I first met John Wooden when . . .
OK, OK. I didn’t know John Wooden, who is arguably — and I think “arguably” is arguably the dumbest sports phrase — the greatest coach.
But it was in 2000, I think, when UH played UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. During pre-game warmups, while I was pretending to read my notes I noticed … wait … could it be … that Wooden was sitting across the court. So I raced to the concession stand, bought a copy of one of his books, and then stood in the line of people seeking his autograph.
Anyway, the Wooden-autographed book is the prize in the final Warrior Beat contest (with The Advertiser). And, no, he did not personalize it, so, yes, the winner may re-gift it.
To enter, please post: “Arguably is a dumb phrase.”
Avis will choose a winner tonight. For dramatic effect, and lack of blog material, the winner will be announced tomorrow.
