It was disappointing to hear that defensive tackle Keahi Watson is not on the active roster.
He is best known as being the younger brother of former UH defensive tackle Keala Watson.
I’ll remember him as a good guy who harbored a dream of playing for the Warriors — so much so that he relinquished a scholarship at Saint Francis University to transfer to UH a few years ago.
Watson, like many of the other walk-ons, used to sit on the bench between the UH athletic complex and Stan Sheriff Center while the scholarship players ate from the training table. He would talk to reporters until it was time to get ready for his first class of the day.
Most of his contributions came as a member of the scout team. He also was expected to help craft this year’s ha‘a.
We wish him the best.

Charlie Wade officially begins his job as the men’s volleyball coach tomorrow. But Wade, who arrived in town last week, already has done some preliminary work. He has had conversations with most of the returning players.
Because Mike Wilton remains on contract through June 30, Wade will be using the first-floor office previously used by fund-raiser Lorraine Leslie, who now works for Central Union Church.

MW shoots an eagle, 5 birdies, 2 double bogeys, and ends with a bogey. Without all of the bogeys she would have had a great game, instead she ends up with an average game.

Thank you Ferd Lewis for putting the Warriors first game of 2009 in perspective!

University of Central Arkansas seems to have accomplished what NO other football team has done, EVER!

Nationally ranked ( final rank of 12 in 2008 )in its 3rd year at D1 level and a “pre-season” top 10 team for 2009.

Many of us who thought it would be a “breeze” failed to notice how well they did in 2008. It is no longer a “gauran ball barring” win. The Warriors will be hard pressed from game 1.

  11. A-House June 14, 2009 9:18 am

A good morning to all Tsaikos, near and far!

Much Mahalos to Keahi Watson for his contributions to the Warrior program and much success in your future!

Congrats to Allie for completing the half-marathon. It is grueling and very tough in hot, humid conditions with very little or no tradewinds.

And, a shout out to Rainbow cliff – may you and your family be blessed with all things good!

someday a generous sponsor will donate enough for ALL athletes at UH to eat at a training table for their entire playing career; not only when their sport is active. Is this against NCAA rules?

    Most likely.

I think the basic rule of thumb with the NCAA is if it’s not available to ALL university students, it’s against the rules.

If that was me at the training table and I looked over at my impoverished team mate that didn’t have a meal ticket because of the rules you know I’d be there helping him out. In the past I can say I have done exactly that. It’s not hard to wrap up a few chicken thighs or pork chops in napkins and escape undetected. One time, honestly, I took out about 8 sandwiches much to the delight of the hungry. And I imagine this generation of Warriors keeps an eye out for their brothers, too, that are hungry and don’t have a meal ticket.

On the subject of K. Watson, I pay my respects to him for giving it his best shot. From his standpoint he can say he jumped into the ring, strapped on the gloves and rolled with the punches. He fought. He can walk away from the game knowing he went down fighting. It may be a setback, but it’s a better feeling than the ones who walk away from the game by default, usually by their own ugliness–grades, self pity, bad influences and not trying.

Many thanks to Kekoa and Queen Diana for being such gracious hosts yesterday for the surprise 😯 celebration! Good thing that KK didn’t know about his own party 👿 or else he would have been on time! 🙄

KK: Glad you didn’t have to buy duct tape this morning because you didn’t realize that you were not home yet! Next time just click your rubbah slippahs three times and say, “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.” If you wake up in Kekoa’s house…well then at least the rest of the island is safe and no one had to listen to the snorefest!

    Kazz:

Football team has a training table.

    Do other sports?

    A-house,

I don’t know what exactly the other programs call their meals, but as ST pointed out in the past, the schollie kids on the football team get the cost of the training table meals out of their scholarship checks and the non-schollie players are welcome to the meals but they gotta pay and it’s not cheap considering the income, or lack thereof, of a college student.

In essence the training table meals are not free. The question of “can they be with the help of donors” I don’t know. That would be like giving free food to student athletes and in most cases, we’ve heard stories about programs getting busted for that.

However, the softball team and the two volleyball teams, the booster clubs for these programs provide the cost of their pregame or post game meals (or both). Some claimed this is not allowable, but I don’t think this practice has ever been an issue, at least at UH.

Last I remember reading is that boosters are permitted to provide student-athletes with a pre- or post-game meal or snack as a benefit incidental to participation (only for team members of that team which actually participated in the contest). This does not include parents, other relatives or friends of student-athletes. If these people attend a pre- or post-game meal function, they must pay for the value of the meal. As long as it’s not in a restaurant for example and the meal can be catered.

Since the football team has their training table meals during the week and their post game and pre game meals on game day, I don’t know if all the other sports have “training tables” during the week while the season is happening, my guess is probably not. Just a guess.

hope it did not rain in Juneau – on our last day, a small rain storm (with wind) came through and it was very unpleasant – place is always cold -notice how the “natives” were all bundled up in long sleeve flanel shirts and a windbreaker – and this was in the middle of July last year – now I know better on how to dress.

Bess is Miami’s #1 punt returner. This is no surprise because he outperformed Ginn last year.

  75. Garret June 14, 2009 3:53 pm

In case people don’t want to click on the article and find the part that relates to Bess:

WR Davone Bess is still working as the Dolphins’ No. 1 punt returner. Ted Ginn Jr. is No. 2. Bess says he’s trying to be more instinctive with his returns.

  76. Garret June 14, 2009 3:57 pm

The NCAA ruled that the media will be forbidden from attending some camps. This also applies to scouting services like rivals and scout.

The NCAA has decided college sports camps aren’t the place for media.

“An institution has an obligation to preclude the presence of media (including scouting services) at its institutional camps for the purpose of writing stories, filming and/or taking pictures,” the NCAA states. “… As a result, we advise you to notify media outlets they are not permitted to be present at institutional camps.”

  77. Garret June 14, 2009 3:58 pm

According to the text of the NCAA’s new rule interpretation, it apparently will be an NCAA violation for a school to let the media attend camps! The NCAA will punish schools for having media at camps…that just seems so wrong.

  78. Garret June 14, 2009 3:59 pm

SDSU hasn’t had a lease to play at Qualcomm Stadium for quite some time now…with the city broke and losing money on SDSU football games, the city is asking SDSU for more money if they want to use the stadium. Trouble is, SDSU’s Athletic Department is just as broke as the city.

  79. Garret June 14, 2009 4:04 pm

The Pac-10 will apparently sign a deal with the Alamo Bowl to send their #2 or #3 team (I guess to play a Big 12 team). That means that some bowl games (like the Poinsettia Bowl and Hawaii Bowl) will probably lose their Pac-10 ties for the future. I think the Hawaii Bowl pays $750k (with much higher travel expenses for the Pac-10 than going to San Antonio) while the Alamo Bowl pays around $2.3 million.

Pac-10 football fans who have long clamored for a shake-up in the league’s bowl partners could begin to see some change with the 2010 season.

The Alamo, regionally tied to the Big 12, wants to continue with that arrangement, but would like to enhance the profile on the other side.

The Alamo last year had a per-team payout of $2.25 million, comparable to the Holiday’s $2.3 million. The Sun Bowl, which has long been tied to the Pac-10’s No. 3 team, paid $1.9 million.

  80. d1島 June 14, 2009 4:14 pm

    A-House #11

UCA is still considered a Division II school for football and all other sports is Division 1. They play in the Southland Conference and are supposedly trying to get there football program in Division 1 status by Sep. 2010 football season. They have a pretty good football team and have dominated the DII level for the most part. Still I’m not worried about our boys, they will be prepared no doubt. Any team can beat each other on any given day, but UCA shouldn’t even be considered in the same sentence with us. If we’re to be a Top Football program we need to dominate and kick the ish out of these kind of teams and let them know they need to stay at the DII level! Granted UH has had its troubles in the past with DII teams but those times are over. Coach Mack needs to keep the pedal down and full throttle until the final whistle of the 4th quarter and simply put teams away!

  92. Pauoa Boy June 14, 2009 7:10 pm

The only thing good about UCA is that Scottie Pippen went there.

    Division II/ Division 1-AA = Same Smell

  94. Pauoa Boy June 14, 2009 7:19 pm

    Lakers vs. Orlando

Maybe if the Orlando Magic could figure out how to close out 4th quarter leads correctly and not blow a load all over themselves they wouldn’t have been sent home without a championship. Stan Van Gundy is a choke artist of a Coach. Great job to Kobe and the Lakers for winning another championship! Finally got one without Shaq. Still would have rather seen Lebron and the Cavs go up against Kobe and the Lakers in the Finals…

ST: did Keahi Watson play at all in 2008 ?

If not, and he was not on scholarship, his situation sounds similar to Ikaika Rodenhurst.

If so, he can go play elsewhere.

Maybe he shoud contact Portland State.

    What’s your take?

  107. Stephen Tsai June 14, 2009 10:12 pm

He played a few snaps in 2008.
But because he was on the roster, he would have to sit out again if he transferred.

I read Ann Miller’s article on new Wahine Basketball Coach Dana Takahara-Dias. The impression I have is that she’s following the same template that Coach Mack uses, for she also wants to recruit the certain types of players to fit into the program, increase alumni interests, have her players be role models and also reach out into the community and bring back tradition.

Sounds like a smart cookie to me. For even as I’m reading her coaching philosophy and mission statement I can see a lot of psychology in the way she thinks. Bingo. She wants her players to love her…and then they’ll come to here.

    (from Ann’s article)
“She wants her players to become role models and know they will have a wonderful experience as a student and an athlete. We’ll make sure they are loved and cared for.”

“I think our ‘mission statement’ is to take care of one another…It’s always been to have a competitive team, but right now we have to do the little things and hope the winning comes with it.”

As much as people say that she should talk to former Coach Goo, what I’d do if I were her, also, is talk to Coach Shoji and ask him what is his secrets of having all the girls bond together like one happy family. I think this will help, too.

It would also be so nice to see the Wahines in new uniforms this coming season. It would certainly punctuate erasing the past–and moving forward in a new direction. And as a fan you’d want to see them unveiling a new look.

Congrats to Allie for completing the half-marathon. It is grueling and very tough in hot, humid conditions with very little or no tradewinds.

  118. addahknowjoe June 15, 2009 2:19 am

Over the years we usually see the feel good stories of a walk-on that makes good on their sacrifices and dedication they’ve put forth to play for the Warriors and represent Hawai’i under the Halawa lights. What we often fail to see are the many players that don’t make it. Many who put out just the same efforts as those who do succeed. Usually, outside forces beyond their control prevent them from garnering their dreams.

Mahalo Keahi for all that you’ve sacrificed these years in your pursuit to become a Warrior.

In my book, you already are and forever will be, a Warrior.

With the budget crunch one would like to see a reduction in waste — that includes food. If there is a better than fair amount of food being wasted then less should be ordered.

  122. Bulla June 15, 2009 3:43 am

    PB #94,

I don’t think DII and DIAA are the same levell, but i am biased. Don’t forget last year that Weber State was winning at 1/2 time and if it were not for the ‘mystery’ concussion that Funaki received, Graunke would not have gone in for the 3rd quarter.

    Just my 2 sense….have a good monday

  123. Bulla June 15, 2009 3:44 am

    wafan
good morning (as i look west and wave to you from AZ, haha)

Wafan ~ Were you able to meet da jm2345 Ohana for a little Seattle stew?

I know we poke fun at her on the blog, but that lady knows her UH sports teams as do all of our Tsaikettes. She has proven her passion for knowing the inside scoops on each team and lends her vocal support! (I sit 2 sections away to save my hearing).

I’m hoping she will be at our t-gates again this year
and able to attend more of the games. Opposing teams will be more fearful when they hear her. She’s so kolohe, and wonders why her young teen is so unruly! Seems like the apple fell right on her toes!

Maybe you’ll get to meet her at a cc when you come home next month.

    aloha kekoa,

Good morning coach Bulla! We missed you at the function in da junction this weekend. See you when you get back. Have a safe trip.

  127. Pauoa Boy June 15, 2009 4:38 am

    Bulla,
Maybe should rephrase that, I was meaning to say that our Warrior Boys shouldn’t be having a hard time against those type of teams in DII and D-1AA. But in the past we’ve had troubles with those teams either losing or being close games. Hard to gain the kind of respect we want in our football program when these teams give us rub. No to say that some of those teams could compete at the D1 level, but still they shouldn’t compare. IMO No worry about being biased, Weber State is a good football team. With the amount of local talent on that team, some of which I feel should have gotten a shot to play for UH, they’ll be at the top of there conference consistently. Coach Ron is a good Coach too, remember when he was at Utah when Darnell Arcenaux played. Anyway, good luck to Ryan this year, hopefully he can stay injury free and have a successful season…

  128. Kekoa (iPhone) June 15, 2009 4:47 am
