"Legend of Gary Beemer"

Gary Beemer, the Warriors’ newly hired strength and conditioning coach, has an impressive history.

He worked out for a year to gain enough strength and weight to join the Florida Gators as a walk-on lineman. Later, he joined the Gators’ strength staff  (under Mickey Marotti) while earning a master’s degree in biomechanics. This past year, he was a member of the Minnesota Vikings’ strength and conditioning staff.

In searching for candidates for the newly opened UH position, UH athletic director Ben Jay contacted Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. (Jay previously worked as an administrator at Ohio State.) Meyer directed Jay to Marotti, now OSU’s strength coach. Marotti recommended Beemer.

“Working in the NFL is awesome,” Beemer said. “The players are world class. But my heart is in helping young men develop into great football players. I think that happens more at the college level than in the NFL. Guys who come to the NFL are pre-packaged, pre-formed. They’ve already arrived. … In college, you get a young guy — raw talent, undeveloped. … You get to mold him and meld him and get him ready to play high-quality football at the college level, and then go on to play in the NFL. That’s the goal.”

In his final season as a player, Beemer had a very memorable moment.

Former UH linebacker Paipai Falemalu is seeking another NFL opportunity after being released by the Cleveland Browns.

He had signed as an undrafted free agent.

I not a big money six figure donating check writing powerbroker like those who made Ben Jay flip, flop on his decision. I’m just a average UH fan in comparison but I know one thing, if we the Warriors supporters make enough noise and stop giving money to UH just like the power brokers threatened Ben Jay to do, we can get the Warriors name back as the nickname for the UH Football team. It will even out to make by the numbers game, the power brokers have more money but we the Warrior supporters have more people and a vote too. The only way to compete against big money is using our voice as fans, the more of us threaten to not show up for games, buy merchandise and buy PPV, but still silently support the team by watching the 4 free games on the CBS network games (That way we can still watch the USC game too), if they black out the games I know that some of your crafty fans know how to watch to game at a neighbors house, sports bar or on the internet for free.

This is America is our right to boycott and protest against the tyranny of those power brokers and politicians that are stuffing this down our throats. This is not about being a bad UH fan that some people are calling the ones that are using the same tactic the power brokers and politicians used on Ben Jay and UH staff, because wouldn’t that make the power brokers and politicians bad UH fans as well? It’s not about taking the higher ground in this case because the power brokers don’t make all the rules and we should let it be known by our voice and wallets.

You can be a silent UH fan and still love UH Athletics/Football. This is about principle that we may not have big wallets or political power of the privileged few but we the average fan that doesn’t support the forced Rainbow Warrior Football nickname change shoved upon us by the powerful few. The Hawaii Warrior Football nickname has been in our tradition for 13 years. This is our beloved football team just as much as it is the power brokers and if the only way is to boycott then so be it!

The decision to change the name irks me big time in two ways.

    1. It just shows that the AD at Hawaii has no power. How can you effectively run a dept when you are just a puppet.

    2. We are stuck in the past with the “rainbows” and are not forward looking in terms of branding and what appeals to the next generation of athletes/fans.

Oregon is always used as an example but their branding has changed significantly from back in the day. Not all may like it, but its cutting edge and the high school players dig it.

    continued from 05.14.2013:

    $$ Continued

I should have continued the thought on Deficit Reduction. The longest journey starts with the first steps

    1. All seats in the stadium under UH control (Stadium Commission and Gov have a significant number of great seats for their use)

    2. All stadium signage under UH control (SDSU has all in Qualcomm)

    3. Parking revenue from stadium as well as UH athletic contests at Stan Sheriff

    4. Concession revenue if staffed by UH volunteer/booster organizations

    5. All apparel contracts under UH athletics purview with financial gains going to UH Athletics

    6. Game replay contracts to UH Athletics

    7. Athletic uniforms, when ‘retired’ from use, sold to fans/boosters (right now they are technically state property and there is significant red tape to get them released)

    8. All booster programs ‘donate’ 1% to UH Foundation for Admin fees (currently 3%)

    9. UH Admin charge AKA for resident tuition for all athletes

    10. Power brokers, powers that work behind the scenes, bloggers, and or booster groups put a concerted effort to band together to apply pressure to ‘decision makers’ to specify UH Athletics as a line item in the state budget. UH Admin would not be able to deduct this amount from the historical amount of fiscal support.

I am sure that as we give it more thought we can come up with more items for consideration.

1-5 would put the UH athletics in the black, so no way would those things ever happen.

the way i see it, the UH athletics make choke money for the state, it’s not a money loser. the books are just mangled to make it look like it’s in the red.

  15. 3-Prong May 15, 2013 8:19 am

One of the tv statuons did an unscientific survey on the name change decision. The results were 3-1 in favor of the change. I applaud Ben Jay for correcting his error and siding with the majority of fans. That takes guts.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I often wonder about silent “fans” that allegedly “support” UH athletics.

All they give is lip service.

They worry about the “name” when UH football is UH football whether it is “Fighting Deans”, “Rainbow Warriors”, “Warriors” or “Flowing Lava”.

It makes as much sense as to figure whether to love one’s sweetheart, wife or significant other if he/she is called “Honey”, “Darling”, “Love”, “Ipo”

  19. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2013 8:31 am

I interviewed him on the phone. He is well-spoken, very eloquent.

    OPTICAL ILLUSION WARRIORS

  25. 3Point1Four May 15, 2013 9:01 am

#8 You say boycott the games. Don’t spend a cent supporting UH Athletics. You do realize that without fan support UH football fails. Our other sports are already positioned in the Big West & MPSF Conferences. It will not be that difficult a decision to drop a failing football program. If you love UH football as it would appear by the passion you display, please reconsider your decision.

You say Warriors has been your tradition for 13 years. For Rainbow baseball fans, it’s been our tradition for 90 years. Move on.

  26. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2013 9:09 am

When you buy a ticket to an event, it shouldn’t be your concern how the organizers use your money (unless it’s for blood diamonds or the overthrow of the government).

When you buy a season ticket, same thing. It’s a supply-and-demand issue, and the premium fee is to assure the purchase of a good seat. (Sort of like slipping the maitre’d money for a good table, if the exchange were mostly tax deductible.) Again, not your concern how the money is spent.

But if you make a donation, with no benefit, then there should be a concern. But very few donate without any benefits.

    So …

If you enjoy the show, buy a ticket. If not, don’t. It’s entertainment that’s a business. You’re paying for the entertainment, not for what goes on behind the scenes or in meeting rooms.

  27. ?..... May 15, 2013 9:16 am

Instead of boycotting and all these extremist moves….how about a petition/poll from actual people…the common people-you and me….not big money. Seems, these decisions are being made by a few….University of Hawaii is the States TEAM, OUR team. without the public and US supporting there is no THEM. I never saw this go to vote or a true poll taken….from the news there was about 50 people supporting the “rainbows” at UH and I’m sure there are more…..but I am also sure there are more that support the “Warriors” fight also. Have a state poll via a website or something where we can all vote, you must donate at least a dollar to have a vote and different email address for multiple votes, which all money would go to UH athletics (or minus the money part). Then we’ll see what the public really wants the UH name to be. Ben Jay you disappoint US not because you choose Rainbows, but because the way you handled the situation and seemed to have conceded (from our eyes). Go Warriors (Rainbow Warriors also….)

  30. Warrior Dave May 15, 2013 9:32 am

Thank you ST for telling it like it is regarding the name change.

Mr. Chinen and his 50 supporters had nothing to do with the Ben’s reversal on the name change. It was those few power brokers that did. They will always have that power.

What bothers me most is that Ben had to do an about face on his first major decision as AD. That tells me he has no power going forward. I guess it’ll be same oh, same oh going forward. Continue to gather search committees for new hires like coaches. He may only have the power to decide what he eats for lunch.

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid May 15, 2013 9:37 am

Regardless of whether or not they have Rainbows on their jerseys or in their name, I will always see Warriors.

    #12 Go Bows,

Very classy statement by name calling.

    #25 3point1four

The program will not fail because the almighty power brokers and politics have spoken with there big wallets and checkbooks. Since they make the rules they can pay a little extra to keep the Rainbow Warrior Football nickname. It shouldn’t be put on the backs of the lowly Average Hawaii Warriors Fans to pay for a product they didn’t want! So boycotting is the best way for the average Warrior fan to make a statement.

Stephen Tsai makes good points if you want to buy a ticket go ahead and buy a ticket for entertainment, but as for the very public power play of the nickname (not behind the scenes) change for the Warrior Football team, paying for a name is part of the product, so I wont pay and feel that anyone that doesn’t like the Football nickname change should pay for tickets or merchandise or donate anymore until the football name is changed back to Warriors. Or should be called names for doing so, again very classy Go Bows.

This is a personal choice and your right as a American to express yourself verbally, in writing or boycotting if you don’t agree with the nickname change. Plus nothing says I don’t agree like a low season attendance at Aloha Stadium and slumping Football merchandise sales! Dont’ worry the power big boys with the fat wallets will cover the tab for slumping ticket and merchandise sales, but getting okoles in the seats every game this season is another thing. After the USC game, is going to really hard for to fill the stadium without the support of the Warrior fans.

    Welcome Ogre…I mean, Coach Beemer!

  40. RB May 15, 2013 9:50 am

If the football team has a good season everyone is gonna say “see the name change did it” I can hear it now LOL…. What I don’t get is why only now Mr Chinen or Mr Takai made a push to keep “RAINBOWS” part of the name. You think they would have been making push for it the day June Jones went to “WARRIORS” and every year after that. It would be so funny if Ben Jay said that its going back to “RAINBOW WARRIORS” and come July 1 the name is still “WARRIORS” ahhh wishful thinking.

  41. Shoko May 15, 2013 9:52 am

    38. Nothing like stirring the pot in the off season. 😉

  42. A-House May 15, 2013 9:57 am

Is it really true that certain “big money power brokers” put the heat on Ben Jay or is it mere speculation?

Those who are pushing this theme – do you have facts to back up your statements?

If so, then “power brokers”, who are all over the world and in all situations including politics, have the $$$ to make certain points in their favor.

However, do these so called “power brokers” also select a coach? an AD? UH President?

“Whats Up”…. You’re going to need to do a lot of campaigning of fans if you are going to get anywhere with your protest/boycott. I’m sure that the flip flop happened because of the desires of big boosters but the vast majority of regular fans like the change. I couldn’t care less which name is chosen, and I spent 5 years competing for UH. But for those who do care, according to two public surveys (TV and SB), people overwhelmingly support UH being referred to as “Rainbow Warriors”. Only 20% responded that they prefer “Warriors”. You have a big fight ahead of you to change anything. I think a better battle, that has much more support, would be to protest the disfunctional structure at UH that leads to scandals and undermining the efforts of competent people.

If your kid, a relative, or friend announces they are a Rainbow would you see any less in them? Would you shun them from outings, get togethers, or other social events?

    Ignorance abounds…

Sure the decision to reverse a decision doesn’t sit well with some but heh, the team(s) still need our support. I’m going to support.

Hope the strength coach can get a grant from the NFL and spice up the weightroom.

    Kaimiloa

Boycotting Rainbow Warrior Football games/PPV and the merchandise. And being a silent supporter by watching the games for free via the 4 CBS game, Sports Bars, Neighbors/Friends house or internet. It’s still a choice that other Hawaii Warrior fans have to make on there own. I’m not organizing a champaign and I beg to differ different polls will generate different result depending on who is the demographic. 1 SA poll 60/40 want to keep the Rainbow nickname in Mens sports and another scout blog and other blogs poll 90/10 doesn’t want the Rainbow nickname in Mens Football. So that is a moot point to bring polls up, the truth is how well the Mens Rainbow Warriors Football recruiting, ticket sales, merchandise sales and PPV sales do with the nickname change in a few years, when the current 2013 Warriors recruits graduate in 2017-18.

What’s in a school’s nickname? While the hot topic of late seems to be about UH’s nickname, I went online to find out some of the other colleges’ nicknames and found some amusing (to me anyway) nicknames.

Some had to do with religion:

    Quakers, even Hustlin Quakers, Friars.

Race: Fighting Irish, Fighting Scotts, Pygmies, Swedes, Scotts.

Others that I have no idea what they are or the meaning of their nickname like: Zips, Saxons, Lord Jeffs (no Jeffetes?), Bollweavils (men) & Cotton Blossoms (women), Tartans, Mules (men) and Jennies (women), Mocs, Kohawks, Stags (men) & Athenas (women), Cobbers (corn?), Tejados (men) & Lady Tejados, Geoducks, Paladins (Cowboy in the 50’s and 60’s??), Duhawks (what about didn’t do hawks), Norse, Giffords, (I think there were 2 different ones), Loper, Ospreys, Yeomen (no ladies?), Stormy Petrels, Blue Hose (I have 2 grey ones at home), Peregrines (the bottle water?), Griffins (all relate to Peter of Family Guy?), Nads, Ospreys, Billikens, Eutectics, Oles, Peacocks(men, duh) & Peahens (double duh), Dons, Mad Hatters (movie character?),Banana Slugs (is that the one that is ruining our banana crops in Hawaii), Catamounts, Demon Deacons (both together?), Icabods (Scruge?), Gorlocks (cousin of Goldilocks?), Tetons, and Maccabees.

There are others that could be by gender or even gender benders or maybe of sexual diviations like Beavers (at least 4), Crimson or even Crimson Tide (I know, nothing to do with gender, but to me sounds a little wishy washy), Scarlet Hawks (Scarlet, Crimson, same, same?) Jacks (no Jills?), Trojans (several, you know), Stags (are they doing it alone?), Student Princes (nuff said), Flames (it better be fire), Jimmies (no Jimmites?), Johnnies, Bonnies, and Vixens (maybe should get together with Stags).

No need to tell me what any of the names mean nor how they got their name. This is my take on nicknames, from a guy that was born and raised in the once country side of Oahu, attended public school and was meant to have a chuckle over.

The U of H, had the most nicknames of all the schools listed (soon to be changed).

I forgot to mention my ALLTIME FAVORITE nickname comes from the Puerto Rico University, the Tarzans and Janes.

I’m sure all of the schools listed, have students that attend because of the education and not their nicknames.

    ENJOY!

  65. Kevin May 15, 2013 12:35 pm

Am I the only one that notices ONLY 2,500 people voted on the subject matter?

That’s a concern in itself if you know what I mean.

    Its like the Presidential Election…

Can sit here and debate Romney VS Obama and while about 100 million Americans voted for their choice… what about the other VAST VAST majority of the population that are eligible voters that .. DIDN’T VOTE.

  68. tommui May 15, 2013 12:49 pm

KEVIN #65 – could be the vast majority don’t care because it is not that important an issue whether it is Fighting Deans, Rainbows or Warriors.

The important thing is whether they care about the University of Hawaii PERIOD – no matter what the nickname may be.

tommui, I know what an anteater is. It’s the cartoon about the rodent who was hungry because “I haven’t had an ant in over a month.”

Dirt Bags? Yeah, especially since our basebows just played them, but I didn’t want to offend one of my relatives.

the UH spent $1.1 million on lawyers after they got duped for $200k. they (the UH) get choke money, and the athletic department should raise the bar and expand the budget every year to get in the ballpark of the top non-bcs schools.

#79 Mack got benefits in recruiting from June Jones changing the name to Warriors and the Warriors team making it to the Big Time national stage at the 2008 Sugar Bowl. Mack just wasn’t a good head coach and Hawaii suffered because of it, but Mack was a freakin great defensive coach, no doubt. The Rainbow football team is going to sit really well with the top mainland high schoolers that were considering Hawaii but just don’t care to be a Rainbow Football Player. So the top High School talent will go to BYU, Utah, Washington, Boise State or some other school that doesn’t have a loaded nickname, but would have come to Hawaii otherwise. Time will tell if I’m right about football recruiting but the 2013 Warrior class will grad in 2017-18. So after 2018 we should see how the talent level/recruiting was effect by the Rainbow and the fat wallet power brokers decision to change the Football nickname.

Don’t fool yourself, most of the comments on ESPN were not positive ones about the Rainbow nickname. I don’t care about the Basketball, Baseball and the other UH mens sport, since they are not considered hardnose, tough, rugged sports. So they can keep the Rainbow nickname but the Football Program needs a less soft nickname.

  83. Haleakala May 15, 2013 2:25 pm

Enuf about the name. I like Rainbow Warriors much better than being a Duck.

But look where the Ducks are in college football. A name doesn’t mean much in the overall success of a program.

more info on UH and MW

DENVER, Colo. (HawaiiNewsNow) – DIRECTV Sports Networks and the Mountain West Conference have entered into a multi-year agreement, making DIRECTV Sports, and its ROOT SPORTS-branded regional sports network, the regional TV home of Mountain West football and men’s basketball.

ROOT SPORTS Rocky Mountain will annually produce and televise approximately 10 football games featuring Mountain West teams, and a minimum of 25 MW intra-conference and non-conference men’s basketball games, beginning with the 2013-2014 season. All events will be produced and distributed in high definition.

This is the second time in less than two months that the MWC has agreed to a television contract with a secondary provider — CBS still owns the distribution rights of the conference. In late March, the MWC agreed to a multi-million dollar deal with ESPN that allows the network to air up to 22 conference football games – including all Boise State home games – and 31 basketball games annually. The agreement would begin next season and run through 2019-2020.

Between the two networks, up to 44 football and 56 men’s basketball games will be televised annually on their various platforms.

The latest contract will have no effect on the University of Hawaii Men’s or Women’s basketball teams because both play in the Big West. It is not currently known how many — if any — UH football games will be picked up.

  90. kimo browner May 15, 2013 3:21 pm

@ 91. I wasnt aware of that, but included in the Columbus Regional is Hofstra and its ace, Olivia Gulati (37-10), who is currently tied in victories nationally with Kaia Parnaby (37-5).

Hofstra defeated James Madison twice in Tournament play to capture the Colonial Athletic Association Title and earn their 14th trip to the NCAAs. The Pride has won at least two games in every regional in which it has played since 2008, going 8-6 in that span…so, Hofstra, is a worthy opponent for the No 6 seeded Tigers. If the tigers whack Gulati–curtain falls–like Hawaii, Hofstra has no pitching depth.

As I have mentioned, the softball gods positioned Hawaii as good as it gets in the Seattle Region other than hosting.

My main concern as I have reinterated ad nauseum is our defensive vulnerability on the bunt. We are too slow to the ball and in Parnaby’s case, her overhand throw, to put it mildly, is suspect. At this level of play, scouting reports are pretty clear as to strengths and weaknesses and good teams will attack and exploit until you stop them. Minnesota has speed to burn.

I was actually responding to the posts from that “What Is Up” person saying the poll is skewed.

  92. Whats up May 15, 2013 3:39 pm

    Halealakla,

The Oregon Ducks are sponsored by Nike and in the PAC 12, Hawaii is fighting it’s okole off trying to get in the PAC12 and the nickname of Rainbow Football team is not going to help the cause. Thats why Hawaii is not in the PAC 12 because UH administration always was thinking small time in the microcosm of the barely 1 million in population that live in Hawaii. If they thought bigger like June Jones did by changing the product/nickname you get success. But even with June Jones the power players, upper campus, politics gave him excuses about his requests to improve UH facilities and other power plays too. Thats one of the biggest reasons he left because he knew UH admin was small time thinkers and didn’t plan on doing anything to help him build a better product.

And now you think a soft Rainbow nickname is going to bring in top mainland football high school recruits? Because Hawaii has a great head coach in Norm Chow and his name will get some top recruits but now add the geographic location and Rainbow to recruiting it just got that much harder for Norm Chow and his staff to recruit. Norm Chow national reputation is the only real selling point for very young 17-18 year old 3-4 star recruits to commit to the Rainbow Football team. It’s hard enough for Hawaii to keep it’s top 3-4-5 star local boys to stay home, so Hawaii has to recruit the mainland to make up for the top local talent leaving “The Rock”.

Being in Hawaii is not going to do it, it never did, recruiting got better with June Jones and Norm Chow reputation in college football as Hawaii Head coaches. June Jones had a crappy time recruiting and knew he needed to toughen up the Football name to help attract talent. And it worked Hawaii had a lot great seasons under June Jones and even a sugar bowl invite as the Hawaii Warriors. Mack was a bust as head coach but Norm Chow has got the national respect as June Jones but now his recruiting just got that much harder. We, won’t see it until the after the 2017-2018 season, so there is a grace period but this will catch up to bite the Rainbow Football team later.

#83 its ridiculous to think that football kids worry about what their team’s nickname is to decide whether or not to accept a scholarship and a chance to play D-1 football.

Doug Linebacker chose BYU Cougars cuz he likes cats over Washington Huskies ( he don’t like dogs).

    lmao!

your way of thinking suggests, by the end of 2018, UH will have only have gay guys playing football for them.

O.k., first off, aloha to everyone. I’ve been a long time reader of this blog, more for amusement than anything else. Never submitted any comments until now. I am a UH football fan for a long time and will be no matter what the school administration calls them. Why? because it’s Hawaii’s team. Once they strap `em up no one cares what your nickname is. Winning solves everything. Some people even allude to the connection to being gay or something ridiculous like that. If a recruit doesn’t sign with UH because he doesn’t like the name “Rainbow Warrior” then I question his character anyways. Move on and root for the home team. Don’t boycott the games. You’ll just hurt yourselves as fans and the fottball team as a whole. What’s in a name? It’s about competing and winning. That’s all that matters. And now back to your regularly scheduled program……

get chance, but even if it happens, no chance of hosting. the ncaa will ream a greaser right up the okole. history will always repeat itself. easy to write off hawaii when its so far away.

several years ago the wahine vb went to texas and beat them in the 2nd rd (texas was to host a regional), and instead of just staying at texas, the ncaa shipped them off to penn state. wtf. thats how the ncaa rolls. so, again, get chance, but really no mo chance when hawaii is dealing with the ncaa.

    Budget Deficit Reduction Continued

It was a long ride home from Costco in Hawaii Kai to Kailua. Too much time to think.

How about true transparency in contracts?? UH President serves at ‘will of the BOR’ with deliverables identified and salary increases at 3-5-10 years (growing each segment). No tenured parachute and housing at College Hill provided with no alternate housing allowance.

    Aloha Stadium Contract

Non-profit formed to run the stadium (much like UH Foundation). UH oversight (I know that this is a risky suggestion) and State of Hawaii oversight as well. Even better, get M Higa to run the books since she is retiring !!All seats parking, signage, and concession profits go to UH Athletics. Swap meet folks pay their space costs (remember that SA story???) to the non-profit.

I tried to do some math coming home.

UH charges $6.00 for parking in Lower Campus. There is a digital system that provides metrics on how many parking spaces are left at any given time as well as historical data.

Let UH have the $6.00 per space that shows up when there are no athletic contests. Give UH Athletics $5.00 for every space over the non-contest evenings average. $1.00 goes to UH Admin applied overhead and Aampco Parking (spelling?).

1000 boosters/fans show up for a game and that is $$ over the course of BB (M&W) and softball. How many games per sport per season?? This isn’t budget dust we are talking about.

    It all adds up.

Anyone conversant with the marketing operation at UH?

    From Today’s SA poll:

Do you like the decision to name all of the UH men’s sports teams “Rainbow Warriors”?

    A. Yes (60%, 1,511 Votes)

    C. Don’t care (21%, 533 Votes)

    B. No (19%, 457 Votes)

    Total Voters: 2,501

I have always questioned the validity of the Star-Advertiser polls because it has a certain sampling bias. For example: (1) only people with computers (smartphones too) who read the online S-A and bother to take polls will respond. (2) the poll is open for only so many hours in the day shift — those working other shifts might be sleeping and miss the poll.

Bottom Line: limited feedback/access from the entire population and short sampling time. But, with this said, the poll tells me:

Those who are able to get to the S-A site and vote are the same people who could post on blogs here at the S-A site. So, at worst…

60% of bloggers (and lurkers) here are OK with the latest name.

21% of the bloggers here don’t care.

19% of the bloggers keep arguing the issue.

    2013 wahine vball schedule

HONOLULU – The 2013 University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball schedule was announced Wednesday and includes 18 home matches at the Stan Sheriff Center. The schedule features defending national champion Texas and 2012 NCAA Tournament participants UCLA, San Diego, and Santa Clara.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season hosting the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational where they will kick off the 2013 campaign against last season’s NCAA national champion Texas Longhorns on Friday, August 30. UH then plays UTEP on Saturday, Aug 31 and San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 1.

The ‘Bows will then host the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic which will run from Sept. 5-7. UH opens the tournament against last season’s NCAA first round opponent Santa Clara and will also play former Western Athletic Conference foe New Mexico State and 2011 national champion and long-time rival UCLA.

UH wraps up its home tournament schedule with the Verizon Volleyball Challenge beginning Sept. 12, hosting Portland State, Northwestern, and Arizona. The ‘Bows will then travel to Kansas for the Shocker Volleyball Classic hosted by Wichita State, their first out-of-state preseason tournament since 2005.

The Rainbow Wahine will then begin defense of their Big West Conference title when they host Cal State Fullerton at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday, Sept. 27. The ‘Bows will be eyeing their 19th straight conference championship overall, WAC and Big West combined. Last season UH ran the table with a perfect 18-0 conference record.

The ‘Bows went 27-3 last year, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 31st time in program history before falling to Washington in the second round.

    NotNasti,

What up is not a hater but does say things that people don’t like to hear. But the reality of the soft Rainbow Football nickname and the power brokers is real. You can live with the Island blinders on, but there are 350 million Americans on the mainland from the east coast, mid west, the south, Texas (because Texas is not the south but not the west either) all the way to the west coast, from Florida to Washington State, that don’t share in our island vision of Rainbow Warriors Football nickname. And Norm Chow recruits all these regions and if the highly touted 3-4-5 star high school recruit/s and his family/friends don’t care for the nickname, but like Hawaii, but just can’t be a Rainbow for the rest of there life. And Hawaii will have just lost football recruits because of the nickname that could have been avoided altogether in football.

Don’t be silly and take what I say out of context Primo123. Of course, nobody saying that there will only be gay football players on the roster after 2018. But having said that, if a 3-4-5 star gay player can play some football I’m all for it! I’m not going to put my money that Hawaii is going to have 3-4-5 star roster full of awesome Gay football players because the odd are not in Hawaii’s favor, but you never know. Most likely the talent level of football recruits will drop off after 2018 and the effect of the Rainbow will have played a part in it.

The thing about teenagers is you never know, but put a nickname like Rainbow that they have to represent in football forever is a big decision. Hawaii is FBS/D1 but not PAC 12, SEC, B12, B10 and ACC powerhouse BCS/FBS/D1 is it? So go ahead and make a highly touted recruits job easier to go somewhere else, by slapping Rainbow in front is his face, against the Ducks, Cardinal, Sun Devils, Wildcats, Beavers, Seminoles, Hurricane, Gators, Sooners, Tide, Huskies, Arkansas Razorbacks, Boise Broncos, BYU Cougars, Utah Utes, Cal Bears, UCLA Bruins, SDSU Aztecs, Fresno State Bulldogs, AF Fighting Falcons, ND Fighting Irish, Texas Longhorns, SJSU Spartans, Utah State Aggies, Nevada Wolfpack; etc. June Jones knew what he was facing in other schools nicknames. Thats why he killed the Rainbow in Football, because nicknames do matter a lot to recruits, whether you like to believe it or not!

    Who are the Regional spoilers?

Eugene Regional: Wisconsin (BTen Champs have a new hitting guru)

Columbus Regional: Hofstra (Galati is a legit warhorse)

Ann Arbor Regional: California (MICH took and early exit in their Conference T, the Bears have Jolene back from injury)

    Tennesse Regional: Longwood (power hitters)

LSU Regional: La Laf (traditionally tough in the playoffs)

Seattle Regional: Hawaii (Parnaby registers 3-wins in three-days)

S ALAB Regional: FSU (speed on the bases)

Nebraska Regional: Stanford (NEB lost to Minn, Stan humilated CALIF and beat everyone else in the PAC 12 except Oregon))

Louisville Regional: UCLA (peaking at the right time)

Texas AM Regional: Baylor/Ariz (on any given day, the Bears and Wildcats can beat anyone)

OKL, Fla, Texas, ASU, ALAB and Kentucky Regionals strongly favor its host…

I give a rats a$$ about the name. I call the team what I like. What I don’t like is how Jay made himself out to look weak in this whole thing. Whether or not there were big money whatever’s behind the change-back, it doesn’t matter. He still changed his mind due to some sort of pressure. That is what I don’t like.

In the great scheme of things you’ll receive an A for hard work. Where exactly you actually lost everybody ended up being on the facts. You know, as the maxim goes, the devil is in the details… And it could not be more correct here. Having said that, let me tell you exactly what did do the job. The article (parts of it) is certainly incredibly engaging and this is most likely why I am taking the effort in order to opine. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. Secondly, whilst I can easily see the leaps in reason you make, I am not really certain of just how you seem to connect the details which help to make your final result. For right now I will subscribe to your position however wish in the near future you actually connect the dots better.

As Coach Chow said; “It all comes down to putting out an attractive product on the field.” That is the only way you will get the “casual” bandwagon UH fans to come back.

  167. Old School Dave May 16, 2013 7:11 am

“Times are hard here in Hawaii.” I’ve been hearing this for the last 40-years living here. That’s a long time.

  168. Inyoface May 16, 2013 7:12 am

I’m buying shirts that just say Warriors. I’m not supporting anything that has the word Rainbow on it.

  169. Inyoface May 16, 2013 7:27 am

Mainlanders don’t really have big, beautiful rainbows as common as Hawaii or Ireland so it’s not recognized as a symbol or common occurrence. Therefore, the western culture doesn’t have any real connection to it besides being a gay thing. It sad to say but we have to market to the mainland even more so than Hawaii and to be on the same page with the nation as well.
