Draft guru is today’s show guest

Our very own Curtis Muryama was today’s guest on the Warrior Beat Show. Here are the answers to the questions he couldn’t get to on the show:

[Comment From Pauoa Boy]
Curtis, which former UH players that didn’t get drafted do you think has the
best chance of being picked up via free agency? What are the chances of Chad
Owens and Ryan Grice-Mullens, making into the NFL seeing that alot of teams
are looking for that next Wes Welker type slot and these two fit the bill.

It’s hard to get back in once your time has passed. When that happens, players might take circuitous route, such as CFL (Jeff Garcia, Doug Flutie, Warren Moon). Grice-Mullins is probably going to CFL. Chad was a guest on the show earlier and he wants to get another shot. He was doing well in the Arena League before blowing out his knee. Each year, 250 or so players get drafted, hundreds of undrafted ones get camp tryouts. That’s tough competition.

I hear the 1st pick bonuses are ridiculously high.
anybody know the signing bonuses for the first 5?

According an Internet report, the top 5 went like this:
1, Jake Long $30M guaranteed; 2, Chris Long, $29M; 3, Matt Ryan, $34M; 4, Darren McFadden, $26M; 5, Glenn Dorsey, $23M

nfl draft….
these days no one wants the first pick. especially this year since
there is no clear cut top dog. why pay 30 mil to one who may not make it past two years?    the detroit lions can even sell the first pick away.  there is a lot of talk of standardizing the first year contracts and bonuses. curtis, what is your take on creating a ceiling limit on rookie contracts?

The rookie salary ceiling was under discussion earlier and the NFL commish questioned the sanity (my word not his) of paying such a big bonus for someone who hasn’t even played an NFL down.

Getting back to what Jack Flash said in #273 (prior post), I agree makes a lot of sense. And he brings up a good point. Madeinhawaii #275 added good insight, too.

In fact, now, I can remember the first question my doctor recently asked was if I was thoroughly stretching after 1 hour walks and I said never. And he laughed and said that was my problem for stiffness in the legs and back problems etc.

So what I did for a lifestyle change, by accident, was daily sitting on the floor cross legged, stretched out etc–reading, watching TV and eating meals, usually up to an 45 mins at a time. This works out in curbing the pain in my back. Prevents me from eating my meals too quickly. And it also gives me a spiritual uplift as I add some brief prayer, too.

Look at the different cultures and people. And seeing how sitting on the floor each day promotes better health for them and how meals are said to be digested easier–I’d agree. Better sleeps, yes.

How the importance of stretching more after practice for an athlete having a significant impact is something we’d never did 30 years ago. In fact, never. And I can, now, see the benefits.

But what I might also suggests while we’re on the subject of stretching is if the players would try (or anybody that wants to alleviate stress or the rigors of a health problem) sitting on the floor daily they’ll see the benefits I see. I think sitting on the floor (just in the sitting position-crossed legged or legs extended out) induces one to becoming naturally lubricated. And stretched.

And the best thing is that you don’t have to set aside time out of the day to do this. Just the everyday things you’d would normally do on the couch or at a dinner table try doing sitting on the floor and doing it–I’m telling you the benefits are great and it induces better health, imo.

    Roysan…

NFL like practice might also mean that the 1st team gets the vast majority of reps and the 2nd and 3d team get much much less. This works if no one gets injured, but backfires on you if your 1st team guy gets dinged and your 2nd team guy folds under pressure. Also practice squads = scout teams AND, to protect their investment, there are limited contact drills, especially for the 1st team players.

Great info/advice on the sitting and stretching. I’ll corroborate what Jack Flash said about latest research on warming up. Most effective seems to be dynamic stretching by gradually warming up the muscle groups you are going to be using. I.E. “do the activity you’re going to be doing” for the warm up. As the muscle warms up, the internal resistance of the muscle decreases and the muscle stretches easier and faster.

If track coaches are forced to choose between stretching before or after a workout, everyone I know would choose AFTER. That’s because the muscles shorten and compact to protect themselves from the running and jumping. Afterwards, it’s good to stretch them out (esp quads) to increase the blood flow through the muscle which encourages quicker recovery/healing.

ALL COMMENTS HEREIN ARE FORWARD LOOKING AND NOT VERIFIABLE. THE WRITER DOES NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE VERACITY OF THE COMMENTS…..BWAAHAHAHAHAA

    COLT WATCH!

    http://tinyurl.com/ctqf5c

“Be kind,” Colt Brennan said on Saturday, after we had spent a few minutes discussing the NFL Draft. “Don’t throw me under the bus.”

So let me say this up front: take all that follows with a grain of salt. We were just two sports fans at a hockey game, discussing the NFL between periods. But I was asking the football players in attendance whether they were excited to watch the draft this weekend. Here’s the short answer: “No.”

“I never watch that stuff,” Brennan said. “I fell asleep last year. I don’t have a lot of respect for the NFL draft, to be honest with you, because of my experience. I think what’s more important is what happens after the draft. That’s what I care about. I just don’t have a lot of respect for the NFL draft process. Obviously something’s not right, because they make a lot of mistakes, year-in and year-out.”

    Wow. Strong words, no?

“I don’t care,” he said. “It’s the truth. I don’t ever have to go through it ever again.”

Very informative interview with Curtis. He shared his perspectives on the up and coming draft. But beyond his picks he shed some info on how he derived at his picks, like talking to NFL scouts and people in the know, reading off the internet, watching and listening to mock draft shows; and mostly personal observation. This is another interviewee that you’d could listen to all day, and not be bored. Because it’s that interesting.

Where others may have been ingesting all the football talk on today’s show, I was taking in on how affable Curtis was. And how personable Leila and ST are. Don’t get me wrong, I followed the football talk, but the show is so pleasing to the sensory perceptions. And this is comforting and entertaining to me as I take in what I see and hear. Maybe it’s the contrasts in appearances I see in Leila and ST that adds to the show. I think, for one is so elegant in appearance, like a swan. With tell tale signs of innocences and demureness. And the other, not meaning to sound mocking, more in the lines of looking like a ugly duckling, especially when seated next to someone so beautiful. Sorry, it’s just the first things that comes to mind when I see them doing the show. Yet they blend together. And I think it affects the show in a positive way. Add to this the exchanges of wittiness between the two and it’s easy see how a fan club can be developing…or eventually more and more viewers to the show.

Looking back at past shows, and they’re indeed are getting better and better, but take a look at how comfortable the guests are and how freely they answer the questions. If the litmus test is how the guest are happy, comfortable and affable while they’re doing the video chats then it reflects on great job that ST and Leila are doing. And the guests, how I see it, are having a great time on the show and are imparting a lot of information that, we, the audience have a yearning for. So thank you for another great show, Leila and ST.

Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark, home of Arizona State baseball since 1974, is one of the nation’s most beautiful collegiate ballparks. Known for its wonderful aesthetic features, the outfield wall is lined with palm trees, and just beyond the right-field fence is the award-winning Karsten Golf Course.
In left field, sparkling Tempe Town Lake and the Tempe construction boom is visible. In the distance, the Superstition Mountains offer a picturesque backdrop. But for every bit of beauty that envelops the facility, there is an equal dose of tradition.

The facility is the home of two national championship teams and 14 NCAA regional tournaments. Arizona State’s all-time record at Packard is 894-257-1, for a winning percentage of .776. Last season, ASU was 26-6 at home and over the last five seasons, ASU has won over 80% of its games at home.

Dimensions of Packard are 338 feet down the lines, 368 feet in the power alleys and 395 to straightaway center. The fence is 10 feet high. Located five feet beyond the center-field wall is the “Green Monster,” a 30-foot-high batting eye. Only 18 players have ever hit a home run over the Monster.

With a capacity of over 4,000, Packard has more than 3,000 permanent seats in the main grandstand. Field-level box seats are also available behind home plate. The remaining seats are located on popular grass berms, which run down the first-base and third-base line. Berm seating offers outstanding views of the game and provides fans with a different way to watch and enjoy the game.

In 1995, the Sports Turf Manager Association awarded groundskeeper Brian Johnson and Packard Stadium Field of the Year honors. In addition, a 2003 coaches survey published in Baseball America ranked ASU’s baseball facilities among the Top 15 in the nation.

Over the years Packard has received numerous upgrades, including a practice infield (1997) and indoor hitting facility (1998). The practice infield was donated by the Arizona Diamondbacks and offers a full size infield that is used for various defensive, bunting and baserunning drills. The 6,000 square foot hitting facility was provided by a private donation and includes 5 batting cages and a separate area for speed and movement exercises. A new Daktronics scoreboard was installed in left-center field in 1999 and is fully equipped for graphics, animation and messages on its matrix board.

Just before the 2003 season, ASU installed a brand new playing surface featuring major league quality drainage and irrigation systems. The playing surface consists of tiff green grass in the infield and Bermuda grass in the outfield. The dirt portion of the infield is crushed red brick, which can be found at many major league stadiums. The playing surface is annually referred to as one of the nation’s best.

A new players’ facility, opened in August 2004, includes a clubhouse and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility. The clubhouse also includes a video room, study area and meeting room.
Head Coach Pat Murphy also had an office constructed that is located on the terrace level of the new clubhouse.

Packard’s existence was made possible through a gift to Arizona State University from Guthrie and Peter Packard. Both are alumni of ASU, and the stadium is a tribute to their late father, William Guthrie Packard, a prominent member of the publishing industry for many years. Mr. Packard served the Shephard Company for 51 years, rising from sales representative to President and Chairman of the Board. He was also active in various community and church affairs in Colorado and Arizona.

Sundevils just swept Stanford and hold a 3 1/2 game lead in PAC 10 standings.
watchout for Jason Kipnis, .410, 10 HRs, 50 RBIs, you’ll be seeing the Kentucky transfer in the majors.

  105. warriorfanny2 April 21, 2009 2:46 pm

It’s been a down year for the Pac-10 — the conference is typically in contention to send five teams to the field of 64, but this year they’ll be hard-pressed to match that number. And unless one of the middle-of-the-pack Pac-10 teams gets hot down the stretch, they could get only two teams.
    ASU, Oregon State….and maybe USC.

  176. Committed Road Warrior April 21, 2009 5:41 pm

    koakane:

    Did that fifteen minutes ago.

Would rather have the ‘Bows focus on the WAC. Getting a win from ASU would have been nice, but its only a single game. Stats buffs keeping track of UH’s RPI probably won’t see much of a change from this single game. It’s the four game series against NMSU that’s more important.

  177. Committed Road Warrior April 21, 2009 5:49 pm

    d1 #175:

Unless the baseball RPI formula has changed, margin of victory (loss) isn’t considered.

KK talking bubbles again….who’s zesus??? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  179. Committed Road Warrior April 21, 2009 5:55 pm

    College Baseball RPI Formula:

    RPI = (.25 × WP) + (.50 × OWP) + (.25 × OOWP) + Bonus – Penalty

    WP—winning percentage
    OWP—opponent’s winning percentage (average)
    OOWP—opponents opponent’s winning percentage (average)

Bonus and Penalty formulas are like Col. Sanders’ secret recipe. Who knows how they are calculated?

NMS has 4 hitters in the top WAC-10 in BA, hits, runs, HRs and RBIs.
We are going to need a strong effort from Garcia, Montplaisir, VanDoornum, Chavalier, Johnson and Morford.
Also, CT has been using Kevin Fujii in the second game of DHs to relieve Hernandez.
Against SAC, Landon did not DH.
He has 3rd best BA, so I hope CT was just giving others a look….we need all our hitters in the NMS series.

  185. koakane™ April 21, 2009 6:19 pm

just turned on radio to find out what the score was and crap worst than before.

dinna so outta here, what shinto tei bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  186. warriorfanny2 April 21, 2009 6:24 pm

Our ticket to the dance is winning the WAC tournament.
Finishing #1 in the regular season is important for seeding.

While this game against ASU will go against Hawaii in the rankings and for regional-host consideration, the WAC prize is priority. Still, our effort today does underscore our hitting vulnerabilities when our pitching goes south.
Bows maybe a WAC conference contender but not made of regional-busting stuff.

  187. warriorfanny2 April 21, 2009 6:38 pm

    Positive stuff:
bowz continue to be aggressive at the plate as evidenced by the low pitch count by ASU throwers–we are continuing to attack the ball. IMO, that is the formula to get it kickin.

Trap had an opportunity to work his pitchers against a top team.
He is a good pitching coach w great instincts and Im sure todays game will help his evaluation for the NMS series.

The drubbin humbles the bows, gives CT an opportunity to get their attention and refocus on basics.

Lets play bigball in Las Cruces—Jubo be there!

  188. Garret April 21, 2009 7:35 pm

Pretty cool that UH is one of 4 schools mentioned that have had more NFL draft picks over the past 4 years than many BCS conference schools. This fits in with the info on the WB show today.

Non-BCS schools like BYU (20), Utah (19), Fresno State (17) and Hawaii (17) have churned out more NFL picks since 2000 then many of its major conference counterparts.

  189. Garret April 21, 2009 7:36 pm

That should be 9 years, not 4.

  190. Patios gold coast April 21, 2009 7:38 pm

    Belated happy birthday.

  191. Garret April 21, 2009 7:40 pm

Silverado High School (UH is very familiar with this school!) has a good LB recruit, but unfortunately he’s leaning to BYU now. He hasn’t been hearing from UH at all…but I thought I’d post this because UH might take a look at him in the near future.

BYU, as well as other MWC and Pac-10 schools, are still courting one of the top linebackers out of Las Vegas, Kyle Anderson.

BYU, UNLV, Utah and Oregon State are the four universities that have been actively recruiting Anderson. However, three new universities have tossed their recruiting hats in the ring.

“Since the last time we’ve talked, there have been quite a few schools that I’ve been hearing from,” Anderson said. “I’ve now received handwritten letters from both the University of Nevada and Wyoming, and [Arizona State] has also become interested in me, so those are the three new schools that are also interested and have been looking at me.”

  192. Jason April 21, 2009 7:40 pm

Garret: Not sure if you posted this link:

    http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college/2009/04/list-of-iaa-eaters-grows-rutgers-adds-texas-southern-to-2009-schedule.html

The addition of Texas Southern has Rutgers joining fellow Big East member USF, ACC schools Duke, North Carolina and NC State, the SEC’s Ole Miss and Kansas State of the Big 12 as BCS schools playing two games against lower-level competition, continuing a trend we’ve previously discussed.

I didn’t realize that Lelie had the highest receiver rating in college football this decade!

Bryant finished the 2008 season with the highest receiving rating (.1924) in Division I FBS college football, besting other top receivers: Kansas’s Dezmon Briscoe (.1887), BYU’s Austin Collie (.1882), and Rice’s Jarett Dillard (.1880). Bryant’s 2008 performance ranks as the strongest wide receiver performance in the past 5 seasons of Division I FBS college football. Since 2000, only Hawaii’s Ashley Lelie (.1948) and Pittsburgh’s Larry Fitzgerald (.1942) have finished seasons with higher receiving ratings.

    Jason,

I saw that article but wasn’t sure if I was going to post it or not. I think that it is sad that so many schools are playing 2 D-IAA teams this season…but they just want the extra home games to make extra $$$. Given current economic conditions, I’m not surprised this is happening.

  195. Jason April 21, 2009 7:54 pm

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this earlier; a Vitaminwater ad jogged my memory. There’s nothing wrong with athletes drinking Vitaminwater, as long as they don’t drink certain ones a lot:

Cool note about David Veikune in this article on relatives of players who will be drafted by the NFL this weekend.

DAVID VEIKUNE – Hawaii…Cousin, Tony Fulilangi, was the fourth-ranked light heavyweight boxer in the world at one point. After fighting George Foreman, he went on to train Paea Wolfaram, who won a silver medal for the Tongan Islands at the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta…Cousin, Mapa Malupo, was a running back at College of the Canyons in California.

The Dolphins know they need help at receiver but insisted to NFL types their group is better than some believe. ”We’re underestimated,” Davone Bess said. ”We hear Mel Kiper and Todd McShay saying the Dolphins don’t have receivers. It’s a smack in the face. We can’t buy into it.”

Minnesota Elementary school is now teaching skateboarding as part of PE.

Battling a national childhood obesity crisis, educators and curriculum creators alike saw a need to structure physical education around activities kids can take home with them and do after school in lieu of spending hours texting and surfing Web sites like Facebook.

Kids are more likely to stay active if they’re introduced to a sport or activity they like, said Eric Klassen, who co-founded Skate Pass, the Colorado-based firm that helped start the skating curriculum program.

“If you drive down the street and you see kids just screwing around with their friends, being active, (skateboards and bikes) are the two things you normally see,” he said.

It is amazing to me that more people are making a living from their blogs than are working as firefighters or computer programmers!

In America today, there are almost as many people making their living as bloggers as there are lawyers. Already more Americans are making their primary income from posting their opinions than Americans working as computer programmers or firefighters.

The best studies we can find say we are a nation of over 20 million bloggers, with 1.7 million profiting from the work, and 452,000 of those using blogging as their primary source of income. That’s almost 2 million Americans getting paid by the word, the post, or the click — whether on their site or someone else’s. And that’s nearly half a million of whom it can be said, as Bob Dylan did of Hurricane Carter: “It’s my work he’d say, I do it for pay.”

  200. Garret April 21, 2009 8:04 pm

I think that ST is underpaid!

It takes about 100,000 unique visitors a month to generate an income of $75,000 a year. Bloggers can get $75 to $200 for a good post, and some even serve as “spokesbloggers” — paid by advertisers to blog about products. As a job with zero commuting, blogging could be one of the most environmentally friendly jobs around — but it can also be quite profitable. For sites at the top, the returns can be substantial. At some point the value of the Huffington Post will no doubt pass the value of the Washington Post.

Pros who work for companies are typically paid $45,000 to $90,000 a year for their blogging. One percent make over $200,000. And they report long hours — 50 to 60 hours a week.

Article about the proposal the MWC presented today to the BCS Commisioners.

The Mountain West wants to replace the polls and computers used in the BCS standings formula with a 12-person committee. This committee would select the top 25 teams, and conduct an eight-team playoff using the four major bowls.

The Mountain West plan would also revamp the “automatic qualifier” rule that guarantees six conference champions a berth in a BCS bowl.

The Mountain West proposal, in fact, has less than a longshot’s chance to succeed.

Thompson even conceded his proposal was more of a conversation starter.

“I don’t necessarily disagree that it’s an uphill challenge,” Thompson said. “Our position is ‘Let’s start talking.’

“Change isn’t going to come quickly.”

Change, in fact, may still take years.

The BCS recently agreed to a four-year, $500-million contract with ESPN to televise BCS bowl games starting in January 2011. ESPN negotiated with the understanding the present format would not change, and officials have said publicly they would not try to force a playoff.

  211. Garret April 21, 2009 9:21 pm

Note that ESPN’s deal with the BCS was with the understanding that the BCS format would not change through their contract…which doesn’t end until the 2014 bowls! About hopes for using the antitrust threat against the BCS, even the MWC commissioner admitted that wouldn’t work in court.

The Mountain West, technically, is a member of the BCS and Thompson said he was trying to promote change within the system.

“I don’t think there’s a probable antitrust component with this,” he said.

Swofford maintains in-house attorneys have assured commissioners that the BCS is not a monopoly.

“If we thought otherwise, we’d be adjusting it accordingly,” Swofford said.

I was going to post the link to the USA Today article that mentioned Jake Ingram, but it just showed up on the Advertiser website so I can provide a link to that instead.

“Jacob Ingram out of Hawaii is a very good long snapper, so he’s probably going to get drafted in the fifth, sixth round,” Kiper says.

Ingram, 6-3, 235 pounds, is taking the wait-and-see approach. But about a third of the snappers in the NFL last season were drafted in rounds four through seven. He’s rated the top snapper by NFLDraftScout.com

Steve, back in the day when one took over a certain event, it was called “Beaugarding.” When someone does it today, they are called a blog hog. The term fits certain people more than others here.

When it happens, some figure it’s time to go walk their dog, or water the house plants. However, they do serve a purpose, and we are lucky to have them I suppose. Er..umm, just not all the time! It can cause people to lose interest and wander away for 1.5 hours.

I dig Obama’s comments with Ken Miumatalolo at the White House:

“Coach Ken, thank you. We were just talking — he’s another local boy from Hawai’i. He’s four years younger than me, but apparently we’ve got some mutual friends.

“I want to congratulate Coach Ken, as I said, from my original home state, also the first Samoan American head coach in the history of Division I-A, just the third Navy coach since World War II to have a winning record in his first season.

“Your starting quarterback is also Hawaiian —where is he? Kaipo (Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada) — where is he? … I hear Kaipo is a pretty easygoing guy. He doesn’t get rattled easily, performs under pressure. That’s the Hawaiian spirit. That’s how we roll.”

KHNL article about UH’s new secondary.

“It’s better to be consistently good than occasionally great, so that’s what we’re tying to do, get consistency down so we don’t give up all those big plays that we gave up last year, and we’re trying to bond together as a unit as a secondary and hopefully get some good play,” said Spencer Smith.

“We’re young, we understand we’re young so we gotta stay around the coaches as much as possible, but everybody here is willing to be coached, there’s no sore thumbs, no guys who come out and say well I got hurt I can’t go today, everybody gives 100 percent to the team, and if we just continue to do that, sky is the limit for this unit,” said Jeramy Bryant.

Had the honor and pleasure of attending the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl game and the debut of Ken Niumatalolo as the Head Coach of the Naval Academy Football Team. Went with a couple local guys and we all had a sense of excitement and pride in what was happening. And the fact he became the HC for a US Service Academy during a time of war and the bowl game taking place in San Diego…..super special, super chicken skin. From the kinda low Navy jet flyover (small kine shi shi da bibidis) to their inspiring fight song to the great game itself, it was an event that I will pridefully remember and tell of for the rest of my life.
