Eagle trip

Warrior offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich and offensive line coach Gordy Shaw leave today for a three-day, professional-improvement seminar with the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff.

Since being named UH head coach in 2008, Greg McMackin has helped set up internships for his coaches with NFL teams. Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has worked with the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals. Associate head coach Rich Miano has visited the Bengals, New York Jets and New York Giants. Last year, Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine visited with the UH coaches for two days.

Kudos to UH marketing for promoting the Warriors’ move to the Mountain West in 2012 with an ad featuring Bryant Moniz on the beach. Thing is, Moniz is a senior, so his No. 17 had to be photo-edited to No. 12 in the ad.

This isn’t the first time UH had to call an audible.

One year, the Warriors were going to market four volleyball players. But after the the photo shoot, it was learned that one of the featured players was academically ineligible. The player was photoshopped out of the poster, leaving a gap between two players. For the media guide cover, the missing player was photoshopped out and the remaining three players were edited to appear to be standing next to each other. Here’s the final shot:

vb-photo

The previous year, Colt Brennan was going to be the featured player on the 2007 football media guide. But at deadline, UH did not have a photo of Brennan in a lava-lava. Thus the lava-lava was edited into the picture.

Then for a postseason football guide, it was learned that a school’s high school logo could not be used. With the guides already printed, the media relations department had to ink out the schools’ logos on the lava-lava. Note the dark spots on Dane Uperesa (left) and Tala Esera (right).

And in the continuing discussion of yesterday’s whatever-happened-to discussion, Tom Mui offers proof that airplane seats used to go in both directions. (And, no, UH did not photoshop the picture.)

Ohio gozaimas. The new era for UH basketball is continuing to unfold for the best. Kudos to Arnold and all those involved.

Good morning and welcome to the otherside of the rapture!

  9. wafan May 22, 2011 3:34 am

    Top 10 to boot!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  10. wafan May 22, 2011 3:46 am

Oh my gosh! Some folks are actually planning and thinking ahead to 2012!?!? Maybe the move to the MWC is breathing some life into UH marketing.

  11. Garret May 22, 2011 4:31 am

    wafan,

I liked the message I saw in the article today–buy season tickets now so that you can have good seats when UH enters the MWC in 2012. It does kind of put down the WAC completely when you think about the message, but it is probably a lot easier to sell the MWC than the WAC.

  12. Last Call May 22, 2011 4:45 am

If I told you that today is Bump Day what sporting event am I watching ?

  13. Last Call May 22, 2011 4:46 am

Nice MWC poster but I had to put on my Maui Jims.

  15. Slugger May 22, 2011 6:47 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Happy birthday, Brigitta!

Good for McMackin arranging for his coaches to spend time with pro teams. Professional development is great for them, as well as making the contacts to be able to promote our Warriors.

  16. Slugger May 22, 2011 6:49 am

Hey, wafan! Today might be a good day to go get some rapturous North Shore garlic shrimp with the visitors.

  17. wafan May 22, 2011 7:19 am

    Slugger . . .

Enjoy the shrimp! Still have two months before I can feel the tropical breezes again.

    Tsigh.

  18. wafan May 22, 2011 7:28 am

    Garret . . .

I agree. It just seems that all too often someone is asleep at the UH switch when it comes to marketing themselves.

  19. BG May 22, 2011 7:57 am

Good morning folks! I guess the only earth shaking event yesterday was the 6th inning of the UH-NMSU game.

  20. BG May 22, 2011 8:01 am

Good one Last Call (#15)! For us old folks, we get up in the morning and say, “Wow, great…I’m not dead. And that’s a good thing, up and at’um!”

  21. BG May 22, 2011 8:12 am

Haven’t seen some folks in awhile…hope all is well…A-House family, Sailor Blue and his Captain, Momo and Mrs. Momo..hmmm…this list is getting longer than I expected and I was just getting around to UHFan808, Tokyo22…miss you all!

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid May 22, 2011 8:32 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    Yep, alive is good!

So the Rolo and Shaw sacrifice their off-season for more schoolin’? That’s cool. Are any other coaches going to do the same?

  24. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:32 am

My name is not Harold Camping and I am not predicting the Great Rapture like he did.

But, I have formed a religion ala gigi.

  25. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:34 am

I agree with what wafan said in the previous blog post — how believers who drained their savings accounts must feel on Sunday and how it affects the children.

    So sad.

  26. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:36 am

That publicity photo of Moniz sitting on the beach and gazing at the horizon is really nice! More, more, more!

  27. tommui May 22, 2011 8:40 am

    Great Morning All!

    Welcome Back to the Future!

  30. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:46 am

Any ideas for lunch today? Looked thru the Dining Out guide. Most nice restaurants are open only for dinner. Tsigh.

Thinking of driving to Koko Marina and lunching at the Mad Greek.

  31. d1shima May 22, 2011 8:47 am

Interesting pairing going off to the City of Brotherly Love…

…btw, where is Mouse nowadays? 😉

  32. d1shima May 22, 2011 8:49 am

    Lunch?

Wrap a gift from Dollar Daze; drive around Foster Village looking for party balloons; crash a b-day party.

  33. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:50 am

d1, Mouse is probably spending quality time with his wife on the west coast.

He’ll be back in the fall… at least, Mack thinks so.

  34. d1shima May 22, 2011 8:50 am

Johnny Mac is right…this season is about recruiting the athletes Hawaii needs to compete in the MWC and for the other sports, the BW.

  35. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:52 am

d1, trick is to find a Filipino party. With a large extended family, we won’t be caught. lol

  36. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 8:55 am

anybody watch Dallas demolish the Thunder yesterday? Hubby was so upset.

    He said, “Everybody hates Dallas!”

Me: “Not so! We all love Dirk!”

Ideal match up: Dallas vs. Miami.

  37. d1shima May 22, 2011 9:06 am

Watching ’10 Navy football replays and you realize that their Seniors have no Lockout issues to contend with….

    God Bless them All.

  38. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2011 9:17 am

It is a nice ad, but shouldn’t they have used a player who actually will play in the Mountain West in 2012.

    I’m just sayin’ …

I think UH should have just put the money into recruiting. I’m just sayin’ …

  39. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2011 9:19 am

The lockout will be the death of “Hard Knocks.” Three teams have turned down offers to be documented.

  40. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 9:22 am

    Just sayin’

    lol

Wonder if Moniz braided his own hair for that photo.

And wonder why they changed his number to 12.

maybe it’s supposed to be a generic photo and not one touting a certain QB.

  41. d1shima May 22, 2011 9:23 am

    2012!

  42. d1shima May 22, 2011 9:25 am

  44. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2011 9:27 am

Moniz didn’t change it. UH changed it for the photo because Moniz won’t be here in 2012.

  45. Michigan Warrior May 22, 2011 9:36 am

    Howzit, everyone!

    Happy birthday, Brigitta!

Good to see that our coaches are continuing their professional development, along with making more NFL connections. This can only enhance the recruitability of our boyz, as more and more NFL people will come to know and understand how we really operate, along with knowing that they had a hand in training some of these future prospects via our coaches.

  46. Michigan Warrior May 22, 2011 9:38 am

LOL…. I said basically the same thing that Slugger said in #16 above.

    “Like minds…”

  47. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 9:47 am

Hubby: “I’m just so glad they won’t be showing the baseball games on K-5 anymore. That’s the reason why I never watched. It was so junk. Why didn’t they invest in better equipment?”

We are both looking forward to HDTV games on Oceanic. Yay!

  48. Michigan Warrior May 22, 2011 9:51 am

    Did Lani Moo retire?

  49. Michigan Warrior May 22, 2011 9:52 am

Okay, back outside to take care of these dang hedges. I hate hedges! They look nice when done, but the maintenance kills my back.

Kids are watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang again…

  50. Annoddah Dave May 22, 2011 9:54 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

While Coach Mac is always gushing about how “great” everyone on the coaching staff is, I muse what he thought about what letter grade he would give to Coach Rolo in his first solo year. I know the bowl game was a major disappointment, akin to flunking a final.

  51. SteveM May 22, 2011 9:56 am

    Good morning everyone!

    …probably. 😐

  52. kawika49 May 22, 2011 10:15 am

  53. jm2375 May 22, 2011 10:39 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

BG – Mr and Mrs Sailor Blue are alive and eating very well. 😀

At least UH is being proactive for once.

  54. papajoe2 May 22, 2011 10:47 am

Ok, Yuval Katz played with and against professionals while in Israel and UH got stripped of its volleyball national championship. How can the UH basketball team play against professional teams in the orient? I just don’t want the same thing happen to them. Can somebody explain it? Still enough time to correct it if it is indeed wrong. When the basketball team was put on probation some 20+ years ago, it took a long, long time to recover. Just ask Rainbow Cliff, and innocent victim.

  55. Slugger May 22, 2011 10:55 am

    MW,

    Yup!

Coach Coolen hopes to have enough money to get the two assistant/associate coaches to a national softball conference for professional development, but $25K of the money in their Foundation account will go toward paying for summer school tuition for the girls who are staying. That’s double the number of players who usually are here. Speaks volumes for the team…more girls are staying for the summer & hopefully that translates into a closer knit group & cohesiveness going into next season. GO SOFTBOWS!!!

If you’d like to help Na Wahine, donations are always welcome at

    That’s, “Great minds think alike.”

  57. jm2375 May 22, 2011 10:58 am

Papajoe2 – #55 – wrong player and country. It was Costas Theocharidis and Greece and I’m still salty about that one. 😈

  58. tommui May 22, 2011 11:09 am

ST: Thank you for posting that picture of my wife.

Actually the seat pictured is on a United 747 jet which we took this past March!

  59. wafan May 22, 2011 11:11 am

The rearward facing seats I remember were on the turboprops on the puddle-jumpers between islands.

    Tsaiko-Vegas #3 Update

Rasu Begasu has switched the Friday night (Sept 16) dinner and Karaoke Call to Sushi King for our karaoke-service provider friends, Allen & Chudy. This location is on the same street as Sato-ya, but adjacent to Tropicana Ave rather than Sahara Ave.

John (Rasu Begasu) says: “Good sushi, good Japanese style food and they have Chinese too….”

If this affects your transportation and attendance, please let me know. Current Tsai-ko plans are posted at:

you must be thinking greek marina.

  63. papajoe2 May 22, 2011 11:35 am

Sorry, I got the player and country wrong in volleyball, but does anybody know the answer to the question, “can the basketball team play against professional teams in the orient without being penalized?”

  64. madeinhawaii May 22, 2011 11:38 am

Hmm.. anybody remember those voice boxes at the old McDonald’s in Ala Moana Shopping Center where you could order anything you want? The coffee shop in Woolworth with their awesome fried chicken and strawberry shortcakes? Or those Jukebox bandits on those dining tables that you would feed your coins in and select songs and hope that your selection would play before your had to leave.

  65. tommui May 22, 2011 11:43 am

#64 – I hope and assume that the people at UH have checked out Papajoe2

concern – can be play against the pro teams in Asia without getting penalized.

Of course sometimes you can’t assume that unless you get it cleared in writing with NCAA – with all chapters and verse thrown in.

In essence, I don’t want NCAA bit us in the akole later because some Asian player had a try-out with the NBA or doesn’t eat kim-chee or some small-print exception(s).

    Go Warriors!

    Go Wildcats X 2!

  69. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2011 12:13 pm

OTAs don’t start until May 29

  70. Alnbama May 22, 2011 12:18 pm

PapaJoe, I believe Costas played on a pro team, and I believe the NCAA reinstated the championship to the Warriors.

  71. al May 22, 2011 12:34 pm

papajoe2/tommui…since these are exhibition games and as long as our team is not paid any fees this should not be a problem. if i recall, doesn’t the mvb team participate in a canadian preseason tournament involving pro canadian teamss?

i trust that jd and staff have gotten approvals in hand since they are already collecting sponsorship moola.

Al, yes, it is the Greek Marina, located in Koko Marina. Everything was made fresh — spanakopita, moussaka, souvlaki.

And the baklava was not refrigerated and hard — it was room temperature and fresh tasting.

nice drive going and coming, too.

  75. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 1:46 pm

Greek Marina — cut out the coupon from the Dining Out guide. 50% off 2nd entree.

ST, nice pics and funny commentary!

    Lois looks great, Tom!

Birdland which later became Petland. I remember Jiro Matui’s commercials.

    Magic Mushrooms (White Light)

    Hula hut (Natural High)

    C’est si bon (Kasuals)

    Point After (Nomads)

    La Mancha’s

    Spats

    Cilly’s

  78. al May 22, 2011 2:14 pm

these coupons…instead of saying 50% the second entree…why don’t they just say 25% off entire bill with two entrees.

well first of all, 50% sounds like more. so why do they only discount the entree? the truth is that any restauranteer knows that the profit lies in the beverages, sides, and desserts.

  79. al May 22, 2011 2:16 pm

    white light was more tiki’s.

and the kasuals made the big bucks at the hawaiian hut.

  80. d1shima (Aria'd) May 22, 2011 2:26 pm

No band made money at Magic Mushroom.

  81. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 2:27 pm

Al, the waitress made a mistake. She took 50% off the more expensive entree. $7.74 off!!!

25% off entire bill would have been more than 50% off 2nd entree because of the desserts.

As for beverages, we just drank water.

  82. purp n' gold May 22, 2011 2:27 pm

Yes, but I liked it when they played at those venues. Many good memories!

Remember Playland in the Ala Moana Center? Remember when there was a go cart track there?

Remember when Borthwick Mortuary was on Beretania Street. I believe where Burger King is located?

I think Diamond Bakery was on King Street at one time across the Times by Washington Intermediate School. There was also a photo studio across Cinerama Theater (when it was Pawaa Theater) where the Tesoro is located.

Island Surfboards was where the Haseko Building is on Mililani Street. Surfboards Makaha was where the Korean Restaurant Frog House is on Kalakaua.

Kalakaua Housing was a lot different back then.

  90. al May 22, 2011 2:50 pm

diamond bakery was exactly where you described. we used to be able to buy a bag of assorted broken crackers for 5 cents.

and then there was ohta wafer factory. they made their own kaki mochi back then. i was a regular customer.

  91. al May 22, 2011 2:51 pm

hmmm. methinks you speak of george kodama’s studio?

  92. papajoe2 May 22, 2011 2:52 pm

    Aloha Kakou!

On May 25, 2011 five Warrior Alumni will be inducted into the Everett (WA) Community College Hall of Fame. The players were part of solid core of competitors on the 1967 team prior to their joining the ‘Rainbow Warriors’ under Coach Dave Holmes.

    The honorees include:

    Cassidy, Murray

    Dunston, Bill

    Sjoquist, Doug

    Turner, Bill

    Woodward, Ed.

    And the Warriors march on!!!!

  101. Kekoa May 22, 2011 4:31 pm

Don ~ Sorry I missed seeing those guys play. I was busy dodging bullets in ‘Nam in ’67.

Nevertheless, good to know that this CC finally decided to honor them.

  102. Kekoa May 22, 2011 4:40 pm

K-49 ~ Waikiki Sands! $1.25 for all-you-can-eat! We ate there while people were celebrating Statehood out on the Blvd. My mom cried, because she nevah like Hawaii become one state. She hated annexation and the disrepectful treatment of ‘her’ Queen. We had to leave early because she was so upset.

  103. madeinhawaii May 22, 2011 5:09 pm

What shame that we do not openly celebrate Statehood day. Except for the 50th year, tt always seems like such a quiet day… a somewhat politically incorrect-to-celebrate day …yet, it’s still a State holiday. While I can appreciate the Hawaiian issue, one still has to keep in mind that on June 27, 1959, more than 90% of voters on all major islands voted in favor of statehood. Of the 140,000 or so votes cast, less than 8000 (>6%) rejected the Admission Act of 1959 and there were huge celebrations throughout the islands.

  104. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2011 5:16 pm

I think Hawai’i may be the only state to celebrate statehood with a holiday. Here, as it in most states, it is just another work day.

Just like election day, just another work day with mail-in ballots here. The low voter turnout does not justify the holiday.

#97 MADEINHAWAII. Do you mean the Nuuanu YMCA which would have been on what is now the Pali Highway and Vineyard? It used to be on the site where Long’s Drug and Safeway is located. They had a nice cafeteria right on the left of the YMCA building and was operated (I think) by the Y.

    Thanks GIGI!

  111. madeinhawaii May 22, 2011 5:58 pm

    tommui…

Well.. when I went there it was already across the street on the opposite Mauka/Diamond head corner. Had a lot of club functions there and played music on a few occasions.

    RE #111

Tom — my grandparents house and driveway was directly across that YMCA in those days. My parents used to drop me off for babysitting. My youngest uncle took me to the movies as I mentioned yesterday: Princess Theatre only two block away up Fort Street (Attack of Crab Monsters) and Hawaii Theatre a few blocks further (Tarantula). The Woolworth’s for candied apples…

You’re right, I believe it was keikiland.

How’s about the Chinese _ American Club where the Marco Pol now stands. Home of the Funny Farm.

Then there was Eagles Lodge next to Aloha Motors on Atkinson. Lots of dances held there.

Of course no one can forget Dean’s Gym on Kalakaua and I believe Ena road, next to a market that I cannot remember the name.

Wasn’t there a nightclub on the mauka corner of McCully and Kalakaua?

Remember when people used to sit on those chairs in the Ala Wai to ook mullet?

    Yes, Al, we’re going Deeep!

MIH ~ Just stating a very sad fact that mom held close to her heart. Some people will never understand how the Native Hawaiians felt at that time.

Pops and I posted over 60 years of service to this nation. Mom was very aware and proud of our loyalty to God & country.

Her only problem was the manner in which they treated her Queen. There’s nothing ‘political’ about showing decency and respect to a Monarch. The apology came 100 years too late.

  118. bigislandkurt May 22, 2011 8:05 pm

STEVEM #114 – you sure it wasn’t Kress? I remember they have those fantastic waffle ice-cream sandwiches.

  120. tommui May 22, 2011 8:36 pm

KEKOA – I remember Waikiki Sands. You know that they went out of business because the prices were cheap and so almost all the wrestlers over at the Civic would go there and load up. They were the Tsaikos of that era – or maybe even more so eating-wise.

  121. papajoe2 May 22, 2011 8:48 pm

Ulu Mau Village occupied a spot in Ala Moana Park. Got moved but I don’t know where.

I’m watching the Billboard Awards on tv. Some pretty good music and entertainment, but I’m not sure if they are lip syncing because they change microphones after their performance instead of using the one that is attached to their head for singing. Beyonce is beautiful.

    104. MadeinHawaii In 1959 anyone would surely vote for Statehood; if they were misinformed.

We all have our difference in opinions of what sovereignty and statehood means to each of us. But the fact remains, the Hawaiian Kingdom was stolen and remains illegally occupied.

Ask someone from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan is it possible to break away from a dominant governing body.

    Can.

Ask someone from Belarus or the Ukraine if it’s possible to be independent yet have coordinating powers in the realm of trade, finance, lawmaking, and security with Russia?

    Can.

Ask someone from Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania is it possible to be their own sovereign nation?

    Can.

I fear, like anyone else, what consequences we face if we were to rightfully return the Islands under Hawaiian Kingdom rule. But for me to turn a blind eye and ignore the injustice committed over a century ago, all in the name of self preservation of my current lifestyle, doesn’t make it right.

@#156 ~ A-Joe chimes in with a very true perspective. I appreciate the support in awakening the conscious of apathetic people.

Of course everyone knows that the return of the Monarchy is not possible…right? Instead, an economic shift is taking place that has already caused the State to make amends to what was taken from the Hawaiians. Stay tuned, the Akaka Bill is about to make a ‘political’ impact.

Ok, stepping down from my soapbox and returning to the Tsaiko Sports Network. Goooood morning Warrior fans!

Take time to regroup, refresh, get healthy and then…Go BaseBows!

Last week Thursday Obama said to Israel, “The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and contiguous state.” Wonder if Obama would profess that too for Hawaiians.

Obama also reiterated the United States and its coalition partners intervention into Libya is to stop any “brutal repression” and massacres of civilians by forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, as well as a looming humanitarian crisis. He wants the Libyan people to have the right and freedom to openly and peacefully protest to have a new democratic government. Wonder if Obama will afford that freedom to Hawaiians if they openly and peacefully protest to have their land rightfully returned. In the eyes of the world, it would be hypocritical of America not to.

  170. papajoe2 May 23, 2011 8:21 am

Does Obama really know the history of the overthrow? I know in school, the history was kind of one sided and didn’t really dig deep into the overthrow. Should of had a Hawaiian teach/tell us about it. We just had to remember dates and names to pass our test to get good grades.
