I first met John Wooden when . . .
OK, OK. I didn’t know John Wooden, who is arguably — and I think “arguably” is arguably the dumbest sports phrase — the greatest coach.
But it was in 2000, I think, when UH played UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. During pre-game warmups, while I was pretending to read my notes I noticed … wait … could it be … that Wooden was sitting across the court. So I raced to the concession stand, bought a copy of one of his books, and then stood in the line of people seeking his autograph.
Anyway, the Wooden-autographed book is the prize in the final Warrior Beat contest (with The Advertiser). And, no, he did not personalize it, so, yes, the winner may re-gift it.

morning Bprew, did you watch the Florida vs Missouri game, Brombacher of Florida was not called for a single illegal pitch. Goes to show, if she paid attention to technique and detail, she can pitch without lifting her plant foot. But the talking head of ESPN, Michelle Smith, insist that the rule needs to be changed or modified to allow a little rise of the foot because it does not give an advantage to the pitcher to do so.
They also talked about doing away with composite bats to bring the game back to normalcy where the run production wouldn’t be so high and the number of home runs would be lessened.

I just wanted to come on and say MAHALO NUI LOA for everything Stephen, all the Tsaikos and the Warrior Beat has done for sports, and UH sports especially, in Hawaii. (I’m in the Oklahoma City airport waiting for a flight to Phoenix…)
Tracy (Kinda Shy) and I have enjoyed watching this blog become a true community — and I might add a community that has done so much good for so many others. From the friendships it has created to the donations it has made (the UH softball braclets and donation drive at recent UH softball games come to mind at the moment.)
I’m very glad this blog will “live on” at the new Star-Advertiser website, but I will always remember where this “community” got its start…
I also want to give a shout out to all the people that worked so hard on a daily basis to bring Hawaii (and the world) The Honolulu Advertiser. You are a classy group of professionals and I’m happy for those moving onto the Star-Advertiser and very hopeful for those that will take another path.

I felt for UW on that call. It was by the book I guess, BUT DUMB judgement. Some ump trying for make tarantaran on national TV.

#128 Brew how come we don’t have a Golden Corral in Hawaii? i took a team up to New Mexico about 9 years ago and we ate at the GC. at that time i think we paid something like $8. there was a lot of different food. they also had the biggest steak i’ve ever seen. must have been almost a yard around. they would slice it and ask what piece you wanted. just as well. they probably would have the fine print saying Hawaii 14.99.

Kazz unlike baseball, in sb once the ball is in the circle the runner has to commit, either direction, can’t change direction and she must complete the move. Once she turned to third, she was suppose to go directly to the bag without juking, dancing, head fake, etc, and in her case, she moved back sideways to third and had a slight pause before taking her last step to the bag.

Kendall UA did not score a run in the 3 previous world series games dating back to last year. The last two UA games ended in mercy rule against UA, 14-0 against Georgia last year and 9-0 against Tennessee this year.
I tell ya this broad Smith is really a no class act, all she does is tell everybody that the kids make this mistake or that mistake what a jerk. I’d like to see her take one to the mouth, sorry I’m not usually this mean but dam she deserves a good smack.
UA was 0-2 last world series without scoring a run, and coach Candrea is the one complaining about composite bats.

Kazz, Pomai and the rest of us who watch UH sb, after watching this umpire crew in the UDUB-UA game, we can not complain about umpires at UH games. LOL big time 🙂 🙂
168 Pomai, i agree but when she was bad mouthing Hawaii and its home runs, we won. she was kind of stifled during the game that we lost. the other broadcasters during the UCLA game usually cut her off or changed the subject and praised Hawaii and its power.

The big difference if that UH is the only school with a home-and-home deal with the team they are playing in their home opener. The other 3 WAC schools you listed will not play those teams at home…but they will get about $1 million each for playing those games.

Rules should only be changed if most are not able to comply with them. If rules are changed for a small minority who cannot comply with them then it becomes a special interest rule change.
SMU is giving a camp today in East Texas, about 120 miles away from their campus. Reinebold’s twitter indicates that a lot of players from East Texas are attending their camp and hoping for a scholarship offer.
So, it would apparently be legal with the NCAA for UH to give camps on neighbor islands…that would give UH a chance to evaluate recruits from that island all at once and get earlier offers to recruits from there. Instead of losing recruits from Maui to USC or Colorado, maybe an early evaluation and the bonding that occurs in camps would get UH to lock down the top recruits from neighbor islands.
The other benefit of camps is that it creates future fans of the team. Prospects that get to know the coaches are more likely to follow UH games closer, which can create a whole new generation of fans.
If schools can go far away for camps, I’m still holding out for my dream that UH would offer camps in Southern California and Northern California to take recruiting to the next level.

You asked for lawyers to chime in on the Big 12 feasibility and I don’t think that anybody did so…I’m not a lawyer but I’ll try to give my take.
The question was whether or not the Big 12 would keep their AQ spot, TV contracts, and bowl agreements if the 6 teams left for the Pac-10. My feeling is that the precedent has already been set by the Big East.
The last time the Big East got raided, they lost the teams that were arguably (I had to use that word since it is the blog topic today) their best football teams. They went down to *5* football playing schools. They kept their AQ spot, their bowl agreements, *and* their TV contract. They also kept their NCAA basketball credits, which guaranteed BIG money for 6 years.
If the 6 teams leave for the Pac-10 and Nebraska leaves for the Big 10 (it appears that the Big 10 only wants Nebraska and doesn’t want Missouri), then the Big 12 will have 5 members. If they can get credible teams such as TCU, Louisville, Utah, BYU, Memphis, Houston, and BSU (those 7 teams could happen), they would probably still pass the AQ requirements by the BCS.
So, I’m not a lawyer but the precedent that the Big East provides seems to indicate to me that the Big 12 wouldn’t necessarily be dead if they lose a lot of teams due to realignment.

Living here in so. cal. Mr Wooden’s passing is a huge event. I didn’t realize the extent of his teachings. He was a great coach but, he was an even better teacher and human.
WOW Good Folks I am so “HONORED” that Pomai, Brew 808, 808 Ike, Da Punchbowl Kid and Steve M will regift the autograph book to me in HONOR of “Coach” as he is affectionally known here to all of us that watched his “GREAT” UCLA Teams played as I was tuned in to every Bruin game that kept me motivated to play basketball and play the game with all out effort, discipline and respect.
Coach Wooden is an ICON here in LA and at the age of 14 a 9th grader at the time I got picked to play at Camp Clutch sponsored by Jerry West and Willie Naulls as they sent us BUSES to travel us to Claremont College and play against the BEST middle school talent in all of Los Angeles.
It was 7 GREAT days of fundamental basketball, scrimmages and the BEST H.S. Coaches to coach us with room and board / 3 meals a day “FREE” as I was in seven heaven having this unique opportuinity being a disadvantage youth from Compton California. Meeting Jerry West my “IDOL” at the time as he came over to ALL of us and shaked our hands for attending as I was “shaking” with excitement !
On the 3rd day we had a “SPECIAL” guest to talk to us as the Clairemont gym was filled to capacity as I notice all the cameras in attendance as I was wondering what person could draw this much excitement as it was John Wooden himself with Jerry West and Willie Naulls doing the introduction as ALL of us players stood up and gave him a standing ovation as I was “AWE STRUCK” !
Just listening to him talk about discipline, character building, repetition and choosing players from the audience to demonstrate proper dribbling, defensive slides and shooting the bank shot you can here a “PIN” drop as we were taken with so much pride that this Giant of a Coach will come down and give us the fundamentals as at age 14 I was truly bless to be part of this wonderful basketball Camp that propelled me to excell in basketball and academics !
Finally before he departed he asked ALL of us to take off our shoes and socks as it was so fast that we obeyed his “EVERY” command as all you could see was bare feet and un strung converse sneakers as we all got to keep everything from our shirts, shorts and gym bag when Camp was finish !
Coach took us through the importance of putting on our socks and lacing up our shoes as I did not know until his passing how “BIG” of an experience that was as MANY of his players from the past has commented on radio and television of that experience alone as I reflect with so much appreciation and respect that I had of that moment with him and ALL of my Southern California Middle School Basketball Players of 1972 !
I still today have his “pyramid of success” as Jalal Hazzard, Walt Hazzard son has been ‘INSTRUMENTAL’ towards me in developing the playground that I have sponsored by LA84 Foundation as his Executive status has been supportive towards me in bringing quality athletics to South Central Los Angeles !
Mahalo for taking the time to read my long post on Coach John Wooden and Mr. Tsai for offering his book as selling it is “out of the question” but keeping it in fond memories and remembering the time when I actually listen to this GIANT of a man teach me to tie my shoes and properly to wear my white socks !

Coach talked about team building and the Pyramid of Success. I’m sure I still have my notes from his talk. His principles apply to life. Thanks, Coach!

Everything I read past several days is the possibilities of the BIG12/PAC10 meetings next week and the scavenging/demise of the BIG12.
The leftovers no longer belonging to a BCS conference, let alone to any conference of significance.

just reminiscing about yesteryear. mostly for the younger sports fans and the older ones can reminisce along with me. did you know that when Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) was a freshman, freshmen weren’t allowed to play varsity sports? Lew’s freshman team beat the varsity team in a pre-season game. the varsity either won the NCAA championship that year or the year before. the NCAA made a new rule with Alcinder in mind that dunking was not allowed. that’s why when you see tributes to John Wooden with Alcinder playing he either lays it up, drops it down, or banks his shot. he also had a unstoppable “sky” hook shot.
Argh…. a delay! 🙄 Okay – ‘zona pitcher didn’t want to start off the game “in a hole”…. 😆 😈 😆

Game report,..Hawaii got handled by ASU. Blair, ASU’s ace, who was 11-0, was a stud in keeping the Hawaii bats silent, except for giving up a solo shot by Jeff Van Doornum. Slaats didn’t have it and got chased after the second inning. Capaul did a good job in long relief. The ASU 2nd baseman stood out…he had at least 3 hits and was a gold glove out there. The road just got tougher with next game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. when the temps should be approaching 110. Hawaii has to beat San Diego again to get another crack at ASU and they have to win twice tomorrow to have a chance at the championship game. If they make it to Monday, I’ll be there. And I did talk to one of the dads of one of Hawaii’s pitchers and he confided in me that Coach Trap isn’t very popular with the kids….hmmmphh

Mahalos Everyone! for the well wishers. I was astonished that JMxxxx knew it was my birthday! The Tsaiko Ohana is truly loving and has a memory many times better than mine.
I may be missing another milestone KK, but I did have a fabulous day. Despite my strenuous protestations, Betty grabbed our daughter and went shopping for my birthday dinner. Earlier they had gifted me with a UH logo golf-bag that I had really wanted despite only playing 3-5 times a year. I wasn’t allowed in the kitchen, but I could hear Betty giving directions to two young helpers with pots and pans clanging in the background. When I sat down for dinner, a platter was brought out that floored me! There was a huge succulent lobster tail, sliced pieces of tender steak, extra large leg sections of sweet king crab, and jumbo pieces of Betty’s special butter garlic shrimp. The richest man in the world could not have feasted better than I did. After the cake was cut and eaten, I was a bit agitated that Betty had to go lie down because she was so tired from all her efforts. But, I also understood that when she makes her mind up on something, do not stand in her way!!! I can only give thanks for the immense blessings that come my way…among them Betty and the Tsaiko Ohana.

went to the KKall tonite. i met a lot of the Tsaikos for the first time. i really had a great time. wow you guys can really sing. i wanted to sing too but you guys weren’t drunk enough. and all the women there were very beautiful. the food was great too! as good a time that i had, nothing beats the time that i had cheering for Na Wahine Softbows. i’m so happy and proud of them. hope to see the Tsaikos again just as the softbows will rise again! it’s not over till it’s over. the blog will live on with a different name. thank you ST. i really enjoyed being a small part of your blog and met many nice people sharing a common interest.
Ralph, mahalo for introducing me to all the Tsaikos. there are more to meet and all i have to do is ask you, “who dat?”

Fun had by all! Sad to know that the Advertiser is closing down and that it was sold for half of what Gannett paid for it. These are hard economic times. Hope everyone comes out on the other side intact & even more successful than they are now.

Congratulations once again to the Wahine softball team. They are definitely the winners in my book. Non BCS team from a non BCS school with non BCS money. Traveled the farthest, traveled the longest, and went toe to toe with the best of the best. Hold your heads up high and cherish the moments that you have just experienced, for they will be the stories that you will share with your family and friends for years to come.
Thanks to Kazz, Slugger, Pomai, and the rest of the Tsai-kos for being behind the ladies from the very beginning.
Good to see all of the Tsai-kos at the Karaoke Kall tonight, thanks to all of the coordinators of the event.

Closing of the HA, the continuation of the BaseBows’ journey, and the end of the season for the Wonderful Wahine Warriors.
So many accomplishments and memories. They have all gone so far. For some, it is the end of a long journey. For others it will continue. Whatever your particular case, move on with grace and pride in your successes and achievements. Know you have reset the bar for those who will follow.

They, Texas State, UT-San Antonio, Montana, UC-Davis, Cal Poly, and others will be among those considered, but any team moving up to D-IA from D-IAA will need a few transition years and will count as a D-IAA team even when they are a WAC member for at least one year. That could hurt the bowl eligibility of some WAC teams.
