Green to all-star game, Letuli gets agent

alex

Former UH running back Alex Green has been told he will be invited to play in the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game in February.

Green will sign with an agent today, and train at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Former UH offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli has reached an agreement with agent Leo Goeas, a former Warrior lineman who played eight seasons in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos.

Because Letuli is in California and Goeas in Hawaii, where he relocated recently from Colorado, the contract will be mailed today.

Letuli will train with Chad Ikei in Arizona.

By the way, it’s Pepa’s birthday today.

Not all dreams are the same.

Scott Enos, who concluded his UH kicking career with the Hawaii Bowl,  will not hire an agent nor leave school. His two-step goals are: 1) to get healthy, and 2) to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Enos played the entire season with an arthritic lower back, a condition that often made it painful to kick. But with no backups, he played the whole year without complaints. He is set to graduate next December.

Look for punter Alex Dunnachie to try to practice kickoffs during the offseason.

* * * * *

Former UH defensive backs Jeramy Bryant and Mana Silva are interviewing agents this week.

* * * * *

Thinking aloud:

• Now that a ballpark figure for travel subsidies has been established, isn’t this the part where the new governor or UH president says that the state, travel industry or university will pick up the tab?

• Or, since the contracts have been signed, what if UH does not agree to pay the high travel fees? Contracts are signed. The membership can’t be rescinded, right?

• UH should sell two-year, season-ticket packages. That way it can: 1) project budgets a year in advance. 2) take advantage of the enthusiasm of joining the MWC.

• There’s going to be a ring ceremony. Make it a public event. Say, for $10, fans get to attend the ceremony where snacks and beverages will be served. They can cheer  each player receiving a ring, then take pictures and get autographs. Proceeds would go to Na Koa.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

It is truly amazing what our student athletes go through to get their education and play sports. I had a hard enough time just trying to stay in school.

Good to hear that we are working on Field Position on kickoffs already! It can only pay off! Love the attitude and work ethic of our Warriors!

A team with no complainers wtih both players and coaches is nirvana. Something that might happen on occasion, but very rare. In fact, might not happen at all.

A fan base with no complainers is Total Nirvana. A place that doesn’t exist.

  8. Kekoa December 29, 2010 6:23 am

Very good D-1…you may now try for the hat trick tomorrow.

    Alex might be the answer!

  9. CoolEthan December 29, 2010 6:24 am

Way to go Mr. Enos. An athlete to look up to. Kickers get no respect, but he does from me.

  10. mctruck December 29, 2010 6:25 am

Whaaaat-dah????, been a while since I cracked the top ten……who-hoooo!!

dat being said…congrats to former players determination to get that degree; dats something one can count on for a solid future, afterall, not everyone will become a prefessional fb player on the next level.

Bighilofan2: Thank you for the clarification to sailor blue. From my understanding then there are two Mr. and Mrs as I will get BOTH of them a nice UH Warrior apparel. I got Mr. Sailor Blue size xxl then what is Mrs sailor blue size ?

Can you or any one out there can get back to me with that info as the rains has stopped and in the next hour I will like to get out and drive LA. Once I get the gifts n kind do I send it to you to give too them as I don’t want items to get lost or mishandle by false delivery ?

    Mahalo !

  12. gigi-hawaii December 29, 2010 6:49 am

    Hi ST and Tsaikos!

Good luck and best wishes to Mr. Enos. Kicking with an arthritic back and getting it done each and every time is simply awesome! Mahalo!

    Hi Liz! How was CATS???

  13. Garret December 29, 2010 7:02 am

Or, since the contracts have been signed, what if UH does not agree to pay the high travel fees? Contracts are signed. The membership can’t be rescinded, right?

I thought that UH wasn’t actually *paying* the money to each school, but the money was going to be taken out of UH’s share of the conference revenue and added to the other team’s shares of conference revenue. That makes more sense than having checks being sent all over the place from UH–the conferences will take care of thepayment.

  14. Old Diver December 29, 2010 7:13 am

    Thinking aloud,

It’s too early for anyone to pickup the travel cost sharing because I don’t believe JD has been able to come up with concrete travel costs yet. That is the first anyone will ask JD.

The cost sharing may be written into the contracts, so trying to get out of paying travel subsidies could violate the contract leaving us back in the WAC.

Two year season tickets sound like a great idea.

Are the mainland seniors planning to come back to attend the ring ceremony?

  15. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2010 7:16 am

    Re: Mainland seniors.

    Probably not.

I do remember that in 2008, when I went to the NFL combine, I had to bring rings to Brennan, Rivers and Bess. Grice-Mullins’ ring was mailed to him later because he exceeded the letter limit.

  16. jojo ® December 29, 2010 7:20 am

    Good morning!

    Finishing school, wise decision

  17. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 7:21 am

I agree with Garret, but once we agree to pay hard to go back on your words.

MWC Revenue Sharing is the preminent equivalent for all conference members to share travel cost so that UH is not alone in heavy consignment of travel expenses. Plus if they are not taking into concider the 13th game as extra revenue should be going back to MWC Revenue Sharing to adjust cost of travel to Hawaii.

  18. BigHiloFan2 December 29, 2010 7:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

  19. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 7:38 am

Selling two-year, season-ticket packages is great but will be more of a commitment from the Warrior fans.

Is there other Big time Conferences selling a two year package?

We may lose even more season ticket holders by doing that but would also give the hard core fans a chance to move up in their section.

I think $10 for the ring ceremony for fans who want autograph but make it a free public event for fans who just wants to attend is nice for families with kids.

  20. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 7:41 am

But then again will the NCAA allow that UH charge $10 autograph session?

  21. jm2375 December 29, 2010 7:42 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Best wishes to all the seniors in their future life pursuits.

    kden

    gotta go. hi ho

    esme wooooshhhhhhhhhhhhh

  24. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2010 7:49 am

I think the best way to do it is to tell people that if they buy a two-year season ticket, they either get a discount on the premium fee or the ticket price is locked in for two years. If it goes up in 2012, they still would be paying the 2011 prices.

I also would offer season-ticket discounts to graduating students. They still are dizzy with enthusiasm for their school, but not yet financially stable, so they can buy season tickets at a price somewhere between the student fee and a regular season ticket.

  25. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2010 7:51 am

    Ring ceremony:

You sell it as a UH fund-raising party. Part of the entertainment is the ring ceremony.

IF, say, Bryant Moniz so happens to be around to sign autographs, then that’s the bonus. I think as long as the players don’t get fed or paid, everything is legit.

  26. CoolEthan December 29, 2010 7:54 am

Didn’t know that McMackin was raised in Cody, WY.

Best night rodeo in the country.

  27. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2010 7:54 am

People always say if UH gets charter flights, it should sell some empty seats to fans.

    Well, UH flies commercial.

But I imagine Panda Travel could sell tour packages in which fans are booked on the same flight as players. (Warning: It’s not very pleasant to travel with players or coaches since they tend to take up a lot of room.)

  28. Slugger December 29, 2010 8:00 am

    Good morning!

I like the ideas, ST. If not two-year season ticket packages, collect a deposit for next season before a deadline (i.e., before the end of the current season) and offer season tickets at a guaranteed current ticket price.

Good luck to Pepa, Salas, Mana, Jeramy in their FB futures!

Hurrah for Scotty in working toward his degree! Get healthy!

I’ve always thought Alex Dunnachie would be great as a kicker. He could possibly kick 50 yd. FGs.

  29. LizKauai -iPad December 29, 2010 8:03 am

gigi- Cats is one of my fave productions. Except for a couple of minor lighting miscues and a mic or cable short, i think opening night went very well. The only warnings would be to those sensitive to strobe lights and stage mist or smoke.

I always have the highest respect for people who can sing while dancing (Liza Minelli comes to mind). Everything was top-notch as they advertise – Broadway in Hawaii.

  30. CoolEthan December 29, 2010 8:06 am

No difference with the concept of selling seats to fans if flying charter, versus Commercial.

Main point is to just get them there in a reasonable time. Count blessing it’s not the cruise ship method anymore.

  31. LizKauai -iPad December 29, 2010 8:07 am

Ring Ceremony would be awesome. Let the fb season roll!

Season tix for me (and 2011 should be an excellent year!) is not the prob.. It’s the cost of travel. I bet if a local airline were to set up special midnight sections to get folks home after games, more neighbor isle folks would come.

  32. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 8:07 am

I think offering a season-ticket discounts to graduating students is a great idea who wants to continue supporting but not yet financially able. If I was still a students I’ll make a two year commitment to the program at a discount yet!

Maybe the student section can be expanded and can be filled than it is now.

  33. Slugger December 29, 2010 8:11 am

Tyler Hadden looked good in practices as a kicker, too. Only remember seeing Kyle Niiro practice a couple of times.

  34. Bigislandkurt December 29, 2010 8:12 am

SMU Mustang Fans: It’s not a matter of “if,” but “when” he leaves. Don’t be too excited about he not taking the Maryland job. There will be several high profile NFL openings coming up soon. Stay tuned…

    BIK

  35. gigi-hawaii December 29, 2010 8:12 am

    Liz,

glad you enjoyed this week’s production.

I saw CATS in NYC and also in Honolulu, so didn’t want to see it a 3rd time.

I hope more Broadway musicals will make it here.

  36. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 8:18 am

I’ve asked Panda before to fly on same flight but was not allowed. Even if not very pleasant or not to travel with players or coaches, I’ll be the first in line to travel on same fight and be able to stay in the same hotel as in Sugar Bowl time. That was a wild time eddied.

I’m still waiting to happen again and next year seem a great year to happen again!

    Go Warriors.

  37. LizKauai -iPad December 29, 2010 8:18 am

gigi- I only saw the vid before this. The Pekes and Pollicles number is replaced by a nautical number with Siamese that I was u familiar with.

Front row, center balcony seats were perfect.

  38. LizKauai -iPad December 29, 2010 8:20 am

Good luck to Alex and Laupepa… REPRESENT!

  39. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 8:29 am

I don’t think JJ is interested in ever going back to NFL. ( can’t say ever but time is ) He is not engrossed in $$$ but commitment in building a program. I was sitting next to the owner of SD Chargers on return flight from New Orleans Sugar Bowl, who was trying (I’m sure) to lure JJ back to NFL back then. I’m quite sure will not leave until SMU goes to BCS Bowl game just like he did at UH Warriors program.

  40. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 8:35 am

After he sends SMU to BCS Bowl, JJ will come back to retire at his ranch in Big Island.

And he can do it again for the Warriors to go bak to BCS Bowl again! Life is Full of Circles.

  41. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2010 8:35 am

    Okole:

UH usually flies Hawaiian to the West Coast on the Wednesday before games.

  42. A-joe December 29, 2010 8:36 am

We, as fans, need to step up and continuously give money. I mean SERIOUS cash! That’s how all the other big programs do it. Plain and simple.

    Or

We need a Maverick investment manager who’ll waive all performance fees and create a hedge fund that will directly benefit the UH athletic department.

Any T. Boone Pickens in the house?

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2010 8:38 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Good Luck to Green and Laupepa! Prayers for Kealoha!

Dunnachie has the leg strength to boot it outta the end zone. Hopefully he can master kick offs well enough to do so.

  44. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2010 8:40 am

Would the team and its coaches and entourage want to have ordinary folks along on a charter flight? Do other schools offer such a thing?

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2010 8:40 am

    Howzit Hawaiian!

  46. LizKauai -iPad December 29, 2010 8:41 am

JJ chose to coach UH when he was being wooed by the NFL.

We are lucky to have HC’s who are motivated by love for the game, the students, and the srt of teaching…

  47. LizKauai -iPad December 29, 2010 8:44 am

No job security in the NFL. Need more owners willing to DEVELOP a team.

  48. greenthumb December 29, 2010 8:44 am

#31 — adding midnight flights to Neighbor Islands on game nights makes sense from fans’ point of view. UH could do a lot with this. Actually so could someone like Panda by laying on roundtrip bus transfers between the airport and the stadium. Next question is to think of how to pitch it to the airlines, either in terms of what to do with the inbound flight to HNL that would be a new section, and/or perhaps leaving the Saturday inbound schedule alone and having the return flight replace the earliest outbound-from-HNL Sunday-morning flight for positioning the aircraft. (I would guess we just still call the first flight the “bread flight” from habit, not reality, at least on Sundays.)

  49. anklebiters December 29, 2010 8:51 am

You could also have the rental car/hotel industry levy a ‘UH tourist’ fee on each rentals and rooms to help subsidize the travel fees. We should be able to stick it to them too like the MWC will be doing to us 😆

Have you taken a look lately at a rental car receipt when you return it ❓ Myriads of taxes and fees added on, almost exceeding the cost of the rental itself, especially if you rent from the airport ❗

They did that here to help build the pro stadiums and to keep baseball’s spring training teams from relocating elsewhere.

  50. Kekoa December 29, 2010 8:54 am

  54. Manoa Mist December 29, 2010 9:11 am

Really nice to hear from Rainbow Cliff yesterday! Great story and memories.

    Just real quick:

I remember one of my mentors at the time Cliff played was a local guard who had played for a small school in college including going up against Jacksonville and Artis Gilmore.

Whenever we talked about UH hoops during that 1-26 year, he’d always point out that even if UH was losing, Sanchez and Newsome always played hard and that in life playing hard – especially in the face of defeat – was more important in the long run than winning.

If you look at the kind of people Cliff and Gary have become, I think my friend was 100 percent correct in his assessment.

  55. Pomai December 29, 2010 9:12 am

Cliff I think Mrs. SailorBlue would take a large.

  56. Old Diver December 29, 2010 9:14 am

I’m so glad it was reveled that Scott Enos was suffering from an arthritic lower back. While I never said it in public I often thought to myself on occasion, this guy is one lousy kicker only to find out later he was in great pain. I felt like a fool bashing a young man in my thoughts when is fact he was a true Warrior.

  57. Okole Maluna December 29, 2010 9:21 am

53 Pomai: as long as they don’t have the same people plan it as they had plan the senior walk…

I totally agree. Too many people at the reception line. They should have let everyone come down to the field and be able to give each of the Seniors a Lei just like at SSC.

  58. A-House December 29, 2010 9:32 am

    Garret:

#13 makes awfully good sense to minimize paperwork, people expenses, mail, etc.

Now, once UH joins the conference they have to me more akamai is collection of data to support thier side when the “travel cost sharing” is reviewed in 2014. Actually, the plans for the collection process must start ASAP. Does Jim D have the resources to do this?

  59. Slugger December 29, 2010 9:34 am

Congrats to Alex Green on the invite to the Texas vs The Nation all-star game! Will we be able to watch that on broadcast TV? The Senior Bowl?

  63. A-House December 29, 2010 9:49 am

except for Tuumalo – any public commitments, in the past 2 or 3 weeks, from Hawaii football players for 2011 or 2012? for sure, NONE to Hawaii!

interestingly, this appears to be a first where almost zero public commitments!

  64. NCAA December 29, 2010 9:50 am

Much success to the seniors in their future endeavors.

  65. jm2375 December 29, 2010 9:51 am

Mr. A-house – coaches are trying to keep things under wraps, so opposing coaches don’t try to poach the commits. Be patient.

  66. NCAA December 29, 2010 9:53 am

    Mr. A-House,

By the looks of it, we have to wait till NLI day, or day after. After all, gotta take advantage of recruiting trips.

  67. NCAA December 29, 2010 9:55 am

I don’t know about this poaching thing because coaches on the continent do know about Hawaii players. It’s not like we are isolated from the outside world.

  68. Old Diver December 29, 2010 9:56 am

Now that two ranked teams in last nights bowl games lost to unranked teams I wonder if their fans are calling for their coaches to be fired. Like I said before half of all the teams participating in this years bowl season will lose. Let’s back our team and it’s coaches just like the fans of big time programs will even though half of them will lose.

  69. musashi December 29, 2010 9:56 am

GREAT SEASON WARRIORS!!! Cannot wait for next season…

Congrats to all the seniors who received their degrees and to those who will be getting their degrees soon…

    Here’s a suggestion…

Besides a season football ticket package for all home games, why not have a smaller package. The package would allow the fans to purchase 4 (or whatever number) tickets that contain a premium game and gets to choose 3 other games. Or the package could have a preset group of games to choose from.

I have heard from friends and others that the reason they do not purchase season tickets is because that cannot go to most of the games. At least that’s income coming in to the football program.

    Anyway, just a suggestion…

  81. jm2375 December 29, 2010 10:17 am

NCAA – apparently the Mainland coaches like the Hawaii coaches evals better than the scouting sites, so once they know that UH is recruiting a player, they go after him.

  84. hawaiiansun December 29, 2010 10:21 am

@13, that was the general understanding and it makes administrative management sense.

  85. NCAA December 29, 2010 10:31 am

Mainland coaches are privy to Hawaii’s evals? If you look down the list of Hawaii top recruits you’ll see many universities listed as interested. Sometimes Hawaii isn’t even listed. In my mind, either the recruit is not interested in playing for the home team or coaches have different recruiting criteria or coaches have different eye for talent and potential.

If poaching is truly a concern then let the local recruit decide. If he doesn’t want to play for the home team then what can we do? It’s their decision.

UH should have made travel subsidies conditional on the win/loss record and number of tickets sold by the visiting school. EG… $175,000 if they sell at least 1000 tickets and arrive with a winning record. $150,000 if only one of the two criteria are met. $100,000 if none of the two criteria are met.

  117. Garret December 29, 2010 11:49 am

Too bad for Jake Ingram. I hope that he gets another shot in the offseason.

The Baltimore Ravens auditioned long snappers Kevin Houser and Bryan Pittman on Tuesday and had them remain overnight to take physicals. The team expects to sign one of them yesterday.

Jake Ingram and Ethan Albright also tried out, but the decision has been narrowed down between Houser and Pittman.

  118. Garret December 29, 2010 11:55 am

    jm2375,

There are a lot of local recruits who received offers from Oregon State and others *before* UH offered them a scholarship. I really don’t think that the top recruits are under the radar at all, especially since they go to mainland camps or events in Hawaii like the All-Poly Camp. Many of the recruits from Hawaii and the mainland that UH offered have committed to other schools…in that case, it is good that the UH offer was mostly under the radar (known to the recruiting services and in other forums, but maybe not posted here and not mentioned in the newspaper). I know that I restrain myself from posting the news each time that a recruit that UH offered selected some other school…but I celebrate when a UH recruit that made a commit elsewhere (like Juda Parker to Tennessee) opens up his recruiting again.

However, there *are* players below the radar that the UH coaches want to keep quiet on. Players like John Hardy-Tuilau shows that the coaches can evaluate and attract players who can make an impact right away that other schools may miss.

The comment some fans make that UH wants to keep its recruits secret from SMU so they don’t go after the same recruits doesn’t apply this year since SMU has 26 commits already (1 four-star, 18 three-stars).

  119. Garret December 29, 2010 11:56 am

I’m at the airport so the next time I post will either be late tonight from San Diego…or in a few hours from my in-laws in Kaneohe.

  120. A-House December 29, 2010 11:59 am

Since the “travel cost sharing” article, I see several who are concerned whether Hawaii got took by the MWC and BWC. I too am concerned, but was it more important to get into each conference and then address “issues” as they arise?

Jim D is faced with a tremendous burden in getting the UHAD into the “black” or significantly nearer to “black” to reduce the stress of “travel cost sharing”. More fans in seats for all sports, corporate sponsors who are willing to keep or increase their commitment to UH (overheard a conversation where current corporate donors may significantly reduce their contribution to UH), new donors ( small or large ), etc. will help Jim D. Also, heard Gov-elect Abercrombie, on Leahy & Leahy, offer to help with “travel subsidies” by making it a “line-item” in the State’s budget. UH fans need to support this idea by contacting their representatives and senators to assist the Gov. I say again, a $2 million line item in a multi-million or billion dollar budget is miniscule!

It is great that Jim D and the management committee got the MWC to agree to reviewing this aspect every 2 years and make the necessary adjustments. Bad news that the price of crude oil is at the highest level in a long time – around $98/barrel.

Hope we have a lot of “Garrets” around to create technology that will significantly decrease USA oil comsumption; especially in gasoline! Then, we have to FIGHT the oil companies and their highly paid lobbyists in D.C.

  122. Garret December 29, 2010 12:02 pm

Before I go–one last thing about recruiting: I believe that UH was hurt in the early recruiting because it appeared that UH was stuck in the WAC, with Boise State leaving and then later Nevada/Fresno. Recruiting to the WAC when the opposing recruiters were saying that the WAC might die, was a tough task for UH’s coaches.

This may have been a reason for the early announcement of UH going to the MWC. The UH football coaches themselves said that they were being hurt by being in the WAC and that going to the MWC would help recruiting. This is *not* a rumor, UH coaches said this openly in interviews.

With most of the top recruits already committed for this year, it is possible that the move to the MWC might not show up much until next year. However, the late push for recruits for UH will be a lot easier in January and early February with UH going to play in the MWC in 2012.

    re: #31 & #48

Liz and greenthumb – Beautiful idea! If a flight leaves Hilo at 4 pm. and a charter bus transports the fans, we could easily make it to the stadium by 6 pm. ( I think ). There is a travel agent in Hilo that does sumtin’ li’ dis with the musicals ( ie. “Cats” ). They go in the morning, charter bus to Ala Moana for shopping and lunch, go to the theater, then back to the airport and good ol’ Hilo. I think that someone had suggested this to the agent for football and also a vice-versa trip with the Merrire Monarch Festival. I think it didn’t fly (pun intended) because the airlines weren’t convinced that they could make money. I’ll try talking to the travel agency and see if there is a possiblility that this could happen. It’s worth a try…

Coach Mac needs to start recruiting this big island kid already. Good chance he’ll be the top prospect in the state in a couple years. His brother is 6’4 250 DE at OSU.

He’s on the thin side, but he’s a hard worker and will grow into a 6’4 220 frame by the time he’s a senior. Currently runs a 4.60 40, and is 6’1.

  126. papajoe2 December 29, 2010 12:33 pm

I noticed that those schools that arrive in Hawaii on a Friday before their Saturday game and leave right after their game usually loses to Hawaii. Is this a coincidence? The teams that can afford to come earlier are the bigger schools and lately, have been beating Hawaii here (Tulsa and Notre Dame too). If you were a recruit to another WAC school and enticed by the “we’re going to Hawaii every other year” only to arrive late Friday night and leave Saturday after the game without enjoying or getting the feel of Hawaii, would you be emotionally bummed or psyched? With Hawaii paying for the MWC football teams to travel to Hawaii, will they arrive on a Friday night or will they come early, get acclimated, and enjoy Hawaii? If they come early, I hope they spend their own money for meals, luaus, Pearl Harbor, surfing lessons, etc., to help our economy.

  134. A-House December 29, 2010 1:18 pm

    Hilo Moon:

that idea may just take roots if only an airline willing to chance it!

can be from Hilo or Maui or Kauai – travel agent can make resevations for earlier in the afternoon, go shopping first, then eat, then game, and then go home – make it a half day trip, but get a lot of things done. no need “charter” a plane, just make it part of the passengers. if marketed properly, can get those interested in a late flight to the other islands where not only those coming, but those wanting to go on a late flight.

airline can ‘park” the aircraft overnight and use it for one of the early flights into Honolulu.

It’s going to be a long flight for those in Hilo, but it might work?? Kauai people would have to take a regular flight that arrives similar times and they can use one bus to the stadium??

    RE: Hilo Moon #133

Back in the mid-80’s during my stint as a travel agent, my agency offered something called “The Rainbow Express”. UH was the “Rainbows” then and I was the youngest UH fan in the office so got assigned as the escort. A lso did the Hula Bowl and Pro Bowl back then.

The deal was billed as park your car (free) or fly in and take the (free) hotel shuttle from the airport. The package included two free drinks and heavy pupus at the hotel. Then a bus to the stadium and back to the hotel after the game. (do you know how difficult it is to count 30 fans in a bus when you have to be 100% accurate…really!)

The price was $15 and you must have your own game tickets. Our agency was happier if you booked your air and hotel stay though them, but not required. Of course, the hotel was happier if you purchased a meal, more drinks, or stayed overnight–but that was not required. We had mostly local residents and a few from the neighbor islands, but the low neighbor island count was probably due to our ZERO advertising budget. Now we have websites and blogs 🙂

Maybe some enterprising individuals or hotel managers might examine this model again.

#54 Manoa Mist: WOW you got me shedding a tear from your heartfelt words. Very kind of you and your mentor to recognize myself and Gary Newsome. We both came to Hawaii with the attitude to play TOUGH defense, be quick with our ball handling skills, lead by example and INSPIRE our teammates around us to play just as hard. We both won community service awards during our time at UH and graduating from Manoa still today our highlight of achievement as SO many athletes during that time did not. We both are service professionals with myself providing early intervention for inner city children of South Central Los Angeles and Gary providing light, hope and encouragement for unfortunate adults who have gone wrong in life and trying to put it back together. 18 years with the both of us doing our BEST by making a difference for God’s people. Your mentor summation is so SUREAL that I am just HUMBLE to his confidence of faith to I and Mr. Newsome. We really had no idea what life will bestowed to us when we finish Hawaii BUT we both had HEART and DETERMINATION as our career at UH was just that playing HARD every game and NEVER giving up !

I cannot thank you enough for your kind memories to myself and Gary Newsome. It’s been 28 years since we put on the Hawaii green and white. We both have NO REGRETS what happen to us during our playing days at UH and in reality God had a purpose for the both of us as we are both healthy, family oriented and still have COMPASSION to help and aid God’s WONDERFUL people !

For me it was ALWAYS to come back too you good folks and give admiration, praise and glory ! I ENJOY so much of GIVING to Hawaii as during my time Hawaii people took care of me REGARDLESS of what happen to me as a player. There was a time during those bench years that I was so ashame to even come out of the locker room front entrance where fans will await for our autographs. I lost so much confidence during those lean years as I will dress, no need to shower and go out the back way. My last game I was going through the same routine BUT what happen I would never forget as I was walking my lonely path way out the back entrance there were a LARGE group of die hard fans that some how found out my exit routine. Before I could start moving they SURROUNDED me with leis, gifts and programs of my picture to autograph as I was just so OVERWEALM with their love and respect. I hugged every one there, signed every program, took pictures and thank them for their adulation to me. I walked Kapiolani Boulevard that evening with many people wondering who I was with leis filled to my head, tears running down my cheeks and arms filled with gifts !

Mano Mist, that is why I have so much LOVE for you good folks and do everything that I can to help and support Hawaii. It comes natural and free with no strings attached. The ALOHA SPIRIT it is called and I had it my whole time being a scholarship student athlete for

the Rainbow Warriors as I live it everyday here in Los Angeles 29 years later !

Got a good looking freshmen class for the 2011 season offensive line. We will need a good offensive line coach to coach these guys up. Perhaps Chris Naeole who is already in town may want to get into the profession. It is also well known that Bears center Olin Kreutz wants to go into coaching when he’s done. It’s assumed that he will get opportunities at the NFL level when he’s ready. Perhaps his local born wife may talk him into coming home to coach for the Warriors instead. Would be scary to have 18 to 20 offensive linemen at Hawaii with Olin’s demeanor and approach to football. Like I said scary. “We will win some and we will lose some, but win or lose, when this game is done, I can assure you that your lips bleed, your head wil hurt, and your nose will be broken.” Olin is known to invite rookies to workout in the weightroom and the vets take bets on how long it’ll take the rookie to run to the can to regurgitate his lunch

    2011 Freshmen Class/Offensive Line:

    Jordan Loeffler 6-5 300

    Kody Afusia 6-2 325

    Dave Lefotu 6-3 305

    Frank Loyd 6-3 290

    Sean Shigematsu 6-4 270

    Blake Muir 6-5 285

    Benjamin Dew 6-4 300

Sometimes letting go of a coach isn’t about just the win-loss record but rather the attempt to reinvigorate a program…give it new life, new meaning and a redefined direction.

We have all seen several coaches around the nation with good, maybe even great records that got canned for someone else or something else.

    #160,

I have always wondered how you can take a coach who taught a Big 10 type of offensive line, one that is about brute strength and size to dominate the line of scrimmage and power over D-line and all of a sudden try to coach a Pass Protection O-line that is built on Quick Feet, Speed, and Maneuverability…

Fundamentally the O-line of the Pac-10 (less Stanford) and that of the Big 10 are completely different…

When Coach Cav was here we always had a solid O-line…if I had to single out a coach he would be the one I miss the most.

  171. βρεω808 December 29, 2010 2:56 pm

IMHO – I thought the OL performed quite well this season – especially w/ AG back there picking up the extra pass rushers. There has been significant improvement at OL over the last two seasons. Even depth-wise. Comments? 🙄

    D1,

Do you know what the reason was for the lateral move to OSU?…

  180. RainbowCliff December 29, 2010 3:08 pm

#73 Pua: “Truly a Rainbow” I thank you. My life has been an INSPIRATION as

I won the award many times in grade school, high school and Hawaii (Ah Choo Goo

Most Inspirational Player 1976 as Mr A House can attest as he saw the picture)

When I reflect my experiences on this blog I teary eye myself. I was so young and

impressionable playing for UH and went through many good and dissapointing moments

as a young student athlete. Through it all I made it as pererverance builds character.

I am so GRATEFUL to come back here and have this opportunity to give back. It feels

a part of my Hawaii life had to be refilled again with this time a happy ending. Thank

you for your kind remarks and may God keep riching your life with HAPPINESS !

  181. Pride. December 29, 2010 3:10 pm

I think Chris Naeole would be real good. Olin might be tough. Olin is a HAMMER in capital letters. Even Urlacher bows down to kiss Olin’s toes. If Olin coaches at Hawaii, nobody is going to be able to take days or plays off. Everybody around him will be held up to very, very high standards. Players have left Chicago, because Olin ran them off of the team. Remember a story of Juinior Seau doing that to a running back in San Diego. Junior harrased him for not giving effort and being hurt all of the time, player asked to be traded. Olin brings the same qualities to the table. Other coaches will be afraid to smile before games.

  188. Pride. December 29, 2010 3:16 pm

#181 – Chris Naeole had a similar reputation at Colorado. Still known as the toughest guy to play at CU. Kreutz known as the toughest guy to play at UW. Although Steve Emtman is known as the best player to ever play at UW.

  189. Pomai December 29, 2010 3:17 pm

As you guys know, I have a very, very long memory. My concern is since they chose to play away from home (big BCS schools), are there any remnants of that decision still there to possibly influence our guys, or possible 808 recruits?

Current guy did make a choice to coach/work in Manoa. 😐

  193. iwonderwhytheyhate December 29, 2010 3:23 pm

    re: Cav

Was it a money thing then?…I mean I am sure OSU probably doubled his salary.

I also read something about a donation of a kidney between his family and another coaches family or something like that at OSU…

  194. Kazz December 29, 2010 3:25 pm

I don’t understand the logic of having Dunnachie work on kickoffs.

Too often we have seen MANY players “moonlighting” in many positions outside of what they were recruited for within the last 3 seasons.

I mean what was Tyler recruited for?

If they have Dunnachie practicing for a back up situation, then fine, but the KOS position shouldn’t really be “open for competition”.

  195. βρεω808 December 29, 2010 3:25 pm

  196. iwonderwhytheyhate December 29, 2010 3:25 pm

They are local guys who can relate to local kids. They both no the game inside out. They will be able to teach, even though both lack coaching experience. When you play as long as they have they can almost coach as well as the NFL coaches who coach them. They might be able to recruit well, because they have been to where young local kids want to go.

  203. Old School Dave December 29, 2010 3:36 pm

Re: 181: Chris Naole or Olin Kruetz might make good coaches. Both have no peers on the field, without a doubt. I have doubts about “star” players becoming good coaches, though. There’s a long list of former “star” players who have failed miserably as coaches. Often times the success one experiences as a player doesn’t transfer over when they become coaches. Not saying that Naeole or Kruetz wouldn’t do a good job, just stating the facts. Many of the successful College or NFL coaches were perhaps starters, but nothing spectacular. Many more were backup players. I remember one instance of a former NFL All-Pro who became a NFL D-line coach. He was a hard charger, but lacked the necessary coaching skills to motivate and teach his players. His war stories from his playing days became old and stale very quickly with his players, not to mention his overly simplistic coaching methods of “just run over or through the guy in front of you.”

  204. βρεω808 December 29, 2010 3:36 pm

  205. Pomai December 29, 2010 3:41 pm

#203 – Dave I don’t think that would be any problem with Mr. Kreutz, the man knows football and from what I can see he would have no problem conveying the techniques of playing O-line.

  206. NCAA December 29, 2010 3:45 pm

If they can find someone to kick it out of the endzone then I don’t care who it is. As long as it isn’t shanked out of bounds on the sidelines.

  207. Stretch December 29, 2010 3:49 pm

#203 – you talking about Mike Singletary??

  208. Pride. December 29, 2010 3:55 pm

#203 – Yes Dave you took the words right out of my mouth. I’ve always said that the best coaches were back-ups in the NFL or college. Why? Because a lot of star athletes got by on athletic ability, and were natural athletes and football players. However I must say that in the case of both Naeole and Kreutz, I have a hunch that what we are saying wouldn’t be true. Both had to work very hard on and off the field to get the production that they were able to get. Neither had extraodinary size or speed. Both relied on savvy, hard work, and suprior technique. My feelings about them being good coaches is just a hunch. I wouldn’t write them off based on someone else’s experience. You take each person and each case differently as they come along and make your judgement from there. Someone had enough faith in Jeff Ulbrich to give him a chance his first year out of the NFL. From what we hear, he is doing very well there.

Another things about star players making the transition and having the same level of success as coaches are the number of hours coaches have to spend prepping, scouting, drawing up new schemes, meetings – meetings – and more meetings. The hours are brutal and the coaches are the ones who remain late into the night long after the players have gone home.

I remember reading Bill Walsh’s book and he talked about when Jack “Hacksaw” Reynolds came on as an assistant with the Niners. Walsh loved Hacksaw (who wouldn’t given they player that he was), but the reality was that he didn’t have the dedication and drive to put in the hours that coaches do. Most former players, if they have the means and enough $$, would rather spend their time on the golf course.

  273. A-House December 29, 2010 7:09 pm

    Future coaches:

maybe one or both will be like JJ, but he was not the starter so had lots and lots of time on the sideline to “hone” his play making and coaching skills.

Naone and Krutz were starters all the while and did not have the extra time to “hone” like JJ did; and I’m not talking about J(J)– not putting our J(J) down!

Maybe a quick interview with fellow players/coaches will shed some light – but, would not matter if one or both had NO interest in coaching at UH.

  274. A-House December 29, 2010 7:12 pm

I think Ulbrich would make an excellent LB coach for UH – played here – married a local girl.

“hone” his skills at San Jose and then make the move when the position opens.

have not seen any article where Cal Lee is leaving UH to join bro Ron at Kalani – mention was made before or early in the season that he was going to do this – is this still true?

  275. A-House December 29, 2010 7:17 pm

Learned a long time ago that a good employee with “technical skills” does not make a good suprevisor – cannot teach principles to others; no leadership/managerial skills – but, put that person in a corner all by his/her lonesome and the results are outta sight!!

some say engineers are like that – cannot work with people – of course not all, but a majority are.

I got nothing but faith for a brighter future but they need to start off strong an Finish STRONGER to be taken serious!

Wow, #5 is awesome, sets freshman scoring record with 31 points so far and over 20 something rebounds. As good as she is, #12 is awful, bad hands, bad decisions, bad footwork. Don’t need her height, she can’t rebound, put in a better ballhandler with CSB’s lack of height.

  285. el guapo December 29, 2010 9:17 pm

There was discussion today about prospective offensive line coaches. I have not heard anything about the current coach leaving. Is it because we do not like the current coach? If this is the reason, why do we not like the current coach?

  286. iwonderwhytheyhate December 29, 2010 9:52 pm

    el guapo,

just thinking out loud i suppose. Although our o-line has never been the same since Coach Cav left…

In our offense you basically live or die by the o-line.

I have yet to hear anyone comment on Jesse Sapolu as a prospective O-line coach.

  287. Bewildered December 29, 2010 10:21 pm

I like the current oline coach. at the beginning of the season, many weren’t sure about our oline. in the end, it seemed to me that the oline was good. on the other hand, the complete wash of the left side of the oline on the last game has me stumped. but it wasn’t only the oline that was missing starters in the final game. thats why I’m bewildered…

  288. Bighilofan2 December 29, 2010 10:24 pm

If I had a son playing Oline, I’d be real happy to have Gordy Shaw as his coach. I’d make sure my son kept his grades up too. No can disrespect his name, no can!

Adrian Klemm is developing into a good Oline coach at SMU and also aborbing the run and shoot offense and particularly the running game.

He has been discussing New England’s 3 and 4 wide formations and blocking schemes with the New England coaches (Klemm played at New England) and discussing run blocking and screen passes, so he and JJ have gotten ideas from New England and the New England coaches have added some of the screens JJ runs.

Good games tonight by both basketball teams. Impressed with Kamilah Jackson. She may end up being the career scoring leader. Wahine gotta take care of the ball better. Too many turnovers.

and wow, if you didn’t watch tonight’s game, you missed out on an unbelievable performance not only by keisha kanekoa scoring 20 to surpass 1000 points but what our #5 did.

kamilah jackson, true freshman, ended up with 31 points and 25 rebounds. and we needed everything she and keisha did because CSUB was on fire from behind the 3 point line.

Wow!!! It’s the Firth Day of Christmas – just found out a few hours ago that muy name had been picked in the drawing for RainbowCliff’s gift shirt. Mahalo.

Pomai: I don’t have Cliff’s e-mail address – could you send it to me please – swood at hoku dot com so I can send him my mailing address. Mahalo to you as well.

Congratulations to Coach Dana and the Wahine basketball team for their great game earlier tonight. The men’s team also did exceedingly well in Utah – even though they lost, they were boldly present on the court when it counted – except at the free-throw line. Had they shot there consistently, they would have won.

My suggestion? Half an hour of nothing but shooting free throws with all kinds of noise coming over the loudspeaker.

Submitted three more issues for legislative consideration today – now comes Round Two – making sure that the legislation gets submitted, heard, voted on favorably, and then crosses over to the other Chamber for its consideration. Then it’s conference committees, final vote, and a trip to the Fifth Floor for Da New Gov to examine and (hopefully) sign.

Got some good news in the mail today – the non-profit I work for has cleared the initial screening for two highly competitive grants. Now comes the really hard work – putting together detailed proposals and a working budget. We will definitely be hiring a social media geek and at least two project managers. Anyone interested??

Finally, I got some good news medically speaking today over the phone. Whatever it is that is blocking my ability to eat much in the way of solid food is not what we were fearful it was going to be. More tests in the next several weeks to see if it’s neuirological or hormonal, but in the meantime I get to eat all the ice cream & frozen yogurt I want!!! Yippee!!

Just finished my archive work for the night–up to the first Camellia Cattle Call on March 14, 2007 now. Since it’s quiet tonight and NCAA asked why it’s called a “Cattle Call”…

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

My first post today and final comments on yesterday’s Camellia lunch: No more weekday Tsai-ko buffets for me if I gotta work the next day. But I’m off next week…

Remember all those days on the blog with Da Punchbowl Kid trying to get at Al’s food? Consider this…

    1. Al, da Kid and I are sharing the same cooking grill.

    2. Al and Kid are cooking mostly the same stuff.

    3. Al’s got the fastest pair of chopsticks I’ve ever seen.

    4. The Kid looks up from the grill when he speaks.

    – – – – – – – –

When going to get our first round of food, an oriental couple about 5′ tall looked at me nervously and dashed in front of me. I thought that was rude until I saw them snatch some kal bi bulla missed, turn their bodies and gingerly escape through the small opening between bulla and the Kid. Al and bulla were along the meat line and Kid was standing behind Wreckineyez for the veggies. When I went in behind the kid, the entrance was totally blocked and there was still Addahknowjoe behind me. Then I realized the couple didn’t want to trapped among us. The entry was blocked for a while 😉

your recollection is accurate, i didn’t want to be trapped by you guys either….Al, is nothing short of a culinary marvel, the way he can use those chop sticks…..shoot, he looked like the drummer for jimi hendrix the way he was twirling. Kid did a good job, never saw someone eat so efficiently with one chopstick clenched in each paw….i mean fin….i mean hand. joe was very polite, but i think when i wasn’t looking he grabbed some of Eyez’ food, but i won’t tell. you know Eyez, he’s the distinguished dapper don when he is with us, telling us that he has to dress like that for work, ha, i saw him lurking in the shadows by Tiffany waiting for unsuspecting tourist women…with his looks and those locks……whew, i’d run too.

it was a fun time, made for one supah nap for me, haha, but i hadn’t slept since the day before, so it was all good.

g’night boys and girls, i’ll check on you in the morning.

    re: O-Line

I like Coach Gordy Shaw a lot and think he’s doing a great job. I believe Coach Shaw is adept at handling any kind of offense and not just the Big-Ten type. The better talent we get, the better a job he’ll be able to do. Right now with the guys returning and some of the red-shirt studs waiting in the wings, I look for another solid year by the O-Line. That’ll be a strength again for the team. I’m more worried by Moniz’s inconsistent performance for the latter part of the year. Hope he’s not either plateauing or back-sliding. Though there will be assurances of a wide-open competition, I’m a realist and know the job is his to lose, so I’m hoping he regains the form that he showed in the first half of the past season.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

intriguing overview of logos, but, far more exciting comments. identities will not be built by logos alone, but by their put within a bigger set of collateral. no logo is an island and none should be completely judged in isolation with the way they’re utilized.

Well, to not repeat the hating on aol, but th is is most likely essentially the most d isappointing l ist to date. On both sides. How can El Banco Deuno and aol be around the best l ist, and then bash art directors club? I really did nothave an issue with that redesign, as well as collateral was looking pretty great. You realize what will need to have been to the l ist for worst logos? New York Philharmonic logo. My hatred of that logo burns in my chest to th is day. The name on the designer behind that logo could be the only motive for any of its accomplishment. The most effective l ist the 12 months is pretty mediocre for me.I like Mary Shu is comment about her selections for that greatest l ist somewhat greater.

In virtually all jurisdictions, specific procedures for foreclosure and sale of the mortgaged property apply, and may be tightly regulated by the relevant government. There are strict or judicial foreclosures and non-judicial foreclosures, also known as power of sale foreclosures. In some jurisdictions, foreclosure and sale can occur quite rapidly, while in others, foreclosure may take many months or even years. In many countries, the ability of lenders to foreclose is extremely limited, and mortgage market development has been notably slower.

In most jurisdictions, a lender may foreclose the mortgaged property if certain conditions – principally, non-payment of the mortgage loan – obtain. Subject to local legal requirements, the property may then be sold. Any amounts received from the sale (net of costs) are applied to the original debt. In some jurisdictions, mortgage loans are non-recourse loans: if the funds recouped from sale of the mortgaged property are insufficient to cover the outstanding debt, the lender may not have recourse to the borrower after foreclosure. In other jurisdictions, the borrower remains responsible for any remaining debt.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  668. coach jewelry January 17, 2011 5:46 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Game writers tend to spend more time developing the story, unless its something like Unreal Tournament. Movies usually have a scene or a certain stunt they want to pull off, and can make a story about that. That said, however, some games/comic books translate very well into film – just look at watchmen.

  741. coach handbags January 21, 2011 4:11 pm

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I would probably be much happier ignoring the fact that our President has just about started world war three with his ignorance. I don’t know what’s better. Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.
