Edwards set to join Warriors

Seeking an early start to his Warrior career, cornerback Mike Edwards is scheduled to arrive in Manoa this Sunday.

Edwards, who played eight games as a freshman at Tennessee in 2009, attended a junior college the past year. He is taking an online class necessary to earning enough transferrable credits. Edwards is expected to pass the class, which ends this month.

Edwards had delayed moving to Hawaii because he would not have been on scholarship until the start of the fall semester (Aug. 22). But he decided to come out early — he will pay for his own living expenses — to train with UH teammates in preparation for training camp, which  begins Aug. 1. The team provides meals and housing (the UH dance studios) for each of the 105 players during the three weeks of training camp.

“I want to get out there and work out with the team,” Edwards said.”My grade won’t (post) until the end of the month, but I’m going out there this weekend.”

We all have to learn to share. Because the band was using Ching field yesterday afternoon, some of the players decided to do additional workouts on the grass practice field. Of course, that meant scaling the locked fence.

While it would appear Vernon Podlewski could be viewed as the leading candidate to fill the vacant Warrior volleyball coaching position — he was an All-America on the 2002 championship team, played for the U.S. national team, was raised in Hawaii and was a volunteer UH coach the past season — there are other finalists still to be interviewed and HR issues to be cleared.

When the process is completed, head coach Charlie Wade gets to make the recommendation to athletic director Jim Donovan. But as Wade reminds us: “Head coaches don’t get to hire or fire anyone.”

Meanwhile, outside hitter Jan-Philipp Marks of Germany is enrolled in summer session.

Anyone have a clue as to what kind of TV options folks will have for the 2011 2012 season now that OC 16 has the rights ?

Are the days of free UH sports gone ? Will we have to subscribe to some newly created channel ?

Surely some reporter at the Star could rattle the tree over at Oceanic and find out what is going on.

  7. CoolEthan July 14, 2011 6:46 am

The options for viewing UH sports on tv without subscribtion are dwindling to only one option. Either pay, or dont watch.

Defense: The defensive line will be among the strongest in the WAC with veteran leadership all around. Senior defensive ends and defensive tackles Zach Masch, Vaughn Meatoga, Liko Satele, Alasi Toilolo and Kaniela Tuipulotu will all be fighting each other and others for minutes in two of the more deeper positions on the roster.

Even certain websites that were broadcasting sports events over the net with cfl and nfl have been confiscated.

I would rely on those when the UH games were being slinged over the net.

    No more

Feature on the tackling problems the BC Lions have been having has a lot of quotes from Sol Elimimian (one of their few reliable tacklers). Here is a small part of the article:

But beyond fundamentals, the reigning CFL rookie of the year said, a basic desire to put a ball-carrier on the ground with as much legal physical force possible is required.

“Tackling is a mindset. When you tackle somebody you have to get yourself mentally prepared. Do I want to make that tackle? You’re going to tackle if you want to tackle,” he said.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 6:57 am

At least for the next year, PPV probably will be in place for live football games.

Not sure if there will be a channel to air free replays, the way KFVE did.

Remember the intent of Oceanic bidding big bucks for the contract was to sell subscriptions and to keep competitors out of the cable market. (I think HawaiiTel is changing the latter.)

But it’s going to get complicated for 2012, when UH goes to the Mountain West. The MWC might want some sort of profit-sharing on UH’s PPV revenue.

  20. Garret July 14, 2011 6:59 am

It is nice that Mike Edwards is paying his own way to get an early start with the Warriors. Waiting for his grade to post at the end of the month would have been cutting it really close for training camp. I think that Edwards can make a big contribution this season and the Warriors can really use him.

  21. Garret July 14, 2011 7:01 am

It sounds like mainland fans will be shut out of the OC16 broadcasts of UH games, but in 2012 at least we’ll have the mtn channel for some games. In 2011 the mainland fans should have ESPN3 for games, but ESPN3 cannot show MWC games.

  22. CoolEthan July 14, 2011 7:03 am

You betcha the MWC will want a piece of that pie.

Even Boise doesn’t have the access to viewing their games for free locally with the agreements with cable.

Hawaii has been one of those venues riding the fence for free a long time

  23. huh? July 14, 2011 7:03 am

    UHAD

    sent e-mail to gov abercrombie

asked if state is indemnified from lawsuit should players get get serious injured from scaling fence

pleaded with the gov to look into the situation

told him it was ridiculous that the warrior football players have to scale fence in their own backyard , bad pr and national notoriety etc. told him that this reflects bad on the UH, besides whats so hard of getting a key to open the lock

picures of uh football (or even blog entries suggesting they did like in todays entry) players scaling fences to get to their practice facilities become the butt of national jokes, and disgrace

  24. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:03 am

Interesting that now that there is real money involved, UH uses the phrase “travel subsidies” instead of “cost-sharing.”

  25. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:09 am

    Re: Fence.

The workouts are after business hours.

UH probably is not at risk for liability because it is keeping the fence locked.

Also, these are unsupervised workouts, so no member of the UH staff — coach, trainer, groundskeeper — can be out there when players are working out with a football.

If you open the fence, let people work out without monitoring them, and then they get hurt, then you’re liable.

Players always have the option of going to a park, if they wish.

  26. CoolEthan July 14, 2011 7:11 am

    Travel subsidies vs. cost sharing

Same as a certain political party that now uses the term “investment” instead of “spending”.

    What a coincidence.

  27. mctruck July 14, 2011 7:14 am

    ST,

funny you should mention da-fence; as I was wondering bout that just moments ago.

How tall is the fence?, a considerable height would make it kinda dangerous for the big guys to scale and for all concerned……a possible peril, no?????

  28. CoolEthan July 14, 2011 7:17 am

    Light bulb idea.

Just watch the show Border Patrol.

Build a tunnel UNDER the fence.

    Problem solved.

  29. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:18 am

    CoolEthan:

I remember when they made the MWC/Big West announcements, they kept using the phrase cost-sharing.

I thought that was a ridiculous phrase because a team is supposed to be paying for its own travel. If it’s an inherent obligation, then money it receives from the host team is a subsidy.

  30. mctruck July 14, 2011 7:20 am

I’m wondering why bcs schools are already holding their supervised spring games and other schools such as UH are still in unsupervised,(aka-lockout mode), workouts??…maybe I’m watching last years stuff on the espn channels?

  31. CoolEthan July 14, 2011 7:20 am

    It is ridiculous.

But changing the wording is adding thickness to the smoke on the mirror.

  32. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:22 am

At the grass field (now known as Cooke Field), the gate is quite high. But there’s a fence near the soccer field that is maybe about 10 feet. That’s not too bad.

At Ching field (previously known as Cooke Field), the fence is Halawa-prison-high. But that gate is open because the band and running groups use the field and track.

And, if you’ll notice, you don’t see linemen climbing fences. They’re smart guys. The can work on footwork on asphalt.

  33. mctruck July 14, 2011 7:23 am

CE, ur#29…..and when it rains hard, they have a under ground swimming pool.

  34. mctruck July 14, 2011 7:25 am

    lunchtime…..out.

  35. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:27 am

    McTruck:

    You’re watching replays.

In theory, the rules makes sense. Players do need time away from coaches. They’re college kids. This shouldn’t be a year-round job.

In reality, it is a year-round job.

If players work out on their own — wink, wink — what can a coach do? Of course, if it is voluntary and unsupervised, Boise State should stop talking about its so-called 100 percent attendance.

  36. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:30 am

What I like about the summer is that players do have the freedom to train the way they want to train. In addition to Tommy Heffernan’s conditioning program, players can work out with pros or their high schools, etc. And players who attend different schools can work out together.

  37. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:30 am

By the way, Brashton Satele, Aaron Francisco and Kaluka Maiava have been helping out players during unsupervised morning workouts.

  38. CoolEthan July 14, 2011 7:32 am

Nothing like a complimentary swimming pool.

    Instant coolness

    :>

  39. jjay July 14, 2011 7:33 am

Ching field Cooke field, it doesnt matter, give a team captain a key and let him open the fricken gate ,geez.

  40. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:48 am

    jjay:

That would be a good idea. Then I wouldn’t have to look for an X-ray camera. (Do they still advertise those in the back of comic books?)

  41. kawika49 July 14, 2011 7:51 am

    Happy birthday, Allie Tsai!

  43. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:54 am

Ever seen the Cooke Field sign?

It’s on the ground. You won’t notice it until you stub your toe.

And, of course, that’s an argument against being buried.

You pay for a plot. But when all of the plots have been paid for, and there’s no money coming in, well, a few decades after that, a rail system is planned for that area, and then it’s moving day.

And that’s how the grass field became Cooke Field.

  44. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:55 am

I wish we had X-ray glasses now. Then I could avoid that examination that men of a certain age need.

  45. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 7:58 am

If we keep talking about scaling the fences and writing to the powers that be, it seems to me that the players are trespassing by scaling the fences. I can read the national headlines now. 50 players at UH get arrested for trespassing on campus. Is there no control by the coaches. This get blown up by the media. Coaches get fired. Players have to go to court. Scholarships taken away. UH football gets the death penalty by the NCAA. NFL lockout goes into it 2nd year. No football at all for Hawaii fans. Ohhh………. Sorry, I’m getting carried away. Maybe we should just let sleeping dogs lie.

  46. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 8:03 am

Maybe dangerous for the big guys to climb the fence…but more dangerous for the fence. Some of those guys are real big and some of those fences look like they could buckle under repeated hits from an o-linemen. i would not want to be that fence. =p

  47. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 8:04 am

Maybe the security or a staff member should “accidentally” leave a key in the locked gate. An “caring” Warrior could find it and return it the next day after making copies for the captains. If the football players take care of the place after they use it, then there should be no problem with the school. Could find a responsible player or trainer to have a key (while working with security) to open lock up.

  48. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:09 am

No player is going to get caught.

Ever seen a UH campus security guard?

  49. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:11 am

During the spring, there was a little on-campus problem.

Know who served as the peacemaker? Liko Satele.

  50. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 8:13 am

I know the NCAA rules are strict, but could UH “hire” voluntary “trainers” that graduated from UH to have a key to the field and supervise the “unsupervised” workouts. If pay is involved, then with former players “hired” as trainers, the would have free rein of the facilities for maybe $1 pay. I’m sure da Tsaiko could chip in and cover their “trainer” salaries. If they are not football coaches and are trainers with a degree from UH, would it make it legal? Are there limits to the amount of trainers per team?

  51. mauiwarrior July 14, 2011 8:15 am

Mighty nice of Kaluka Maiava to help out UH after not even a sniff in the recruiting game during high school………..he is the brother in law of Kaniela Tuipulotu though, i guess that explains it.

  52. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:15 am

    Walk for Clemens?

  53. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:16 am

    i did not know that.

Lefiti was saying that Faaumu and Tuipulotu are related, too.

  54. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:17 am

Aren’t Maiava, Satele and Francisco all represented by Kenny Zuckerman?

  55. mauiwarrior July 14, 2011 8:17 am

Kalukas older brother (Ilima) is married to Kanielas Sister

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2011 8:18 am

    Good Morning Gangeez!:)

Its gonna be nice to see Edwards in action. Great expectations for him.

  57. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 8:18 am

    #49,

From a convo I had with UH security captain, they were trying to get deputized by the state sheriffs department and be an armed campus police department with arresting powers.

the students opposed an armed police force and instead they just have regular security. UH security guys are the ones in green…the ones you see walking around in the parking structure in grey are just parking attendants with a uniform.

the security force (green) do not even carry pepper spray or self defense weapon as of a few years ago.

as a compromise, HPD was supposed to set up an office/mini sub-station on campus to provide a security force with arresting powers etc. don’t know what happened to that.

  58. huh? July 14, 2011 8:20 am

    ferd,

trust me all it takes is for you write a column to nip the bud before it takes off sprouting out of control

the story line of why UH players are scaling the fence in their own backyard keeps being shoved under a rug, no body seems to do anything about it

this is the second documented incident ,its preposterous, that looks to be a height of 10 feet fencing the player are scaling over

its time that somebody speaks up, so that it shames them into correcting the problem forever

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2011 8:23 am

Hey Mauiwarrior! Nice to see you !

  60. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:24 am

    It’s a very good rule.

There are periods when players are supervised for conditioning, weight-training, etc.

But the NCAA needs to be strict when it comes to workouts involving footballs, otherwise teams would be running mini-camps throughout the year.

  61. Laura July 14, 2011 8:24 am

The solution to the Cooke Field fence problem, give ST the key, he is always there. He is not on UH’s payroll, and also, not a booster.

Not sure if anybody noticed but I took the picture from my car. With the A/C blasting. Hey, if I had to pay twice — TWICE!!! — to fix my A/C, I’m going to take advantage of it.

  67. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 8:32 am

    Mr. Tsai,

Do you know if these travel subsidies can be renegotiated at a later date?

I mean we get in 2012…and lets say 2015 we say we can’t afford $150,000/school but can only pay $75,000/school or wutever.

If we say we will only pay $50,000 and not a dime more…can they kick us out?

  71. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:39 am

The most important reason to keep the gate locked is that after hours, you don’t want just anybody using the field unsupervised.

I remember before JJ’s first spring practice, somebody drove doughnuts on the practice field.

Helps also that the current head coach was not at Manoa during Maiava’s recruiting years yeah?

  73. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 8:40 am

    #70,

Has a team ever been voted OUT of a conference?

With NCAA making it basically impossible to field a new conference, we don’t have to worry about any airport bathroom secret society meetings forming the next mwc.

We keep winning (especially our OOC schedule) and build up our BCS numbers and I doubt they could get what I would imagine would need to be a super majority of votes to kick a team out.

According to MWC Bylaws Article 1.05

“1.05 Expulsion, Suspension, and Probation. By the affirmative vote of at least three-fourths (3/4) of the

members of the Board of Directors, taken not less than fifteen (15) days after written notice to the Member

Institution of the proposed action and the reasons for it and not less than five (5) days after the Member

Institution has had an opportunity to be heard by the Board of Directors, the Conference may expel or

suspend a Member Institution, or place such Member Institution on probation, for any violation of any of the

provisions of the Code. Expulsion means a permanent and complete severance from the Conference in all

sports. Suspension means a temporary severance from the Conference in one (1) or more sports. Probation

means that a Member Institution has been informed by the Conference that it has violated one or more

provisions of the Code and that continuation or recurrence of such violation(s) will be grounds for

suspension or expulsion. During any period of suspension or probation, the Member Institution shall

continue to be represented on the Board of Directors.”

So it is possible but would take 3/4 affirmative vote by member institutions.

Hopefully UNLV/SDSU/Fresno+UH can be a voting bloc to look after one another in terms of major conference voting issues.

If we can form this type of alliance, we can limit the funny business.

    Re: Maiava.

It’s admirable that he’s able to put things in the past.

I also have empathy for that Maui guy who felt he deserved a scholarship offer.

I was a part-timer for the late Advertiser for more than five years. I was married, with a kid (today’s birthday girl). I was passed over four times for a full-time job. There was a photographer who waited more than 10 years for a full-time job.

Only thing you can do is work harder.

“Guy In The Office” became editor and gave me a full-time job.

  86. Kevin July 14, 2011 8:55 am

    IWWTHM,

You know, I was 19, 20 years old… thank God less than a decade ago, but students… college students, should have NO say when it comes to security matters.

Let me rephrase that… students should have NO say in security matters when it handicaps their ability to enforce a sense of SECURITY.

All this crap that has been happening on campus, the break ins, robberies, etc.. would it be more frequent knowing that an armed security force was around???

Personally, I think pepper spray should be available for sale at the UH bookstore and if I REALLY had my way, stunguns would be available for sale too following a mandatory training course and all that stuff.

  87. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 8:56 am

    Drew Loftus?

I think he’s still on the training-camp roster.

  88. Kevin July 14, 2011 8:59 am

    IWWTHM,

    Personally, screw em all.

It was obvious, NO alliance would be formed with other schools, especially when we are involved.

    It really is just us.

Again, why people like you and me were so disgusted with the result of the Hawaii Bowl 2010 is because of that reason. We just got into the MWC, BARELY…. and we needed to start making an impression, proving, if you will, to the brass and the national perception that we deserve to be invited OUT of the dying WAC.

2012 gloves come off and we need to do whatever is necessary to win.

No more cotton candy dreams and lolipop wishes. Bullcrap aside win at all costs (reasonable I guess). Starts with football and ends with football.

Btw I “love” the comment on the MRC Greenwood article by euphrosyne18

We haven’t even played a down of football in the MWC and its already a bad program. Wow…simply wow…lol

  92. huh? July 14, 2011 9:07 am

    President MRC Greenwood,

as a ceo of company thats embarking on a new trail wouldnt you have all your ducks lined up in a row, wouldnt you be thinking ten moves ahead before making the move, instead of signing on to a new venture and then speculating how you are going to raise capital

in todays paper ferd writes that you are basically on a exploration expedition, trying to solicit backers to underwrite the cost of travel subsidies

my question-why didnt you do what you are doing now, seeking backers to underwrite the cost of travel subsidies, last january when you received the MWC invite. to me that would have been the wiser move.

    #93,

I am pretty sure UH/UHAD are ALWAYS in talks with potential revenue generating sources regardless of what needs to be paid for.

The revenue generated from the field naming (if UH gets its cut) couldn’t have been unilaterally decided by UH alone.

The Stadium Authority needs to approve things like that…and following with State Sunshine Laws regarding business of boards/commissions you can’t just snap your fingers and decide on a matter on any given morning.

  102. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 9:20 am

    J. Donovan should and hopefully is, keeping the options of going independent or keeping our options open for another conference. We learned through our history of getting shafted, we have to look out for what is best for UH. As of right now, we should be comfortable with the MWC in football. We will be in the Big West in other sports which is probably a great fit. But in the future, with losing the money or a big portion of the money for PPV football in Hawaii, and paying travel subsidies for the MWC schools, maybe it will be too much for UH to make a profit. Say we start winning in football consistently and a PAC 12 spot opens up, with preparations now, for the future, the options for us may look good. Also, with the travel fees that we will be paying and the lost of PPV revenue, maybe in the future, with all the realignment of conferences, going independent could be an option. I hope we don’t wait until we get shafted again then start to think about it. One scene that could really happen is if the MWC and another conference combine, UH could be left out again or forced to pay travel subsidies to other east coast schools in the new conference. Also, if there are conference shakeups again, maybe other schools will be left out and forced to go independent, thus making it possible for UH to fill its schedule in football. I’m just saying that we shouldn’t sit back and get too comfortable on where we are heading in 2012, and prepare for the stab in the back just in case. I think we are okay in the immediate future, but what about 5 or 10 years from now. Just saying.

    #104,

Simple answer: yes I would be looking for donors.

    Real answer:

UHAD/UH are ALWAYS looking for donors. We can’t just say hey Bruddah T. Boone we need $1.5M to cover subsidies.

The corporate donors are not going to just give away free money whenever we ask…UH/UHAD need to negotiate a deal where they will give us money and they will get something in return. The negotiations might have been going on since January…

I don’t think yesterday a light bulb turned on and Greenwood decided she is going to look for sponsors to pay for this.

Let’s assume that Forcier’s transcripts arrive at UH on friday. At that point, do they need to be processed or verified or can the coaches just look at them and decide if its okay to host Forcier for a visit? What’s involved here? I seem to recall that past issues with transcripts have held up an athlete’s arrival, and that the process for accepting and reviewing the transcripts can tak an overly long time. Might that be the case here?

The B12 no more conference championship…the TV money from that game is far too big for the B12 to be w/o one for too long.

Poaching teams will be here again in the near future. BYU? Boise? No idea.

But honestly, the NCAA moratorium on starting new conferences is the best thing ever.

If anything it keeps our seat safe in the MWC…No more front range schools meeting and getting ready to break away to form a NEW conference.

Off course if the BCS break away to form a semi-pro league…then well mid-majors are all skrewd.

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 9:46 am

    papajoe,

The MWC and CUSA could formulate some scheduling/bowl alliances but couldn’t form a Mega Conference in the near future because of the NCAA rules.

As much as the BCS is seen as the plight football…it may be the thing that would keep the pressure to keep the MWC membership in tact. If we get AQ status it would offer some stability and would keep the MWC from any talks of combining leagues with CUSA. The CUSA numbers for AQ status are quite dismal.

MAC has never had a solid d-interior as 2011 projects as far as talent and experience.

haku had a breakout year with 45 total tackles in 2010 that went relatively unnoticed by most fans. he was ranked in the WAC elite among the top DTs in this category. coaches are working on his technique and the former monarch is an eye-lash and whisper away from being a bigtime player.

zac masch rotated into the system and showed he can make big plays. many, still contend his QB rush-fumble-recovery-and TD against fresno state should have stood. this player is a classic wild card.

vaughn has been frustrated by nagging injuries in his 4-year career at DT and if he can stay healthy, we are looking towards a stellar senior season. meatoga is best described as a human bowling ball with hands.

kaniela is a space-eater and functions on the line as a blue-collar worker who does the ugly job and does it above the bar. his nfl draft posture depends on his final year’s performance as a trench-warrior.

hanohano performed well in rotation last year and showed field awareness and athleticism.

like haku, geordon’s eyes constantly scan the field of play and he motors. he had several impressive pass knockdowns at the line of scrimmage last season. much depends on his knee rehab and those type of injuries can limit a player if not fully recovered. you cant have better parent’s than his mom and dad.

there are several others that will be making their debut, like Siasau Matagiese, portland state transfer from waimea, kauai, but, let’s wait and see….

Jim Donovan has no clout in making any moves unless the Warrior Football team wins regularly and often. We could get screwed at anytime but if we are winning the chances of that happening are reduced. Just as Garret kept repeating last year before the realignment of the WAC and MWC “we have to win, NOW! Just wanted to say it before Garret, to appear clairvoyant like Garret did last year. 🙂

Gigi the only reason that the fumbler gets high profile jobs is because of affirmative action, he does not get them for intelligence as he is brain dead from his big toe to the top of his head

al, rem the secondary nowdayz do more and come in special packages. in mac’s world and aranda’s system a safety/db (jack or jill) is expected to perform a myriad of executions. from nickle to dime to line blitzes to man to cover two. true our secondary is our last line of defence but they dont always play on the furthest line away from the ball.

  181. Garret July 14, 2011 12:26 pm

Dennis Franchione is the one that suggested that Texas State play UH in 2012.

“I’m the guy that brought it up [to Texas State Director of Athletics Dr. Larry Teis],” Franchione said after delivering a keynote at the first Bobcat Club luncheon of the season. “With the postseason being up in the air in 2012, I thought it would be a treat to our players, fans and a good game for us.”

Franchione also openly admits that he’s the one who decided to get Texas State to back out of the game with UH.

Once Franchione decided against the game, which would have begun a three-game, away-home-away series with the Warriors, Teis pulled out of talks with Hawaii AD Jim Donovan.

    http://smdrcatscradle.blogspot.com/2011/07/college-football-franchione-speaks-on.html

  182. Garret July 14, 2011 12:27 pm

Franchione also took a shot at JD when told that JD won’t schedule Texas State anymore…implying that JD will be replaced someday and the new AD will schedule them.

When told of that, Franchione simply responded, “That’s his prerogative. There will be another AD someday.”

  183. Garret July 14, 2011 12:27 pm

By the way, I don’t think that I mentioned that Momo and Mrs. Momo won’t be able to make the practice tailgate because they will be on Maui for family obligations.

  184. Old Diver July 14, 2011 12:39 pm

As I recall Dennis Franchione is the head coach that loves to block our defensive players at the knees. Dirty play in my opinion. For the safety of our players I don’t want to see Franchione at Aloha Stadium again.

  185. warriorsun July 14, 2011 12:39 pm

franchione is fried katsu. the college football world as we know it, has moved on to highlight a new era of coaches. the others* can be traced and located in dusty archives appropriately entitled, “former lore”.

  191. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 12:51 pm

From what I heard, a certain airline wanted to pay a lot of money for the naming rights to the field.

    Everyone was on board.

    Except …

Someone very high up in the state realized that too much of the money was going to the company that brokered the deal.

So that’s why it was placed on hold.

The guy who is very high up said a more equatable deal need to be worked out.

  192. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 12:53 pm

JD said he was busy this month but is more than willing to do a Q & A with readers in August.

By the way, some of the other coaches I approached don’t want to do a Q & A at all, which is why it was gracious of Mack to help us out.

  193. Garret July 14, 2011 12:54 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

UT would play UH if UH went to Austin–Texas went to Aloha Stadium but UH never went to Austin. UH could probably get a $1 mil payday, but JD has already turned those down from other schools so you should stop dreaming about it since it won’t happen.

The Hawaii Exception is useless to Texas since they need the extra bye week. Their early season games are booked for years in advance and their late-season games are booked by ESPN for high-profile telecasts. So, giving up a home game to play a game at Aloha Stadium would cost them $7 mil in revenue, not counting parking/concessions, merchandise sales (they get 100% of all of those things). Plus, they do not have the TV rights to road games so that is millions of dollars to Texas/ESPN.

So, I fail to understand why Texas would play at Aloha Stadium. And I’ll point out that Texas was willing to play a game (a blowout) in Aloha Stadium for free and UH isn’t willing to take $1 mil to play in Austin. Who is ducking who in that scenario?

  194. Garret July 14, 2011 12:56 pm

Texas doesn’t recruit in Hawaii and doesn’t have many alumni in Hawaii, so the game in Hawaii doesn’t benefit them at all. That is why Texas has played a series of games with Houston and Rice, since they have a lot of alumni in Houston (Dallas is covered by the Texas/Oklahoma game).

When looking at a deal, you *have* to look at both sides. I see how UH benefits, but not how Texas does. USC recruits in Hawaii and has a lot of alumni in Hawaii, so those types of schools are the win-win type of situations.

  195. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 1:01 pm

    Garret,

JD has turned down those proposals before deciding to go to the MWC and adding a bunch of expenses and possibly losing our TV money. Things change, circumstances change…if the price is right JD might be willing to take the money and play there.

Again, lets see what he says at the QnA. I’ll take his word over anyone else.

ST, can redshirts play in exhibition, and/or scrimmage games? The reason I ask, if I recall correctly, back in the 60’s and early 70’s, UH use to play exhibition games against the local Arm Forces. The team was made up of 3rd and 4th stringers, plus redshirts, if I am not mistaken. This was done to give them game experience, do you recall anything like that?

After Mortimer left, UH hired Dobelle (who was known to one of the power brokers because his daughter went to Trinity).

At the time, it was a smart move. Dobelle had ties with the Democratic Party, and it was hoped he could used those ties to bring in some money. Dobelle had some interesting ideas, such as wanting to start a football league involving the community colleges. It would have served as a feeder for UH. He also believed that you show respect for people through monetary rewards. (I guess he respected a lot of people.)

Basically, he did the Abercrombie thing: He asked administrators to re-apply for their jobs.

After Yoshida decided to retire, everything was set for Dick Tomey to become athletic director. Tomey even bought a house in Kahala.

But then Dobelle supposedly heard from a head hunter, who recommended Frazier. Next thing you know, Frazier is the new AD.

And that was fine, too. He’s smart, articulate and he had ties to the Olympics, which was supposed to help bring in more money and open the way for UH to explore the Asian market.

But back to Dobelle’s belief in rewarding people with money.

Salary ranges were raised, more was spent. In the end, UH is about $1 million in the red.

And that would have been fine because Frazier was led to believe that you have to spend money to make money.

One thing, though: UH covered the deficit, but as a loan.

And all of us who have credit cards know, debt never shrinks when you borrow.

Also, because Frazier had never been an AD before, he allowed UH’s services — legal counsel, finance folks — to handle many of the duties.

And as we’ve all learned, when you farm out assignments at UH, results aren’t rapid. And then he got behind in scheduling and the accumulated deficit kept growing and then JJ wasn’t made an offer entering his walk year and …

I know Tomey always wanted to come back to Hawaii to live out his golden years. Wonder if Mack likes it here enough to do the same.

I look at all these coaches and their careers take them to so many places. It must be tough on the family having to pick up and move with no true job security.

Wonder where Mack considers “home sweet home”.

  209. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 1:44 pm

The point is, these aren’t bad people with bad intentions.

It’s just the results weren’t good.

Even vonAppen had the right idea. He wanted to install the West Coast offense, he brought in an experienced defensive coordinator, and he fought for improvements for his program.

He wasn’t a bad guy with bad intentions.

But when you keep changing offenses, piss off the wrong people and don’t win, well you’re not a head coach for very long.

-have we ever had a 6’4 physical WR???

I remember the first year of JJ Era we had a kid name Attrice Brooks 6-4 200 from Florida

He was our ‘TO’ and against Navy caugt 2 passes for 71 yds or Avg 35.5 and 1 TD

also against Easter Illinois caught 2 passes for 94 yds Ave 47/rec and 2 TD

He got tossed out of 1 game and never returned. But man he could stretch that field. DAM

I think A Lelie was a walk-on Freshmen that year at tall 6-3 from Radford.

We’ve had 4 /5 others 6-4 Recievers not as notorious as Attrice Brooks.

and who could forget not a WR but at QB Huge Jeffrey Rhode at 6-5 235

    2. Hawaii Warriors: As a big fan of the Warriors, I have an insight (theory) to why they rank so low in recruiting yet do so well winning year in and year out. Answer: The talent on the islands is underrated. It seems the more Hawaiian recruits who stay home to play for the Warriors, the better the team regardless of the individual’s rating. How else can a team rank in the bottom third for recruiting in the country yet stay in the top-20 most years?

    Yep.. das us!

    OFF-SPORTS TOPIC –

    BOOKS, BAGS & MORE

    DONATION DRIVE

    SATURDAY, JULY 16

    KANE`OHE DISTRICT PARK

    9 am – 11 am

    KAKA`AKO MAKAI MARKETPLACE

    10 am – 4 pm

On Saturday, July 16, the Windward Homeless Coalition with help from the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu and Faith Action in Community Equity – FACE – will hold two drives to collect gently-used books, toys, sports equipment & games for kids of all ages including teenagers along with reusable shopping bags to give away at community-based homeless/at-risk service projects here on O`ahu in upcoming months.

The first donation drive will be held from 9 am to 11 am on Saturday, July 16, next to the main parking lot at Kane`ohe District Park on Kea`ahala Road going mauka towards Windward Community College. Look for the white pop-up tent next to driveway.

The second drive will be held the same day from 10 am to 4 pm at the Kaka`ako Makai Marketplace in the large parking lot across from Children’s Discovery Center in the Kaka`ako Waterfront Park. The Marketplace is a new project jointly sponsored by the Hawai`I Community Development Authority which is part of the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, several area legislators, and a couple of local non-profits. KMM focuses on local farmers & small businesses, artists, entertainers & NGOs providing a wide range of services. Walk through the Marketplace until you find the display.

The items donated will passed out at the next WHC service project for homeless, at-risk, low-income, and seniors living in Ko`olauloa and along the North Shore on Tuesday, July 26, from 9 am to 1 pm in the Kahuku Hospital’s back parking lot.

Please let your work colleagues, neighbors, local businesses, sports teams, and faith groups know about the two drives on July 16.

NOTE: My “day” job is with an environmental non-profit which strongly supported state & county legislation over the past several years to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags because so many of them wind up as trash in waterways and along the roads.

For example, this past April during our Earth Day Service Project, in less than three hours volunteers collected more than a thousand bags on the roadways, waterways, and in the bushes surrounding Kawainui Marsh.

I then decided that one small way to reduce the number of plastic bags is to pass out reusable bags at the Windward Homeless Coalition’s own service projects since many of our clients live outdoors.

In all honesty, I’d cringe whenever I had to use plastic bags at Coalition service projects. Giving out free reusable bags makes sense.

I suspect that each person reading this probably has at least a dozen reusable bags stashed away in kitchen and desk drawers and in the back seat of her/his car. Why not share three or four of them?

Our goal is to collect at least 500 reusable bags this first time out. As we collect more, we will share them with other NGOs providing services to folks who need help.

Back to sports sort of: Are there any plans for T-gates or parties for the UW & UNLV games?

Football training questions: How do those really BIGGGGGG guys manage to get up off a bench and move quickly? In training, does anyone have them work on speed or just crushing skills?

I see a lot of chunky-2-fat guys every day and they can barely walk. And I’m not talking about old guys here – young men who can barely cover a dozen feet in 20 seconds.

  242. PowderPuff July 14, 2011 3:15 pm

al – haha! 🙂 Well, I’m not crying – yet. Nah, we had our first board meeting this past week, and it went well. Lots of energy and enthusiasm as the football season gets closer and closer.

  243. Couch potato July 14, 2011 3:20 pm

big difference between big men who train and workout and big men that resemble couch potatoes.

Word on the boulevard (OK, Ferd told me) is the pay wall might go up next month.

  245. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 3:30 pm

    ST, 3:26pm,

Great news for the assistants! At the level we expect to be playing the assistants should be making the same amount as the top 2-3 MWC schools.

  246. gmahoney July 14, 2011 3:35 pm

My good friend, Curveball just checked in. He will meet up with some of the Tsaikos in Vegas, in the meantime, he is promoting Hawaii football in a UN-R town.

  247. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 3:37 pm

    ST,

Has your buddy from San Diego returned any of your calls/text messages yet?

  248. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 3:47 pm

I am just amazed how mean some people on this blog can be.

Fortunately, they are in the minority.

    Please keep it pleasant, folks.

    mahalo.

  249. warriorsun July 14, 2011 3:52 pm

so far, mike edwards remains a man of his word. he stated he would arrive in manoa around the 17th of july. despite having to pay his way, he is keeping his appointment. he also stated he wanted to work hard to regain his form….and, he cites his early arrival to work out with his teammates ahead of camp as a priority. edwards vouches that he will Q as a transfer and there is little to doubt the 2009 grad from glenville.

we all know edwards was a legitimate ohio state high school blue-chip who ran afoul in knoxville. since that setback, edwards has paid his dues: transfered to a MW juco to get himself in order and appears on a positive path to resurrect his college career.

no pun intended, but, turning-this-corner is never easy for a young athlete. moeover, keeping his word is a huge step, mike has taken in the right direction.

best wishes to mike edwards and welcome to the warrior ohana.

    De-Fense!

Good luck and best wishes to the young guy!

  255. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 4:00 pm

I wonder how that pay wall will work.

I have deleted SA from my favorites list, but still have the WB on it.

  261. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 4:10 pm

ST, hubby paid the annual dues for the newspaper earlier this year.

Will I have to pay more for the WB?

  262. Laura July 14, 2011 4:13 pm

Gigi, if you want news just go to your blog roll, you do not need the SA.

  263. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 4:34 pm

If people have to pay for every blog on the SA website that they visit, I imagine it would be very expensive.

  264. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 4:35 pm

    Anyway, I am getting hungry.

    Taco salad tonight for us.

    Yep, from Taco Bell. lol

  265. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 4:39 pm

I think the way it works is if you subscribe you get an access code that allows yo to read full stories on your computer or phone.but only computer can be on the site at a time.

  266. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 4:46 pm

hmm. I can see hubby canceling the paper and us subscribing to the website.

  267. Laura July 14, 2011 4:47 pm

Gigi, you keep eating food like that and your muumuu’s will be to big for you to wear. 🙂

  268. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 4:53 pm

Let’s all be happy and grateful we are still alive.

Looking forward to taco salad tonight and to my trip next week.

    Life is short. Enjoy it.

  269. Laura July 14, 2011 4:59 pm

Gigi, hubby picking up the taco salad? Have a fun trip next week. 1st time swimming with the porpoises for you, enjoy it. You need to start teaching hubby how to use camera so he can take pictures of you playing with porpoises.

  270. madeinhawaii July 14, 2011 5:00 pm

One connection per computer? So one would have to leave/close the WarriorBeat blog to go read a sports article then close that article to come back? Too much of a hassle. I put all thar RAM in my computer and upgraded the motherboard to multitask, not to waste time clicking links and reloading pages I previously opened.

  271. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 5:06 pm

    Don’t kn.ow what ya got until it’s gone . . .

  272. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 5:06 pm

eh, MIH, doesn’t bother me, as I no longer read the SA, though hubby still does.

Today was my 1st day of being bad-news free, and I am a much happier person for it.

Try it sometime, MIH. Better for your heart!

  273. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 5:10 pm

    MIH

You can use one computer at a time to read online. It’s like a real newspaper. Two people can’t read the same page at the same time.

  274. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 5:13 pm

ST, do you know the price yet?

  275. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:17 pm

GIGI keep it up an I going order a T10 for you….actually I have one in my closet. Only 40+ yrs old. But, but, its pure silk, with plenny string for ornamentation. BTW, Am now a Senior Citizen, qulaified for SS today; as I was born on Bastille Day.

  276. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 5:17 pm

  278. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 5:21 pm

    Happy Birthday Kawika49!

Julai bebez make da world a better place. 🙂

So am I hearing correctly? Gonna have to subscribe to the SA in order to access on-line content….including the WB? This might finally silence BIK for good. Can we get a sliding scale if we just want to access the WB? 🙂 uh oh, Do I hear a Tsaiko FB page coming down the pike?

    BIK

  281. Hawaiian July 14, 2011 5:33 pm

    madeinhawaii-#230,

Yes…unfortunately that’s the Attrice Brooks that we know from the 1999 Warriors! Remember him in the Aloha Bowl…kicking the OSU defensive back while the db was on the ground?

  282. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:37 pm

I would tell you what it is, but all you have to do is google it. Remember I’m an 11B4P with the 82nd…is that a hint?

  283. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:40 pm

    #286..was not am.

  284. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:43 pm

Actually a T10 is a Super Muu Muu, a Parachute.

  286. Lava July 14, 2011 5:45 pm

That locked gate at the practice field, is Herman Frazier back in town or what? Is that a risk the program is willing to accept? Let’s get that think nipped!

  287. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 5:46 pm

T10 is a parachute, huh. lol.

  288. d1shima July 14, 2011 5:50 pm

    Happy Birthday kawika49!

Somehow I can envision you leading the mob that stormed The Bastille! 😉

  289. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:53 pm

I could have recommended an 5410-01-323-2454, whica is Green SICPS Tent whic is capable of accomodating a platoon and (burns JP-8 or kerosene directly from a 5-gallon can, approx 1 gallon / hr). This is the most effective tent heater ever introduced through the supply system. It is completely legal, vents all fumes out of the tent, and meets all Army safety regulations… which the “jet heaters” do not. Basically a modernized Pot Belly stove, it will heat an entire Battalion TOC (approx 4 SICPS tents or a 2-section TEMPER tent) to over 60 degrees on a sub-freezing day.

  290. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:58 pm

Gigi all in fun…No tent in the world can contain your heart or grace.

  291. kawika49 July 14, 2011 5:59 pm

d1 I led a mob once…for thankfully a short time. It was called a Platoon.

  292. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 6:00 pm

    Gee, thanks, Kawika. That’s touching.

  293. Garret July 14, 2011 6:04 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

I saw you mentioning Texas as a possible 2012 replacement for Texas State. If you look at UH’s schedule, 12/1/12 is taken but 11/24/12 is open. However, Texas plays Texas A&M on 11/22/12. The late-season game to replace Texas State seems off the table.

JD has made a good point in the past that $1 mil paydays do not include travel expenses, so UH’s higher travel costs (especially to a school not on the west coast) eats significantly into the profit for a payday game. JD also revealed the ticket revenue for UH home games, which came out to over $700k per game (not counting parking revenue, advertising, etc.). So, UH would actually make less money by taking the $1 mil payday game.

  294. Garret July 14, 2011 6:07 pm

Texas State canceling the 2012 game this late *really* hurts UH because most schools already have their schedules filled.

  295. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:10 pm

    #297 How many teams don’t have a 13th game?

  296. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:13 pm

    #299,

All the ones that do not play @ Hawaii.

I wonder who Georgia is talking with to fill in their game that was supposed to be with Louisville. Probably someone from the MAC.

  297. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:18 pm

#300 So,the longer we wait for the others that may have a bad season this year, may want to come here next year?

  298. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:20 pm

#300 A big name could allow us to give 300,000 Guarantee and make a season out of it

  299. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:22 pm

    #301,

I think this late into the season many teams already scheduled their OOC. The conferences with championship games PAC12/B10/CUSA/SEC/MAC are probably loaded already.

I am guessing its going to be a Div1AA school that we will need to hustle.

  300. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:25 pm

#303 So a 6-6 Notre Dame is out of the question?

  301. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:28 pm

If I were in the room, I would hold out till the latter part of the season before looking for an opponent for 2012.

  302. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:30 pm

    and let them bid

  303. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:30 pm

    #302,

Hate to say it but I don’t think we will be able to bring a big name school here. If we want a big name, it will probably require us to travel there. And thats assuming there is room on their schedule.

At this point we can’t ask for much. Only that going forward JD doesn’t schedule more than 1 obscure team a season that with all due respect doesn’t interest me that much. Off course this is just a *wish*…things are much tougher to do nowadays.

If ESPN was interested they could go a long way in helping to get us quality opponents. Maybe in 2012 things will get easier for us.

  304. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:33 pm

#307 If you, have looked at the recent past; there have been many disasters that have happened to the so called names, that needed another game. Think. This is the only leverage that we have. Offering a 13th, game. Please think about it.

  305. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:34 pm

And if I was UH, I would deny ESPN.

  306. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:35 pm

    kawika49,

The biggest issue here is that most teams already locked up their OOC schedule.

Notre Dame already has its season closer with USC on 11/24. Projecting that they are going bowling as the program is on the rise they are not going to schedule us after thanksgiving.

They only have 1 open date 9/29 which is their bye.

  307. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:37 pm

    #310mcount the games.

  308. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:37 pm

    Kawika,

I understand baiting a school with a 13th game but if they already have their schedules set with 12 full season games, we are the 13th game and we are offering them $300,000?

Its different if we are one of the original 12 games, then they can add a 13th Home game. But if they already have 12 we become the 13th.

And why would you deny the help of ESPN?

  309. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:38 pm

Take the top 60. count the games.

  310. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:38 pm

Ok now I am confusing myself. Is what I am saying making sense only to me? lol.

  311. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:39 pm

    #313,

what do you mean count the games?

  312. Slugger July 14, 2011 6:40 pm

    Happy birthday, kawika49! [kawika+1949] 🙂

  313. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:40 pm

Enough…I give up. Just do the math…I go fishing alot…Iwait till I have the biggest tug.

  314. RedZone July 14, 2011 6:40 pm

ST could you put all the important info in the first 2 paragraphs?

  315. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:41 pm

OK i am not going to go through the schedule of the Top 60 teams to figure out who has only 11 games on their schedule.

As an example Michigan State has 4 OCC schedule (Boise, Central Michigan, ND, E. michgan)..THey then play 8 IN conference games. Makes 12. We again would be the 13.

If there is a school who plays 8 in conference games and has only 3 OOC scheduled then yeah it could work. But I don’t know who has that currently.

  316. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:42 pm

#315. If they have a bad year this year; the need to have an incentive to give morale for their last year players next year.

  317. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 6:42 pm

    Happy birthday kawika49.

Happy Bastille day. (If wrong spelling, its because I cannot speak French).Tahiti must be rockin.

  318. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:42 pm

    #317,

Haha ok. I understand what you mean. And yes it could work. We just need to find the team with 1 open slot that ISNT the 13 or someone who wouldn’t mind making $300,000.

  319. RedZone July 14, 2011 6:44 pm

Texas as I remember cancelled game with UH because Mac Brown did not want to play here. That year he was rebuilding the secondary and chickened out so as not to play against a JJ team. If Von Apps was still the coach they probably would have come over. But I don’t see the leghorns doing that as long as Brown is there.

  320. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:45 pm

    Just for clarification.

If a team plays @ Hawaii they get an additional 13th game. If a team has 12 games already scheduled and they want to play Hawaii thats fine that makes 13…That doesn’t mean they get to play a 14th game.

    Am I wrong on this?

  321. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:46 pm

If a team gets to play a 14th game then my logic is totally off.

  322. RedZone July 14, 2011 6:47 pm

If you want to play the big names team you either got to win to the point that everyone wants to be the one to knock you off or you got to got back to losing so that they will see it as a great time to take a vacation.

  323. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:47 pm

#322 yes, hoomanawanui, JD please don’t take the first bite; wait till the 5th game of the season. Take requests, but kanaluas on the decision.

  324. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:49 pm

#326 how many big teams have tanked early in the recent past?

  325. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 6:51 pm

The way I understand it, no 14th game unless you are playing in the kickoff game to open the college season and already playing Hawaii. I don’t think that anyone has done this yet. If you are playing Hawaii and have a 13th game, then your team probably won’t be selected for the Kickoff Classic. I think Boise had something similar with a 13th game while playing Hawaii at the time only 12 games were allowed.

  326. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:51 pm

#326 you are confusing prestige vs. revenue. It is not Strategy it is tactics.

  327. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:54 pm

    #328,

Wait I’m not sure I understand your thoughts. Are you advocating that we play an away game at a big name school? Or that a big name school come here with the $300,000-400,000 payout?

If a team tanks in 2011 but they have their schedule of 12 teams in 2012 they are still going to have 12 games in 2012…You don’t lose games because you did bad the previous season.

  328. papajoe2 July 14, 2011 6:54 pm

If you could play a 14th game, I don’t think you would have any byes.

  329. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:56 pm

    *NCAA RULES REGARDING HAWAII EXEMPTION*

    17.28.2 Alaska/Hawaii, Additional Football Contest

Member institutions located in Alaska and Hawaii shall be permitted to exceed, by one, the maximum number of football contests permitted under Bylaw 17.9.5.1 but otherwise shall conform to the same maximum number of contests and dates of competition permitted other members of the Association.

    17.9.5.2 Annual Exemptions. [FBS/FCS]

The maximum number of football contests shall exclude the following:

    (k) Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico. [FBS/FCS]

Any football games played in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, respectively, either against or under the sponsorship of an active member institution located in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, by a Division I member institution located outside the area in question.

  330. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:57 pm

    papajoe,

according to NCAA rules you can only exceed BY ONE the number of sanctioned games. So 13 games would be the maximum within a given regular season.

  331. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:57 pm

#338 It depends on how much to go there, If they come here this is what they get. We are negotiating; if they need us more they pay more; if not we pay more.

  332. kawika49 July 14, 2011 6:58 pm

#334 how many 6-6 team are going to have a 13 game season?

  333. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 6:59 pm

The CCG and Bowl games don’t count I guess toward a regular season.

  334. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 7:00 pm

    #336,

I really don’t know how else to explain what I am saying. May the best situation work out for Hawaii. Lol.

  335. kawika49 July 14, 2011 7:01 pm

I worked for a Congressman when thata rule was considered.

  336. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 7:01 pm

    #339,

    What rule?

    Am I on candid camera?

  337. kawika49 July 14, 2011 7:03 pm

The sugggestion came up, when the NCAA asked for an exemtion from anti-trust.

  338. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 7:04 pm

Navy vs. Notre Dame is being played in IRELAND @ Aviva Stadium in 2012!

    Pretty cool!

  339. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 7:06 pm

    #341,

    Oh ok, cool.

  340. Da Punchbowl Kid July 14, 2011 7:08 pm

    Braddah BIK –

Please no go, I miss you already!!!

Seriously, word on the street is that the paywall fee will be about the same price as the subscription for the paper. Hopefully thats not a deal breaker. 😉

  341. HEINEKEN July 14, 2011 7:09 pm

Im thinking a team from the big east we need to talk too….Notre Dame does not to play us because there filthy rich already

  342. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:09 pm

Well, I found out why the team practiced so late again today.

Turns out the “band” practicing is really a band camp. They even arrive on buses.

    It’s actually pretty cool.

After that, the players were ready to work out, but a field-hockey group was on the field. Players asked them to move to other side. The field-hockey group was good about that.

  343. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:10 pm

    Heineken:

    What about UConn?

  344. kawika49 July 14, 2011 7:11 pm

This is when JD should think, that this so called crisis is not a (not having a filled in dance list)crisis.

  345. TRT July 14, 2011 7:12 pm

im hoping we hear “Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium”

  346. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2011 7:13 pm

I think UH is going to need to go on the road, or to a neutral site, and win a game against a name-brand team. Only way it’s going to get respect.

But you have to pick it. Don’t want to go to an SEC school, unless it’s Vanderbilt.

I think North Carolina would be a good matchup.

    Or what about Michigan?

  348. kawika49 July 14, 2011 7:14 pm

  356. HEINEKEN July 14, 2011 7:20 pm

But what i am understanding 5/12 pac12 teams only have 2 non conference opponents for 2012:

    Arizona

    Oregon

    California

    Colorado

    Oregon State

the rest of the schools have 3 for the 2012 schedule

Would like to see a CAL vs UH game

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

I suppose I 14th game could be a possibility is beating Hawaii makes the team bowl eligible, eh?

Hawaii needs to go on the road and beat a brand name school and not schedule them again unless they are willing to do a home and away deal.

  366. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 7:30 pm

kawika, congrats on being promoted to sergeant.

  369. HEINEKEN July 14, 2011 7:31 pm

    ST:

On the road at CAL,Arizona,Oregon….They still have 1 more non conference opening….Michigan not an option in 2012 were they have booked 3 nonconference teams in Alabama , Notre Dame and Air Force..North Carolina is a choice because they only have 2 nonconference games against Elon and Louisville..Vanderbilt also open with only 2 games also against Northwestern and Wake Forrest

Keep in mind ST all the teams I mentioned can only schedule 3 nonconference games at the most because due to the fact their conference has a conference choice….Im guessing JD first option is swaying a Big East School to play down here for the 13th game

  370. kawika49 July 14, 2011 7:32 pm

No I was demoted from Staff Sargent.

  371. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 7:32 pm

    football gloves

Gloves. 1. A glove is a fitted covering for a hand having separate sections

for each finger and thumb, without any additional material that connects

any of the fingers and/or thumb, and that completely covers each finger and

thumb. There is no restriction on the color of gloves. [Exception: This rule

is effective for Divisions II and III in 2012.]

    2. Gloves must have a securely attached label

    4th lines in-

There is no restriction on the color of gloves in 2011 in D-1

    http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/FR11.pdf

    page 24

up until now gloves have always been gray(?)

so if you’re allowed to wear any color glove in 2011 would red be the oppurtunistic color to get

you know easy target for QB to see/pin point/distinguish/pick out

do the UH players know about this rule change?

would it be wise to get red gloves now , practice, let the QB break in with targeting wr with red gloves (for example) now before the season

would it be wise to purchase red gloves now before there are a run on them (potential run out of red gloves) as more players and teams learn of this rule

…or is the team already onto this rule change?

  386. kawika49 July 14, 2011 8:12 pm

We went back to a (real) paper subscription late last year because of the length of time it took to read an on-line paper – slow-w-w-w-w downloads, flashing ads & pop-ups – on my ancient computer.

What used to take around 2-1/2 hours now can be done in about 45 minutes.

Could someone please explain what is going to happen here with the on-line edition. Will I have to pay two subscriptions to read the blogs and the breaking news? What will be the charge for those of you who only read the electronic version. How will you be billed?

A few weeks ago, I signed up for a free trial Civil Beat subscription, but they have two policies that made me decide not to go ahead with the regular subscription. First is that they charge $10 in addition to actual costs of the subscription payments unless one uses a credit card. We don’t use credit cards – pay cash/buy money orders for everything including our car payments and rent so the subscription would be very expensive over a year’s time.

The second – initiated just a few weeks ago – is that in order to comment on stories and respond to other comments one has to do so on their Facebook page. I won’t do that – I have never visited anyone or any business’s FB page because of the need to sign in – no lurking allowed.

Anyhow, when will this new Star-Advertiser policy go into effect? Will cash or money orders be accepted if we have to pay for a second subscription?

CHANGE OF SUBJECT: Those of you who believe that the best policy to deal with Abercrombie is to ignore him & his policies you don’t like, let me remind you that there is no recall provision in the State Constitution for the governor. The only way to get rid of him before the second Monday in December, 2014, is to have him shuff off this mortal coil or have him convicted of a felony.

Just to give you a sense of how long that is, three years and five months ago was February, 2008. June Jones and Herman Frazier (sp?) had been gone just about a month. Greg McMackin had been on the job less than a week and Jim Donovan was weeks away from even having his first interview.

In other words, it’s a long way into the future.

As for making a difference in how Abercrombie thinks, you can do it. At 1 pm this past Monday, I was told that one of my key bills – HB 1405 CD1 – was still on the Governor’s veto list. After our quick meet-up set future meetings to start addressing the reasons for the veto for a new bill in the 2012 Legislature, I went back to my office.

Three hours later I received a call from by the bill’s author who reported to me that the bill was not going to vetoed after all because the Governor examined the arguments presented in the testimony & follow-up letters – including mine. He signed the bill Tuesday afternoon and it is now Act 233 – 2011.

Yesterday, I was asked to be part of the working group to implement ACT 233.

My point is that do not give up on what you consider to be important because Neil will listen to arguments that make sense. If you have concerns and want help in getting them heard/read, then join together with others who share your positions and then find someone with advocacy skills to help you get your message(s) out to the right people.

  410. HEINEKEN July 14, 2011 9:27 pm

    WDoc,

Re: credit cards — you should get a Visa and an American Express card. Great cash back rebates!!!

Two weeks ago, Visa sent me a check for $250 (1% for every dollar charged).

And I expect a nice rebate from AmEx next February (AmEx pays 3% rebate for restaurant meals, for example).

  416. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2011 9:34 pm

  424. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 10:01 pm

It’s interesting that JD didn’t protect the Cal school or UNLV rivalries. I may be wrong but I would think its cheaper to fly to San Diego or Las Vegas than it is to Boise, UNM, CSU etc.

I know he had a reason for not choosing to protect 2 rivalries but I can’t remember what it was. He stated them on either Bobby Curran or Animals radio show.

Does anyone remember what the reasons were?

  425. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 14, 2011 10:09 pm

With respect to naming rights, I strongly suggest that the Attorney General’s office be brought in to determine that it is legal to sell naming rights at Aloha Stadium. There are major restrictions/prohibitions in the 1968 lease between the Navy and the State of Hawai`i.

Remember, the University has no more rights in making decisions about what can be done than a vendor selling stuff at the Swap Meet. The University is a tenants – yes, big-time tenants – but the Stadium Authority under the jurisdiction of the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) is the one that sits at the negotiating table.

The University Board of Regents, on the other hand, can enter into agreements with private corporations for naming rights for facilities on any of the campuses.

With respect to Aloha Stadium restrictions – my understanding is that no direct private commercial activity can be done on the property. I know that when the property is transferred to the state sometime in next millenium, Congress must pass a law removing the prohibition. After that happens, then the Legislature has to establish its own list of cans and cannots – including development rights, naming rights, etc.

Gigi – mahalo for your comments. Yes, I am willing to work with folks here to Get Stuff Done.

Re credit cards – not possible to for us to apply for one. Will explain why next time we see each other.

Re earlier question: Any plans for T-gates or viewing parties for the Washington or UNLV games?

The only time I saw them in Under Armour Black Suits was after the USC game

  460. huh? July 14, 2011 10:58 pm

if a person owned the staradvertiser and was thinking of the future, like getting into tv and radio,

would having exclusive na,ming rights to stadium/and field b e a good move

    staradvertiser stadium

The turf will have no need of paintings…Its cut outs were they can cut a piece of turf and put in a new piece of turf….As I saw in the paper a few weeks ago they said we would get the same type of turf as the Louisiana Superdome but with a water removing system under the turf

  463. kawika49 July 14, 2011 11:05 pm

#466 Why would anyone pay for something they don’t have to do? They, the S/A will be the ones who tell you what happened on whats’ his name field. If they did that they would be promoting who?

During the games they all had UA equipment from the shoe , undershirts , Football Visors…..Before and after the game they were anykine…Anf BTW why doesnt UH have a team walk were the fans can greet like how Tennessee and Auburn meet their fans

    #470,

That’s kinda what I was thinking. We need a “walk”. There are lots of fans that would love to see that, including myself! =)

The whole suit thing wasn’t meant to criticize the team…I just was curious if they were in suits or aloha shirts or something.

Unlike other Schools, we have yet to have a tradition to pre and Post game attire. Do we have a UA approved pre game LavaLava?

Do we have a security protocol for pre game greet and meet?

Do we have a Post game uniform protocol?

and same same post game security,

We do not have a protocol other thatn senior walk.

  473. kawika49 July 14, 2011 11:40 pm

Coaches have enough things going on, without the above. Until we have a tradition, non of that has nothing to do with preparing the young men, to do what they need to do.

    *Police/Security Escorting Football Coaches*

Always curious about this and did a search and found this article. It’s more of a status thing.

3/8 Mountain West schools (at time of report) had Police escorting the Head Coach.

It would be cool if UH did something like this. Make all high makamaka. I am sure you could get 2 HPD officers to do this for free. I mean how exciting it would be on the sideline and literally shadow the coach.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2631660

  477. kawika49 July 14, 2011 11:48 pm

Heineken, I see; what you mean. However, you are talking about cultural and acceptable change.

For a Coach, I would think these things would be a distraction, however; If taken in increments would be acceptable.

  478. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 11:48 pm

    #479,

Call me old fashioned but we can’t have “until we have a tradition” unless we actually start one.

It might not make them score an extra TD or sack the opposing QB 1 more time…But hell its about experience. I think the players would enjoy fans giving them high 5’s and cheering them on coming into the stadium or whatever doing their “Warrior Walk”.

  479. kawika49 July 14, 2011 11:52 pm

Iww…Training and innoculation takes time. Disruption to a designed outcome does not produce a desirable result.

  480. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 14, 2011 11:55 pm

    #485,

I would say that what JJ did to our overall program and identity (brand) was hugely disruptive to the tradition and history of our program.

However it worked well…it brought renewed interest and a fresh start for our program.

Change name, add colors, change logo, add entrance music, mascot, yada yada yada.

  481. kawika49 July 14, 2011 11:57 pm

#482 May I remind you of previous experiences with opposing fans we have seen int he past. Security doesn’t mean only the participants on the field, but also those who attended the game. The appearance of the team, may invoke unintended consequences, Think….We need to do this, if you wan’t incrementally.

  482. HEINEKEN July 14, 2011 11:58 pm

IDK bout u guys but Whose Line Is It Anyway is on!!

  483. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2011 12:01 am

    #487,

Again if you read the article, yes there have been some instances where coaches were in somewhat sticky situations…however its more of a status/presentation thing than anything else.

I notice that while most HC have 2 escorts, Saban is regularly escorted by as many as 5 troopers. Bama (Bear) apparently started the tradition so they probably want to stay on top of it. haha.

  484. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:01 am

Ok you all win, but how many games have we won with showing up with Lava Lava’s or shirt and ties?

  488. warriorsun July 15, 2011 12:09 am

there is more to being a good offensive linemen than being big and bench pressing a mini cooper. especially when it comes to pass-blocking technique. the sine qua non in run n shoot protection.

this where our OL must be graded.

although coaches call the key technique in pass-blocking a “punch”, it is anything but a punch. not when you are taught to thrust with two-hands no more than 5* to your front and recoil to stance. there is no pronation of the wrist and hand as in a typical “punch”. no lean. power is in the blocker’s latts. and the blocker must maintain posture, stance and balance with chin down. in a two-hand “punch” it is thrust close together. imagine being handcuffed.

the blow is delivered at a target-zone below the armpit, simular to a strike to the solar plexis with the heels of your hand.

now, anyone trained in close combat, judo or tae kwon do will understand this hand-hrust move….and more importantly, the proper counter move.

so, it is no wonder this misnomer has caused defensive linemen to utilize boxing technique to counter. it’s great for overall reflexes, developing quickness and aerobic training….perhaps a martial arts artist should take up football and transpose the counter hand-foot moves. muhammad ali learned…and swore by it.

  489. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:10 am

In short, we are talking about distractions, nothing to do with the feelings of the athletes, coaches, or what constitutes a football game.

  490. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:14 am

#494 I agree. I believe, that the Sumo’s have the quickest take off, for big men. If some of our sumotori; could provide some of their knowledge to us, it may help. Balance in some other of their arts could be incorporated. However, for big men; I’d go with the sumotori.

  491. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 15, 2011 12:15 am

    #495,

I think green water bottles and white athletic tape are distractions too. They should all be shades of brown.

I wonder who Dick Tomey has been meeting with to learn more about special teams. Was Al Groh’s name whispered before? Hmmm.

I think with him handling ST we have a lot to look forward to. And as Coach Mack stated, he is one of the few coaches that know how to coach kickers. Thats a real plus.

Mr. Toomey has been around for a long time. I think he has learned that his intricate routines (muddle huddle) and others are not the way to go. I believe Mr. toomey this time aroung is going with the strengths of the talent he has.

IWWTHM, I have been watching and dying with every special teams play (Our achilles heel). Amd I assure you; that coach Toomey. would not hold his previous ST adventures at UH as a success.

  507. kawika49 July 15, 2011 12:55 am

A Rugby player can have more success than previously(no wedge on the return) because of their field of vision and tackelers. The rulles have changed on the return, the question is who will adapt. A rugby player can kick on the run. So, ask why, is that important?

  508. kawika49 July 15, 2011 1:01 am

One thing certain we know about what coach tomey will do on special teams…. we dont know. his recent meeting with the iconic frank beamer of virginia tech, college special teams guru, may hold a clue–that this old tiger, aka as dick tomey, is poised to learn “new” tricks. and, for those of you that traditionally plan your whizz-break during special team play–hold, and count to ten. otherwise, you may miss something very special.

  517. warriorsun July 15, 2011 8:05 am

dave reardon’s article this am about mc greenwood’s idiomatic response to mac’s salary, “it is what it is” I found to be more sublime than figurative. after all, when it comes down to a generous housing allowance for our manoa boss, “It is what it is”.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Well…Quaterback Tom Brady appeared to be to identified Number 1 in The very best 100 football players of season2011 at official National football league internet site. I take great delight in his experience greatly. Late round draft choosing, thin boy at the combine, finally supplied an opportunity and staying the hope of NFL prominence and a super model bride. I always show my great pride by dressing in football jersey with a number 12 and his name. There’s a retail outlet from where i selected my excellent jerseys. Jeter’s fans can get mlb jerseys, Jordan’s follower can obtain discount nba jerseys and Crosby’s enthusiasts can order nhl jerseys wholesale there. What’s awesome is they offer youth nfl jerseys and women jerseys. I gave 2 pieces as presents to my nephew. He likes it very much. I purchased my sports team a dozen of cheap nfl jerseys at around 20 dollars, quality is a whole lot better than expectation, big surprise. Really i desire to have my own name and number padded on NFL uniforms, I hope they are able to personalized jerseys shortly.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The United States is really composed of a bunch of tiny countries. It is really cool to see how there are different rules in each state and how each of them keep order. I am surprised that there isn’t more fights between states but I think someday there will be. There is too much pride in each one for horrible things not to happen some day. It might not be a bad idea to just have one law for all states instead of them being able to make their own. Thoughts?
