End is in sight

Remember defensive end Ipulasi “Lasi” Eselu of Moanalua High School?

He committed to UH in July 2009 as part of the 2010 recruiting class, but did not meet the requirements to play for the Warriors that fall. Instead, he took classes at UH’s West Oahu campus. He earned enough transferable credits to enroll at UH-Manoa in January and join the Warriors on scholarship.

In the meantime, he has grown an inch and gained 30 pounds. He now is 6 feet 3 and 230 pounds, and projects to play rush end or strong-side linebacker for the Warriors. He will have four years to play four seasons.

Happy birthday wishes to Hawaiianbod.

it’ll be interesting to see who starts at the helm come saturday.

the little birdie has been saying that the sophmore guy has looked sharp when he is on the field of practice. however, he is still stricken with that intestinal flu and has been running to his best friend the sideline trash can between passes.

    UH’s wish list is corners, linebackers, pass-rushers, d-tackles, o-linemen.

I think they’re going to bring in a punter who would redshirt next year, then replace Dunnachie in 2013.

What about receivers? Seems like this year’s team is much lower in quality than previous years. Much needed for the run and shoot.

  28. Garret November 18, 2011 6:04 am

Great to hear the news about Lasi Eselu! It is rare for someone to go the West Oahu route, but it can be a huge benefit to both UH and the player. That required Lasi to pay his own way at West Oahu and to do well in his classes, so it is great to hear that he did that!

  29. d1shima November 18, 2011 6:06 am

  33. Garret November 18, 2011 6:09 am

UH just offered Josh Tupou a scholarship. Tupou already had offers from 4 other schools, but the interesting thing to me is that he took an official visit to Nevada last weekend so he attended the UH-Nevada game. This article was published earlier this week before UH offered Tupou a scholarship.

Two-way lineman Josh Tupou (6-4, 297) leads the way with offers from Colorado, Nevada, San Jose State and Alabama State. The senior visited Nevada over the weekend and picked up his offer from the Wolf Pack, Coyotes coach Anthony White said Tuesday. He also is receiving interest from Hawaii.

You can do that every series against Fresno.

    Rack it up.

    Blow them out.

UH offered OT Spencer Fox a scholarship earlier this week. UH is his first offer so far.

or as Woody Paige headlined this morning, ” In the nick of Tim, Broncos win.”

  37. Garret November 18, 2011 6:14 am

I saw references to at least one deleted post when I caught up with the blog, I have no idea what happened and don’t want to guess. What I *hope* happens is that UH wins its next 4 games so the talk is all about positive things, recruiting will hopefully be filled with a lot of commits such as Tupou and Mathis, and Aloha Stadium is filled so UHAD has enough money to balance its budget.

If I can’t get everything I hope for, I at least hope for UH to win the next 2 games and have a full house against BYU. I don’t think that is too unrealistic a thing to hope for…

    From da papah:

    Brown is leading tackler

Weakside linebacker Aaron Brown leads the Warriors with 80 tackles, an impressive total because he was suspended for the opening game and has endured a variety of ailments since.

In last week’s loss to Nevada, Brown had 12 tackles and recovered a fumble despite suffering from a stomach virus. He said he received IV treatment the night before the game, during warm-ups and at halftime. He never considered missing the game.

“My team needed me,” Brown said. “My legs worked. My arms worked. Why not play?”

This season, Brown has had injuries to his hamstring, knee and ankle. But he has missed only a few series, mostly to give work to younger players.

“You have to do what you have to do,” Brown said. “You have to earn that scholarship.”

    Go Warriors!

  53. haka November 18, 2011 7:10 am

Dave Reardon’s article is such crap. His incessant negativity has bottomed out. Pathetic piece of journalism, content and inference. And in his mind his work IS “communication”? What we have here is a failure…period. IMO!

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid November 18, 2011 7:10 am

Meanwhile, Warriors need to stay hungry, focused, humble and FINISH!

Most importantly, keep your heads up!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  55. CoolEthan November 18, 2011 7:17 am

Can Reardons article be copy/pasted in this blog?

I want to read it now.

    Thanks Haka

  56. Bowwar November 18, 2011 7:19 am

This weekend’s game is pivotal to the Warrior’s season…Let’s hope both our fans and players step-up to the plate.

  57. Bowwar November 18, 2011 7:21 am

ST…If the Warriors are in the market for another punter, couldn’t they look for a “combo” kicker who is both a PK and punter? Jason Elam was both for the Warriors, so that would be the ideal.

  58. LizKauai (iPad) November 18, 2011 7:22 am

No need pollute the blog with negatives.

    Go Warriors!

  60. haka November 18, 2011 7:27 am

    CoolEthan

Your opinion may be different than mine, but here it is. I’m just really tired of him.

What we have here is a failure to communicate

    For Friday, November 18, 2011

    By Dave Reardon

You don’t have to be kama‘aina to be the University of Hawaii’s head football coach. You can be anyone from anywhere if you know what you’re doing.

Just win games and be real about things. Or win enough games so you don’t have to worry about the second part.

If you pull down more than a million dollars a year of taxpayer money as the state’s highest-paid employee it’s preferable you do both.

If you project a love and understanding for things Hawaii, and the same for the military, and you’ve lived here five years, you should probably know what the phrase “Go For Broke” refers to.

But according to Greg McMackin on his “Call The Coach Show” this week, he “learned a new word.” (Not “a new saying,” but, hey, who’s perfect?). When a supportive caller told him “Go For Broke,” McMackin made a joke alluding to Las Vegas. And yes, while the phrase’s origins are gambling-related (roughly the equivalent to “all-in”), it is much better known as the motto of the 100th/442nd infantry, still based on Oahu. The most decorated unit of its size in U.S. Army history and one of the proudest of Hawaii’s local institutions was even in the news recently.

No one expects McMackin to know everything about everything local. In and by itself, this is just one little point. Sort of like the one most teams make routinely after scoring a touchdown.

Like I said, win enough games and it doesn’t really matter.

But, to me — and I know at least a few others — it is indicative of a problem. It is part of why there is so much hesitancy in extending McMackin’s contract, even if he wins the rest of his games this season, even at a lower salary.

    The problem is appropriate communication.

It was there for all the nation to see in 2009 when he attempted to make a joke at the WAC media meetings but used a word derogatory to gays. It could have gotten him fired. In retrospect, it should have.

This communication problem hasn’t manifested itself to that magnitude again since, but it’s still there. It often comes in the form of him forgetting names of players. This used to happen to Bobby Bowden. But Florida State was winning, so everyone just laughed it off.

But the laughing stops when the winning stops.

Also in 2009, McMackin repeatedly talked about how he would find “11 Hawaiians to run around on defense.” People cringed, but gave him a pass. He meant well, but that’s inappropriate public phraseology for a current era football coach, especially one in Hawaii who claims local sensitivities.

At a practice in Reno, Nev., last week, McMackin took a total of at least 15 minutes to speak individually to two media members, and to chastise a third (me) in front of others about things I wrote in the paper. The NCAA mandates limited coach-player interaction time. He talked to us when he should have been running his practice.

That 15 minutes of lost coaching probably wouldn’t have made a difference in the loss to Nevada, but you see the point. A lack of focus on the task at hand.

McMackin took over a UH football program with heightened expectations and a salary — as ridiculous as it was and is — reflecting such. When those expectations aren’t met in the won-lost columns, the other stuff becomes harder to ignore … especially at $1.1 million a year.

  61. haka November 18, 2011 7:28 am

    My apologies LizKauai.

  62. Old School Dave November 18, 2011 7:34 am

Coach Mac should just let the negative stuff slide and be above it. Stay focused and keep it in the family. Then again, that’s not his style in protecting his team.

The team is playing with a lot of heart and effort. Just look at the number of Warriors who are playing with an assortment of injuries. The record may not be the best, but the effort surely is.

  63. Old School Dave November 18, 2011 7:37 am

“a positive anything is better than a negative nothing”

Except when it comes to a lab result 🙂

  64. Candy November 18, 2011 7:40 am

This morning’s paper is just one more example of persons kicking someone while they are down or even piling on. I was pulling for Tebow to do well for the Broncos, not because I am a Denver fan, but because of all the sportswriters and fans putting him down. I will do the same for the Warrior Football coaches, players, and the team during their hard times and that support goes back to the termite palace. The power of positive thinking and support can do wonders. I will look forward to the team doing well and cheering them on against all upcoming opponents—and then let the chips fall where they may at the end of the season. Don’t be too quick to write them off until after the final chapter is written! GO WARRIORS—ONE GAME AT A TIME!! GO BALDWIN TOO!!

  65. LizKauai (iPad) November 18, 2011 7:40 am

This is Tsai’s blog. Read other people on their own blogs.

    Common courtesy.

  66. RedZone November 18, 2011 7:41 am

    Go Mack Go Warriors.

  67. haka November 18, 2011 7:43 am

My apologies once again. Won’t happen again.

  68. CoolEthan November 18, 2011 7:44 am

    thx Haka.

  69. Old School Dave November 18, 2011 7:44 am

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to feed off on criticism and negativity? Sad commentary. Seems to be a lot of miserable people in this world today who are happy when others are down on their luck.

    GO WARRIORS!! STILL GET CHANCE!!

  70. Uniwarrior November 18, 2011 7:46 am

Whatever happens in today and tomorrow next week next month…lets join together as a “team” and support the choice of the coaches. A house divided…well it just isn’t as effective as the alternative! Let’s keep the Ohana spirit alive and let it bring all of us together – the team, the coaching staff, and the fans. Even though we have our favorites and understandably are very passionate in our viewpoints and opinions, lets just remember that everyone is doing their best whether that is apparent or not. We are Hawaii. We are Warriors and WE BELIEVE!!! Beat Fresno…

  71. LizKauai (iPad) November 18, 2011 7:50 am

BS Haka… You did that on purpose. How can ST delete a fellow employee’s piece without some fallout?

The apology should be directed to Stephen Tsai…whose hospitality is the reason we are here at all.

  72. haka November 18, 2011 7:52 am

What? LizKauai please. My apologies to ST. But malice and intent? LizKauai you are wrong.

  73. LizKauai (iPad) November 18, 2011 7:54 am

Today the Warriors are up for their greatest challenge yet.

    Goooo Warrirrriorrrs!

Round 1 tomorrow. Showdown w/ the DC’s Alma Mater in the Catdome at high noon.

    Go ‘Cats!

  76. Bowwar November 18, 2011 8:00 am

Let me echo what others have said…It’s not all based on “wins & losses”, but what we want to instill in the young men who have dedicated their college careers for this University. What I see in this year’s team which rises above others is the amount of EFFORT being expended and their RESILIENCE. There is NO QUIT in this year’s team and you had to be there in Nevada to note that they fought till the bitter end. Resilience and effort are the result of GOOD COACHING and we should acknowledge that.

Adversity should be on the field and no where else. Our team and athletes have enough of a challenge dealing with adversity on the field without getting trashed by “so-called fans” and tabloid journalist. MACK may not be perfect nor a great speaker, but he is PASSIONATE about his players and coaching staff. If you recall during his first coaching stint in Hawaii, he went after some fans in the South end-zone when they were dissing his players…Players respect that and will play for coaches like that. You won’t be seeing any books being written about MACK by any of the players, unlike the “God” that many revere in UH football history…

    IMUA Warriors

  77. Bowwar November 18, 2011 8:01 am

    I’m with you Uniwarrior!

  78. WarriorMojo November 18, 2011 8:03 am

Liz, I don’t see why ST can’t delete it. I’m guessing from Cool Ethan’s request that Hack Reardon’s piece was behind the paywall. Anyway, the piece should be deleted, just on the basis of its high crap factor. Boo hoo hoo, reardon, Mack scolded you. Wah wah wah. Do you think you look good crying in your column? You dish it, then take it too.

Haka, no worries. I totally agree with you, obviously.

  79. kev-1 November 18, 2011 8:04 am

is there really a need to be so territorial and defensive here? nothing wrong with people commenting on things, it shouldn’t matter who wrote it.

  80. WarriorMojo November 18, 2011 8:07 am

Anyway, welcome — and THANK YOU — to Lasi. I look forward to cheering for you for the next four/five years.

  82. Innocent Observer November 18, 2011 8:10 am

ST – add to your wish list for next year a new coaching staff.

  83. gumby November 18, 2011 8:10 am

Whether you support Coach Mack or not, Reardon’s article was a very unprofessional cheapshot.

  84. RedZone November 18, 2011 8:12 am

It’s about time and place. Not the right time. Not the right place.

  85. haka November 18, 2011 8:20 am

In hindsight, I probably should not have posted the writing. I never intended to in the first place, but was trying to accommodate CoolEthan. There was absolutely no pre-mediation to it. I very simply reacted to Cool’s post. I have the utmost respect to ST and the blog and will be very careful in posting going forward. Think before you stink I guess. Leaving the hale with the bow of a dojo exit and putting slippah’s back on. Aloha all and see you at the game!

  90. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 18, 2011 8:26 am

I don’t particularly care for Reardon’s articles usually. However, I don’t see how his latest article is a “cheap shot”.

If people say that Reardon should be able to take what he dishes, the same should be said for Mack. If Mack can chastise a reporter in front of his peers, then he should be more than capable of taking it right back.

UH West Oahu. It’s the four-year school.

As I understand it, if you attend a four-year school that does not play football, your football eligibility clock does not trigger.

But I think that UH West Oahu is located on the LCC campus.

  93. Couch potato November 18, 2011 8:31 am

For all the Mike Leach lovers.

If Mike has “interest” in the Tulane job, there is no reason why Hawaii wouldn’t make his interest list should the job become available.

Criticism is the judgement of the merits and faults of the work or actions of an individual or group by another (the critic). To criticize does not necessarily imply to find fault, but the word is often taken to mean the simple expression of an objection against prejudice, or a disapproval.

Another meaning of criticism is the study, evaluation, and interpretation of events. The goal of this type of criticism is to understand the work or event more thoroughly.

With that said it’s not that one criticize’s but it’s how one goes about doing it. I would suggest that you read this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism

Here is what will happen next to Don Weir’s application for the upcoming seat on the Stadium Authority.

First of all, there are three seats coming up on the Stadium Authority between December 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012. According to a senior staff member in the Abercrombie Administration, the Governor will make an interim appointment on or after December 1 for the first seat. That person will then be vetted and approved by the State Senate shortly after the Legislature opens on Wednesday, January 18, 2012.

The other two appointments will take place during the 2012 Session, but the individuals will not take office until July 1, 2012.

Based upon information provided directly to me which I then passed along to Don, he will first be interviewed on the phone in order to ascertain if there will be a need for a face-2-face interview with senior staff and then probably with the Governor.

Someone made the comment in yesterdays posts that the focus should be on building a new stadium on or near the Manoa campus. That will not happen anytime soon nor will a new stadium be built anywhere on O`ahu anytime soon. Part of the issue is the significant replacements costs and the other are the uncertainty of a number of issues such as conference realignments, mass transit, the economic shift from tourism to high technology to rising sealeves & ckunate change to __________{fill in the blank(s)}.

On a related matter – A request has been submitted to the Abercrombie Administration to investigate five different Aloha Stadium (re)development proposals to underwrite both short- and long-term maintenance & facilities improvements.

So far, the response has been relatively positive in terms of further discussing the five issues and working with legislators, constituents, and representatives of groups which could benefit from one or more of the proposals.

Getting back to the openings on the Authority – if anyone else here wants to apply, here is the on-line contact information: http://hawaii.gov/gov/about/boards-commissions.html

If you need help or information not listed on the site, please feel free to ask.

Off to work – hope to see some of you at the Wahine basketball tournament tonight.

ST….UH-West Oahu is opening up their new campus in Kapolei next fall, I believe.

Also….geez, wonder how many of the Warriors had that stomach virus at last week’s game? Most of us wouldnt even go work, and yet these young men played a football game….in 30 degree weather???

  102. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 8:46 am

Maybe I should have paid more attention.

But it was cold, and I was focusing on covering practice because Thursday is the last day reporters are allowed to interview players before a Saturday game.

But usually if McMackin is annoyed with me, he’ll pull me to the side, and we’ll “debate.” It’s the same with the other coaches and players. I’m there every practice. I’d rather people tell me their beef than to find out later.

As for those two, hey, I stay out of it. They’re both grown men.

Nice to learn that Elesu is joining the program. Better late than never. Now, I’m waiting for Chad Lopati and the two Kahuku players, Tigi Hill and the linebacker who’s name escapes me to be eligible.

I also think that one of the priorities in recruiting is signing a kicker with long range potential. Hadden has had injuries so I don’t know if it’s a one time thing or if it’s a recurring problem. Be that as it may, we can always get walk-on kickers, but I do think we should scholarship another one. This year, you can point to 2 losses to the kicking. A good kicker is worth in gold. Dan Kelly was money in 2007. In 2008 he wasn’t as good.

This Fresno State game has a different feel to it. Lot’s of anticipation. So much riding on this game. Coaches lives could change. In three weeks this could be all over. (I hope not) Not looking forward to the end of the football season.

  110. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 8:58 am

There is a lot of drama entering this game.

Bulldogs are going to be fun to watch. They have three sub-4.4 receivers, and Derek Carr has quite an arm.

    Not sure why they’re 3-7.

  111. Wes'side Warrior November 18, 2011 8:58 am

We complain about our fair-weather fans. But lots of these types of fans are swayed by media, whether positive or negative. People expect the media to have up-to-date, accurate, and verified information. Even if that info is slanted or biased, many believe it to be gospel, especially if it comes from (a) specific source(s). Take the Heisman voting by the talking heads, for example.

As difficult as this season has been, I’d much rather see articles rallying the troops and fans, to close out the season on a positive note.

Sure, we were coming off of a great year. And due to our returning QB, we were preseason favorites heading in, despite having so many question marks in most key areas. Most of us believed the hype; some more or less cautiously than others. What’s happened has happened. It’s behind us. We need our coaches, team, and fans to focus on the task at hand. That happens to be Fresno State tomorrow. Nothing else.

Not forgetting what’s happened. Just trying to focus on what’s up.

    And with that…

    Go, Warriors!!!

  112. LizKauai November 18, 2011 9:00 am

In the past, it often took a common enemy to get people to stop tussling amongst themselves to unite FOR something.

I love that we are growing up enough to identify and unite around the good things we see- even if they are only moments of brilliance.

    It feels good.

And when we are happy, our strength increases, the body, mind and soul rejoices and we play better on the field and in the clubhouse. 😆

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  113. d1shima November 18, 2011 9:02 am

Bulldogs are going to be fun to watch. They have three sub-4.4 receivers, and Derek Carr has quite an arm.

I’m sure there are no shortages of opinions in that hardware store over in Raisin Land!

  114. Couch potato November 18, 2011 9:02 am

conversely, nothing wrong sounding to this sentence. “I think gals with strong legs are valuable.”

  115. Stretch November 18, 2011 9:06 am

Most times, everything printed and said on the radio, is the “politically correct” stuff. If you know what people REALLY want to write or say, it would be too shocking for most of the fans to comprehend. Just like DR’s column, it’s shocking but really, it’s what people are thinking and saying behind the scenes.

  116. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 9:11 am

This season has been quite an education.

I’ve learned the difference between tibia and fibula, and that lisfranc is not French currency.

  117. kev-1 November 18, 2011 9:14 am

Okay ST, I know you know something from being at practice and stuff. Who’s the starting QB? COME ON! You know.

For me, I am torn. I am super excited to see what Graves can do, but have also lobbied for Austin to get his shot in the past too. I just want a winner back there, that’s all.

    CAN’T WAIT!!!!

Differences aside . . . This is a statement game for this team. Heck, this is a statement stretch of 3 games for this team. I have a feeling they will RISE UP!

  118. Couch potato November 18, 2011 9:15 am

again, nothing wrong with an editorial piece as it is just the opinion of the writer. the writer can be an advocate or the devil, no matter. editorials take on the current topics or events and allows the readers to form opinions whether pro or con. you know, stir up the debate, which is happening in this case.

c’mon people, you no can let these things take away your focus in what you believe. just stay the course and whatever happens happens.

    GO WARRIORS!

1 thing I find hard to ignore is that everyone talks about wins vs losses…and I understand Mack is a Head Coach…but no one talks about what he’s done off the field…Helping these young men realize that they are here to play football and get a education…People forget these are Student-Athletes And Mack has a genuine concern for their well being and future off the field…

  122. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 9:22 am

    kev-1:

    I thought it was Graves.

    No doubt in my mind.

And then when he nearly upchucked during our interview, I was back to: “I don’t have a clue.”

I do think that Graves is mis-typed. He has a strong arm.

And Austin apparently can scramble. He had a nice run against the No. 1 defense. Several teammates then yelled: And they say he can’t run.

Back to Graves: Know how a pitcher has to throw high and tight to establish the inside part of the plate? Graves needs to puke just once on a scramble, and guaranteed defenders will think twice before hitting him.

  123. Old Diver November 18, 2011 9:29 am

  132. kev-1 November 18, 2011 9:40 am

So maybe health reasons will make Austin the starter. Whoever it is, I want them with good, meaningful reps before BYU comes to town.

Wouldn’t it be great if when the UH football team came out of the tunnel they had on Green and white unis with White helmets with a certain UHRainbow on it? Just for old times sake.

  133. Old Diver November 18, 2011 9:40 am

I remember after McMackin took over, he brought along a hydration specialist.

    We’re like: What?

Turns out she was in charge of making sure the players had the proper amount of water during training camp.

And that’s when I learned the difference between hydration and hydraulic.

I feel that the negative talk about the coach and team should wait until the last game has been played. Everything can be addressed then. Doing it now just creates a destructive influence. Whether you like the decisions and performance or not, everyone on the team is working their asses off. Nobody is kicking back and just collecting a paycheck or free tuition. Ragging on a coach isn’t going to make him a better coach, midseason.

  149. madeinhawaii November 18, 2011 10:34 am

I have to wonder what the players feel when they read all the negativity regarding their coaches. I can’t imagine that they are happy about it.

  150. LizKauai November 18, 2011 10:34 am

“The coach of the Oklahoma State University women’s basketball team and his longtime assistant coach were killed when a small plane carrying them home from a recruiting trip crashed into heavily wooded terrain in central Arkansas, university officials said Friday.

The crash killed Coach Kurt Budke, a father of three, who was celebrated on the Stillwater, Okla., campus for reviving Cowgirls basketball after taking over the struggling program in 2005. He led the women into postseason playoffs each of the past five years, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Also killed was Miranda Serna, an assistant coach and aggressive recruiter for the program. She had helped build a promising roster of young players; this year’s team has five freshmen and five sophomores.”

Speaking of, when we were in Maui with Wahine Softball, we saw the UH Maui campus (soon to be a four year institution) and it looked pretty nice.

STARK contrast to what is SUPPOSED to be the “flagship” campus here on Oahu….

  165. MOONSURFER November 18, 2011 11:22 am

Mr. Reardon, You strike me as a guy who was bullied growing up and now enjoys ganging up and stepping on people who’s down. My favorite saying is,”IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE, LOOK AROUND YOU.” A head coach actually is an administrator. His asst. coaches and players sums up who he is. When he looses key people, the equation changes . He becomes vulnerable. So people like you can feast on his dire situation . Coach Mac is a football coach .(you’re not) He has the knowledge and experence but the most important thing is he has PASSION. I know he always will back up his coahes and players 100%. We should show some surpport and continue backing coach Mac and our team…. “GO WARRIORS!!!”

Write something positive and you are a homer.

    Those who write nothing are?

  169. Ralph November 18, 2011 11:28 am

Dave Reardon is a columnist, he wrote a piece on Coach Mac inability to adequately communicate his thoughts on an open forum (media day, etc., interviews, etc) and much of what Mac said raised eyebrows.

Reardon’s article isn’t what is negative, its coach’s Mac “failure to communicate” that is negative in what he said and how he said it during interviews.

What bothers is the time coach Mac used to do the interviews with 3 writers, including Reardon, when he should have been coaching. After practice, no problem, during practice, come on.

  174. Couch potato November 18, 2011 11:36 am

practices are scripted, asst coaches are there to teach and coach. the hc walks around to see if things are following the script.

  175. AdmrVT November 18, 2011 11:36 am

Look, if Reardon thinks talking to press for 15 minutes during practice is a problem, then solution is no press allowed to communicate with any coaches or players during practice or they will be barred. End of story and no further reason to question or criticize the coaches, right? Is that really what Dave R wants?

    Ah, good times.

  177. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 11:42 am

C’mon, (defensive) end in sight was pretty funny, right?

  178. jm2375 November 18, 2011 11:43 am

Hope coach Dana can bring in some bigs. She has a brutal schedule this year.

  185. Wes'side Warrior November 18, 2011 11:49 am

I must say, ST has come up with lots of great Blog Titles, this year especially!

  186. Kevin November 18, 2011 11:51 am

Riley Wallace looked either bored or annoyed on Monday night sitting courtside at the basketball game.

Still, Gib’s run in with his clipboard is NO match for the tossing of the sports jacket.

  187. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 11:54 am

But I like I said, I wasn’t really dialed in to what those two were arguing about.

It was cold. I was jet-lagged. And my primary job was to find out whether Royce Pollard was going to play. Well, OK, I know what those two were arguing about, but that’s between them.

  188. Ralph November 18, 2011 11:54 am

Coach Dana needs to recruit size, next season recruits are guards, jumping ahead to next season they will have only 3 forwards, Jackson, Adolpho (wvb) and Tagalicod. Kuehu could be moved to F but Dana needs depth.

  189. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 11:57 am

    Kevin:

Oh, Riley has had that stupid look since his Cardinals won another World Series.

It’s the same dumbfounded look I sport when my Jets can’t tackle a 240-pound quarterback who can’t throw.

  190. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 12:00 pm

    Kevin:

That’s nice. You wake up to read the blog.

I’m not sure I’m always awake when I write the blog.

  191. Ralph November 18, 2011 12:00 pm

CP when we are losing to teams such as UNLV, SJST, Utah State and Nevada and barely beating Idaho, I would think the HC would be fully focused on his team, including his assistant coaches and that he made sure everyone was paying attention to the “script” in detail.

  192. Uniwarrior November 18, 2011 12:16 pm

    ST 122: LMAO …good one!

  193. Shoko November 18, 2011 12:18 pm

I guess the moral of DR’s story is to not aggravate comlumnist because, unlike beat writers who have to be objective, they are the ones that can express their opinions freely without compromising their journalistic integrity.

  194. ai-eee-soos November 18, 2011 12:22 pm

What – ” DR ” and “journalistic integrity” are in the same sentence ? ai yah.

  203. A-House November 18, 2011 12:37 pm

    QB strategy:

start Austin because Graves is still sick or start Graves regardless of health to disassemble Fresno’s defensive startegy – let each play a quarter or a full half?

if the key is WR, does it matter who is the QB? just key on the receivers – play them tight as the 2011 receivers have a difficult time “breaking free” from DBs – just watch the pass interference calls and if the same officiating crew from Reno and USU games, pound the UH receivers when they go out of bounds as this crew did not call any late hits out of bounds – continue until it’s called.

how can a UH receiver run the “wrong route” if they make their play based on what the defense gives them? if the WR goes out when the QB thinks in, is that running the wrong route?

how often in 2011 has the “inside bubble screen” worked for long yards? best I recall, NONE. why keep using it? perhaps a QB option would be more effective?

why must UH outside receivers be so far away? to widen the field – has not worked – ball takes much onger to reach the receiver – why not use tall receivers next to the tackles to block or confuse the defense? would it not be better in “red zone” situations for UH tall WR to be “inside” of the DB? end zone interference has ball on the 2 yd line with 1st and goal!

who is in charge of defensive and/or offensive strategy?

#188 – last conversation with coach Dana was find her a 6′ 4″ center.

perhaps using Aldopho sooner may help – when I spoke with her, I mentioned that she could occupy the middle and she said that’s the idea.

  206. WarriorMojo November 18, 2011 12:46 pm

Thanks, CP. A friend of mine is still trying to find a bar showing the game. In Hawaii that is.

Same 10ft player signs with the Rainbow Wahine and UH OH…. NCAA gotta take a look here…. 🙄

She’s originally from Jamaica, so maybe she would love Hawaii…

  212. d1shima November 18, 2011 1:22 pm

Early this season I commented on former NaMaSU HC, Hal Mumme’s “innovative” approach to dealing with 4th downs in his McMurry U.(Abilene, TX) season opener.

The Warhawks bounced back from that loss to DII Stephen F Austin by winning 8 of their next 9 games to get a spot in the DIII playoffs.

The creator of the Air Raid offense has it going on again. McMurry is averaging 471 yards and almost 41 points per game. Next season he is planning on taking the program up to the DII level.

    @Al… Yes, Lasi is Nate Ilaoa’s brother-in-law. 🙂

  215. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 18, 2011 1:56 pm

What are the main differences between the Air Raid and RnS?

I’ve read that the AR utilizes designed routes that WR run, whereas the RnS does not.

    Wrong? Anything else?

  216. Uniwarrior November 18, 2011 2:07 pm

I repeat: Whatever happens in today and tomorrow next week next month…lets join together as a “team” and support the choices of the coaches.

Is it O.K. to post more JJ stuff ? cut/paste

SMU’s Jones compares Houston QB to Packers’ Rodgers

    By Associated Press

    POSTED: 09:06 a.m. HST, Nov 18, 2011

    Share

HOUSTON >> SMU coach June Jones sees a lot of another quarterback in Houston’s Case Keenum, just not the one you’d expect.

When he coached Hawaii, Jones helped Tim Chang become the NCAA’s career leader in total offense and passing yards between 2000-04. Keenum has eclipsed Chang’s records — and a few others — while guiding No. 11 Houston (10-0, 6-0 Conference USA) to the best start in program history.

Jones and the Mustangs (6-4, 4-2) will face Keenum and the Cougars’ top-ranked offense on Saturday at Robertson Stadium. As he’s watched Keenum pick apart defenses this season, Jones is reminded not of Chang, but more of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Why is this SMU crap in the Star Advertiser to begin with?

Any Army links??? Ellerson used to coach at Hawaii.

Any Georgia Tech news??? Johnson used to coach at Hawaii.

I think the only SMU news people want to read in the SA is “Hawaii runs and shoots all over SMU in the Hawaii Bowl.”

  223. papajoe2 November 18, 2011 2:35 pm

Isn’t one of SMU’s running backs among the nation leaders in rushing? Seems like, although we throw a lot, the running game can keep the defense off balance. Last week’s game against Reno, the tv just caught Iosefa’s long run on the 1st play of the broadcast, because of the late previous game. I like. Run ’em first, then pass the heck out of them, then throw in a few runs again.

And YOU, Mr. Kevin, how can your mind even think that way about Regis Philbin?! We’re talking about REGIS PHILBIN for cripes sakes!! The man’s like 80 years old! Shame, Kevin, shame!!!

  294. LOL™ November 18, 2011 8:00 pm

As difficult as this season has been, I’d much rather see articles rallying the troops and fans, to close out the season on a positive note.

Sounds like you are advocating for the sort of “free” press which exists in North Korea where everything about the glorious leader is good and how there aren’t any problems in the great DPRK.

Maybe I should ask what you think the role of columnists in the free press are for? To look pretty and occupy space perhaps? Maybe the columnists should all be fired and that rules be put in place so that all editorials and opinion pieces are nothing but hunky dory rah-rah spin. Whatever, I don’t expect much of any sort of reasonable response so I don’t why I even bother.

While some are taking exception to the negative tone of Reardon’s article, the fact of the matter is that the underlying message hits home regarding one of the head coaches key roles. Communication is important because one of the main responsibilities of any head coach is public relations. He or she becomes the face and voice of the program they represent and they have to be able to communicate effectively with recruits and the general public. When the going gets tough, the coach has to also be able to field the difficult questions. Mack has a tendency to say he doesn’t want to make any excuses, but then comes up with excuses anyway. And you wonder why some of us have no confidence in this coach.

Can anyone honestly say that some of McMackin’s faux pas has not brought embarassment to not only the program but also to the state that it represents? Can anyone honestly say that some of his recent berating of the customers of his product on some of his call the coaches program were justified? (I happened to be listening to the one after this past game.) Can anyone honestly say that at $1.1 million an year, the returns on that investment are justified based not only on just wins and losses but overall in terms of how the UH football program is perceived nationally during his tenure?

While 15 minutes may not seem like much, the point is it shows a lack of focus by the head coach regarding the task at hand. Didn’t Hawaii just lose the previous week at home with the opponent coming from behind by 28 points? McMackin seems to let these external things which he has little control of to distract him to the point where he finds there is a need to address them. But because of his poor ability to articulate them verbally without losing his train of thought in the process, often times ends up putting his foot in his mouth making the matter even worse.

Maybe some people like to have all of their news spinned and glossed over but if that is the case, then what is the need for editorialized content which presents multiple points of views/opinions meant to spur independent thinking? Furthermore, any rational person understands that sports fans are far from the most rational bunch when their team loses. What most fans tend to spout off needs to be taken with a grain of salt as rarely are those rants constructive or articulated in any meaningful way. UH supporters think we have the worst bunch of bandwagon fans but the reality is this is true at most other mid-major programs. The recent articles by Ferd and Dave are nothing compared to the viciousness of their mainland counterparts.

What I also find laughable is how some always go on about how all this negative talk on forums, blogs, and now the media affect the coaches, players, and recruits. Give me a break. See above about taking things a fan says with a grain of salt. Furthermore, coaches know that it comes with the territory as part of their profession. If they cannot handle it, then maybe they should not be coaching. Athletes also realize this and usually don’t let it affect them. Ever seen how some parents act at pop warner games? This desensitizing starts at an early age. Football is a violent sport and anything negative spoken or written is mild in comparison to what takes place on the field. If anything, most coaches and athletes have a big chip on their shoulder and tend to want to prove the naysayers wrong when the going gets tough by stepping it up. If they cannot get themselves motivated or fired up on their own initiative, the results tend to speak for itself where there is no fight or effort on the field.

Anyone who knows that when they are in the public eye, that criticism is part of the gig. Even those who blog know this when they write something. It is expected they will be open to potential negative responses in their comments section and it takes a thick skin to be able to take that criticism and handle it gracefully without lashing out at the poster instead of taking the message to task. Witness how some here and in the comments section of his article attack Reardon for what he wrote as opposed to attacking the message and refuting that what he wrote isn’t true. Some commenters there are also attacking Tsai and all his Tsaiko’s as koolaid drinkers which is equally untrue as not all long time Tsaiko’s are pleased with the head coach (per what I have read in the comments here; those long time Tsaiko can call me out on this if I mistook what they wrote.) I actually give Tsai a lot of credit for taking some unfair personal potshots here, handling it gracefully and often times with humor, while continuing to allow dissenters to post their opinions without having those comments initially moderated.

Na Wahine down by only 4 points at the half, they need better ball movement and player movement to get a shot off. Portland took 37 shots to UH’s 18. Luckily the Pilots are shooting bricks. They hold the TO and Rebound edge, 4 to 13 in TO and 23 to 17 in boards.

Jackson with only 4 shots, made them all, so why aren’t the wings getting the ball to her. Oh, they must be candy eyeing Duffer.

Maybe we should post his salary and compare it to others in the industry and let’s all compare who is worthy of their salaries and who is not? (I don’t care that the difference is public vs private).

WOW! Nuff said. I say let’s move on. Regarding the Assistant Coaches losing their jobs. Well when you get into the business, you know at any given time you might be fired. That is why they should have some bank to cover them until they go to the convention after season. If they do not have a year of expenses in the bank…sorry. Those Coaches get paid lots of kala. Much more then many folks here make a year.

  314. Ralph November 18, 2011 8:48 pm

Na Wahine problems, defense and no ball movement. Kamilah had 4 shots at half, with under 7 minutes to go in the game, she has taken 5 shots total.

  316. Ralph November 18, 2011 8:51 pm

Na Wahine down by 10, Pilots with 56 shots to UH’s 31. Too many chances, but their bricks are keeping us in the game. Someone has to step forward and make some shots for the Na Wahine.

  317. PolyMom November 18, 2011 8:54 pm

BTW in 2009 I had to call Shannon McMackin early that morning from LA when the gay slur was heard. I have to be honest, he should have been fired right then and there. Gay, straight, Christian, Buddhist, Quaker, Shaker, NO PUBLIC employee should say hurtful things about ANYONE! IMHO.

  318. Ralph November 18, 2011 8:58 pm

Na Wahine down by 15 with 5 minutes to go, 3 starters with 0 FG’s in the 2nd half, Jackson, Campaniero, Bello, with Haydel with 1 FG. Arbuckle may have gotten a FG this half.

  322. madeinhawaii November 18, 2011 9:11 pm

This “Go for Broke” thing is being put way out of proportion. I mean, if McMackin was never exposed to the term, why should he be expected to be that familiar with it? My father was a Japanese WWII vet. I’m very proud of him and his contributions. Yet, I wouldn’t expect every US Citizen to know his story… or the story or my Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles in Manzanar, Minitoka, Topaz and the other 7 internment camps. How many can name even 5 of the camps off the top of their heads?

  323. Ralph November 18, 2011 9:13 pm

Na Wahine lose by 20, 83-63 while shooting 50%. Unfortunately they took 40 shots to the Pilots 67, had more TO and were out rebounded 38 to 26.

  324. LizKauai (macbook) November 18, 2011 9:17 pm

“In this Day the secrets of the earth are laid bare before the eyes of men. The pages of swiftly-appearing newspapers are indeed the mirror of the world. They reflect the deeds and the pursuits of divers peoples and kindreds. They both reflect them and make them known. They are a mirror endowed with hearing, sight and speech. This is an amazing and potent phenomenon. However, it behoveth the writers thereof to be purged from the promptings of evil passions and desires and to be attired with the raiment of justice and equity. They should enquire into situations as much as possible and ascertain the facts, then set them down in writing.”

  328. LOL™ November 18, 2011 9:25 pm

    Reardon’s article is ridiculous.

Boom! Perfect example of what I wrote earlier. Rather than just simply state the article is ridiculous, why not annotate with the reasons why.

Care to explain how it was not true that McMackin has had certain lapses in judgement in some things which he has said in public which were inappropriate for someone of his stature? Was not one of his cardinal rules when he took over the program for his players to not bring embarrassment to the program. By extension, that would also apply to the coaching staff (leadership by example anyone), yet the coach made some very public gaffs on his own which brought unwarranted attention on UH. Please spare me how some of this was all in the past and now water under the bridge, because it is pertinent as to the reason why some of us were done with McMackin early on.

Also, I mentioned in my other post it was just 15 minutes but care to explain why is McMackin being distracted wasting any bit of time letting Reardon know how displeased he was with something that he wrote, as opposed to focusing on things he has control over, like his football team? Funny, but I remember McMackin always responded to his critics that he does not read the news nor read online message boards and blogs. So if he doesn’t read the news, how can be spend the time scolding a columnist for what they wrote in the first place? If he is going to berate someone, that means he has to read it so as to have all his facts in place. I’m not stupid enough to not know that they have handlers collecting some that information for them. My point is that anyone with more than a clue and brain can see through this BS and call a spade for a spade. This meant that he has to spend time looking at this and then crafting a response. That is time that he should be spending on more important things like the football team. Oh, and I know someone is going to say that is what the assistants are for as all he has to do is oversee and make sure everything is going as planned — which is missing the point completely. Bottomline, there is a matter of perception and the coach should not be bothering wasting time on trivial external matters until after the end of the season because he has more important things on his plate to deal with. I can see if something that was written was completely untruthful but in this case, the criticisms have merit and he has been provided a very long leash by the local media to begin with.

If this one simple point flew over yours and everyone elses heads who just sees this article as sour grapes for being scolded by the head coach, then you are clearly grasping at straws in finding something to cling on to with this coach in terms of where he should be prioritizing his efforts and time. Yeah, this one incident is just 15 minutes but how many others have their been where his mind was occupied with something else? Or maybe people like myself are completely out to lunch and have it all wrong where it is completely Reardon’s fault for not writing the article in an easy to understand manner that someone with middle school reading skills could comprehend. Whichever way, this clearly shows the divide amongst the fanbase where people on either side are going to be primarily receptive to their own point of view and not the ones of those they disagree with. So is it any surprise why I gave up my season tickets after the ’09 season and did not do the same during the F.vA. years? It’s not all about wins and losses as Reardon mentioned (I disagree with him there); it’s also about all the other stuff which comes with being a head coach and coach Mack at least to me is proving to be the opportunist that he is with the contract that he was given (not his fault; that lies on the administration)

Ignoring the fact there is a sizable discontent with McMackin does no one any favors because that has a direct revenue impact on UH. Even if the team wins out, the damage has been done as far as how the general public perceives this coaching staff. A decision by decisive leadership on his fate was something that needed to be made several games ago probably after the SJSU game, but Hawaii has a systemic problem where proactiveness is not a strong trait and the term “decisive leadership” is an oxymoron. So it should not be surprising we often end up a day late and a dollar short. It is what it is. Finally, there might be some attractive names who have been out of college football coaching that want to return under the right circumstances, so here is some food for thought. Some of those folks are really smart (look at Leach, he has a J.D. from Pepperdine) and will do their due diligence if the UH position opens up and they haven’t already been snagged away by some other school before UH has had a chance to make a final decision. It isn’t exactly a well kept secret of how backasswards things can be in Hawaii not to mention the common sense challenges of geography and increased costs. If I were to put myself in their shoes, money no longer becomes a primary consideration because no amount of money is worth it if you have to deal with the sort of insanity it takes to get things accomplished here. And then we’ve got split opinions on those who fall in the “must have local ties” to “local ties not required but must be culturally sensitive” camps which means you can file a lot of potential candidates into the trash bin.

MIH — I agree. My father was 442nd and in Punchbowl so we know the meanings of “Go for Broke”. I wouid not expect most people to pick up the significance of that from a half century ago. Whether Coach Mack picked up the nuance or not, the caller is right– the team has to “Go for Broke”. I think they will!

To those who do not know the motto and it’s significance in Hawaii lore. see:

  335. jeezy33 November 18, 2011 9:39 pm

    323. I think its just 1 small example of Mack not being able to connect and communicate with most of the people in Hawaii.

Mack has a history of saying outrageous things on air and being able to communicate properly as a leader and as someone who represents Hawaii has been poor. Like the article states, if you are winning, most of those things would be over looked. When you start losing, then a lot of actions will be under scrutiny.

It goes back to Mack’s comments about Notre Dame in his 1st year. All the way to not being able to name his players correctly numerous times on the Bobby Curran show. He even thought he was in Houston after the San Jose loss. Dead serious and Bobby had to correct him. He thought Hardy Tuilau was recruited in Washington.

As a DC, I think Mack is a very capable coach.

As a Head Coach where you are the leader, I think we have issues.

Yes he is a nice guy. When he was hired, I wanted him to have success as I want all of our Warrior teams to do well. It’s year 4 now, and I just haven’t seen the improvements like he vouched for when he took the job. He is falling short of his expectations. We can’t just keep making excuses for him. Yeah injuries are taking its toll but we were losing games before we were injured. The losses aren’t what bugs me the most. We lost games in the June Jones era and losses happen. It’s how we lose and who we lose to. Even when we win some of our games, it’s like we didn’t deserve to win. Hawaii played 10x better against Utah St than Idaho. Yet Idaho, a W shows up and a L shows up against Utah St.

As a whole, look at each unit and see if we made strides over the years.

QB- Besides Moniz, I don’t feel like we have successfully recruited a QB capable of running this offense up to standards of Hawaii passing offense.

RB- I am satisfied with our RB play over the years. Would be more important to have good WRs in this offense though.

WR- So far, I haven’t see the type of WRs who can run after catch with the ball. Our WRs are capable but not good enough to compete with the better teams. Hoping Davis and Amadi are the answer. As well as Gant.

OL- Oline play hasn’t improved yet. Even with our healthy guys, I don’t see the O line being better than average. Next year, its like wel be almost starting from scratch again breaking in inexperienced guys.

DL- One of the few bright spots. Still missing good edge rushers like we had in Veikune, Laboy, and Alama Francis though.

LBs- I would say I am satisfied with our LB play.

DBs- I have seen improvement. Still very inconsistent at times. My biggest problem is I feel like our DBs have been in the right spot multiple times and just couldn’t make a play on the ball. Don’t know if thats a coaching issue where we don’t work on things enough at practice or our guys just arent coming up with big plays.

Special Teams- Saying we have done a poor job is being nice. When our fans get excited for putting a XP through the uprights, you know you’re expectations have lowered a lot.

I know going into this year, the goal was a WAC championship. So while the topic of late has been we can still win 2 games and make a bowl game, in my opinion, that still isn’t good enough. I would like to win out. But even if we do, I don’t think that reaches our goal. Just my opinion.

I mean do we care who plays in the 7th and 5th place games at the Maui Invitational or Diamond Head Classic? That is kind of what the Hawaii Bowl feels like sometimes. We had a average season. So here’s a consolation prize for you guys. It’s great for the seniors to go out and play a last game, but in the end, the game is nothing more than a goodwill game that no one in America really pays attention to.

    I think I made $65,000 last year.

I don’t get paid for the blog.

  337. Hank November 18, 2011 9:50 pm

I for one am tired of hearing about how much money Mack makes…it’s repeated every time he loses…hey, he didn’t hold a gun to our head…we gave him that contract.

  338. Hank November 18, 2011 9:50 pm

    Dave is on a mission.

  339. Hank November 18, 2011 9:53 pm

He is right though when he says all Mack has to do is win.

…winning makes the whining go away.

#329 Thanks for your rant. Sorry you missed out on a great 2010 season where Mo, Salas, Pilares, and Green gave us many thrills. As this is a public blog, you are free to express your, opinions and discontent. Many have gone before you with similar claims. What I have been waiting for is a reasonable and financially sound proposal stating the pitfalls of a buyout and what would be needed to get a new coach like Leach. I’d also welcome hearing about your plan to attract and keep top level assistant coaches. Where do you see the extra funding coming from to cover the $1 to $1.5 million cost of a top level coach? So far, I’ve heard a lot of barking and howling. It reminds me of dogs barking because other dogs bark. So far there has been no substance in the way of a viable plan. Until then, I remain a Warrior fan, showing my support for young men and their coaches who “Go for Broke” representing their school.

  343. Old Diver November 18, 2011 10:03 pm

Blog tip number one. If you want people to read your post keep them short and to the point.

  344. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2011 10:03 pm

In fairness, I think McMackin was griping about the Punahou mafia story for about 3 minutes. He spent about 10 minutes arguing with Bobby. It wasn’t a strategic or scout session he was missing.

Other than that, everything else Dave wrote is fair game. I like Dave but thought the part about practice was unnecessary to the column. The rest of the column falls under free speech.

  345. AlaWai November 18, 2011 10:10 pm

Old D., good tip. BTW if we lived in Bangkok we’d be rich, but we’d have to read about how lousy our elephant polo team coach was.

  346. 3-Prong November 18, 2011 10:11 pm

I have a feeling we’re going to see improved offensive line play with the quarterback getting the ball out more in rhythm. Hope to see the next “Rolo” tomorrow.

  347. Kevin November 18, 2011 10:13 pm

    Keep posts short?

Well, reading comprehension is not the strong suits of some people here as I have noticed lately… good idea.

But then again sometimes you gotta SPELL THINGS OUT for some people also.

  348. Da Punchbowl Kid November 18, 2011 10:16 pm

I might have the same negative feelings about Coach that some of the so called “negative” posters have. Then again, I might not.

The difference here is, that for the sake of the team, for the players that go out and lay it on the line and come away with broken bodies and hearts as they struggle through a difficult season, I WILL NOT post anything which will diminish their spirits or discredit their efforts or their school or their coaches during the season.

    LET THE PLAYERS PLAY!

I’m as “pecked off” as any fan, but I can’t see why repeated attacks on the coach is something which is somehow “helpful” to the players or the program at this particular point in time. After the season is pau, we have plenty time to analyze and discuss the situation. But for now, the team needs positive reinforcement, not continuous criticism of the ones entrusted to lead them. What do you think that does to their morale?

I may agree 100% with certain posters, but what you say and when you say it makes a big difference in your effectiveness for the team’s sake. TIMING IS EVERYTHING.

I mean no disrespect to any posters here, because I truly believe we are ALL Warriors fans here. I simply urge all my friends here to consider what they post and when they post it. At the end of the day, what best serves the team?

My aloha to all here. I say my mana’o for the last time, because I’m not here to beef with anybody.

Ho’omanawanui! Aloha kekahi i kekahi! Malama kakou na Koa keia manawa!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  350. RedZone November 18, 2011 10:20 pm

DPK I agree. It is all about timing. I support the team and the coaches are a part of the team.

  351. R Smoke November 18, 2011 10:31 pm

Reardon’s article was obviously him expressing his personal dislike of Coach Mac. He’s lucky to have a job where he gets to express his personal opinions and get paid for it, but that’s all that article was…an opinion. Again, the worst UH has done under Coach Mac is 6-7, yet to read his articles you would think they were continually 0-12. 2 bowls in 3 years. Who gets fired for that?

  352. Da Punchbowl Kid November 18, 2011 10:32 pm

    #337 –

And you earn every “fr i g gin” cent of that. When the Sa wants to do a commercial, who do they show in the on-the-field interview scene? I’m not a kool aid drinking zombie. I go to practice and I know what I see with my own two eyes.

BTW, I think Readon is an excellent writer too. That doesn’t mean he gets it right everytime. Nobody does.

  353. jeezy33 November 18, 2011 10:33 pm

    #349, well said.

For me, I voice my opinion based on the things I hear Mack say on air. Maybe I take it personal or the wrong way, but his words do rub me the wrong way.

It’s not only the comments such a “we have a lot of guys hurt but I’m not making any excuses” comments but more of the comments he directs to FANS in general. He says over and over things like “don’t listen to what the people say about the team. We have each others back and we’re not gonna quit.” Then he follows those statements with I don’t read the blogs or message boards. So why is he even addressing these issues on his Mack Show and Bobby Curran show? He should be ignoring it publicly and encouraging fans to come out to the game and try promoting ways to bring students to Aloha Stadium. As a coach, part of your job is winning the fans over and I think his comments rub a lot of people the wrong way.

I am a huge baseball fan and have supported Trapasso through the up and downs. While I felt Nash wasn’t the right guy for the bball job, I wasn’t posting negative comments saying we needed to fire him. Neither of these coaches got into public battles with fans.

We all see things different but the way Coach MAck deals with adversity is what angers UH fans most in my opinion.

This blog is more of a family type blog so in respect to that, I will keep my negative feelings away for now. I definitely support our players on the team. Just hard to support a coach I have so many disagreements with over the years. And yes, winning does cure a lot.

  354. Slugger November 18, 2011 10:40 pm

  356. admrvt November 18, 2011 10:46 pm

Dave’s article is really not well written. What is he trying to say? Look at the title, then the points in sequence, then the conclusion. What is its theme and point. Does it flow? Very disjointed.

  357. Da Punchbowl Kid November 18, 2011 10:48 pm

    jeezy –

Yep winning is good. Lets’s get another “W” this week! 😉

BTW – That Leilehua – Kahuku game tonight was a classic. That was some mighty damn inspirational football! Everything you could ask for in a High School game. Like Leahey the younger said at the end of the game, it’s a shame somebody had to lose. That jumbo package that the Red Raiders used in the short yardage has three guys in the 400 pound range. Unbelievable!

So who’s it gonna be next in the big game, Puns or Red Raiders?

  358. cocobean November 18, 2011 10:49 pm

I think Graves wll start if he’s recovered from whatever ails him. The coaches probably see a lot of similarities between Graves and Reno’s Fajardo.

Austin is my preference based on his experience. He’s kinda like Timmy in that he gets the ball out quickly. He throws the ball past the the 1st down marker more than Mo, he doesn’t rely heavily on the receiver getting some yac. If the line gives him enough time. he’ll hit some big plays. His one weakness is he’ll throw quickly over the middle to avoid the rush rather than moving or throwing it away.

  359. jeezy33 November 18, 2011 10:51 pm

I think the Leilehua coaches are probably the best staff in the state but I disagree with the call to not run a play in 1st OT and kick it from the 25. The slant was open, maybe could have tried a couple draws to get a few yards. They had tons of momentum after the pic. I would played a little more aggressive with Kahuku on its heels. 40+ yard field goal is 50/50 at best in my opinion

  360. jeezy33 November 18, 2011 10:53 pm

    359. I know it was one game but the way Austin threw the ball down field against USC in last years opener just makes me wanna see more of him play. I know we don’t have those deep threat WRs right now but if he does have time, he throws a nice ball over the middle of the field.

  366. madeinhawaii November 18, 2011 11:02 pm

    Shoko,

My grandparents and youngest aunt and uncle were interned, a couple of the older ones packed their things and went along, although they weren’t obliged to go. My father was the only one in the family that enlisted hoping that by enlisting my grandparents would be treated better. To his chagrin, that was not the case at all.

My father tried to file for compensation for my grandparent’s lost property during the internment, but the family was denied because they said that the older kids were not obliged to follow their parents into the internment camp.

Had they not been interned and my father not gone into the military as an intelligence officer assigned to interview POW, he would never have met my mother and I would never have existed. They were among the last 6 war bride couples allowed to marry and departed on the last military transport plane out of Osaka, making the flight by minutes.

Life is a miracle of uncanny events.

  369. WarriorMojo November 18, 2011 11:09 pm

LOL, I LOL at you. In fact I ROFLMFAO at you.

IF this is such a big deal to Reardon, why didn’t HE make an issue out of these things LAST year? Don’t just point out that OTHER people overlook things when the team is winning. What about HIM? He’s PAID for his opinions. Well, where the hell was this opinion last year?

Dave is not a leader. He’s a follower, pure and simple. He’s not insightful; he’s reactionary. Worst of all, he PANDERS. Maybe you respect that, but I don’t.

  370. cocobean November 18, 2011 11:10 pm

Talk about Mack losing support. You should have been at the Wahine game. Seems no one had a good thing to say about Dana. Seems everyone I bumped into was critical of her X’s and O’s and her recruiting ability. The fans in front and behind me were grumbling about something or other throughout the game.

It’s going to be a long preseason with the available players. When the WAC rolls around things should improve with the addition of Adolpho(she was on the bench tonight) and Tagalicod. Kuehu should help if she can ever get healthy.

Fans will have their patience tested this season.

    RE: Reardon.

HIs column, his opinion. Obviously Mack and Reardon aren’t on each other’s Xmas card list. Reardon was probably upset that Mack berated him in front of his collegues and used his column to strike back.

My opinion. Reardon sometimes can get too full of himself. Example, in his blog he would list his vote for the top 25. When on radio he would give reasons for his vote. Not really bragging about it but he wanted people to know he has a vote in the top 25.

He started out with Oklahoma as #1 and stayed that way until week 5 even though the vast majority of voters had Alabama and LSU leap frogging OU by then. After week six when KU beat OU Dave dropped OU from #1 to #15. Seems Dave was upset at OU for betraying his faith in them as #1. Come on Dave, what’s the explanation for that?

    #323… MIH… Right on!

    #343… AlaWai… Right on!

    #349… DPK… Right on!

LOL… blah, blah, blah, communists, blah, blah, blah. Wow! Two long posts for me! How nice! All I was saying was, how is such negative articles helpful to the team and fans at a time when we need more support than ever? As stated by others above, most practices are scripted and run by assistant and positional coaches. It was also clarified by ST as to what was happening during the time Coach Mack went to talk with DR and others. Not asking for anything to be glossed over. Try some reading comprehension. My point was how those kinds of articles have an effect on others, especially fair-weather fans who do not pay attention to every specific, minute detail on a day-to-day basis, but rather those who glance over once in a while and read the doom and gloom that’s printed, and take it as gospel, even if it’s one person’s opinion.

How about, “Our football team is struggling to overcome lots of key injuries, and have had some disappointing games. But, they really need their fans to come out and support them as they close out the season with these next three games.” Then talk about the rivalry between UH and Fresno State, or whatever.

Write to get people interested in supporting the team, as opposed to giving people yet another reason to tune the game out.

Hey, I’m frustrated too. But, what good is it doing to just biotch and whine about it 24/7? We still got FOUR games to play.

    Game Day, Warriors!

Good morning Tsaikos. Game day! Checklist for today: auto repairs, yardwork, beer and pupu run, watch ‘da game online.

Interesting stories coming out of the BCS committee meetings. If they are planning to get rid of the AQ concept for conferences as reported, then:

    1) Does that put the brakes on any moves to the Big East by our future MWC brethren, etc., etc.?

    2) Since Boise has already stated that they wouldn’t leave the MWC until after next season, why would they go to the Big East for only one season of AQ cash?

Listed below is the schedule for the Warriors next season, for now:

    9/1/2012 @ USC

    9/8/2012 @ BYU

    9/15/2012 @ Lamar

If that is correct, the MWC is being kind to Hawaii; need to pay travel subsidy

    for only three games.

btw, BYU wants to cancel, or re-schedule the 9/08 game.

    “Go For Broke”, really…?

Theory by some is you hear that, or maybe say that, and it’s automatically connected to the 442nd…?

    Are you kidding me…?

I am born and raised in Hawaii, a kama’aina (+50 years old), my friends and I have used “Go For Broke” as part of our sports “lingo” all our lives, and NEVER, never, ever, not once, has any one of us or those associated meant it to reference the 442nd.

    Is DR born and raised…?

How the heck is a “malihini” (McMackin) supposed to have ANY idea the association of “Go For Broke” to 442nd.

C’mon man, you gonna come after a guy, then come correct. It damn well shouldn’t have be a stretch.

One thing I’d really like uggs clearance to touch upon is that weightloss routine fast can be achieved by the perfect diet and exercise. Someone’s size not only affects the look, but also the general quality of life. Self-esteem, depressive disorders, health risks, in addition to physical ability are influenced in fat gain. It is possible to just make everything right but still gain. In such a circumstance, a medical problem may be the perpetrator. While a lot of food and never enough physical exercise are usually accountable, common medical ailments and traditionally used prescriptions may greatly help to increase size. Thx for your post right here.

I am not paying fourteen dollars to see how this magic trick is done. There was a guy that showed up to a number of us students at an ice cream shop a week ago and ask if any of us had a dime. My friend gave the person a dime and he got out a sharpie marker and said to put her initials on the back and front of the coin. Then he pulled out a clear balloon out of his pocket and blew it up. The guy took my friends signed dime and stuck it inside the balloon through the walls. We’re able to see the dime and hear the dime within the balloon. Amazing. How on this planet can one do that? As soon as the magic trick was done he handed my best mate the balloon and said to let the air out of it and to rip it open to see if it was her signed dime. It was. I found a relevant video of the identical trick on youtube. Will someone please tell me the way they do this because I don’t have fourteen dollars to my name. http://bit.ly/coin_balloon_magic_trick_video
