Pomai May 13, 2010 10:55 am

Not Again why not? Sorry but I live in the real world, UH doesn’t have the money and the girls deserve it, but my problem is I have to wait, cause we might have to have a front and back engaving “2010 WAC Champion” and “2010 National Champion”

    Go Na Wahine>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  165. Stretch May 13, 2010 10:56 am

Good game by the Wahine. It was actually good they were tested a little bit throughout the game. It probably knocked a lot of rust of their game that built up over the week off.

If we decide to get bracelets for the girls, we can test out the new UH Foundation account we have set up.

  166. al May 13, 2010 10:57 am

how come the uhad doesn’t fund the banquet like other sports?
is it a choice made by coolen to use the funds for other purposes?
this is where the donation box moolah could come in handy.

don’t mind me, i am just wondering aloud or am i wandering about??

  167. Pomai May 13, 2010 10:59 am

Old Diver sometimes people who tell others to “get a life” should really be talking to themselves.

  168. Garret May 13, 2010 11:01 am

    Old Diver,

I wasn’t summarizing the article–I just quoted word-for-word what the reporter wrote! So, cougar decided to tell me to get a life even though he was upset at what the reporter wrote.

My post made it very, very clear what was being written by me and what was being quoted from the article. If someone objects to what the reporter wrote, he/she can go directly to the article and make a comment to the reporter. The reporter *did* note that everything he was writing came straight from his recent discussions with Pac-10 officials (University Presidents and Athletic Directors) and BYU officials.

  169. Not Again May 13, 2010 11:02 am

  170. al May 13, 2010 11:02 am

pomai…thats a good reason to delay the order. i would think that jd and the dept would spring for ncaa champ bracelets when that happens.

  171. LizKauai m/ May 13, 2010 11:03 am

    I’m with the #165 concept.

    HiHo!

  172. Garret May 13, 2010 11:04 am

The *big* problem for BYU and the Pac-10 is that they have been very clear that all of their expansion decisions are based on what would be best for the Pac-10 TV Network. BYU and Utah bring the same state into the network so they won’t take both teams. It is a fact that the TV network can make more money if they can have some highlighted games on Sundays (especially basketball, but they would probably have a few Sunday football games also). So, Utah would get picked over BYU in that scenario.

  173. Pomai May 13, 2010 11:04 am

I guess I’m kind of funny (not that way koamahu) but I rather enjoy providing things such as bracelets or a banquet. It gives a feeling that the team is really ours, but that just me.

FSU 3-2 over BSU bottom of the 5th with 2 outs, runners in 1st and 2nd…intentionally walked Michelle Moses

ok…now its end of the 5th

  176. Slugger May 13, 2010 11:06 am

    jm2375,

I’d take one ticket to the baseball game for me, maybe 2, if no one has emailed you.

I’m overjoyed that Na Wahine have won their game! That is one gorilla off their backs. The icing is tying the homerun record. What I’d like to know is how many HRs the other teams are hitting as well. Is the altitude an advantage for everyone, or (we know this) are our players a notch above this season?

    GO WAHINE!!!

  177. al May 13, 2010 11:07 am

ricketts struggled. however, from the sounds of things (the broadcaster) it seemed as though that the umpire had a small strike zone that both pitchers struggled with. then the mind games take over.

while ricketts continued to work the corners, the umpire held fast his strike zone, thus the seven walks. whereas, the sjsu pitchers seemed to lay it down the middle.

agree with stretch that this was a good way to win today. it showed our toughness coming back three times.

it is good that we got the ugly game out of the way. i suspect that a more focused wahine team will be out there tomw. hopefully, they are done with finals as well.

  178. BleedGreen808 May 13, 2010 11:08 am

Michelle Moses pitching in this game rather than Melloh….hmmmm, are they looking past BSU because they want their star pitcher pitching against Stephanie Rickettes? One may wonder…

  179. Pomai May 13, 2010 11:09 am

Not Again, maybe you should head something up for them, me myself I’ll stick with the Na Wahine. I think if others are passionate about another program then shoots go for it.

  183. Stretch May 13, 2010 11:16 am

I was listening to the state baseball tournament final game and after Punahou won, it was mentioned that their team gets rings. High school team gets rings?? Damn, that’s the first time I heard about that. Pretty soon the coach will run out of fingers.

  184. Pomai May 13, 2010 11:16 am

Not Again – Shoots what are you putting together??

  185. LizKauai m/ May 13, 2010 11:21 am

Not Again- you are totally free to start up something to honor the hard-working WAC Champ tennis team! Remember that this is not an organization with a hierarchy, officers, treasury, planning committee, etc.

Everything starts with someone who stands up and takes a lead. If people like it, they will support it. You like it? Stand up for it and start the ball rolling with your own effort and see what happens 🙂

  186. BleedGreen808 May 13, 2010 11:22 am

Wow…Ball game tied at 4-4 top of the 7th…3 HRs by BSU…Still no sign of Melloh

  187. BleedGreen808 May 13, 2010 11:24 am

Pitching change for FSU…Morgan Melloh comes in top of the 7th with 2 outs, runner in first

  188. duffer (iPhone) May 13, 2010 11:35 am

Actually there’s a nice article in sports section under UH Sports about the tennis team. Mike Burger who’s the assistant coach is from Maui, he graduated from Baldwin. I don’t how to copy and paste links on my iPhone. 🙁

  189. Buffoman May 13, 2010 11:35 am

    Dennis #39

Here’s another thought. Okay, so nobody wants the “ugly duckling” and we’re forced to go independent. Interestingly, no body wants BYU because they don’t play on Sunday and are not “quite up to Pac 10” standards. Isn’t Navy also independent.

So, here’s the alternative. We get together with the other three and work an arrangement. We schedule each on an ongoing basis (independents, aside from ND of course, need to have regulars). Getting ND to schedule us, even if we have to go there to play is big as it gives us exposure. Pretty up the “ugly duckling”. Those major conference folks are going to need to schedule other teams. We may get on their schedule.

This may not get us many home games but here’s the spin. If the Big 10 was willing to pay us near a million to go there to play, the super conference would probably pay $1 million to have us come to play. Line up to 7 of these games and I believe we would make money for the athletic department. The problem would be to schedule as many of course, but that would a payday more than equal to what we made at the Sugar.

We would have to become a Stae of fans who will enjoy pay per view to watch our team play, but I can tell you that when we shcedule a home game, we would not have the problem we currently have in selling out the stadium, especially if we win or we give the BCS BIGs a run for their money.

Is this what you had in mind Dennis?

  190. BleedGreen808 May 13, 2010 11:39 am

    Ferd.

Check his column. That’s what he wrote.

What point is he making? Another column that’s confusing.

For five minutes now I keep repeating to myself “Wahine won’t be homing in on record just trying to make sense of what he wrote…and I can’t.

“A season before, the Rainbows had won their first WAC championship. Last year they did it again, and broke through with their first NCAA Tournament victory, upsetting 20th-ranked Oklahoma State.

Saturday morning, they face No. 21 Pepperdine in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship at Stanford. Hawai’i is now ranked a program-best 37th and coming off its third consecutive WAC championship, upsetting 28th-ranked Fresno State in the final at Fresno.”

We all know we can beat every one of these teams, but right now we have a huge target on our backs, especially after sweeping all the awards at the banquet.

As I mentioned all this to the team, their faces began to light up with excitement, and I could tell the passion was back. I told the girls we are not just “happy to be here” we want to win this tournament because no one ever remembers who comes in second place …”

  196. Pomai May 13, 2010 11:54 am

Is tennis considered a team sport?

  197. Garret May 13, 2010 11:54 am

    Buffoman and Dennis,

There is one *major* flaw with your reasoning…you are forgetting that the biggest revenue source for UH Athletics comes from home football games! Published reports estimated last season that UH gets between $700k and $800k profit from each home game. That doesn’t even count the money that UH gets from parking pass sales–I think that comes to another $150k or so.

Also, a BIG revenue stream for UH Athletics comes from donations that are required for people who wish to sit in certain sections of Aloha Stadium, with the required donations higher for the more desirable seats. If you don’t play at home, you get rid of ALL that money.

JD pointed out in a SportsHawaii chat last year that UH would have made *less* money if they took Wisconsin’s $1 million offer to play at Wisconsin instead of Aloha Stadium. The problem with the $1 million offers is that it does *not* include travel costs…and travel costs for UH are much, much higher than other schools to where the Big 10 and SEC (the 2 conferences with the big TV deals) are located.

So, you would make *less* money each game if you played only on the road. You would also be completely eliminating the required donations for seating and the parking revenue. When you do the math, you’d see that UH Athletics would end up going bankrupt even if they could get $1 million payments for each road game.

The other BIG problem with the road-only plan is that conferences are going to a model where *all* of their nonconference games have to be played in August or September. That allows them to schedule the conference games with maximum flexibility in October/November/December. If all the big conferences expand, that means that all of their teams need to allow for the chance to make the conference championship game…which means that nobody will be available to play UH at the end of the season.

So, going independent would fail because there would be nobody to play in October, November, or December. Going independent would also end the softball, women’s basketball, and other teams…which would force football to end because of Title IX.

Sorry to pour cold water on the idea, but the numbers do not work out.

  198. LizKauai m/ May 13, 2010 11:55 am

bluefintuna- Ferd’s headline is a little misleading, I think. Here’s the meat of the story for me:

“As the WAC regular season champion and tournament’s top seed, perhaps the only thing that can derail UH is the Rainbow Wahine playing out of character. Which is why they preach staying in form and keep talk of the impending record to a minimum.”

    And I agree.

  199. Garret May 13, 2010 11:55 am

One more flaw with the road-only plan:

UH is telling the students that they will get 5,000 seats set aside for each home football game in return for their $2 million in Athletic Fees. But if you play all your games on the road, what happens to that deal?

The state would also lose a LOT of money if Aloha Stadium stopped holding football games. The food vendors could sue for breach of contract. The loss of the fees that UH pays for the use of the stadium would mean that maybe the Stadium Authority would be forced to make severe cutbacks or close Aloha Stadium as a football facility. Why would the stadium be needed if UH plays every game on the road?

So, re #195 – The Wahine have had a banquet. A GREAT banquet! So I like the idea of a Bracelet-Gate if the opportunity arises.

  202. Guys in office May 13, 2010 11:59 am

#193. He’s saying that Coolen didn’t want his players to think/dream/seek the home run record because it could alter their swings, mess up their focus, and place unwanted pressure on them. Coolen just wanted them to play within themselves, and if the home runs come, fine. If not, they’d find another way to win.

  203. Pomai May 13, 2010 12:00 pm

    193 bluefintuna

What ferd is saying is that Coach Coolen doesn’t want the girls to go away from what got them there. Not to push to hard to just get the ball out of the park, just take your normal swing and they will come.

  204. Pomai May 13, 2010 12:02 pm

Well I guess that’s two of us who understood what he said, I think. LOL

  205. Buffoman May 13, 2010 12:04 pm

    Garret:

    Maybe more concerts?

I don’t believe we’re advocating independent status, but the fact remains, while home games may get us $700 to $800k, if we have no one to play because no one wants the ugly duckling, because “ugly” is translated as “we don’t want to pay for the cost to travel to Hawaii” and it would really break UH to pay for the teams to come to play, there has to be another way to pretty up the “ugly”.

If there is any truth to the point someone made earlier that the WAC teams defected and did not take UH to the MWC because they did not like the cost to travel here, we cannot expect that equation to change.

I’d like to see what you and others have to offer to get or keep UH in a conference as I believe we are all in agreement that independent does not work.

  206. d1島 May 13, 2010 12:09 pm

  207. Kazz May 13, 2010 12:12 pm

Fresno State barely beats Boise State 5-4.

Wahine will face Fresno State tomorrow at 10am Hawaii Standard Time.

ESPN 1420 WILL carry this broadcast.

  208. Garret May 13, 2010 12:21 pm

    Buffoman,

Yes, travel costs to Hawaii *were* a big factor why UH was left out of the MWC. The problem is even greater now because travel costs to Hawaii have gone up and many new nonrevenue sports have been added due to Title IX. There are 2 things that can be done to make UH more attractive:

    1. Win in football and men’s basketball. If UH had been ranked last year in both sports, UH would be much more attractive to other conferences. The MWC wants to get AQ status and they have to boost their average computer ranking of football teams to do so…hence their interest in BSU. Have you seen UH’s computer ranking the past 2 years? Hopefully (but not likely) expansion can wait until next summer so UH has one more season to upgrade its status.

    2. Provide travel subsidies. These have to be for more than just football–think of the cost of baseball, soccer, softball, etc. Trouble is, UH Athletics is already $10 million in the hole and is losing $2 million per year, so they cannot really afford to offer the type of travel subsidy needed.

So, basically it comes down to winning. NO conference is going to want to invite a team that struggles, especially since the evaluation period for BCS AQ conferences is from 2008-2011. Even more importantly, TV viewers want to watch ranked teams or name teams…that is why ESPN picked so few UH games this season. ESPN will show the games get them the biggest ratings–they love UH in 2006/2007 and they are staying away now.

  209. Garret May 13, 2010 12:22 pm

“love UH” should be “loved UH”

  211. Kazz May 13, 2010 12:28 pm

What is “out of character” for the Rainbow Wahine softball team?

    Small ball? Perhaps…

We’ve seen this team comeback from wins and big leads lost. We’ve seen this team bat their way out of pitching struggles and we’ve seen this team pitch it’s way out of hitting slumps.

Really, what will be out of character is this team just plain ole giving up when the “chips are down”.

I’ve never seen Ricketts have TWO bad games in a row. She WILL start tomorrow against Fresno State and will be ready to go. That long layoff between games effected the Wahine, but they’re tasting that second WAC trophy and I think they like it. 😎

With regards to hosting a “picnic/banquet” thing for the softball team, IF COMPLIANCE PERMITS… it’s a great idea. The only thing is, I’m pretty sure a decent amount of the players may not be here for it if we’re able to do this for them when they return from the WAC tourney and the regionals and hopefully more… 😎

With no planned “events” before they left, I’m pretty sure the mainland players have trips scheduled to return home for the summer and either those tickets have been set and whatnot.

    Still a GREAT idea.

I believe that the UHLWC could request the use of the Wong Hospitality Suite in the SSC for an open house type of banquet for Wahine Softball Letterwinners and UHLWC be the sponsor. We would just need to contact all UHLWC board members for approval to be the host.
Sodexo has the contract for all food and beverages in the SSC.
If the food is donated then there is no charge from Sodexo. If the beverages (na) are donated there is no charge from Sodexo.

Slugger, you think the kitchen you visited Saturday could roll out 100 to 125 servings of home made Mexican food or home made Italian food?
Food donation is covered as of this date & time if the project is a go.

Who covers the beverages? Who contacts Jim Donovan/Rich Sheriff to make the request for the Wong room donation fee to be waived? Who picks the date?

    Garret:

True. Problem is that we don’t have the luxury of time on our side if what was reported yesterday afternoon is indeed the path of the Big 10 and the subsequent dominos falling. it appears that the Big 10 will invite teams to join their parade which in turn will force the hand of others who were poached Big 12, Big East, the ripple effect, as stated by the folks at ESPN 1420 would be broad and would affect even mid majors.

So, while I agree that winning means we live to play another day, if September was the date when these jumps needed to be done were done, we have no time to prove to folks that Coach Mac’s third year team is a dominate one, coach Gib will rule the basketball roost when that season starts. If, as they say, folks in the conferences have already begun to “save their own skins”, it may be a little late for us if we have not prepared a pretty up program to save this “ugly duckling”.

I just hate to be left with no plan and ultimately be left out of the dance. Whatever we do will cost us, if we want to continue to play, but the solution simply cannot be looked at from just our perspective, as we are different.

Karl Benson is at the WAC softball tournament and talked about realignment today.

Since 2000, the league has seen New Mexico State, Boise State, Idaho and Utah State come on board, and has remained stable.

Rumblings have surfaced, however, that Boise State could now join the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos, who have been the premier football program in the WAC since joining the conference nine years ago, would give the Mountain West more horsepower in its bid to become an automatic BCS bowl-eligible conference.

“History has shown that there’s movement in conference membership,” Benson said. “Since 1990, only two conference’s have seen no movement — the Pac 10 and Ivy League.”

While Benson spoke of the credibility and national recognition BSU has provided the WAC, he also points out there has been a good partnership between the school and the conference that has brought both entities success.

“As good as Boise State has been to the WAC, the WAC has been awfully, awfully good to Boise State,” Benson said.

Aside from Boise State, Benson said Louisiana Tech could leave as well, possibly to Conference USA, which would line up more with its geographic location in Ruston, La.

  222. Garret May 13, 2010 1:53 pm

Benson cited NMSU as an example of a successful WAC program…

By the way, UC-Davis, Cal Poly, and Sacramento State are dealing with *huge* budget cuts right now…they aren’t really candidates to move up to D-IA.

Benson said “four or five schools” have expressed interest in joining the WAC. Such schools could include Cal Davis, Cal Poly, Montana, Sacramento State, Portland State and Texas State.

“Anything west of Ruston, La. is considered in the WAC (geographic) footprint,” Benson said.

Again, this is not Benson’s first rodeo. The commissioner believes that if there is movement among league members, the WAC will continue to thrive. He pointed to NMSU as an example of a sports program that has gradually grown since joining the WAC five years ago.

An entertaining thought to the realignment would be Notre Dame screwing the Big 10 and going to the Big 12! That would be an awesome move for Notre Dame because they would be affiliated to a big conference and they really don’t have to share the revenue’s. Just a thought…..

  231. Pomai May 13, 2010 2:44 pm

Before any plans are made for any type of banquet, we need to talk to Coach Coolen for his input, an understandably he is pre-occupied at the moment, so it will be a while before we set anything in to motion, he may want to hold off until fall so that most of the team is on island.

Also in regards to a tailquet or banquet that is one of the things that we want from the coach, to have the girls decide which they would like.

I had to laugh at this:

(from Katie Grimes’ “diary” on the Advertiser:

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — You could cut the tension in the air as we entered the Western Athletic Conference banquet.

While the room was filled with more than 150 ladies, keep in mind we also are ballplayers of a very competitive nature.

As we walked into the dining area, stares and glares were shot our way as we, the WAC regular-season champions, walked through the room.

Truth be told, I love to be hated, especially knowing the resentment stems from our almost perfect season. However, despite all the hostility, it was a great day for our team, our program, and our university. For the second time in our program’s history, we swept all the major awards at the WAC banquet.

Oh man I would have KILLED to be there to see it happen. All those looks and all that jealousy… SWEET!!!

Plus, maybe it’s just me noticing this, but I have no clue how the other teams dressed up for that WAC Awards Luncheon, but the Wahine looked like an olympic team dressed to kill with their UA warm-up gear on. If that made them look cocky to the other WAC teams… TOO BAD… SO SAD… 😆

    I LOVE IT!!!!!!! 😈

does anybody know if Arizona played on “little fields” at any time during their homerun record season and how many homers did they hit at those “little” fields? how about “light” air or wind aided homers. i’m sure the mainland media will down play or discredit the wahine’s assault on the record even though a lot of those homers were way over the fence.

Oh yeah, there will be TONS of attempts to discredit the Wahine should they break the record.

Truth be told, it’s basic science that a small ball park along the lines at Las Cruces and a thinner atmosphere provide the perfect conditions, but for anyone that has watched the Wahine play, all the excuses are a big joke.

The MAJORITY of the Wahine’s homers at home and on the road (elevation or not) have all be high and deep.

High and deep… much like the description of how far the critics’ heads have gone up into to their own okoles.

However, the further and further the Wahine get beyond the WAC tournament is one BIG challenge after another.

The pitchers get REAL deadly quickly.

  260. A-House May 13, 2010 6:41 pm

    Chancellor HInshaw:

Please continue your quest to make the $50 per semester “athletic fee” a reality.

The “incoming” AUSH President is quoted as being “double tax” for the concert fee.

Wait till he and others hit the “mainstream” reality of work from their now bubble and see how many times a day they are hit for the same “tax”. When they reach retirement, they will see even more “double taxation” as nearly all retirement plans are taxable as is Social Security and military retirement income. But this is after tax dollars we put into our plan!!! So sorry!!!

UH needs the athletic fee to help the Athletic Department dig itself out of the nearly $10 million deficit.

  261. Garret May 13, 2010 6:56 pm

    A-House,

The interesting thing to me about the Student Athletics Fee is that it will generate about $1.9 million or less for the Athletic Department ($2 million – 5% for stuff for the students – the ticket revenue they would have gotten from the free seats). The Athletic Department has a deficit of about $2 million per year, which Upper Campus ends up covering each year.

So, after the Athletics Fee is instituted, the Athletic Department will *not* really have any extra money. All of the student fee will just reduce how much Upper Campus has to subsidize the Athletic Department. When you think about it, the Athletics Fee is really a way for the University to raise fees for the students and save money for the *University*. That is $1.9 million more for the University…and $0 more for the Athletics Department for the “Athletics Fee”.

Theoretically, the 5,000 free seats set aside for each football game and the free seats at all other sporting events will reduce Athletic Department revenue. For games like USC where they will sell a lot of tickets (at a higher price than normal), it might reduce the money the Athletic Department gets by some noticeable amount. Thus, Upper Campus will get $1.9 million more money and the Athletic Department will get *less* money after the Athletics Fee begins. ST has said several times that the students should get great seats for football and basketball games after the Athletic Fee starts…those seats would normally go to season ticket holders who are required to give a minimum donation, so that would cost the Athletic Department a lot of money.

At least it reduces the deficit each year. However, the $2 million deficit really could be looked at as Upper Campus needs to provide $2 million more to the Athletic Department than they already do. Some Pac-10 schools lost more than $2 million last year (I read one school’s Athletic Department lost over $6 million), but their Universities don’t talk about deficits and they don’t keep a running tally of the losses. Only at UH does Upper Campus do that…

  262. madeinhawaii May 13, 2010 7:05 pm

What UH needs is more students with school spirit. Students that will take pride in their school and try to put back what they get out of it. Not just those that want to take..take.. and only take. BUT, if 70% oppose the fee.. sheesh.. UH is not doing a good job on self-image and the promotion of school pride. No school pride.. no school spirit, no grass roots student body campaign for the fee? aiyah.. If the fee doesn’t go say goodbye D1 football D1 any sports for that matter. They want second rate.. they will end up with second rate… in everything.

    Made,

Students with spirit or not will NEVER vote yes on anything asking them to shell out more money. It’s not the monetary amount, it’s the principal (legitimate or not) of the matter for a lot of them.

That 70+% figure thrown out means nothing really and for some it simply means the students don’t want to pay for (insert blank) and it could be anything.

Its like running a poll in the Fresno State softball dugout amongst the players and asking them, “do you opposed to Hawaii being the favorite to win the WAC softball tourney”?

Pass the fee, get it over with, maybe deal with some minor displays of protest at UH sporting events, and in a few months the students will get bored with another topic or maybe by then Michael Moore will make a new movie.

Rainbow Wahine Volleyball = Beauty, Brawn, Skill, and BRAINS!!!

    5/13/2010 3:09:40 PM

HONOLULU – The NCAA announced the public recognition as part of the 2010 NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) and the University of Hawai‘i women’s volleyball team was honored for posting multiyear academic performance rates (APR) in the top 10 percent of all teams within the sport.

Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

For the fourth consecutive year, the women’s volleyball team posted a perfect score of 1,000, and received the NCAA’s public recognition for the second straight year. The Rainbow Wahine was the only UH program which was publically recognized by the NCAA.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced at a later date. That announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams.

    Good job ladies!!! AWESOME!!!

Slugger — please post the do’s and don’ts so that everyone can see the overall situation.

  286. Garret May 14, 2010 2:01 am

Feature article on Ryan Mouton and his competition for a starting CB spot with the Titans.

Ryan Mouton has his eyes on the prize — starting cornerback for the Titans — but he has to prove he’s willing to fight for it.

That’s because the coaches can’t contain their enthusiasm about Jason McCourty, who’s doing everything right.

The 2009 draft picks are part of a six-man battle to replace Nick Harper, who was not re-signed, on the side opposite former All-Pro Cortland Finnegan.

McCourty might be the dark horse — he was a sixth-round pick, while Mouton was a third-rounder. The Titans also signed veterans Rod Hood and Tye Hill, a former first-round pick, and last month drafted UCLA’s Alterraun Verner in the fourth round. Free agent Jamar Love has put himself in the mix as well, Cecil said.

For now, however, McCourty is running with the first team, a reward for a great offseason.

“We had to go through the struggles. Now we’ve learned a lot,” said Mouton, whose problems in the return game contributed to a loss to the Jets. “I lost confidence, I can’t lie. After that Jets game, that was a big blow, especially as a rookie. That held me down for a little while. But I have the utmost confidence in myself right now.”

  287. Garret May 14, 2010 2:04 am

Mouton already has needed a little jolt, however.

He missed part of the team’s voluntary conditioning program earlier this offseason, but said some of his absences had to do with complications from being sickle cell trait positive.

It’s not as serious as sickle cell disease, but he did experience blood clotting during a visit to Colorado and underwent a number of tests. High altitude was at fault, and he’s fine now, he said.

Yet Mouton admitted he didn’t take his job as seriously as he should have until a reminder from Cecil.

    NYUH on # 290,

I’m not averse to thoughts of WAC expansion, but to my mind I’d like to see better candidates than the ones you proposed. Those additions (along with the possible loss of Boise State) would present immediate challenges to the conference’s credibility. I think we’d be a laughing stock. It would be subtraction by addition, essentially.

  308. Dennis Halloran May 14, 2010 7:02 am

UC Davis , Montana, Portland State, Sacramento State would expand the WAC nicely
When I bounced the idea of independent, I did not advocate less than 7 home games
Late year games with biggies will probably be lost when big conferences go to Championship games
Worst case REAL scenario is MWC getting a bigger gap between WAC and themselves and us not being in MWC
Winning cures all in the end, but I think it is too late

  309. Maverick May 14, 2010 7:31 am

    Ouch.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Boulder prosecutors filed theft and trespassing charges against a UNLV assistant football coach after authorities accused him of taking the wallet and gun of a strip club’s bouncer.

Prosecutors filed the charges Thursday against Tyler Gregorak, who is UNLV’s linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. UNLV’s athletic director asked Gregorak this week to resign.

The bouncer told police his items were taken from his car May 1, hours after he refused to allow Gregorak to enter a Boulder strip club because he appeared too intoxicated. The bouncer told police Gregorak later went to his home to apologize and return his items.

Gregorak played linebacker for the University of Colorado in 1997-99 and was linebackers coach for the University of Montana before joining UNLV.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    GO WAHINE!!! GO BASEBOWS!!!

Amanda Patterson reviewed the NCAA regs. and we can not use a neutral site (the T-Gate site) to provide a picnic/tailgate-type potluck for the players. We can feed them at a booster’s home. (Forms need to be filed with Athletics…) Anyone have a BIG home?

The banquets are paid for out of the Foundation. A team can only have one per season.

We’ll first have to check with Coach Coolen and right now is not the time.

    GO SOFTBOWS!!! GO BASEBOWS!!!

  321. haka May 14, 2010 8:15 am

what i dislike is people who like to talk big fish, but can’t swim the talk.

  322. Buffoman May 14, 2010 8:25 am

Okay so it seems that the expansion plan would be, if the WAC got raided and BSU, FSU and Nevada got pulled to MWC or elsewhere, we’d go get the aforementioned schools: Portland State, UC-David, et al..

So, the WAC would then be intact but a “minor mid-major” just above D-II or whatever they now call it.

I’d guess we should be happy we’re still in a conference but please let’s make no mistake about it. Even if we go undefeated in any season, we’re never going to be ranked high enough to be considered for one of those BIG BOWL games. The RPI or whatever they call it will never reach the zenith it would have to rise to to be condisered just given the make up of the new conference.

I’m okay with that, as long as we get to see UH play ball, in all of the sports. Question: We will now be solvent and out of the red or will that still be a problem? My thought is that we’ll still be in the red as being relegated to “ugly duckling in a step child conference” level will not garner enough dollars to continue to field all the teams we need to field to be in compliance with title IX.

  323. Pomai May 14, 2010 8:25 am

    #321 Slugger
I’m not saying that not the case, but it sure is stuipd, I can have them over for a bbq at my house but not 2 miles down the road. Yet they can have the banquet at some hotel ballroom or hall?

We have been in contact with Coach Coolen and nothing will be decided until he returns from the mainland, at that time we will sit down with him an figure out what they want to do.

  324. Pomai May 14, 2010 8:31 am

Buffoman this whole conference realignment sucks big time, but I will bet we are not the only ones that will be left holding the bag. I know all the answers that Garret has posted on it but to me all the spin they want to put on it ($$$) doesn’t make it right.

  325. Kazz May 14, 2010 8:31 am

    LIZ,

If you have Oceanic, just DVR the “Paid Programming” and set the time for approx 3 hours to stop recording just in case.

I hope this works, unless Oceanic CHANGES it to what it’s supposed to show and that is UH Softball. If they change it all of a sudden, my DVR gets erased.

I got some backup help from someone with Dish to record just in case though.

  327. al May 14, 2010 8:37 am

i am just wondering why they have no banquet?

    is it coolen’s choice?
what about the softball boosters, parents, etc.?
    no funding?
    not budgeted?
i would think that under gender equity that the institution has to allocate some cash for this effort.

maybe the nfa needs to take action.

just wondering why they haven’t picked up on it.

  328. haka May 14, 2010 8:38 am

or are you (coughing once more followed by a loud sneeze) under the weather and needed to stay home?

  330. al May 14, 2010 8:39 am

haka…don’t you agree that the haka needs to be a tradition that is never broken?

  331. Kazz May 14, 2010 8:41 am

    Slugger,

I forwarded you the email from Coach Coolen (sent one to Pomai too).

But WOW… Don mentioned use of the Ed Wong Hospitality Room and it is NOT a neutral site and on campus property, so did Ms. Patterson say anything about using campus facilities for the once a year alloted banquet?

Realistically speaking, this is probably better. It’s a nice room.

Only thing is the $$$$ since I think we gotta get Sodexho to “cater” and whatnot…. Too bad, because the off site picnic/potluck style would have probably been cheaper. But still the Ed Wong room is nice and probably cheaper/easier than an acutal hotel ballroom.

  332. Slugger May 14, 2010 8:43 am

    Kazz,

Liz has a Dish, not Oceanic.

    Pomai,

The fancy banquets at hotel ballrooms, golf resorts, etc., have to be paid for by the Foundation. Booster can OCCASIONALLY feed a student (4 x yr.) in their home which is what your potluck idea would fall under. You don’t want a player to become ineligible, so the Athletic dept. tracks the number of times they are hosted by a booster. I think we should continue talking about this online. And it’s moot anyway. They are on the mainland and will play ball beyond the WAC Tournament. Don’t think we can do anything in the near future.

    K, off to UH….Esme & out….

  333. Slugger May 14, 2010 8:44 am

    Kazz,

If we used the Ed Wong Hospitality room, money would go through the Foundation to pay for the banquet.

  335. haka May 14, 2010 9:00 am

    Al,
Personally, I do like the haka or ha’a. I think it brings them together. I don’t know if I need to see it though. I mean, it has become something of a spectacle for the fans, but I like it as an emotional inspiration for the players. It may be better suited for them if it is done within the locker room. Get pumped before exiting for the field and let the voices echo through the chambers to the opponents locker room. A roar of battle tradition within themselves.

  336. al May 14, 2010 9:03 am

Thanks for all the dvr suggestions. jm*.* and I are Dish people. I set it on paid programming and extended for 90 minutes early this AM. I’ll check it again online to make sure the programming didn’t change. It was a little tricky because the dvr already had an ongoing command to record all Family Guy and The Office programs known to man (sons’ choice) and I had to override the existing reservation.

So today is our big SOFTBALL day. Go WAHINE and GO WAIMEA!!!

    Hi Ho Cheerio!

  338. SteveM May 14, 2010 9:11 am

    Good morning everyone!

    GO WAHINE!

  339. Kazz May 14, 2010 9:23 am

I think it’s apparent that UH softball and the other non-revenue sports are budgeted to the point where it shouldn’t effect the student athlete’s performance in the classroom and on the field of competition. Equipment and access to the proper alloted facilities are taken care of. The extras like bracelets, banquets, etc are just “pluses” and that’s what booster clubs are for.

All of these things are a choice and not a true necessity, BUT to enhance the student athlete’s experience at UH, I think, in a way, it is a necessity of sorts and those that want to contribute in the efforts should.

It wasn’t that long ago that even most of us felt personally “shafted” that the 2007 WAC softball/super regional team almost walked away with nothing, but that’s just me talking… or maybe others too. 😎

While this subject can be very touchy for most people, my opinion is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do appreciate that youve added relevant and intelligent commentary here though. Thank you!

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Howdy, i read your blog occasionally and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam comments? If so how do you prevent it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it’s driving me mad so any assistance is very much appreciated.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
