Expansion plans?

Word on the boulevard is is that former Kahuku High kicker Cameron Mercado has inquired about joining the Warriors.

Mercado was a one-year wonder known for booming kickoffs and long field goals. He moved to Hawaii in 2009, helped lead Kahuku to the 2009 state championship game, and then moved back to Florida. But Division I offers did not materialize.

If talks progress, he would present an interesting dilemma for the Warriors, who are content with the three kickers who participated in spring training. Tyler Hadden, who is on scholarship, and walk-ons Kyle Niiro and Kenton Chun are all expected to be included on the 105-player roster for training camp.

Happy birthday to Jenny Wilton and Dr. Erika Nash.

Garret – since the stadium authority is underfunded and UH has to play there, it’s not a bad thing that money goes to them and not to UH. It’s all state money in the end and however poorly or well they are run, the bottom line is, the Legislature takes away their money and leaves them to starve. Otherwise your analysis is sound.

    dcwarrior,

I agree that having the Stadium Authority get more money is a good thing and could benefit UH. However, I was just discussing the question if that money could go directly to UH.

I remember all the interest in UH recruiting Cameron Mercado, but the timing didn’t work out then and now UH has 3 kickers. With Hadden on scholarship and D-IA schools limited with scholarships and roster size, it would be a tough situation to give him a scholarship.

If Mercado wants to walk on to UH, he can be told that he’ll get a scholarship *if* he wins the starting job and waits until the following year when a scholarship could be awarded. UH wins either way–they upgrade a kicker and they don’t waste a scholarship unless they get a significant upgrade.

If Mercado can consistently have his kickoffs reach the end zone and Hadden does not…that could change things. I’ve seen schools have a kicker on scholarship just for kickoffs, and with special teams such a big part of the game that makes sense to me.

  4. Garret May 7, 2011 9:01 am

This is probably the worst reason I’ve heard for firing a coach–the members of the boy’s track team were voluntarily taking off their shirts because it was hot…is that a reason to fire someone?

After guiding the 4×800-meter relay team to the New Balance Indoor Nationals less than two months ago and the outdoor team to a 5-0 start this spring, Westwood High School boys track coach Tom Davis was fired and escorted off the property at the high school on Friday.

Davis said the incident was about members of his team practicing without a shirt.

Davis, who was in the middle of his second year with the outdoor team, said he first heard about complaints about running shirtless a couple weeks ago and that Westwood High athletic director Karl Fogel told him that the administration was discussing the issue and that there was no rule against it, but that there were people who did not want them running shirtless.

    Maybe UH should blueshirt Mercado?

    Text me at 256-0223.

  8. Garret May 7, 2011 9:13 am

    ST,

A blueshirt is promised a scholarship…I wouldn’t promise him a scholarship unless one of these things happen:

    1. He beats out Hadden and the other kickers

    2. He consistently reaches the end zone on kickoffs

  9. Stephen Tsai May 7, 2011 9:16 am

The concern entering the spring was kickoffs. Looks like Hadden can kick deep. Chun and Niiro were bonuses as field-goal kickers. Chun is really accurate.

  10. papajoe2 May 7, 2011 9:18 am

Still can’t get over last nights exciting softball D1 final. Congrats to all the participants.

Is the MPI picther a UH recruit? Early commit?

  12. RedZone May 7, 2011 9:28 am

I agree ppj2. Great game last night. MpI pitcher changeup was something else. I thought i heard the announcers say she was a verbal commit but I am not sure.

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

papajoe – Keiki Carlos, the MPI pitcher has verbally committed to UH for the 2013 season.

  15. SteveM May 7, 2011 9:33 am

    Good morning everyone!

Good luck to Cameron Mercado! Interesting situation for the “new” Special Teams coach to sort out.

  16. Garret May 7, 2011 9:36 am

    ST,

If Hadden can get kickoffs deep, that will be a huge boost to the team. With Hadden, Niiro, and Chun on the 105-man roster, Mercado will have to be awesome to get a scholarship.

  17. Old Diver May 7, 2011 9:43 am

If running without a shirt during track practice meant the firing of a track coach in Hawaii we wouldn’t have any track coaches left.

  18. d1shima May 7, 2011 9:45 am

Need to be sure his academics are in order. Seems like the semester spent on the North Shore was more about getting on a nationally recognized team than anything else.

Nothing against someone looking for an opportunity but it may be worth looking into why no other DI schools offered.

  19. RedZone May 7, 2011 9:54 am

Is Mercado still at Santa Rosa Junior College?

  20. Hilo Moon May 7, 2011 9:58 am

Here is a statistic I never heard of or thought about — percentage of “hitting” the end zone on kickoffs. Obviously, 100% is the ideal, but is that doable? Are there stats regarding this?

And if there are, what percent should a kicker be “around” to be considered for a scholarship?

  21. Stephen Tsai May 7, 2011 10:02 am

    Hilo Moon:

In the cumulative stats, they list the kickoff distance. Enos average 59.2 yards per kickoff last year. But he was asked to pooch and coffin-corner his kicks, so the numbers are skewed.

  22. Stephen Tsai May 7, 2011 10:04 am

Of Enos 101 kickoffs, five were touchbacks. Of course, that does not indicate how many of his kickoffs went into the end zone and were returned.

  23. NYUH May 7, 2011 10:07 am

Great, no more…. what did they call those kicks?? poodle… pussy… pooch kicks

  24. Kazz May 7, 2011 10:09 am

Keiki Carlos – 2012 verbal commit.

JM, that always confused me since softball is a spring sport. I guess they (NCAA/UH) has been counting the fall softball exhibition season. Technically I can understand since Carlos would be graduating MPI NEXT calendar year and registering with UH Manoa in the fall of 2012 into the 2013 spring season.

  25. Kazz May 7, 2011 10:10 am

Jessica Iwata should be in the national statistics after this weekend in number of homers. I think she has 15 so far. She really is on a hitting tear. Reminds me of last year when she won National Player of the Week.

  49. Lanaiboy May 7, 2011 11:22 am

According to the SJSU website (LiveStat) San Jose has zero attendance and the weather is “sunny and nice.”

  50. Kazz May 7, 2011 11:23 am

The weather is accurate. Attendance is probably correct as well.

  51. d1shima May 7, 2011 11:29 am

I watched Sport Science on ESPN this morning. The episode featured top draft selectees including Dareus, Fairley, Peterson, Dalton, etc.

Aside from how freakish these guys numbers are it is interesting how they compare to current NFL’ers who have been measured in this show. The players keep getting bigger, faster, stronger and more talented.

It’s really important for a college player to come out with his class (or earlier) or risk being passed by in a short amount of time.

As the Blog Host has mentioned, it’s going to be really critical for the Warriors from this past season that the labor dispute get settled before this season.

Regarding Colt Brennan’s chances. Things gotta be really faltering between slim and none but as a fan I gotta keep pulling for him.

  52. d1shima May 7, 2011 11:32 am

  57. Lanaiboy May 7, 2011 12:08 pm

Surprising. Nevada beat Fresno State in the 1st half of the doubleheader 8-4. This means that New Mexico State and Boise State will be fighting for the conference championship.

From the archives exactly 4 years ago today…

    Comment from: RIch2176 [Visitor]

    UH/UNLV TICKET UPDATE

I’ve got requests for over 60 tickets. I spoke with the Director of Athletic Ticketing at UNLV and we will probably get some sort of group discount. (Regular sidelines seats are $30. I think he mentioned $21 for the group rate, but I won’t know for sure until the tickets are purchased. Plan on $30 for budgeting purposes.) Until season ticket sales are completed, the UNLV ticket office won’t know the number of seats available in specific sections. However, when I told him that I’m probably capping off the Tsaiko group at 100, he said there shouldn’t be a problem.

I received the order form from the UH ticket office today, but they aren’t offering the group discount rate and are charging $5 handling per ticket. Also, UNLV hasn’t told UH where their seats are either.

I will travel to Vegas and pick up the tickets directly from the ticket office on July 23. Once tickets are secured, I’ll contact everyone as to how they want to get the tickets and how they would prefer to reimburse me.

    05/07/07 @ 11:34

Fast forward past 2009 (215 tickets) to this year…

    UH vs UNLV 2011

Okay folks, now that spring is here and I’ve gotten through visiting the tax man, it’s time to start organizing for the game. My hat goes out to SteveM for compiling the preliminary ticket count, which is currently at 77. A few of you have emailed me with ticket requests. I’m not sure what happened to those emails. PLEASE email your ticket requests to SteveM so I can get an idea of how many tickets to get this year.

As in past years, UNLV won’t sell tickets to the general public until season ticket holders get first crack. If I can’t somehow use my charm to get the tickets earlier, I will fly to Vegas the first day of ticket sales and see what kind of block I can get. Regardless, I should know how much the tickets will be prior to flying out there, and I will pass them along to you at cost. (Of course, an extra $1 or $2 to cover my travel costs is always appreciated, but not required.)

Use stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com or any other email addy/means you might know. Also note that your number of tickets requested is understood to be tentative for now. Final confirmation later.

This is the 3rd time Rich2176 is generously doing this, so there is not much uncertainty or mystery involved here. Same with Rasu Begasu’s tailgate buffet and optional bus. Please provide any other info and tentative RSVP requests as listed at:

t-e-n-a-c-i-t-y That’s what Steph showed at the end of the second game. My hat’s off to her. Runners got on (she must of been tiring) but she wouldn’t let them score. The tournament is going to be full of drama this year with USU, Fresno, NMSU and Hawaii going tooth and nail.

I’m beating myself about the head and shoulders with really nasty wet noodle as penance for my lack of faith…I turned off the radio after the first couple of innings of the baseBows game. I didn’t want to hear another mercy rule game. Proud of the team, embarrassed in myself. Yikes!

  71. papajoe2 May 7, 2011 1:21 pm

PolyMom, Shucks, I’m home now in the islands. I was in Hermosa from April 15-19 with my daughter and grand daughter. We ate many meals by the Pier. I didn’t call RanbowCliff because I knew I wouldn’t have much time to spend with him although I wore the Super Bowl t-shirt that he sent me over there. My daughter lives a couple blocks from the Pier. We were at the keiki drum celebration below the pier on one of the days (Sat.,Sun.???). My daughter is looking for another place there after June (lease expires). She really likes the place and has quite a few friends there.

4 kickers at UH? I remember a few years ago that we had no quality kickers. They would shank left, shank right, while the other team said “shank you very much”. An article in the Advertiser even said that a local high school kicker did a better job. Take the best of them and don’t look back.

  77. Garret May 7, 2011 2:18 pm

UH needs the companies in Hawaii to perform strongly, as that leads to greater donations. High tech companies are particularly helpful since their workers make high salaries and a lot of income can be generated in a single building.

I mentioned how Micron was giving the Boise economy a boost last year–they are Boise-based and bought Numonyx last year for $1.27 billion. Their annual revenue was at the $8 bil to $10 bil pace before that acquisition, so they may go well past $10 bil/year once they integrate Numonyx. Micron makes chips, such as the memory chips for smartphones like the iPhone.

When companies are doing well, especially high tech companies that need well trained work forces, they tend to donate generously to the local University to upgrade the University–giving them a better supply of workers for those $100k+ jobs.

Last October, Micron gave Boise State $12.5 mil to lead the drive for their new Micron Business and Economics building.

    http://news.boisestate.edu/update/2010/10/25/groundbreaking-for-new-micron-business-and-economics-building-set-for-tuesday/

On Thursday, BSU announced that Micron is donating $13 mil for the development of a PhD program in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. That is a *huge* boost to their academic side.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Boise-State-to-Receive-pz-2905617224.html?x=0

The buildings constructed from past donations hired a Boise-based construction company for the job, boosting their economy. Micron is trying to boost BSU’s academics because they want to hire their graduates…and BSU graduates with big salaries will end up being donors to BSU of course.

So many of the buildings at Texas and Stanford that I had classes in and did research in were donated by high-tech companies located near the campuses. UH doesn’t have that type of ecosystem, so they have to look at the state for money for buildings and maintenance. When a school doesn’t have to pay for the buildings to be constructed and/or renovated, it is much easier to pay for maintenance of the buildings.

So many people make fun of Boise State’s academics…but under Pres. Kustra, their academics have improved very quickly. With their local economy expanding and certain companies doing well and donating major money to the school, their academic side will continue to improve. If similar types of companies don’t emerge in Hawaii soon, UH will end up permanently tied to the state for any improvements.

I know that there are people in the Legislature that are working on trying to boost the high tech industry in Hawaii. Past efforts haven’t accomplished what is needed though and I know first-hand about roadblocks preventing even a single building from being established for high-tech companies to move operations to Hawaii. *If* something isn’t done to fix this, we could someday see BSU past UH on the academic side…and that would be really sad.

  81. madeinhawaii May 7, 2011 2:32 pm

Maybe Hawaii needs to develop a solid alternate energy dept at UH with projects that are funded by the State and outside sources.

My wife and I were just saying that today’s kids really have it hard, education wise. They need to know more than their parents did by the time they graduate from high school. By the end of intermediate, they need to know what their parents knew coming out of high school. Unfortunately, they need all this when the education budget is being squeezed dry.

I think Coach Coolen should checkout that 3rd base player for MPI. She has a good arm, speed, size and can hit. I think she is a junior so would be a 2013 commit. We have so many good local softball players. Just look at all the players doing well on the mainland.

In regards to Mercado, I would be leery about the father who would search for a school for his son out of Florida with only one year left in high school. I wonder what kind of problems he would present for any coaching staff. Hopefully I am wrong with this scenario.

Patek, McMackin, Donovan to chat this week

    Here’s this week’s chat schedule:

Tuesday: UH safety Jacob Patek., 3 p.m.

Wednesday: UH defensive coordinator Greg McMackin, 1 p.m.

Friday: Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl executive director Jim Donovan, 11 a.m.

    * * *

June Jones said graduate assistant Brian Kajiyama’s duties will be primarily during game week. That means Kajiyama, who is in a wheelchair, would not need to use the coaches’ booth on the loge level at Aloha Stadium.

Even if Kajiyama does not need the booth, it still would be a good idea for Aloha Stadium to make sure the booth meets ADA accessibility standards. Right now the only way to access the level — which is shared by the coaches, media, the UH president and his guests, and boosters — is by descending several stairs.

    Need some advice:

What’s the best way to fly from Vegas to Florida (Gainesville)?

We’ve been looking forward to the Florida game ever since it’s been announced. We’ll be flying to Vegas to meet up w/my brother & then on to Florida. After we’ll go back to Vegas & then home.

Anyone (hopefully Ted is checking back later) have any suggestions? Any recommendations on hotels in the area?

    Stephen,

Can you shed some light if HF and JJ’s people have begun contract negotiations?

I think your paper stated that it expired in June 2008? I hope HF signs JJ to another 5 year deal by the beginning of this year’s football season.

HF better not take JJ for granted as it wouldn’t surprise me if HF walked away after this year. Too much drama with the schedule, etc.

    Good morning all…

Well, UH/Stadium need to make accommodations for BK..that man is awesome and an inspiration.

Did anyond catch Leahey and Leahey, the tv show, on Wednesday or Sunday. They had a discussion about the Pro Bowl possibly changing venues in the near future. One of the reasons was the conditions at Aloha Stadium. I for one would like to see the stadium rebuilt rather than refurbished. What do you guys think?

    GO WARRIORS!!!

The stadium should be built in Kapolei where there is lots of space and the mass transit system will be in place for fans to use.

I think we should build it in the water, like they did that airport in Japan (see link for wikipedia article above).

Just don’t kill any surf spots.

Oh wait…let’s not put it in the water.

We like your creative thinking John, but I refuse to pay 13.00 for a pack of Marlboro Lights to fund that adventure.

    05/07/07 @ 16:14

    Comment from: ted domay [Visitor]

We’ve had that stadium discussion awhile back and back then I proposed the following: Privatize the whole venture to a Cruise line and a Hotel chain. Build a giant Cruise ship with the stadium inside. No parking problems and we could bring our own stadium to road games. In international waters gambling would be allowed and every game would be a sell out. UH would have the biggest budget of any school. Bwahahahaaa.

    05/07/07 @ 16:32

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

Ted, nice suggestion but no cigar. Think how seasick everybody would be.

The quarterback would have to develop sea legs, too, to get used to the pitching and rolling of the ship.

    05/07/07 @ 16:35

Comment from: John from San Diego [Visitor]

You don’t need sea legs for a cruise ship. Unless there’s heavy weather, I don;t think you can feel any roll or pitch.

You need to avoid multiple trips to the buffet on cruise ships–you have a greater shot of getting sick from overstuffing yourself.

    05/07/07 @ 16:43

    Comment from: gigi-hawaii [Visitor]

John, you are very lucky. I sailed between islands and was really seasick despite taking a lot of Dramamine. I got seasick on a catamaran, too.

    05/07/07 @ 16:49

Comment from: John from San Diego [Visitor]

I think by expecting to get sea sick, you may have made yourself more sea sick.

There’s no question that being on the water throws you off a little but being anxious about it may have amde it worse.

    05/07/07 @ 16:54

    Comment from: ted domay [Visitor]

Kazz, John from San Diego, If they’re working on the same page, somebody must have lost the page.

Gigi, sea sickness varies from individual to individual. We have a little thing in our inner ear that’s somewhat like a water weight, with a little bubblelike feature that gives you balance and lets you know where up or down etc is. If that bubble adjusts a little slower than normal, your balance is somewhat off and thus the nausea. Sometimes it gets stuck and causes what is called vertigo, the feeling of spinning. If that happens, tilt your head sideways and tap strongly on your head with the palm of your hand. By the way, on an ocean liner of this size the roll would be practically imperceptiple.

Madeinhawaii, I was semi joking, It would be great, don’t you think? But a Liner that size would probably be from 2-3 Billion.

    05/07/07 @ 17:56

    Comment from: Kazz [Visitor]

    Ted,

2-3 Billion for a “Stadium Liner” eh???

Hmm I can see it now.

    Cheesesteak Sandwich-$27.00

    32 oz. Marzen Lager-$18.00

    End Zone Seats-$75.00 (per game)

    ………….

    05/07/07 @ 18:09

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

ted domay and madeinhawaii — regarding a football field on a cruise ship: it is probably possible today, but some cruise line or enterprise will have to pick up on it.

Cruise ships of 1,100 feet, 180 foot beams, and 160,000+ gross tons are already built (e.g. Royal Carribbean’s Freedom of the Seas) and more coming out in the next few years. Sacrifice a lot of pool and sun deck area but you can put a football field on easily. [without overhanging the side of the ship– a football field with end zones is 360 feet long and 160 feet wide]

Very few sideline seats so camera’s and big screen TV’s in the numerous lounges will have to suffice. The ultimate hotel and tail gate party. Crazy?

    05/07/07 @ 18:11

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

Did a little more research on the M/V Freedom of the Seas. Cost $800 million to build. Started service in 2006.

A football field top probably wouldn’t affect cost significantly.

    05/07/07 @ 18:29

    Comment from: al [Visitor]

ted, maybe we label it a riverboat stadium and then apply for an on board casino like they do on the missouri. i bet they sell it out every night.

    05/07/07 @ 19:59

the middle of the defense is more important than the ba of those in these positions.

however, having ones who can hit such as iwata and majam makes for a good team.

klibenstein has been a pleasant surprise behind the plate and at bat. hasn’t she hit more hr’s this year than in her senior hs year.

this allows us to field a 2nd baseman with glove first theory.

the transition to D1 has been a big jump for Nakao and Zamora, both of whom did well in HS and Club offensively, their defense is legit but Coolen wants someone who can hit to fill the second base slot. Lots of girls rotated at second this season, its their lack of hitting that keeps the rotation on going.

Sharla was quoted as saying that the UH weight training program to develop her leg strength has contributed to her power surge and she mentioned that she didn’t realize she could generate a lot more bat speed and power by using her legs to hit.

  168. Ralph May 8, 2011 1:25 am

Back to Jordie, of her 24 hits she has 3 doubles, a triple and 4 homers, that’s 30% of her hits for extra bases. I am assuming her 76 at bats does not include the 13 walks, and 89 at bats with 2 games to go in the regular season is a lot compared to what local girls see in a HS season. Add the 24 hits with the 13 BB over 89 bat appearance and she has an On Base average of about 42%

For smartphone/tablet memory and logic chips, the 2 dominant companies are Micron and Samsung. As smartphones and tablets grow (and cars are increasingly using these chips also), those chips grow in sales and cost. Micron is permanently located in Boise–it would be far too expensive for them to move. Samsung has 1 US plant…located in Austin.

An Austin-based construction company is getting the $3.6 billion construction job to expand Samsung’s already huge factory. Samsung is throwing tens of millions at UT-Austin to upgrade their Engineering education and tens of millions at UT-Austin professors for the latest research to upgrade their products. Undergrads and grad students know that if they do well in school they have a guaranteed high-paying job there, and Samsung gives a lot of scholarships and summer jobs also.

Samsung is spending $3.6 bil to expand its only factory in the US to make logic chips that analysts believe will go into iPhones and iPads. The 2.3 million square foot facility will be one of the largest factories of any kind in North America. Samsung specifically said that one reason they chose to locate their factory in Austin is because of the large number of engineers that UT-Austin produces:

If Hawaii doesn’t have have an industry or set of companies that relies on UH grads for their work force, then why should UH expect those companies to pay for buildings at UH or donate millions? There are industries like green energy that UH and the state could take a leadership position and I know the Legislature has talked about that (even with me on several phone calls). But California and Arizona Universities (who are far ahead of UH in this area) have the collaboration deals with Japanese Universities and the Japanese government for green energy.

Venture capital firms have been pouring hundreds of millions into green energy companies the past couple of years…have any Hawaii-based companies gotten those investments? San Diego has gotten the solar cell manufacturing, LA got the electric car deal with China, and the Bay Area got more than half of all the US green energy money. All of those companies are located near Universities, and faculty research and student ability levels are major factors in attracting companies.

I guess my point is that UH cannot just rely on the state of Hawaii to give it money (especially in times when the state is broke) and needs to work with industry to help attract businesses to the area. If UH grads have to go to California or elsewhere to get high-paying tech jobs, then the companies they work for will donate to schools in their area. Public schools like Boise State and Texas don’t get ANY tax dollars for their new buildings or Athletic facilities–they have to get donations from industry, alumni, and they take out loans to pay for it themselves. UH just has its hand out for the Legislature while other public Universities are making money for their cities and get their money from private donations and local industry.

UH’s fate is tied to the industry in Hawaii. The industrial base in Hawaii is directly tied to Hawaii’s economic future. UH and the state have to think of ways to focus efforts to boost industries than can grow in Hawaii. If we the powers that be don’t think about things differently, UH will just keep relying on tax money and things can stay the way they are with Hawaii’s economy. WassupDoc has some really good ideas in this area and spent so many hours working on trying to get something done, but it is amazing how many roadblocks there can be.

    Garret,

Times are tight. The only industry tie-in that has ever mattered in Manoa is TIM.

The travel industry is a big union stronghold in Hawaii and the other one is the government itself. Don’t expect any movement that doesn’t advance those two sectors to expand any time soon.

About stealing a base with a big lead in the last inning, in the softball championship game, in extra innings with a five run lead, the wining team did a squeeze. I also witnessed a few years ago, in HS soccer playoff game, with a player laying down with a obvious injury, the other team got the ball at midfield and went through the injured player to score the winning goal. In major league baseball, there would be a bases clearing brawl for those attempts. In soccer, it is a common courtesy to kick the ball out of bounds when a player on the other team is injured. I’ve rarely seen it done in Hawaii in soccer or baseball. Coaches must be under too much pressure to teach the team sportsmanship. Win any way you can.
