Early-bird shift

Pick a time slot, any time slot.

Of the three time periods for the offseason conditioning program — 6 a.m., 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. — the most popular is the early shift. Part of the reason for the early workout is it fits better with class schedules; part is because it aligns with spring-practice times, and part is some like to work out on their own a second time in the afternoon.

Workouts involve weight-lifting, core exercises and conditioning drills. Wednesdays, though, are designated for the dreaded “mat” drills. Participants are encouraged to hurl in the trash cans, preferably the ones with plastic linings.

The offseason conditioning program runs up to the start of spring break (March 23-27).

The Warriors have at least one scholarship available. One of the remaining needs is another defensive line. Several prospects are being evaluated.

No 5 star QB transfer to use that last scholarship?

  2. Stephen Tsai February 10, 2015 8:36 am

Not sure if that guy ever called back.

    Re: Roads
Remember when there were road construction/paving in every neighborhood through the summer. It was crazy. And then, Abercrombie lost the Primary and suddenly the roads are free. Coinky dink?

  4. SteveM February 10, 2015 8:51 am

    Good morning everyone!

ST — any word on the Special Teams coach?

  5. hatakeman February 10, 2015 8:54 am

Hoping Warriors get that NT/DT they were unsuccessful in landing on NLI day. Is it because they elected to wait till the dust settled? Just wondering.

  6. gigi-hawaii February 10, 2015 8:55 am

According to a recent poll, the majority of those polled want Aloha Stadium to be renovated rather than replaced.

The location and size of the stadium are ideal, I think. The rail will stop there, too.

Wonder how many fans will actually use the rail to get to the stadium.

  7. seewhy February 10, 2015 8:55 am

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

  8. letsgowarriors February 10, 2015 8:56 am

darn only 1 scholie left after losing 5 guys the day before and on NLI day.

  9. seewhy February 10, 2015 8:56 am

ST: Any word on who the prospects are? JC? Local?

  10. beans February 10, 2015 9:05 am

Abercrombie and neighborhood roads? What’s the connection? Aren’t the neighborhood roads the responsibility of the C&C?
Anybody interested in going to the Nevada game (Reno) this year? Maybe if there is enough interest we can put together a fun rally. Reno is a great venue for the game. Walking distance from most hotels and the hotel rates are cheap. Very different from Vegas. If you haven’t been…………….think about it.

  11. jeezy33 February 10, 2015 9:05 am

    8. Unless scholarships have been filled but UH doesn’t want to release yet until letter is signed. Might be monitoring grades still.

  12. jeezy33 February 10, 2015 9:07 am

    9. If it’s a DT, Im pretty sure its JC route waiting to see if a few guys get AA on time. This team needs immediate impact at DT position versus redshirt and wait.

  13. boolakanaka February 10, 2015 9:13 am

MM to Cleveland?? Hmmn, bruddha Johnny might be going bye-bye for a bit–see:http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000469729/article/cleveland-browns-zeroing-in-on-marcus-mariota

  14. bowwar February 10, 2015 9:14 am

I guess we got all excited for nothing about that supposed 5 star QB. It would be nice to spice up the competition at QB, as we need to have a back-up to Wittek if he is injured during the season…

Yes, it would be great if we could get a NT at this late stage…Hopefully, if we that DC, he can bring a DT recruit with him.

  15. seewhy February 10, 2015 9:14 am

    Thanks jeezy.

  16. gigi-hawaii February 10, 2015 9:16 am

I thought Philadelphia wanted Mariota. Hmmm. The plot thickens…

  17. jeezy33 February 10, 2015 9:38 am

It’s called the “NFL Draft” Gigi. Not “NFL signing day” and sign every player you want.

  18. boolakanaka February 10, 2015 10:12 am

Still, on my wish list, from either a disgruntled transfer or other wise, is big boy who can play the #1 technique. Santa-Santa??

  19. jeezy33 February 10, 2015 10:30 am

    19. If tupai isn’t starting on the o line, he would make a solid DT I think. Technically, we are 2 deep at DT position with KT, Gifford, Rasmussen, and Lavaka. With Penitoto probably in 3rd unit. One more DT would be nice whether it’s a good recruit or moving Tupai. I.Just want best player available with our last few offers regardless of position

  20. boolakanaka February 10, 2015 10:36 am

Jeezy tru dat. My personal preference, is if we can do a regular rotation of sorts. Not strictly 50-50, as I would like to see KT take about 70-75% of the snaps, but if there is assuming (and that is a big item to assume) no real drop-off on the production, it really helps those big boys inside.

I am actually excited about the possibilities, given our diverse depth at LB….

  21. al February 10, 2015 10:42 am

Powell does a good job managing the rotation of dlinemen. The starters seem to get 2/3’s of the reps, we rotated at least 5 guys in the trenches last year.

The best olineman is probably the best guy to cross over to the dlinemen side of the ball. Dejon Allen that is, however, he is more important on offense.

  22. Shoko February 10, 2015 11:16 am

Yes, good idea. There’s has to be a few SMU players that are thinking about transferring with the coaching change. I hope Mason is talking to players that are interested and convincing them that Hawaii is a viable an attractive option.

  23. NorthShoreFan February 10, 2015 11:25 am

Lawrence Laga …. did his eligibility expire? Don’t think he played last year.

  25. BigWave96744 February 10, 2015 11:31 am

I wonder if DT Mike Andrade is healed up and ready the spring

  26. BigWave96744 February 10, 2015 11:34 am

Any available guys from UAB? They can play immediately

  27. Shoko February 10, 2015 11:34 am

I don’t think Lagafuaina was even on the roster.

  28. jm2375 February 10, 2015 11:34 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to Brook Sedore on his AVCA POW award!

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  29. hatakeman February 10, 2015 11:40 am

The only interior D-lineman returning with playing experience are Kennedy Tulimaseali, Haani Tulimaiau, and Penitito Faalologo. There’s much optimism that Ka’aumoana Gifford (2014 defensive team Scout Award) and Kori Rasmussen will emerge from spring and fall practices ready to join the rotation. Maybe that’s why there wasn’t a concerted effort to recruit for this position.

  30. bowwar February 10, 2015 11:40 am

#28: Yes, we should have taken advantage in recruiting any interested UAB football players. They would have been immediately available and experienced. I’m hoping the DC can bring some kids from SMU too…

  31. man eating apple February 10, 2015 11:42 am

What about that House Bill that will create another “Board of Governors”, which will gain administration of athletics funds and authority to hire the athletic director?

Seems you folks here are only focusing on the short term, and letting the program go to waste. Carry on asking about a 4 star recruit.

  32. BigWave96744 February 10, 2015 11:54 am

This 4* DT is leaving LSU and will have 2 to play 2, IF he graduates in August.

34..Seems like a bust on the field. Good in the classroom. Johnson played in seven games the past three seasons.

  35. tom February 10, 2015 1:02 pm

#33 some people don’t like to play the cards they were dealt with.

I wanted 6’4″ receivers who could catch any ball; 6’6″ OL/DL 290+ pounds who were mobile and agile; QBs that could throw accurate bullets at least 80 yards; RB that that could run like Gayle Sayers and kickers who could kick at least 60 yards FG or punts with long hang times.

I can dream, can’t I? But reality and dreams don’t often match up.

  36. Rodney February 10, 2015 1:08 pm

Dick Tomey at USF Asst AD type position

  37. ai-eee-soos February 10, 2015 1:13 pm

USF – San Fran, or South Florida?

    nice gig – either site.

  38. cappie the dog February 10, 2015 1:30 pm

The Hawaii women’s basketball team is a part of Bracketology. They’re the #15 seed going up against #2 Oregon State.

It’s interesting how Destiny King, of late, is taking the same shots as Bernard King, which is a lot of mid-range jump shots from the baseline from 12-15 feet out.

Ashley Karatiana is starting to come out of her season-long slump.

They’re starting to win with style points. Their last victory against Cal Poly was aesthetically pleasing to watch.

If you’re a disgruntled football fan, jump on the Wahine bandwagon. They’re winning.

  39. Shoko February 10, 2015 1:32 pm

“Dick has a tireless passion for intercollegiate athletics and I am confident that his expertise will not only assist our football program, but our entire department,” said Harlan, who grew up with Tomey’s son in a southern California neighborhood and later worked for Tomey at UA.”

ST, so is it true you mentioned there are three local applicants for the AD postion, Rick B ,keith A

  43. st. anthony trojan February 10, 2015 2:57 pm

SHOKO…. is sad not one asked him….what did he ever do to increase attendance at ‘ANY’ event up there…Tsk…Tsk…

  44. bowwar February 10, 2015 3:24 pm

#44: BJ did little to promote the UH Athletics programs…You have to sell the program and NOT try to cut it down at every opportunity.

  45. Shoko February 10, 2015 3:24 pm

Hard to believe the football program is operating in the black. I keep looking at the US Department of Education website showing UH football expenses exceeding revenue generated. There must be additional revenue that’s not being reported when comprising the athletics financial database.

  46. Shoko February 10, 2015 3:28 pm

BJ was good at slimming the budget but it wasn’t going to help the department to break even if there wasn’t additional revenue streams. How much money was the H-Zone supposed to generate for athletics?

  47. Shoko February 10, 2015 3:33 pm

The next athletic director will be faced with the same obstacles. Maybe its too much to ask to get the athletic department to break even. Think the more realistic goal is to stem the bleeding to a minimum.

  48. st. anthony trojan February 10, 2015 3:41 pm

SHOKO… UR FORGETTING..HE HAS…unlimited vision… n pullinh brevenue from the clouds…like potential bowl games…he he he …he sure knows how to do books i guess..maybe Rib Reinwald should have hired him…lol…lol

For he is just a ‘babe in the woods’ when it comes to that…..n a few steps behind Sammy Amalu….NOW HE IS THE ONE WHO KNOWS ALL ABOUT FINANCING N REVENUE…HANDS DOWN….

  49. beans February 10, 2015 4:18 pm

I think that BJ tried and wanted to do good for UH but just wasn’t the right fit. He didn’t have the poise to rally the troops and the dismal football won/loss record didn’t help him either. Too much to overcome. Have to say that a local boy with local ties would probably have done better. Elevating from within can be an advantage. We are more likely to support the local team (guy). I think in this case we killed the
    messenger.

  50. Stephen Tsai February 10, 2015 4:20 pm

    Jjay:
The way it usually goes is everybody will have applied; but after UH is ready to hire somebody, nobody will have applied.

  51. beans February 10, 2015 4:26 pm

Meaning that the applicants will by that time have been discouraged and withdrawn?

  52. tom February 10, 2015 4:38 pm

    #34 – st. anthony trojan
You can click on my name for our facebook page or you can visit our website at nawahine.com. You can also join our booster club. But you can always email me at pomai at nawahine.com

Actually we had a pretty good opening tournament beating St Marys and De Paul, we lost twice to Oklahoma but did play them tough. This is a young team an will improve with time.

  73. hatakeman February 11, 2015 4:12 am

Pomai, I was at the second game against Oklahoma. The Oklahoma pitcher pitched a perfect game against the Wahine. The Sooners won by the mercy -rule for both their wins against the Wahine. I would not call that playing them tough. I also heard Coach Coolen say the team batted .171 for the tournament. I felt this was reflective of how the Wahine played last year.

  74. Shoko February 11, 2015 6:51 am

I know everyone wants BJ gone, me included, but after more thought, I think staying six more months to deal with the NCAA investigation and hopefully put it to rest is prudent. BJ leaving abruptly in the middle of dealing with the investigation and appeals process might be more detrimental of the athletic department, in my opinion.

  75. A-House February 11, 2015 7:44 am

    Shoko – your #75

I have a different take on BJ and the investigation..

Being here will have no impact on what happens as the NCAA will do what it wants to do like a 900 # gorilla – BJ will have limited or no input into refuting any of the allegations to the coaches or the program

NCAA investigation is like a “grand jury” in that the “accused” cannot cross examine any “witness” who may be lying through their teeth just for revenge – happens all the time with police/criminal investigations

  76. Pomai February 11, 2015 8:56 am

Well hatakeman I was at all of the games and we played tough IMHO. We beat the #25 team an I think we did alright against the #4 team in the country. Granted we didn’t win and towards the end we faltered. But this is a very young team and will IMHO get better with more games under their belts. But no matter these kids love the game an play their hearts out, so yeah they played tough!!!!

  77. ai-eee-soos February 11, 2015 9:28 am

    … happy taxes.

  78. Makai February 11, 2015 9:38 am

What happened to the softball team? Use to be one of the bright spots of this athletic program. Maybe we gotta start rolling the Easton’s again? Find a dominant/consistent ace and problems go away.

…Mike, Mike, MIKE,……Guess what Day It IS! hehe

  80. hatakeman February 11, 2015 9:55 am
