Feat of Clay

Charles Clay, who made a successful transition from receiver to safety, has been awarded a scholarship for the spring semester.

01

Clay is a 2009 Hilo High graduate. He was at SMU for two years, redshirting in 2009 and appearing in 12 games in 2010. He then transferred to UH, where he was granted immediate eligibility because of his status as an initial un-recruited walk-on transferring between schools. Clay began his UH career as a receiver before moving to defense in the middle of the 2011 season. This past year, he played in all 12 games, recording 29 tackles, four deflections and four breakups. He was key down the stretch when the Warriors went primarily with a nickel defense.

* * * * *

The Warriors will see if the transition can go the other way when Bubba Poueu-Luna moves from safety to wide receiver in the spring.

Poueu-Luna, who has endured several ailments in his five semesters at UH, was the starting safety in the 2012 opener against USC. With the emergence of Clay and Marrell Jackson, the Warriors would like to see if Poueu-Luna is a better fit on offense.

* * * * *

Former UH defensive end/linebacker Paipai Falemalu will play in the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game on Jan. 11 in Tucson.

He joins former UH punter Alex Dunnachie.

Also, California defensive lineman Aaron Tipoti, a Word of Life graduate, will participate in the game.

* * * * *

Word on the boulevard is offensive lineman Stan Hasiak, a Kapolei High graduate who played at UCLA and Mount San Antonio College, remains interested in the Warriors. Hasiak still needs to clear eligibility hurdles to play anywhere in 2013. He would be a one-and-done player.

* * * * *

Linebacker Kendrick Van Ackeren, fullback Jared Leaf and defensive back Mike Sellers are expected to learn by next weekend whether they will be transferring. Each requested a release to explore other options.

* * * * *

By the way, it’s Peter Pale’s birthday today.

That’s two mention in two days (or two in 20 years).

Happy birthday, Mr. Pale.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    We need all the help we can get – but a one year player? If we have the room and the absolute necessity and cannot get a high schooler with 4-years eligibility that would help us in the long run.

    Mental block on Leaf.

    Make Hasiak go door to door convincing Hawaii prep footballers to stay home and play for the home team. If he does a great job, give um a spot. Lol

  14. papajoe2 December 30, 2012 9:28 am

    tommui, I think if he doesn’t take up a scholarship, then it would be ok. If he would be on scholarship, then I definately would rather have a freshman to devolope. Didn’t SH get into some kind of trouble on the mainland? Got to investigate before making a decision. Otherwise, if the no scholarship mentioned above and off field trouble turns out ok then welcome to 2nd chance U. Gotta trust da coach’s decision.

    Good Morning tommui and Warrior fans.

    Can finally get out today. No Bowl games. Great, exciting games yesterday. A little disappointed the Beavers lost in the last 2 minutes to Texas. Roman looked good yesterday.

    GO WARRIORS!

    Hasiak can walk-on if he really wants to play…I wouldn’t waste a scholarship and there may be others more deserving on the team (like Clay) who have paid their dues.

    UH has had its share of “one and done” transfers throughout its history. Golden Richards (BYU) comes to mind. He played one season for UH in 1972 after some academic problems rendered him ineligible at BYU, where he led the nation in punt returns. Richards played well, but injured his knee and was done for the season. I think he withdrew from UH and returned to his home in Utah to await the NFL Draft and eventually was a second round pick by Dallas. Like many former NFL players, Richards had problems adjusting to life after football.

    Other one & done local walkons, Kamalu Umu, Parker Paredes, Kaeo Alo, etc. Local boys stoked to play once under the lights of Halawa & in front of family & friends.

  42. Former UH Athlete December 30, 2012 12:09 pm

    Congrats for Clay… he’s earned it. I wish Falemalu good luck at the all-star game. He may need to transition to OLB to make it at the next level. He probably best fits as an OLB in a 3-4 scheme. I think he’s quick enough to do that.

    Sellers leaving will be a loss in the depth department in the secondary. UH is solid on its starters but if anyone gets hurt, that’s when they’ll miss Sellers. Van Ackeran leaving is no big deal. UH has a ton of good, young players and it’s probably the deepest unit on the team. Leaf leaving is not a big deal either. Justin Vele has pretty much locked up the FB spot for the next few years.

  43. Former UH Athlete December 30, 2012 12:32 pm

    Can’t wait to see Ron Fields in action in 2013. Huge pickup by Chow. Very good in run support. Solid tackler, and shows good hands. In his video, he’s mostly playing softer zone coverage so not a ton of individual route coverage being shown. Most of the highlights show him reacting and attacking the ball/WR once the ball is in the air. Doesn’t look to be as physical as Edwards in bump-n-run, but again, not much shown in video. If Edwards, leaves for the NFL, at least Fields looks like he’ll be a quality replacement as a kick returner.

    If Edwards stays, then UH will have the best pair of CBs in the MWC and probably the best secondaries in the west coast. Edwards, Hardy-Tuliau, M. Jackson, Fields will be excellent.

  44. BigWave96744 December 30, 2012 12:36 pm

    Returning CB’s:

    Seniors Mike Edwards, Tony Grimes

    Juniors Dee Maggitt

    Sophs Brian Clay, Nequan Phillips

    RS Frosh Chas Bajet, Matt Mendiola

    TrFr Anthony Pierce

    Transfers ???, Ronnie Fields, JT Turner

Are you positive concerning the source?|What i don’t realize is if truth be told how you’re no longer actually a lot more neatly-liked than you might be right now. You are very intelligent.

  46. Bowwar December 30, 2012 12:45 pm

    How u figgah??? With Andy Reid apparently “out” as the Eagles head coach, the two names being mentioned as replacements are Chip Kelly (Oregon) and Dirk Koetter…I guess Koetter is “good enough” for the Eagles and not for UH??? I still think we should have hired him as HC versus Chow.

  47. BigWave96744 December 30, 2012 12:51 pm

    Wonder what the minimum salary Dirk would have demanded? 500,600, 1M???

  48. Derek December 30, 2012 12:52 pm

    My New Years Wishes. Sign Masters, Saint Juste, and Randall. That should complete the class.

  49. ai-eee-soos December 30, 2012 12:57 pm

    … no can afford to pay Dirk Koetter …

    besides, he probably would be a “one and done” deal.

    besides, besides – if he really wants to coach in the MWC – the Nevada job is open.

    let’s see if he applies…..

    .

  50. Old School Dave December 30, 2012 1:05 pm

    The NFL is better for some coaches. They aren’t responsible or accountable for the behavior of their players, unlike college coaches. That’s a fact of life.

  51. BigWave96744 December 30, 2012 1:11 pm

    Returning safeties

    Seniors JHT, Charles Clay

    Juniors Michael Martin, Bubba Poueu-Luna (if he returns the defense)

    Sophs Marrell Jackson, Josh Donovan, Ryan Pasoquen, Dante Johnson

  52. Derek December 30, 2012 1:48 pm

    Heard Washington’s new QB coach is Marques Tuiasosopo. The last time UW went to the Rose Bowl was when Tuiasosopo was playing and Rick Neuheisal was coach. Unless Sarkisian does better he might be gone soon. Under his watch UW has never won more than 8 games in a season. They have very high expectations over there and they are renovating their stadium.

    Hope Chow fills Lee’s vacancy with a good one.

  53. Chicken Grease December 30, 2012 2:49 pm

    Jim Tressell should go on over to the NFL, tell the NCAA and colleges, “f_-k your stupid, insane, Orwellian selective rules.” He’s basically doing the same job at Akron as Donovan started doing; after being high profile in sports, the hell wants to do that kinda’ job?

    2nd Tressell reference in the same # of a days from a Grease. 🙂

  56. kapakahi December 30, 2012 3:39 pm

    No problem at all with one and done players….’cuz players always play with the risk of injury…..never knowing whether they might be playing their last game…..like what happened with Hanohano & Sai this past season.

  57. Bleed Green and White December 30, 2012 4:23 pm

    (#46 Bowwar)

    Even if he were dirt cheap, heck, free even, Dirk Koetter was 100% un-hireable at the time UH was looking to sign a new head football coach.

    The Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State changed the landscape of college athletics. Put a scare into administrators. And Koetter, while head coach at Arizona State before his stint with the NFL’s Jaguars, well, his tenure left too many skeletons in the closet.

    Players with sex abuse and / or rape charges on his watch were simply too much to overcome.

    Damn good coach though!

    So when do we go?

    WISHING ALL A HAPPY, HEALTHY, BLESSED AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

  67. Derek December 30, 2012 6:02 pm

    Tony Romo has earned the nickname ” The Big Mistake”. Every year, something always happens, whether it’s a fumble or an interception and the Cowboys fall short, again. Credit the Redskins, they have a very good scheme and they have big time playmakers. Redskins at home against the Seahawks. Terrific matchup. Hard to choose between them right now. Packers should revenge Vikings at Lambeau.

  68. 3-Prong December 30, 2012 6:37 pm

    Congratulations to the Wahine basketball team. Although they lost BY ONE POINT this evening, they controlled the Alabama Crimson Tide on defense which I never thought I’d see happen.

    The Wahine are on the road later this week against Fullerton and Riverside – and wouldn’t it be great if both the men’s and women’s teams make the other Big West teams collectively fear what’s going to happen to them?

    Men’s volleyball 2013 season starts this week while the men’s and women’ stickball teams’ official pre-season getready begins next week.
