SAN JOSE — Interesting scene in the hotel lobby last night. The flight crew speed-walked to the registration desk in an effort to beat the Warriors to the check-in. It proved to be unnecessary. The Warriors are experienced trvaelers. They were pre-registered, and soon after arriving at the hotel — from a side entrance — they went straight to a banquet room for their post-flight meal (thick steaks, if you’re keeping track). At the dinner, they were handed their room keys. Then it was off to meetings. A couple of hours after arriving at the hotel, it was time for bed check.

R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane will be a June groom. To prepare, he has decided not to shave his beard until a week before the wedding. He doesn’t quite have the ZZ Top look, but he’s starting to get the appearance of someone who dispenses sage advice.

Forecasts called for a storm last night. That didn’t happen, but folks around here are expecting heavy rain today and possibly tomorrow. That evokes memories of UH’s muddy victory in 2007.

Game passes have been issued to 13 NFL scouts.

During tomorrow’s game, there will be a silent auction, with proceeds going to help families who suffered from the tsunami in American Samoa in September. Isa‘ako Sopoaga, a former Warrior and current 49er, has donated several auction items.

Tomorrow’s game with San Jose State I hope ends with a Warrior triumph. I hope the game ends in an eye-opener. And the players and coaches are gushing with happiness at the end of the game. You see when the team plays well and results favor the Warriors it just makes everything around us better, like the food, drinks, company…and this blog (no?). So, yeah, go Warriors!

That new field turf at SJSU looked nice when ESPN broadcasted their Nevada game.

If it rains hard, hopefully the mud situation will be less severe.

If not, it wil be a Madden game.

So what’s da tsaiko’s plans today given the possibility of manoa mist? The family and I are thinking of doing the Hukilau thing tonight in SJ. For those who are in town, Hukilau is in SJ’s Japantown so there’s many good Japanese restaurants (sushi & ramen) and one awesome Korean restaurant called Omogari. There’s also a ukulele store and halau studio on one of the side streets. Can’t wait BABY!!!!

    ST,

Any idea who the 13 scouts are there to see? I know that Estes has had interest throughout his career, but our o-line has had somewhat of a challenge this year and I also do not put him in the same category as a Samson Satele or a Vince Manuwai as far as talent we have had in the past on the o-line. Although Greg Salas still has at least another year with us, I am sure that scouts have already started to monitor him.

Just received word from our resident Songstress, Nalani Choy. She and the ladies of Na Leo are performing at a very worthy event this Sunday at 11:00 AM. It is sponsored by the Kaiser Permanente Health Care folks down on Pensacola. Lots of food, fun, friends…and hey that sounds like a Tsaiko event!

Check her FB account for more detailed info.

  28. papajoe2 November 20, 2009 10:18 am

for salas to turn pro, he has to learn to hang on to the football after he catches it. he does’t run with the ball secured to his body. in the nfl, they’re going strip him of the ball every time he has it. i hope he doesn’t think he can go to the nfl next year because this is a serious problem with quicker and stronger players that know how to strip a player with the ball. also, is malcom lane returning next year? i hope he learned how to catch the ball. he dropped so many balls last year. some of them at crucial times, like in the end zone, etc.

  32. Derek November 20, 2009 10:49 am

Hawaii will win the game tomorrow on one thing: Ball Security. If they don’t they might lose. All things equal, UH’s offense is light years better than San Jose. I believe the UH defense is a little better than San Jose, based on the statistics. Special teams is a toss up. Whoever plays better special teams might tip the game in favor of who makes more big plays. If UH takes care of the ball I think UH will win comfortably. Prediction: UH 28, San Jose 17.

SteveM- I also passed the message along via A-Joe…

  36. A-House November 20, 2009 11:38 am

Hurricane Relief Fund was created by the Legislature to ensure that Hurricane coverage would be available after many companies decided to abandon this market and those who continued to write would not accept other clients, especially on Kauai.

Because it was band new, unusually high premiums were assessed to “build up the fund”. Unfortunately for those of us who had to use the fund, those rates remained high until it ceased doing business.

The fund did NOT include any “business or commercial” accounts; it was only for owners of dwelling who had lost their Hurricane coverage. It also did not include those homeowners who had the coverage with their insurance company.

Thus, the $218 million excess that exits in the fund today is the OVER PAYMENT of premiums by us who were covered by the Fund. All the money that exist in the Fund today did not come from any tax or assessment.

When asked for a refund, some leader within the Legislature and/or office who handled the Fund, mentioned they had no way to track who paid and how much. Hello, all they had to do was ask the insurance companies for their records as the Hurricane policy was attached to the Homeowners and Fire policies.

The Legislature has NO right to the money!! The premiums we paid was to secure coverage for damages caused by a Hurricane. Some have mentioned the need to leave the Fund intact. I ask, “what for”? Is the Legislature and or Govenor going to use my money to pay for somethnig else? If a Hurricane hits Oahu, how will the $218 million be spent? To help those who never contributed to the Fund? or, help those who paid into the Fund?

  37. papajoe2 November 20, 2009 12:27 pm

#36 i agree with you. i’ve been paying hurricane insurance for along time. if they give me back the money that i paid, i and others can help stimulate the economy by spending our hard earned money. maybe they should make every person in hawaii pay hurricane insurance since all would be affected by a hurricane. don’t just use my money for things other than a hurricane or just give it back.

  38. madeinhawaii November 20, 2009 12:28 pm

    A-House…

Phew.. 218 million is a lot of money… You could fix the public schools… or maybe fill all of UH’s deficit shortfalls for the next decade, or possibly even convert the stadium into a multiplex with facilities to provide emergency services for those displaced by natural disasters.

  39. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 20, 2009 12:31 pm

    A-House:

The Legislature does not have access to nor does it have possession of the Hurricane Relief Fund. It is managed and is under the supervision of the Department of Accounting & General Services headed by Russ Saito.
That’s the way ALL Special Funds are handled.

If you want to see that money is returned to the homeowners who paid into the Hurricane Fund, then you need to get together a group of individuals & businesses who support your position and start calling on state legislators – Judiciary and Money Committees first – to do just that. That, of course, is the first step down the very long road of legislative advocacy.

As mentioned in an earlier post this week, the Legislature can pass a law to return the premium money, move the money into the General Fund to reduce the deficit, keep it where it is JUSTINCASE, or create another Special Fund to address the needs of the elderly, the homeless, school children, etc.etc.

However, the Legislature cannot dissolve the fund, return the money, move it elsewhere or do anything else except let it sit drawing interest under the supervision of DAGS unless it takes action by passing a bill to do whatever has been decided.

Trust me on public policy advocacy stuff. I’ve been doing this since I was in elementary school when I tried to get a bill passed allowing every student to get free lunches so poor kids wouldn’t be picked upon. Nowadays, that’s not an issue since everyone is issued lunch cards that look the same.

  40. madeinhawaii November 20, 2009 12:41 pm

They’ll probably work it out so that the funds will be available for refund long after 99% of the contributors have left this world… sort of like compensation for losses incurred due to internment in WWII.

  41. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 20, 2009 12:45 pm

    madeinhawaii:

There is a difference between capital and operating budgets and the two cannot be switched or money moved from one to the other.

Essentially capital budgets are used to build stuff – road, prisons, schools, etc., and are paid by having the state issue long-term bonds.

Operating budgets pay for salaries, fringe benefits, gas for DOT’s trucks, copy paper, utility bills, etc., etc., and are funded from tax revenues, fees, and fines Because tax collections are down due to the bum economy, there isn’t enough money being generated to pay the bills.

The two choices? Raise taxes, fees & go after federal funds OR reduce expenses by firing employees, putting people on furloughs, or eliminating or shifting services to another level governmental level.

Well, there is a third option, but I really can’t see Lingle & Aiona holding a yard sale to make up the deficits.

  42. papajoe2 November 20, 2009 1:21 pm

sorry, the hurricane comment struck a nerve with me when people mention to use it elsewhere. lets stick to sports for this blog.

  43. A-House November 20, 2009 1:44 pm

    Wassup Doc:

Your #39 you mention that the Legislature does NOT have access to the $$in the Hurricane fund, but in para #3 you say that they can pass a law to transfer the funds.

    I would consider this control.

Anyway, the Fund is sitting there gaining interest every year and the Legislature has already “skimmed” of the interest to apply to budget short falls.

  44. A-House November 20, 2009 1:45 pm

Leilehua up 7-3, playing Baldwin.. Is Whitey at the game? or fishing in Manila?

  78. madeinhawaii November 20, 2009 6:17 pm

Ralph.. Boise wins out.. goes to BCS… good chance Boise gets invited to MWC and then uses the BCS money to pay off WAC fines for leaving the conference. Boise leaves and the WAC suddenly goes in limbo with NMSU and SJSU on the rocks financially and team wise. Our Warrior program depends on the WAC more than we like to admit.

  79. duffer (iPhone) November 20, 2009 6:17 pm

if JD is watching the UH vs BYU game he must be surprised at the number of empty green seats in the lower bowl, can’t see the upper bowl. Our biggest name team, and it is BYU, to come to the SSC this bb season and UH doesn’t have a sell out or near sell out. Just saw a fleeting view of the upper bowl, not packed unless everyone wearing green.

  87. Ralph November 20, 2009 7:07 pm

28-6 Leilehua, almost half time. Whitey must be heading for the exit to the dark side in Happy Valley. Mama San will console him.

    Good evening Chai-kos. 😀

Gotta give props to those that deserve them. Last year, Cal Lee and Alex Gerke went to big island on Coach Mack’s green light and held island wide clinic at Honokaa. giave all the big island high school and pop warner coaches an invite and tutorials. this year Honokaa showed up big and is in State tournament.

    Good for UH!

    Go Warriors!

  89. koakane™ November 20, 2009 7:12 pm

  90. Ralph November 20, 2009 7:12 pm

Lay and Williams on the bench, Hiram is no point, too slow. Lay coming in with just under 12 minutes to go. Where’s Williams?

  91. wafan November 20, 2009 7:21 pm

    koakane . . .

Package sent. Look for it next week — mid to late.

    Enjoy!

  92. Jason November 20, 2009 8:04 pm

Hiram may be slower, but he knows how to run the offense. Williams and Lay still have a lot to learn; my speculation is that they go with the one-on-one game when they don’t know what to do.

  93. Ralph November 20, 2009 8:22 pm

Williams with zero points with 8.31 left in the game, not good for UH. UH down by 19, I guess they are finding BYU a little tougher than the S. Utah and McNeese State teams

  94. Ralph November 20, 2009 8:28 pm

Jason you need 18 wins to go, this game isn’t one of them. 🙂 I texted Kazz but he isn’t answering, he must be in a stupor, shocked, maybe shopping in the rainbowtique.

  100. Ralph November 20, 2009 8:41 pm

Artie keeps saying, the team needs energy, win the battle for loose balls! maybe our players just play slow, or BYU plays fast, so there appears a mismatch in flow of the game and battle for loose balls. I notice BYU getting a lot of lay ups as did N. Colorado. Is it our D or are we that slow?

  101. madeinhawaii November 20, 2009 8:46 pm

I noticed that a few of our players were defending the ball handler with their hands down on their sides … gotta get those hands in the ball handler’s face… keep those arms up and moving… block those passing lanes and obscure the view.

    Great Evening All!

    Whew! Long day.

    wafan,

Arrived this morning and decided to “Chance ’em” to the coast. Turned out to be a good gambit; nice day until we started heading inland this evening.

Time to turn in but just wanted to say…

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WILDCATS X 2!

    Oyasumina-tsai…

  103. RedZone November 20, 2009 9:08 pm

BYU big men run down the court faster than UHs guards.

  104. Ralph November 20, 2009 9:20 pm

are guards are actually faster, but our coaching is slow to respond to the situation and they don’t get after the players to push the “pedal to the metal”, zero game time adjustments. UH practices slow, they also play slow. Remember Nash wanted to run, but they didn’t do it all of last year, and they haven’t utilized their two new guards.

  105. Derek November 20, 2009 9:22 pm

Boise St. is just so goooood! These guys know how to move it and finish it off. They don’t make mistakes. I hope they’ll go all the way, but I think Nevada will give them a very good game next Friday. However, Boise’s defense is a lot stronger than Nevada by a wide margin. I thought Utah St. would play a lot better against Boise because they were at home and they play much better at home…and they were doing well until the ending part of the 2nd quarter when they started to make a couple of bad mistakes and Boise capitalized on it right way and scored 3 quick touchdowns in 5 minutes.

UH basketball is bad…meaning bad. They don’t look athletic, look slow, tentative, and the passing is horrible, careless. The turnovers tell the story. I also believe the coaching is not first rate. The guards cannot penetrate. It looks like a long season. Maybe our best option is to play defense w/ a zone, a 2-3 match up zone. On offense, we should hold on to the ball until the last seconds to use up the alloted 35 seconds before shooting. This keeps the score down. It would be boring, but what the heck…the objective is to win the game. I notice that Hawaii doesn’t play well when it plays fast and it goes helter skelter….they cannot finish the play and they throw the ball away too many times. That’s the sign of a bad basketball team and poorly coached. Hawaii is not the type of team that can score more than 75 points every night. Why go up tempo when we cannot keep up. On to baseball already and men’s volleyball. It’s frustrating watching mediocre play.
Still, we continue to watch…stupid, yeh!

  106. Ralph November 20, 2009 9:33 pm

Derek that’s why more people watch on TV than at the SSC, can swtich channels and watch Leilehua and Baldwin, but the HS fb was also a blowout but more entertaining.

  107. al November 20, 2009 9:37 pm

    Reminder to self.
Self do not check blog when recording hs school football or uh BB.
    Too many kekaula wannabes.

  108. Slugger November 20, 2009 9:41 pm

    d1,

Hope the weather is pleasant for the game tomorrow. Safe travels.

    Good luck to Linfield!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  109. Ralph November 20, 2009 9:51 pm

I saw chawan standing in the SSC during the kitv telecast

  110. Ralph November 20, 2009 9:55 pm

chawan wasn’t wearing green, he had a white t shirt. I guess UH was shooting free throws on his side, no orange coat.

  111. Ralph November 20, 2009 10:12 pm

wvb Stanford in 5 over Arizona, Cal 3-1 over Arizona State, UCLA 3-0 over OSU, USC up 2-0 over Oregon. Washington plays Wazzou tomorrow.

  112. Ralph November 20, 2009 10:14 pm

reminder to Al, don’t forget to read your notes, you’ve written a lot of reminders to self – don’t read the blog while the dvr is running.

  113. Ralph November 20, 2009 10:16 pm

But Al, saving you a lot of wasted time watching two blow outs, UH bb and Leilehua fb. Now you can go out and eat saimin, etc., erase the tape and enjoy your snack.

  114. PONO November 20, 2009 10:23 pm

    ST,
If the Warriors win tomorrow night there is a karaoke bar down the street from Hukilau so let the Lion Sleeps tonight roar.

  115. madeinhawaii November 20, 2009 10:28 pm

  116. Kekoa November 20, 2009 10:33 pm

Al ~ Ralph & Derek are right. Erase the tape!

So slow, thought I was watching a replay of last years team. Zzzzzzz…I fell asleep waiting for them to move the ball around the top of the key.

M-I-H called it earlier on defense. Look ma!…NO HANDS!

  117. al November 20, 2009 10:40 pm

self, watch warrior bb live tomorrow.
ralph will be home come game time.

  118. jm2375 November 20, 2009 10:56 pm

    Evening Tsai-kos!

Too bad for the bb team. I thought they looked better than last year last weekend. I had hope. What happened tonight? Didn’t watch the game and now don’t wanna watch a blowout. One snap and clear?

BTW, for those attending the Warriors game tomorrow, you can hear the KKEA feed in the stadium. Don’t remember the FM frequency.

  119. jm2375 November 20, 2009 10:57 pm

BTW, jason – go Ka Makani!

  125. jm2375 November 21, 2009 12:06 am

    125 and oyasumina-chai.

  126. mctruck November 21, 2009 2:53 am

I think right now, UH-bb has got to keep scheduling the Hilo’s and BYU-Hawaii, etc., to post more w’s….either that, or dump the entire coaching staff, cause they don’t know or unable to recruit quality players or don’t know how to coach or both.

  127. d1島 November 21, 2009 4:37 am

Great Morning All from the wet and chilly PNW!

Sorry to read about the MBB loss last night. Hope they can get it going soon.

I guess the nasty weather is supposed to reach the NorCal area today, too. Good thing they got the Field Turf in San Jose now!

Looks like 50% chance of rain in McMinnville and temps in the low to mid 40’s. Football weather! Supposed to be windy again tonight but with a noon kick-off that shouldn’t affect the game.

Wishing for two great wins today ’cause IT’S SATURDAY!

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WILDCATS X 2!

  128. Kekoa (iPhone) November 21, 2009 7:55 am

Whoa D-1! I get cold chilly wills running up my spine just thinking about low 40’s weather! Brrrr! Excuse me while I throw another log on da fire!

    Go Warriors ‘n Cold ‘Cats!
