Warriors get three more commitments
The Warriors today received oral commitments from:
• Clark Evans, a JC All-America tight end from Cerritos College.
• Gus Lavaka, a lineman from Kearns High in Utah.
• Ronald Fields, a cornerback from College of San Mateo.
* * * * *
No rest for the recruiters.
The UH coaches will be back on the road tomorrow, in search of more prospects.
There are two more recruiting weekends remaining before signing day on Feb. 1.
* * * * *
If you can tear yourself away from the NFL games today, check out the Toronto Argonauts’ combine/tryout at Roosevelt High today. The CFL has been very good to Hawaii players.

Repetition is the key to men’s volleyball, and, it seems, players of that sport always get better with time. Examples: John Matt Bender, Mauli‘a LaBarre and Joshua Walker. The 2012 volleyball Warriors are young. J.P Marks, Nick West, Brook Sedore, Johann Timmer and Taylor Averill will be very good by the end of the season.

Happy anniversary to Kekoa and Diana.

Belated birthday wishes to Calvin from Kona.
And to Keri Endo (the real reason guys go to the Na Koa luncheons).
And special birthday wishes to Faye Wai.
Go Warriors!
ST,
So no one committed?

Happy Birthday to all the B-Day peeps!

When I die, you’re all invited to my funeral. We’ll be catering through Willows. (So, sorry, Fukuya’s.)
You’re just trying to “Curry” favor!
So does anyone know who we can expect to see at the Argonauts tryouts? Last week there was a bunch of talk about Colt being in town and that he should go to the tryouts. Is he?
Life is about seizing the opportunities that lie before you. Let’s hope Colt realizes that this is an opportunity and not just “settling” and shows up.
Good luck to all former Warriors who are participating.
I know I’m supposed to be watching football, but it’s so hard to pull away from Law&Order reruns on Sunday mornings.
Playoff time!
Ravens vs Texans
Lewis vs Team D
Rice vs Foster
Flacco vs …..
….who is their QB?
I might check out the tryouts.
Or I might stay home and watch Law & Order reruns.
Decisions, decisions …
I remember attending the combine and watching Flacco. He could fling it, but was very inaccurate that day.
That was the day I met my hero — John Clayton.
Happy anniversary to Diana & Kekoa!
Happy Birfday to Calvin from Kona!
Happy Birfday to Faye Wai! We missed you guys last year in Seattle and Vegas!!!
…but with his collegiate helmet it was easy for the NFL scouts to think he was from a big-time program. 🙄
Houston draws first blood.
Will that be all the scoring needed for the W?
ST. I like the OG re runs, Lenny had great one liners
John Clayton? I can understand the adulation…there is a resemblance! 😆
I don’t mind Flacco as a player, but I will always resent him for the fact that he drew away so much attention from Colt. Colt’s unbelievable accuracy at the combine was completely ignored because everybody was so excited about how far Flacco threw it.
stupid!
boneheaded play
Kev1
Very true.
mikesmith:
Lenny was funny.
When we were in New York, we saw the Jerry Orbach Theater.
I am confident that the team will improve as the season goes along like previous teams under wade. Setting and serving need to get better! welch needs to heal up fast too.

How come all these people born on Sunday?
good game on nfl.
Morning everyone. Bowling day. got to get it together.
Texans’ Connor Barwin (sp?).
Recall that he was a DE who didn’t need “help” from a Hawaii OT to make him look like an All-Conference performer at Aloha Stadium.

Aloha Coach K Welcome!!!

The Queen is being treated to an NFL playoff game this morning compliments of KHON. After all the post Holidays shopping she did, it’s all I can afford!
The theme later this eve will involve her ‘fave’ Lobster tails. I managed to *liberate* a case of those crusty buggahs from Costco. I’ll supervise the cooking process and taste for maximum quality. I’ll let you know how it all works out Tom.
To all our Tsaiko ohana, we thank you all for another great year of football, fun, family, friendship, and food.
Today we begin our 44th year of married bliss. I could not have chosen a better partner to share my life with. Even when our competitive sports years came to an end, we still have awesome memories of chicken-skin moments.
For those of you who know Diana, you know how truly devoted she is to allowing me to go over the edge for UH Sports. For that, I am eternally blessed.
So as we push forward into this new era in Warrior football, let’s all renew our enthusiasim for OUR team!
GO WARRIORS…your Championships await you!
A lot of recruits take the Hawaii trip already knowing they will not sign just because it’s Hawaii. I think Pennell was one of those players if he did come. If you had a choice to visit Nebraska, Arkansas, Alabama, Arizona, El Paso and Hawaii what would be our guarantee trip? Shoganae (hope i spelled it right). Our reruting budget can go toward guys who really want to come here, but you never know. We definitely need more athleticism upfront and guys that can get after the QB and chase down RB’s.
Good morning everyone!
Happy Anniversary Kekoa & Diana !!!
Happy Birthday Queen Faye !!!
Very nice Kekoa.
Have a terrific day you lovebirds! 🙂
仕様がない shiyoganai (does not meet industry standards)… no value, no use, of no use
仕方がない shikataganai (no way of doing it) can’t be helped…
Kekoa and Diane! Congratulations on your 44th! May you have at least 54 more!
Congratulations Diana and kekoa!
What time should I bring the drawn butter?
And a very happy birthday to Faye, Keri, and Calvin … and you birthday lurkers out there!
Koakane –
Sweety’s been nursing a sore knee the last few. It was still bothering her, so the game time decision was no-go. 🙁 We definitely gonna go when her leg gets better.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy Anniversary Kekoa and Diana! May you have many more.
Warriors definitely played better last night than on Friday. The passing was better, leading to a more balanced attack. Next week’s matches at Pepperdine will be a test.
Is Penitito Faalologo at UH?
Fonua looks like a quality recruit:
http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/sportsnewspremium/20120115__Kahukus_Fonua_commits_to_UH.html?id=137371743&c=n
DPK,
Yikes.. knee injuries can take a long time to heal… I hope hers isn’t too serious. I found that sleeping with a something wrapped around my knee helped the accelerate the healing process and minimize the discomfort when I got up each morning.
It looks like CB Ronald Fields is a Warrior. HOpefully Fehoko Fanaika is next
mih,
keeping the theme
Niners-no-tame-ni. ..
Go Giants! (there, I said it. 👿 )
65…yup
KEKOA #52 – very happy for you two. And the lobsters sounds good – but watch out for gout!!!
My Lois and I celebrated our 50th last year.
LOCAL RECRUITING has gotten so much better i hope were still recruiting samoa though. I think we have high quality on our DEFENSE we have mike edwards who played well, hardy tuliau, mike sellers seemed pretty good, ART LAUREL was just amazing last year, i think yap is gonna do good, an now with Benny from kahuku i think we have a chance to be a hard hitting defense. I dont know what to expect from our offense i know we got talent at receivers, running back an qb but i dont know if they’ll be able to operate the WCO fluently its a exciting year an i hope they are ready come time we play usc! But I believe in norm chow! Go Warriors
Rasu Begasu’s Celebration of Life & Karaoke Call

An interesting combination of tradition and Lifestyle… las vegas’s (Rasu Begasu) Celebration of life gathering will also be a Japanese-English-Hawaiian karaoke Call. Stop by and truly celebrate his contributions to the Tsai-kos…in the manner he would want.
The announcement/invitation from his sister, Elizabeth:

Lets go Giants!!
The biggest recruiting grounds that opened up with the NC era? The LDS church.
We just ‘wen scoa big time.
BIK
happy birthdays and congratulations to all!
Still need a big kicker in my opinion. Interesting who will end up being the starting QB. Not sure Graves is the answer for the Pro style offense. Chow might have to tweak the offense.
Interesting Super Bowl potential matchups. New England vs NY Giants would be 2007 all over again. Green Bay making it again would be trying for a repeat. SF vs Baltimore would be the one I want to see in the “harbaugh” bowl. Defense wins. It could be fate if John and Jim Harbaugh actually make it. That’s history folks.
Out of subject with all the football news going on. Does anyone know what is the status of Amber Kaufman in UH women’s track. I know she had surgery and I thought she has one more year of eligibility in track as NCAA champion in the high jump.
Nobody really cares about the Wahine basketball program. I watch, but it’s sad. So many turnovers. The players give their best, but the talent level is not what it should be. Coach Dana is on the hot seat.
77. Besides Women’s Volleyball, it’s pretty hard to get into Women’s sports in general. I’m sure most of us will watch some Big East basketball during the week. But when Uconn women play Baylor or something, not too many people will get that excited to watch a game between 2 powerhouses.
Howzit Tsaikos everyswhere.
Happy anniversity to Kekoa an da Queen!
and Happy Birthday all you good looking peeps. 😀
okay, now we got some serious football afoot.
IHMO Coach Dana is past the hot seat. She already lost Galdeira and Awa to Wazzou. I really wanted her to succeed but if JD keeps her past this year it would be surprising.
Good afternoon!
Happy anniversary to Queen Diana (watch out for your backhand — really swift!) and her lucky loyal subject, Kekoa!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Happy birthday to Queen Fay, too!
Whoo-hoo!!!
we have a women’s basketball team?
Well, besides the Wahine volleyball I do enjoy watching the softball team. Coolen has recruited well. I’m strongly considering getting volleyball season’s tickets-Wahine I mean. Softball is free so it’s great.
Jeezy, number 78. I find it easy and enjoyable to watch women’s sports. Considering how far we’ve come over the years. Soccer, VB, softball, yes and even basketball. A lot of people, men and women, support women’s collegiate athletics.
So what, would Coach Dana have to “retire”?
BIK
boy o boy. NYG puttin it to GB. imagine dat.

From our news corresspondent in Samoa:

That was HUGE.!!!!!!
Thanks Kekoa.

UH has a contract with the MWC…but what happens if the MWC no longer exists? Does UH have a guaranteed spot in a new conference with the MWC and CUSA schools? Could the travel subsidies be decreased?

Uh oh, looks like I’m gonna have to start the Trash talking with all you 49er fans… 🙂
Interesting to see the TV ratings for the bowl games. The big-money bowls get the highest TV ratings it appears. The Hawaii Bowl gets pretty decent TV ratings, especially since neither team was a big TV draw.
http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2012/01/13/Media/Bowl-ratings/Bowl-Viewership.aspx
It was great to hear about Benny Fonua’s commit and it appears that UH is getting other commits also from this weekend.
not singing no song, but that guy dandy don is singing one now upstairs. “the party’s over”.
wow . . . I was wrong. What happened to the pack? Oh well, I think the Niners are a better match for the Giants than the packers. Should be a heck of a game. Go Niners!
not taking sides, but how can you have 1 play, complete for 11 yds and use 0.00 sec???
o boy o boy. the singing outta Green Bay is sounding pretty good for New Yorkers.
me, I like Barry Markowitz’s singing. Go Coach chow. Go team Hawaii. Go Team Polynesia.
Go kick buttski.
I’m just loving da vibes outta our gang!
Heck, we coulda had da guvanah for Strength and Conditionining Coach? I’m loving it!~
Extremely well played game by the Giants all around. Next Week should be fun!
i guess the old nfl axiom still holds true, when a very, very good offense meets a very, very good defense, the defense will win.
congratulations to the gmen and birds. will only have 1 animal left. sheesh!!!!
now if i believe the old nfl axiom of an excellent offense meeting an excellent defense, with the defense winning, then the birds should do it. the miners and welders is going to be close, but the welders will be favorites.
ok, back to yard work.
Cheer up, folks. UH just got three more commitments.
That’s six for Chow in a week, if you’re scoring at home.
If we get the CB Fields does that mean no Turner?
Graham:
If Turner does what he’s supposed to do in the classroom, he’ll be arriving this summer.
Just LOVING the recruiting news!!!!
shucks, we got da coaches cracking da … uh…. you no. 😀
busting da britches!
squeezing da pants outta da recruits.
i am LOVING THE NEWS!!!
Welcome to the new commits!
Patience, patience. With my damaged right thumb it takes me longer to type.
ST – #120 – still????
No commitment from Big Fehoko?
Nice gets!
Clark Evans – really nice feet, run blocking is solid. Can find and sit down in space nicely. Can see why he’s an A-A.
Wondering if Fehoko is gonna commit. He’s a definite beast. Anyone know if we got any chance to land him?
gus lavaka sounds like a very talented multi-sport athlete. wrestling, basketball, football, and rugby.
he’s also a huge kid at 6’4″ 300 lbs.
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/tribpreps/53051609-190/lavaka-wrestling-basketball-kearns.html.csp?page=1
Jm:
Yep. Still can’t bend the top part. Pretty sad when people have to open jars for me.
Fehoko will be a while. He’s visiting Kansas next week.
Hmm. Kansas or Oz.
Wow Kansas?? Dang how are we gonna compete with them?
d1:
In high school, when he was a QB, Evans was described as: The next Tebow?
OK, important to know there was a question mark at the end. But it’s always a good philosophy to recruit former QBs.
Wasn’t Fehoko offered by Utah as well? Chances seem slim to none.
how bout dalis bruce?
Don’t think you can get palusami in Kansas.
Not even through take-out.
Well it’s Kansas who wants to live there over Hawaii??
An hour ago, folks were lamenting the lack of news. Somebody even said he was going to work in the yard.
Let’s not be greedy.
Yup he can’t get palusami’s. But what he can get is a chance to be a part of and play at a Big time program.
Yeah you’re right. Can’t get to greedy
Happy with the commits. Now if we could land Jaydon Mickens or Davonte Neal!
I think Mickens was pictured in this week’s Sports Illustrated.
I think Evans could be a steal. He was probably under recuirted because of his speed or lack there of
Great news about the recruits. Evans looks beastly….
besides the big guys and the new commits….who else was here? heard conflicting reports about jeffrey coprich…was he ere or next week or none of the above.
sometimes a gf can hold back a guy from going where he wants to go
al: that was my feeling as well.
Al,
Are you implying Fehoko has a GF here? Or maybe possibly wants to come here?
okay you guys. first we was sqwaking about Uperesa not comiing, and then we got him.
and Barry tellz us him and Tony and Coach Chow gonna go Samoa. how amazing is dat?
and then we was sqwaking about summa da odda guyz not coming, and so far they coming.
and we getting alot of really blue blue chip recruits coming. A-A, and some big big buggaz.
I say to all you negativists. FOLLOW ME. 😀
sit down and wait your turn. who gives a rip about Kansas? we got winners coming to our team. we got a winning coach coming to our team. if da bruddaz no can see that, wish him m well and move on. We got a killer squad coming to town! tiy xBBIR SWBT Sr ibw,
Go Warriors!
😆
Usually in HS, QB=Athlete. 🙂
sometimes you just gotta wait fo da fatty partz to boil off da bone.
and da palusami, or however you spell its. i can cooks da stuffs. 😀
i know how fo do dat. and dats because I was raised wit da Polyz. and I can also make da
ak’e. 😀 cuz besides my odda talents, I been watching da aunties make da kine. 😆
you not going learn dat in Kansas!
he ain’t talkin bout fehoko.
and looking at Ronald Fields, just the name means tons in football. get plenty all stars wit dat name. just that alone is gonna motivate him to greatness.
UH is after a tight end from American Samoa.
I wonder if our contingent of women volleyball players from Los Al helped with the recruiting of Evens? Emily and Jane must have been classmates of his.
Hmmm Gus Lavaka any relation to UH commit Sione Lavaka?
It’s an interesting approach:
Coordinators in charge of game-planning.
Other assistants are out there recruiting.
read an article that clark evans is actually a mid-year transfer. is it too late for him to enroll for this spring semester?
So who teaches the position specific lessons to players?
Hmm..
Lots of trick play potential in the upcoming season with Iosefa and Evans in there…
RONALD FIELDS.. a 6’2″ corner with 4.4 speed.. nice.
and
GUS LAVAKA 6’4″ 300 lbs… size and weight are good for the OL and he’ll be bigger and stronger as the years go by…
3 nice recruits…
How many total schollies do they have to work with this year?
ST – you going to Pro Day?
i no i no.
i’ve said it before. our coach is one smart pa’ke.
i been to Kansas, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon, California up an down, Colorado, Arizona…. to 48 of the States. East Coast. The Gulf. i choose Hawaii. why? because of the palusami.
our recruits gonna love us. cuz we are not fakes! and come join da Tsaikos. cuz we can cook! 😀 yup, we gonna woop some okole. 😀
In Coach Chow we trust!! Coach has gained so much respect not only from his successful past as a developer of great quarterbacks and because of his offensive acumen, but also by his communication skills and ability to gain people’s trust. This will payoff in recruiting more so in the future when he gets to know the HS coaches and players. Great going Norm!
Happy anniversary to Kekoa and Diana.
Happy birthday wishes to Faye Wai.
st, i was the one who said be patient cause everyday going get news about da warriors. just wen i said i going do yard work, you slide in sum more news. see, that’s why i said, no get excited because for the next two weeks going get news about da warriors. sum don’t have patience, but me i just cruising and enjoying the ride. anyway, thanks for the news. remind me to get you sum mochi.
ok, i wen do part of my yard work and now the kona wind is blowing and can see sum rain in the mountains, so quit for the day. get other days to complete, see how patience pays off.
I have learned some new issues from your web page about pcs. Another thing I’ve always assumed is that laptop computers have become an item that each family must have for some reasons. They provide convenient ways in which to organize households, pay bills, search for information, study, hear music and perhaps watch shows. An innovative approach to complete every one of these tasks is a mobile computer. These pc’s are portable ones, small, robust and convenient.
Waiting on the 2 QB prospects that Chow are targeting according to a previous post. Since Graham is red shirting the other 2 be best be eligible. Graves, Shutter, Spain, Higgins, Woolsey are in the mix. Assumming Godfrey is not here. Still looking for the Holy Grail!
All-America JC recognition means he’s a good player. Josh Leonard was a JC All American and a 4 star recruit. He was very good at UH. Evans looks like a player. The fact he played QB means he’s athletic and knows the nuances of the game. Good hands and good routes and feet. Looks like starting potential.
His current wife is white (I believe his first and second wives were too).Cheap Tera Gold
Stephen, I think the SA should post the UH commitments on the front page of the Sports Page. You are talking about selling and promoting the State’s only college football program. Don’t you think it would bode well to incoming prospects and future prospects. I found Fonua’s commitment on page 4 of the sports and I thought to myself this is not a good feeling for Fonua to see his name in the back page like he’s just another guy. Can you talk to your boss(es) about this. I think it’s important.
nice video…clark evans just reminded me of what we’ve been missing for awhile. must have got lost in the position change.
btw, who is that left tackle?
and that southpaw qb looked pretty good too.
I agree with Derek. and I also think that Barry’s writeup for Samoa should be on the front page of the Sports section.
167…i believe that one of those qb’s went elsewhere. so there be only one hs dude. but, you never know.
we got greg alexander the day before loi’s were inked.
no mattyboy…not here. but, don’t they all have gf’s at this age?
…and then sometimes a guy wants to get away from a gf.
Nice. Chow getting some good recruits. wonder what good young qb he after??
Getting the right auto repair gurus to perform in your car or truck may help you make sure that your car will get back again in good affliction.
Gus Lavaka according to numerous articles on the internet is a “super” athlete,(four sports), as a matter of fact; check him out!!!
With Darron Thomas declaring for the NFL draft, Oregon will have a new starting QB. St. Louis’ Marcus Mariota will be in the mix as a redshirt freshman. He’s got a size, the speed, and the arm. I hope he does well. I can see Mariota run that Duck Offense very well. He’s well suited to their type of spread offense.

NFL and AFC championships set with very interesting plots. If you are talking about marquee QBs then Manning and Brady are the favorites with the Giants and Patriots. The best 2 defenses are the 49ers and the Ravens. Who will win? Offense or Defense? Are the home teams in the conference championships have the edge? If both home teams win that would not be a surprise. If one road team wins, that’s the NFL, very possible. If 2 road teams win that would be very unusual. So I will go with one home team and one road team. I will go with defense. SF at home and Baltimore on the road. Can you say “HARBAUGH BOWL”!
Mickens and Coprich would be really great gets for Hawaii…We’ll need speed on the outside and in the backfield to run Chow’s offense.

NaMaSu OC job – in case anyone’s interested … ( I think Crowton’s headed for Utah )
Saturday, January 14, 2012
In a text message from Walker, three coordinator finalists are identified
A text message from New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker identified three finalists for the Aggie offensive coordinator position: former Kent State associate head coach Jerry McManus; former Maryland offensive coordinator Gary Crowton; and former Hawaii offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich.
McManus’ hiring would make sense, considering that he worked under previous coordinator Doug Martin. In other words — if he runs the same system as Martin — the Aggies wouldn’t have to change systems or terminology. That would be an important factor.
Crowton has a world of experience — an offensive coordinator at the University of Maryland last year and also has head coaching experience at Louisiana Tech and Brigham Young. He has previous NFL coaching experience with the Chicago Bears and was an offensive coordinator at the University of Oregon and LSU.
Rolovich’s name has been in the mix for some time, a former University of Hawaii offensive coordinator who is familiar with third-year quarterback Andrew Manley.
Walker also noted in the text message, “I will have an answer on Monday.”
Kaui Hemmings is not Fred Hemmings’ daughter. She’s a Hart that’s married to a Hemmings.
Nice KHON sports report tonight. The first agenda on the sports was the announcement of the 3 UH commitments. The best part are the pictures of the players with their positions and stats, IN COLOR. Also, some highlights of the players. Second story was the Sony Open and Tadd Fujikawa. Last, the NFL playoffs. I think the priority was correct. I liked it. Watch tonight at 10 pm.
Any chance in getting John Ursua to UH? Is Katina in the program? Looking forward to seeing Samson Anguay fully healthy for next season. If really won the job as the starting punt returner in the spring last year, but hurt his knee and was gone for the season. Saw him play when he was at Campbell and this guy is a jet when he breaks the line of scrimmage, like a bolt of lightning and so quick. Just getting excited talking about it. He’s short, but put on some pounds and he might be a little Darren Sproles and that ain’t bad.
JOHNSON #186 You are correct.
In the Honolulu Advertiser 6/8/07 Michael Tsai wrote:
“Hemmings comes from well-established missionary and Native Hawaiian stock. Her grandmother was part of the Wilcox missionary family. Her grandfather was the late federal judge Martin Pence. And her stepfather is longtime state Sen. Fred Hemmings.”

Incidentally, Kaui was part of the Hemmings household when she was five but was formally adopted by Fred when she was 11-years old.
She is married, but not to a Flemming.
How many players will be dropped by Coach Chow? June jones cut a few of Von Appens players.
Howzit, everyone!
Happy Anniversary, Kekoa and Diana!
Happy birthday, birthday peeps!
Love hearing Warrior and Wahine news! Mahalo, ST, for doing what you do!
Appears the current coaching staff is adding more “gold” to the pot – 6 excellent recruits and more to follow!
It just amazes me how individuals can throw names around of players who UH may be able to recruit – I’m so out of the loop, but that’s OK – jus tagging along to support the Warrior program.
If Coach Chow decides to “drop” some players, he may have more scholarships available to recruit to his offensive/defensive schemes – is this correct? or, must he stick to the 25 limit?
The new OL recruits will be joining a host of 6′ 4″ 300#s + already in the program – bodes well for the future!
Kept watching TE play the past 2 days and wondered if UH will look like them.

koakane and tommui…on a rare afternoon in lihue town, the boss and i took in the “descendants”. now i see why it seemed to mirror many a true story here and there of how hawaiian lands got turned over to kamaaina families.
i’ve worked with one family who’s families lands are in similar scenario’s.
200
my question is, why should coach chow drop any of the current players on scholarship??? if he does, it won’t be till after spring ball, so why the guessing game??? all of the present players are warriors and if you think any of them are not deserving, do we need your 2 cents?? we don’t!!!!!
ahouse…two rules apply.
one, no more than 25 new scholarships may be awarded per year.
two, no more than 85 total scholarships may be effective per season.
if you had 27 scholarship candidates, only 25 may receive one even if your aggregate total scholarship would be less than 85. if you had 80 scholarship athletes going in to the new year you may only award 5 scholarships so as to not exceed the 85 cap.
That’s the pot calling the kettle white
i agree 100000.000%
Loose Lips Sink Ships
we got a great bunch of kids playing for da warriors and will be adding more, but sometimes i think i am stupid cause i question sum of the questions on the blog. example, how many scholies do we have to give out??? who gives a rat’s arse, the coaches are the one who is doing the recruiting, not us and they know how many they have. why do you have to know???? all i need to know is who the recruits are and how they will help da warriors.
so, if by natural attrition scholoarship players leave the program, then, it makes available another one to award if one of the two rules have not been exceeded.
for example, the scholarships now vacaed by ellis henderson and tyler grey will make available two more scholies to give this year.
if more leave the program whether by their own accord or not, more scholies will be availanle up to 25 for this year not to exceed the 85 max.
i have never heard it where chow was contemplating cutting a player or two.
the only thing would be if a student/athlete on scholie violated team rules, code of ethics, or failed to maintain the academic standards to remain in school.
al, the question of how many scholies is available in none of our business (wow, kind of blunt). coach chow and his crew know exactly whay they are doing and why can’t we just enjoy the recruiting process??? i love knowing that the next two weeks will be one of great interest and we will know the story ast st posts it.
chow score card…
recruits:
leo koloamatangi, ot 6’5″ 260 lb, all confetrence ot bay area
kiha sai, og/ot 6’4″ 300lb, 2nd team allstate, #4 rated prospect

no forget dustin adams
and j t turner
So the question of who plays at QB is your business? You wanted Moniz benched, you cried for it for several weeks. The only way he was going to be benched was if he was injured. Well, you got your wish.
Would’ve loved this kid Mickens but can’t get em all. Leaning to Ok State.
even tho we had a coaching change, coach chow and his assitants are doing a very good job trying to recruit. how the recruits turn out, we won’t know till they start playing, but the coaches are doing what they suppose to do and for that, i tip my hat to them.
duh! you are more stupid than stupid. i said to bench moniz, talk to him and explain to him why, then if he understands, put him back into the game. so shove it up your arse.

I hope Shutter works hard and gets the spot, but may the best man start. In Chow we trust.
211/212…was only pointing out the chow line.
Really entertaining post. I felt your article was truly entertaining. Thanks once again – I will drop by again.
not sure if justin alo is still on the board.
The list seems a bit long at QB. Guys going have to try fit in elsewhere or unfortunately transfer. Best of luck to you al!

# 217. Pride
Thomas Olds, OL, grayshirt.

Boy, the cupboard was left pretty empty. How did we allow it to get that bad?
Thank goodness it appears that recruiting will to be much improved under Coach Chow.
#225 doesnt mean that he is on the team though right? Was he a qualifier? In his case would Chow say whether he is on the team or not?
like coach said when he was hired. he’ll outwork everyone in the room. I am counting on that.
and I am counting on the Warriors to try to keep up with hm. especially the QBs. he’s gonna work em till their talents gonna match up with the physicality of the team he is trying to develop.
I cannot wait fo see wit my own eyes what he is developing for us!
#226 – Was he a grayshirt or a redshirt? I show him as being on the 2011 roster as a redshirt. I’m probably wrong.
Pride
and what about Loeffler OT?
2 solid DT would seem nice in this class
#229 – Can you please tell the offesnive line to bend down so that the QB’s can see.
heheheheheh
killing time till 10 pm KHON. i like see da pikchaz
#231 – I show him as a sophmore for 2012.
#230. Thomas Olds.
I thought it was posted on this blog that he attended “part-time” last fall,
same as Ellis Henderson.
ST knows – if he’s up, please clarify.
He is only going to be a sophomore
235. u right. he wen RSF 1st yr.
227.
Bad recruiting.
Most of our linemen didn’t qualify or were JC recruits. Leaving a big hole to fill now.
Remember Mack promising by 4th year, all his recruits will be in tact and we will be competing at a high level.
Happy now that the bleeding has stopped and Chow seems committed to keeping the best in state.
I still remember when Utah St. came in town, Gary Anderson first thing was to head out to Kahuku to visit Benny Fonua. At that point, Hawaii had 0 contact with him. We would never have had a chance under Mack.
we not so bare. get da NZ kid and da Aussie kid, muscleman.
but mostly, we get Coaches for bring out da physicality in da bumbooskaz.
#236 – I will put Olds down with the incoming freshmen in 2012.
I watched Harry B. on The Colbert Report last night and he looks unbelievab-ly great for 84!!! So whatever negative comment about the man…shov-e them!!!! cheapest wow gold
ok ok
neva mind da negative waves, Moriarty. always wit da negative waves. think Kelly’s Heroes. we’re in with Coach Chow, gone through da bank door. da floodgates is open. We getting da gold now boys!

Don’t forget Moses Samia,also we’ll
Have Calen Friel at DT also…
Here’s the big question to ask if you are a realist….
Is our walk on program a reflection of the actual program Miano ran or a product of bad recruiting?
I honestly think it’s a problem when kids who go un recruited walk on and consistently beat our players that were scouted, recruited, and offered a scholarship to play here.
Now if Norm Chow can combine great recruits with solid walk ons who can contribute in certain areas, Hawaii can be very good.
Wow – The Descendents won Golden Globes for Best Picture! Now should make movie on the Chow Football Dynasty & make millions for UH Athletics!!
why? He is sincerely one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.Buy Tera Gold
In the years to come it will be harder and harder to make the team as a walk on. If the local blue chip athletes do not come to Hawaii, Coach Chow will bring in very capable and talented players from elsewhere. He has the name recognition to be able to recruit very fine atheletes from outside of the state.
He will not recruit local atheletes just to say that he recruits Hawaii. He will offer the blue chippers. If they do not come, he will go elsewhere. He will not recruit athletes unless they are truly division one, FBS material.
tom mui #184 gotta be the year of puns bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
249. I agree… I can already tell Chow wants to keep the best polynesians in Hawaii. I can see the relationships with the Tongan and Samoan community growing in the coming years.
You’ve got a academic way of writing which I don’t often run into. Just thought I’d inform you 😛
This post made my brain tingly. You rock!
As spotted on the news: Richard Torres & T. Bell at the Toronto Argonauts’ combine. Good luck to all of the guys who showed up.
How come the newscast never highlight some of the names that showed up to the Argonauts combine? I guess Colt never showed up then? I’m not positive, but was that Melila Purcell doing the vertical jump assessment? Good luck to all who attended.
According to Scout Recruiting Services, in the last eleven years of tracking Hawaii recruiting, there have been eighty blue chip athletes with a 3-star rating or better.

#256 – Of the nine commits from Hawaii, two haven’t reached campus yet. Chad Lopati and Tigi Hill.
Tigi Hill would be a real good get in my opinion.
Impressive!! I hope you will keep up the amazing work.
pretty sure that was melia purcell.
tigi hill needs to secure that aa degree. he had a good season this past year.
four of last year’s commits will never see ching field.
Chad Lopati? A commit from 2009 who hasn’t made it yet? Does he still count? And would the new staff welcome him? I don’t know his story, so I am curious.
#262 – I don’t thik that he will make it either. My point is that if you subtract Tigi Hill and Chad Lopati from the total commits to Hawaii, that would be a yield of seven athletes out of a total of eighty blue chippers, or a yield of 8.75%. Remember now that is 8.75% over the last eleven years.
If Hawaii were able to only get Kiha Sai from the 2012 class, that make it an 11.1% or a 1 out of nine yield. Coach Chow has already improved in that area. One more athlete would make it 22%, and two more would make it 33%.
in 2009…9 signed recruits never made it to university avenue.
in 3008, 7 signees never made it to manoa.
Pretty fascinating blog post. You often publish a fascinating blog post. I will come again in the near future.
I am a New Yorker and I saw him today. cheap wow gold
In the same time frame from 2002 to 2011, Hawaii has had roughly 158 2-star athletes that have earned scholarships to FBS schools. Of that total, fifty-five of them have competed for the University of Hawaii. That’s 55 out of 158 football players on scholarship that were rated either two-stars or non.
That is a yield of about 35% on the athletes that were 2-stars or not rated. A few of them turned out to be very good ball players.

268,,,i believe there are ten on your list that never made it school here.
Finis should be on the three star or above list no? He is an under the radar guy.
#269 – So that helps to make my point.
#270 – Who? Bugaz?
Fonua sorry auto correct. Lol
in the past three years, 20 recruits who inked loi’s were either academically ineligible or for some other reason never made to dole street.
That’s like putting ourselves on an NCAA punishment of 6 recruits a year. Totally unsat!!!
So what eventually happened to those schollerships? Given to walkons and transfers already part of the team perhaps
So our yield over the past 10 years:
5-Stars = 0%
4-Stars = 0%
3 Stars = 11% (6 out of 55)
2 Stars to N/R = 36% (56 out of 154)
Any improvement on these percentages would be positive progress by the new coaching staff.
I don’t think that we should be expecting miracles. The idea of going away to school has been ingrained in our local culture for many years now. The idea of going away to school or to the military to grow up is ingrained in us all from an early age.
Steady progress in a positive direction would be a big improvement.
If you decide to buy your own containers for your company, you must not rush into buying them. …
Talk to people whom you know have bought such containers for their services. Also, talk to various manufacturers who offer these containers for sale and take time to consider various factors before you zero in on a specific container that is available …
Bakers earn the majority of their income in the morning, they earn most of their dough at yeast by a leaven o’clock.
we might have 9 scholies left.
I knew there was trouble when Geithner was named as Sec Treasury. I just didn’t realize how much. If half of this article is fact, this government is guilty of at least treason. Would that I had someone to cast a meaningful vote for. As of today, I’m writing in Bernie’s name.buy gw2 gold
That’s what I think also. From the count below it appears that we have sixteen schollies already accounted for. Unless of course, three of them(Alo, Woolsey, & Eselu) can be counted towards last year’s total.
Kiha Sai
Ben Fonua
Leo Koloamatangi
Clark Evans
Ronald Fields
Gus Lavaka

#282 – If what Papa Sai says is true, then we may need to save one schollie for Kapua Sai. If Sai can graduate this summer from Utah, then he will be available to play in 2012. He’ll have two years left to play. That would be enough time to obtain an MBA from Hawaii, or get started on a law degree.
282…of that list
ikaika woolsey count towards this year.
justin alo would count this year if he enters as a grey shirt (didn’t know he qualified)
sione lavaka and jt turner have to qualify as transfers first. they have academic work to do.
ipulasi eselu, his loi was for last year and since he was a non-qualifier the offer is null and void. not sure if he would be offered a new scholarship at this time.
jeremy higgins, brayden van ackeren, and tana woodard are non-scholie.
i believe taylor graham will be scholie.
that still leaves nine if the two hs qb’s and the two jc’s guys get in.
we are at 63 scholies right now, give or take one or two. what that means is that we have only 22 scholies available this year.
also, we were going to save one for penitito faalogo.
i guess they still waiting on the final approval by the ncaa. doesn’t he have to transfer to a school that offers an master’s program that is unavailable at his current school.
perhaps international business or oceanology.
#285 – I’m sure they will be able to find something.
found this on ikaika woolsey and justin alo.
if this still holds true, then it is woolsey who is here now and justin alo has work to do.
Justin Alo is here.
This article is insightful and profound as far as I’m concerned. Keep up the great writing and I’ll keep reading.

Kaui Hart Hemmings is a a tremendous writer.
Descendants is a very real depiction of Hawaii in our lifetime. They did an excellent job with the movie adaptation, as far as I’m concerned Clooney is now hanai to the people of Hawaii. Some called the movie the best acting performance of his life. I agree.
Kaui is a treasure. Can’t wait to see her future works. Below is a link about her. Great read, and it also paints a touching portrait of her hanai father, Fred Hemmings. Where are you, Sonny from Kapolei? We miss you here!

What about these guys?

– DE David Katina

thanks fo da info VonAppen.
if i wuz FAU, I’d talk up Hawaii all I can until i get to sign my name to da firing squad list.
then i’d make excuses why no can no can not on my life no can.
since i would hafta face Coach Chow an Co., i’m thinking I’m gonna be on da wrong side of the gun barrel. nope, I’d go stay home and play a FCS team insteada face a Chow Hound that is hell bent on bringing HUGE crowds to Aloha Stadium.

Watch highlights of the NFL playoffs and you can see how important the tightend is in all of the scoring. It also reminds me of all the times Hawaii got burnt by the tightend.
DPK . . .
White. That is how my area is. More to come over the next couple of days.
Other than that, busy with my kids. Lotta conferences coming up!
I am amazed and thrilled with the recruits and how quickly the coaches are working.
Whoo-hoo!!!
Yay 3 more recruits!!! Oh wait never mind it’s still yesterday’s topic. Just kidding good morning!
Is Tim Tebow the most famous white Bronco since OJ’s car?
No write up in the SA today about the 3 UH commitments! Quite unbelievable. Slap in the face in my opinion. If it was the Seattle Times, or the Oregonian it would be top of mind in their sports pages.
^ i find that very disappointing too.
I know the coaches are working really hard to fill this years class, but there is not too many spots left open. I am hoping they are making contact with next years prospects as well. Get on um, and stay on um!
Derek and cheepono, maybe since its only oral commits, and not big news until LOI day. Its very big and great news to us though. That’s why we’re here on the Beat.

About nine more schollies left. Hopeful that a few more local boys make that 180 to stay home and represent.
Here’s hoping FAU can fit coming to Hawaii in their football schedule.
Rivals has Jaydon Mickens the #26 player in the state of California. A 4 star rating, he doesn’t have Hawaii on his interest level. According to rivals 2 teams were high on his list, including Washington. That said, I don’t think we will get him, but you never say never.
If I recall, we had one 5 star player who played at UH after being All-American in JC. He was a linebacker who went to Roosevelt, but his name escapes me right now. Who was he?
Kapanui? Kalilimoku?
Cannot be Kapanui as he was not in JC. I’m pretty sure he was Chad Owens’ teammate at Roosevelt.
Unrealistic to think we have a chance at jaydon mickens lol. If we somehow got him I’d take everybody to lunch.
Hope we get Evans, that JC TE. Da bugga is a horse! Blocking, catching, running folks over! Nice!
Hope we get all of Chow’s recruit candidates, the Doctor knows talent when he sees it!
chad kalilimoku
Trust in Chow. Where da lunch? Just joking MattyBoy. Are we even going after him?
chad kalilimoku.
Is Ben Mamea going to join the program at any point? He and Tigi Hill signed with Hawaii but didn’t qualify academically.
And don’t you remember the overhype when June Jones said Gabe Tuata was the second coming of Barry Sanders. Tuata, 5’4″ from the Big Island coudn’t even get into UH and went to Pasadena CC and later to Mount SAC Junior College. I had heard that he was doing well there, but by now he’s eligibility is over and he’s not playing anymore. Moral of the story: Don’t believe the hype and don’t get too excited in the beginning. Watch and believe your own eyes then make your assessments. Good recruiting is the result of good talent evaluations. Some will be good, some will be busts. Hopefully, more of the good will translate to a winning program. The number of non-qualifiers for prior UH recruting classes was very disturbing along with the lack of recruting by top local prospects. The one that was the most blatant is not recruiting Hauoli Jamora. Jamora was clearly the best defensive player his senior year. I’m glad Mack is not here anymore. Nice guy, but saying he wanted us to be the Miami-Fla of the West was all smoke and mirrors. Even now, the real Miami-Fla isn’t the same as before. What a joke. Hopefullly, now with Chow and Company, things are looking up!
#326 –
Now I wish more than ever that he commits to UH! 😆 A great player and a free lunch? It doesn’t get any better than that! 😉
#330 There you go.
I did notice that while looking up some of UH’s verbals, Hawaii was not even mentioned. Coach Chow and staff got a late start but making great progress.
recruiting is a cut throat business. just ask jeff tedford.
the sark was able to lure tosh lupoi who was rivals 2010 recruiter of the year and the pointman on guys like shaq thompson and arik armstead to washington. reports say he was making $164k as a d-line coach at cal but will be making $500k at washington.
hiring coaches with the hope they will bring their recruits to their new place of employment has become very common. there is no such thing as loyalty, chivalry, and a code of honor when it comes to recruiting. that’s the nature of the beast.
if UH wants to go head to head with the big boys for elite recruits, we gotta be prepared to fight.
#331 Derek
Mac was probably sincere about trying to make UH the Miami, Fl. of the west. Just because it didn’t happen doesn’t mean he didn’t try to do it.
So far, the Chow recruits look good. We’ll just have to wait and see how they pan out on the field next year. Like Derek said, don’t believe the hype. Wait and see with our own eyes.
congrats to vander on bein WAC player of the week!
sports for fun:
I agree… looking at #256 above, from the list Pride has provided, we can see that in his 4 years, Mac recruited more 3+ star players from Hawaii than JJ did in his last 4 years. 7 for Mack.. 2 for JJ.
338,
Yup Macks recruiting classes were not actually all that bad! Better than jones if you ask me.
Great article on Saturday’s Warrior/Wolfpack bball game. You can see the disappointment on Gib’s face in the video interview. Two crucial turnovers down the stretch hurt the Warrior ballahs.

muggy morning today eh you know da rules

wow reading over the post from last night and just some observations;
1. pride excelled in more than sports, hula and song at KS. j/k his research in the 3,4,5 star recruits from 808 is right on. now needs to apply to keeping matson prices down. regarding da recruits many just checking it out (local style) but eventually many will come around when dey see how pono UH is going be. plus the other schools now gotta come out with betta offers to get um no matter win win as I see it.
2. somebody sure peeded off whitey last night unless it wasn’t him. first tim I notice
but maybe gotta pay more attention bwhaaaaaaaa
3. al right on as usual I figgah dat guy one humongous flock of birdies 🙂
no kea UH unda the radar, just keep plugging along and eventually dey going ambush the oddah guys and bumby going pay attention.
kden more kope
